In the follow-up to my article on How To Fully Fund Your PhD , here is a list of universities that offer fully funded PhD programs in Computer Science. If you are seeking funding for your doctoral studies, finding and entering a PhD program that offers full funding to incoming doctoral students is more achievable than winning a competitive, external doctoral fellowship. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their Ph.D. students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the three to five-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential Ph.D. programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Below is a list of universities that offer full funding to all of the admitted students for their PhD programs in computer science, computer engineering, and computer graphics.

1. Brown University, PhD in Computer Science

(Providence, RI): Provided a student is in good academic standing, Brown guarantees five years of financial support, and students are typically funded through to completion.

2. Columbia University, Department of Computer Science

(New York, NY): Most admitted students receive full financial support through Graduate Research Assistantships or Teaching Assistantships, which consist of a monthly stipend plus full tuition exemption

3. Cornell University, PhD in Computer Science

(Ithaca, NY): There are three types of funding available that are awarded to our best applicants. Each of them includes a full tuition waiver, an academic year stipend, and a Student Health Insurance package provided through the University.

4. Duke University, Department of Computer Science

(Durham, NC): Typically, Ph.D. students receive full funding for their graduate studies, including tuition, fees, insurance, and stipend. Stipend support comes in the form of graduate fellowship, teaching assistantship, or research assistantship.

5. Georgetown University, Department of Computer Science

(Washington, DC): Doctoral students have full support during the academic year through scholarships and research assistantships.

6. Harvard University, School of Engineering and Applied Science

(Boston, MA): All students admitted to our Ph.D. program receive full financial support. This includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of-living stipend.

7. Stanford University, PhD in Computer Science

(Stanford, CA): The department funds the Ph.D. candidates for the first quarter, after which he is expected to find an advisor, who usually funds them for the rest of their stay at Stanford.

8. University of Maryland-Max Planck PhD Program in Computer Science

(College Park, MD, and Berlin, Germany): Admitted students receive full financial support throughout the program, including during summers. Admission and funding info is here

9. University of Michigan, PhD in Computer Science and Engineering

(Ann Arbor, MI): The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan operates under a fully funded model for all Ph.D. students. Students receive a guarantee of full funding at the point of admission and throughout the duration of their five-year program.

10. University of Toronto, Department of Computer Science

(Toronto, Canada): The Department of Computer Science will ensure that all full-time M.Sc. and Ph.D degree graduate students receive financial support to at least the basic departmental level, provided that they are making satisfactory progress in their graduate program.

11. Washington University in St. Louis, PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering

(St. Louis, MO): Our PhD students are fully funded, including full tuition support and health insurance. As a doctoral candidate, you will also receive a generous stipend to cover living expenses and a new, high-end Apple laptop computer.

12. Fordham University

(New York, NY): With guaranteed support for five years, accepted students will have the opportunity to find their focus area while building a strong foundation across computer science fields and becoming grounded in computer science pedagogy.

13 University of Surrey

(Surrey, United Kingdom): Studentships are available for the duration of 3.5 years (or 7 years at 50% time) in all areas of its research portfolio, which includes cybersecurity and cryptography, distributed and concurrent systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. UKRI stipends £16,062 plus £3,000 per annum for full-time students; 50% of these amounts are for part-time students. Tuition fees are also covered.

14 Dalhousie University

(Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada): PhD students making satisfactory progress are fully funded for tuition and school fees, plus a minimum of $18,000 per year for at least four years. This funding commitment includes a requirement to be a teaching assistant for two terms each year.

15. University of Washington

(Seattle, WA): The Allen School provides every student accepted to their Ph.D. program with full financial support in the form of teaching and research assistantships or fellowships, from program inception to degree.

16. Johns Hopkins University

(Baltimore, Maryland): All full-time CS PhD students in good academic standing are guaranteed full funding. This includes a yearly stipend of approximately $37,333, tuition, and health insurance. Our students are primarily funded on research assistantships, with some amount of time on teaching assistantships.

17. Carnegie Mellon University

(Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania): All applicants admitted to the doctoral program receive full financial support. The department will also supplement the stipends of students with an outside fellowship to meet the stipends of students with internal funding.

18. University of British Columbia

( Vancouver ,  BC   Canada): Ph.D. students in good standing each receive $24,000 per year based on a combination of teaching and/or research duties and the Tuition Fee Award. Support is generally guaranteed for the first 60 months of the program, contingent on the student’s satisfactory performance in his or her assigned tasks.

19. University of Colorado Boulder

(Boulder, CO): Research-based MS students may transfer to the Ph.D. program at any time during their academic career at CU Boulder. All Ph.D. students in the department receive 100% funding through assistantships, fellowships, and faculty research grants.

20. Northeastern University

(Boston, Massachusetts): All students admitted to the Computer Science PhD programs receive a 5-year scholarship. This takes two forms: a 5-year graduate assistantship, or a 1-year graduate fellowship with a 4-year graduate assistantship. These scholarships provide tuition remission of up to 12 credit hours each fall and spring term, and health insurance is also covered.

21. Baylor University

(Waco, Texas): Most students finish their doctoral program within 5 years. Nearly all incoming doctoral students receive full tuition support, subsidized health insurance, and a multi-year stipend assistantship by working as Graduate assistants.

22. University of Iowa

(Iowa City, Iowa): All the PhD students receive teaching or research assistantships that fully cover tuition and additionally provide a stipend for living expenses. This support is guaranteed for a minimum of four years, given good academic standing. Several scholarships and fellowships are also available for graduate students of the Computer Science Department.

23. University of South Florida

(Tampa, FL): The Department offers financial help and almost all the Ph.D. students are covered by financial aid in one form or another. They always have new assistantships (TA/RA) for new Ph.D. students entering the Department. It comes with a stipend ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 plus a tuition waiver.

24. University of Illinois

(Urbana, IL): Ph.D. students, with very few exceptions, are funded by a research or a teaching assistantship. These provide a stipend and a full tuition waiver. Applicants to Illinois Computer Science graduate programs are automatically considered for fellowships based on the strength of their application materials.

25. University of Texas at San Antonio

(San Antonio, TX): Program applicants will automatically be considered for scholarships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.  Support for a typical Ph.D. student offers financial compensation of $18,000 or more per year (12 months) in addition to covering tuition and fees.

26. Brandeis University

(Waltham, Massachusetts): Each applicant to the PhD programs will be automatically considered for a full-tuition scholarship, plus a stipend. Funding includes a competitive fellowship, a full-tuition scholarship, and health insurance benefits for five years.

27. Old Dominion University

(Norfolk, Virginia): Most Ph.D. students are guaranteed $18,000 with the possibility of receiving $21,000 with a 100% tuition waiver by a Graduate Research Assistantships, or Graduate Teaching Assistantships. During the Summer, the CS department will provide $3,000 of support.

28. University of Michigan-Dearborn

(Dearborn, MI): All Ph.D. students receive guaranteed full funding for up to five years based on continued good academic standing and adequate progress towards the Ph.D. degree. Funding is provided in the form of an appointment as a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI), Research Assistant (GSRA), or a combination of both which covers: a monthly stipend, health insurance, and tuition waiver.

29. University of Massachusetts Amherst

(Amherst, MA): The Ph.D. program provides assistantships for students during their first full year and during each academic semester following the first year. The assistantship provides a tuition waiver and a 95% discount on the UMass Amherst health insurance plan. The stipends for the academic year 2019-2020 were $34,850.00 for 12-month appointments.

30. Rutgers University

(Piscataway, New Jersey): The department typically provides Ph.D. students with financial support in the form of teaching assistantships, fellowships, or grant-funded research assistantships. This includes a stipend for living expenses, health insurance, and tuition remission.  Financial support is typically guaranteed for the first two years and a student can expect it to be extended to the following three years.

31. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

(Troy, New York): Most CS graduate students receive financial support as teaching or research assistants. These assistantships provide both tuition and a stipend and guarantee funds for the duration of the Ph.D. studies. In addition, there are a limited number of fellowships for outstanding applicants.

Computer Science Ph.D. Program

The Cornell Ph.D. program in computer science is consistently ranked among the top six departments in the country, with world-class research covering all of computer science. Our computer science program is distinguished by the excellence of the faculty, by a long tradition of pioneering research, and by the breadth of its Ph.D. program. Faculty and Ph.D. students are located both in Ithaca and in New York City at the Cornell Tech campus . The Field of Computer Science also includes faculty members from other departments (Electrical Engineering, Information Science, Applied Math, Mathematics, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Computational Biology, and Architecture) who can supervise a student's Ph.D. thesis research in computer science.

Over the past years we've increased our strength in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer graphics, systems, security, machine learning, and digital libraries, while maintaining our depth in traditional areas such as theory, programming languages and scientific computing.  You can find out more about our research here . 

The department provides an exceptionally open and friendly atmosphere that encourages the sharing of ideas across all areas. 

Cornell is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. This beautiful area provides many opportunities for recreational activities such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, both downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, rock climbing, hiking, camping, and brewery/cider/wine-tasting. In fact, Cornell offers courses in all of these activities.

The Cornell Tech campus in New York City is located on Roosevelt Island.  Cornell Tech  is a graduate school conceived and implemented expressly to integrate the study of technology with business, law, and design. There are now over a half-dozen masters programs on offer as well as doctoral studies.

Ph.D. Program Structure

Each year, about 30-40 new Ph.D. students join the department. During the first two semesters, students become familiar with the faculty members and their areas of research by taking graduate courses, attending research seminars, and participating in research projects. By the end of the first year, each student selects a specific area and forms a committee based on the student's research interests. This “Special Committee” of three or more faculty members will guide the student through to a Ph.D. dissertation. Ph.D. students that decide to work with a faculty member based at Cornell Tech typically move to New York City after a year in Ithaca.

The Field believes that certain areas are so fundamental to Computer Science that all students should be competent in them. Ph.D. candidates are expected to demonstrate competency in four areas of computer science at the high undergraduate level: theory, programming languages, systems, and artificial intelligence.

Each student then focuses on a specific topic of research and begins a preliminary investigation of that topic. The initial results are presented during a comprehensive oral evaluation, which is administered by the members of the student's Special Committee. The objective of this examination, usually taken in the third year, is to evaluate a student's ability to undertake original research at the Ph.D. level.

The final oral examination, a public defense of the dissertation, is taken before the Special Committee.

To encourage students to explore areas other than Computer Science, the department requires that students complete an outside minor. Cornell offers almost 90 fields from which a minor can be chosen. Some students elect to minor in related fields such as Applied Mathematics, Information Science, Electrical Engineering, or Operations Research. Others use this opportunity to pursue interests as diverse as Music, Theater, Psychology, Women's Studies, Philosophy, and Finance.

The computer science Ph.D. program complies with the requirements of the Cornell Graduate School , which include requirements on residency, minimum grades, examinations, and dissertation.

The Department also administers a very small 2-year Master of Science program (with thesis). Students in this program serve as teaching assistants and receive full tuition plus a stipend for their services.

Machine Learning - CMU

Carnegie Mellon University's doctoral program in Machine Learning is designed to train students to become tomorrow's leaders through a combination of interdisciplinary coursework, hands-on applications, and cutting-edge research. Graduates of the Ph.D. program in Machine Learning will be uniquely positioned to pioneer new developments in the field, and to be leaders in both industry and academia.

Understanding the most effective ways of using the vast amounts of data that are now being stored is a significant challenge to society, and therefore to science and technology, as it seeks to obtain a return on the huge investment that is being made in computerization and data collection. Advances in the development of automated techniques for data analysis and decision making requires interdisciplinary work in areas such as machine learning algorithms and foundations, statistics, complexity theory, optimization, data mining, etc.

The PhD program is a full-time in-person committment and is not offered on-line or part-time.

PhD Requirements

Requirements for the phd in machine learning.

  • Completion of required courses , (6 Core Courses + 1 Elective)
  • Mastery of proficiencies in Teaching and Presentation skills.
  • Successful defense of a Ph.D. thesis.

Teaching Ph.D. students are required to serve as Teaching Assistants for two semesters in Machine Learning courses (10-xxx), beginning in their second year. This fulfills their Teaching Skills requirement.

Conference Presentation Skills During their second or third year, Ph.D. students must give a talk at least 30 minutes long, and invite members of the Speaking Skills committee to attend and evaluate it.

Research It is expected that all Ph.D. students engage in active research from their first semester. Moreover, advisor selection occurs in the first month of entering the Ph.D. program, with the option to change at a later time. Roughly half of a student's time should be allocated to research and lab work, and half to courses until these are completed.

Rules for the MLD PhD Thesis Committee (applicable to all ML PhDs): The committee should be assembled by the student and their advisor, and approved by the PhD Program Director(s).  It must include:

  • At least one MLD Core Faculty member
  • At least one additional MLD Core or Affiliated Faculty member
  • At least one External Member, usually meaning external to CMU
  • A total of at least four members, including the advisor who is the committee chair

For applicants applying in Fall 2024 for a start date of August 2025 in the Machine Learning PhD program, GRE Scores are OPTIONAL. The committee uses GRE scores to gauge quantitative skills, and to a lesser extent, also verbal skills.

Proof of English Language Proficiency If you will be studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa, and English is not a native language for you (native language…meaning spoken at home and from birth), we are required to formally evaluate your English proficiency. We require applicants who will be studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa, and for whom English is not a native language, to demonstrate English proficiency via one of these standardized tests: TOEFL (preferred), IELTS, or Duolingo.  We discourage the use of the "TOEFL ITP Plus for China," since speaking is not scored. We do not issue waivers for non-native speakers of English.   In particular, we do not issue waivers based on previous study at a U.S. high school, college, or university.  We also do not issue waivers based on previous study at an English-language high school, college, or university outside of the United States.  No amount of educational experience in English, regardless of which country it occurred in, will result in a test waiver.

Submit valid, recent scores:   If as described above you are required to submit proof of English proficiency, your TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo test scores will be considered valid as follows: If you have not received a bachelor’s degree in the U.S., you will need to submit an English proficiency score no older than two years. If you are currently working on or have received a bachelor's and/or a master's degree in the U.S., you may submit an expired test score up to five years old. Doctoral Program

The primary focus of the doctoral program is research, with the philosophy that students learn best by doing—beginning as apprentices and becoming junior colleagues working with faculty on scholarly research projects. The faculty in the department conduct research in all areas of computer science. The doctoral degree requires a dissertation based on the candidate’s original research, which is supervised by a faculty member, and all students in the doctioral program are actively engaged in research throughout the program.

The PhD is the Computer Science Department’s primary doctoral program.  PhD students are expected to be full-time on-campus during every fall and spring academic semester from initial enrollment until the dissertation has been distributed to their defense committee, except during leaves of absence approved by the university.  PhD students spend at least half of their time on research under the direction of their faculty adviser from their first day in the program and devote themselves full time to research after coursework and other preliminaries have been completed. PhD students are also expected to participate in departmental and laboratory activities full time throughout the program, except possibly for summer internships elsewhere, and the department does not consider admission of part-time PhD students. In the news, press mentions, dean boyce's statement on amicus brief filed by president bollinger.

President Bollinger announced that Columbia University along with many other academic institutions (sixteen, including all Ivy League universities) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging the Executive Order regarding immigrants from seven designated countries and refugees. Among other things, the brief asserts that “safety and security concerns can be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the values America has always stood for, including the free flow of ideas and people across borders and the welcoming of immigrants to our universities.”

This recent action provides a moment for us to collectively reflect on our community within Columbia Engineering and the importance of our commitment to maintaining an open and welcoming community for all students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff. Freedom in Research

Students are not immediately paired with a research adviser (though they do have an academic adviser from day one). Doctoral Degree in Computer Science

Carnegie Mellon's Ph.D. in Computer Science is, above all, a research degree. When the faculty award a Ph.D., they certify that the student has a broad foundation and awareness of core concepts in computer science, has advanced the field by performing significant original research and has reported that work in a scholarly fashion.

When you begin our Ph.D. program, you’ll take the Introductory Course for Doctoral Students — an intense two week program that orients you to the department, introduces you to research and education topics our faculty are interested in, helps you find a faculty advisor and familiarizes you with Carnegie Mellon’s resources. Next, you’ll gain a broad understanding of fundamental research issues in major areas of computer science through coursework and original research. Finally, you’ll write and orally defend a thesis that guarantees you understand the area well enough to advance the state of knowledge in the field.

During the first two years of the program, you’ll gain the foundation of knowledge that will allow you to become an expert researcher in computer science, primarily by

Mastering a body of graduate material, achieved by passing 96 university units worth of graduate courses (equivalent to eight full-time courses).

Learning how to organize and begin to carry out original research, achieved by participating in directed research.

You will also serve as a teaching assistant, hone your writing and speaking skills and maintain your programming prowess. You’ll also receive periodic evaluation of your progress, and must make satisfactory progress to continue in the program.

Time Commitment:

As a Ph.D. student in computer science at CMU, you'll spend roughly five years acquiring a body of technical knowledge that includes a familiarity with the breadth of the field, as well as a deep understanding of your research area. From your second month in the program, you'll work closely with your faculty advisor, who is charged with guiding your education and monitoring your progress through the program. You'll take courses, teach and perform directed research — all to ensure that you leave Carnegie Mellon as an expert in your field. Brown's Computer Science Ph.D. program offers one of the best environments for research and education in computer science. The faculty, consisting of world leaders in their research areas, has grown steadily in number over the years. The program offers a wide variety of research options in both established and emerging areas of the discipline, and seeks out Brown's many opportunities for multidisciplinary research. Ph.D. candidates can earn a master's degree on the way to completing the Ph.D., but students admitted for a terminal master's degree cannot automatically transition to Ph.D. candidacy.

The journey to obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a long and expensive one.

From completing a diploma or A-level programme to getting a bachelor’s degree, the journey only gets more expensive as you embark on a three to seven-year journey of obtaining your PhD. 

It’s why competition for a fully-funded PhD can be fierce.

On average, the total cost of a PhD programme is somewhere between US$30,000 to US$40,000 per year, depending on where you enrol. This expense does not include the cost of living if you are moving to a different city or country to study.

Multiply that with the number of years it’ll take for you to complete your studies, and you’ll see why it’s not an easy decision to make. 

Still, there are always ways to pursue higher education at a more affordable cost. While student loans are an option, you might want to aim for a fully-funded PhD instead.

What is a fully-funded PhD programme?

A fully-funded programme usually means full tuition reimbursement and a stipend to help cover the cost of living while pursuing the degree.

However, requirements differ according to the university.

Some universities offer a “no-strings-attached” fellowship where they receive funding but do not owe the university anything aside from their research. In many cases, a student will need to work part-time for the university by providing teaching or administrative assistance which might be useful in their professional career.

It’s also important to take note that universities are not the only ones funding your PhD.

Some grants might come from government bodies to support national research objectives and train future professionals to carry them out. Others could come from independent charities that have similar goals or businesses that see potential benefits to achieve their targets.

Things to know before you attempt to secure a fully-funded PhD programme

Before we jump into introducing some fully-funded PhD programmes, let’s take a closer look at how PhD funding starts out. 

Seek advice 

Reach out to an academic advisor or supervisor for advice on the next steps to take. Chances are that they can provide suggestions or even recommendation letters. Otherwise, they can leverage on their own knowledge and networks to redirect you to a better source of information. 

If an advisor isn’t available, try reaching out to the university’s graduates to get a clearer viewpoint from someone with first-hand experience.

Many PhD projects are actually advertised with generous funding, and this is particularly so for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects. 

However, it doesn’t mean you won’t find funding in other subjects like education, sociology or even English. 

Be sure you don’t single out universities in your search. Explore opportunities with external parties, such as business or industry partners too. 

Build a funding portfolio

Getting into the PhD scene is competitive, more so when you’re looking to score a fully-funded PhD. To help secure funding, put together a portfolio to make your case as strong as possible. 

Similar to a resume, your portfolio should outline what you plan to study, how long for, and above all else, why you wish to take the PhD. 

This demonstrates your commitment and understanding to the subject and its industry field.

Living costs and expenses

Not all funded PhDs offer to cover your living expenses, especially if you’re an international student. But even if they do, it’s a good idea to set aside some funds for your day-to-day life.

Some fully-funded PhDs offer accommodation for up to a certain amount of years, so if you intend on staying on for a longer period of time, it may be wise to have some finances ready for living on your own.

Determine your timeframe

It’s common for PhD students to work while studying. Part-time study offers that flexibility, but it also stretches out the length of your PhD and increases your maintenance expenses. 

Carefully consider your options before deciding on a part-time or full-time PhD, especially if you’re employed or have other commitments.

Don’t feel discouraged if you’re nervous about your chances of securing a fully-funded PhD. There are many other universities and programmes that readily offer generous funding and high stipends , such as MIT and Stanford University.

These stipends often cover tuition, living expenses, and healthcare, so don’t count them out.

Stipendium Hungaricum provides fully-funded scholarships for international students to study their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Debrecen . This programme was designed to support the internationalisation of higher education institutions in Hungary, as well as strengthen relationships with those abroad.

This fully-funded PhD provides students with guaranteed funding between four to six years, a monthly living stipend and a comprehensive health insurance plan. Additional funding is available from a range of sources, including graduate student instructor positions and fellowships.

6. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Pursuing your PhD at the MIT Sloan School of Management demands a great deal of time, initiative, and discipline from every candidate. Only 19 students are selected from hundreds of applicants, but the rewards are worth it.

The school’s financial package will cover a period of five years guaranteed to doctoral students, given that you stand out academically. 9. University of Pennsylvania

There are two ways for Penn Graduate School of Education students to get full funding at the University of Pennsylvania .

The first is through the Dean’s Fellowship and Research Apprenticeship which includes tuition and fees, health insurance, and a living stipend. Students would also receive a fellowship and research apprenticeship package which covers four years of study.

The other is the IES Predoctoral Training Programme which offers financial and skill-building support to selected applicants. This multi-year training programme is designed to prepare PhD students committed to learning rigorous methods for conducting research.

10. Yale University

At Yale University , the School of Nursing offers fully-funded PhD degrees to its students. There are three types of scholarships available through programmes namely the Merit-Based Programme, Need-Based Programme, and Community Scholars Programme.

The Merit-Based Programme is awarded through admissions. All incoming students, both domestic and international, can sign up where they will go through a holistic review process. The Need-Based Programme is for US citizens and permanent residents.

Lastly, the new Community Scholars Programme provides complete remission of tuition, fees, and health insurance along with an annual stipend for selected students.

Computer Science is an area of study within the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Prospective students apply through Harvard Griffin GSAS; in the online application, select “Engineering and Applied Sciences” as your program choice and select "PhD Computer Science" in the Area of Study menu.

In the Computer Science program, you will learn both the fundamentals of computation and computation’s interaction with the world. Your work will involve a wide range of areas including theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, economics and computer science, privacy and security, data-management systems, intelligent interfaces, operating systems, computer graphics, computational linguistics, robotics, networks, architectures, program languages, and visualization.

You will be involved with researchers in several interdisciplinary initiatives across the University, such as the Center for Research on Computation and Society, the Institute for Applied Computational Science, the Data Science Initiative, and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.

Examples of projects current and past students have worked on include leveraging machine learning to solve real-world sequential decision-making problems and using artificial intelligence to help conservation and anti-poaching efforts around the world.

Graduates of the program have gone on to a range of careers in industry in companies like Riot Games as game directors and lead scientists at Raytheon. Others have positions in academia at University of Pittsburgh, Columbia, and Stony Brook.

What makes the program unique?

The UBC Department of Computer Science has many contacts in the computing industry. A strong rapport between the industry and research communities is beneficial to both, especially in cases where the department focuses its research to developing real-world applications.

During my Master's degree I came to Vancouver for an 8-month internship. Interacting with students and alumni from UBC and learning about the research opportunities, I realized a great potential fit. The strong group of renowned researchers in the fields of Machine-Learning and NLP made UBC the ideal place to start my Ph.D.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). The graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements. Please review the specific requirements for applicants with credentials from institutions in:

  • Canada or the United States
  • International countries other than the United States

Each program may set higher academic minimum requirements. Please review the program website carefully to understand the program requirements. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission as it is a competitive process.

English Language Test

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

Minimum requirements for the two most common English language proficiency tests to apply to this program are listed below:

Deadline to upload scans of official transcripts through the applicant portal in support of a submitted application. Information for accessing the applicant portal will be provided after submitting an online application for admission.

3) Prepare Application

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Statement of Interest

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

  • Supervision

Students in research-based programs usually require a faculty member to function as their thesis supervisor. Please follow the instructions provided by each program whether applicants should contact faculty members.

Financial Support

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

All full-time PhD students will be provided with a funding package of at least $31,920 for each of the first four years of their PhD program. The funding package consists of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. This support is contingent on full-time registration as a UBC Graduate student, satisfactory performance in assigned teaching and research assistantship duties, and good standing with satisfactory progress in your academic performance. CS students are expected to apply for fellowships or scholarship to which they are eligible.

Average Funding

  • 40 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 40 students was $6,950.
  • 77 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 77 students was $20,513.
  • 18 students received Academic Assistantships. Average AA funding based on 18 students was $6,167.
  • 81 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 81 students was $11,015.
  • 8 students received external awards. Average external award funding based on 8 students was $19,625.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

The Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI) is dedicated to nurturing, mentoring, and connecting the exceptional diverse talent that exists at historically black colleges and universities and other minority serving institutions (MSIs) to STEM graduate education and future leadership in STEM careers.

The Percy Pierre Doctoral Fellowships

Percy Pierre knows how it feels to be a pioneer; when he received his PhD at Johns Hopkins in 1967, he became the first African American in the nation to earn a doctorate in electrical engineering.

To honor this legacy, the Whiting School of Engineering has established the Percy Pierre Doctoral Fellowships. These   awards   recognize outstanding incoming graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds who will contribute both to the intellectual life of their departments and to that of the broader graduate community.

The fellowships will provide recipients with competitive monthly stipends, tuition, health insurance, and fees for the first two years of graduate school and access to a variety of special programming and mentoring opportunities

Eligible students will be considered automatically as part of their application.

Siebel Scholarship

JHU Homewood’s program is one of few similar programs in the world recognized by the Siebel Scholars Foundation for groundbreaking research, excellence in education, and high caliber of students. JHU offers five single-year awards for students in bioengineering fields who are at the top of their class based on academic results (including research), demonstrate excellence in terms of leadership qualities in the school community and in experience prior to graduate program, and have completed at least one year at the school and are reasonably expected to have only one year remaining.

This is a limited submission scholarship, so direct applications from students are not accepted. You will need to submit your application through your department’s academic manager. Please refer to the Siebel Scholarship website for specific eligibility criteria and award provisions, as they may change from year to year.

Timeframe: The announcement (from your academic program manager) of the open application period usually happens in late May and all application materials are typically due to your department program manager mid-June. If awarded, the scholarship goes into effect the upcoming fall semester.

Computer Science Department (General Pool) Scholarship

This competitive scholarship is awarded to a prospective CS PhD student who has shown exceptional promise. The primary purpose of this scholarship is to provide an incoming student who possesses a broad set of interests the flexibility to work with multiple faculty members and lab groups in their first year. The scholarship includes full first-year tuition, fees, and stipend support for 12 months.

Incoming students cannot apply directly. This scholarship is awarded to a particular student based on the recommendation of the CS Department faculty and chosen by the CS PhD faculty admissions committee.

Computer Science Graduate Achievement Scholarship

The CS Graduate Achievement Scholarship is an internally funded scholarship intended to support annual cost of living expenses and provide funds for travel and accommodations as it pertains to the awardee’s professional development.

It is awarded to a newly admitted CS PhD student who has overcome significant socioeconomic barriers and/or is a first-generation graduate student. The recipient of the scholarship must remain in resident, full-time status and in good academic standing. So long as the student meets these criteria, they will receive the scholarship each academic year until their graduation from the CS PhD program.

Incoming students cannot apply directly for this scholarship. It is awarded to a particular student based on the recommendation of the CS department chair and the CS PhD faculty admissions committee. The scholarship may not be awarded every year.

Computational Cognition Vision and Learning (CCVL) Postdoctoral Fellow

The goals of the Computational Cognition Vision and Learning (CCVL) research group are to develop mathematical and computational AI models of vision and its relations to other cognitive abilities, including language. These models should ideally have the same abilities as humans, including the capability of building models of the 3D world. The CCVL group consists of 20–30 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

The CCVL group runs a summer internship program that involves 10–20 undergraduate interns. Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to work with other research group members. The CCVL group has a strong record of publications at major conferences, including CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICLR, and NeurIPS, with twelve papers at CVPR 2022 and ten papers at ECCV 2022.

Research proposals

Students are encouraged to contact the department directly before submitting a proposal.

Research degree applications are highly competitive and we receive many more applications than we can accept. This means it is important to make your application as strong as possible.

We therefore ask that you write a research proposal with a clear vision of what you are looking to achieve and that your proposal aligns with a potential supervisor research interests.

Fully-funded PhD Studentships in Computer Science

Up to 20 fully funded PhD studentships in all research areas in Computer Science.

  • UKRI stipend (£16,062 from October 2022) plus £3,000 per annum for full-time students; 50% of these amounts for part-time students.
  • Tuition fees are also covered.
  • £3,000, total, to support conference attendance and other relevant costs.  

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey is offering up to 20 fully funded PhD studentships (at UK rates) to strengthen its research. Studentships are available for the duration of 3.5 years (or 7 years at 50% time) in all areas of its research portfolio, which includes in cybersecurity and cryptography, distributed and concurrent systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Successful applicants will become part of a vibrant PhD community and will benefit from the strong research environment and high international visibility of the Department.

Eligibility criteria

Open to UK nationals, those with EU settled or pre-settled status, or indefinite leave to remain

We expect successful applicants to hold a BSc degree (with at least UK 2:1 honours, or equivalent) or an MSc degree with distinction in Computer Science or a related discipline.

The standard English language requirement is for a score of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category, in an IELTLS Academic test taken in the last 2 years. Equivalent qualifications are listed on our language requirements page .

You would need to identify an appropriate area of research, and preferably identify one or more potential supervisors and provide a brief research proposal to assist in matching with supervisors. For research areas, visit the Computer Science PhD programme page .

Applications will be assessed on an ongoing basis until all studentships have been allocated. We recommend you apply early.

To apply please upload your CV, copies of all degree certificates and transcripts, and the contact details of two referees (ideally, arrange for their letters of recommendation to be added to your application), and provide a covering letter identifying research area and preferably also potential supervisors and a brief research proposal.
