“Most Dangerous Game”

Directed by Phil Abraham

Culture Representation:  Taking place in Detroit, the action drama “Most Dangerous Game” features a predominantly white cast (with some black people, Asians and Latinos) representing the middle-class.

Culture Clash:  A financially desperate man, who’s been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, agrees to participate in a game in which he will be hunted by anonymous people who intend to kill him, but if he’s still alive at the end of the game, he will win $24.5 million.

Culture Audience:  “Most Dangerous Game” will appeal primarily to people who like crime dramas where the action is more important than a well-written screenplay.

The streaming service Quibi (which launched on April 6, 2020) has set itself apart from its competitors by offering only original content, and each piece of content is 10 minutes or less. Therefore, content that Quibi has labeled a “movie” actually seems more like a limited series, since Quibi will only make the “movie” available in “chapters” that look like episodes. The suspenseful drama “Most Dangerous Game” is one of Quibi’s flagship movies that began streaming on the service on Quibi’s launch date.

The title of “Most Dangerous Game” is no doubt inspired by the 1932 film “The Most Dangerous Game” (starring Joel McCrea and Fay Wray), because both have the same concept—people hunting and killing other human beings for sport. In Quibi’s action-filled schlockfest “Most Dangerous Game,” Douglas “Dodge” Tynes  (played by Liam Hemsworth) is the hunting game’s target who agrees to participate in the game out of financial desperation.

Dodge is a real-estate developer in Detroit who’s drowning in debt and is very close to being financially ruined. The main cause of his financial woes is a bad investment that he made by purchasing a run-down, high-rise office building that he hasn’t been able to sell. The building is in such terrible shape that Dodge hasn’t been able to attract tenants, and he doesn’t have the money to make improvements to the building.

Adding to Dodge’s financial pressure: His wife Val (played by Sarah Gadon) is pregnant with their first child. Dodge is such a loving and devoted husband that he serves Val breakfast in bed every morning. But he does keep some secrets from her.

Dodge has been experiencing painful headaches. One day, he’s walking outside when he’s overcome with pain and collapses on a sidewalk. He’s taken to a hospital, where the doctors tell Dodge that he has terminal brain cancer, and the tumor in his brain is inoperable. As he leaves the hospital in despair, a hospital orderly gives him a business card for a company called Tiro Fund. The orderly tells Dodge that the company can help patients like Dodge.

When Dodge tells Val the news about his diagnosis, she’s also understandably devastated. Dodge then confesses to her that he doesn’t have health insurance or life insurance, because he sold his insurance to help pay off some of his business expenses. Dodge’s parents are dead, Val’s parents are broke, and they have no one to turn to for financial assistance.

Is it any wonder that Dodge contacts Tiro Fund to find out what the company can do to help him? The first meeting that Dodge has with Tiro Fund chief Miles Sellars (played by Christoph Waltz, in yet another villain role) is actually shown at the beginning of “Most Dangerous Game,” before a flashback reveals how Dodge ended up becoming a part of this homicidal hunting game.

While meeting in a sleek, ominous-looking office at night, Miles calmly tells Dodge that he can become a multimillionaire if he plays the game right. Every hour that Dodge stays alive during the game, he earns a certain amount of money, and the hourly rate increases every time that he reaches a certain level in the game. If Dodge is still alive at the end of the game, he can win a total of $24.5 million. All of the money will be deposited in a secret offshore account in Dodge’s name that Dodge can monitor to verify that the deposits are being made on an hourly basis.

According to Miles, the hunters in the game are “elite, wealthy clientele,” who “hunt to kill” and who “want desperate humans” to hunt. Dodge won’t know what these hunters look like (they can be any race or gender) until the hunters reveal themselves to him when they attack. Dodge won’t know in advance how many of them will be hunting him. They can ambush Dodge, and it’s also possible that more than one hunter will go after him at the same time.

There are certain rules to the game: The hunters can use any weapons except guns while trying to kill Dodge. Dodge cannot leave Detroit city limits or else the hunt can go on for as long as he’s alive. And (not surprisingly) Dodge can’t tell anyone about this game.

Miles convinces Dodge that even if Dodge dies during the game, Dodge can still make enough money to financially take care of Val and their unborn child for several years. And all of that is enough to convince a desperate Dodge to agree to participate in the game, although he doesn’t come to that decision right away. He decides to go through it after a sought-after “last chance” business investor rejects Dodge’s proposal to invest in Dodge’s debt-ridden dud building.

The rest of “Most Dangerous Game” is basically a series of chases and violent attacks—some more believable than others. Dodge just happens to have a background as a star athlete—he was a prize-winning runner when he was in school—so it explains why he has much higher stamina in the chase scenes than a regular guy would have. But even with this athletic prowess, it’s a bit of a stretch to see Dodge do the type of stunts that he does in “Most Dangerous Game,” which clearly wants people to be wowed by the action and ignore all the problems in the screenplay.

“Most Dangerous Game” (written by Nick Santora and directed by Phil Abraham) is strictly B-movie material. The hunters who go after Dodge each has an alias that’s the name of a former U.S. president. The other hunters who try to kill Dodge are nicknamed Nixon, Reagan, Carter and LBJ. The less you know about what they look like in advance, the better the surprises are when they reveal themselves to Dodge.

However, one of the dumbest aspects about “Most Dangerous Game” is that the hunters, who are supposed to be “anonymous,” do nothing to disguise their faces when they attack Dodge in public (which is where they usually go after him), sometimes in crowded areas. And in a big city like Detroit, there are plenty of security cameras around, which is something the “Most Dangerous Game” creators want viewers to forget during the big fight scenes.

Some of the dialogue is so bad that it’s laughable. For example, in one scene, the hunter nicknamed Carter tells Dodge in the middle of a fight that he named himself after Jimmy Carter because “I like his work with Habitat for Humanity.” It’s actually one of the funnier lines in “Most Dangerous Game.” And the tone of the acting in “Most Dangerous Game” is uneven. Hemsworth acts like this is a serious drama, while Waltz seems to understand how cheesy this story is and injects some campy humor in his acting.

While the appropriately nicknamed Dodge is running around town, trying not to get killed, Val begins to notice large amounts of money being deposited to Dodge’s bank account. Wasn’t the money supposed to go into a secret offshore account? “Most Dangerous Game” has too many inconsistences and plot holes to mention.

Val enlists Dodge’s best friend Looger (played by Zach Cherry), who’s a bar owner, to help her find out what’s going on, because at this point she’s figured out that Dodge (who hasn’t come home) is in deep trouble and involved in something illegal. Val and Looger foolishly go to the bank branch where Dodge has the account and to try to discover who’s behind the mystery deposits, but Val and Looger only end up looking suspicious themselves. Looger and Val leave the bank in a hurry when the desk worker they’ve been speaking to offers to get the manager for them.

What happened to the idea that the money was supposed to go to a secret offshore account? That plot hole is never explained. As the Val character, Gadon doesn’t have much in-depth acting to do in “Most Dangerous Game,” since she’s playing a typical “worried wife” role that has become a predictable stereotype for male-oriented action stories. Looger is also very loyal to Dodge, but he’s another supporting character that doesn’t have much depth.

Miles has a creepy henchman named Connell (played by Aaron Poole), who “conveniently” shows up at the hunters’ crime scenes to clean up messes and get rid of evidence, so that the game can stay “secret.” Meanwhile, Tiro Fund headquarters is decked out with a lot of hi-tech computer equipment that tracks Dodge’s whereabouts at all times (such as showing which streets he’s on), regardless if he’s in a car, on a bus, on a train, on a ship or on foot.

It’s never explained how they’re able to keep track of Dodge in such an extremely precise way, since he does not have his phone with him at all times. But many things in “Most Dangerous Game” are illogical, including the ludicrous twist at the end. “Most Dangerous Game” has some unintentional laughs because there are so many badly written parts of the story. If you don’t care about a good screenplay and just want to see Hemsworth in a lot of scenes involving chases and fights, then this type of mindless entertainment might be for you.

Quibi premiered the first three chapters of the 15-chapter “Most Dangerous Game” on April 6, 2020.

'Most Dangerous Game' Review: A gripping thriller that proves Quibi's idea to create snackable content works

Spoilers for 'Most Dangerous Game'

Five episodes of 'Most Dangerous Game' total up to roughly 37 minutes of runtime. Now, that is redefining the way we consume content. Conventionally, an average film runs for roughly two-and-a-half hours, and an episode in TV series touches close to an hour.  This whole concept of Quibi's 'Stories in chapters' makes the Liam Hemsworth-starrer a crisp and a pacy affair. These five episodes essentially serve as Act I dished out in seven to ten-minute installments.

The storyline is pretty simple with the trailer already establishing a major chunk of the details. Dodge Tynes (Liam Hemsworth) is a failing man drowning in debt. To make matters worse, his wife, Val (Sarah Gordon) is pregnant and Dodge is diagnosed with terminal cancer.  He now needs to make sure Val isn't left high and dry in terms of money in whatever days he's got left.

Miles Sellers (Christoph Waltz) is the president of a company called the Tiro Fund. And he's on the lookout to help people in need. Except, there's a catch. It is revealed he is in touch with a wealthy clientele who pay some major moolah by putting people in need of help in what is one of mankind's intense sport — Hunting. It is easy to predict what goes on next, but this is made up for with some high-octane storytelling. There's a sense of urgency in the way the plot unfolds and that adds to the pulsating factor.

Episode 1: 'The Offer'

Set in  Detroit, the episode opens with Dodge meeting Miles as they ponder on the former's grim future. There's a bit of a backstory about how Dodge lands up to where he is. There's no hiding he's in a desperate situation and he needs monetary help. 'The Offer' is just what the title says.

"I can do it with your participation," says Miles when Dodge asks him for some financial help. It is revealed then that Miles acts as a facilitator.  Waltz shines as the man who nonchalantly details out how Dodge would be needed to be hunted in order to be paid more handsomely, while Hemsworth can be seen practically turning white and seething within.  So convincing is Waltz that at some point it makes sense. "You could leave your family millions," he says.

'The Offer' is primarily a two-men conversation and it sets up the series quite artfully. As far as the tone goes, it's a lot of black and grey and that predominantly has to do with the storyline.

The opening credits give off the 'Bloodsport' red style of titling to add a rather menacing touch, might we say.

Episode 2: 'The Motivation'

Considering there isn't much time left where minor plot points can be added, 'The Motivation' serves as the flashback episode where Dodge is known for his running exploits. It is hard to imagine such a jacked and tough-built character would actually be suffering from a terminal disease.  The chapter is all about the doting husband Dodge is. There are new characters introduced and one of them is Zach Cherry as Looger, Dodge's best pal since childhood.

'The Motivation' ends with the first signs that Dodge is suffering some a serious health condition. It's easy to see why this narrative had to come second as Quibi and the series, in particular, have taken the unconventional route. Much like Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible III'. e\Except here, Dodge isn't bleeding.

most dangerous game movie review 2020

Episode 3: 'The Rules'

It is revealed that Dodge has glioblastoma, an aggressive tumor in his brain. And is inoperable. Nick Santora's teleplay makes sure the foot is not taken off the pedal as the storyline moves at a quick pace. The Tiro Fund gets a quick introduction and amidst anger, frustration, and sadness, Dodge still decides to see what the organization has to offer. The scene then shifts back to the pilot episode's conversation between Miles and Dodge.

Circumstances in a way pan out that this sport is tailor-made for Dodge. A runner on the run so as to not be hunted. Rules are simple: No timeouts, no do-overs and all he has to do is to dodge the hunters (Pardon the pun). 'The Rules' just starts the intensity engine as Miles meticulously outlines the rules, the results of what would happen if the rules are violated, and the money factor that comes with it.

Episode 4: 'The Acceptance'

Time's ticking for Dodge as the suspense element is cranked up by Santora in this episode. Waltz steals the show as a character who can effortlessly switch from being a facilitator to someone who has a profound respect for Dodge and the nature of the challenge.

Nerves become an integral part of 'The Acceptance'. We've seen different emotions from Dodge, and it's easy to see Hemsworth's character quiver in his boots as game time nears. The final minutes see the game start and Dodge bent on one thing: Survival.

Episode 5: 'The Start'

The best line probably is when Miles tells a petrified Dodge: "There are three F's kid, Flight, fight and freeze. The third one gets you killed". The panic is clear as crystal as we see Dodge combat doubt and uncertainty at every turn. His first move is to get on a bus only to panic harder. Meanwhile, Val discovers money trickling into Dodge's account. And it only gets more as he survives the hour.

'The Start' keeps you at the edge of your seats as the storytelling pace doubles up. And ends abruptly just when we see Dodge planning his next move.

(With the chapters releasing on a daily basis, this recap and review will be updated episode-wise)

Most Dangerous Game (2020): Season 1 Review

Most Dangerous Game (2020): Season 1 Review

Synopsis: A man (Liam Hemsworth) desperate and in debt. In a dystopian thriller where the hunter turns out to be the hunted. Game on. Format: All episodes streaming now on Quibi.

Cast:  Liam Hemsworth, Christoph Waltz, Sarah Gadon, Chris Webster, Zach Cherry, Aaron Poole, Jimmy Akingbola, Billy Burke

Directors:  Phil Abraham Writers:  Scott Elder, Josh Harmon, Richard Connell, Nick Santora

I’ll admit, I didn’t have as much of a negative impression on Quibi as a service as most did when I learnt about it. The trailer for Most Dangerous Game , a ‘film-in-parts’ had me gripped from the outset.

Most Dangerous Game is the newest of a long long list of adaptations based upon Richard Connell’s 1924 short story “ The Most Dangerous Game. “

A terminally ill Dodge ( Liam Hemsworth ) has a short time left to live. With a mountain of debt and nothing to leave his pregnant wife Val ( Sarah Gadon ), he gets tempted into contacting a mysterious agency he’s told that helps people in dire situations.

This is where he meets Miles Sellers ( Christoph Waltz ) who seemingly knows everything about him and offers him a substantial amount of money per hour for every hour he participates in a Hunt. However Dodge is the target, and it’s a hunt to the death. The hunt lasts 24 hours and the only rule is it’s limited to melee only.

One of the major negatives I took away from this. Is that the plot isn’t exactly original, being an adaptation that can’t be helped. But on the other hand, seeing the same tropes played out was a bit tiresome and the ending comes rather abruptly and without much resolution.

most dangerous game movie review 2020

Now being on Quibi, it had a tough design brief, in that no episode had to go longer than 10 minutes. I believe that this hit the mark, each of the 15 episodes had terrific pacing and not a single one felt like filler. They all progressed the story in meaningful ways and constantly left you wanting more.

Could it have worked cut as a full 120 minute or so feature? I’m not so sure, it likely would have felt the pacing as too rushed, but it definitely takes full advantage of the Quibi platform to its maximum potential for this type of content.

Is this film/chapter/show, worth subscribing to Quibi for? Well, with a 90-day free trial, I can’t see any reason not to. It ticks all the possible boxes I could have wanted from something on the platform, such as a stellar cast, great acting and well shot for the format. But go into it knowing from the select other shows I’ve watched on the platform, this stands head and shoulder above the rest.

Exciting and Stressful

Family show, what's the story.

In MOST DANGEROUS GAME, Dodge Maynard ( Liam Hemsworth ) is working his way out of a mountain of debt before the birth of his first child. When he is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and receives a terminal diagnosis, he can't even afford medical treatment in the final weeks of his life. Then he meets a mysterious man ( Christoph Waltz ) who offers to pay him to participate in an event where he is hunted for sport.

Is It Any Good?

Richard Connell's 1924 short story about big game hunters who tire of tracking animals and shift their focus to a human has been adapted numerous times over the last 100 years, and it often feels relevant and exciting. The premise of Most Dangerous Game has that near mythological feel of classic horror, and the creators of this version have smartly changed the setting from the wild to the city and made the story into an allegory about wealth inequality in America. They also have a pair of excellently cast stars in Hemsworth and Waltz.

All adaptations, from the 1932 film to the 1994 Ice-T vehicle Surviving the Game , deal with the challenge of delivering on the promise of a great premise. This patient, confident version appears to be up to the challenge, and while it may not be a classic in its own right, it has a decent shot at pulling it off.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the ethics of the classic story behind Most Dangerous Game . What are the motivations of the person setting up the hunt and the hunters? Why do they choose a particular person to act as prey?

This story has been filmed a number of times. What do you think is different about this version? What's similar?

How would you feel about Dodge's choice if you were his wife? His child? His friends? Why? Do you think he is making the right choice to participate in the hunt? Why or why not?

Where to Watch ‘Most Dangerous Game’ Starring Liam Hemsworth

  • Most Dangerous Game

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Self Reliance’ on Hulu, Jake Johnson's Foray Into Lightly Surreal Indie Comedy

Stream it or skip it: 'command z', steven soderbergh's amusing bite-size sci-fi satire series, stream it or skip it: 'most dangerous game: new york' on the roku channel, a rock-solid manhunt drama that survived the quibi meltdown, stream it or skip it: 'the consultant' on prime video, where christoph waltz is a mysterious consultant who takes over a tech firm after a tragedy.

Who doesn’t want to watch an action thriller pitting Liam Hemsworth against a malicious mastermind played by Christoph Waltz? That’s exactly what Most Dangerous Game   is—and whether or not people wanted to watch it when it dropped in 2020 is beside the point. People probably didn’t know it existed, because it was released on the short-lived, mobile-only streaming service Quibi. Remember Quibi? Turns out launching a streaming service designed to be watched on the go when you don’t have a lot of time during a pandemic that left everyone at home with nothing but time wasn’t a smart idea. And because of that, even Hemsworth superfans may have missed this series.

That’s all changing. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to stream Most Dangerous Game (along with lots of other Quibi content) on Roku Channel. But when will Most Dangerous Game debut on Roku? And which other Quibi shows are coming to the Roku Channel? Here’s what you need to know.

Where to watch Most Dangerous Game starring Liam Hemsworth

Most Dangerous Game will premiere on the Roku Channel on Thursday, May 20, along with a slate of programming now branded as Roku Originals.

All of these originals, however, lived a previous streaming life last year on the short-lived mobile streaming platform Quibi . Roku acquired the streaming rights to Quibi’s original content back in January, and the first wave of originals will debut on the Roku Channel on May 20. You’ll be able to stream Most Dangerous Game via the Roku Channel on your Roku, or via the Roku app available on Apple TV or Amazon Fire. You can also stream the series online .

Will there be a Most Dangerous Game Season 2 on Roku?

You’ll definitely be wondering this once you finish up Season 1—and with good reason! Quibi actually ordered Season 2 last summer. Production never started, of course, because Quibi shut down for good a few months after that. But with the show now branded a Roku Original, it seems possible that it’s now up to Roku to decide whether or not they want to put money into continuing any of these ex-Quibi shows. The best way to get Roku to greenlight a new season of Most Dangerous Game is to binge it, tweet about it, and tell all your friends about it.

How will Most Dangerous Game 2020 be presented on Roku now that it’s not on Quibi?

That’s the question, isn’t it? After all, all of Quibi’s content was designed to be viewed either horizontally or vertically, depending on how you happened to be holding your phone at the moment. Additionally, all Quibi content was presented in 3-15 minute chunks, which is kinda short for an episode of an action/thriller show like Most Dangerous Game . But, as Roku has revealed, all of the series will be presented in 1080p and presented horizontally (which, TBH, was how a lot of Quibi’s content was presented originally). Additionally, Roku will group multiple episodes of Quibi series together to form longer episodes, with ad breaks coming in between what were originally episode breaks.

Which Quibi shows will be available to stream as Roku Originals on May 20?

Here’s the lineup of Quibi content coming to Roku first. The rest of the Quibi shows will roll out in upcoming weeks.
