For the right student, online college is a convenient, flexible way to start an academic career. However, distance learning may not work for everyone . To determine whether you should enroll in a management certificate program online or on campus, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What are my other obligations? Flexibility is one of the main selling points for distance learning. Asynchronous delivery allows students to watch lectures and complete coursework at their convenience, offering maximum scheduling flexibility. If you’re juggling multiple commitments while enrolled in college, consider prioritizing asynchronous programs.
  • What’s my budget? Online learning is often more affordable than on-campus learning, as online students generally avoid costs associated with housing and transportation. Additionally, some public universities allow all online students to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates, although this does not apply to most of the community colleges ranked in this guide.
  • What’s my learning style? Asynchronous online learning requires diligent discipline, organizational skills and time management. If you need more structure to do your best work, on-campus or hybrid learning might provide a better fit.

There are two important types of college accreditation : institutional and programmatic.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education supervise institutional accrediting agencies, which vet schools for the quality of their faculty, finances and academics, among other areas.

You should consider only accredited schools. You must attend an accredited college to qualify for federal student aid, and you may have trouble transferring credits from an unaccredited school. Plus, many employers recognize degrees only from accredited institutions.

To verify a school’s accreditation status, you can search the directory on CHEA’s website or visit the school’s accreditation webpage.

Programmatic accreditation provides quality assurance in specific fields. While it is not prevalent at the certificate level for management programs, programmatic accreditation is important for more advanced academic programs in the business field.

Three organizations handle accreditation for most business degree programs: the International Accreditation Council for Business Education, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online management certificate can lead directly to an entry-level role in human resources , customer service or marketing . Alternatively, certificate grads can apply their credits toward an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in their chosen field. Many managerial roles require a master’s degree, or at least a bachelor’s degree and several years of relevant experience.

A certificate in management is a good option for students who need additional flexibility while they work or parent. It can also be a more affordable entry point to higher education than immediately jumping into a bachelor’s program at a four-year school.

Regardless of the type of credential you’re pursuing, it’s important to determine your career goals before committing to a program. A certificate in management can serve as a launching pad for either entry-level business careers or a more advanced diploma in the field.

Know Your Budget and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the 10 ranked programs in our guide range from $76 to $200. The median credit requirement for the 10 programs was 18 credits. As such, you can expect to spend somewhere between approximately $1,370 and $3,600 on your certificate. Total tuition among the best online management certificate programs averages $1,658.

To finance your education, consider applying for scholarships through your chosen community college. Many facilitate state-funded programs and offer school-specific grants and scholarships to relieve the burden of tuition for local students.

Are management certificates worth it?

Whether a management certificate is worthwhile for you depends on your individual goals and circumstances. If you want to pursue an entry-level career or just want to get your feet wet in the field, a certificate in management may be worth it. Likewise, a management certificate can supplement education in a different field if you’re aiming to move into a managerial role.

What is a management certificate program?

A management certificate is a non-degree academic program that can require between nine and 23 credits. Students take introductory courses in areas like management, leadership, team-building, problem-solving and computer literacy.

What is the best management course to take?

The best management course depends on your career goals. Still, if you want to learn management, it makes sense to take courses in management, leadership, human resources and related business subjects.

What is the easiest management degree?

An associate degree in management is the shortest degree available in the field, and many community colleges have low barriers to entry. An online certificate program at a community college often consists of introductory courses for this degree, allowing you to transfer into an associate program in business at the same school once you graduate.

“One of my biggest takeaways in that the way I approach my team is very different. I had always looked at leadership as a characteristic of who you are and never looked at it as an activity. It is not so much about who I am, but it’s about how I build that capacity in other people, so they can take the risk to take action.”

Thea Stovell, Superintendent, Randolph Public Schools

“The Certificate in School Management and Leadership is a must for all leaders. The course uses short video clips and actionable research that is easy to relate to your own school and work. The course helps you to reflect on the changes needed at your school and how to proceed with the changes to ensure an equitable education for all students.”

Erika Tonello, Assistant Principal, District School Board of Pasco County

“The cohort based learning of CSML has been instrumental to my growth and development. I have cherished learning from peers whose settings and philosophies of education are so different from my own, as well as those in schools and communities with similarities to mine. The combination pushed me to rethink approaches we currently use in our school, while simultaneously opening my eyes to radically new ways of addressing our challenges.”

Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, Head of School, Krieger Schechter Day School

“The most significant improvement that has resulted from my work in the CSML is the total comprehension of what it takes to be a true leader; the running of a business has many parts, its ripeness, its adaptive challenges, but more importantly, that leadership is a practice, and authority does not always have to lead.”

Kristine Douglas, Head of School, Ellington Preparatory Academy of Arts and Sciences Charter School

“Harvard's "Leading Change: A CSML Course," served as a wonderful form of professional development. While enrolled, I eagerly anticipated each module as the readings, videos and peer-interaction served as an excellent springboard for critical thought, reflection and growth.”

Best Online Courses for Management and Leadership

Confident smiling bearded businessman sitting leaning on desk in office

Online courses for managers allow you to continue to advance your career even when you’re already working a full-time job. These courses cover everything from communication best practices and building an ideal workplace culture to creating and inspiring strong teams.

Talented managers are in high demand, and there are plenty of online courses to help you start or strengthen your career, but knowing how to find the right program for you can be challenging. We’ve highlighted five excellent online classes for management below that will immerse you in key management concepts and areas, equipping you with essential knowledge and skills for your career.

Benefits of Enrolling in a Leadership and Management Training Course

If you’re already working in a management or leadership position, it can be difficult to find time to attend an in-person course. That’s why taking management classes online is an ideal solution. It’s much easier to fit online courses into your schedule than it is to attend in-person courses. Online courses also give you a choice of any school, regardless of its location, rather than limiting you to only programs within your proximity. Plus, since online training courses often feature flexible schedules, you can progress through the course at your own pace and easily fit your education around your career and personal obligations.

But online training courses offer other important benefits, too. As you complete the course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your role as a manager and how you can affect the entire business or organization. Nearly any course will focus on essential elements of change management , which is particularly valuable as a company grows and evolves. These courses deliver specialized education that can enhance what you’ve already learned from a degree or work experience.

Additionally, programs will help you to develop essential skills, like communication and decision-making skills , that will ultimately make you a better, more effective manager. As a result, these online courses benefit both leaders and their businesses.

New Survey Shows How Nation’s Failure To Invest In Construction Education & Training Programs Makes It Hard For Firms To Build

94 Percent of Construction Firms Report Having a Hard Time Finding Workers to Hire, Undermining Efforts to Build Infrastructure & Other Projects As Industry Calls for Better Federal Workforce Policies

The nation’s failure to invest in construction workforce education and training programs is having a real, measurable impact on the country’s ability to build infrastructure and other construction projects, according to the results of a workforce survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and Arcoro, the leading HR technology company supporting the construction industry . Noting that 94 percent of contractors report they are having a hard time filling open positions, construction officials called on federal leaders to adopt better workforce policies.

“The most likely path to addressing construction workforce shortages is for the federal government to adopt better workforce policies,” said Jeff Shoaf, the association’s chief executive officer, during a virtual media briefing to release the results. “Federal officials need to support, instead of undermine, our national infrastructure and economic development policies.”

The association noted that 94 percent of construction firms nationwide report they have open positions they are trying to fill. Among those firms, 94 percent are having trouble filling at least some of those positions – particularly among the craft workforce that performs the bulk of onsite construction work. Association officials noted that nearly one-in-three contractors (28 percent) reports having at least 11 unfilled craft positions as of June 30.

Workforce shortages are having an impact on contractors’ ability to build projects, according to the survey. Fifty-four percent of contractors reported experiencing project delays because of workforce shortages. Labor shortages are more likely to be the cause of project delays than other causes, like supply chain challenges and shipping delays, the survey found.

One reason it is so difficult to find people is because federal officials have failed to properly invest in construction workforce training and education. Shoaf noted that a report the association recently released in partnership with the Progressive Policy Institute found that federal officials invest four times as much each year encouraging students to earn four-year degrees than they do supporting workforce development programs for fields like construction.

Construction officials noted that 62 percent of respondents reported that available candidates were not qualified to work in the industry because they lack required skills or certificates. Forty-three percent report that employees lack required documentation like a driver’s license, work permit or clean background check. And half of firms report that new hires fail to show up or quit shortly after starting.

Contractors are taking steps to overcome labor shortages, according to the survey. Ninety-one percent of firms report they increased base pay rates for hourly construction positions during the past year. In addition, 57 percent of firms report they have added online strategies to try to recruit younger workers. Fifty-one percent have engaged with career-building programs like high schools or training facilities.

Contractors are also increasing investments in their internal training to address candidates’ lack of hard and soft skills. Forty-two percent of firms reported they have initiated or increased spending on training and professional development programs to address workforce shortages. And one-in-four firms (26 percent) report they have increased their use of learning programs with strong online and/or video components.

The survey also shows that construction firms are using human resources technology to address workforce challenges. One-in-four firms report they are using technology to deliver training programs for workers, association officials noted. Meanwhile, 34 percent of respondents noted they have partnered with a third-party firm to establish training courses and professional development.

“As a technology company focused on providing solutions designed for contractors to address workforce challenges, the shortage of qualified employees in the industry is something we understand first-hand from our customers,” says Carrie Gardenhire, Director of Association Partnerships at Arcoro. “From the survey results, we see additional opportunities for contractors to leverage HR technology to make their recruiting, employee development and retention efforts more efficient and impactful.”

Shoaf noted that the association is taking a range of steps to help the industry cope with labor shortages. AGC has partnered with its chapters to run more than a dozen targeted digital advertising campaigns designed to reach and recruit new workers. The association has created recruiting resources for member firms and its chapters. And it regularly hosts virtual and in-person gatherings to share workforce development success stories.

In addition, AGC chapters run a host of training and recruitment programs. They have partnered with local school districts to create new construction academies. They have created pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship programs. They have built and supported networks of career and technical education teachers. And they host dozens of construction career fairs each year, among many other workforce efforts.

But association officials said more must be done to address construction workforce shortages. They called on Congress and the White House to significantly boost funding for construction-focused education and training programs. They urged Congress to allocate more funds for workforce training as part of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and to boost funding for in-school construction programs as part of the Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act.

“ Considering all that this industry and our association are doing to prepare, recruit and retain new workers, we are confident that better federal workforce policies will make a meaningful and lasting difference for the better when it comes the construction workforce,” Shoaf added.

The association and Arcoro conducted the Workforce Survey in late July and early August. Nearly 1,500 firms completed the survey from a broad cross-section of the construction industry, including union and open shop firms of all sizes. The 2024 Workforce Survey is the association’s 12 th annual workforce-related survey.

5 Key Benefits of Enrolling in a Management Training Course

Business woman presenting to colleagues

  • 16 Jan 2020

No matter your experience level, it’s important to continuously learn and develop new skills . As you advance in your career, you need to work efficiently with colleagues, gain deep expertise within your industry, keep up with emerging technologies and, eventually, manage others.

While you'll naturally develop most of these skills over the course of your career, it's that final point—management—which can be the trickiest to develop. After all, if you're never given the opportunity to oversee others, how can you gauge your effectiveness as a manager?

It’s for this reason that many aspiring or newly appointed managers often wonder whether enrolling in a management training course could be beneficial to their careers.

Here are five major reasons why management training programs can benefit your personal and professional goals.

Access your free e-book today.

Why Is Management Training Important?

Whether you’re an aspiring, new, or seasoned manager, management training programs can equip you with the skills to influence decision-making, create efficient processes, and empower your team and organization to be at their best.

Business managers who seek out opportunities to effectively develop their skills can increase overall employee satisfaction by creating a business environment in which all team members are aligned on a common goal. Intentional alignment on business objectives can boost an organization’s productivity.

You can also gain the skills necessary for setting clear expectations, which can increase employee motivation as they’re able to successfully execute their tasks.

Business leaders who prioritize their own development by enrolling in management training courses return to their organizations with a clear vision of how to integrate effective practices into their daily work. While these courses are an investment of both time and money, they can make you a better manager and increase the likelihood of future business growth.

Benefits of Enrolling in a Management Training Course

1. improved communication skills.

Clear communication is key to your success, but not every person communicates the same way. Being unable to adapt to and manage multiple communication styles can lead to lower employee engagement and poor team performance.

In management training, you can learn how to communicate in ways that enable you to influence multiple audiences within your organization—from your team members to key decision-makers. Similarly, you can acquire important communication tactics that empower your employees to work toward shared goals.

2. Personalized Feedback and Self-Evaluation

Receiving personalized feedback from your superiors can be one of the most valuable career development opportunities, helping you understand your strengths, weaknesses, and greatest opportunities for growth. Yet, when received on the job, these evaluations can be tainted by the relationships you already have with your colleagues.

A high-quality management training course should include personalized feedback from other professionals who are not biased by a preexisting relationship. Their only concern is helping you improve your abilities as a manager. The course should teach you how to evaluate yourself, practice self-reflection, and evaluate your progress—both in class and in the office, ensuring you keep your skills sharp.

3. Deeper Understanding of the Role of a Manager

A manager’s primary goal is to be an effective implementer—someone who coordinates the actions of others to accomplish organizational goals and objectives. Managers perform a wide array of daily tasks, but their fundamental function is to get things done with and through others.

An aspect of management that’s sometimes underestimated is the ability to mentor and guide employees. Although 76 percent of people think having managerial mentors in the workplace is important, only 37 percent of professionals report having one, which means continuing your management education is more important than ever.

A course can help you better understand the ins and outs of a successful manager’s role whether or not you have a mentor in the workplace, enabling you to become a better advisor to others.

4. Improved Understanding of Change Management

Virtually every company is guaranteed to go through organizational transitions over the course of its existence. Whether that change is as small as hiring a new employee or as large as an acquisition, successful leaders need the ability to initiate, adapt to, and manage change .

“Managers must develop skills in designing, directing, and shaping change processes,” said Harvard Business School Professor David Garvin in the online course Management Essentials . “Change is not an event, but a process.”

A managerial course can help you develop the skills needed to oversee a transition by breaking down the components of an organizational change process. It can also equip you with the know-how to tackle questions around how a company can get from point A to point B, what actions employees must take during transitions, and how to ensure those actions are executed.

5. Improved Decision-Making Skills

Managers must be able to make decisions effectively and efficiently. To succeed, you need to learn about the decision-making process—ranging from what aspects constitute a “good” decision, to understanding how social, political, and emotional factors play a key role in the process.

In a course, you can learn how to recognize and avoid key pitfalls that undermine successful decision-making processes. You can also improve both individual and group decision-making and inspire a mindset of inquiry within your organization.

Who Will Benefit from Management Training?

Anyone can benefit from management training, no matter their experience level. Here’s how taking a leadership course can arm you with the expertise needed throughout your career trajectory.

  • Aspiring Managers: If you're aspiring to further your career, prepare for the future by learning proper management strategies and frameworks and build your skill set.
  • Newly Appointed Managers: Whether you’re managing people, products, or projects, a course can help you acquire the skills necessary to succeed from day one.
  • Seasoned Managers: As an experienced manager, you can still hone your leadership expertise by applying insights from expert faculty and knowledgeable practitioners trained in managerial processes.

Choosing the Right Training Program

If you’ve decided that enrolling in a management training course makes sense for your personal and career goals, your next step is to choose the program which will best complement your skills and address your weaknesses.

Conduct an honest self-evaluation and determine where you stand to most improve your skills, and then seek a course that will allow you to specifically target that area for improvement. For example, you might want to look for a program focused on change management.

Participating in management training can advance your career by equipping you with the knowledge to make effective decisions, influence change around you, and manage and mentor your colleagues—making you a better employee and manager, and enabling you to overcome any challenges that arise during your tenure.
