Brief history of different grading systems

In 1785, students at Yale were ranked based on "optimi" being the highest rank, followed by second optimi, inferiore (lower), and pejores (worse). At William and Mary, students were ranked as either No. 1, or No. 2, where No. 1 represented students that were first in their class, while No. 2 represented those who were "orderly, correct and attentive." Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade. All of these examples show the subjective, arbitrary, and inconsistent nature with which different institutions graded their students, demonstrating the need for a more standardized, albeit equally arbitrary grading system.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade. This grading system however, was far stricter than those commonly used today, with a failing grade being defined as anything below 75%. The college later re-defined their grading system, adding the letter F for a failing grade (still below 75%). This system of using a letter grading scale became increasingly popular within colleges and high schools, eventually leading to the letter grading systems typically used today. However, there is still significant variation regarding what may constitute an A, or whether a system uses plusses or minuses (i.e. A+ or B-), among other differences.

An alternative to the letter grading system

Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).

Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.

This test grade calculator is a must if you're looking for a tool to help set a grading scale . Also known as test score calculator or teacher grader , this tool quickly finds the grade and percentage based on the number of points and wrong (or correct) answers. Moreover, you can change the default grading scale and set your own. Are you still wondering how to calculate test scores? Scroll down to find out – or simply experiment with this grading scale calculator.

If this test grade calculator is not the tool you're exactly looking for, check out our other grading calculators like the grade calculator .

To calculate the percentile test score, all you need to do is divide the earned points by the total points possible . In other words, you're simply finding the percentage of good answers:

percentage score = (#correct / #total) × 100

As #correct + #wrong = #total , we can write the equation also as:

percentage score = 100 × (#total - #wrong) / #total

Then, all you need to do is convert the percentage score into a letter grade . The default grading scale looks as in the table below:

Letter grade

If you don't like using the +/- grades, the scale may look like:

  • An A is 90% to 100%;
  • A B is 80% to 89%;
  • A C is 70% to 79%;
  • A D is 60% to 69%; and finally
  • F is 59% and below – and it's not a passing grade

Above, you can find the standard grading system for US schools and universities. However, the grading may vary among schools, classes, and teachers. Always check beforehand which system is used in your case.

Sometimes the border of passing score is not 60%, but, e.g., 50 or 65%. What then? We've got you covered – you can change the ranges of each grade! Read more about it in the last section of this article: Advanced mode options .

🙋 You might also be interested in our semester grade calculator and the final grade calculator .

Our test score calculator is a straightforward and intuitive tool!

Enter the number of questions/points/problems in the student's work (test, quiz, exam – anything). Assume you've prepared the test with 18 questions.

Type in the number the student got wrong . Instead – if you prefer – you can enter the number of gained points. Let's say our exemplary student failed to answer three questions.

Here we go! Teacher grader tool shows the percentage and grade for that score. For our example, the student scored 83.33% on a test, which corresponds to a B grade.

Underneath you'll find a full grading scale table . So to check the score for the next students, you can type in the number of questions they've got wrong – or just use this neat table.

That was a basic version of the test grade calculator. But our teacher grader is a much more versatile and flexible tool!

You can choose more options to customize this test score calculator. Just hit the Advanced mode button below the tool, and two more options will appear:

Increment by box – Here, you can change the look of the table you get as a result. The default value is 1, meaning the student can get an integer number of points. But sometimes it's possible to get, e.g., half-points – then you can use this box to declare the increment between the next scores.

Percentage scale – In this set of boxes, you can change the grading scale from the default one. For example, assume that the test was challenging and you'd like to change the scale so that getting 50% is already a passing grade (usually, it's 60% or even 65%). Change the last box, Grade D- ≥ value, from default 60% to 50% to reach the goal. You can also change the other ranges if you want to.

And what if I don't need +/- grades ? Well, then just ignore the signs 😄

How do I calculate my test grade?

To calculate your test grade:

  • Determine the total number of points available on the test.
  • Add up the number of points you earned on the test.
  • Divide the number of points you earned by the total number of points available.
  • Multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage score.

That's it! If you want to make this easier, you can use Omni's test grade calculator.

Is 27 out of 40 a passing grade?

This depends mainly on the grading scale that your teacher is using. If a passing score is defined as 60% (or a D-), then 27 out of 40 would correspond to a 67.5% (or a D+), which would be a passing grade. However, depending on your teacher’s scale, the passing score could be higher or lower.

What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?

This is a B-, or 82.5% . To get this result:

Use the following percentage score formula: percentage score = 100 × (#total - #wrong) / #total

Here, #total represents the total possible points, and #wrong , the number of incorrect answers.

Substitute your values: percentage score = 100 × (40 - 7) / 40 percentage score = 82.5%

Convert this percentage into a letter grade. In the default grading scale, 82.5% corresponds to a B-. However, grading varies — make sure to clarify with teachers beforehand.

Is 75 out of 80 an A?

Yes , a score of 75 out of 80 is an A according to the default grading scale. This corresponds to a percentage score of 93.75%.

    How to calculate your grade

With the help of this grade calculator you can calculate your current weighted grade or unweighted grade in terms of percentage, letter grade, or GPA. The tool will also output the weight of all remaining exams, and assignments and has the option of calculating the minimum score you need to obtain on a final exam in order to achieve a target overall grade for a class or course.

To use the calculator, enter the number of grades you currently have, then each grade as a percent or letter grade , and finally the weight each grade adds towards the overall. If no weights are entered, the weights are assumed equal and the calculator will output the unweighted average grade. Otherwise a weighted average grade will be produced in terms of percentage, GPA, and a letter grade.

What grade do I need on my final?

If you haven't yet got a score on the final exam for a given class, you can use this tool as a final grade calculator. In order to achieve a given grade goal for the entire class, course, or semester, a given minimum grade is required on the final exam, depending on both the weighted average grade to that date, and the weight of the final on the overall grade. This minimum required score can be calculated using the following formula:

Required final score = (Grade Goal - Current Grade x (100% - Weight of Final(%))) / Weight of Final(%)

The current grade is calculated based on the weighted average of all marks to date. The weight of the final test is calculated as 100% minus the combined weight of all grades to date. Therefore, if the combined weight of the scores you enter is 65% then the final exam will have a weight of 100% - 65% = 35%.

How to convert a grade to percentage?

Our grade calculator uses the following table to convert letter grades to percentages. Note that since this is not a universally applicable table, ideally one would want to know the exact percentage scores and use these as input for the calculator, otherwise the results may be slightly off.

Letter grades to percentages and GPA
Letter GradePercentageGPA
A+ 97-100% 4.3
A 93-96% 4.0
A- 90-92% 3.7
B+ 87-89% 3.3
B 83-86% 3.0
B- 80-82% 2.7
C+ 77-79% 2.3
C 73-76% 2.0
C- 70-72% 1.7
D+ 67-69% 1.3
D 63-66% 1.0
D- 60-62% 0.7
F 0-59% 0.0

Again, it is our recommendation that you check with your local school or college and enter percentage grades instead of letter grades for the most accurate calculation. Note that while U.S. colleges and schools are likely to use the above grading, educational institutions in other countries may use a vastly different GPA scale.

Important Notes

You can use our grade calculator to calculate the final exam grade you will need to achieve the overall course grade you desire. Our calculator requires you to enter the current percentage grade you have currently obtained for that course together with the weight of the final exam as a percentage value. However, if you do not know what your current grade is, for the question "Do you know your Current Grade?" select the answer "no." Enter the grades you have received for all of your assignments, homework, test, labs, and anything else that contributes to your final grade, as well as the weight of each grade. Our grade calculator will automatically calculate not only your current grade but the grade you need to achieve on your final exam to achieve the overall course grade you desire. In addition, both the minimum and maximum course overall grades will be provided.

Inputting Data in our Grade Calculator

When entering your current grade and the weight of your final exam, our calculator will assume that your current grade has been based on the weight of the course prior to your final exam and calculates it as the input weight subtracted from 100%. If your current grade hasn't taken your coursework into account, the generated results will not be accurate.

How are Grades Calculated?

Most classes use whats known as a 'weighted' system, where each group of assessments (homework assignments, essays, exams, etc.) are each worth a different proportion of your total grade.

However, it isn't as simple as adding all your points up at the end of the semester. You may get 10/10 points on your homework, and 10/10 points on a quiz, but the quiz might be worth more relative to your overall class grade.

If that sounds complicated but you're interested in learning more have a look at our guide on How to Calculate Grades , it's chock full of everything you need to know, and then some.

Grade Calculator – Step by Step Instructions

You can use a grade calculator for 2 reasons:

  • Determining your overall grade in a course
  • Determining what you need to score to earn your ideal final grade

1. Calculate Grades

  • Determine the grading scale for your course. Usually your teacher will provide you with his/her point system—check the course syllabus for details. See how much each assignment category is worth (i.e. midterm–30%, quizzes–25%, etc.)
  • Click the “Course Name” box, and enter the name of your course.
  • Enter the Assessment type (quiz, test, midterm, homework, etc.)
  • Enter your grade on the assessment. You can enter a percentage or a letter grade.
  • Enter the percentage weight for each assessment (i.e. midterm–30%, quizzes–25%, etc.)
  • Repeat this process for all courses and assessments.

Grade Calculator Step 1 - Enter Grades

Pro tip:  It is important that you keep all graded work until the end of the semester as teachers are humans and may enter your grade in the system incorrectly.

2. Calculate Final Grades

Grade Calculator Step 2 - Final Grades

  • In the “Desired Grade” column, enter the grade you would like to earn for the course.
  • In the “Final Worth” column, enter the percentage that the final exam is worth of your total course grade (i.e. final exam=45% of your total grade for a course.)
  • Grade calculator will provide you with an estimate of the final exam grade you will need to achieve the course grade that you desire.

The grade calculator will do the easy part by determining the grade you need. Now it’s up to you to do the work to earn the grade you desire.

How do I improve my grades?

If your current grade in a course isn’t exactly what you want it to be, there are still several things you can do to improve your grade. Also, if you have figured out what you need to earn to get your desired grade in a course, you might be wondering how to earn those extra points. Once you’re motivated to improve your course results, there are many things you can do to be on the road to success. Here are a few helpful tips to improve your semester grade for a course.

1. Earn the effort points

Teachers often have assignments that are based on effort. Sometimes these are homework assignments or participation points. Whenever a teacher is willing to give points for effort, make sure to put in the effort and get those points. Complete the homework assignments. Participate in class. These points are within your control. Effort grades should always be 100%. Do the work, and you will start to see improvements in your grade.

2. Talk to the teacher

When you’re looking for ways to improve in a course, start by talking to your teacher. Ask him if there are suggestions he might have to help you. Look to see if you have any missing assignments, and ask the teacher if he might give you half-credit for the work if you offer to complete it. Maybe the teacher will allow you a chance to retake a quiz or test that wasn’t your best.  Perhaps the teacher will offer you an extra credit assignment or make you aware of a future extra credit assignment you can complete. Of course, these changes are up to your teacher; however, the willingness to ask for help is completely within your power.

3. Find help understanding course material

If you do not understand what is being taught in your course, get help as soon as possible. Seek out a tutor. Find a friend in the course who understands and who will help you. Perhaps there are some Youtube videos that might help you understand the material being presented. There are also other online materials that might help you see the material in a different way.

4. Create better study habits

It’s always a good idea to do a little bit of review each day of course material rather than to try to cram it all in at the last minute. Set aside a few minutes each day to look over previously presented information. Interact with the material in some way. If you have vocabulary words, write them multiple times on a piece of paper. If you have new math concepts, do some practice problems. Write down questions that might arise, and bring them back to your teacher the next day so you can get some clarification. You can also use flashcards to flip through information whenever you have a few spare minutes. If you prefer to interact with technology, there are plenty of review websites online that can be used. Quizlet.com is a popular site that has many pre-made lists of interactive flashcards and activities.

5. Commit, plan, and make it happen

Ultimately changing your grade will require changing your habits. Use a planner or a calendar to write down your commitment to your new habits and your goals for your courses. Schedule your study time, and stick to it. Provide yourself with some boundaries such as no electronics until you’re finished with homework. It will take discipline, but it will be worth it in the end.

With a few simple changes, you can make improvements to your course performance. Once you dedicate yourself to working hard and seeking help, you can begin earning the grades you want to receive. Your desired grade can be within your reach.

Grade Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate class grade.

To calculate a class grade, you must know your teacher or professor’s grading system. If your teacher or professor uses a total points system, you first need to add up all of your grades. Then, add up how many points were possible for each of those grades. Divide how many points you earned by the number of points possible, and you will determine your class grade. If your teacher or professor uses a grading system based on categories of different values, it is more complicated. For example, some teachers made tests and quizzes worth more points that classwork and homework. If your teacher uses categories, here is how you determine your class grade: Separately, for each category, add up all of your scores. Then, add up how many points were possible in that category. Divide your scores total by the points possible. That is how you determine the category grade. Do this for each category. You must know how much each category is weighted. Usually, this information will be listed on a class syllabus or a teacher’s web site. Multiply your category grade by how much it is weighted. For example, if tests are worth 50% of your class grade, multiply your test category grade by .50. If homework is worth 50% of your grade, multiply your homework category grade by .50. Then, add up the two scores. That is your class grade.

How to calculate report card grades?

To calculate report card grades in high school, you must know how much your final exam is worth. Normally, final exams are worth 20% of your report card grade. That means the first quarter is worth 40% and the second quarter is worth 40%. Take your first quarter grade and multiple it by .40. Take your second quarter grade and multiply it by .40. Then, take your final exam grade and multiply it by .20. Add those three scores together, and that will be your report card grade.

How to calculate grade percentages?

To calculate grade percentages, you must know the score you received on the particular assignment or test. You must also know the total points possible. Divide the score you received by the total points possible. That is your grade percentage.

What Are the Types of Grades?

Your teachers and professors evaluate your performance in class and provide grades that represent your efforts. T he grading system varies from school to school. F or example, some schools only write “Pass” or “Fail,” while some give a detailed evaluation of the student’s performance.

Your grades may be written using percentage, where your score is labeled from 0 percent to 100 percent, or with letters that are given with corresponding scores. The number and difficulty level of your class also factors in your resulting grade.

Here is a table of the corresponding value of your grades:

A+ 97-100 4.0
A 93-96 4.0
A- 90-92 3.7
B+ 87-89 3.3
B 83-86 3.0
B- 80-82 2.7
C+ 77-79 2.3
C 73-76 2.0
C- 70-72 1.7
D+ 67-69 1.3
D 65-66 1.0
E/F Below 65 0.0

Here are some of the types of grades you might see in your grading card:

A, A+, A- The highest mark you can achieve. Excellent!
B, B+, B- 80% to 89% mark: Good job.
C, C+, C- Ranges from 70% to 79%: Satisfactory results.
D, D+, D- Requires more effort, but still considered.
P Pass
S Satisfactory
U Unsatisfactory
W Withdrew
I Incomplete
R Repeat
F Fail
* No grade available

Aside from percentage and letter grading, you may also be provided with a different system of measuring your academic capabilities:

  • Mastery Grading – You can receive a mark of “Master” or “Passer” if you reach a certain level of accomplishment.
  • Standards Grading – Students’ performances are graded using a standard.
  • Narrative Grading – Professors, staff, and faculty give you a review and commendation.

How is a student’s overall grade typically calculated?

How do professors determine the weightage for each assignment or exam?

Weightages are often assigned based on the relative importance of different topics or the effort required for each task.

Can a single low score significantly impact a student’s overall grade?

Yes, if an assignment or exam carries a high weightage, a low score on it can have a significant impact on the overall grade.

What is a weighted grade?

A weighted grade takes into account the different weightages of assignments, exams, and other assessments to calculate a more accurate representation of a student’s performance.

How can a student calculate their own course grade?

Students can calculate their grade by multiplying their scores by the respective weightages and then summing these values.

What is an “incomplete” grade?

An incomplete grade is given when a student is unable to complete the course requirements within the allotted time due to special circumstances. They’re usually given an extension to finish the work.

How does extra credit affect grade calculation?

Extra credit can boost a student’s grade by adding extra points to their total score, potentially improving their final grade.

What is a “curve” in grade calculation?

Curving involves adjusting scores to fit a predetermined distribution, which can impact how individual scores map to letter grades.

How does grade calculation differ in pass/fail courses?

Pass/fail courses usually do not use traditional letter grades but instead focus on whether the student meets a minimum performance standard to pass the course.

How can a student recover from a low grade early in the course?

By focusing on subsequent assignments and exams with higher weightages, a student can gradually improve their overall grade.

What is a cumulative GPA?

A cumulative GPA includes all courses taken over a student’s academic career, providing an overall measure of their performance.

How can a student predict the grades they need to achieve a desired final grade?

By using a grade calculator, students can input their current scores and desired final grade to determine what scores they need on future assignments or exams.

How do professors ensure the fairness and accuracy of their grade calculations?

Professors often use rubrics, clear grading criteria, and occasionally double-check calculations to maintain fairness and accuracy.

What happens if a professor makes a grading mistake?

Students can usually approach the professor to rectify the error, providing evidence of the mistake if needed.

How do weighted grades affect the impact of different assignments on the final grade?

Weighted grades ensure that assignments with higher weightages have a proportionally greater impact on the final grade.

What is a “drop score” in grade calculation?

A drop score is a policy where the lowest score among a set of assignments or exams is excluded from the grade calculation, allowing for minor setbacks.

Are there standardized methods for grade calculation across different institutions?

While many institutions use similar principles, specific grading policies can vary widely, leading to differences in calculation methods.

Enter Class Grades

Calculator Instructions

  • In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth and the grade that you would like to get in the class. For example, your final test might be worth 20% of your overall grade and you want to get at least a 93% in the class. You would enter these numbers into the form.
  • In the bottom half of the form, enter a description (optional) of the classwork, the grade received for that classwork, and the weight of the classwork. Most class grades are made up of several components such as homework assignments, tests, exams, quizzes, class participation, attendance, etc. For example, a class exam might be worth 10% of your grade and you received a 95% on the test. You would enter those values into the form.
  • If you need more than four rows, press the "Add Row" button to add an additional line. You can add as many rows as you need.
  • Once you have finished entering your grades, press the "Calculate" button and the grade you need on the final exam will be displayed.

Final Grade Formula

final grade = ((g wanted x w total ) - gw) / w final

w total = w 1 + w 2 + w 3 + ... + w final

w 1 = weight of assignment #1

w final = weight of final exam

gw = g 1 x w 1 + g 2 x w 2 + g 3 x w 3 + ...

g 1 = grade for assignment #1

g wanted = grade wanted in the class

Example Calculation

Let's say your class has the following grading plan.

Assignments Weight
Project #1 10%
Project #2 10%
Quiz #1 20%
Quiz #2 20%
Mid-Term Test 20%
Final Exam 20%

Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.

Assignments Grade Received
Project #1 91%
Project #2 85%
Quiz #1 75%
Quiz #2 95%
Mid-Term Test 97%
Final Exam Not Yet Taken

Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.

First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:

w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%

Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.

gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%

Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:

final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%

This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!

What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?

Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.

Assignments Possible Points
Project 100
Homework #1 100
Homework #2 150
Quiz 200
Mid-Term Test 200
Final Exam 250

Let's assume you received the following grades.

Assignments Points Earned
Project 91 out 100
Homework #1 85 out of 100
Homework #2 120 out of 150
Quiz 180 out of 200
Mid-Term Test 190 out of 200
Final Exam Not Yet Taken

To enter these grades in the calculator above, you first need to calculate your grade percentage for each assignment using the following formula:

grade percentage = points earned / possible points x 100

So taking your mid-term test grade as an example, we get the following:

mid-term test = 190 points earned / 200 possible points x 100 = 95%

In the weight column of the calculator, you would enter the possible points for each assignment.

Assuming you wanted to get at least a 90% in the class and your final exam is worth 250 points (i.e.the weight), you would enter the following information into the calculator.

Classwork Grade Weight
Project 91% 100
Homework #1 85% 100
Homework #2 80% 150
Quiz 90% 200
Mid-Term Test 95% 200

In this example, you would need to get a 93.6% on your final in order to get a 90% in the class.

Brief overview of how it works.

To start working with a tool, it is useful to understand how it works. The Grade Calculator consists of three columns that should be completed and a box for the average mark results. To start calculations, it is necessary to enter numerical values in the Mark and Weight columns. Only 0 to 100 numbers are available in the fields. You can also add rows by clicking the +ADD ROW box and edit information by clicking the RESET box. The Calculate computes results by different formulas depending on the required type of a grade: final, weighted, semester or for a certain assignment.

Final Grade Calculator For Your Final Target

The Final Grade Calculator is designed to calculate the percentage average mark that is required for an assignment or final exam in order to get a certain total grade. It comprises three fields of data:

Current grade – that is the points achieved for all the evaluated assignments to the moment of calculation

Final exam weight shows the importance of the test or exam that will be passed

Required final grade – that is the target value that a student wants to achieved in total for the subject.

According to a calculation formula, the required final grade is calculated by determining the weight of current grade, then weighted current grade, weighted final exam grade and weighted required grade, as follows:

Final exam grade = (weighted required grade – weighted current grade)/ final exam weight,

where each weighted grade is the grade times its weight within final total grade.

If a current or required semester grade needs to be calculated, the Semester Grade Calculator is used. It works on the same principle as the Final Grade Calculator, except that it gives the semester final grade results. The Calculator contains three Grade fields: First Quarter Grade, Second Quarter Grade, Final Exam; and the corresponding Percent of Semester Grade fields as well as the Final Grade field. The quarter grades represent the grades for classes and the percent of grade fields show their percentage meanings. To determine the required value, all the known values should be entered in the fields. The Semester Grade Calculator makes it possible to find either the semester final grade or the grade needed for the final exam in order to get a required final grade. In the second case, it is necessary to specify the desired value in the Final Grade field. Different grade calculators are very useful in studying and are often used by students in order to succeed in classes.

Weight Your Progress With The Weighted Grade Calculator

Sometimes, you may need to estimate the average grade you received for finished assignment(s). A weighted grade calculator can come in useful for this. It computes the total grade weight in percentage. The weighted grade calculator finds a weighted grade on the basis of received grade and its weight within the final grade. The grade percentage calculator returns the grade percentage within the total points. It is calculated by dividing the received points by the final possible points times 100%. Many high schools and colleges provide calculators to evaluate a grade point average (GPA). College grade calculators can determine both the average value of accumulated achievements in a course or in a set of classes over a period of time. Grades are usually granted for a number of tasks, tests and quizzes. A college grade calculator may be based on letter (A-E) and numerical or just numerical ranking that represents the grading. The average value is calculated by adding up all final grades and dividing the received count by the number of the grades. Calculators may vary significantly from one educational institution to another. It depends on different academic honors, methods of grade calculation evaluation criteria, grading systems, etc.

How It Works

Before you start working with this tool, we suggest getting acquainted with it so you can understand how to use it. When opening the Grade Calculator, you have to complete three columns and an additional box where you must specify your average grades. Make sure to enter only numerical values in both Weight and Mark columns. You can enter numbers ranging from 0 to 100. If you need to add rows, click + ADD ROW. If you want to edit information, click RESET. The Grade Calculator uses various algorithms of calculation depending on the type of a grade that you need. Thus, you are able to calculate weighted, final, and semester grades as well as your grade for an assignment.

Final Grade Calculator

The Final Grade Calculator helps you obtain an estimated total grade by calculating a required grade for a final exam or an assignment. This value is displayed as a percentage. There are three fields that must be completed:

  • Current grade is the field where you have to specify marks achieved at this moment.
  • Final exam weight is the parameter that reflects the importance of the exam or test.
  • Required final grade is the target total grade that you want to achieve for the subject.

To calculate the required final grade, our Grade Calculator uses the weighted current grade, weighted required grade, weighted current grade, and weighted final exam grade. The formula looks as follows:

Final exam grade = (weighted required grade – weighted current grade) / final exam weight

You can also use the Semester Grade Calculator to calculate the required semester grade. It works the same way as the Final Grade Calculator, but its results are calculated for the semester. This program has three fields for grades: the First and the Second Quarter Grades, and the Final Exam. Other two fields contain the Final Grade and the Percent of Semester Grade. The Percent of Grade field represents the percentage value of quarter grades. In turn, the quarter grades show your grades for classes. You have to enter all necessary information to calculate the required final mark. The Semester Grade Calculator allows you to easily calculate the semester grade as well as to estimate the grade for the final exam that you must get to achieve the final grade that you need. In the latter case you need to specify the necessary value in the Final Grade field. Grade calculators can help students achieve their goals and improve their performance in classes.

Evaluate Your Progress with the Weighted Grade Calculator

Many students want to estimate their average grades to get a complete picture of their real success and set proper goals for the future. The Weighted Grade Calculator is a simple and useful tool that allows you to do it easily. It calculates the percentage of the total grade weight. The weighted grade is calculated based on the weight of received grades within the final grade. To calculate the grade percentage for total points, you can use the Grade Percentage Calculator. In this case, the received points are divided by the final possible points. Many colleges and high schools provide similar calculators for students so that they can calculate GPA – a grade point average. Such calculators usually work with the average value of your achievements in a set of classes or in a course, considering a certain period of time. You have to specify grades for a number of quizzes, tests, or any tasks. Some college calculators show numerical values or numerical rankings, while others display letters (A-E). If you sum this value with all your final grades and divide this number by the number of grades, you will obtain the average value. All educational institutions have different calculators, so if you can’t calculate a certain grade using a calculator of your university or college, you can easily do it with the help of our online Grade Calculator.

Grades in Academic Classes

Cumulative GPA, as well as the grades earned in the 34 courses required for admission, is an important part of the application review process. Weighted GPA is also part of the review, if included on transcript.

Application Essay

An IU-specific essay of 200-400 words is required.

Standardized Test Scores

ACT or SAT scores are accepted as either official or self-reported scores. Self-reported scores can be entered in the Indiana University application. If offered admission, the offer will be contingent upon receipt of official test scores from testing agencies, which must match or be higher than those self-reported during the admissions process. IU's test-optional admissions policy allows students (both domestic and international) to choose at the point of application whether to have SAT or ACT test scores considered as part of the admissions review. For applicants who choose not to have test scores considered, a greater emphasis will be placed on grades in academic courses and grade trends in the admissions review. Applicants receive equal consideration for admission and scholarship to the Jacobs School of Music, regardless of whether or not they applied under the test-optional policy. There are several groups of students who will be required to provide SAT or ACT scores. Homeschooled students, students who have attended a school with non-traditional evaluation methods where traditional alpha or numerical grades are not assigned, and student athletes subject to NCAA eligibility standards will be required to submit a standardized test score. Applicants who are at least 21 years old or have been out of high school for three or more years may be considered for admission without standardized SAT and/or ACT test scores.
