Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city.

My village is called Aadapur. It is in the Bankura district of West Bengal. Our community comprises about 150 to 200 families; the total number of people dwelling here is nearly 2000. I have a family of four – it consists of my parents, my elder sister, and myself. While my sister helps my mother with household chores, my father does manual labor in the nearby construction site.

Anantapur is a small village, but a lovely one. One long stretch of road runs across the entire town, branching and bending here and there, and giving birth to lanes and bylanes. Small mud huts and cottages sit in two parallel rows on either side of the road, facing one another. All the households of mud and sand; only a few handfuls of cement-made buildings are in the area.

We have some facilities here and there. At the very center of the village stands the community village school’ it is aided by the Government. Anantapur is still on its way to development. The village had its first electric connection only a few months back. We have electricity for 14 hours in households from four o’clock in the evenings to six o’clock in the mornings. We do face minor power-cuts once or twice, but those are very rare.

The local bazaar is 10 minutes from our area. If one has to buy any essential commodities or food items, they can go to the market on foot; they can also take a rickshaw ride of 5 minutes. The bazaar is flocked with markets that sell essential, necessary products. The bazaar also has a government ration shop. The entire village gathers in a queue before the ration shop once every month for their share of subsidized rations. Apart from these shops, the village itself has four or five small shops here and there.

Description of My Village

Being in the village allows me to interact more closely with flora and fauna- living in the city does not give you as many opportunities to look after and learn about farm animals. My favourite part about visiting my village would be the food and manners because the inhabitants of a village are kind by nature and enjoy inviting people to meals and looking after them. My village is a small place with basic necessities. Rather than having a mall, the village has several small shops for many different kinds of services. In origin, I’m from Bangladesh. But after the partition, my family came and settled in a remote village in Murshidabad. Presently, I stay in Kolkata with my parents, but several times I have heard my father remember his childhood days in the village.

During the vacations, I often visit the village. People are so innocent there and all of them love us so much. They care for their nature and do not harm it like the urban people. Also, they have still kept their tribal festivals intact. I love to enjoy their traditional food and this bonding between my people in the village. Whenever I visit my village, it has always been so ni experience.

Since my childhood days, I used to fantasize about spending my life in our ancestral village. Staying in a village has never been an opportunity for me because I am born and brought up in the city. We hardly get a chance to meet my ancestral people in the village of Murshidabad. The story goes back to the partition of India when my great grandparents migrated from Bangladesh and settled in Murshidabad to protect their families. At that time they were extremely poor and had a humble income to spend their days. They were followed by many others.

The village is now much more developed than it was when first inhabited. When I visit the village with my parents, during the vacation, it gets quite enjoyable to meet them after a long time. The clean air and water are beautiful with pure fruits and vegetables to eat. The reads are of red soil and soft to walk over. The humble neighbour of that village is the main reason I love my village.

Some of our relatives still live in the village. Their primary profession is agriculture. During my visit, my cousins took me to show the agricultural fields. It was totally a mesmerizing experience. The entire horizon was green and such a peaceful life that I could never experience in the city.

Life in a village is much different from what we experience in the city. The urban lifestyle does not provide us with all views of the Earth. The world has much more greenery and beauty than it seems to us. The city definitely gives a modern life, better infrastructure, more communication, and quick connections. But it also takes away the natural goodness from us.

I find myself extremely lucky to think that I am from a village. I stay in a distant village in the suburbs of Darjeeling. The best part of living in a village is that I can stay far away from the daily crowd of the city. The city is too confusing and suffocating for me. I cannot bear staying there even for a week. I always crave the peace I get in my own village. The village called Kasaimara is extremely beautiful in its flora and fauna. The air is clean and pure like the innocent people of my village.

We do not have many modern amenities like the city. We often face problems with network and communication, we do not have good schools or hospitals. But still, the peace of nature allows us to live a long and healthy life. I love to take long walks up the hill slopes in the morning or often cycle all the way. It saves the cost of taking any gym practice and is also helpful in maintaining a healthy body and peaceful mind.

Due to no pollution, we always have a majestic view of the mountains from our village. Around 50-50 families live in our village. For weekend and holiday picnics, all our villagers come together and celebrate with our ethnic music and dance. It is not like the mechanical life of the city. Everything we do here has a spontaneous charm and is full of life.

The environment of my village is so beautiful. The people work hard to preserve ethnic integrity. We have a rich history o folktales and myths. As a child, I often heard my grandparents tell me stories about them. They are precious and innocent like the people. They easily befriend other members, even from a different community. My village celebrates our own tribal festivals with great enjoyment and pomp. I am extremely lucky that I am a proud villager of India. We do not have many facilities, but at the end of the day, we are at peace with ourselves and others.

Facilities of our Village

Our village is second to none in beauty but we can not ignore the fact of lack of facilities. There is facility of electricity in our village but we have huge problem of load shedding.

It is really very big problem for the villagers. There is also no high school in our village. There is small primary school but there is lack of facilities in the school.

It is difficult for teacher to teach there. High school is quite far away and most of kids find it difficult to get education there. There is no hospital in our village and villagers have to visit city for their cure.

Village life has certain charms. Very few people can avoid the attraction of serene life in Bangladeshi villages. Here clustered green trees will provide you shade and chirping of numerous birds will wake you up in the morning. Those who prefer village life have some specific reasons Firstly, the density of population is low in villages. Hence, the villages are usually calm and serene. Those who love quiet must love villages. Secondly, the village air is fresh and less polluted than that of towns because fewer vehicles ply in the village roads and there are fewer factories in rural areas. Thirdly, most of the agricultural products are produced in the villages. As a result, fresh fruits and vegetables are available in villages. Fourthly, rural areas are more scenic than the towns. The village greenery and natural beauty are always enjoyable At last, living in villages are less costly than living in towns.

My Native Village Essay - The name of my native village is Noapara where I was born and brought up. It is under Raozan Thana in the district of Chittagong. It is an ideal village in Bangladesh. It is 12 kilometres away from the Thana Headquarters. Our village is about three miles long and two miles broad. About ten thousand people of different classes and communities live here. They are the Muslims, the Hindus and the Buddhists. People of different occupation live here. Some of the inhabitants are Government employees. Others are teachers, professors, lawyers, doctors and merchants and the rest are farmers. Moreover, carpenters, artisans, fishermen, weavers, goldsmiths etc. live here. The system of communication in this village is remarkable. A district council road runs through our village. There are many kutcha roads also. People can reach the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway by bus. There are two primary schools, a high school, a Madrasha, a branch post office, a village market and a police station. There is also a Health Complex in our village. The village is famous for its social and cultural activities.

A daily market is held in the morning every day and the ‘hat' where we get all the necessary things of life sits twice in a week. The villagers observe different festivals. The Hindus observe the Durgapuja, the Saraswati Puja etc. The Muslims enjoy the two Eids and other festivals. The Buddhists also celebrate the Buddha Purnima. The climate of our village is exactly suitable for our health. The river, the large cornfields, the garden, the orchards etc. add to its beauty. Fresh vegetables, drinking water, fish, milk, meat etc. are available in plenty."

The soil of the village is fertile & suitable. So we get rice, jute oilseed etc. in plenty. Every family has a garden near the dwelling house. Flower-plants and fruit-trees are grown there. Most of the villagers earn their livelihood by selling surplus fruits and vegetables. So to speak, it helps them economically. The people of my village are very gentle. They live in perfect harmony with one another.

There is no clash among the different castes. Elders are respected and obeyed, and the underdogs are not exploited and hated. Ours is a progressive village. I am very proud of being a son of such a village. On the whole, It is a paradise for us.

My Village Essay - The name of my village is Surjamoni. It is very old, silent and peaceful village. It is situated on the bank of a big canal. It is about two miles long and half-a-mile wide. The village is in Mathbaria Thana under Pirojpur district.

It is only one mile away from the Mathbaria bazar. More than eight thousand people live in our village. Most of them are Muslims. The rest people are Hindus. The people of our village are engaged in various occupations. Most of the people of our village are agriculturists. The village hat sits daily there in the morning for selling fish, milk, vegetables etc. The climate of our village is very suitable for health. There is no brick field in our village. The southern and northern sides of the village are open. So, the villagers get always fresh air.

There is no scarcity of pure drinking water here. Most of the villagers are pious and simple. There are arrangements of the village fair, Jatra, circus etc. in our village. On the whole, our village is an ideal village. I feel proud of living in such a village.

- April 18, 2019 - Remembering

Wayne was my best friend from second grade (our class photo below) through high school. He was very intelligent, but without guile or complications, and always a good friend.

Remember Mr Stephenson, the sience teacher in Junior high? Poor guy, we gave him lynigitis and he guit teaching.

Two score years and forty-nine days ago we were involved in the culminating act of our years together in the Moscow School system. Graduation!!! I had to look in my old Bear Tracks to find that Dean Phillip C. Petersen delivered the commencement address, but boy, I'm hard pressed to remember what he said. I do remember singing "No Man Is an Island" with the Choralaires , under the direction of H. James Schoepflin. And I have a vague memory of walking across the stage, shaking someone's hand and receiving a diploma. I've heard it said that if you remember the '60s you weren't there, maybe I was only half there.

I do remember in the sixth grade in the Whitworth School (1912 building) that it was more interesting watching and hearing the woodpeckers drumming on the steeple of the old Swedish Lutheran Church than it was to pay attention to what Mrs. LaFollette was trying to drill into my thick skull.

It was quite entertaining in physics class to watch Emery Barrus pretending to blow his nose on his shirttail. That drove poor Mrs. Day wild.

I could only take so much of that, physics that is, so transferred into Chorolaires at the semester break. It seems like a funny thing to do for a kid who wanted to go on to be a high school science teacher!

Speaking about one's aim in life, I recall an incident that took place in the first grade. In the Russell School, the boy's bathrooms had the old style urinals extended upwards from the floor to about as high as a first grader is tall (at that time I never understood the need for walk-in urinals). After a vigorous recess we always headed for the lavatory before returning to class. Side by side doing our thing I heard someone yelp, "that kid peed on my foot". Glancing down I was shocked as I discovered I was the guilty one. Perhaps this is why Ken Caldwell and I weren't the closest of friends throughout our twelve years of school. I really think I did apologize, Ken!

No, I don't remember the name of my school bus (#10?) BUT I do remember our bus driver, Fred Horning. He was truly a laid-back, cool man. I was on the fringe end of the bus route. If my sisters or I weren't out by the road, Fred would still stop and wait. If he saw this was going to take awhile, he had a stool which he got out. Along with a rag and some Windex, he'd wash the windows of the bus while my sisters and I got our bodies out there. I have 8mm movies to prove that! Amazing! Also, in the Fall when there were apples on the trees along the road, Fred would stop, let all of us out to pick an apple. Then, we could eat them on the bus. Have times ever changed! Remember the school bus skating parties in Lewiston? Those were fun.

Also, does anyone remember Mr. Gould?

Watching in fascination as Bruce Davey flipped his front teeth in and out of place over and over and over again in US history as he sat in the front row and stared at Mrs. Schuette. Must have been a bit distracting for her!

I have a million memories....
John Weber's '50 Studebaker without doors and his instant acceptance and friendship for the kid from down south, playing city league basketball in the old gym, Michelle....., the "contest" and trying to keep up with Tash, fishing on the Little Joe, sneaking out for a beer before we could face typing class, diving into snowbanks, painting the water tower, that fantastic '64 football team and coach Scott, M-club initiation (nobody could get away with that today!!), Morris breaking Bruce's nose between class, walking down to the bakery shop over lunch break, sloe gin, Shakey's pizza, the drive-in and trying to clean up Dave's mom's car the next day (what was she thinking letting us take her car?), Spring skiing at Sun Valley, hookey-bobbing around town, cruising main street....

I tell stories about some of the crazy things we did and nobody believes them!! Thank you all so much for enriching my life....and helping me live through it!!

One time I stopped by to see a friend. There were some other girls there, and we sat around the table talking. There was one girl, though, who hovered behind me and said, "How would you like to have your hair cut?" Snip. Well, I really hadn't planned on having my hair cut that day. I mean, I didn't know it was on my agenda for that day. She didn't wait for me to say, "Yes", "No", "Let me think about it", or "Over my dead body". I think it is possible, though, that I may have said something like "uh" or "um", or something along that line. I was so stunned that I think I may have been comatose for a moment or two. However, I couldn't very well go around with my hair long on one side and with a short bob on the other side, so I ended up with a short haircut that I hadn't planned on. But, it was kind of funny. Kind of. Sort of. In a way. I guess. Maybe. I do know she meant well. She had good intentions. She simply felt she must intervene on my behalf. My hair must go! And it did.

Is it possible that we had some kind of strange affection for Maybelle Gehrke? I mean, personally, I wouldn't give someone I did not like the time of day. Most of us play practical jokes on those we consider friends, not people we dislike. I believe that if a student needed help, Miss Gehrke would be the first in line. In fact, I think there is at least one graduate in the class of '64 that would not have received a diploma had it not been for Maybelle Gehrke.

He took verbal exception and referred to me as the close relative to some female dog among other things, but never mentioned it again. Time passed and it was history, at least for me. Apparently, not for Dick. He was again at the house and oblivious to me, grabbed that pellet gun and 'ZAP' right in the same place. Revenge was his. The pain subsided shortly and I really didn't give it much more thought. Turn about is fair play. Right? A few days later I catch a glimpse of my rear in the bathroom mirror. A perfectly round unbelievably purple bruise 4 - 5 inches in diameter. The next time I see Nelson, I advise him of my rather bizarre bruise. He says, "Ya, I know."

Who can possibly forget Maybelle Gehrke??? So many memories and most of them so politically incorrect.... Being chained in the library; having live chickens with you while chained in the library; getting the "evil eye stare" for whistling softly under your breath (over and over and over); seeing how many spitwads in takes to fill one of the "upside down" bowls on the ceiling lights; over the course of an hour, seeing how many books you can creatively "re-file" in new and interesting locations; being summoned into the back-room for a serious heart to heart talk; being banished next door to the study hall where nothing interesting happens..... Those were the days!!

Does anybody remember Mr. Shane? MJHS 7th grade ALL girl Math class! That poor man, I've always wondered if that was a planned thing, wonder if that's why he left the school district?? We should have given him a "survivor" award! Sure was fun though and he was a super guy!

Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruki, a prince of the region. The town lay on important land and water trade routes, and it grew and prospered.
