Finally, in order to verify the analyzed results, a logistic regression model was prepared where, based on personality traits, an attempt was made to classify the respondents into the group of sports champions and other athletes.
In the first step, all personality traits were introduced as predictors of the athletes’ level. The null model was characterized by 90.6% correct classifications, which results from the ratio of the number of other athletes to all research subjects. The classification threshold, based on the ROC analysis, was set to 0.7. The model with five predictors was statistically significant χ 2 (5) = 425.68; p < 0.001, and Nagelkerke’s pseudo-R 2 was 0.62, which means that the proposed model explains about 62% of the variance. The Hosmer–Lemeshow goodness of fit test was statistically insignificant χ 2 (8) = 7.49; p = 0.485. The entire model correctly classified 94.3% of the observations. The analysis of the significance of the predictors in the discussed model showed that only neuroticism significantly predicted belonging to the champions group or to the other athletes group. For this reason, another model was created in which neuroticism was the only predictor. The second model was statistically significant χ 2 (1) = 423.02; p < 0.001, and Nagelkerke’s pseudo-R 2 was 0.62. The goodness of fit test was again statistically insignificant χ 2 (7) = 13.44; p = 0.062. The overall percentage of correct classifications was also 94.3%. Pseudo-R 2 for one personality variable of logistic regression was 62% of the variance as other athletes are very different from the champions in their level of neuroticism. In the t -test analysis, the effect size was d = 1.81, which is a very high result. It is rarely seen, but apparently the two groups are quite different in this respect. The other personality measures did not contribute to the percentage of explained variance. Therefore, the second model, with the only predictor being the neuroticism measure, turned out to be as good as the model with five predictors. This means that neuroticism was the key personality trait that predicted the level of achievement among the tested athletes. A relationship was established in the developed model: the lower the level of neuroticism, the greater the probability of being classified as a sports champion. The relationship is presented in Table 2 .

The analyses showed statistically significant differences in all personality dimensions in the Big Five five-factor approach; namely: sports champions were characterized by a lower level of neuroticism and a higher level of extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness than other athletes. This personality profile of sports champions confirmed earlier research reports [ 16 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 26 ], and at the same time negated the research of Mirzaei and colleagues [ 11 ], which suggested that only high conscientiousness correlated with sports results.
Whether the personality determinants of success in sport were formed solely in the course of many years of sports career, or already at the beginning of sports practice still remains an open question. Therefore, the opinion of respected scientists such as Allen [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ], or Vealey [ 27 ] cannot be ruled out. Factors disrupting or supporting the development of a young athlete are created by his immediate environment. This, in turn, is expressed in self-esteem, which has a significant impact on the shaping of the personality and competences of talented players.
The logistic regression model analyzed the obtained results. On the basis of the five-factor personality model, attempts were made to classify the researched population into the group of sports champions or the other athletes group. The research results have shown that neuroticism was an important personality trait, allowing to classify athletes according to their level of sports achievements; the lower the level of neuroticism, the greater the probability of being classified as a sports champion. The numerous relationships found in the research between personality dimensions and athletes in various randomizations allow us to conclude that the results concerning neuroticism as a determinant of personality success in sport are highly probable and may be universal. The only predictor of sports results, and thus a personality determinant of success in sports, in terms of the Big Five, was neuroticism.
The dimension of neuroticism reflects emotionality in terms of experiencing negative emotions, i.e., emotional adaptation in relation to emotional imbalance. The sports champions were distinguished by very low neuroticism, thus it can be assumed that they were emotionally stable, calm, relaxed, and able to deal with stress without experiencing anxiety, tension, and irritation; whereas other athletes had a higher level of neuroticism compared to the champions. This means that their negative emotions influenced their adaptation to the environment. Neurotic people were prone to irrational ideas, and relatively inadequate to control their drives and cope with stress. This is due to the general excitability of the vegetative system. The reactions are too great in relation to the strength of the acting stimuli. Emotionally unstable competitors experience very strong pre-start conditions and can collapse in the face of important competitions. It can be expected that in difficult situations, their efficiency of perception, speed and accuracy of sensorimotor responses, efficiency of thinking processes, and the quality and effectiveness of action will deteriorate significantly. The dimension of neuroticism includes six formally distinguished components: anxiety, aggressive hostility, depression, impulsiveness, hypersensitivity, and excessive self-criticism. Therefore, champions may be distinguished from other sportsmen by low level of anxiety, which has a positive effect on motivation [ 6 ]; low aggressive hostility that triggers the state of start readiness, which translates into the control of arousal before and during the competition, and bravery understood as fighting until the very end [ 28 ]; low depressiveness that indicates an optimistic mood and a positive attitude [ 29 ]; low impulsiveness that crystallizes emotion control [ 30 ]; low hypersensitivity that gives good concentration of attention and the need for strong sensory impressions, as well as the ability to cope with failure and experience success [ 31 ]; and finally, low self-criticism that determines self-confidence and self-efficacy [ 32 ].
Taking the above into consideration, the greatest cognitive value of this paper is to prove that neuroticism is an important personality condition for success in sport. Therefore, one should adopt broad perspectives of analyses of neuroticism components as mental determinants of sports success. As there is no data regarding whether social factors influence the personality of the surveyed sportsmen, one should also pay attention to the role of the social environment of sportsmen. This knowledge may be useful in the detection and proper development of sports talents, modernization of sports training and better adaptation of athletes to the environment after the end of their career. It is also important to notice that sports activities shape the personality of players [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 33 ]. Therefore, the differences in personality shown in this study can be seen as a consequence of the athletes’ success, rather than as a reason for athletes’ success, based on their age between 20 and 29. Sports activity could be seen as a self-confidence generator. Under the influence of trainings, adepts start to improve in a given discipline, and this moderates their personalities. Athletes become convinced that they are the authors of their own fate and that they create their own lives. This is why the successes achieved by the players build strong personalities of athletes.
The obtained research results also provide a new argument about the health aspects of sports training (in the context of health through rational, long-term sports training) in personality development. There are few empirical studies on the relationship of motor, technical and tactical training, and the results of personality tests. Hence, the possibilities of a broader interpretation of research results from an interdisciplinary perspective are limited.
At this point, the strengths and limitations of the conducted cognitive experiment should be equally noted. The research sample was homogeneous in terms of ethnicity, gender, and the age range of 20–29 years. Athletes of other nationalities, women, and other age groups were not included. The research was conducted on a large group of respondents from sports disciplines popular in Poland. However, it was not possible to examine athletes from all sports disciplines trained in Poland. The group of champions included Polish athletes with international sports successes. Therefore, the obtained research results can only be applied to a specific population of athletes. Thus, the following conclusion can be drawn: a low level of neuroticism is a personality determinant of success in sport among Polish male athletes between the ages of 20 and 29. However, one must bear in mind that the personality determinants of success in sport in various disciplines are distinct. This is due to the specificity of sports competition in martial arts [ 21 ], individual [ 22 ], and team [ 23 ] sports, as well as different psychological requirements they place on competitors [ 1 , 33 ].
However, the general personality profile of athletes in terms of the Big Five is low neuroticism, high extraversion and conscientiousness, average openness to experience and agreeableness [ 4 , 17 ]. In comparison with the reports by Allen [ 20 ], it was noticed that low neuroticism also has a significant role in the personality differentiation of champions from the rest of the athletes. It has been proven that a low level of neuroticism may be a personality determinant of sport success among Polish athletes between the ages of 20 and 29, and its intensity depends on the sports discipline. It is therefore suggested that the coaches analyze the personality conditions of the players for sports competition, as these have a significant impact on the sports results. Hence, in sports theory, one should adopt broad perspectives of personality component analyzes as mental determinants of sports success.
There are differences between champions and other athletes in all personality dimensions in terms of the Big Five. Sports champions were characterized by a lower level of neuroticism and a higher level of extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness in relation to other athletes. Analysis of the obtained data by the logistic regression model proved that only neuroticism was an important personality determinant predicting the level of achievement among the studied athletes: the lower the level of neuroticism, the greater the probability of classifying the athlete to the champion group. Champions are presumably balanced and usually resistant to stress. They are not very sensitive to various stressors. They have better attention span, and they do not panic in difficult situations. Their well-being is stable, and their emotional reactions are adequate to the stimuli. Therefore, sports development of athletes without the knowledge of the specific features and personality structure of various sports representatives may be an artificial and ineffective activity. It remains an open question whether the personalities of the champions were shaped only in the course of many years of their sports career, or whether they already distinguished champions at the beginning of their sports practice. Therefore, based on the result of the research, it can be argued that personality differences should be seen as a consequence of the athletes’ success, rather than as a reason for the athletes’ success, based on their age between 20 and 29.

Some of the most successful people globally, well-known not just in their fields, but admired by everyone, are sportspersons. From Sachin Tendulkar to Sania Mirza, India itself has an abundance of sportspersons for people to look up to and feel inspired by. In the last few decades, the nation has placed a considerable emphasis on children taking sports up as professional careers, teaching people about the importance of sports in the personality development of students . Today, sports have become an intrinsic part of our lives – from an academic and a professional perspective. This subject forms a strong focus in schools and colleges, allowing students to compete with and against each other and causing sports and education to go hand in hand.
Playing sports is a lot more than just technique and scoring – it involves wholesome personality development. Ever wondered how physical activity can contribute towards building soft skills, assist in character development and help build a childâs overall personality? Letâs take a look at all the benefits and importance of sports in respect of a studentâs personality development –
Playing a sport regularly can help keep the body active, irrespective of a personâs age. Whether you choose cricket, badminton, tennis, or any other sport, it allows you to engage in physical motion. This has a number of benefits – from helping control weight and building muscles to improving agility and mental reflexes, and coordination. Playing sports allows the body to become more aware and facilitates better psychological and physical balance.
Playing a sport and excelling at it requires a good amount of discipline. By teaching children a sport and allowing them to pursue it, you can help a child focus and set their mind to achieve certain goals. If a child is extremely passionate about a sport, they will learn how to commit themselves, exert self-control and learn the art of being determined to accomplish what they set their mind to. These characteristics go a long way in not just helping children excel at sports but setting goals in life.
When sports are played in teams, it encourages children to work together, solve problems and come up with solutions to achieve goals. Team sports help children understand how important each memberâs role in the team is and how a well-working team can holistically contribute to a final win. Most sports, even the ones that are played individually, involve a lot of camaraderies and help children increase their social skills towards one another.
Aside from developing skills and characteristics within children internally, playing sports also has an external behavioural influence on children. When playing with others, children come across all kinds of traits they can pick up – be it a technique, skill, or behavioural trait, children are impressionable. Thus, it is important to have proper mentoring and coaching where such mentors can shape a childâs mind up with positive behavioural influences.
Playing sports helps in developing strength, both internally and externally. While constant exercise helps in becoming physically fit, children also become strong mentally as they realize how to tackle victories and defeats with equal sportsmanship. This helps them build life skills such as taking things in their stride, motivating themselves to do even better, as well as not back down before they reach their goal.
Playing sports allows children to exhibit leadership skills and qualities. By leading or co-leading a team, they understand how to delegate functions, keep their head in the game, motivate their team members to win, and support playing functions. It teaches children the art of being a leader.
Being physically active allows the mind to be lifted and feel positive, thus helping in destressing. When the body is indulging in physical activity, the mind has an outlet for releasing negative thoughts. Sporting activities enable the body to produce and release endorphins, or happy hormones, which help in combating stress and negativity.
At The Sports School , we truly believe that children learn to benefit a lot from sports and education blended together optimally. Thus, we provide students with focused training and mentoring to help them hone their skills. We understand that excelling at a sport requires a lot more than just technique and skill – it also requires wholesome personality development. We have a host of mentors and coaches that help children train both physically and mentally so that they are fit and ready to take on the world.
At The Sports School, our goal is to have our students develop a holistic personality and become great leaders tomorrow – both on the field and off it.

Fellow breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie says she won her qualification "fair and square" last year, but African American man Malik Dixon has criticised the Olympic body for letting her in.
Breaking will not be an event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games â a decision made before Raygun's performance.
The 2024 Paris Olympics marked breaking's debut as a sport at the global event, with 36-year-old lecturer and breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn representing Australia for the first time.
Having failed to win a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, Raygun quickly became a viral sensation.
The question on many people's minds now is: How did she even qualify?
Lucas Marie is a breaker who has competed, performed, taught and judged breaking competitions over the past 25 years. He's also an anthropologist who recently co-authored an article with Gunn.
He says the answer to that question is simple.

"There was an Oceania qualifier in which any B-boy or B-girl from Australia [or] New Zealand could enter, and that was in Sydney in October 2023," he told ABC News.
"And leading up to that, there were a lot of other events in which breakers were competing.
"She won those battles fair and square and won the qualification in Sydney.
"And it wasn't really a surprise to anyone.Â
"She's been fairly consistent, winning or coming second or third at a lot of breaking events in Australia for the last five to 10 years."
Marie said there was nothing out of the ordinary about Raygun's performance.
"It's not like gymnastics where there's this kind of agreed-upon standard," he said.
"It's always had a rawness to it. It's always had an improvisational kind of quality. And I think looking different and trying different stuff has always been celebrated.
"And I think Raygun, in a way, was just expressing a core kind of hip hop trait in a way a lot of breakers do."
He described her efforts as bold.
"I thought â and this is how I judge a lot of breaking events â I thought, 'Oh, she's making some really interesting choices to mimic Australian animals.' And you can kind of see the choices that she's making in the moment."
Team Australia chef de mission Anna Meares insisted after Raygun's performance that she was the best breaker the country had to offer. But is this true?

"It's sometimes just who's performing better on the day," Marie said.
"And at the qualification event in which she won, and other events in which she's won, she performed better on that day and won the ticket.
"That doesn't mean she's the best. It doesn't really work like that.
"I think she's a great breaker. She won the qualification. She's won other events in the past, and she was a good representative for Australia at that competition."
Asked whether there were B-girls in Perth, regional Victoria or rural Brisbane who might have qualified but could not afford to travel to Sydney for the tryouts, Marie agreed this was possible.
"Of course, there's breakers all over the country that maybe should have been in that event, but they weren't."
Breaking will not carry over to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a decision made before Raygun's battle.
Marie described this as sad.
"Maybe, based on the ratings, they'll reassess that and maybe allocate some medals to breaking," he said.
"I really hope that's the case, and I hope that for other breakers who want to compete in it as a dance sport."
Marie said that at the end of the day people should remember they were dealing with a human.
"As a friend of Rachael's, there's a human being who's getting a lot of negative attention," he said.
"I think people kind of miss that sometimes and forget the human aspect of all this."
Malik Dixon is an African American who has been living in Australia for more than a decade and is a Sydney University graduate.
He said Raygun made a total "mockery" out of breaking at the Olympics.
Malik Dixon says too many people feel entitled to African American culture. ( Supplied )
"She was dressed like a member of the cricket team or an Australian PE teacher, and from that point it just seemed like satire," Mr Dixon told ABC News.
"It just looked like somebody who was toying with the culture and didn't know how culturally significant it was being the first time in the Olympics and just how important it was to people who really cherish hip hop and one of the elements of hip hop, which is breakdancing.
"It made me think, was Borat her breakdancing coach?"
Mr Dixon said too many people felt entitled to African American culture.
"The African American space has been one where we've shared our community so much and without any restraints, any barriers, roadblocks, obstacles, any gatekeepers, that essentially what should have been African American cultural capital is just shared, which is cool," he said.Â
"We like to share, right?Â
"We shared 400 years of free labour.
"To see Rachael in her attempt to be a part of the culture just be grossly underwhelming made it seem like she didn't take it seriously."
Mr Dixon criticised the body that qualified Raygun, saying she devalued breaking with her performance.
"Whatever governing body nominated her as Australia's entrant into the Olympics either did not understand the assignment or didn't really believe in the integrity or significance of breakdancing, because if they did they would just say, rather than disrespect the culture, we're just not ready to send an applicant this year."
He said Raygun was extremely audacious and not self-aware.
"You've got to know your role, know your position, know your limitation," he said.Â
"And I think that part of privilege is saying that there are no limits to what I can do.Â
"Part of privilege is having the authority to say that there are no limits and there are no requirements, there are no prerequisites to what I can do."
Raygun's degrees do not hold much water with Mr Dixon.
"Due to consumerism, this Foundational Black American product, which is hip hop, is global," he said.
"And even people who have no connection to any African Americans or any local or regional things that come out in these songs, they have become a part of the whole experience now.
"If I came in and said that I was an authority on Greek music and I was going against the grain of what the mainstream Greek musicians thought, or the school of thought, and I've said that I was the authority, people would check me on that.
"If I had a PhD in sprinting, does that qualify me to go against Noah Lyles? No, it doesn't."
He also doubts Raygun was the best breaker Australia had to offer.
"[There's] got to be somebody out here that's better than that! The kangaroo! The sprinkler! She did the sprinkler out there, man!" he said.
Should we lighten up? Mr Dixon does not believe so.
"Larrikinism is used as a get-out-of-jail-free card and to escape responsibility of how words or actions impact a hurt person," he said.
"But when the majority culture is offended, there's no playing around.
"This is a part of my culture, and I don't think Australians are in a place to tell me how I should feel about breakdancing being mocked on an international stage.
"People who don't have any or limited access to black people or hip hop culture now may see Rachael and her buffoonery as a representation of hip hop and black culture.
"People who were already side-eyeing breakdancing as an Olympic sport, Rachael Gunn has put the nail in that coffin.
"This might be the most viral clip of the whole Olympics. From a comedy standpoint, she's got it, but from an Olympics perspective, its regressive."

Following 16 spectacular and memorable days of Olympic competition, the baton has passed to LA28 after a star-studded Closing Ceremony at the Stade de France.
But while the world eagerly anticipates the next summer Games in the City of Angels, letâs take a look back at some of the highlights from the City of Light.
From Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred 's sensational 100m finals to Leon Marchand , Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh ripping it up in the pool, here are some of the highlights of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .
Simone Biles ' success at Paris 2024 marked the completion of one of the greatest bounce-backs in Olympic history . The 27-year-old American, who withdrew from Tokyo 2020 , returned to win three more golds and one silver in Paris. She led the American women to the team title at the outset of the artistic gymnastics competition, and followed with golds in the all-around and the vault, with her silver coming in the floor exercise.
It capped off a career of seven Olympic golds, two silvers and two bronzes over three Olympics Games, going back to Rio 2016 . Her celebrated return was the top ticket for celebrity spectators, with Biles delivering an inspiring performance with a message of redemption that went beyond sport.
Gold medallist Katie Ledecky of the United States with her gold medal after winning the women's 1500m freestyle final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Paris La Defense Arena on 31 July 2024.
These Games further solidified the legend of Team USAâs Katie Ledecky , swimming in her fourth Olympics. The 27-year-old swimming icon added four more medals at Paris 2024 â two golds, one silver and one bronze, a performance highlighted by her fourth consecutive gold medal in the 800m freestyle, a feat only matched by Michael Phelps .
The 17-year-old Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh also had weighty expectations on her coming into Paris 2024 , and she not only met them but exceeded them, winning four Olympic medals â three gold and one silver. McIntosh earned gold in the 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly and 200m IM, with silver in the 400m freestyle. McIntosh became the first Canadian to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.
Noah Lyles of Team USA crosses the line to win the men's 100m final at Paris 2024
The showmanship, the confidence, the claims â Team USAâs Noah Lyles backed it all up on 4 August as the menâs 100m sprint took centre stage for the night's final event at the Stade de France . The orchestrated buildup, complete with lasers, led to a show that delivered on every promise.
The fastest men in the world lined up... and in a flash, it was over, with a dramatic photo finish as Lyles caught Jamaicaâs Kishane Thompson at the finish line. Lyles took the gold with a personal best time of 9.784 seconds, ahead of Thompsonâs 9.789. âGoodness gracious, I'm incredible," said Lyles â the newly minted Olympic gold medallist and the fastest man in the world.
Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain won the women's 800m gold medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Team GB's Keely Hodgkinson would not settle for silver this time. The 22-year-old Hodgkinson, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, snapped to setting the pace early. The pre-race favourite shrugged off any nerves to hold off an outside attack from Kenyaâs Mary Moraa , then found that top gear in the final straight to pull away and charge to victory at a time of 1:56.72.
Hodges was a textbook-perfect race â no notes â for her maiden Olympic title.
French swimming sensation LĂŠon Marchand was also cool out of the pool at Paris 2024, as he celebrated with fans at Champions Park, near the iconic Eiffel Tower, on 6 August 2024.
The pressure was on for the 22-year-old swimming sensation Leon Marchand heading into Paris 2024 . Would he rise to the occasion for his home country or sink under the pressure? And wow, did he rise, kick, pull and glide his way to four Olympic individual gold medals, breaking Michael Phelps's 400m IM and 200m IM records and finishing with a bronze in the menâs 4 x 100m medley relay.
As the medals piled up, so did the Marchand frenzy. The entire country went along for the ride, with deafening cheering, and not just at the Paris La Defense Arena venue. Across France, in cafĂŠs and city centres, the chants of âLeon, Leon, Leonâ rang out. Viva Marchand!
Gold medallist Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis of Sweden set a new world record in the men's pole vault at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on 5 August 2024.
The stage was set for greatness in the Stade de France , with the chant of âMondo, Mondo, Mondo!â ringing across the stadium. The Swede, Armand âMondoâ Duplantis , did what he does best, breaking the Olympic record with a jump of 6.10m to defend his gold medal and then raising the bar higher to 6.25m.
The stadium watched in silence as Mondo began his ran up. He flew over the bar, setting a new world record height. His feat was met with roars of approval from fans who had witnessed the greatest jump â and jumper â in history.
Pauline Ferrand PrĂŠvot of France celebrates winning gold in the women's mountain bike cross-country final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on 28 July 2024 in Elancourt, France.
It was the dominant Frenchwoman Pauline Ferrand-PrĂŠvot and the confident Brit Tom Pidcock â both of them reigning XC mountain bike world champions and, in Pidcock's case, the reigning Olympic champion â who had hearts soaring and racing in the mountain bike finals.
Ferrand-PrĂŠvot, in her final Olympic mountain bike cross-country competition , pedaled her way to a storybook ending, winning an Olympic gold medal in a perfect finale to her dominant mountain biking career. Moreover, she got to do it at home in France â chefâs kiss.
Pidcockâs bid to defend his Olympic gold medal culminated with an audacious final lap against France's Victor Koretzky , looking for his own storybook ending at home. Koretzky was denied by Pidcock, who overcame a tire puncture to make up a 34-second deficit, catching up to the Frenchman and then making a harrowing pass to take the lead and win in a finish that many fans and viewers have yet to recover from.
Gold medallist Yuto Horigome of Japan, flanked by American silver medallist Jagger Eaton on the left and bronze medallist Nyjah Huston on the right at the men's street finals in Paris, France.
It came down to the final three in what is being called the greatest menâs skateboard final of all time. The defining moment belonged to three titans of the street contest scene: the defending gold medallist from Japan in Yuto Horigome , the USAâs Nyjah Huston â the 15-time X Games champion looking to cap his career with the elusive Olympic gold medal â and the unwavering fellow American competitor Jagger Eaton .
The contest came down to the trio battling in the final trick section, each one-upping the other, landing the heaviest of tricks under the most intense pressure. Minds were blown, Tony Hawk was speechless and NBC commentator Ryan Sheckler called it "the gnarliest final of competitive skateboarding Iâve ever seenâ as Horigome defended his gold ahead of Eaton and Huston.
Sha'Carri Richardson crosses the finish line to win the women's 4x100m relay gold for Team USA
The Americans were heavy pre-race favourites as the reigning world champions in the womenâs 4x100, but the win was not a given. At the race's midpoint, the US, with Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry on the first and second legs, were in third.
But Paris 2024 200m champion Gabby Thomas began gaining ground in the third leg, passing the baton to the anchor leg and 100m silver medallist Sha'Carri Richardson , who hit top form, finding another gear to speed past rivals Great Britain and Germany, a sideways look before she burst across the finish line to defend the gold medal for Team USA in 41.78 seconds, a season's best.
Gabriel Medina in a barrel during day three at Teahupo'o on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia, where the surfing events for Paris 2024 were held.
A highlight that was not a final medal round took place thousands of kilometres away in Tahiti, where the Olympic surfers woke to a massive swell: Teahupoâo had turned on. The menâs Round 3, on Monday June 29 , saw massive, powerful barrels roll in, with the worldâs best surfers pulling in deep and emerging with hands in the air. It was a day that transcended sport and delivered something genuinely soul-stirring.
The competition saw the highest scores of the Olympic Games, with Brazilâs Gabriel Medina , the eventual bronze medallist, earning a 9.90, exiting the wave with the fly-away kickout seen around the world. The day of competition exemplified the best surfing and the very best of the incredible Teahupoâo wave.
A'ja Wilson of the United States passes the ball while being defended by Marieme Badiane of France during their women's gold medal final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Bercy Arena on 11 August 2024.
And you couldnât have scripted it better: USA vs. Olympic host nation France in both menâs and womenâs basketball finals, with both contests decided in the gripping final minutes.
The all-star USA menâs team brought it home 98-87 in the gold medal final, led by Steph Curry in his Olympic debut shooting four of his eight three-pointers in the final minutes and scoring 24 points, while Kevin Durant and Devin Booker finishing with 15 points each and LeBron James had 14. This marked a fifth straight US gold medal in men's basketball going back to Beijing 2008 .
The womenâs final between these two nations was even tighter and more dramatic. The USAâs Aâja Wilson was everywhere on the court, scoring 21 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The game was decided in the final second as a jump shot by Franceâs Gabby Williams went in as time expired, sending the audience into raptures as the French thought the game had been tied â but Williams had just left the three-point area when she delivered that shot, and a two-point bucket wasn't enough for the hosts and the USA won by the narrowest of margins: 67-66 in a game for the ages . With that great escape, the US women had won their eighth Olympic gold medal in a row.
It all happened in the blink of an eye; Saint Luciaâs Julien Alfred burst out of the blocks ahead of the field. The three-time NCAA champion kept her lead, holding off pre-race favourite ShaâCarri Richardson to win gold in 10.72 seconds .
The win marks a momentous occasion for Saint Lucia, as it is its first Olympic medal in the Games' history.
