  • Bhagwan Bhilsa Munda, a tribal who fought the British in 1857, should be taken as an inspiration to get backward society forward.
  • There are a few people who cannot witness India's development. We need to be careful of such people. They become the face of anarchy and when that happens we have to start all over again. However, we will take the nation forward.
  • There are numerous internal and external challenges, and as we become stronger, the challenges will grow. But India will not budge.
  • We are Buddha's country, we will not wage a war. World need not worry about India's development.
  • We will leave no stone unturned to achieve the dreams of 140 crore Indians.
  • Every citizen has been tired of corruption. We have waged a war on it and I have to pay a price for it, but there is no price to pay for the nation. My fight against the corrupt will continue. I want to stop the tradition of looting the middle class.
  • Can anyone imagine that there are a few people who are supporting corruption in broad daylight. This is a major challenge.
  • We want our neighbouring countries to strive for peace.
  • We will support Bangladesh in its development.
  • The constitution is approaching 75 years. It has played a key role in maintaining law and order and democracy.
  • The citizens need to follow their constitutional duties.
  • The Supreme Court has ordered for Uniform Civil Code. The civil code we have today is communal civil code. There should be discussions on this. The law that divides the country on the basis of religion should be scrapped. We need to implement secular civil code.

  • There must be One Nation One Election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation as he delivers his 10th consecutive speech from Red Fort on the 77th Independence Day. (Hindustan Times)

PM Modi spoke on violence-hit Manipur, stating that the country was with the people of the state. He added that peace prevailed for the past few days, saying that the Central and State government will work to restore peace in Manipur.

He praised the martyrs of the country saying that there was not a single person in the history who did not wait and work towards becoming independent from the British era.

He also said that today the country had demography, democracy and diversity, adding that these three were enough to achieve every dream of the country.

Here is the full text of his speech:

My dear 140 crore family members,

The world's largest democracy and now many people are of the opinion that we are number one in the world even in terms of population. Such a huge country, 140 crore people, my brothers and sisters, my family members are celebrating the festival of independence today. I extend many best wishes to crores of people of the country, to crores of people in the country and the world who love India, who respect India, who are proud of India, on this great holy festival of independence.

My dear family members, the movement of non-cooperation under the leadership of Pujya Bapu, the movement of Satyagraha and the sacrifice of countless heroes like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, there would hardly be a person in that generation who did not contribute to the freedom of the country. Today, I respectfully bow down to all those who have contributed, sacrificed, performed penance in the country's freedom struggle and congratulate them. Today, 15th August, the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo, the great revolutionary and pioneer of spiritual life, is being completed. This year is the year of 150th birth anniversary of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. This year is also a very auspicious occasion of the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Durgavati, which the whole country is going to celebrate with great pomp. This year is also the auspicious festival of 525 years of Meerabai, the head of Bhakti Yoga. This time when we will celebrate 26 January it will be the 75th anniversary of our Republic Day. Many opportunities in many ways, many possibilities with every moment creating new inspiration, new consciousness, dreams, resolution, is to be engaged in nation building, perhaps there can be no greater opportunity than this.

My dear family members, this time natural calamity has created unimaginable distress in many parts of the country. I express my condolences to all the families who have suffered in this crisis and assure that the state and central government together will get rid of all those troubles quickly and then move ahead at a fast pace.

My dear family members, last few weeks in North-East and also in some other parts of India, but especially in Manipur, many people lost their lives, the honor of mothers and daughters was played with. However, for the past few days, there are continuous reports of peace coming in, the country is with the people of Manipur. The country should take forward the festival of peace that the people of Manipur have maintained for the last few days, and the way to a solution will emerge only through peace. The state and the central government together are trying their best to solve those problems and will continue to do so.

My dear family members, when we look at history, there are moments in history which leave their indelible mark. And its effect lasts for centuries and sometimes it seems like a very small incident in the beginning but it becomes the root of many problems. We remember that this country was invaded 1000-1200 years ago. A small king of a small state was defeated. But then it was not even known that one incident would entrap India in slavery for a thousand years. And we kept getting enslaved. What a difficult time it must have been, those thousand years.

My dear family members, the incident may be small, but it has been leaving an impact for thousands of years. But today I want to mention this because there was no time when the heroes of India did not keep the flame of freedom and the tradition of sacrifice burning. Bharat maa wished to stand up to be free from the shackles and the women of the country, the youth, the farmers, the people of the villages, the laborers, along with every Indian continues to dream of freedom. A large army was ready, consisting of those who were ready to die to get freedom. Many great men who spent their youth in jails were busy fighting for the freedom of our country and breaking the shackles of slavery.

My dear family members, rhat widespread form of public consciousness, sacrifice and austerity, that moment which instilled a new faith in the people, finally led to the country becoming independent in 1947, the countrymen saw the fulfillment of their dreams cherished after thousands of years of slavery.

Comrades, I am talking about thousand years ago because, I see that once again an opportunity has come before the country. We have entered such a period and it is our good fortune that India has such in Amritkal. This is the first year of Amritkal either we are living in youth or we have taken birth in the lap of Mother Bharati. And this period, keep my words in writing, my dear family members, what we will do in this period, the steps we will take, the sacrifices we will make, the penance we will do, Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay , will lead to decisions one after the other and the golden history of the country for the coming one thousand years is going to sprout from it. The events happening in this period are going to create its impact for the next one thousand years.

The country, which has come out of the mentality of slavery, is moving forward today with a new self-confidence. The nation is working wholeheartedly to prove the new resolutions. My mother India which was once a powerhouse of energy, but was buried in a pile of ashes, that Mother India has been awakened once again by the efforts, consciousness and energy of 140 crore countrymen. Maa Bharti has awakened and I can clearly see friends, this is the period we have experienced in the last 9-10 years. A new attraction, a new faith, a new hope has arisen all over the world towards the consciousness of India, towards the potential of India, and the world is seeing this beam of light that has risen from India as a light for itself. A new faith is being born to the world. It is our good fortune that we have some things which our forefathers have given us in inheritance and the present era has carved them.

Today we have demography, democracy, diversity. This trinity of demography, democracy and diversity has the potential to make every dream of India come true. Today, the age of countries in the whole world is declining, if it is on the decline, then India is moving energetically towards youth. It is a period of great pride that today the population under the age of 30 is the highest in India but anywhere in the world. This country, where youth is below 30 years of age, should have crores of arms, crores of brains, crores of dreams, crores of determination, brothers and sisters, and my dear family members, these desired results can be achieved.

My dear family members, such incidents change the fate of the country. This changes the destiny of the country. India, we are standing at the midway between 1000 years of slavery and 1000 years of grand India to come. We are standing on such a treaty and hence now we do not have to stop, nor do we have to live in dilemma.

My dear family members, taking pride in the lost heritage, while achieving the lost prosperity, let us once again believe that whatever we do, whatever step we take, whatever decision we make, it will last for the next 1000 years and is going to determine its direction. The youth who writes the fate of India, today I would like to say this to the youth of my country, to the sons and daughters of my country, the fortune that my youth have got today, hardly anyone has had the fortune, which you have received. And so we don't want to lose it. I have faith in the youth’s power, there is potential in the youth power and our policies and customs are also to provide more strength to that youth power.

Today my youth has given India a place in the first three startup economy systems of the world. The youth of the world is wondering regarding this power of India. Today the world is technology-driven and the coming era is going to be influenced by technology and then India's talent in technology is going to play a new role.

Comrades, recently, I went to Bali for the G-20 Summit and in Bali, the most prosperous countries of the world, their leaders, also the developed countries of the world, were eager to know about the success of India's Digital India and its nuances. Everyone used to ask this question and when I used to tell them that the wonders India has done are not limited to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, the wonders India, even the youth is doing in Tier-2, Tier-3 cities Today they are shaping the fate of my country. My youth from small places, and I say with great confidence today that this new potential of the country is visible, and that is why I say that our small cities can be smaller in size and population but the hope and aspiration, effort and impact they have are second to none, they have that potential. New apps, new solutions, technology devices. Now look at the world of sports, who are the children, the children who came out of the slums are showing might in the world of sports today. The youth of small villages, small towns, our sons and daughters are showing wonders today. Now see, there are 100 schools in my country where children are making satellites and making preparations to release them. Today thousands of tinkering labs are conceiving new scientists. Today, thousands of tinkering labs are inspiring millions of children to take up the path of science and technology.

I want to tell the youth of my country that there is no dearth of opportunities, as many opportunities as you want, this country is capable of giving you more opportunities than the sky.

Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I want to heartily congratulate the mothers, sisters and daughters of my country. Where the country has reached today, special power is being added to it, the power of my mothers and sisters. Today the country is on the path of progress, so I want to congratulate my farmer brothers and sisters. Today I bow down to the laborers of my country, my laborers, my dear family members and such crores of groups. I am congratulating him. Today, the country which is moving towards modernity, is seen with a power comparable to the world, behind this there is a huge contribution of the laborers of my country, today time says that from the ramparts of the Red Fort I congratulate him. Let me greet them and my family members, 140 crore countrymen of mine, we respect these workers, street vendors, flower-vegetable sellers. Professionals have been playing a huge role in taking my country forward, in taking my country to a new height of progress. Be it scientists, engineers, doctors, nurses, teachers, professors, universities, gurukuls, everyone is working with all their might to make the future of Mother India bright.

My dear family members, National consciousness is such a word which is liberating us from worries. And today that national consciousness is proving that India's biggest strength has been faith, India's biggest strength has been faith, our faith in people, people's faith in the government, people's faith in the country. Belief in bright future and the world also has faith in India. This belief is of our policies, of our custom. The bright future of India is due to the determined strong steps we are taking forward.

Brothers and sisters, my dear family members, it is certain that India's potential and India's possibilities are going to cross new heights of confidence and these new heights of confidence should be taken with new potential. Today, India has got the opportunity to host the G-20 Summit in the country. And for the last one year, the way many such G-20 events have been organized in every corner of India, many programs have been organized, it has made the world aware of the potential of the common man of the country. The diversity of India has been introduced. The world is watching India's diversity with wonder and because of that the attraction towards India has increased. The desire to know and understand India has arisen. In the same way you see, exports, today India's exports are increasing rapidly and I want to say that on the basis of all these parameters, the experts of the world are saying that now India is not going to stop. Any rating agency of the world would be making India proud. After the Corona period, the world has started thinking from a new angle. And I am seeing with confidence that the way a new world order took shape in the world after the Second World War, after the Second World War. I can clearly see that after Corona, a new world order, a new global order, a new geo-political equation, it is progressing very fast. All interpretations of the geopolitical equation are changing, definitions are changing. And my dear family members, you will be proud. Today, my 140 crore countrymen, your ability to shape the changing world is visible. You are standing at a turning point.

And the way India has taken the country forward during the Corona period, the world has seen our potential. When the supply chain of the world was destroyed, there was pressure on the big economy, at that time also we had said that if we want to see the development of the world, then it should be human-centered, full of human sensibilities, and then We will go and find the right solution to the problems and Kovid has taught us or forced us, but we cannot do the welfare of the world by leaving human sensibilities.

Today India is becoming the voice of the Global South. India's prosperity and heritage is becoming an opportunity for the world today. Friends, India's participation in the global economy, global supply chain, I say with full confidence, the situation that has arisen in India today, what India has earned today, has come with the guarantee of stability in the world. Now neither in our mind, nor in the mind of my 140 crore family members, nor in the mind of the world, there are any ifs, there are any buts, faith has been formed.

My dear countrymen, now the ball is in our court, we should not let the opportunity go, we should not miss the opportunity. I also congratulate my countrymen in India because my countrymen have the ability to understand the roots of the problems and therefore in 2014, after 30 years of experience, my countrymen decided that the country To move forward, a stable government is needed, a strong government is needed, a government with full majority is needed, and the countrymen have formed a strong and stable government. And for three decades, which was a period of uncertainty, which was a period of instability, the country was freed from political compulsions.

My dear family members, the country has such a government today, it is devoting every moment of time and every penny of the public's welfare for the well-being of the people, for the balanced development of the country, and the respect of my government and my countrymen is linked to one thing. Our every decision, our every direction has only one criterion, Nation First and Nation First, this is going to produce far-reaching results, positive results. Work is being done on a large scale in the country. But I would like to say that in 2014 you formed a strong government and I say that you formed a government in 2014 and 2019, so Modi got the courage to reform. You formed such a government that Modi got the courage to reform. And when Modi made reforms one after the other, the people of my bureaucracy, my millions of hands and feet, who are working as part of the government in every corner of India, they took the responsibility of performing to transform the bureaucracy. He fulfilled the responsibility very well and he showed it by performing and when the public and Janardhan joined, it is also visible to be transformed. And that's why this period of reform, perform, transform is now shaping the future of India. And our thinking is on promoting those forces of the country, which are going to strengthen the foundation of the coming thousand years. The world needs youth power, youth skills. We have created a separate skill ministry, it will not only fulfill the needs of India, it will also have the ability to fulfill the needs of the world. We created the Ministry of Jal Shakti. If he also analyzes the composition of the ministry, then you will be able to understand the mind and brain of this government in a very good way. We have created the Ministry of Jal Shakti, this Ministry of Jal Shakti is ours, we are emphasizing on the development of water-sensitive systems to ensure that pure drinking water reaches each and every countryman of our country, to protect the environment. After Corona in our country, the world is looking for holistic health care, this is the need of the hour. We created a separate Ministry of AYUSH and today Yoga and AYUSH are making waves in the world.

It is because of our commitment to the world that the world has paid attention to us. If we ourselves deny this ability of ours, then how will the world accept it. But when the ministry was formed, the world also understood its value. Fisheries Our such a big beach, our crores of fishermen brothers and sisters, their welfare is also in our heart and that is why we have created separate ministries for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy so that the society Let us support the class of people who were left behind. There are parts of the government economy in the country, but a major part of the society's economy is the cooperative movement. Cooperative Ministry has been created and it is spreading its network through our cooperative institutions so that the poorest of the poor are heard there, their needs are met and they too can contribute to the development of the nation by being a part of a small unit. We have adopted the path of prosperity through cooperation.

My dear family members, when we came in 2014, we were at number 10 in the global economy and today the efforts of 140 crore countrymen have paid off that we have reached number 5 in the world economy. And this has not happened just like that when the demon of corruption was gripping the country, scams worth lakhs of crores were rocking the economy; We stopped the leakages, created a strong economy, we tried to spend maximum money for the welfare of the poor. And today I want to tell the countrymen that when the country is economically prosperous, it does not just fill the coffers; If there is a government that takes a pledge to do it, then how does the result come. I am giving the account of 10 years to my countrymen from the ramparts of the Red Fort in the witness of the tricolor. Seeing the figures, you will feel such a big change, such a big power. 10 years ago, 30 lakh crore rupees used to go to the states from the Government of India. In the last 9 years, this figure has reached 100 lakh crores.

Earlier, 70 thousand crore rupees were spent from the treasury of the Government of India for the development of local bodies, today it is going more than 3 lakh crores. Earlier, 90 thousand crore rupees were spent to build the houses of the poor, today it has increased 4 times and more than 4 lakh crore is being spent to build the houses of the poor. First the poor get cheap urea. The bags of urea which are sold for ₹ 3,000 in some markets of the world, my farmers got that bag of urea for ₹ 300 and that is why the government of the country is giving subsidy of ₹ 10 lakh crore to my farmers in urea. 20 lakh crore rupees have been given to the youth of my country for self-employment, for their business, for their business. 8 crore people have started new business and 8 crore people have started business, it is not that every businessman has given employment to one or two people. The 8 crore citizens who have benefited from the Mudra Yojana have the ability to provide employment to 8-10 crore new people. With the help of about three and a half lakh crore rupees to MSMEs, they were not allowed to drown even in the crisis of Corona, they were not allowed to die, they were given a strength. One rank one pension was a matter of respect for the soldiers of my country, 70 thousand crore rupees have reached from India's coffers today. My retired army heroes have reached their families in the pocket. I have listed only a few in all the categories, I do not want to take much time. In every category, many times more money than before, for the development of the country, to create employment in every nook and corner, every penny should be used to change the fortune of India and that is why we have worked.

My dear loved ones, not only this, the result of all these efforts we have made is that today in my tenure of 5 years, in 5 years, 13.5 crore of my poor brothers and sisters have come out in the form of new middle class by breaking the chains of poverty. There can be no greater satisfaction in life than this.

My dear dear family members, when 13.5 crore people came out of this problems of poverty, then what kind of schemes have helped them, they got the benefit of the housing scheme, 50 thousand crore rupees from the PM Swanidhi have reached the street vendors. In the coming days, we will further implement a program on the coming Vishwakarma Jayanti, on this Vishwakarma Jayanti, we will give about 13-15 thousand crore rupees to the people who live with traditional skills, who work with tools and with their own hands. , mostly from the OBC community. Be it our carpenters, our goldsmiths, our masons, our laundry workers, our hair cut brothers and sisters, our families, to give a new strength to such people, we will celebrate Vishwakarma Jayanti in the coming month. Will launch the scheme and start it with about 13-15 thousand crore rupees. We have deposited 2.5 lakh crore rupees in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi directly into the accounts of the farmers of my country. We have spent two lakh crore rupees on the Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure that pure water reaches every household. We have started the Ayushman Bharat scheme so that the poor can get rid of the trouble they used to go to the hospital due to illness. He should get medicines, he should be treated, the operation should be done in the best hospital, we have spent 70 thousand crore rupees under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Livestock The country remembers about the corona vaccine, 40 thousand crore rupees were spent, but you will be happy to know that we have spent about 15 thousand crore rupees for vaccination of livestock to save the livestock.

My dear countrymen, my dear family members, Jan Aushadhi Kendras have given a new strength to the senior citizens of the country, to the middle class families of the country. In a joint family, if someone gets diabetes, a bill of 2-3 thousand becomes natural. We gave the medicines which are available for Rs.100 in the market from Jan Aushadhi Kendra for Rs.10, Rs.15, Rs.20. And today, from 1000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras of the country, about 20 crore rupees are left in the pocket of such people who needed medicines for these diseases. And these are mostly people from middle class families. But seeing its success today, I want to tell the countrymen that we are going to touch that section of the society with a Vishwakarma scheme. Now, from 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the country, we are going to work in the coming days with a target of 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras.

My dear family members, when there is less poverty in the country, then the power of the middle class section of the country increases a lot. And I assure you that in the coming five years, Modi's guarantee is that the country will take its place in the first three world economies, it will definitely take place. Today the 13.5 crore people who have come out of poverty have in a way become a middle class force. When the purchasing power of the poor increases, the business power of the middle class increases. When the purchasing power of the village increases, the economic system of the town and city runs at a faster pace. And this interconnected is our Earth cycle. We want to move ahead by giving it strength.

My dear family members, the weak people who live inside the city, the trouble that remains without talking. Middle class families are dreaming of their own house. We are coming up with a plan for that too for the coming few years and in which my family members who live in cities but live in rented houses, live in slums, live in chawls, unauthorized colonies lives in. If my family members want to build their own house, then we have decided to help lakhs of rupees by giving relief within the interest of the loan they will get from the bank. If the income tax limit of my middle class family is increased from two lakh to seven lakh, then the biggest benefit is to the salary class, to my middle class. Internet data was very expensive before 2014. Now the world's cheapest internet is being spent on data, every family's money is being saved.

My dear family, the world has not yet emerged after Corona, the war has again created a new problem. Today the world is facing the crisis of inflation. Inflation has gripped the economy of the whole world. We also bring the goods which are needed from the world, so we import the goods, it is our misfortune that we have to import inflation as well. So this whole world has been gripped by inflation.

My dear family, India has tried its best to control inflation. Compared to the previous period, we have also got some success, but we cannot be satisfied with this much. We cannot think that our things are better than the world, I have to take more steps in this direction to minimize the burden of inflation on my countrymen. And we will continue to take that step. My efforts will continue.

My dear family members, today the country is moving forward with many capabilities. The country is working to move towards modernity. Today the country is working in renewable energy, today the country is working on green hydrogen, the country's capacity in space is increasing. So the country is moving ahead successfully in the deep sea mission as well. Rail is getting modern in the country, so Vande Bharat Bullet Train is also working inside the country today. Concrete roads are being built in every village, electric buses and metro are also being built in the country today. Today the internet is reaching every village, so the country is also working for quantum computers. Nano Urea and Nano DAP are being worked on and on the other hand we are also emphasizing on organic farming. Today the Farmers Producers Union (FPO) is being built, so we want to build semiconductors as well. As we work to build an accessible India for Divyangjan, we are also enabling my Divyangjan to hoist the tricolor flag of India in Paralympics. We are giving special training to the players.

Today, India is moving ahead with the vision of achieving the goals by leaving the old thinking and the old pattern. And when I say that the foundation stone of which is laid by our government, it is also inaugurated in our period. You all have left it in my destiny to inaugurate the foundation stone that I am laying these days. Our work culture, thinking big, thinking far away, thinking for the benefit of all and happiness for all has been our working style. And with this energy we work on how to achieve more than a thought, more than a resolution. We had resolved to make 75 thousand Amrit Sarovar in the Amrit Mahotsav of independence. At that time, we had resolved to make 75 Amrit Sarovar in every district. Around 50-55 thousand Amrit Sarovar was conceived. But today the work of construction of about 75 thousand Amrit Sarovar is going on. This in itself is a huge task. This power of manpower and water power is also going to be useful in protecting India's environment. Providing electricity to 18,000 villages, opening Jan Dhan bank accounts, building toilets for daughters, all the targets will be accomplished with full force before time. And when India takes a decision, it fulfills it, this is what our track record says.

200 crore vaccination work. When the world asks us, doesn't it, 200 crores listen, their eyes tear up, such a big task. My country's Anganwadi workers, our Asha workers, our health workers have shown this. This is the strength of my country. Rolled out 5-G, my country is the fastest in the world to roll out 5-G. We have reached more than 700 districts. And now preparing for 6-G also. We have made a task force. Renewable energy We have moved ahead of the target. The target we had set for renewable energy by 2030, we have completed it in 2021-2022. We had talked about 20 percent blending in ethanol, that too we have completed five years ahead of time. We had talked about exports of 500 billion dollars, that too before the time it was increased to more than 500 billion dollars. We decided, which was being discussed in our country for 25 years, that a new parliament should be formed in the country. There was no such session of the Parliament, for the new Parliament, it is Modi who has made the new Parliament ahead of time, my dear brothers and sisters. This is a government that works, a government that surpasses the set targets, this is a new India, this is an India full of self-confidence, this is an India that is working hard to make its resolutions a reality. And so this India does not stop, this India does not tire, this India does not gasp and this India does not give up. And that's why my dear family members, economic power is full, our strategic power has got new strength, our borders have become more secure than before and my soldiers sitting on the border, my soldiers who are guarding the country's borders and my On this auspicious festival of independence, I extend my point by extending many congratulations to the uniform forces who look after the internal security of the country. Our army should be empowered, our army should be young, our army should be ready for battle, it should be capable of fighting, that's why the work of continuous reform is being done in our army today.

My dear family members, everyday we used to hear, there was a bomb blast here, there was a bomb blast there. It was written everywhere that don't touch this bag, announcements used to happen. Today the country is feeling secure and when there is security and peace, we can fulfill new aspirations of progress. For him, the era of serial bomb blasts has become a thing of the past. The death of innocents has become a thing of the past. Today there has been a drastic reduction in terrorist attacks in the country. There has been a big change in the naxal affected areas also, an environment of big change has been created.

My dear family members, there is progress in everything, but when we are moving ahead with the dream of a developed India by 2047, and that is not a dream, it is a resolution of 140 crore countrymen. And to prove that resolution, there is the culmination of hard work and its biggest strength is national character. The countries which have made progress in the world, the countries which have come out of the crisis in the world, along with everything else, there has been an important catalytic agent, that has been the national character. And we have to move forward by giving more emphasis to the national character. May our country, our national character be bright, bright, manly, mighty, intense; This is the collective responsibility of all of us. And for the coming 25 years, we should follow only one mantra, this should be the pinnacle of our national character. The message of unity, living the unity of India, the unity of India should not be harmed, neither my language will be like this, nor will I do any step like this. Efforts will continue to be made from my side to connect the country every moment. India's unity gives us strength. Be it north, be it south, be it east, be it west, be it village, be it city, be it man, be it woman; We all have the power of unity with the sense of unity and in a country full of diversity and secondly I see the importance, if we want to see our country as a developed India in 2047 then we have to live the mantra of Shreshtha Bharat, we have to characterize.

Now in our production, I had said in 2014, zero defect, zero effect. If there is a Make in India item on any table in the world, then the world should believe, nothing can be better than this. It will be ultimate, our everything, our services will be best, our words will be best, our institutions will be best, our decision making processes will be best. We have to walk with this sense of superiority. Thirdly, to move forward in the country, the potential of an additional power is going to take India forward and that is women-led development. Today, India can proudly say that if any one country has the maximum number of women pilots in civil aviation in the world, then my country has them. Today, whether it is the speed of Chandrayaan, whether it is about the moon mission, my women-scientist is leading it. Today there should be women self-help groups, with the aim of my 2 crore Lakhpati Didi, today we are working on women self-help groups. We, while promoting the potential of our women power, women-led development and when I have taken forward the topics of women-led development in G-20, the whole G-20 group is accepting its importance and accepting its importance. By doing this, they are giving him a lot of power. Similarly, India is a country full of diversities. We have been a victim of unbalanced development, some parts of our country have been its victims because of my alienation. Now we have to give emphasis to regional aspirations for balanced development and giving due respect to that feeling regarding regional aspirations, as if any part of our mother India, our body remains undeveloped, then our body will not be considered developed. If any part of our body remains weak, then we will not be considered healthy, similarly, if any part of my mother India, even a section of the society remains weak, then we cannot sit thinking that my mother India is strong and healthy. . And that's why we need to address regional aspirations and that's why we want to move forward in the direction of all-round development of the society, all-round development, every region of the region gets an opportunity to blossom in its own strength.

My dear family members, India is a mother of democracy, India is also a model of diversity. There are many languages, many dialects, many costumes, many variations. We have to move forward on the basis of all of them.

My dear family members, when I talk about the unity of the country, if an incident happens in Manipur, there is pain in Maharashtra, if floods happen in Assam, Kerala becomes restless. Whatever happens in any part of India, we feel the spirit of organ donation. The daughters of my country should not be oppressed, it is our social responsibility as well, it is our family responsibility as well and it is the responsibility of all of us as a country. Today, when the form of Guru Granth Sahib is brought back from Afghanistan, the whole country feels proud. Today, when in any country of the world, during the time of Kovid, a Sikh brother of mine sets up langar, feeds the hungry and there is applause in the world, then India's heart swells.

My dear family members, for us when women talk about respect. Just now, I was visiting a country where a very senior minister asked me a question, where do your daughters study science and engineering subjects? I told them that today in my country more daughters than boys are taking STEM i.e. science, technology, engineering and maths, my daughters are taking maximum part, so it was a surprise for them. This capability of our country is visible today.

My dear family members, today 10 crore women are involved in women self help and if you go to village with women self help group, you will find didi with bank, you will find didi with anganwadi, you will find didi who gives medicines and now my dream is 2 crore millionaires. To make didi, 2 crore millionaire didi in the village. And sent a new alternative for this, science and technology. I see the potential of the women of our village and therefore I am thinking of a new plan that technology should come in our agriculture sector, agritech should be strengthened, so we will give training to the sisters of Women Self Help Group. We will give training to operate drones, repair drones and the Government of India will provide drones to thousands of such Women Self Help Groups, they will provide training and we will start to make drone services available for our agricultural work, initially we will start 15 thousand Women Self Help Groups. We are starting this drone flight through Help Group.

My dear family members, today the country is moving towards modernity. Be it Highway, Railway, Airway, I-Ways, Information Ways, Water Ways, there is no area in which the country is not working towards progressing today. In the last 9 years, we have given a lot of emphasis on development in the coastal areas, in the tribal areas, in our hilly areas. We have given strength to that section of the society through schemes like Parvat Mala, Bharat Mala. We have done the work of connecting our eastern India with gas pipeline. We have increased the number of hospitals. We have increased the number of doctors' seats so that our children can fulfill their dream of becoming doctors. We have changed teaching in mother tongue and in that direction they can study in mother tongue and I also thank the Supreme Court of India that the Supreme Court of India has said that the judgment which will be given now will be the operative part of it. The one who has come to the court, will be available to him in his language. The importance of mother tongue is increasing today.

My dear family members, till date, we have started a program of Vibrant Border Village in the Border Villages of our country and till now Vibrant Border Village was said to be the last village of the country, we have changed that whole thinking. It is not the last village of the country, the one visible on the border is the first village of my country. If the sun rises in the east, the village on that side receives the first ray of sunlight. If the sun sets, the village on this side gets its benefit of the last ray. This is my first village and I am happy that today my special guests in this program, this is the first village, a border village, its 600 heads have come today to be a part of this important program at the ramparts of the Red Fort. He has come this far for the first time. Have come to join with new determination and strength.

My dear family members, we envisioned Aspirational District, Aspirational Block for balanced development and today we are getting happy results. Today, the normal parameters of the state, the Aspirational Districts, which were once far behind, have started doing well in the state as well and I am sure that in the coming days, our aspirational districts, our aspirational blocks will definitely move forward. As I said, I was talking about India's character, first I said about India's unity, secondly I said that India should focus on excellence, thirdly I said about women development. And today I want to say one more thing that as we have said about the fourth point, regional aspiration is the fifth important thing and India has now moved in that direction and that is our national character, we should think for the betterment of the world. We have to make the country so strong that it can play its role for the welfare of the world. And today after Corona, I am seeing, the way the country helped the world in the time of crisis, the result is that today our country is in the form of a world friend in the world. As an unbreakable companion of the world. Today the identity of my country has been made. When we talk about World Mars, then the basic idea of India is that we are the people who take forward that idea and I am happy that today many elected dignitaries of the US Parliament are also among us on this occasion of 15th August. are present in What is the thinking of India, how do we take forward the matter of World Mars. Now see, when we think, what do we say, we have put this philosophy in front of the world, and the world is joining us with that philosophy. We said One Sun, One World, One Grid. Our statement is very big in the field of renewable energy, today the world is accepting it. After Kovid, we told the world that our approach should be One Earth, One Health. Problems will be solved only when humans, animals and plants are addressed equally in times of illness, then we will do this. We have said in front of the world for the G-20 Summit, One World, One Family, One Future, we are moving forward with this thought. We have shown the way for the climate crisis the world is facing, we have launched a live mission Lifestyle For Environment. Together we formed the International Solar Alliance in front of the world and today many countries of the world are becoming a part of the International Solar Alliance. Seeing the importance of bio-diversity, we have taken forward the arrangement of Big Cat Alliance. We need far-reaching arrangements for the damage caused to the infrastructure due to global warming due to natural calamities. and so Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure , CDRI has given to the world as a solution. Today the world is making seas the center of conflict, then we have given the world the platform of oceans. Which can become a guarantee of global maritime peace. We have worked towards setting up a global level center of WHO in India by giving emphasis to the traditional system of medicine. We have worked towards world welfare and world health through Yoga and AYUSH. Today, India is laying a strong foundation for World Mars. It is the job of all of us to take this strong foundation forward. We all have responsibility.

My dear family members, the dreams are many, the resolution is clear, the policies are clear. There is no question mark in front of Niyat. But we have to accept some realities and to solve them, my dear family members, today I have come to seek your help from the Red Fort, I have come to seek your blessings from the Red Fort. Because in the last years what I have understood the country, what I have seen the needs of the country. And on the basis of experience I am saying that today we have to take those things seriously. In the golden age of independence, in 2047, when the country will celebrate 100 years of independence, at that time the tricolor flag of India in the world should be the tricolor flag of developed India; Transparency and fairness are the first strong needs. It should be our collective responsibility to give as much fertilizer and water to that strength as we can, through institutions, as citizens, as families. And that's why look at the history of the last 75 years, there was no dearth in India's potential and why can't this country, which was once called the golden bird, stand again with that potential. Friends, my dear family members, I have an unwavering belief that in 2047, when the country will celebrate 100 years of independence, my country will be a developed India. And I am saying this on the basis of the strength of my country. Saying on the basis of my available resources and most of all on the basis of my youth power under 30 years of age. I am telling this on the strength of my mothers and sisters, but if there is any hindrance in front of it, in the last 75 years some works have been done in such houses, it has become such a part of our social system that sometimes even we Let's turn it off. Now is not the time to close your eyes. If the dreams have to be fulfilled, the resolutions have to be crossed, then it is the need of the hour to fight the three evils by turning an eye to eye. Corruption is at the root of all the problems of our country, like a termite, it has completely snatched away all the systems of the country, all the capabilities of the country. Freedom from corruption, fight against corruption in every unit, in every sector and I countrymen, my dear family members, it is the commitment of Modi's life, it is the commitment of my personality that I will continue to fight against corruption. Second, familyism has snatched our country. The way this family system has held the country tight, it has taken away the rights of the people of the country, and the third evil is appeasement. This appeasement has also stained the basic thinking of the country, our all-inclusive national character. These people destroyed everything. And therefore my dear countrymen, therefore my dear family members, we have to fight against these three evils with all our might. Corruption, nepotism, appeasement, these challenges, these things have flourished which suppress the aspirations of the people of our country. It exploits whatever little power some people of our country have. These are the things that put the hopes and aspirations of our people in question. Be it our poor, be it Dalit, be it backward, be it Pasmanda, be it our tribal brothers and sisters, be it our mothers or sisters, we all have got rid of these three evils for their rights. We have to create an atmosphere of hatred against corruption. Just as dirt creates hatred in our mind, we do not like dirt, there can be no bigger filth than this in public life. And that's why we have to give a new twist to our cleanliness campaign that we have to get rid of corruption. The government is making a lot of efforts to get rid of corruption through technology. You would be surprised to know, in the last 9 years in this country, I did one thing like this; If you listen to the figure, you will feel that Modi acts as if I have stopped the wrong benefits that nearly 10 crore people used to take. So someone among you will say that you have done injustice to the people; No, who were these 10 crore people, these 10 crore people were those people who were not even born and in their name they used to become widows, they used to get old, they used to become disabled, they used to take benefits. Were. The pious task of stopping 100 million such benami things that used to go on, the property of the corrupt that we have seized, isn't it, is 20 times more than before.

My dear family members, these people ran away after taking your hard earned money. Confiscating 20 times more property, and hence people's resentment towards me is very natural. But I have to take forward the fight against corruption. Due to our government system, earlier something used to happen in front of the camera, but later things used to get stuck. We have done many times more chargesheets in the court than before and now we are not even getting bails, we are moving forward by taking such a firm system, because we are honestly fighting against corruption. Today, familyism and appeasement have caused great misfortune to the country. Now how can this happen in democracy that political party, and I am giving special emphasis on political party, today there has been such a distortion in the democracy of my country that can never strengthen India's democracy and what is that disease, familial Parties. And what is their mantra, party of the family, by the family and for the family. Their life mantra is that their political party, their political party is of the family, by the family and for the family. Nepotism and nepotism are enemies of talents, deny abilities, do not accept potential. And therefore, for the strength of the democracy of this country of familyism, its liberation is necessary. Sarvajan Hitaya Sarvajan Sukhay, everyone should get rights, so it is very important for social justice as well, in the same way appeasement has done the biggest harm to social justice. If someone has destroyed social justice, then this appeasement thinking, appeasement politics, government schemes for appeasement, it has killed social justice. And that's why we find appeasement, corruption, these are the biggest enemies of development. If the country wants development, the country wants to fulfill the dream of 2047, developed India, then it is necessary for us that we will not tolerate corruption in the country under any circumstances, we should walk with this mood.

My dear family members, we all have a very important responsibility, the way you have lived, forcing our future generation to live such a life, it is our crime, it is our responsibility to give such a prosperous country to our future generation. Give such a balanced country, such a country with the legacy of social justice, that they never have to struggle to get even the smallest things. All of us have a duty, every citizen has a duty and this is the time of immortality. We cannot back down from our duty, we have to make the India which was the dream of revered Bapu, we have to make the India which was the dream of our freedom fighters, we have to make the India which was of our martyrs, our It belonged to the heroines who gave their lives for the motherland.

My dear family members, when I came to you in 2014, then in 2014 I came with the promise of change. In 2014, I promised you that I will bring change. And 140 crore of my family members, you have trusted me and I have tried to fulfill the trust. Reform, Perform, Transform The promise that was there for 5 years turned into a belief because I had promised transformation. Through Reform, Perform, Transform, I have converted this promise into a belief. Have worked hard, done it for the country, done it with pride, done it only and only with the feeling of nation first. You all have blessed me again on the basis of my performance in 2019. The promise of change got me here, the performance got me back and the next 5 years are of phenomenal growth. The biggest golden moment for realizing the dream of 2047 is the coming 5 years. And next time on August 15, from this Red Fort, I will present to you the achievements of the country, your capabilities, your resolve, the progress made in it, its success, glorifying it with even more confidence.

My dear loved ones, my family members, I come from you, I came out of you, I live for you. Even if I dream, it comes for you. Even if I sweat, it is for you, not because you have given me a responsibility, I am doing it because you are my family and as a member of your family, I cannot see any of your sorrows. I can't stand watching your dreams shatter. I am a person who has gone with a resolution to be your partner, to be your servant, to be associated with you, to live with you, to fight for you, to take your resolution to perfection and I believe in our The dreams that our ancestors had fought for freedom, those dreams are with us. The blessings of those who made sacrifices in the freedom struggle are with us and such an opportunity has come for 140 crore countrymen, this opportunity has brought a great strength for us.

My dear family members, my family members living in every corner of the world, I once again extend my best wishes to all of you on the auspicious festival of Independence. And this amrit kaal is the duty time for all of us. This Amrit Kaal is the time for all of us to do something for Maa Bharti. When the war of independence was going on, the generation who was born before 1947 got the opportunity to die for the country. He did not leave any chance to die for the country, but we do not have the chance to die for the country. But there cannot be a bigger opportunity than this for us to live for the country. We have to live every moment for the country, along with this resolution, we also have to make a resolution for the dreams of 140 crore countrymen in this immortal period. The resolution of 140 crore countrymen has to be converted into achievement and when the tricolor flag will be hoisted in 2047, then the world will be praising a developed India. With this belief, with this determination, I wish all of you many, many best wishes. Many many congratulations.

Jai Hind, Jai Hind, Jai Hind!

Bharat Mata ki Jai, Bharat Mata ki Jai, Bharat Mata ki Jai!

Vande Mataram, Vande Mataram, Vande Mataram!

Thank you very much!

Modi Praises ‘Limitless’ Potential of U.S.-India Partnership

In a speech to congress, prime minister narendra modi of india promoted his nation’s development and said the relationship between his country and the united states was important for democracy’s future..

The U.S. is the oldest — and India, the largest — democracy. Our partnership augurs well for the future of democracy. [cheers] Together, we shall give a better future to the world and a better world to the future. Everyone wants to understand India’s development, democracy and diversity. Everyone wants to know what India is doing right and how. We are not only growing bigger, but we are also growing faster. When India grows, the whole world grows. I can go on and go on. But to summarize I would say: The scope of our cooperation is endless, the potential of our synergy is limitless and the chemistry of our relations is effortless.

Biden welcomes India’s prime minister despite concerns over human rights.

President Biden emphasized common ground with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on Thursday during a lavish state visit meant to bolster ties with the world’s most populous nation, while largely skirting points of friction over human rights and Russia’s war in Ukraine, at least in public.

After a pomp-filled, red-carpet arrival ceremony, Mr. Biden and Mr. Modi announced a range of initiatives to advance cooperation in technology, energy and military hardware but revealed no movement toward each other on the areas of disagreement that have strained the relationship in recent months, most especially Ukraine.

In a modest but notable breakthrough, however, Mr. Biden coaxed Mr. Modi into taking questions from reporters at a news conference, apparently the first time he has done so in his nearly decade-long tenure .

Here’s what else to know:

Challenged on his record on human rights and religious freedom, Mr. Modi insisted that democracy was “in India’s DNA” and denied that his government had engaged in discrimination based on race, faith or other such distinctions. Mr. Modi’s government has cracked down on dissent and hounded opponents in a way that has raised fears of an authoritarian turn not seen since India’s slip into dictatorship in the 1970s. In hosting Mr. Modi, Mr. Biden is pushing democracy concerns to the background .

The United States is trying to draw India closer , as the urgency for improved relations has intensified with Russia’s war on Ukraine. India has maintained military and economic relations with Russia, buying up Russian oil at a discount and staying away from backing United Nations resolutions that have condemned Russia’s aggression.

Mr. Modi gave an address to a joint session of Congress where he promoted his country’s development and played up what he described as common themes with the United States.

The two leaders announced initiatives advancing cooperation on telecommunications, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and other areas. Mr. Modi agreed to sign the Artemis Accords — principles governing peaceful exploration of the moon, Mars and other celestial bodies — and they will announce a joint mission to the International Space Station in 2024. The United States and India also will open additional consulates in each other’s country.

Tonight, the Bidens will host Mr. Modi for a state dinner on the South Lawn. The vegetarian menu — in accordance with Mr. Modi’s diet — includes an optional fish entree. The first course will be a marinated millet and grilled corn kernel salad with compressed watermelon and avocado sauce, followed by a main course of stuffed portobello mushrooms and creamy saffron-infused risotto.

Indian television heaps praise on Modi during his trip.

“Super King of Diplomacy,” read the ticker placed in bold on top of one news channel. “Long live our friendship,” said another. A third declared, “The Boss in America.”

Mainstream Indian news channels — in Hindi, English and some regional languages — covered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception in Washington with adulation, praising his diplomatic skills for millions of viewers before a crucial election year for him.

The visuals from Washington played into what Mr. Modi has already set as one of his main campaign themes: tying India’s rise as a major economic power with his rise as a global statesman.

“The scale, the splendor, the warmth,” one headline enthused. Others, such as “Modi’s breakthrough diplomacy” and “Watch history being made,” flooded Indians’ homes Thursday evening as Mr. Modi walked the red carpet to meet President Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden.

“Their body language reflected that they were incomplete without one another,” one news anchor said as visuals of the two leaders shaking hands played on the screen.

Mr. Modi has carefully crafted his relationship with traditional news outlets, using a mix of incentives and pressure tactics to get most of them on his side.

When uncomfortable issues arise — a state election loss, an ethnic war resulting in weeks of unrest and bloodshed in a northeastern state, a deadly three-way train crash — they are quick to deflect blame away from Mr. Modi.

And when a major moment like the state visit to Washington comes, they are happy to join in the cheerleading — a factor that, combined with how Mr. Modi’s party has mastered social media to take his messages viral, helps explain Mr. Modi’s talent for shaping politics to his benefit.

The coverage of Mr. Modi’s visit to the United States is a political boon, setting the agenda in his favor before he launches himself full-time into campaign mode for parliamentary elections next year.

While many channels showed the White House dinner menu ad nauseam, calling it “dinner for friendship,” some others waxed eloquent about the importance of the gifts Mr. Modi had carried for the Bidens. One anchor declared of a military deal between the two countries: “The biggest defense deal. The hearts of enemies will burn!”

And when, at his news conference with Mr. Biden, Mr. Modi skirted a question on India’s grim human rights record and suppression of free speech, one Hindi-language news anchor came to his rescue on her show, saying he had “very bravely” faced the question.

The U.S. and India agree to speed deployment of electric buses.

The United States and India have long been at odds over the responsibility of different countries in tackling climate change. But as Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a visit to Washington, he and President Biden cast their nations as partners in the fight.

As Mr. Biden declared climate change an “existential threat to humanity” during a joint news conference on Thursday, Mr. Modi pledged that India was working to become a green energy hub. Both governments also announced plans to help India increase the production of electric vehicles and meet its ambitious goal of installing 500 gigawatts of wind, solar and other renewable energy this decade.

The Biden administration did not announce any direct U.S. funding for India. But senior administration officials said the governments had agreed on a plan they believed would encourage banks to give loans for electric buses, which are seen as a high-risk investment in India.

India aims to deploy 50,000 public electric buses over the next five years. The plan includes establishing three months of delayed payments so that companies can secure loans at lower rates. Biden administration officials said the payment security plan will help underwrite at least 10,000 electric buses.

The United States and India also announced a separate investment plan that officials said will be joined by private companies and others that aims to lower the cost of capital and attract international private finance for large-scale renewable energy projects. The joint announcement billed it a “first of its kind, multibillion dollar” package but no specific dollar figure from the United States or any other country or organization was announced.

One accomplishment of Modi’s visit? Greater defense cooperation between India and the U.S.

One of the biggest takeaways from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit might be that it has injected new momentum into defense cooperation between the United States and India, a slow and turbulent undertaking in the past.

The two sides announced a deal for coproduction in India of engines for fighter aircraft, a $3 billion purchase of about 30 American Reaper drones by India, and a road map to expand cooperation between the two countries’ defense industries. There were also agreements on intelligence sharing and on space-based, quantum and other strategic technologies.

For the Biden administration, helping India expand its defense manufacturing tracks with its efforts to further isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine . India has long relied on Russia for a majority of its military equipment, and any increase in manufacturing capability at home or diversification of its arms sources would lessen its purchases from Russia.

For India, the United States’ latest efforts to improve defense ties is in line with its attempt to grow its domestic manufacturing and reduce its reliance on foreign partners.

India’s military forces have stuck to most of the same weapons systems that they began using during the Cold War. India was neutral but tended to side more closely with the Soviet Union. Indian officials have said their dependence on Russian weapons over the decades was simply out of necessity: The U.S. long held back on sales of military equipment to India, and that has only started to change over the past two decades. As a result, the Indian armed forces still use equipment of Soviet design and specifications. Parts cannot be swapped out, piecemeal, for American-standard weaponry. In some rare cases, as with India’s use of Lockheed’s C-130 Hercules transport plane, a stand-alone American platform can be soldered onto the existing framework. But for the most part, the systems are not interoperable.

Technical challenges aside, one thing that the defense road map seems to be addressing is the reluctance that has kept the world’s biggest two democracies from seeing eye-to-eye. They have a long history of disagreement, over matters including Pakistan, Iraq and United Nations votes. But tensions with China are bringing them to the same table, especially after Indian and Chinese troops started clashing along their Himalayan border in 2020.

Australia and Japan, the other members of the fledgling security bloc aimed at containing China around the “Indo-Pacific region” (as the Americans renamed it, to include the Indian Ocean, in 2018), have long-established military partnerships and even alliances with the United States.

The “ Roadmap for U.S.-India Defense Industrial Cooperation ,” published earlier this month, illustrates the American goal of making India into something more like a formidable ally — and the Indian goal of beefing up its own capabilities. They find common cause in trying to “cooperatively produce the systems required to meet India’s military modernization objectives.”

But India’s ties with Russia are deep and cannot be undone quickly or with good will alone. Ajai Shukla, a retired colonel with the Indian Army who writes extensively about defense, is skeptical that America will find any durable role to play. He recalls how Alexander Kadakin, a Russian ambassador to India, liked to tell the story about visiting the Indian space centers and feeling more at home there than he did in Russia — because so many of the scientists were speaking Russian.

Modi waves to crowd in the third floor gallery, who stuck around to cheer him as he slowly makes his way toward the exit. Emphasis on slowly. He stopped for more autographs and pictures on the way out.

He texted from the speech to say that he “appreciated PM Modi’s unequivocal statement that India must be home to all faiths and celebrate all of them.” But he added that “American leaders need to also have the difficult conversations with Indian leaders about protecting minority rights, an open press and open internet.”

At the White House, some 400 guests are going to pass by reporters to attend the dinner. One of the guests is Representative Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, who played a part in inviting Modi to give an address to Congress.

Here’s why Modi and many other Indian politicians stay single.

When President Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, take their place on the red carpet at the White House on Thursday to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, there will be an asymmetry of sorts in the picture-perfect setting.

Mr. Modi will go stag.

While a family-centric image is often a political selling point in the United States, in India, many top leaders — the prime minister among them — are proudly unattached, to make a statement that no other commitment can come between them and the nation.

Work-life balance? Not for politicians in the world’s largest democracy, who stay busy attending to the needs of 1.4 billion people and compete with one another in their declarations of sleep deprivation. (Mr. Modi clocks only four hours of slumber a night, his aides say.)

“Every moment of my time, every pore of my body, is only for my countrymen,” the prime minister said in 2019 after winning re-election .

India may seem a strange place for expressions of solitary political devotion. Here, family comes before self and arranged marriages keep families together. Nearly a third of new members of Parliament have had a relative in elected office or a prominent party position, according to one study .

But in a country tired of official corruption, with lawmakers enriching themselves and their families and ensuring political futures for their children, many voters have come to believe that single politicians are less likely to steal.

“The very strong perception,” said Ajoy Bose, a journalist and author, “is that they have no personal interest. That they belong to the people.”

Modi is sticking around in the well of the chamber to shake hands and sign autographs after the speech. In the gaggle of lawmakers around him are Representatives Shri Thanedar, Democrat of Michigan who was born in India; Mike Lawler, Republican of New York; Brad Sherman, Democrat of California; and Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina. Modi seems to be enjoying the attention and is not in a rush to leave the chamber -- though his security detail is trying to gently nudge him out.

As Modi makes his way out of the House chamber, he is stopped by members asking him to autograph their printed copies of his remarks.

India’s economy is already a star, but Modi wants the attention of American businesses and investors.

NEW DELHI — The state visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India is full of eye-catching moments — practicing yoga outside the United Nations building in New York and addressing a joint session of Congress — that seem designed to burnish both India’s image on the world stage and his own image at home.

Apart from impressing voters back home and his fellow statesmen, Mr. Modi is hoping to get the attention of American businesses and investors.

India’s expanding economy is already in some ways a star. It displaced Britain as the world’s fifth biggest economy last year, and is on track to outpace both Germany and Japan in the decade ahead. The value of the companies listed on its stock markets are worth $3.3 trillion, more than ever before, and Mr. Modi’s government has tackled some challenges that have long stymied Indian growth, including rickety infrastructure and banks burdened with bad loans.

Foreign investors have taken notice, especially with much of the world’s economy looking shaky. A string of high-tech, high-value companies have flocked to India this year, with Apple and possibly Tesla making it known that they see a big future here.

But there are ominous signs, too. While foreign investment has been pouring in and the government has spent heavily on roads, energy and other public goods, private Indian investment has shrunk in proportion to the whole. And the incomes of average Indians have hardly budged in recent years, with most of the country still dependent on farming and many others working in jobs that barely keep them fed.

Indian and American policymakers and businessmen have been trying to devise ways that the United States could help India meet the moment — through a combination of trade, technology transfer, labor mobility and integration with global supply chains.

India’s trade with the United States is worth about $190 billion now, Atul Keshap, a former American ambassador to New Delhi who is president of the U.S.-India Business Council, said in an online discussion this week. It should soon be worth $500 billion, he argued, on par with the size of the U.S. trade relationships with only a few others: Canada, Mexico, the European Union and China.

The relationship could be boosted by the two countries’ altered relationships with China, not only in geopolitics, but also in civilian business and trade. American companies and political leaders are eyeing India — with its 1.4 billion people, same as China — as the sole country fit to shoulder some of the immense weight that China has carried in the world economy. “It’s a lot easier to invest $100 million in a country with 1.4 billion people than in a country with 40 million people,” said Cate Ambrose, chief executive of the Global Private Capital Association, an industry group focused on emerging markets.

With much of the world’s economy hindered by the war in Ukraine, inflation and other headwinds, the Indian economy’s power increasingly stands out. This week, Airbus, a European airplane-maker, signed deal to sell 500 aircraft to IndiGo, a low-cost Indian carrier founded in 2006. It is the kind of contract that American leaders dream of winning for the U.S. airplane giant Boeing.

Indians’ median incomes may be stagnant, even as gains made by wealthier people have brought the per capita income up to $1,200 a year. But the room for growth makes the country attractive as a consumer market. Last year, for example, 123 million passengers flew between India’s airports. The government’s goal is to reach 1 billion by 2040.

A new emphasis in the U.S.-India relationship is high-value manufacturing, and an initiative on emerging technologies has brought together government agencies from both countries to speed up cooperation on microchips, satellites and artificial intelligence. The White House argues that these projects, which sidestep bilateral trade negotiations, should help foster “resilient supply chains” for both countries.

One of the things that makes Modi an interesting kind of popular leader in our current global moment might be his optimistic tone. He speaks of positive momentum, success and destiny more than flaws and enemies.

Mujib Mashal

As we wrote in our recent story about his role as a radio host, Modi has many avatars for keeping himself intimately omnipresent across India’s vastness — including that of a poet. He has written poetry in Gujarati, though he was reading a Hindi poem just now.

Congressional addresses often end with poetic language, but not usually poetry. After quoting the poem Amanda Gorman read at President Biden’s inauguration, Modi recited lines in Hindi that he penned himself.

On China, Modi has always been careful to avoid escalating tensions. When tensions at the India-China border escalated to bloody skirmishes, American diplomats were saying Modi’s government was not comfortable with U.S. officials mentioning China by name in statements made out of New Delhi.

A policy proposal from Modi, as he calls for the African Union to get full membership in the G20. (The speech so far has been big on promoting accomplishments but light on articulating demands for change.)

As Peter notes, the omissions of the words “Russia” and “China” show how carefully Modi is choosing his words as he supports the spirit of the U.S. position, while clearly signaling that India is not going to take a side in these geopolitical rivalries.

The technology transfer piece of the defense deal reflects not just improved U.S.-India ties, but also a major shift in how the United States works with allies in the Indo-Pacific. Australia is getting nuclear-powered subs from America. Japan is buying American Tomahawk missiles. It’s all part of a broader effort to balance China’s military growth.

U.S.-India defense relations have had to overcome a history of deep mistrust rooted in both bureaucracies. But it feels like the countries are turning a new page. The American defense secretary and national security adviser were both in New Delhi in the weeks before Modi’s visit to Washington.

India’s ties to Russia stretch decades, and India still relies on Russia for a majority of its military equipment. So India has been careful in calling for peace and dialogue while staying away from condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

In discussing Ukraine, Modi calls for respecting U.N. principles of sovereignty, earning a standing ovation. He also said “we all must do what we can to stop the bloodshed and human suffering.” However, India continues to buy a lot of oil from Russia, engaging in a practice that the United States argues fuels the Russian war machine.

Likewise, when he discusses “the dark clouds of coercion and confrontation” that are “casting their shadow in the Indo-Pacific,” he leaves unstated who might be doing the coercing and confronting, never mentioning the word “China.”

When Modi mentions Ukraine, he shifts to passive construction. “With the Ukraine conflict, war has returned to Europe,” he said, without mentioning the word “Russia.”

State Dinners: Who Gets Them, Who Doesn’t and Why They Matter

As President Biden welcomed India’s prime minister to the White House , the two leaders were looking for more than a fine vegetarian meal and a night of glitzy entertainment.

Under the guise of pomp and pageantry, state visits are a chance for presidents to push foreign dignitaries to align with American interests. They can be a way to celebrate old, ironclad alliances . And with high-profile guest lists , multicourse meals and top-flight entertainment, they are much-coveted invites in Washington .

“These are not just dinners,” said Matthew Costello, a senior historian for the White House Historical Association. “There’s a lot more that goes into them in terms of planning, in terms of invitations, and a lot is geopolitics, a lot is foreign policy.”

When President Dwight D. Eisenhower invited Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union, to the White House in 1959, he was focused on thawing Cold War tensions after the launch of Sputnik. Before President Barack Obama hosted President Xi Jinping of China, the two countries negotiated for weeks over an arms control accord for cyberspace. President Ulysses S. Grant held the first state dinner for King David Kalakaua of Hawaii to strengthen trade.

The dinners can also provide a window into the regions the United States is prioritizing — and the ones being neglected.

European and Latin American nations have received the most state dinner invitations, while sub-Saharan African and Southeast Asian nations have received the fewest, according to a study by the Center for Global Development that tracked 40 years of state visits from the Carter to Obama administrations.

Out of 160 dinners, just 15 were with guests from sub-Saharan Africa, the study found.

“To be a foreign leader and not get the state dinner, you feel snubbed,” said Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian. “It’s often the smaller countries in the world who don’t get them, but when you’re dealing with big power players like India, it’s a must.”

The invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was not without controversy. Mr. Biden has made the global struggle between democracy and autocracy a key part of his foreign policy, but Mr. Modi’s government has cracked down on dissent in ways that have raised fears of authoritarianism.

Still, the White House views the world’s most populous nation as a potentially welcome addition to its coalition against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as a crucial player in its growing economic competition with China.

The other nations whose leaders received the official invitation to dine with Mr. Biden — France and South Korea — have also been partners in Mr. Biden’s effort to confront Russia.

The state dinner can sometimes be a means of smoothing over hiccups among allies.

Mr. Biden hosted President Emmanuel Macron of France for the first state visit of his administration, more than a year after the two nations feuded over a deal to provide Australians with nuclear-powered submarines. Mr. Biden invited Anthony Albanese, the prime minister of Australia, for a state visit after he canceled a trip there in May because of negotiations over the debt ceiling with congressional Republicans.

“There are multiple times we see presidents using these visits to not just describe immediate concerns, but also to talk through short-term and long-term solutions,” Mr. Costello said.

Domestic politics often hang over the dinner, as well.

Julianna Smoot, Mr. Obama’s social secretary from 2010 to 2011, said she made sure to invite the often-feuding majority and minority leaders of the Senate, Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, to state dinners for a rare détente. Governors and mayors who had previously expressed support or campaigned for the president were likely to make the list. And the primary donors of presidential campaigns could expect an invitation, particularly if they had business connections to the visiting nation.

“They didn’t become donors in politics because they were slouches,” Ms. Smoot said. “A lot of them do international work and have an interest” in attending the dinner.

The prospect of strengthening political partnerships overseas and within U.S. borders was usually enough to get a quick response from invitees.

“You’re supposed to say yes,” Ms. Smoot said of responding to the invitations, “unless there’s a death in the family.”

Cheers and laughs for Modi’s hat tip to how well Indian American kids have done in successive national spelling bees.

Mentioning that the United States “has become one of our most important defense partners” gets a standing ovation. Not mentioned: India still buys weapons from Russia.

Another thought on Modi’s sales pitch. William Dalrymple, the esteemed historian of India’s past empires, told me recently that India’s sense of overconfidence might be its biggest problem at the moment, hindering the country’s ability to fully confront and solve the enormous challenges it faces, like youth unemployment and social, economic and religious divides.

Very true, Karoun. Not much love for digital payments here in a chamber that has struggled with how to regulate technology of any kind!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered delivered his speech on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day of India from the ramparts fo the Red Fort on Thursday (August 15).

Running for 98 minutes, this was the longest-ever speech by an Indian prime minister delivered on Independence Day. With this, he broke his own previous record of a 96-minute-long address given in 2016.

Here’s PM Modi’s full Independence Day speech in English, as published by the Press Information Bureau:

“My beloved 140 crore family members,

World’s biggest democracy and in the context of population as well, we are trusted for being number one. Such a humongous nation is today celebrating the festival of independence with its 140 crore brothers and sisters and all family members. On this momentous and sacred occasion, I extend my greetings to each and every citizen of the country, to each one who loves, respects and takes pride in our nation India.

My dear family members,

The Non-cooperation/Civil Disobedience and Satyagraha Movement under the leadership of our ‘pujyaBapu’ revered Mahatma Gandhi ji, bravehearts like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, and their generation, there will hardly be any person who has not contributed to the independence of the country. Today I respectfully pay homage to all those who contributed and sacrificed their lives during our freedom movement. I humbly bow down to their penance in giving us a free nation.

Today, 15th August, is also the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo, the great revolutionary and pioneer of spiritual life. It is also the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Dayanand Saraswati ji. This year our nation is going to celebrate with great fervor, the 500th birth anniversary of the iconic women warrior Rani Durgawati. We will also be remembering the premier of ‘bhakti and yog’ Meerabai, on the occasion of 525th years of her life immersed in spiritualism. Our country will be celebrating a milestone of 75th year on next 26th January which is our Republic Day. There will not be a bigger day to commit to national development, with new inspirations, new consciousness, new resolutions, as the country opens up immense possibilities and opportunities.

Unfortunately, this time the natural calamity created unimaginable distress in many parts of the country. I express my condolences to all the families who have suffered in this crisis and assure that the state in tandem with the central government will leave no stone unturned to stand by you and resolve all those troubles at the earliest.

In the past few weeks, particularly in Manipur in the North-East, and in some other parts of India, there has been a spell of violence, where many people lost their lives, and the dignity of mothers and daughters was violated. However, in the last few days, we have been hearing continuous reports of peace, and the entire nation stands with the people of Manipur. The people of Manipur have maintained peace in the past few days, and they should continue to foster that peace, as it is the path to resolution. Both the state and central governments are working together to find solutions to the issues and will continue to do so.

When we look back at history, there are moments that leave an indelible mark, and their impact lasts for centuries. Sometimes, these events might seem small and insignificant at the beginning, but they lay the roots for numerous problems. We all know that our country was invaded 1000-1200 years ago. A small kingdom and its king were defeated. However, we couldn’t have known that this event would lead India into a thousand years of subjugation. We got ensnared in slavery, and whoever came, looted us, and ruled over us. What an adverse period it must have been, that thousand-year span.

An event might seem small, but its effects can persist for a thousand years. Today, I want to mention this because during this phase, India’s brave souls from across the country continued to keep the flame of freedom burning, and establish a tradition of sacrifice. Mother India stood up to break chains, to shatter shackles, and the women power, youth power, farmers, and people from villages, workers and every Indian who lived, breathed, and strived for the dream of freedom was ready. A formidable force was ready for sacrifices to attain freedom. Numerous great souls, who spent their youth in prisons, were relentlessly striving to break the chains of slavery and for the freedom of the country.

That widespread consciousness, the all-encompassing form of sacrifice and penance, instilled a new belief in the hearts of the masses, and in 1947, the country finally achieved independence, fulfilling the dreams nurtured during a thousand years of subjugation.

I am talking about the events of a thousand years ago for a reason. I am witnessing another opportunity before our country, a time when we are living in such a period, when we have entered such an era. It is our good fortune that either we are living in youth or we have taken birth in the lap of Mother India in the first year of ‘Amrit Kaal’. And mark my words, my dear family members, the actions we take, the steps we take, the sacrifices we make, the penance we undertake in this era will define our legacy.

Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay; We will take decisions one after the other, and the golden history of the country for the next 1000 years is going to emerge from it. The events taking place in this period are going to impact the next 1000 years. The country, which has come out of the slave mentality and is dedicated to the ‘Panch-Pran’ or the five resolutions, is moving forward today with a new self-confidence. The nation is working wholeheartedly to fulfil the new resolutions. My Mother India which was once a powerhouse of energy, but was buried underneath a pile of ashes, has been awakened once again by the efforts, consciousness and energy of 140 crore countrymen. Maa Bharti has been awakened and we have experienced in the last 9-10 years that this is the period in which a new trust, a new hope and a new attraction has emerged all over the world towards India, towards the potential of India, and the world can see a spark for itself in this beam of light that is emanating from India. A new trust is growing around the world.

We are fortunate that we have inherited certain things from our ancestors and even the present era has created certain other things. Today we have demography; we have democracy; we have diversity. This trinity of demography, democracy and diversity has the potential to fulfill every dream of India. Today, while the countries around the world are witnessing an age structure that is growing old, India is moving energetically towards its youthful age structure. It is a period of great pride because today India has the highest population under the age of 30. This is what we have in my country, the youth below the age of 30 years; my country has crores of hands, crores of brains, crores of dreams, crores of resolutions! So, my brothers and sisters, my family members, we can get the desired results.

Such incidents change the fate of the country. This power changes the destiny of the country. We are at the milestone between 1000 years of slavery and 1000 years of grand future that is about to come. We are at this crossroads and hence we cannot stop, nor shall we live in a dilemma anymore.

Taking pride in the heritage that was once lost, gaining back the lost prosperity, let us once again believe that whatever we do, whatever step we take, whatever decision we make, will determine our direction for the next 1000 years and will write the fate of India. Today I would like to tell the youth of my country, to the sons and daughters of my country, you are fortunate. People hardly get the kind of opportunity that our youngsters are getting now,and so we don’t want to lose it. I have utmost faith in our youth power. There is huge potential/capability in our youth power and our policies as well as our ways provide an enabling environment to strengthen it.

Today my youth have propelled India to a certain position in the world’s first three startup economy systems. The youth of the world are amazed to see this power of India. Today the world is technology driven and the coming era is going to be influenced by technology. This gives a platform to showcase the prowess of India’s talent in technology who is going to play a new key role.

Recently, I went to Bali for the G-20 Summit and there the premiers of the most prosperous and developed countries of the world showed immense curiosity and were so eager to learn about the nuances and the success of our Digital India. They were in awe of our talent when I shared that this wonder that India has achieved was not limited to the efforts made by youth of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai but also by the youth of my Tier-2, Tier-3 cities. Today they are shaping the fate of my country. Today my youth from even small places, and I say this with great confidence today, that this new potential of the country is visible. That is why I say that our small cities can be smaller in size and population but the hope and aspirations, effort and impact they have demonstrated are second to none. They have novel ideas to develop apps, provide solutions and design technological devices. Just look how our sports world has evolved. The children who came out of the slums are showing might in the world of sports today. The youth of small villages, small towns, our sons and daughters are achieving wonders today in this arena. Now see, there are 100 schools in my country where children are making satellites and also aspiring to release them one day. Today thousands of tinkering labs are conceiving new scientists. Today, thousands of tinkering labs are inspiring millions of children to take up the path of science and technology.

I want to tell the youth of my country that today there is no dearth of opportunities, as many opportunities as you want, this country is capable of creating more opportunities. Sky’s the limit.

Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I want to heartily congratulate the mothers, sisters and daughters of my country. Our country has reached a level today due to the special prowess and competence of my mothers and sisters. Today the country is on the path of progress, so I want to also congratulate my farmer brothers and sisters.Today I bow down to the laborers of my country, my laborers who are my dear family members and all the several crores who belong to these fraternities. Today, the country which is moving towards modernity, is seen with a power comparable to the world. This could not be possible without the huge contribution of the laborers of my country. Today is the opportune time to hail their tireless efforts from the ramparts of the Red Fort. I truly congratulate all of them.

I honor my family members, the 140 crore citizens of my country, these laborers, these street vendors and those who sell fruits and vegetables. Professionals play a significant role in moving my nation forward, in taking India to new heights of progress. Whether they are scientists, engineers, doctors, nurses, teachers, scholars, universities, gurukuls, everyone is contributing their utmost to brighten the future of Mother India.

National consciousness is the term that is liberating us from worries. And today, this national consciousness is proving that India’s greatest strength is trust. India’s greatest strength is trust, our trust in each individual, trust of each individual in government, trust of each one in a bright future for the nation, and the world’s faith in India as well. This trust is for our policies and practices. This trust is because of the determined steps with which we are moving forward, towards a brighter future for India.

Brothers and sisters,

My dear family members, it is certain that India’s capabilities and possibilities are set to traverse new heights of belief, and this new belief in abilities and new strengths should be nurtured. Today, the country has got the opportunity to host the G-20 summit. And the way various G-20 events and programs have been organized in every corner of India since the past year, they have showcased the abilities of common people to the world. These events have introduced the diversity of India. The world is observing India’s diversity with amazement, and as a result, the attraction towards India has also increased. There is a growing desire to know and understand India. Similarly, India’s export is growing rapidly. And I want to say that experts from around the world, based on all these criteria, are saying that India will not stop now. There is hardly any rating agency in the world which is not praising India.

The world has begun to think in a new way after the corona period. And I firmly believe that just as after the Second World War, the world formed a new world order, I can clearly see that a new world order, a new global order, a new geo-political equation is rapidly progressing after corona. All interpretations of the geo-political equation are changing, definitions are changing. My dear family members, you will take pride that the world is seeing the capabilities of my 140 crore fellow citizens in shaping the changing world. You are standing at a turning point.

And during the corona period, the world has seen our capabilities in the way India has propelled the country forward. When the world’s supply chains were disrupted, when there was pressure on big economies, even at that time, we had said that we have to see the development of the world. It should be human centric and humane; that is when we will be able to find the right solutions to the problems. And Covid has taught us or has forced us to realize that we cannot do the welfare of the world by leaving human sensibilities.

Today India is becoming the voice of the Global South. India’s prosperity and heritage are turning into opportunities for the world today. Friends, with India’s participation in the global economy and the global supply chain and with the place that India has earned for itself, I can say with full confidence that the current scenario in India today has brought a guarantee of stability in the world. There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’ now in our minds, or in the minds of my 140 crore family members, or in the mind of the world. There is complete trust.

My dear countrymen,

Now the ball is in our court; we should not let the opportunity go; we should not miss the opportunity. I also congratulate my countrymen in India because my countrymen have the ability to understand the roots of the problems and therefore in 2014, after an experience of 30 years, my countrymen decided that in order to take the country forward, a stable and a strong government was needed; a government with full majority was needed. So, the countrymen formed a strong and stable government. And the country was freed from the three-decades of uncertainty, instability and political compulsions that were gripping the nation.

The country has such a government today which is devoting every moment of the time and every penny of the people’s money for the balanced development of the country; for Sarvajan Hitaya: Sarvajan Sukhaya. The pride of my government and my countrymen is connected to one thing, that our every decision, our every direction is linked to just one yardstick, that is, ‘Nation First’. And ‘Nation First’, is going to produce far-reaching and positive results. Work is being done on a large scale in the country. But I would like to say that in 2014 as well as in 2019 you formed a strong government, and that is why Modi got the courage to bring reforms. You formed such a government that instilled courage in Modi to bring reforms. And when Modi brought reforms one after the other, the people of my bureaucracy, my crores of hands and feet, who are working as part of the government in every corner of India, ‘performed to transform’ . They fulfilled the responsibility very well and when the public joined in, we could see the transformation very clearly. And that’s why this period of ‘reform, perform, transform’ is now shaping the future of India. And we are promoting those forces within the country, which are going to strengthen the foundation of the coming thousand years.

The world needs youth power, youth skills. We have created a separate ministry for skill development. It will not only fulfill the needs of India, but will also fulfill the needs of the world.

We created the Ministry of Jal Shakti. If one analyzes the composition of the ministry, then you will be able to understand the mind and brain of this government in a very good way. The Ministry of Jal Shakti is laying emphasis on ensuring pure drinking water to reach each and every citizen of our country. We are reiterating and focusing on development of sensitive systems to protect the environment. After our country braved Corona, the world is looking for holistic health care; this is the need of the hour. We created a separate Ministry of AYUSH and today Yoga and AYUSH are making waves in the world. Because of our commitment towards the world, the world is looking up to us. If we ourselves undermine this ability of ours, then how will the world acknowledge it? But when this ministry was formed, the world also understood its value. We are not ignoring the Fisheries and our big beaches. We are cognizant of ensuring welfare of our crores of fishermen brothers and sisters. They are in our heart and that is why we have created a separate ministry for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy so that we can support those sections of the society and the class who have been left behind.

There are parts of the government economy in the country, but a large part of the society’s economy is the cooperative movement. Cooperative Ministry has also been created which is spreading its network through our cooperative institutions so that the poorest of the poor are heard, their needs are met and they too can contribute in an organized way towards the development of the nation by being a part of a small unit. We have adopted the path of prosperity through cooperation.

When we came in 2014, we were at number 10 in the global economy, and today the persistent efforts of 140 crore countrymen have finally paid off as we have reached the rank of number 5 in the world economy. And this has not happened just like that at a time when the nation was in the shackles of corruption had gripped the country, scams worth lakhs of crores were wreaking havoc on the economy, the country was being recognized in the governance and fragile file, we stopped leakages, created a strong economy; we tried to spend more and more money for the welfare of the poor. And today, I want to tell the countrymen that when the country is economically prosperous, it does not just fill the coffers; it builds the capability of the citizens and the nation. If there is a government that takes a pledge to spend this honestly for the welfare of its citizens, then, what outcomes could be achieved.

I am giving the account of 10 years to my countrymen from the ramparts of this Red Fort to which our tricolor stands a witness. The figures that you hear tell a compelling story of change, and you may wonder how this was achieved, how powerful is our capability to facilitate such a transformation. 10 years ago, 30 lakh crore rupees used to go to the states from the Government of India. In the last 9 years, this figure has reached 100 lakh crores. Earlier, 70 thousand crore rupees were spent from the treasury of the Government of India for the development of local bodies, today it is going to more than 3 lakh crores. Earlier, 90 thousand crore rupees were spent to build the houses of the poor; today it has increased 4 times and more than 4 lakh crores are being spent to build the houses of the poor.

First the poor should get cheap urea. The bags of urea that are sold for 3,000 rupees in some global markets, we provide to our farmers for 300 rupees, and hence the government is providing a subsidy of 10 lakh crore rupees on urea for our farmers. The Mudra Yojana, with a budget of over 20 lakh crore rupees, has provided opportunities for self-employment, businesses, and ventures for the youth of our country. About eight crore people have started new businesses, and it’s not just eight crore people who started their businesses; each entrepreneur has provided employment to one or two individuals. The capability to provide employment to 8-10 crore new individuals has been achieved through the Mudra Yojana availed by eight crore citizens.

During the Corona crisis, MSMEs were supported with nearly 3.5 lakh crore rupees, preventing them from sinking and providing them strength. Under the “One Rank One Pension” initiative, which was a tribute to our soldiers, 70,000 crore rupees from India’s treasury has reached them. The families of our retired soldiers have got this money. These are just a few examples and I don’t want to take more time. There are many more initiatives that have significantly contributed to the country’s development, generating employment in various corners of the nation as the budget has been increased manifold across categories as compared to before.

And my dear loved ones,

But that’s not all; the result of all these efforts is that in my first five-year term, 13.5 crore of my fellow poor brothers and sisters have broken free from the chains of poverty and entered the new middle class. There can be no greater satisfaction in life than this.

The various schemes from housing schemes, providing 50,000 crore rupees to street vendors through the PM SVANidhi scheme, and many more have aided these 13.5 crore people to rise above the hardships of poverty. In the days to come, we will launch a scheme on the occasion of VishwakarmaJayanti, benefiting individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship, particularly from the OBC community. Carpenters, goldsmiths, masons, laundry workers, barbers, and such families will be empowered through the Vishwakarma Yojana, which will begin with an allocation of around 13-15 thousand crore rupees. We have directly deposited 2.5 lakh crore rupees into the accounts of our farmers through the PM KisanSammanNidhi. We have spent 2 lakh crore rupees on the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring pure water to every household. We have eased the burden of the poor visiting hospitals during illness under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. We have spent 70,000 crore rupees under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana ensuring they have access to medicine, treatment, and quality hospital care. The country is aware that we spent 40,000 crore rupees to provide free vaccines during the Corona crisis. But you will be happy to know that we invested nearly 15,000 crore rupees for vaccination of livestock to save them.

My dear citizens, my dear family members,

Jan Aushadhi Kendras have provided new strength to senior citizens and middle-class families in our nation. In a joint family, if someone has diabetes, it’s quite natural to get a medical bill of Rs 2000-3000. We provide medicines which cost Rs 100 in the market for just Rs.10, Rs.15, Rs.20 through Jan Aushadhi Kendras . And today, with 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country, about Rs 20,000 crore have been saved by these people who needed medicines for these kinds of diseases. And these are mostly people who belong to middle-class families. But looking at its success today, I want to tell the countrymen that we are about to touch that section of the society with the Vishwakarma scheme. At the same time, we are also going to work on the target of 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country in the coming days from the present 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras.

When poverty reduces in the country, the power of the middle-class section of the country increases manifold. And I assure you that in the coming five years, Modi guarantees that the country will be among the top three world economies; it certainly will be. Today the 13.5 crore people who have come out of poverty have in a way become the middle-class. When the purchasing power of the poor increases, the power of the middle class to carry out business grows too. When the purchasing power of the villages increases, the financial system of the town and city runs at a faster pace. And our economic cycle is interconnected. We want to move ahead by strengthening it.

The weaker sections who live in the cities face a lot of problems. Middle-class families are dreaming of buying their own houses. We are coming up with a new scheme in the coming years that will benefit those families that live in cities but are living in rented houses, or slums, or chawls and unauthorized colonies. If they want to build their own houses, we will assist them with a relief in interest rates and loans from banks that will help them save lakhs of rupees. If the income tax bracket for my middle-class families is raised from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 7 lakh, it benefits the salaried class, the middle class the most. Internet data was very expensive before 2014. Now we have the world’s cheapest internet data. Every family’s money is being saved.

My family members,

The world has not yet come out of the adverse impacts of Corona; the war has again created an additional problem. Today the world is facing the crisis of inflation. Inflation has gripped the economy of the whole world. We also import some goods from around the world. Unfortunately, we have to import at inflated prices. So, this whole world has been gripped by inflation.

But my dear family members,

India has tried its best to control inflation. Compared to the previous period, we have also had some success, but we cannot be complacent with that. We should not be complacent that our things are better than that of the world. I have to take more steps in this direction to minimize the burden of inflation on my countrymen. And we will continue to take that step. My efforts will continue.

Today the country is moving forward with various capabilities. The country is working to move towards modernity. Today the country is working in the area of renewable energy; today the country is working on green hydrogen; the country’s capability in the space sector is increasing.

So the country is moving ahead successfully in the deep sea mission as well. Rail is getting modernized in the country. Vande Bharat Bullet Train is also now successfully plying inside the country today. Concrete roads are being built in every village. Electric buses and metro rails are also being built in the country today. Today the internet is reaching the last mile in every village as we also aspire to go for quantum computers. On the one hand Nano Urea and Nano DAP are being worked upon while on the other side we are also emphasizing on organic farming. Today the Farmers Producers Association app is being built while we aspire to build semiconductors as well.

As we work towards building an accessible and inclusive India for our specially- abled citizens Divyangjan, we are also enabling my Divyangjan to proudly unfurl our tricolor flag of India in Paralympics. We are providing special training to these players. Today, leaving the old thinking, the old scope, India is moving forward with a view to achieve these futuristic goals. And I say, when the foundation stone is laid by our government, it gets inaugurated within our regime too. I feel blessed that I was the chosen one and it was in my destiny to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of so many projects.

Our work culture of aspirational mindset, thinking big, farsightedness, Sarvajan Hitaya: SarvajanSukhaya: Such has been our working style. And with this energy we work on how to achieve beyond and more than a resolution. We had resolved to make 75 thousand Amrit Sarovar in the Amrit Mahotsav of independence. At that time, we had resolved to make 75 Amrit Sarovar in every district. Around 50-55 thousand Amrit Sarovars were conceived. But today the work of construction of about 75 thousand Amrit Sarovar is going on. This in itself is a humongous task. This strength of manpower and water power is also going to be useful in safeguarding India’s environmental wealth. Providing electricity to 18 thousand villages, opening bank accounts for the masses, building toilets for daughters, all the targets will be accomplished with full force ahead of time.

And when India takes a decision, it achieves it. This is what our track record says. Accomplishing 200 crore vaccinations successfully was an eyeopener for the world. A 200 crore figure leaves them flabbergasted. My country’s Anganwadi workers, our Asha workers, and our health workers have made this possible. This is the strength of my country. We rolled out 5-G. My country is the fastest in the world to roll out 5-G. We have reached more than 700 districts. And now we are already preparing for 6-G also.

We have made a task force. In the renewable energy sector we have surpassed our set target. The target which we had set for renewable energy by 2030 was completed in 2021-22. We had talked about 20 percent blending in ethanol, that as well we have completed five years ahead of time. The same was true about exports of 500 billion dollars, which was accomplished ahead of time and was increased to more than 500 billion dollars.

We had a resolve to accomplish something which was being discussed in our country for 25 years, that our country needs a new parliament; now it is ready. There has never been a session of the Parliament like this that there should be a new Parliament. It is Modi who has made sure the new Parliament was ready ahead of time, my dear brothers and sisters. This is a government that works, a government that surpasses the set targets, this is a new India, this is an India full of self-confidence, this is an India that is working hard to make its resolutions a reality.

And so this India is unstoppable, this India is tireless, this India does not gasp and this India does not give up. And that’s why, my dear family members, with economic prowess our labor force has got new strength, our borders have become more secure than before and the soldiers are minding the borders.

On this auspicious occasion of Independence Day, I extend heartfelt congratulations to my soldiers who are safeguarding the borders of our nation and the uniformed forces responsible for our internal security as I move forward with the address. Our military must be modernized, be empowered, remain youthful, battle-ready, and prepared for war, which is why continuous reforms are taking place within our armed forces.

We used to hear every day about bomb blasts happening here and there. Everywhere, there were signs cautioning people not to touch suspicious bags and announcements were made frequently. Today, the nation is experiencing a sense of security and when the nation is secured, peace is established that helps us realize new dreams of progress. The era of serial bomb blasts is now in the past and the innocent deaths as a result are now part of history. The country has witnessed a significant reduction in terrorist attacks. In Naxal-affected areas too, there has been a major transformation, creating a conducive environment for a major change.

In every aspect of progress, when we move forward with the dream of a developed India by 2047, it’s not just a dream but a resolve of 1.4 billion citizens. To fulfill that resolve, hard work is essential, but our national character is the most significant force. The countries that have progressed, the ones that have overcome challenges, all of them have had a crucial catalyst – their national character. We must further strengthen our national character and move forward. It is our collective responsibility that our nation, our national character, should be vigorous, dynamic, hardworking, valiant, and outstanding. For the coming 25 years, we should follow only one mantra which should be the pinnacle of our national character. We should move forward with the message of living the unity of India and refrain from any language or step which will cause any harm to the unity of India. Every moment, I will continue my efforts to ensure the unity of the country. India’s unity gives us strength.

Be it North or South, East or West, village or city, male or female – all of us contribute to the strength of our country with the spirit of unity and diversity. The second important aspect that I am observing is that if we want to see our country as a developed India by 2047, we must live by the mantra of ‘Shreshtha Bharat’ and characterize it. Now talking about our production, I had said in 2014, “Zero Defect, Zero Effect.” If there’s a “Made in India” product on any table in the world, the world should have confidence that there is nothing better than this. This will be ultimate. Be it our produce, our services, our words, our institutions, or our decision-making processes, everything will be supreme. Only then can we carry forward the essence of excellence.

The third point is that the additional power of women-led development will take the country towards further progress. Today, India can proudly say that if any country in the world has the highest number of women pilots in civil aviation, it’s our nation. Whether it’s the progress of Chandrayaan or the moon missions, many women scientists are at the forefront.

Today with the aim of creating a base of 2 crore Lakhpati Didis, we are working on women self-help groups. We, while promoting the potential of our women power, we are focusing on women-led development. When I put forward the matter of women-led development in the G-20, the whole G-20 group acknowledged its importance. And by acknowledging its importance, they are giving a lot of emphasis on it. Similarly, India is a country full of diversities. We have been a victim of imbalanced development. Some parts of our country have been victims of alienation. Now we must lay emphasis upon regional aspirations for balanced development and give due respect to that spirit regarding regional aspirations. If any part of our Mother India, or our body remains under-developed, then our body will not be considered fully developed. If any part of our body remains weak, then we will not be considered healthy. Similarly, if any part of my Mother India, or even a section of the society remains weak, then we cannot consider my Mother India as healthy and capable. And that’s why we need to address regional aspirations and that’s why we want to move forward in the direction of all-round development of the society, all-round development of every region and to ensure that every region gets an opportunity to reach its potential.

India is a mother of democracy; India is also a model of diversity. There are several languages, several dialects, various costumes, and diversity. We have to move forward on the basis of all.

When I talk about unity, and an incident happens in Manipur, the pain is felt in Maharashtra; if floods grip Assam, Kerala becomes restless. If anything unpleasant happens in any part of India, we feel the pain akin to organ donation. It is our social responsibility to make sure that the daughters of my country are not oppressed. It is our familial responsibility as well as a responsibility of all of us as a country. When copies of Guru Granth Sahib are brought back from Afghanistan, the whole country feels proud. When in any country of the world, during the time of Covid, a Sikh brother of mine sets up langar, feeds the hungry, and the whole world applauds, then India feels proud.

Speaking of women’s respect, recently, I visited a country where a very senior minister asked me a question – “Do your daughters study science and engineering subjects?” I told him that today in my country more daughters than boys are taking up STEM i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It was surprising for him to know that my daughters are taking maximum part in it. This capability of our country is visible today.

Today 10 crore women are involved in women self-help groups and if you go to a village with women self-help groups, you will find bank didis, Anganwadi didis with and didis who distribute medicines. And now my dream is to create a base of 2 crore lakhpati didis in the villages. And now we have new options for the same i.e. science and technology. I can see the potential of the women in our villages and that’s why I am thinking of a new scheme. That will provide training to the sisters of Women Self Help Group with the integration of technology in our agriculture sector thereby strengthening our agritech. We will give skill training to women and train them to operate as well as repair drones. The Government of India will provide drones to thousands of such Women Self Help Groups. We will initiate making drone services available for our agricultural work. To begin with, we will start building 15 thousand Women Self Help Groups which will give flight to the dream of enabling a robust drone training mission.

My beloved family members,

Today the country is advancing towards modernity. Be it Highway, Railway, Airway, I-Ways or Information Ways, Water Ways, there is no such area in which the country is not progressing today. In the last 9 years, we have given a lot of emphasis on development in the coastal areas, tribal areas as well as our hilly areas. We have given strength to these sections of the society by introducing schemes like Parvat Mala, Bharat Mala. We have ensured the work of mainstreaming our rich eastern India with gas pipelines. We have expanded the health infrastructure by sanctioning an increase in the number of hospitals. We have also announced an increase in the number of MBBS seats in medical colleges so that our children can fulfill their dream of serving the nation as doctors. We have laid emphasis on making education accessible to all by recommending imparting education in mother tongues. I sincerely appreciate the stance of the Supreme Court of India who will now be making it possible for the people who go to court to hear the judgment and receive the operative part in their respective mother tongues. The importance of mother tongue is growing in today’s times.

For those villages which are known as Border villages of our country today, we have introduced a program called Vibrant Border Village. The Border Villages of our country were considered as the last village of the country until now. We have transformed the entire thought process. It is not the last village of the country. Those visible on the border are the first village of my country. When the sun rises in the east, the village on this side receives the first ray of sunlight. When the sun sets, the village reaps the benefit of the last ray. This is my frontline village and I am happy that today my special guests in this program are 600 headmen who have come today to be a part of this important program at this historic Red Fort from these first villages, border villages. They have traveled so far for the first time and have joined with new resolve, prowess, vigor and determination.

We envisioned Aspirational District and Aspirational Block to reinstate balanced development and its positive results can be seen today. Today, with the normal parameters of the states, these Aspirational Districts, which were once far behind, have shown better performance. I am positive that in the coming days, our aspirational districts and our aspirational blocks will definitely move forward. As I was speaking about India’s character- first I mentioned India’s unity; secondly, I mentioned that India should focus on excellence, thirdly, I spoke about women development. And today, I want to reiterate one more thing, fourthly Regional aspiration and the fifth important thing is India’s national character and we are moving forward in that direction. Our national character should think about the betterment of the world. We have to make the country so strong that it can play its role for the welfare of the world. And after handling a global crisis like Corona, and the way we stood up as a country to help the world, the result is that our country has now taken the form of a friend of the world.

As an unwavering ally of the world, India has established its identity today. When we talk about global welfare, India’s fundamental idea is to carry that thought forward. I am pleased that on this occasion of August 15th, several esteemed representatives from the US Congress are present among us.

What is India’s perspective, and how do we advance the idea of global welfare? Now, when we think, what do we say? We have presented this vision to the world, and the world is joining us with this vision. We said “One Sun, One World, One Grid” in the field of renewable energy. This is a significant statement from us, and today the world is acknowledging it. After COVID, we told the world that our approach should be “One Earth, One Health”. Solutions to problems will arise only when humans, animals, and plants are equally addressed during times of illness.

We have put forth the concept of “One World, One Family, One Future” for the G20 summit and are working in that direction. As the world grapples with climate crises, we have shown the way and launched the LifeStyle for Environment – Mission LiFE initiative. We formed the International Solar Alliance in collaboration with the world and many countries are now part of the International Solar Alliance. We have emphasized the importance of biodiversity and advanced the establishment of the “Big Cat Alliance”.

For the damage caused to infrastructure due to global warming from natural disasters, there is a need for long-term arrangements. Therefore, we have introduced the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) as a solution. While the world is currently witnessing conflicts in the oceans, we have provided the world with the concept of the “Sagar Platform” which can guarantee global maritime peace. Emphasizing the need for traditional medical practices in mind, we have worked towards establishing a global-level center of the World Health Organization (WHO) in India. Through yoga and Ayurveda, we have worked for global well-being and health. Today, India is laying a strong foundation for global welfare. It is our collective responsibility to build upon this strong foundation.

We have many dreams, clear resolutions, and definite policies. There is no questioning the intention. However, we must accept some truths and work towards their solutions. Therefore, my dear family members, I have come to the Red Fort today to seek your help and blessings, because in recent years, I have understood the nation’s needs and assessed its necessities. Based on my experience, I am saying that we must now address these matters with seriousness. During the ‘Amrit Kaal’ of independence, when the nation celebrates 100 years of freedom in 2047, at that time, the Tricolour should be of a developed India in the world. We must not pause even for a moment, nor should we step back. For this, awareness, transparency, and impartiality are the necessary strengths. We have to provide as much nourishment to this strength as possible.

It should be our collective responsibility to ensure that we can provide it through institutions as a citizen and as a family. And that’s why if we look at the history of the last 75 years, there was no dearth in India’s potential. And why can’t this country, which was once called the ‘golden bird’, rise again with that same potential? Friends, my dear family members, I have an unwavering belief that in 2047, when the country celebrates 100 years of independence, my country will be a developed India. And I am saying this on the basis of the strength of my country, our available resources and particularly trusting the power of youth, of those under 30 years of age. Moreover, I am saying this on the basis of the strength of my mothers and sisters. However, there are certain obstacles in front of it because in the last 75 years certain bad elements have creeped into the society and have become a part of our social system so much so that sometimes we even turn a blind eye toward these. Now is not the time to shut your eyes.

If the dreams are to be fulfilled, the resolutions are to be achieved, then it is the need of the hour to fight the three evils by holding the bull by its horns. Corruption is at the root of all the problems of our country. Like a termite, it has completely eaten away all the systems of the country, and all the capabilities of the country. Freedom from corruption, fight against corruption in every area and in every sector is the need of the hour. And countrymen, my dear family members, this is Modi’s commitment; it is my personal commitment that I will continue to fight against corruption. Secondly, dynastic politics has destroyed our country. This dynastic system had gripped the country and snatched away the rights of the people of the country.

The third evil is appeasement. This appeasement has also stained the original thinking of the country, our harmonious national character. These people destroyed everything. And therefore, my dear countrymen, my dear family members, we must fight against these three evils with all our might. Corruption, nepotism and appeasement; these challenges have flourished which has suppressed the aspirations of the people of our country. These evils rob our country of whatever abilities some people have. These are the things that put a question mark on the hopes and aspirations of our people. Be it our poor, be it Dalit, be it backward, be it Pasmanda communities, be it our tribal brothers and sisters, or be it our mothers or sisters, we all have to get rid of these three evils for their rights. We must create an atmosphere of aversion towards corruption. Just as dirt creates aversion in our minds because we do not like dirt, there can be no bigger filth than this in public life.

And that’s why we must give a new twist to our cleanliness campaign and cleanse our system of corruption. The government is making a lot of efforts to get rid of corruption with the use of technology. You would be surprised to know what was achieved on the ground in the last 9 years in this country. If you listen to the alarming figures, you will realize that Modi takes such steps. I stopped the unfair advantage that nearly ten crore people used to take. Some of you might claim that severe injustice was done to these people; But no, who were these 10 crore people? Alarmingly, these 10 crore people were those who were not even born, and yet many falsely identified themselves as their widows and divyangs and reaped the benefits. Such women upon getting old often became disabled, and thus continued to take false benefits of government schemes. This is the pious task where we were able to stop 100 million such benami activities that had been going on since decades. The property of the corrupt that we have seized is 20 times more than before.

These people absconded after robbing your hard earned money. We confiscated 20 times more property, and hence people’s resentment towards me is very natural. But I have to intensify this fight against corruption. Due to our faulty government system, even if something happened in the eye of the camera, it used to get stuck afterwards. Compared to earlier times, we have now filed many more chargesheets in the court and getting bails is not easy. We are progressing by building such a firm system, because we are earnestly and honestly fighting against corruption.

Today, nepotism and appeasement have brought big misfortune to the country. Now how can this happen in democracy that a political party, and I am giving special emphasis on ‘political party’, has brought such a distortion in the democracy of my country. It can never strengthen India’s democracy. What is that disease: familial politics. And what is their mantra? Party of the family, by the family and for the family. Their life mantra is that their political party belongs to the family, through the family and for the family, Nepotism and partisanship are the enemies of our talent pool. These parties deny capabilities and refuse to accept their competence. And therefore, for the strengthening of the democracy of this country we must liberate ourselves from nepotism. Sarvajan Hitaya Sarvajan Sukhay! Everyone deserves to get their rights. Hence, it is very important to reinstate social justice as well. Appeasement has done the biggest harm to social justice. If someone has destroyed social justice, then this appeasement thinking, appeasement politics. Government schemes for appeasement have indeed killed social justice. And that’s why we realize appeasement and corruption are the biggest enemies of development. If the country wants development, the country aspires to fulfill the dream of 2047 of a developed India, then it is necessary for us that we refuse to tolerate corruption in the country under any circumstances. We should walk forward and onward with this mood.

We all have a very important responsibility. Forcing our next generation to live the way you have lived, is a crime. It is our responsibility to give a prosperous and a balanced nation to our future generation. We should aim to provide a country steeped in social justice, so that our future generations do not have to struggle for small things. It is the duty of all of us, the duty of every citizen, and this era - Amrit Kaal is Kartavya Kaal –an era of duty. We cannot lag behind in our responsibilities; we have to build the India that was dreamt by Mahatma Gandhi, the India that was the dream of our freedom fighters, the India that was the dream of our brave martyrs, our brave women, who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

When I came in 2014, I came with a promise of change. In 2014. I made a promise to you that I will bring about change. And the 140 crore members of my family placed their trust in me, and I made every effort to fulfill that trust. The promise of Reform, Perform, Transform changed into belief because I had promised change. Through Reform, Perform, Transform, I have turned this promise into belief. I have worked tirelessly, I have worked for the country, I have worked with pride, and I have done it with the spirit of “Nation First.” Based on my performance, you blessed me once again in 2019 and the promise of change brought me here. The next five years will be the years of unprecedented development. The next five years are the golden moments to realize the dream of 2047. And next time, on the 15th of August, from this very Red Fort, I will present to you the achievements of the country, your capabilities, the progress made by you, the successes achieved with even greater self-confidence.

My dear loved ones,

I come from amongst you, within your midst and I live for you. If I have a dream, it is for you. If I sweat, it is for you. Not because you have entrusted me with this responsibility, but because you are my family. As a member of your family, I cannot bear witness to any of your sorrows, I cannot bear to see your dreams shattered. I am here to fulfill your resolutions, to stand by you as a companion, to serve you, to be connected with you, to live with you, and to fight for you. I am a person who has embarked on this journey with determination, and I believe that the struggles undertaken by our ancestors for independence and the dreams they had are with us today. The blessings of those who made sacrifices during the struggle for independence are with us. An opportunity has come for the 140 crore citizens of our country, and this opportunity has come with great potential and strength for us.

And therefore, my dear loved ones,

Today, as I converse with you in this ‘Amrit Kaal’, in the first year of the ‘Amrit Kaal’, I want to tell you with complete confidence -

As the wheel of time keeps turning,

The ever revolving cycle of the Amrit Kaal,

Everyone’s dreams are my own dreams,

Nurturing all the dreams, moving steadily, bravely marching, our youth in stride,

With the right principles, forging a new way, setting the right pace, a new path,

Embrace challenges with steadfast courage, elevate the name of the nation in the world.

My family members in every corner of India, my family members in every corner of the world, I once again extend my best wishes to all of you on the auspicious festival of Independence Day! And this Amrit kaal is the time of duty for all of us. This Amrit Kaal is the period for all of us to do something for Maa Bharati. During the war of independence, the generation that was born before 1947 got the opportunity to sacrifice their lives for the country. They did not leave any opportunity to die for the country. But we do not have the opportunity to die for the country. But there cannot be a greater opportunity than this for us to live for the country! We must live every moment for the country and with this resolution, we need to frame a new resolve for fulfilling the dreams of 140 crore countrymen in this ‘Amrit Kaal’. The resolution of 140 crore countrymen needs to be accomplished and when the tricolor will be hoisted in 2047, then the world will be praising a developed India. With this belief, with this determination, my best wishes to all of you. My heartiest congratulations!

Jai Hind, Jai Hind, Jai Hind!

Bharat Mata ki Jai, Bharat Mata ki Jai, Bharat Mata ki Jai!

Vande Mataram! Vande Mataram! Vande Mataram!

Thank you very much!”

Modi tells Congress that U.S.-India ties represent 'defining partnership of this century'

WASHINGTON — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a rousing welcome as he deliver ed a speech to Congress on Thursday, celebrating the growing ties and shared ambitions of the world's two largest democracies.

Modi made the rare address to a joint meeting of Congress on the same day President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will host him for a state dinner, an honor reserved for the closest allies of the U.S.

"Now, when our era is at a crossroads, I am here to speak about our calling for this century," Modi told lawmakers, drawing applause in the House chamber. "I can relate to the battles of passion, persuasion and policy. I can understand the debate of ideas and ideology. But I am delighted to see you come together today to celebrate the bond between world's two great democracies: India and the United States.

"I agree with President Biden that this is a defining partnership of this century," he said. "Because it serves a larger purpose. Democracy, demography and destiny give us that purpose."

While Modi has faced criticism from some U.S. lawmakers and advocates over human rights and his country's reluctance to break with Russia in its war in Ukraine, the Biden administration and leaders of both major parties are unified in their belief that India is a vital ally for Washington's top foreign policy goal — containing the rise of China — and a partner on defense, technology and energy.

Modi — who has dealt with violent clashes with China on the border it shares with India — visited at a time of rising U.S.-China tensions .

"The dark clouds of coercion and confrontation are casting their shadow in the Indo-Pacific," he told Congress. "The stability of the region has become one of the central concerns of our partnership. We share a vision of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

"Now, the United States has become one of our most important defense partners," he said to a standing ovation from lawmakers.

Modi alluded to the "millions" of Americans of Indian origin, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who sat on the dais with him alongside House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. Others in attendance were Indian American members of Congress such as the Progressive Caucus chair, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.; Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., a Biden surrogate; and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., the ranking member of the House's select committee on China.

A letter led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Jayapal, signed by more than 70 Democrats, pressed for Biden to “raise directly with Prime Minister Modi areas of concern” regarding India.

“A series of independent, credible reports reflect troubling signs in India toward the shrinking of political space, the rise of religious intolerance, the targeting of civil society organizations and journalists, and growing restrictions on press freedoms and internet access,” the lawmakers wrote, adding that they seek a discussion about a “full range of issues important to a successful, strong, and long-term relationship between our two great countries.”

Some progressives announced they would boycott the speech, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , D-N.Y. — who said her move was a stance for “pluralism, tolerance and freedom of the press” — as well as Reps. Ilhan Omar , D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib , D-Mich., Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y.

Modi brushed aside criticisms about his record on human rights, treatment of minorities and free speech when he took rare questions from the media at a joint news conference with Biden at the White House.

“India and America — both countries — democracy is in our DNA. The democracy is our spirit. Democracy runs in our veins. We live democracy,” Modi told reporters. “In India’s democratic values, there is absolutely no discrimination, neither on basis of caste, creed or age or any kind of geographic location.”

Before the speech, Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, the co-chairs of the Senate India Caucus, introduced a bill to add India to the list of favored nations for U.S. arm sales under the Arms Export Control Act, alongside NATO members and Australia, Japan, Israel, New Zealand and South Korea.

Part of their goal is to cultivate closer U.S.-India ties that would help New Delhi break its dependence on Moscow for military equipment. The senators hope to add it to the annual defense authorization bill.

“We need to continue to encourage India to align itself with the democracies in the world and not the autocracies,” Cornyn said. “And obviously, history is a big influence here, because since — what, 1947? — the United States has been more aligned with Pakistan, and India was then forced in the arms of Russia. And obviously, they’re very dependent, still, on Russian weapons.”

Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and ranking member Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, called on Biden to "prioritize the elimination of India's significant barriers to U.S. trade and investment on the Indian subcontinent."

Meanwhile, Muslim American activists have organized protests near the White House. Safa Ahmed of the Indian American Muslim Council accused Modi of promoting a "Hindu nationalist ideology" and "anti-minority policies" and criticized Biden's "decision to platform Modi."

The invitation for Modi to speak on Capitol Hill was signed by the top Democrat and the top Republican in both the House and the Senate, who mounted a show of bipartisanship to praise “the enduring friendship between the United States and India.”

"Today," Modi told Congress on Thursday, "we stand at a new dawn in our relationship that will not only shape the destiny of our two nations, but also that of the world."

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the ninth consecutive time, Mr. Modi offered tributes to a galaxy of freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Babasaheb Ambedkar, Veer Savarkar, Bhagat Singh, Jawaharlal Nehru among others.

In India, where people are fighting poverty, we need to fight against corruption with all our might. Corruption and nepotism might come in the way of what the country should achieve in the next 25 years, Mr. Modi said.

In line with the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to wear a white safa with tricolour stripes and a long trail for his 76th Independence Day look.

The August 15 ceremony is particularly significant this year as it marks the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, with the government launching a host of exercises to add to the verve around the celebration.

Here are the latest updates:

PM says ‘Azadi ka Amrti Mahotsav’ has begun and everybody’s effort is required to bring results, calls for ‘Team India’

In India, where people are fighting poverty, we need to fight against corruption with all our might: PM Modi

In India, where people are fighting poverty, we need to fight against corruption with all our might. Corruption and nepotism might come in the way of what the country should achieve in the next 25 years, Mr. Modi says.

“In the last 8 years through Direct Benefit Transfers, we have prevented nearly ₹2 lakh crores that used to fall into the wrong hands. We are trying to create a situation where what has been looted by the corrupt is returned to the country. We are entering a decisive phase of the war against corruption. Corruption is hollowing out the country like termites, I will fight against it. I need the country’s blessings and cooperation to win this war,” he says.

We need to be alert against corrupt as well as corruption, he says. “The situation is such that some people despite being in jail, convicted of corruption, were still socially accepted and extolled. Till that social acceptance is not removed then corruption will not fully go away,” he adds.

PM Modi raises concern over ‘parivaarvaad’ (nepotism), and says there are some people concerned about protecting their ill-gotten wealth. “When I speak of nepotism, I don’t just speak of politics. The tendency of politics has seeped into every institution and sector of society. This directly affects talent in our country. We must create awareness against such nepotism in every institution,” he says.

Dynastic politics is only for the benefit of the dynasty, not the country, he says. “Therefore, we must rid the country of nepotistic thinking and push it towards a merit-based society.”

The PM says it’s his constitutional duty to fight nepotism. “We saw in the recently concluded sports events we did well. It’s not that we didn’t have talent earlier, but transparent selection bereft of nepotism has led to Indian scoring medals,” he says.

Saluting the armed forces, PM Modi says, “For the first time in 75 years, a made-in-India gun has been used for a ceremonial gun salute from Red Fort. Our Jawans should list 300 items which we should stop importing from abroad.”

“I salute children who are saying no to imported toys; when a five-year-old says ‘no videshi’, ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ runs through his veins,” he adds.

Green jobs are also opening up. The space sector has seen the most progressive space policy being in place in India. “Even in the domestic sphere to foster unity, one need to implement gender equality,” he says.

“I cannot keep away from expressing my inner pain- which is, for whatever reason we have developed a distortion in our behaviour and our values in everyday life we insult our women. We must root this out from our society, behaviour, and language. The honour of women is going to be one of the biggest resources for the development of our country,” he says. Respect for Women is important pillar for India’s growth, we need to support our ‘Nari Shakti’, he adds.

WATCH: India’s Prime Minister Modi delivers remarks at joint meeting of Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday pronounced the U.S.-India relationship never stronger and rolled out new business deals with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as human rights activists and American lawmakers questioned the administration’s decision to honor the leader with a pomp-filled state visit.

Watch Modi’s remarks in the player above.

In a joint news conference with Modi, Biden called the relationship between the U.S. and India among the most consequential in the world and “more dynamic than at any time in history.” He underscored how two of the world’s most powerful democracies were cooperating on issues such as the climate, health care and space, saying that the U.S-India economic relationship was “booming.”

But Modi bristled at a reporter’s question about his country’s commitment to democratic values as the country has seen an erosion of religious, political and press freedoms under his watch.

“Democracy is our spirit,” Modi, who rarely takes questions from journalists, said through an interpreter. “Democracy runs in our veins. We live democracy and our ancestors have actually put words to this concept.” He said India has “proved that democracies can deliver and when I say deliver, this is regardless of class, creed, religion, gender.”

Yet Modi has faced criticism over legislation amending the country’s citizenship law that fast-tracks naturalization for some migrants but excludes Muslims, a rise in violence against Muslims and other religious minorities by Hindu nationalists, and the recent conviction of India’s top opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, for mocking Modi’s surname.

Nevertheless, later in an address before a joint meeting of Congress, Modi insisted that in India “diversity is a natural way of life.”

“We are home to all faiths in the world, and we celebrate all of them,” added Modi, in a line that brought many cheering lawmakers to their feet.

The premier’s description runs counter to accusations by rights groups of widespread attacks and discrimination against India’s Muslims and other minorities under Modi.

A group of more than 70 lawmakers wrote to Biden this week urging him to raise concerns about the erosion of religious, press and political freedoms during the visit. At least six Democratic lawmakers —Democratic Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Greg Casar of Texas, Jamaal Bowman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York — boycotted Modi’s address to Congress, because of concerns about his human rights records.

“When it comes to standing up for human rights, actions speak louder than words,” Bush, Tlaib, Omar and Bowman said in a joint statement. “By bestowing Prime Minister Modi with the rare honor of a joint address, Congress undermines its ability to be a credible advocate for the rights of religious minorities and journalists around the world.”

Standing alongside Modi, Biden emphasized that press, religious and other fundamental freedoms should be at the core of how both democracies operate. During their Oval Office meeting, Biden said, he and Modi had a “good discussion about democratic values” while Modi said “there’s absolutely no space for discrimination” when pressed about his own commitment on human rights.

The state visit, just the third of the Biden’s presidency, was certainly a glitzy affair.

Thousands gathered on the White House South Lawn for the welcoming ceremony, listening to performances by violinist Vibha Janakiraman and the a cappella group Penn Masala. As Modi arrived, the crowd — including many members of the Indian diaspora — broke out in a chant of “Modi, Modi, Modi.”

“All eyes are on the two largest democracies in the world, India and America,” Modi said. “I believe that our strategic partnership is important. I’m confident that working together will be successful.”

Later, Modi told Congress that “our partnership augurs well for the future of democracy” as the two countries expand partnerships in defense, semiconductor manufacturing and other industries. He also cheered the “samosa caucus”—the six U.S. House members of Indian descent—and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is Black and of Indian descent, as examples of the impact of the diaspora.

Said Biden: “Since I’ve become president, we’ve continued to build a relationship built on mutual trust, candor and respect.”

EXPLAINER: Here’s what to know about India’s ties with Russia

Biden administration officials say honoring Modi, the leader of the conservative Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, is Diplomacy 101. The U.S.-India relationship will be vital in coming decades as both sides navigate an ascendant China and the enormity of climate change, artificial intelligence, supply chain resilience and other issues.

“On the issues that matter most that will define the future, our nations look to one another including on critical regional and global issues,” Biden said.

Among the announcements made Thursday is an agreement that will allow U.S.-based General Electric to partner with India-based Hindustan Aeronautics to produce jet engines for Indian aircraft in India and the sale of U.S.-made armed MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones.

The Biden administration also is coming out with plans to bolster India’s semiconductor industry. U.S.-based Micron Technology has agreed to build a $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility in India, with Micron spending $800 million and India financing the rest. U.S.-based Applied Materials is announcing it will launch a new semiconductor center for commercialization and innovation in India, and Lam Research, another semiconductor manufacturing equipment company, will start a training program for 60,000 Indian engineers.

On the space front, India will sign on to the the Artemis Accords, a blueprint for space exploration cooperation among nations participating in NASA’s lunar exploration plans. NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization also agreed to make a joint mission to the International Space Station next year.

“We made critical and emerging technologies the pillar of our next generation partnership to ensure these technologies promote and protect our values, remain open, accessible, trusted and secure,” Biden added. “All this matters for America, for India and for the world.”

At the welcoming ceremony, Modi called the Indian diaspora in America — the millions of immigrants and their children from the subcontinent living in the U.S. — “the real strength” of the U.S.-India relationship. He said the honor of a formal state visit — the first in the U.S. for India since Barack Obama honored Modi’s predecessor, Manmohan Singh, in 2009 — reflected the positive impact Indians are having worldwide.

Modi, the son of a tea seller who rose to be India’s premier, also recalled that the first time he visited the White House was three decades ago as a “common man.”

“I have come here many times but today for the first time, the doors of the White House have been opened for the Indian American community in such large numbers,” Modi said to an estimated crowd of 7,000.

Despite the major deals, the visit was shadowed by concerns laid out by rights activists and lawmakers who question Modi’s commitment to democratic principles.

In 2005, the U.S. revoked Modi’s visa to the U.S., citing concerns that, as chief minister of the state of Gujarat, he did not act to stop communal violence during 2002 anti-Muslim riots that left more than 1,000 people dead. An investigation approved by the Indian Supreme Court later absolved Modi, but the stain of the dark moment has lingered.

Biden and Modi have also had differences over Russia’s war in Ukraine. India abstained from voting on U.N. resolutions condemning Russia and refused to join the global coalition against Russia. Since the start of the war, the Modi government has also dramatically increased its purchase of Russian oil.

White House officials note that there are signs of change in India’s relationship with Russia, which has long been New Delhi’s biggest defense supplier.

India is moving away from Russian military equipment, looking more to the U.S., Israel, Britain and other nations. Modi recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and has spoken out about his worries about the potential use of nuclear weapons by Russia.

Modi, before Congress, said the war is “causing great pain” in Ukraine and having residual effects on Europe and beyond.

“This is not an era of war, but it is one of dialogue and diplomacy” Modi said. “And we must all do what we can to stop the bloodshed and human suffering.”

Without specifically naming China, Modi also addressed heightened tensions in the region, saying “dark clouds of coercion and confrontation are casting their shadow in the Indo Pacific.”

Later Thursday, Modi is to attend a lavish White House state dinner in his honor.

Associated Press writers Lisa Mascaro, Fatima Hussein, Stephen Groves, and Ellen Knickmeyer contributed to this report.
