IELTS animal testing essay: Some people think that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefits of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong.

Over centuries humans have experimented with many different chemicals, products, and processes, with the final aim of bettering our conditions. Testing products on animals most likely dates back centuries, however, in modern society it is a controversial point. Below is an outline of circumstances when it could be considered acceptable and unacceptable.

Firstly, it is clear that major advances in fighting disease, viruses and illnesses would not have been made without testing products on animals. This is because it is inhumane to test the products on healthy human beings, likewise using computer modelling to predict reactions is only a recent possibility and still not as reliable as testing on animals. Therefore without experiments on animals, breakthroughs in medicine would have been impossible, and most would agree the price paid has been worth it.

Conversely, it could be argued that medical research carried out for mere cosmetic ends is undoubtedly not worth the lives of innocent animals. This is largely for two reasons, firstly a large body of research is said to have been built up previously from past experiments, and secondly there are alternatives such as dermatological testing or using natural ingredients.

For example, retail chains such as Lush and The Body Shop have both made fortunes by positioning themselves as natural solutions against animal testing. Therefore due to the end rationale for testing on animals, and the alternatives available, it is clear it is completely unjustifiable in this situation.

To conclude animal welfare can be side-stepped when the situation is threatening humans and computer alternatives are simply too premature. Nevertheless, when the research has rather fickle motives and viable alternatives do exist, in these cases the loss of animal's lives in inexcusable.

It is true that wildlife has suffered as a result of the economic success that people have experienced recently. As a result, people’s interest in the conservation of wild animals has always grown. Some believe, however, that the time and money devoted to this noble endeavour are almost excessive and that they need to be used instead on initiatives that directly assist the human race. Although there is some merit to this way of thinking, I believe that more work should be done by humans to safeguard wild animals.

Firstly, wildlife plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance, pollinating crops, and preventing the spread of diseases. Ignoring their protection may lead to unforeseen consequences, affecting human well-being in the long run. Secondly, tourism, which often revolves around wildlife, contributes significantly to economies. By investing in the protection of wild animals and their habitats, countries can attract tourists.

However, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of finding a balance. Some conservation efforts might seem extravagant, and redirecting a portion of those funds towards immediate human necessities could be beneficial. Governments and organizations should prioritize projects that address both wildlife protection and human welfare, ensuring a harmonious coexistence.

In conclusion, while there may be instances where funds for wildlife protection seem excessive, a comprehensive approach is necessary. Striking a balance between preserving our natural heritage and meeting human needs is key to building a sustainable and equitable future for both species. (241 words)

Band 8 Sample Answer for Writing Task 2 Question – Protection of Endangered Species/ Wild Animals

While there is so much human suffering, the spending of resources to protect wild animals presents an ethical dilemma. However, I disagree with the opinion given, because it is possible to allocate resources intelligently to benefit both the animal and the human population.

The protection of wild animals must be high on the agenda of every individual citizen and government. Firstly, the red list of endangered species is increasing every year. If wildlife extinction continues, then humans may face an ecological crisis which impacts on their own survival. For example, if the practice of whaling is not halted, the ecosystems of our oceans will be altered forever, and this may affect fish stocks on which so many communities depend for a living. Secondly, protecting wild animals means protecting the habitats in which they live, such as rainforests and wetlands. If habitat destruction is permitted, climate change will affect our capacity to produce food to sustain the growing human population.

The formation of wildlife reserves not only protects wildlife, it also brings benefits to communities. In order to generate revenue for their management and to eliminate poaching, responsible ecotourism to observe animals in the wild can be developed further. This has been shown to create jobs in such places as the Serengeti National Park in Africa. The result is increased prosperity when local communities, especially in developing countries, are involved in the running of wildlife safaris, which attract visitors to the reserves. Thus, the application of intelligent strategies brings benefits for humans and wildlife.

In conclusion, I disagree with the view expressed in the statement. It is in the interest of everyone to protect wildlife, and creative solutions have shown that this need not be a drain on scarce resources. (289 words)

To begin with, the dynamics which have contributed to the ailing health of the wildlife are majorly relevant to human actions. The usages of certain environmental deterrents like chlorofluorocarbons, DDT, and other hazardous pollutants have been major culprits in this regard. That being said, a lot of damage is already done, which to a larger extent is irrecuperable. The need of the hour, however, is to preserve and fortify the wildlife. For instance, the species of Asiatic Lion, which are only found in parts of India now, were deemed ‘Endangered’ mainly because of habitat loss owing to climate change, grazing, growing agricultural demands, etc. Therefore, it is of prime essence that the government and authorities should indeed focus on the judicial methods to safeguard the wildlife.

The government should invest in the rehabilitation of the natural environment, as in the purview of substantial development it is very crucial that nature and its resources are intact and unblemished. It could appear as an arduous deal to spend money and capital on wildlife. Conversely, it could promote and foster economical status as India largely attracts the international footfall for its flora and fauna, and hence it rather would be a prudential decision to strengthen the tourism baseline and capital bolstering.

Conclusively, it is in the best of human interest that the government spends and invests in the fortification of conservation of wildlife and is not at all an extravagance. (301 words)

Ielts task 2 essay.

A growing number of people feel that animals should not be exploited by people and that they should have the same rights as humans, while others argue that humans must employ animals to satisfy their various needs, including uses for food and research. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer

Many people believe that animals are supposed to be treated in the same way as humans, and should have comparable rights. While other people believe that it is vital to utilize them as we want for purposes such as food, flesh, and research work. In this essay, I will elaborate both the viewpoints along with my opinion.

As to the abuse of creatures, many understand that it is considered for a few reasons. Firstly, they believe that humans are the most essential creatures on earth, and their survival should be ensured on a priority. If it requires sacrificing other creatures for discovering solutions for infections or for food, humans have the right to do so. Moreover, it is accepted by some that animals don’t feel torment, pain, or loss as humans do, hence the killing of animals for human needs is justified and ethically worthy.

There are many people who have studied animal behaviors closely and have an opposing idea. As per many such people, animals should have their own rights, and must not be abused or sacrificed for human requirements. It has been proven through numerous laboratory experiments that animals are capable of feelings and emotions, and feel pain as much as humans do. In addition, a considerable measure of creature research is accomplished for beauty care products and not to discover remedies for ailments which is unnecessary. Finally, it has also been proven that humans can get all the nutrients and vitamins that they need from green vegetables and fruit. Therefore, again, having to kill animals for food is not an adequate argument.

In my opinion, the arguments against animal rights do not stand up to scrutiny. To sum up, albeit a few people contend murdering animals for research and sustenance is moral, I would say that there is adequate proof to show the contrary, and steps must be taken to improve the privileges of creatures.

There is a wide range of topics used in the IELTS writing test and many of them overlap. Today, we are going to look at a question that falls between the topics of animals and ethics and science. It will require you to write an animal testing essay .

In this article, I will analyse the question for you, give you some pointers on useful language, and then show you my own sample band 9 answer.

The Task: Animal Testing

Here is a question that appeared in the IELTS exam several years ago:

Some people claim that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefit of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

(Note that questions can be re-used or re-written, so it is possible that you might see this recycled in the future.)

This is a “discuss both views” question , so your task is ultimately to do three things:

• Explain why some people think animal testing is acceptable
• Explain why some people think animal testing is unacceptable
• Give your opinion

Even if you feel really strongly that it is wrong, for example, you still need to explain the opposing view. You don’t need to give a balanced answer , but you do need to acknowledge both sides of the debate. This is important for Task Response.

Planning your Answer

I almost always write a four-paragraph essay for my sample band 9 answers but today I’m going to write five. It could easily have been four paragraphs but I wanted to separate my anti-animal testing arguments into two separate paragraphs for better organisation. (You can read about 4- vs 5-paragraph essay structures here .)

My essay is going to look like this:

When it comes to a task 2 introduction , please make sure that you have a clear outline sentence and also that your opinion (if one is required) is stated clearly.

Body paragraph 1 will act as a sort of concession paragraph , so it will be imperative that I make it clear that this is not my opinion but rather what some other people think. If I fail to do this, then the reader might be confused.

The ideas in body paragraphs 2 and 3 will be separated but could also have been condensed into two paragraphs. However, I felt that for this topic it was a little more effective to split them. It also made my argument slightly more persuasive.

For the conclusion , I will be careful not to repeat myself too much and instead just summarise and reaffirm my stance.

Language for an Animal Testing Essay

The topic of animal testing is obviously controversial and so people will have different ideas. What you say will be largely based upon your own opinions. However, keep in mind that it covers those three topics I mentioned:

You don’t really need to know a lot about each, but it definitely would have some benefit if you knew a little about these areas and had some good vocabulary to use. I wrote about the IELTS topic of animals here , and there is plenty of good vocabulary that you can borrow. You can also search “animals” in the search bar at the top of the page.

I also recommend that you read and listen on issues that are related to IELTS topics like this. I particularly recommend the SYSK podcast episode on animal testing, which I think it is informative and accessible. You may learn some good language and get some inspiration for what you could write in your own animal testing essay. Other sources include this argument against animal testing by PETA and this one in favour of it by Stanford.

Language for Contentious Issues

In my essay, I will use the following phrases, which could be modified and applied to other contentious issues. I will put the specific language in brackets, so that you could swap it out when discussing other topics:

• [animal testing] has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of [science]
• The people who believe that [animal testing] is necessary tend to say…
• this is wrong for several reasons
• [animal testing] is not as helpful in [developing medicines] as people think
• There are many other reasons why [experimenting with animals] is wrong
• it is grossly unethical to [subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences]
• people may argue that there are benefits that come from [experimenting on animals], but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this

• Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans
• if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem

It is also important to avoid repetition and that means finding ways to say “animal testing” without repeating the say words over and over. You could say:

• testing on animals
• experimenting on animals
• subjecting animals to medical experiments
• using animals in experiments

Again, it would be helpful to read articles and listen to podcasts on this topic in order to improve your vocabulary.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Over the past few decades, animal testing has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of science. This essay will look at both sides of the debate, before concluding that animal testing should be banned.

The people who believe that animal testing is necessary tend to say that there are serious benefits to humanity, such as testing medicines before using them on human beings. They believe that this will help to figure out the cures to many serious illnesses, which will make the world a better place for humans. However, this is wrong for several reasons.

Firstly, animal testing is not as helpful in developing medicines as people think. Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans, and vice versa. As such, these trials are not just unnecessary but also profoundly unhelpful. For example, if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem, they may find that there are twelve drugs that do not work on the mouse. However, maybe one of those drugs would have worked on a human. As such, animal testing would have caused more problems than it solved.

There are many other reasons why experimenting with animals is wrong. Perhaps most importantly, it is grossly unethical to subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences for the benefit of humanity. Animals do not exist for the benefit of people. They are sentient beings that deserve better than to be caged and subjected to cruel and often unnecessary experiments.

In conclusion, people may argue that there are benefits that come from experimenting on animals, but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this. At best, these experiments are useless and at worst they are unethical and harmful both to humans and animals.

Final Notes

You can see that I have carefully crafted an argument that is strong. You may not agree with it, but it is hard to deny my points, which makes it effective in terms of Task Response. The structure is also solid and the ideas were well connected, making it very good in terms of Coherence and Cohesion . Note the inclusion of realistic and interesting ideas as well as concrete examples. My explanation of testing on mice was particularly effective here. It is better than giving some vague or unexplained idea.

Some people believe that wild animals should not be kept in zoos or other man-made environments as there is no longer a need for them in the 21st century.

Do you agree or disagree?

Many believe that zoos are antiquated and inhumane. In my opinion, though zoos raise legitimate ethical concerns, their value for conservation is greater than ever before.

Critics of zoos argue that the animal life simulated there is unnatural. In the majority of zoos, animals are kept in small enclosures or cages. Any visitor to a zoo is first struck by the lack of energy and vitality present in animals not living in their natural habitats and fending for themselves. This unnatural divorce from their intended purpose in life is inherently unethical. Added to this is the fact that there are now alternatives to zoos. In countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, where the Serengeti is located, there are sprawling national preserves that accomplish the dual aims of aiding animal conservation and allowing interested spectators to see wildlife up close.

Nonetheless, zoos are principal locations for wildlife research and preservation initiatives. Nearly every zoo will not only allow local researchers to learn more about animals, but also contain programs for increasing population numbers. The hastening of climate change has brought disastrous results to animal habitats around the world and thousands of animals are now endangered. It is nearly impossible to quickly restore their homes so the only option remaining is to breed animals in captivity to increase their numbers and then release them into the wild later. This situation is unfortunate but necessary and will only become more essential in years to come as greater numbers of species are threatened and zoos become a key location for raising both public awareness and population levels.

In conclusion, despite the moral hazards zoos entail, their effect on wildlife conservation is crucial. Countries should therefore continue to maintain their current zoos.

I am a bit confused by the word moral hazards.

Would you please explain them more clearly or at least give another example? 😀

Sure Mike – it basically just means there are risks related to morality.

For example, if you were to drive after drinking, that would be a really extreme moral hazard.

Sometimes if you work for a company that does a lot of bad things then that could be called a moral hazard.

It is the risk of doing something immoral or being involved in immorality.

Animal testing maybe needed these days in order to test drugs whether they can be used as medicine for treatment of a specific disease. Such kind of testing is necessary to prevent risking human life by direct testing on individuals. Animal testing can be used where it is necessary but in the case of cosmetics which is an extra thing,animal testing must not be allowed.

The fact that medicine's are important for healing different type of diseases they have to be manufactured in numerous number to reduce the diseases in the global area. When cosmetics or drugs have been manufactured they have to be tested to observe whether they are working properly or not, but the question is where do we test them? To fellow human beings. The answer is no because it may end up killing fellow human beings, so the best way is to test the cosmetics to animal and observe the outcome • Then the drug or cosmetic will be able to be determined whether it is working or not•

Examine the arguments in favour of and against animal experiments, and come to a conclusion on this issue. Over the recent years, a number of research and experiments being done on animals have increased significantly. In my opinion, such an act of using animals for various kind of experimentation should be stopped immediately as animals are often tortured and hurt during search experimentation. Humans think it to be beneficial to do experiments on animals for several reasons. Firstly, most of the medical research was successful as scientists were finally able to find cures for a number of diseases. However, I don not think that these arguments stand up to scrutiny. Animals suffer a lot of torture and are sometimes killed also during the research process. They are mostly used for the production of cosmetics, fashion garments, etc. Moreover, animals and human bodies are different; as a consequence, this testing may not provide safety that its proponents claim. IELTS Essay: Animal Experimentation

Some people argue that all experimentation on animals is bad and should be outlawed. However, others believe that important scientific discoveries can be made from animal experiments. Can experimentation on animals be justified? Are there any alternatives? A number of people believe that animal experimentation should be lawful for scientific studies as it helps to discover beneficial knowledge, while others hold the opposite view and think this is wrong. I think that any kind of experiment on animals is inhumane and scientists should look at other alternatives such as plant-based research instead. First of all, animal experimentation requires them to undergo severe tests and trials that are harmful to the creature. These beings are put into stressful conditions in order to derive results and gather data on a specific subject. For example, Rabbits and Mice are put into cycling machines to measure how quickly each individual species can perform. Such methods of testing are extremely harmful and do not justify the results no matter how beneficial they are. In addition, science should focus more on plant-based research as it does not harm the species or exploit natural life. A study conducted by National Planet shows that almost 50% of discoveries can be made while reducing the harm, by switching to the study of plants alternatively. Although it may not be as effective as experimenting with animals, its benefits still outweigh the drawbacks as millions of lives will be saved worldwide. All of this in turn will promote ethical and sustainable practices. To conclude, animal experimentation should be made unlawful and scientists should rather switch to plant-based research due to the fact that it results in mistreatment caused to the fauna.

1. Pets/Animals Vocabulary

Pets and animals are a big part of many people’s lives so it can be expected that you may come across IELTS writing and speaking questions related to pets and wildlife. This page contains some common IELTS pets and animals vocabulary words, phrases, and collocations, which you will need to answer questions about pets and animals. There are some exercises for you to practice IELTS vocabulary that you have learnt using real questions.

• Animal shelter – A place that takes care of rescued or orphaned animals
• Breed – A type of animal that has been bred by humans and shares similar characteristics. For example, dog breeds – Sheepdog, Labrador, Yorkshire terrier etc
• Cage – A structure of bars or wires to confine zoo animals or rodents
• Canines – Formal word for dogs
• Coat – The hair of a dog/cat
• Companionable – Friendly and sociable
• Curl up next to – Cuddle with/lay next to (informal).

• Puppy — A baby dog
• Puppy-dog eyes – The sweet facial expression a person or dog uses when they want something from you (informal)
• Reptiles – Cold-blooded animals with scales, for example, snakes
• Rodent — a type of small animal that has long sharp front teeth, for example, a hamster
• Species – Animals or plants that share characteristics and can reproduce
• Stray — A homeless animal such as a dog or cat
• To be put down – When an animal is put to death by injection because of illness or age
• To curb loneliness – To reduce feelings of feeling alone
• To provide companionship – To give friendship and affection to a person
• To tame — To make an animal feel comfortable around people

3. Wildlife Vocabulary and Collocations

There are many questions on the IELTS exam where you are asked to discuss animals and wildlife. The following is a list of some common IELTS pets and animals vocabulary words and collocations you can use to discuss issues concerning wildlife, and their environments. There is an activity for you to IELTS practice using the words with some real questions.

• Animal kingdom – All living animals
• Animal lover – A person who likes animals a lot
• Animal rights – The rights of animals to be protected against exploitation or abuse
• Amphibians– Animals that can live in the water and on land
• Battery farming – Industrial practice that involves putting lots of animals, usually chickens, in an extremely small space
• Breed in captivity — Impregnating a wild animal and bringing up the offspring in a controlled environment
• Brink of extinction – Close to becoming extinct
• Captivity – The condition of being imprisoned or confined, usually in a zoo
• Carnivores – Meat-eating animals
• Conservation – The protection of plants, habitats, or animals
• Destruction of natural habitats – The process that occurs when natural habitat is changed dramatically by humans
• Ecosystems – The relationship between living things in a particular environment
• Endangered – At the risk of extinction.
• Endangered species – Plants or animals that only exist in very small numbers and that may soon cease to exist
• Exotic — Something that is interesting or exciting because it comes from a faraway place
• Fangs — Large sharp teeth found on animals
• Free-range animal — A farm animal that roams freely during its life
• Guinea pig – a small rodent/ An idiom for anything that is experimented on
• Herbivores – An animal that eats plants
• Instinct – A natural reaction in animals to external stimuli
• Mammals – Animals that give birth to live young
• Marsupials – Characterised by the newborn being attached to the mother’s lower belly.
• Mating season – The period of the year when animals reproduce
• Pest — An unwanted/unwelcome insect or animal that attacks and damages things
• Poaching – Illegal hunting
• Predators – Animals that eat other animals
• Prey – An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.
• Roam – When animals are free to walk where they please without the confines of fences etc…
• Safari – an expedition to observe or hunt animals in their natural habitat, especially in East Africa.
• Safari Park – A recreation of wild animals’ habitat where visitors are charged to see animals who roam relatively free compared to those in a zoo
• Species – A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
• Tame – Not wild or dangerous, either naturally or because of training from humans
• The violation of animal rights – Actions that violate animal rights such as cruelty or neglect
• To keep something in captivity – To keep someone or something in a place and not allow them to leave
• To mate – To reproduce
• To treat animals humanely – To be kind to animals and to treat them well so they do not suffer
• Venomous – Poisonous

I have always been and one of the most interesting animals I have seen was a Siberian tiger, which I was in a local near where I live. I had always loved tigers and they are my favourite of cat. The reason I like them so much is because they are extremely rare and due to illegal Much of their has been destroyed because of climate change and human practices like logging. Therefore, I think their is vital. When I saw the tiger it opened its mouth and yawned and I got to see its huge white which were impressive and somewhat frightening! An interesting animal I have seen is a moose, which I saw in Canada. I was born and raised in the desert so going to a place filled with snow was for me. When I saw the moose it was much bigger than expected and didn’t look very or approachable so we stayed our distance. The tour guide told me it was . and that during that time of year the animals were extremely aggressive. Even though they are and don’t eat people, I still didn’t want to get too close! / 12
