Synopsis: Santhanam and Tanya Hope are from competing advertising agencies. A love story with this advertising background.

Review: A love story set in an advertising background. Both leads work for opposite companies who try to outdo each other. In between love blossoms between both in Bangkok while Santhanam puts on an act as another person. What happens when the truth is revealed?

Music: the only saving grace of this film. Songs are good and bgm is solid.

Performances: Leads are fine, rest of the cast is irritating to say the least. Especially thambi ramaiah character. Rest of supporting characters roles are minor and have no impact.

Verdict: Story is bland and not engaging at all. Comedy doesn’t click at all. Boring to the core. Dont waste your time. Pls dont waste money. Songs and bgm try to save the film. Thats the only redeeming aspect. I haven’t been so harsh on a film but this deserves it.

Kick Movie Review: An unfunny and trite Santhanam-starrer that is also vile and boring

The opening credits of Kick has a slideshow of really famous products with slight changes in the spelling of the brand. For instance, Frooti becomes Prooti, Liril becomes Eiril, Horlicks becomes Horlocks, and after a point, they run out of ideas, and just mirror-image alphabets to make Hamam look a bit different. While the spelling changes itself is a pretty juvenile attempt at comedy, this mirror-image trick shows a paucity of ideas, and in many ways, the opening credits is a microcosm of the entire film. Kick is overwhelmingly juvenile, downright boring, painfully trite, unnecessarily vile, consistently crass, and worst of all, terribly unfunny.

Thankfully, Kick does have a plot, and it revolves around two ad filmmakers — Santhosh (Santhanam) and Shivani (Tanya Hope) — who are said to be competitors but have never seen each other. While Santhosh gets contracts by hook and crook, Shivani wants her work to speak for itself. When Santhosh taps into Marketing Head Casio’s (a woefully miscast Senthil) weakness for women and wins a particular contract by hoodwinking an aspiring model to dance a seductive number, Shivani loses her cool. She files a case against Santhosh at the ‘Ad Council,’ which is just an excuse to include one more crass and vulgar scene with a double entendre that is less an entendre and more a direct statement. Now, to get out of this conundrum, Santhosh gets into a bizarre series of events that finds him reaching Bangkok to make scientist Vaali (Brahmmanandam) concoct an all-powerful powder that can cure all diseases. You think this is unnecessarily convoluted? Wait till you meet Vaali’s brother Sugriva, who conducts a midget wrestling ring in Thailand, and even worse, what passes off as romance in this disappointing Santhanam. How is this love? What is this love? Why is this love? Where is the love?

While Santhosh, of course, falls in love with Shivani the first time he sees her, she absolutely hates the idea of the existence of such a person. So, he fakes his identity, woos her in Bangkok, makes a fool out of her in Chennai, steals her ideas, insults her intelligence, and yet, she believes Santhosh is not Santhosh but Magizhvan… a name that she herself gives a random person. Even if we sidestep the outlandish concept that two top ad filmmakers in the city have no idea about each other’s existence or how they look, the makers confuse the sheer idiocy of Shivani as her being ‘naive and innocent.’ No, Shivani, you really deserve better… even if you are portrayed as seemingly incapable of thinking a single coherent thought.

If the romance is forgettable at best, the grating comedy is actually a bunch of criminal offences masquerading as humour. Thambi Ramaiah’s MJ flippantly uses rape jokes, and while physically writhing in my seat at the audacity of those lines, the last act of the film decides to trample the concept of consent in its attempt to wring a laugh or two. Firstly, the writing in these portions is banal, and it is not funny at all. If the only good joke in an over 120-minute comedy film is a scene involving a time capsule-looking-porta potty, then it points to the writing going down the drain. Take, for instance, the scene where Shivani’s boss (Manobala) tells her that Magizhvan is not Dr Vaali’s son, but is actually Santhosh. He says, “I am sending you pictures of your Magizhvan, Dr Vaali, and Santhosh and you figure out the truth.” But she has already seen Dr Vaali in person, and believes in the existence of Magizhvan. So why would she look at those three photos and think she has been cheated? Why would that realisation dawn on her? Why does she tear up with a pathos background score to boot? Just why? Why is Shivani… Shivani? And why does Santhosh think he is God’s gift to women? No, Santhosh, when you say, “Ponnungalukku demand panna theriyum, decision edukka theriyaadhu” it isn’t as cool as you think it is. You are pathetic. But of course, things will fall into place for you because you are a Tamil cinema hero.

Lesser said about the dialogues the better because the makers think adult comedy is all about flopping around and saying crass things, or spouting inanities in the name of maintaining a random rhyme scheme. Even if I can move past people rhyming labour with daabar or Water Melon becoming Quarter melon, and objection turning into abortion, I draw a line when someone mishears H2SO4 as Echa soru. Nope. Just nope. The rhymes are pardonable when compared to the sudden changes in character arcs just to further the narrative and bring things to a close. Why does a perenially lusty and caricaturish MJ have a change of heart for exactly one scene that is long enough for him to advice Santhosh to mend his ways? In the very next scene, we see MJ channel his pervertedness like it is nobody’s business. Come on!

The only redeeming factors in Kick are Sudhakar S Raj’s cinematography and the terrific soundtrack courtesy of Arjun Janya. The songs are a lovely audio-visual treat. However, what is the point if there are no laughs whatsoever? As the credits roll, and we see the cast and crew laughing their hearts out while filming Kick , one can’t help but think why didn’t these laughs translate onscreen, only to realise the actual joke was on us.

Naveen Raj, under the umbrella of Fortune Films, produces Santhanam's flick Kick. Prashant Raj, a Kannada director, directed the film. Tanya Hope takes on the role of the female lead. Actors include Ragini Dwivedi, Kovai Sarala, Thambi Ramaiah, Senthil, Mansoor Ali Khan, Brahmanandam, Sadhu Kokila, Muthukalai, and many more. Arjun Janya created the soundtrack for this film, and Sudhakar Raj did the cinematography. Today (September 1), the film is released in theatres worldwide.

Santhanam recently told reporters, "Producer Naveen Raj and director Prashantraj came to Puducherry and narrated the story." I appreciate how the Tamil characters talk in the film. The filming began in Chennai and finished in Bangkok. This is unlike any other film in which I have previously been. This film is built on the notion of a girl and a boy's love ego.

Tanya Hope, the protagonist, is shown riding a horse in a song filmed in Bangkok. Tanya is an expert at horseback riding. The horse, on the other hand, will only listen if you speak Thai. Tanya will be pushed away if she climbs. Then we switched the scenario. Don't confuse this film with DD Returns, a horror comedy. This Kick will be unique. Instead of stating it's a Santhanam film, it should be called Prashant Raj's film."

“Biriyani na piece irukanum, party na girls irukanum.” (If it’s biriyani, it should contain a piece. If it’s a party, there should be girls.)

With this supposedly amazing joke, this Santhanam starrer kicks off. And goes nowhere. For, in 124 minutes, this comedy takes many characters, puts them in unnecessary situations, and makes jokes about them that no one really cares about.

So, what’s Kick about?

It’s about the battle between two ad agencies, with a whole lot of characters going berserk with dialogue and dress. The protagonist is Santhosh (Santhanam), who is supposed to be an ad filmmaker who succeeds using devious means. This is peeving several other ad agencies that are vying for clients. Can the entry of Shivani (Tanya), an ad professional, change things around?

Kick is primarily about a case of Santhosh posing as someone he is not. But how, dear director, did you think that the image of Kovai Sarala wearing a wig, blingy clothes and screeching would elicit laughter? Or Thambi Ramiah dressed like a bandmaster and always dancing, thinking he’s Michael Jackson? And oh, there’s also Brahmanandam playing a scientist. He goes into a toilet and someone thinks he’s entering a time machine!

If the jokes in Kick are juvenile and yawn-inducing, the songs, especially their picturisation, and the action sequences are no different. Why do makers have to insert action sequences needlessly into what they think has great elements of comedy? Or even throw in elements of romance and song-dance sequences when they very well know that the hero’s USP is funny one-liners?

Santhanam, in his avatar as hero, has been selecting some decent subjects. If Gulu Gulu was an experiment, his last film – DD Returns – is said to have done well at the box office. But in this path that he has taken, Santhanam has also picked up some ridiculous comedies that have no value in them. Like his latest film, Kick , in which he makes advertisements, some of which are better than the film itself.

'Thangalaan': Stunning visuals and social commentary, yet missing the emotional core | Movie Review

Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, was one of the most anticipated films of the year, and it’s clear that the buzz was well-deserved. Now that the film has finally arrived in theatres, it can be said with confidence that it lives up to the hype. Thangalaan is a breathtaking visual spectacle, elevated by powerful performances from its cast.

The film is set against the backdrop of a British-led expedition to unearth the gold mines of Kolar. Coloniser Clement strikes a deal with the tribe, led by Thangalaan (Vikram), offering them a share of the gold in exchange for their participation in the excavation.

Thangalaan is not just a mythical action drama; it’s a powerful narrative that tackles a significant social issue—the relentless struggle for power and the oppression of society’s marginalised. The film vividly portrays how the oppressed rise against their oppressors. Thangalaan, the central character, is a figure of immense physical strength and unyielding ambition. His deep-rooted desire to uplift his tribe drives him to make difficult choices, even if it means aligning with the very forces that seek to dominate them, all in pursuit of a better future for his people.

It is great how when a movie talks about something so serious, director Pa Ranjith weaves a mythical narrative into it making the movie more tantalising. Vikram is the undeniable heart and soul of Thangalaan, delivering a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary. As Thangalaan, he commands the screen with a potent mix of intensity and depth, fully embodying a character who is as conflicted within as he is challenged by the external dangers of his quest. Vikram doesn’t just play the role—he lives it, capturing the internal battle of a man torn between his ambitions and the harsh realities he faces. Parvathy, as Gangamma, Thangalaan’s wife, delivers a performance that is both impactful and memorable. Gangamma is far from a mere follower of her husband; she stands as a strong, independent character with her own perspective and influence within the story. Malavika Mohanan plays the role of Aarathi, and she too is fierce and powerful. Her initial few scenes as Aarathi is truly mindblowing.

Malavika Mohanan delivers a fierce and powerful performance as Aarathi, with her initial scenes being particularly striking. Cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar enhances the film, showcasing some truly remarkable visuals. While many scenes, especially those featuring lush greenery and aerial shots, are visually impressive, the sequences set in the mines could have been executed with greater finesse.

Certain parts of the movie, with their mythical elements, evoke a sense of horror, which adds a layer of fun. What’s truly impressive about the film is that it reveals much more beneath the surface. It unfolds like an onion, gradually peeling back layers to reveal deeper complexities.

The film consistently addresses caste politics, exploring the dynamics between the oppressor and the oppressed. Thangalaan's tribe is viewed with contempt by British officers, who exploit their naivety. Throughout the movie, Ranjith delivers a powerful critique of Brahminism and the Varna system. However, he maintains the tribe's dignity by not overtly favouring one side in his portrayal. The movie also explores a parallel theme of the corrupting power of greed. The relentless pursuit of gold, which drives everyone involved, including the tribe, clouds their judgment and distorts their rationality.

Ranjith addresses the issues of Brahminism and Buddhism with a balanced portrayal, presenting perspectives from both sides. Women in the film are depicted as individuals with distinct identities, rather than mere background figures. While the background score is effective, the music could have been more impactful. Given the story's intensity, stronger rhythms and beats might have been more fitting, but music director G. V. Prakash Kumar chose a folk style that, while enjoyable, lacks the power needed for the story.

However, the film falters when it comes to establishing an emotional connection with the characters. It lacks the depth needed for the audience to fully invest in the main characters' journeys. In one particular scene, which impacts Thangalaan and his family, the intended emotional weight falls flat. The effort to create a politically correct narrative seems to have come at the expense of a strong story-driven connection.

Thangalaan stands out as one of Vikram's finest performances, offering him ample scope for acting and showcasing his skills. The first half of the film is deeply engaging, with several edge-of-your-seat moments. While the second half remains thrilling, it occasionally slows down.
