A business plan provides a snapshot of your technology business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

If you’re looking to start a technology business, or grow your existing technology business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your technology business in order to improve your chances of success. Your technology business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a technology business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of technology business you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a technology business that you would like to grow, or are you operating technology businesses in multiple markets?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the technology industry. Discuss the type of technology business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.  

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of technology business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of technology businesses:

  • Network technology : this type of technology company specializes in providing the computers, printers, scanners, and phones within an organization and making sure they are all linked together in order to work seamlessly with one another.
  • Software technology: this type of technology company specializes in providing and/or installing the appropriate software needed for the business. This will include the programs and productivity tools for the organization’s computer network.
  • Customer relationship technology: this type of technology company focuses on providing a customer relationship management system (CRM) that keeps track of all customer interactions and information in order to consistently provide exceptional customer service.

In addition to explaining the type of technology business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of client companies served, number of positive reviews, reaching X amount of client companies served, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the technology industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the technology industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating. 

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your technology business plan:

  • How big is the technology industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your technology business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your technology business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: individuals, small businesses, and local companies that need technological services.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of technology business you operate. Clearly, large companies would respond to different marketing promotions than small businesses, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other technology companies. 

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes technology companies such as Geek Squad, local stores that sell and rehab tech equipment, online technology companies, etc.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other technology businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be technology businesses located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of technology do they provide?
  • What areas do they serve?
  • What type of technology company are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Is your technology business more capable than the competition?
  • Will you provide technology services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide faster technology service?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a technology business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of technology company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to technology services, will you provide computer repair, 24/7/365 service, phone installation, and any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your technology company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your technology business located near an office complex, an urban setting, or a busy neighborhood, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your technology marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Website and SEO marketing
  • Commercials
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising
  • Business networking

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your technology business, including updating technology, client communication and scheduling, marketing, and implementing and installing the new technology for a client.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to obtain your XXth client company, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your technology business to a new location.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your technology business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company. 

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing technologys. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a technology business or are connected to a wide network of professional organizations that frequently utilize technology.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

This IT strategic planning document takes pains to align IT initiatives with the broader business and academic priorities of the institution.

Harvard University's IT strategic plan updates the university's previous plan and sets forth eight new initiatives established by Harvard's CIO Council. To ensure that the IT initiatives reflected university-wide priorities, the report states that a working group interviewed sources across Harvard, including deans and vice provosts. "The collective input became the foundation on which we built the plan," the report asserts.

The current plan also includes an IT mission statement and lists the IT organization's ongoing priorities: information security; enterprise architecture ; shared service model; research computing and research data compliance; IT workforce development; IT procurement and vendor management; change management ; and sustainability and green IT. 3. The goal-setting phase: Who is responsible for what?

Next, decide how your IT strategic plan will filter into actionable projects for different teams to execute.

To drive outcomes, goals need to have owners who will manage their initiatives to completion. These initiatives also need to be aligned with your high-level planning as well as the organization’s broader strategic objectives .

Sound like a difficult balancing act? Not if you take a systematic approach.

Setting your IT goals this way will ensure that actions consistently align with your company’s strategic objectives. You’ll also be able to see if your strategic goals are realistic and within your budget. Once you’re done, go through your table and look for overlapping imperatives, opportunities to streamline execution, and how to prioritize goals.

4. The execution phase: How to get it right

5. The monitoring and adaption phase: Stay on your toes

According to Gartner’s survey of 2,387 CIOs and technology executives, more than half of digital transformation initiatives take too long to execute and more than 50% take too long to realize value.

More local authorities will be given powers to take over buses in their regions as Labour sets its transport “revolution” into motion.

New measures unveiled by Louise Haigh will enable all local transport authorities to run their own bus services, following the models in place in London and Manchester.

The transport secretary says the plans mark the “biggest overhaul to buses in a generation.” The plans will greatly improve levels of bus service and boost declining passenger numbers, according to the Department for Transport (DfT).

Buses in the UK have largely been run by private companies since 1986, when they were deregulated by the Conservative government and sold off by local councils.

London authorities took over their bus services in the city in 2000, setting up Transport for London, while buses have been run by local authorities in Manchester since 2017.

Labour says the package of measures, which come as part of their ‘Buses Bill’, seek to fix “decades of failed deregulation” in the UK, adding that 300 million fewer miles have been driven by buses per year since 2010.

Ms Haigh said: “Buses are the lifeblood of our communities, but for too many people it has become impossible to rely on local services, as routes have been slashed and timetables hollowed out.

“Today is the first stop on our journey to delivering better buses across the country. After decades of failed deregulation, local leaders will finally have the powers to provide services that deliver for passengers.

“And we are taking steps to support local leaders to deliver improved bus services faster and cheaper than ever before.

“With local communities firmly back in the driving seat, our bus revolution will save vital routes up and down the country and put passengers first.”

How would Labour’s plan for buses work?

Proposed guidance from the DfT says that the new powers will give local authorities the powers to decide the “details” of local bus services. This is where they run, when they run and the standards of the services.

The main change Labour’s new legislation will bring in is expanding the number of authorities that are able to run bus services in their region. In 2017, the Bus Franchising Act enabled only mayoral combined authorities to run local bus services, similar to the TfL model.

Of these 11 combined authorities, Manchester was the first to start the process of bus franchising. All areas of the region are expected to be serviced by the authority’s ‘Bee Network’ buses by the end of 2024. Liverpool and West Yorkshire have since followed suit, with franchised services expected to start in 2026 and 2027.

The example of bus franchising in Manchester shows that the process is not a short one. The move was first subject to an assessment from the authority’s transport division, followed by an independent audit.

Consultations than ran from 2020 to 2021, partially disrupted by Covid, with 82 percent of respondents voting in favour. Finally, all ten local authority members of the Manchester combined authority had to vote on the measure, with nine in favour.

All this groundwork means it will have taken seven years from Manchester’s bus franchising announcement to the final rollout of the plans, which was done in three tranches across different regions.

This model will likely lead as an example for other authorities who elect to begin bus franchising in their regions.

Speaker Johnson's government funding strategy is on life support as defections mount

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson’s strategy to tie a short-term government funding bill to a Donald Trump-backed proposal to overhaul voting laws was on life support Monday after a band of conservative rebels vowed to vote no on the package.

Without a stopgap funding bill, money will run out and the federal government will shut down at the end of the month.

Because of the GOP’s razor-thin majority, Johnson, R-La., can afford only four Republican defections if all members vote. At least five Republicans — Cory Mills, of Florida; Matt Rosendale, of Montana; Tim Burchett, of Tennessee; Jim Banks, of Indiana; and Thomas Massie, of Kentucky — say they wouldn’t support the Johnson plan to avert a government shutdown on Sept. 30.

Many other Republicans said they were on the fence.

Johnson is proposing a six-month continuing resolution, or CR, coupled with the so-called SAVE Act, legislation backed by former President Donald Trump that would change voting laws nationwide by requiring proof of citizenship to vote . Trump has called on congressional Republicans to pass the SAVE Act — which Democrats, who control the Senate and the White House, oppose — or allow the government to shut down.

Mills slammed Johnson's strategy as a “farce” and said it would do nothing to secure the southern border.

“If we can’t shut the border down, I’m in favor of shutting the government down,” Mills told reporters.

Rosendale said, “I haven’t supported a CR since I arrived here, and I don’t intend on starting now.”

He dismissed concerns that a shutdown could backfire on Republicans, saying he doesn’t think there ultimately will be a shutdown.

Asked whether his CR plan could pass the House, Johnson replied: “We’ll find out.”

The growing number of defections marked a rough start for Republicans as lawmakers returned to the Capitol from their six-week summer recess.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has said the Johnson plan is dead on arrival in the Senate, and President Joe Biden has vowed to veto the package if it ever gets to his desk.

But with the GOP plan headed for defeat in the House, Democrats may not need to kill it. Instead, they are pushing for a "clean CR" — short-term funding with nothing attached to it.

“The House Republican CR is simply unserious. It’s pure partisan posturing,” Schumer said in a floor speech Monday. “Democrats will do everything we can to avoid a Republican-manufactured shutdown. We are ready to work on a bipartisan bill that will keep the government open. Any extraneous provisions that hinder that goal should be set aside.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., predicted that Republicans will pay a price if they shut down the government.

“I hope the Republicans have learned their lesson that when they shut the government down, the people will punish them,” Raskin said. “And government shutdowns are an enormously wasteful and profligate and self-destructive thing to do. … Donald Trump is coaching them to do it.”
