The Role of Being an Older Sister

One of the last things my grandpa ever told me, as I was standing with my younger sister, was to “take care of each other.”

Of course, this statement left me with a plethora of unanswered questions.

Why did he choose this to be the last thing he told me? My grandpa was a man of very few words, so when he spoke, people listened. That is why these five words meant the world to me, and because of his words, my perception of what it meant to be an older sister changed as I entered high school.

Originally, I didn’t want to be an older sister. I was the star of the family- not only am I my parents’ first child, I was the first grandchild for both of my grandparents, and first niece for all of my aunts and uncles. The wall of pressure to maintain a marker of success was slowly built, brick by brick, after each birth of my two siblings, and eventually nine cousins.

Was this pressure pushed upon me by my adult family members, or by myself? Being the eldest sibling holds enough responsibility on its own, but being the eldest daughter carries a level of duty and dependability that being an eldest son does not. I am the built-in babysitter of my family and the example in school for my siblings to follow.

Why is being an eldest daughter so different from being an eldest son? Why was my experience of growing up with younger siblings so different from my male classmates with younger siblings?

It is scientifically proven that a child’s personality directly corelates with the birth order and gender of the children in their family. In the novel “The Eldest Daughter Effect,” Lisette Schuitemaker and Wies Enthoven explore birth order, and the effects of being the oldest sibling in a family, specifically targeting the journey and challenges of being an older sister.

After interviews and surveying eldest daughters, they had compelling results. Eldest daughters commonly grow up to be ‘people pleasers’ and perfectionists. Consequently, this phenomena affects all relationships an eldest daughter will have, even past their life of living at home with their parents and siblings.

Societally, matriarchs or older women are usually tagged as caregivers, or the heart of the familial center. Therefore, consciously or unconsciously, parents push a version of this pressure onto their eldest daughters.

Furthermore, older siblings are the easiest family members for a younger sibling to follow. They are old enough to set a good example, but young enough to be respected as one would respect a friend.

That is a BIG responsibility. Especially for older sisters. Not only do you have to set a good example academically, you have to be a good role model in a society of extreme body expectations and standards.

I have a younger sister, and as I have gotten older, being a body positive role model for her has slowly become important to me. I had to navigate middle school drama, self esteem issues, and social media influence without an older sister’s example to follow. So I wanted to give the support to my younger sister that I never had.

This isn’t to say that young boys don’t experience a similar phenomenon, but girls experience an extreme amount of expectations that boys do not.

Being a ‘good’ older sibling is different for every family dynamic. Being a good older sister, to me, is promoting a healthy mind and body and highlighting the importance of good mental health and self esteem.

As I grow older, and bloom into my older sister role, I have begun to understand, and almost appreciate the responsibilities that come with it. I am proud to have been given this opportunity to help my younger siblings grow into beautiful people. I love being an older sister, and all of the responsibilities that come with it.

What a wonderful article! I am the grandmother of a young lady who just became stepsister to two boys and half sister to another boy. She is the oldest by a year. I already see these characteristics developing – she is a people pleaser; she watches out for the 3 year old; she’s caring. It is nice to know this is a role she will come to enjoy.

“Your sister has autism.”

I have learned that life is not all about me. I realized that I need to focus on others, especially those who are most in need, like my sister.

Those four words changed my life.

In the fall of 2015, my parents, my two sisters and I gathered around our kitchen table. My sisters looked perplexed. My mother’s lips were trembling. She struggled to say the words. After, there was silence. Salty drops were running down my cheeks. The words that my mother spoke went through me like a bullet. I still hear those words every day. Now, though, they give me purpose, whereas before they left me devastated.

During the last 18 months, my love for my 12-year-old sister Magdaleny has grown stronger and stronger. I have learned that life is not all about me. I realized that I need to focus on others, especially those who are most in need, like my sister. I knew that it was not going to be an easy task, but I was determined to support her.

Opportunity found me quickly. One day, in a public library in Bloomington, the librarian finished asking me for the personal information needed to get a library card. Then he asked my sister for the same basic information. She stayed quiet when the librarian asked her date of birth. She didn’t say a word; she panicked. That’s when I knew that I had to step in and say, “June 22, 2004.”

The librarian said, “Thank you,” and gave me a confused smile. When I looked at Magdaleny, she seemed to be embarrassed, staring at her hands and not making eye contact with the librarian or me. My heart dropped. My sister did not know what she had or how her disability affected her, but I was there to help her with her communication skills and behavior.

I’m still helping her today.

I work with her interests and talents, focusing on what she can do rather than what she can’t. Her behavior at home can be hard to handle. She often acts like a toddler, demanding to be in control. During these times, I help her understand that “no” is an OK answer, and that there is no need to be frustrated. It’s tough, but I won’t give up. I believe God meant my autistic sister to be a way for me to learn my purpose in life. I know God allowed me to open my heart and understand that my mission is to serve others.

Importantly, that mission includes the poor. When I was growing up in Mexico, there wasn’t enough money for food and housing, and certainly not enough for the medical care my sisters and I needed. My father had to leave the family and go to the United States to earn money for our care. That’s when I realized that there’s no health care if you’re poor.

These two life experiences, my sister’s autism and growing up poor, have inspired me to become a pediatrician. I want to support families, especially those with infants and those who can’t afford medical care. I want to bring hope to families in developing countries. My dreams will bring challenges, and it won’t be easy. But courage, faith and knowledge are the values that will keep me going. I have Magdaleny to thank for that.

Like the average teenager, who seeks the perfect person to look up to, I longed to have someone in my life inspire me so that I may do what pleases myself as well as my loved ones. A role model is a person who someone admires and whose behaviour they try to copy. From all the people I could choose to be my role model, I always thought that my sister would fit best. In her essay, she had discussed how ‘family’ has shaped and influenced her: “Our relationship signifies a greater meaning of unity, obedience, and respect because we collaborate effectively, and live tranquilly. Sometimes family relationships are hard to maintain. There might be family disputes but in the end, we always love each other.” It took me a while to see that this was about us. It is through her essay that I finally got to connect with her and have the same relationship that we used to have. I held on to this since the moment she left for college.

As a sixteen-year-old who has lived in three countries and has been to sixteen countries, I am truly lucky to say that my actions and decisions have been influenced by many opportunities and challenges. Sometime during my junior year, I realized that I am capable of creating a future that I would like rather than follow my sister’s path, step-by-step. I received the chance to apply to a program for students planning to pursue a career in the medical field. Once I applied and was accepted, I was sure I wanted to proceed along my path and not my sister’s. The Practicum in Health Science program that I am in right now, has made me open up my eyes to all the new possibilities that are waiting for me in this life. Success here requires dedication and open-mindedness, and I feel better prepared for college and for what comes after.

At the end of the day, your college essay needs to be a genuine reflection that tells the admissions committee who you are and why they should admit you.

If your own relationship with your sibling(s) does that for you, then go for it. If not, consider another topic that does.

Dos and don’ts when writing about siblings in your college essay

Once you’ve determined whether you should write about your siblings, you’re likely asking how you should write about them. Consider the following advice before you begin writing your essay.

Do write about a memory or tradition that significantly shaped who you are.

One way to write a successful essay about siblings is to hone in on a specific memory or tradition.

Focusing on a specific event gives your admissions officer insight into what your life has actually been like. It’ll also help keep you on track and prevent you from going on too many tangents.

You can set the scene through your language and extract broader meaning from those special moments with your sibling.

The key is that the memory or tradition has to have had a concrete and prominent effect on who you are today. Otherwise, why write about it?

You could write about how you and your sister are renowned tennis stars, how you hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with your three siblings, or how yearly Groundhog Day celebrations with your brother led to your interest in physics.

Choose a memory or tradition that molded your values or dramatically changed something about you.

Do explain how a specific part of you exists because of your sibling.

Another effective approach is to explain how your sibling directly influenced you.

Beware of focusing too much on your sibling. But sometimes the only way we can truly explain who we are is by discussing the events or people that affected us.

If your sibling’s personality, activities, or behavior made you into who you are today, then this approach may be for you.

Probably the most common version of this essay is about sibling competition. Students like to write about how they have always competed with or lived in the shadow of a sibling. This approach can sometimes work, but it’s a common topic that tends to be too negative, so you may consider alternatives.

Better methods might include: identifying an impactful activity you did together, reconciling different beliefs, or analyzing how your personality developed in response to theirs.

Whichever approach you choose, try to avoid the following common mistakes.

Don’t write a college essay about how great your siblings are.

Your college admissions essay isn’t Yelp. Don’t just write a glowing review of your sibling rather than a college essay about yourself. Your sibling should not be the main character of your essay. You should.

Your essay also shouldn’t provide a simple or generic explanation of why you love, hate, admire, etc. them.

Think about it: does an essay on those topics actually advocate for you to be admitted? Likely not. That’s why it’s important that your essay is, at its core, about you.

Don’t get lost in negative emotions.

While you may have been negatively impacted in some way by your sibling, your college essay isn’t a burn book, either. And its goal isn’t to get your sibling into (or out of) college.

Your college essay needs to serve you.

While it’s okay to explore the darker sides of life in a college essay, you don’t want to write something that ultimately leaves your admissions officer with a negative taste.

You want them to envision you as a happy, engaged college student. However you write about your relationship with your sibling should, in the end, help your admissions officer to make these positive connections.

Final Thoughts

College essays about siblings don’t always work in your favor. They can be too much about your sibling, too superficial, or filled with too much emotion that doesn’t serve a clear purpose.

So if you’re going to write about your siblings, make sure that you are doing so because it is the best way to tell the admissions committee about you.

What it’s actually like to go to college with your sibling.

About two years ago, right after I had moved on to campus at the beginning of my sophomore year, I received a flurry of texts from my younger sibling Katherine, a high school senior. A picture flashed across my screen of Katherine jumping in the air with a piece of paper in her hands. “I got in,” read the following text. My sister had officially been accepted to Wake Forest University, the same college that I currently attend.

Living on the same college campus with my sibling has undoubtedly had its ups and downs. For anyone else that has found themselves in a position like mine, or for those who are just curious, here is a list of my findings from a year of going to college with my younger sister.

1. It’s Like Having a Built-in Support System

Having Katherine with me at Wake Forest also allowed me to share some of my favorite things about my college with her. I gave her the inside information on the best studying spots, how to avoid the busiest times in the cafeteria and the words to all the chants at football games. Getting to pass down Wake traditions brought us closer together and was just plain fun.

Since I had already been through the tough experience of acclimating to college, I was able to serve as a source of support and advice for Katherine. As anyone who has gone away to college can attest, it can be a difficult, and sometimes lonely, process. I was glad that I was able to help my sister with any questions she had about Wake, especially since I didn’t have an older sibling looking out for me my freshman year.

2. It’s Important to Have Separate Spheres

Since college is a key time for exploration, experimentation and finding out one’s interests, siblings need to situate themselves in their own individual niches. Joining different clubs, starting unique hobbies and running in different circles is extremely beneficial for both siblings.

As the older sister, I must admit, I’m protective over Katherine. No one wants to see their younger sibling make bad friend choices or watch them be academically irresponsible. But ultimately, taking a generally hands-off approach will be best for both you and your sibling, unless they ask for help.

So, a piece of advice for anyone who has a sibling as an incoming freshman: Let them figure most things out for themselves. The only way you can figure things out in life is through trial and error, so let them make some mistakes. Trust me, they’ll turn out better in the long run because of it. Plus, you’re not their parent, so it’s not your job to boss them around, even if you are the older sibling.

3. Yes, They’re Still Going to be Annoying Sometimes

It doesn’t matter the age difference or how close you are to one another, it’s a fact of life that siblings get on each other’s nerves. This still applies when you go to college with your sibling.

Although we’re technically adults, Katherine and I fought over petty things. As sisters who wear basically the same size in clothing, we fought over who borrowed whose clothes without the other’s permission. We bickered over who got to use which car at what time. I got upset when she tried to get me to do her homework, while she got angry when I interfered in her personal life.

Becoming a big sister is probably one of the best gifts I have ever received, it is even better than the Elmo toy that sings old country songs. Becoming a big sister automatically gave me a lifelong best friend. One important lesson I've learned being an older sister is that my relationship with all of my siblings is a lifelong one. This sounds obvious, but I find that when things get really bad with sibling relationships, we often forget that there is no reason to be mad at your sibling for a long period of time because your relation to them will never change. I understand some siblings grow apart, but you will always be family. Whether we're in a good place or a bad place, we will always be siblings, whether we like it or not, so it's pointless to give up on each other.

Having younger siblings does not mean that they follow in your footsteps and learn from your mistakes and triumphs, but rather you both learn from each other’s struggles and successes. I've learned that we benefit most when we learn from each other, instead of having our relationship function as a one way street. This is a mistake I admittedly have made many times, and something I believe strengthens my relationship with all of my siblings is when we talk about it.

Becoming an older sister is the definitely the best thing to ever happen to me. Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.

The Norse cosmos began with two worlds, Niflheim and Muspellheim. These two worlds, the worlds of primordial cold and fire , were separated by a great fissure called Ginnungagap. The waters from the well Hvergelmir, at the center of Niflheim, by many rivers flowed into Ginnungagap and "when those rivers, which are called Elivagar, came so far from their source, the poisonous flow hardened like a slag of cinders running from a furnace, and became ice. ...Then layer by layer, the ice grew within Ginnungagap" (Byock 13). The northernmost regions of the gap filled with hoar frost and rime, but the southernmost were "the regions bordering on Muspell [and] were warm and bright" (Byock 13). Where the cold of Niflheim's ice and the warmth of Muspellheim's fire met in Ginnungagap the ice thawed, and "there was a quickening in these flowing drops and life sprang up" (Byock 14). Younger sibling advantage

It's kinda petty but it also sucks that they get all the free advantages (at least in my case).

Keeping details vague because I don't want to put large chunks of my resume on here. I have a brother in 9th grade.

- I'm a club coach and TA, after being part of the club and class for years. Guess who automatically gets free access to leadership roles in 9th grade.

- I picked up a relatively obscure instrument for band/ orchestra before middle school. He chooses the same instrument. I ask why, he says "so I can beat you at [instrument] just like I beat you at piano", and then immediantly denied that was the reason when our parents asked.

- For both piano and this instrument, I started with cheap teachers. When he started, my parents found the best private teachers in the area for that instrument. To be fair, he is more musically talented but still.

- I have A+ for all my classes except for one B with an extremely difficult history teacher. My brother now knows to avoid him. If I knew I would have had a 4.0.

- He gets my old homework/ essays/ notes anytime he wants

- I attended this (pretty prestigious) math camp for 4 years. I applied with my own essay and asked my teacher for advice on my own initiative. For my brother, both parents took turns writing it from scratch and got me to edit it for a few hours. My brother contributed a grand total of 3 sentences after it was finished.

- After this I jokingly asked if we were going to write his college apps for him. They said yes, dead serious. ;_;

- I'm also expected to share my (personal) application essays with him, I'm pretty uncomfortable about this, but resistance is futile.

- After reading some of them he suddenly spawns the same career aspirations and dream schools as me.

I do like him and think he's generally a good person. I know I sound selfish, but it's kinda frustrating. If he gets into my dream school while I don't, I might fucking implode.

Edit: Thanks for all the comments! I appreciate the different opinions, especially the comments about us being here due to the sacrifices our parents/ previous generations made; that's a perspective I haven't considered.

To clarify, I would be happy for him if he got into his dream school and succeeded in his ideal career path. He could go to Harvard and I'd support him 100%. Just not my dream major at my dream school, which I was interested in since middle school (yeah yeah I'll touch grass). I recognize this is still a flawed mindset, but it's what I honestly feel right now.

He had his own goals before, but he wasn't really passionate in anything the way I am (besides maybe music, but there's no way he'll be allowed to pursue that.) Which is fine, he's still a kid figuring things out, but he has to actually do that.

Our relationship is mostly positive, I just get (privately) pissed sometimes. I'm not effortlessly selfless. Some of you are, Respect.

My Elder Sister

I come of a very respectable family. My father is simply a clerk in an firm. We are two brothers and two sisters. The eldest of us all is my sister Mohini. She is doing her M.B.B.S. This is her final year. Since her early age, she has been burning with a keen desire to become a doctor. It is rightly said, where there is a will there is a way. By her tireless and constant labor, she has almost achieved her goal to serve the ailing people.

It is all due to her own efforts that she is going to be a doctor. My father can hardly bear her expenses. She earns and learns. She coaches some students and gets about two hundred rupees a month. She does not only support herself, but also helps me in my studies. I have great regard and love for her.

She is very simple and of a lovable nature. Every member of the family has great affection for her. She has a very charming personality. She wins all by her set words and god manners. In the college she is loved and admired both by her class mates and professors. She is quite agreeable and polite. She performs her duties sincerely.

She is an early riser. She gets up at 4:30 a.m. She helps mother in her kitchen work. She prepares breakfast and tea for us. She leaves for her college at 9 O’clock. After college she comes home direct without wasting a minute in idle talks and wandering about. She goes to coach two students in the evening. Just after the dinner she starts to work and remain busy with her work till late at night. Her life is regular and punctual. I have never seen her becoming a victim of any disease. On Sundays, the does relax but also help mother in washing, sewing and knitting work. In a word she is quite efficient in every household duty.

She is very kind and generous. She helps her weak classmates in studies. She spares no pains in serving the suffering and the sick in our neighborhood. She aims at serving humanity. I always pray to the Almighty god for her success and health.

Solomon Thomas: My sister 'was the light of my life'

Devastated by the suicide of his older sister earlier this year, 49ers defensive end Solomon Thomas opens up about his loss -- and shares his newfound dedication to fighting America's mental health crisis.

Ella was born in April of 1993, and I was born in August of '95 -- and she let me know she was my big sister from day one. She came into the room after I was born and wanted me to play with her, but I was sleeping. So she got frustrated and started screaming "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." That was Ella. She was the light of my life from day one.

We were always close growing up. My dad's job meant that we moved a lot -- from Illinois to Australia to Connecticut then finally to Dallas, where we went to high school. Even though we were two years apart, she was three grades ahead of me in school. She was young for her grade, and  I was old. Later, when I became a football player who people kind of knew, she was always known as Solomon's sister. But for the one year we went to high school together, I was known as Ella's little brother. I loved that. That's how I always saw myself anyway -- as Ella's brother.

She was an athlete too, and she was strong and feisty and tall and beautiful. Nobody could mess with her. It always seemed like she could conquer anything ... including her younger brother! By third grade, I was close to 200 pounds, but she could still get the best of me when we would wrestle and roughhouse. There's a saying that you have to be a little mean to play football. I'm kind of a soft-spoken guy, so one day when I was at practice at Stanford, my D-line coach asked where I got my meanness. I stopped and thought for a minute, and told him that, honestly, I got beat up too many times by my sister! I don't know that I'd be playing football without her. I certainly wouldn't have been taken third in the draft in 2017. She was always the inspiration for my toughness.

At the same time, Ella had the biggest heart. She loved everyone. We went to San Francisco on vacation once and spent hours wandering around because Ella wanted to give a dollar to every homeless person she saw. She forgave every boy who broke her heart and every friend who did  her wrong. On the day she took her own life, a police officer handed me her phone and told me that the last texts she sent before she died were to two friends struggling with depression. She was trying to help them.

Ella always had anxiety. She was constantly putting pressure on herself to do well, or maybe she was trying to impress somebody. When I was in eighth grade and Ella was in 11th, her best friend's brother died from a drug overdose. I saw her go through it. I watched her grieve and go to a really dark place. It was a turning point for us. After that, she said, "I want us to take advantage of our relationship and be the best we can be to each other." From that day on, we never bickered again.

Her anxiety got really bad when she went off to college in Arkansas. At first she was doing great. But by her sophomore year, in 2012, she was struggling in school. She was always very smart -- it was never a question of that. She just started getting bad grades because she didn't want to do the work.

There was also an incident that's really hard to talk about. I've never spoken about it, but I'm just going to say it: She was gang-raped, and she was never the same. She went to a frat house on campus, and there was alcohol involved. She tried to tell people at the school, but they didn't do anything. In the end, she must have felt like it was her fault. She dropped out and didn't tell us why.

Then, almost back-to-back, a close college friend of hers died and two other acquaintances died in a boat crash. Her depression got worse and worse.

Our family is very close. The two of us used to talk all the time before that. But during that period, we would ask her, "Why are you so sad? What's going on?" She wouldn't tell us. She didn't tell our mother about the rape until two years later. She told me three years later.

In early 2017, about a year before she died, we thought things had turned around. She was open with us about her depression. She started seeing a therapist and taking anxiety medication. She said it helped sometimes, but she also said it was still hard. There were times we thought she was getting better. She would seem happy, and things would be going well with friends and at work. But then out of the blue she would get so sad again. She would try to distance herself from family and go on her own path and be a completely different person.

She moved home to Texas last year. Her depression was at its worst at Thanksgiving. She wasn't enjoying her job. She had moved back in with our parents and was upset about it. She stayed in her room a lot. Thanksgiving was tough, but we had a beautiful and amazing Christmas together as a family, the four of us and my grandmother.

In January, I came back to Dallas after the season ended to stay with my parents and train for a bit. Ella was there and we talked every day in her room. About life, about everything.

On Jan. 23, the morning she died, I woke up early to go train at the high school in Southlake. Ella wasn't home, but we just thought she was staying with a friend and weren't too concerned.  I came home from my workout around 11, and she wasn't there. My mom texted me asking if I had heard from her. I told her I hadn't. My mom stopped texting me around noon. At 1, my dad called and told me what happened. I was at home alone. I collapsed and fell to the ground, screaming and crying. Ella had a pit bull named Mickey. That moment is still a blur. The only thing I remember is Mickey licking my tears.

I kept calling my dad, who was in New York, and telling him to fly home safely. My mom was at Ella's friend's house, where she died. My dad didn't want me to go, but I had to. I drove over there, hoping and praying it wasn't true. But when I saw red and blue lights flashing, I knew. I saw my mom crying and walked over to her. Then we just hugged and cried and screamed together.

People ask me what my life is like now that she's gone. On the one hand, I'm thankful for each day  I get to still be alive. I'm beyond blessed. I have two beautiful parents; I went to my dream college; and now I get to play football for a living. I know how lucky I am. But I'm also struggling every day. Sometimes life just sucks and I go to a dark place. She was my best friend and my only sister, and I won't ever get to talk with her again. I just want her back, and there's nothing I can do about it. The days are hard. The nights are harder.

The one thing I know for sure is that if Ella knew how much her loved ones were suffering right  now, she would never have taken her own life. And I don't want her death to be in vain. I want to help other people who struggle like she did and to help other survivors. So many families are going through this right now and suffering in silence. Every day is a fight. There's always help. There's love. There's hope. It's hard to say there's hope because I won't see my sister again. But there is hope.

To families out there going through this: The best thing you can do is stay together. It's always one day at a time. Today you might not be as wrecked as you were yesterday, but your mom might be. So pull together to support her. The next day, she's probably gonna be the one lifting you up. That's how it goes.

I feel like someone out there is reading this right now who doesn't know how they are going to be able to make it through the rest of their life without the person who has just taken their life. Trust me, I know that feeling. But I know it can be done, as painful as it is. You've just gotta keep fighting every day. And to the people who are struggling with anxiety and depression, please do not feel bad about yourselves. Do not feel ashamed. It's not your fault. You're feeling that way for a reason. And there is help. You might not find the right therapist at first, or the right medication, but keep trying, keep fighting. Talk about it. Be kind to yourselves.

I've noticed that when you lose someone to suicide, a lot of people don't know what to say to you. It's human nature to ask what happened when you find out someone young died. But when the answer is that they took their own life, people tend to get quiet and change the subject, out of fear that it's too painful to talk about. I know these people mean well, but I'd rather talk about it than not talk about it. I'm always thinking about it anyway.

Talking helps. There's never a right thing to say, so stop worrying about saying the right thing.

I worry about my parents every day. They are the two most incredible people I've ever met. They show me their love every day, even though they're going through the hardest day of their lives over and over again. They fight every day to live for their baby girl. They have this saying that if you cry it's a good day because it means you let it out.

This summer I did a walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and 2,000 people showed up. A lady who had lost five siblings and both parents to suicide came up to me and told me I was being so strong. Me? That blew me away. I met a woman whose son took his own life at age 10. Ten. This has to stop. Suicide is a top-five cause of death in America for ages 13 to 35, and according to the CDC, rates are rising in every state but one.

We have to reach people at a young age and bring awareness to depression and anxiety and take away the stigma. A little kid might be feeling depressed and not even have the language to know what it is. The worst thing we can do is to ignore the warning signs or encourage kids to bottle things up and not cry or talk about what's bothering them.

I'm trying to figure out ways to start something to help fight this national health crisis. I want to go talk to middle schools, because that seems to be when kids start to feel overwhelmed emotionally. I want to tell them that they aren't weird, that feeling sad sometimes is OK, and that if they're feeling bad a lot of the time they should go talk to an adult they trust. And I'll tell them that if they don't have anyone like that, they can come talk to me.

Losing one more person to suicide is one too many. Ella wouldn't want that. I want to live the rest of my life in a way that would make her proud.  I want to help as many people as possible.
