I remember the first time I had to write a resume . I was 16 and applying to a role at American Eagle (yes, I made a resume in high school; no, I did not need one to get an after-school job; yes, I was very extra). Having zero context for what one should look like, I took my older brother’s resume and copy-and-pasted my own experience into his template.

Maybe that’s your go-to strategy: Find someone with a great resume and make it your own. I won’t deny it worked well for me—and I still use that same template to this day.

But if you’ve never made a resume and don’t have someone else’s to work off of, you may be in need of a template. We’ve collected eight of our favorite Google Docs resume templates that are fun and cheap (if not free!)—as well as some tips for using them to your advantage.

What makes a good resume template?

You want to pick one that’s visually appealing, easy to use, and allows you to include all the necessary resume sections. But you should also choose a resume template that can be easily “read” by an applicant tracking system (ATS) . 

ATSs are software that most employers use to store, file, and search candidate resumes to help them stay organized and find the applicants that meet the most qualifications. These programs are pretty advanced, but they’re far from perfect, and certain types of formatting may make it difficult or impossible for an ATS to accurately parse your resume.

To give yourself the best chance of getting to the next round of hiring, you want to make sure  the Google Docs resume template you choose doesn’t include any of these formatting elements:

  • Images , including photos ( in the U.S. ), logos, graphics, graphs, other visuals, or text contained in any of these elements
  • Headers and footers
  • Less common fonts
  • Columns: ATSs are programmed to read left to right, so they’ll often read columns straight across rather than reading each column from top to bottom. If this doesn’t change the experience of reading your resume, columns may be OK.

Best built-in Google Docs resume templates

Want to make creating a resume in Google Docs super easy on yourself? Choose one of Google’s premade resume templates. If you’re on docs.google.com, just click on “Template gallery” near the top right of the page and scroll down to see your resume options. If you’re already in a Google Doc, you’ll want to click “File”> “New” > “From template gallery” to see all of your options.

While Google has five built-in templates, we only recommend three of them for getting through any ATS you might encounter.

1.  Google Docs Coral resume template

Need something super simple? Look no further than this resume created right in Google Docs. With just a pop of color and clear direction as to what goes where and how to best organize your information, you can’t go wrong with this template. To make sure the ATS doesn’t get confused, you’ll want to just delete the “Hello” and “I’m” from the top of the page. Then it’s your choice whether you want your name in black or coral.

2. Google Docs Spearmint resume template

What we like most about this resume template is that the skills section goes first, which makes it perfect for career changers .

Why, you ask? Listing your skills at the top allows you to emphasize what you bring to the table (a.k.a., your transferable skills ), especially to a hiring manager who may not be able to tell how your past experiences apply to their job posting. (This resume format , where your skills are listed above your work history, is called the hybrid or combination resume .)

If you’re using this template as a career changer, make sure to keep it relevant to the job you want. This may mean removing certain jobs and skills that don’t add to your qualifications for the role you’re applying for, and possibly renaming the “Experience” section, “Relevant Experience.”

And don’t forget to tailor your bullets to apply to the job’s requirements.

3. Google Docs Modern Writer Modern Writer resume template

This is the third and final of Google’s default resume templates that we recommend. Like the “Spearmint” template above, the skills are at the top of the page, but remember that you can always tweak the order of a resume template to suit your situation (just copy and paste to move a section up or down if needed!).

Here’s another option from Career Reload that uses white space to change up the visual look of your resume. This is a great choice if you’re earlier in your career or want to focus on just a few experiences—since the formatting makes for less text space overall. 

You’ll notice that the section headings in this template are in columns, but this is an example of ATS-friendly columns—since reading the text from left to right still makes sense.

7. ResuStudio’s Google Docs resume template

If you want to up your game (and are willing to pay a bit extra to do so), this template looks that extra level of sleek and professional without being too much for the hiring manager (or ATS) to parse through. 

If you’re a bit further into your career, this template also has a two-page version. But make sure to remove the “References available upon request” bit from whichever version you use—it’s just wasting valuable space. When employers want your references, they know they can request them.

9. Any ATS-friendly resume template you’d like

None of these templates doing it for you? That’s OK—you’ve got options. Etsy has many more paid resume templates made by designers and you can search for ATS-compatible ones.

You can also use almost any Microsoft Word or other resume template you find in Google Docs with a few easy steps:

  • Download the template.
  • Go to docs.google.com and click the folder icon to open the file picker.
  • Choose “Upload” along the top of the box that appears and pick the file.
  • Save the file as a Google Doc.

Or if you’re already in a blank Google doc, click “File”>”Open” and follow steps three and four above.

Some formatting won’t translate well between programs, so be sure to double check that the template still looks good in Google Docs.

Bonus tips for using your Google Docs resume template

Not to sound too obvious, but using these templates is about more than just plugging your skills and experience in and calling it a day. You’ll need to follow a few steps:

  • Replace everything in the template with your own information , otherwise the hiring manager is going to wonder why it says “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” under your education. This means giving your resume several looks over, and then having a friend or two check it for errors, too.
  • Make the template your own , whatever that means for you. If you don’t like the color of the headings, change them. If you think your name is too big and it’s taking away space you could use for your bullet points, go ahead and decrease the font size. If you want to add your own section, whether for “ Certifications ” or “ Projects ” or some other category that’s relevant to the job description, feel free to convert an existing section you don’t need or otherwise tweak the template to fit it in. Templates are meant to be personalized, not followed to a T.
  • Focus on the content . Pretty resumes are great, but if what they say isn’t tailored to the job, thoroughly proofread, or at least somewhat interesting to read, you’re not going to land that interview. So make sure you’re writing stellar resume bullets and following these important resume tips .

  • Align your skills and experience with the job description. Tie your work directly to the role qualifications (and don’t forget to include data).
  • Be specific about projects you’ve worked on or managed. What was the outcome? How did you measure success? When in doubt, lean on the formula, “accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].”
  • If you've had a leadership role, tell us about it. How big was the team? What was the scope of your work?
  • If you're a recent university graduate or have limited work experience, include school-related projects or coursework that demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge.
  • Keep it short. We don’t have a length requirement, but concision and precision are key, so think twice before letting your resume move onto multiple pages and take careful aim with your information.

It’s hard to deny that your work experience pedigree can heavily influence the hiring decision at such a prestigious company, so in most cases, the best resume format for Google will be reverse chronological , which will impress the hiring manager or recruiter with your most recent employers and projects.

On the other hand, a functional resume (which emphasizes the skills or projects instead of specific work history) can also be a viable pick. This format is great for niche specialists or heavily technical specialists. For example, if you’re an expert in AI/ML, it might make sense to expand on that skillset. 

Most candidates go with the reverse chronological format as it’s the most common. It’s likely that you’ve worked at a similar company, so why not put your most recent employment front and center?

Another formatting consideration when writing a Google resume is making sure it's clear and easy to read. Hiring managers won’t be impressed by fancy fonts or colors — instead, they will look past the superficial and focus on what you have written.

Optimize for the ATS

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is a system used by companies to track and manage job applications. Some advanced ATSs may rank or filter resumes based on keywords and how well they match the job posting. 

For instance, if a job posting at Google requires 10 years of experience, a bachelor’s degree, and expertise in software development, you could create a resume profile summary that reads:

“Software development expert with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and 10+ years of experience at large tech companies.”

It’s not easy to get a call back from Google, so you need to make sure they know exactly where and how to reach you. That’s where your resume header comes in.  

Here, the most important thing is to present your contact information simply and professionally. 

Include the following:

  • Full name & title . List your first and last name and the title of the role you are pursuing. Use the specific title, not just “Google.”
  • Professional email address . Use a clean format like [email protected] . Don’t use a quirky, unprofessional email address.
  • Phone number . List a number where you can easily be contacted. Make sure you have a professional greeting set up and an inbox that isn’t full.
  • Location . List only your city and state . Don’t list your street address or zip code. Most of Google’s roles are hybrid and require multiple days per week in the office, so if you’re willing to or planning to relocate, note that here.
  • LinkedIn . If your LinkedIn profile is active, relevant, and shows off your expertise and experience, you can include it here.

Don’t include:

  • Date of birth : This isn’t necessary. At best, it’s useless, and at worst, it could lead to age discrimination .
  • Personal details : Avoid including your marital status, social security number, passport number , etc.

Yes, that is a real word, at least according to Google. Whether your Google resume is highlighting your passion, drive, entrepreneurship, creativity, or grit, before you start your journey towards a career at Google, you should have a serious think about what “Googleyness” means. Build your resume around it, starting with the elevator pitch of your summary section.

The summary lets you reach the hiring manager on a very personal level. In 2-4 sentences, display how you can help them and their team to elevate their performance. To start with, check out Google’s suggested reading. Look at the Google company and our teams pages. Sit down with a coffee in front of their YouTube channel. Subscribe to the blog and understand how Google cares for their Googlers . You will only understand whether you fit in (you might not) if you do your research and be honest with yourself. Otherwise, the application might simply be a gigantic waste of time (and will take a lot of time).

There is no company in the world like Google, but that doesn’t mean much if your employment history isn’t worthy of Google. Be deliberate with the stories you tell, quantify everything with numbers and context, and put yourself in the place of your future boss and colleagues when you read it back. Your Google resume should read like you already have what it takes to smash the role in question.

If you’re using a reverse chronological format , you’ll list your current (or most recent) job at the top of this section and work your way backwards. Only go back the last 10-15 years to keep it as relevant as possible, and stick to experience that is directly related to the role.

Under each role, detail your contributions and accomplishments using short bullet point statements . You can avoid pronouns like “I” and “my.” As in your summary, you’ll want to use action verbs here to paint the picture. Don’t just list job duties. Instead, demonstrate tangible and quantifiable outcomes as much as possible. 

For example, a basic resume may include statements like these: 

  • "Led projects with a team.”
  • "Navigated large tech company.”
  • "Drove solutions to complex problems.”

While these are certainly great experiences to have, they don’t prove to Google that you’re the ideal next hire. Replace them with results-based points that showcase the results you achieved—impacts on the team, the company, or the bottom line, for example. 

Doing this leads to new bullet points, like these: 

  • "Led end-to-end technical projects with teams of 5-10, achieving 99% on-time delivery.”
  • “Navigated and developed cross-functional relationships with stakeholders, peers, and executive leadership to achieve project targets and deliverables.”
  • “Spearheaded solutions to complex challenges, including development of a system to improve accuracy of metrics tracking by 75%.”

Here are 10 different scenarios to consider when drafting your resume accomplishments

  • Increased sales or profit margins
  • Financial cost savings / improved bottom line
  • Improved productivity in terms of time spent
  • Solutions that you discovered for unsolved problems
  • Innovations or ideas that have led to a change
  • Processes improved and procedures developed
  • Awards that you have won (with a reason why)

How to write a Google resume with no experience 

While it’s likely some measure of experience will be required for a job at Google, it’s still possible to craft a Google resume even if you don’t have direct experience on your resume .

Here are some tips to keep in mind when using a resume template in Google Docs.

Tip #1: Customize the template … but not too much

The resume template is completely editable, but be careful when changing fonts, formatting, and section headings. We designed each template to be readable and ATS-friendly. What does that mean?

You can learn more about applicant tracking systems (ATS) in our ATS Guide , but the most important thing to know is that when you submit your resume, your documents are organized by an online system called an ATS. The recruiter for that job uses the ATS software to search for candidates by skills or experience. In order for the system to know if your resume has the words or skills that the recruiter searches for, it needs to be able to read the text of your resume.

The problem is that it’s a robot, so it doesn’t understand things like tables, images, and non-traditional fonts.

Beyond making your resume ATS-friendly, you also need to make it user-friendly. Those same non-traditional fonts and graphics or images can be just as distracting or difficult to read for a human as they are for an ATS.

So feel free to change some of the template colors and by all means, customize the text as much as you need in order to highlight your experience. But remember that these templates are expertly designed and tested.

Do’s and Don’ts for creating an ATS-friendly resume in Google Docs

  • Use language that is simple and easy to understand. Jargon or difficult language will only confuse the ATS.
  • Use a traditional font like Times New Roman, Arial, or Helvetica for optimal readability.
  • Use a font size that is easy to read. The recommended size is 11-12 pt for regular text, and 14-16 pt for section titles.
  • Match your resume keywords to skills found in the job description.
  • Use standard resume section headings.
  • Use tables and columns to organize your resume. This can cause important information to get lost when an ATS parses your resume text.
  • Use unnecessary graphics or embellishments that might be difficult for an ATS to understand.
  • Use special characters or symbols that an ATS might misinterpret.
  • Use tables, columns, or graphics.
  • Only use acronym versions of keywords.

A Google Cloud architect shares the résumé that helped her land the job — and how she prepared for its tough interviews

Vishakha Sadhwani was set on becoming a hardware engineer after earning a bachelor's degree in electronics and telecommunications.

Designing chips seemed like a pretty cool gig, so she enrolled in a master's in computer engineering, focusing on hardware, at the University of Maryland.

But after hearing stories about the challenging job market , she decided to have a backup plan — pursuing a graduate degree in software engineering alongside her master's, hoping to get a broader understanding of the tech world.

Sadhwani landed her first internship as a software engineer working on cloud migrations, which she said sparked her interest in the field.

"Trust me when I say this: internships can be life-changing as they give you a taste of the real world and can open doors you never imagined, so go out there and get that experience," she said.

That experience with a cloud migration project Sadhwani worked on during her first internship helped her land her first job as a DevOps engineer at Brightspot. After gaining experience in the field for a year and a half, she landed a cloud engineer role at Amazon Web Services (AWS), which she described as a "pivotal moment" in her career.

After two years at AWS, a Google Cloud recruiter contacted Sadhwani, who then embarked on its comprehensive interview process.

Preparing for interviews

Sadhwani was worried that she would be underprepared, so spent considerable time revisiting fundamental cloud concepts and building up her hands-on experience.

She practiced explaining complex technical topics in simple terms as if she were speaking to a non-technical customer. "I even rehearsed my introduction in front of the mirror multiple times to ensure a confident start."

For the technical whiteboard interview round, which assesses a candidate's technical skills, Sadhwani dove deep into the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) material, even though it wasn't a formal requirement.

"This was mainly due to my fear of encountering challenging questions about Kubernetes during the interview," she said.

What she would change on her CV

Sadhwani said if she could go back and rewrite her CV before applying for the job at Google, she'd make it laser-focused on the specific role.

"Think of it like a movie trailer — you want to highlight the most exciting parts that make you a perfect fit," she said. She'd also add a short summary showcasing her key skills, such as cloud and DevOps enthusiasm.

She'd also use the "STAR" method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to highlight her achievements and craft a narrative around how she's tackled challenges and made an impact in her previous roles.

"It's like adding a little bit of storytelling magic to your résumé to make it truly stand out."

DevOps skills

Sadhwani said anyone interested in DevOps should focus on building a strong foundation to boost their employability.

They can do this through master infrastructure management, continuous integration or continuous deployment (CI/CD), and containerization.

"These are the bread and butter of any DevOps engineer and from there, you can explore specializations like DevSecOps, Cloud technologies, Infrastructure as Code [IaC], or even the trendy realm of MLOps, where AI and DevOps intersect," she said.

Sadhwani also suggests honing essential skills such as configuration management, automation, version control, and release management to make you stand out in interviews.

"For beginners, internships and co-ops are invaluable and count for a lot," she said. "For career changers, analyze your current skills and how they align with Google's diverse areas of focus."

Five years ago, I wrote an article on what to do when you get fired . One piece of advice I offered was to forget resume submissions and get off the couch. Fast forward to today, where tens of thousands are losing their jobs through layoffs , especially in the marketing and technology industries. Throughout my family and my personal and social media networks, I'm seeing the frustration of good people as they complain about finding a job, submitting their resumes and going through the interview process—all online.

I've been a business owner for almost 15 years. Before that, I was on the leadership team of several large companies and startups, and I want to provide some advice for you. The most fantastic jobs I've ever had and the best employees I've ever hired never came through a recruiter, a human resources department or from an application. They were found either through my network or through cold introductions.

While working at my office one day, a young gentleman knocked on our office door and asked if I had a few minutes to speak with him. He'd recently graduated with a graphic design degree and brought his physical portfolio. He told me he was researching agencies in the area, was impressed with our work and wanted to help us with our graphic design efforts.

We sat down and he asked several questions. After carefully listening, he started to provide feedback on our client work and our own branding, all of which had been outsourced. He opened his portfolio and even showed me some rough logo designs for my company. I was blown away by his personality, politeness, presentation, and the fact that he dared to show me how I might improve our visual designs. I hired him, despite never having a job opening. Months later, we rebranded with his designs. Today, he does package designs for one of Silicon Valley's top virtual reality companies.

Landing Your Dream Job In 2023

I can assure you this isn't just anecdotal. I'd encourage you to speak to successful entrepreneurs and leaders at organizations and ask how they got to where they are and how they found their best employees. Outside of a few industries, I'd argue they did not come from job applicants.

I believe submitting a job application in the marketing industry today is minimizing—not maximizing—your chances of finding an amazing position. Many talented people with solid experience at strong brands are now competing for the position you want—and will likely be at the top of the selection list by recruiters, human resource directors and other teams scouring resumes. So, here's my advice for you to land your next dream job:

• Build your value. Take the time while you're not working to dive into new technologies within your industry. Take courses and get certifications—there are hundreds of free resources online. Learn jobs that are adjacent to yours. For example, if you're a public relations person, learn search engine optimization (SEO) or how to craft advertising campaigns.

• Update your online profile. Update your LinkedIn profile, ask colleagues for written recommendations, and, if it's relevant to your work, build a portfolio site for yourself. The first thing any good organization does when they meet a prospective employee is to research them online, so ensure you're present. You don't need to hire anyone to rewrite your content—tools like ChatGPT or Google Bard can be fantastic in helping you to personalize and craft engaging content.

• Build your clout. There are thousands of publications online where you can contribute articles about your industry. Take the time to craft articles you think would be impactful to leaders in your industry, and include that you're open to employment opportunities. These articles can reach the right people and be used to bump up your resume and online presence.

• Research regional companies and leaders. Using regional news organizations and LinkedIn, find local companies that are getting accolades for their work, have announced growth plans or are a cultural fit for you. Dive into LinkedIn to identify who works in the departments you're interested in and whether or not you have mutual colleagues that could introduce you.

• Attend networking events. Once you have a targeted list of companies and people you'd like to meet, attend regional networking events where they are speaking, sponsoring or may be in attendance. Walking up to someone and telling them you've read a lot about their company and want to introduce yourself isn't creepy; it's assertive and exactly what networking is about.

• Listen. Any great salesperson will tell you that the key to selling isn't talking; it's listening. As you ask questions about them and their organization, you can better craft personalized responses that showcase your value and how you can help them and their organization.

• Ask and give permission. Be honest about your motivation to meet them and let them know it's absolutely okay to tell you there isn't any opportunity. If they tell you there's not, ask them for one or two colleagues at other companies or departments that may be worth speaking to.

• Ask for advice. If there is no opportunity, ask them what steps they would take if they were in your shoes to improve their chances of finding a great position with their company or the next. You may be surprised that you already have the qualifications or certifications they discuss.

This Is Your Job

There isn't anyone that's going to reach out to help you or reach out and stop you. If you're unemployed, it's now your job to take these steps to attack this busy job market and pursue the job of your dreams. Go get 'em, tiger!

ChatGPT Is Writing Lots of Job Applications, But Companies Are Quickly Catching On. Here's How. AI tools may help write your cover letter, but it's also doubling the number of applicants.

More candidates are using AI to crack a tough job market, and it's not only increasing the number of applications employers have to look through, but it's also requiring hiring managers to pay close attention to the wording of resumes and cover letters.

A Tuesday Financial Times report found that, based on the employers and recruiters the outlet talked to, about half of current job applicants use AI tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to add keywords to their resumes, write polished cover letters, and complete assessments.

AI-generated applications have also led to about twice as many applications per job posting as candidates.

But employers say it's getting easier to tell, sometimes with just a glance.

"Without proper editing, the language will be clunky and generic, and hiring managers can detect this," Victoria McLean, chief executive of career consultancy CityCV, told the Financial Times.

AI "simply can't" inject applications with the candidate's story and unique voice, according to McLean.

According to Stanford University research , four words are a giveaway that someone may have used AI for writing help: realm, intricate, showcasing, and pivotal.

Another AI keyword that could make recruiters suspicious about AI use is the word delve . Paul Graham, co-founder of startup accelerator Y Combinator, noted in April that he received a cold email proposing a new project. When he saw the word "delve" in the email, he inferred that ChatGPT played a part in writing it.

Meanwhile, many large companies do not tolerate AI use by candidates. An April survey from Resume Genius found that AI-generated resumes were the biggest red flag for 625 U.S. hiring managers.

But that doesn't mean companies oppose using it to make hiring decisions — over 97% of Fortune 500 companies use AI software to filter candidates.

CVS settled a class action lawsuit last month over allegations that the company used AI facial tracking software in interviews without candidates knowing about it. The technology picked up on facial expressions and gave each candidate an "employability score" based on its AI analysis, per the complaint.

Workday, an AI screening software used by 10,000 companies including Adobe and Salesforce, also faces a lawsuit because of how it recommends some candidates and rejects others, potentially impacting who advances to an in-person interview.

Things to know as CrossFit Games resume in Texas a day after a competitor died during a swim event

DALLAS (AP) — The CrossFit Games resumed Friday, a day after competitor Lazar Dukic died after going underwater and not resurfacing during a swimming event in a Texas lake.

In a post on the social platform X, CrossFit Games officials said that they and the entire CrossFit community were “shattered,” and while their first instinct was to “shutdown,” “isolate” and “mourn,” they decided “the best way to grieve is together.”

After the remainder of Thursday’s events were canceled, competition resumed with a moment of silence and an announcement that this year’s games, which run through Sunday, would be dedicated to Dukic. Many of the athletes who lined up for the ceremony were in tears.

Here are things to know about the tragedy and the CrossFit games:

Who was Lazar Dukic?

Dukic was a 28-year-old competitor from Serbia. The CrossFit Games said in its post on X that in addition to being “one of our sport’s most talented competitors,” he was “a son, a brother, and a friend to practically everyone who knew him.” It called Dukic “fiercely competitive, incurably joyful and uncommonly kind.”

Dukic’s biography on the CrossFit website says he was the third-ranked CrossFit athlete in Serbia and 88th worldwide. He finished ninth in his debut in the games in 2021, eighth the next season and ninth in 2023.

Dukic, who also played water polo, was an athlete ambassador for FITAID, a sports drink brand, said Gijs Spaans, the general manager for FITAID in Europe. Spaans said Dukic was a driven athlete and “just a really, really good dude,” the kind of person who “lights up the room.”

How did Dukic die?

Fort Worth police said officers who were working the event were told a participant was unaccounted for after last being seen in the water and not resurfacing. The fire department was called out at around 8 a.m. to assist, and its dive team recovered Dukic’s body from Marine Creek Lake just after 10 a.m.

The Tarrant County medical examiner has not yet listed Dukic’s cause of death.

Prior to the 800-meter (0.5-mile) swim, participants took part in a 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) run.

Kaitlin Pritchard, a spectator, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that she was by the finish line at the swimming event when she saw Dukic approach. She said he was among swimmers she noticed had changed up their swimming patterns, which she thought could have been because they were tired from the run.

Pritchard saw people she assumed were lifeguards on paddleboards on the lake but didn’t notice any of them jump in to try to rescue anyone, she said.

What safety precautions were in place?

CrossFit CEO Don Faul said in a statement Friday to The Associated Press that safety is “of paramount concern” and officials have “rigorous protocols in place for each event at the CrossFit Games.” He added that the organization has initiated an investigation into Dukic’s death, which will include “an independent third party review.”

The previous day Faul said at a news conference that safety personnel were on site at the swimming event, but he did not provide additional details. CrossFit did not immediately respond to an inquiry seeking details on its safety plan.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit was founded over 20 years ago, starting out in a garage gym in Santa Cruz, California.

It says on its website that it is a fitness program featuring workouts with “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements.” CrossFit said Friday that it has over 12,000 affiliated gyms across nearly 150 countries.

CrossFit’s popularity is tied to the bonding atmosphere created by the high-intensity workouts, said Darin White, executive director of the Center for Sports Analytics at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.

“It’s very community-based, you’re part of the gym, you’re part of that community and you encourage each other,” White said.

Training activities include everything from weightlifting and gymnastics to running, swimming and boating, White said.

What are the CrossFit Games?

The mission of the games, first held in 2007, is to “find the fittest athletes in the world,” according to the CrossFit website. They change every year, and often the details are not announced until just beforehand. Competitors come from around the world.

The City of Fort Worth said on its website that this year’s games were expected to draw 10,000 people.

White said ESPN’s broadcasting of the CrossFit Games in recent years has helped spread its popularity around the world. He said the games are similar to a decathlon only with a dozen or more separate events, and sometimes athletes don’t know their next event until minutes before it starts.

CrossFit said that over 343,000 participants from around the word competed in this year’s CrossFit Open, the first stage of their competitive season, which ends at the games with the crowning of the champions.

Kamala Harris running mate Tim Walz's accomplishments, setbacks during his time as Minnesota governor

MINNEAPOLIS — Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her presidential running mate. While Walz might not be a household name, his political star has been on the rise in recent weeks after making several viral cable news appearances.

Walz was also credited with helping launch the "weird" movement among his fellow Democrats, which has gained traction and put former President Donald Trump, his vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance and other Republicans on the defensive.

He has also been applauded and condemned for several progressive laws passed while in Minnesota's highest office, especially in his second term when the DFL Party took total control of state government following the 2022 elections.

He also faced severe criticism in his first term for how he handled the dual crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and the violent uprising that followed the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. 

In an interview with CNN last month , host Jake Tapper pressed Walz about whether he could harm the Democratic ticket, as the Trump campaign works hard to portray Harris as an ultraliberal. Walz said he was "more than happy" to take any label they have.

"What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn, and women are making their own health care decisions. And we're a top-five business state and we also rank in the top three of happiness," Walz said.

Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, believes Walz is an asset to Harris' campaign because of his "attack dog" skills.

"I think we'd see Tim Walz really going after the Trump-Vance ticket, and it'd probably be a harsher tone than what we've seen here in Minnesota in his everyday conduct. And he'd really be counted on to win the key states in the Upper Midwest," Jacobs said.

Here are several of Walz's accomplishments — with an unusual number of legislative successes scored in March 2023 alone — and setbacks during his tenure as governor.

The pandemic

Walz's use of emergency powers during the pandemic — including the institution of a mask mandate, business shutdowns and a hotline number established to report people violating social distancing guidelines — outraged his critics.

Several lawsuits followed, including one filed in 2020 by the conservative Upper Midwest Law Center alleging Walz misinterpreted the Minnesota Emergency Management Act and illegally bypassed state lawmakers when issuing a peacetime emergency.

The case, which focused on the mask mandate, eventually made its way to the Minnesota Supreme Court , which sent it back to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In July 2023, that court ruled that Walz indeed had the authority.

During his 2022 reelection campaign against GOP candidate Dr. Scott Jensen, who was banned from some social media platforms for spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, Walz consistently defended the "hard decisions" he made during the pandemic. He went on to defeat Jensen by nearly 200,000 votes.  

The murder of George Floyd and its aftermath

Conservatives lashed out at Walz for his delay in the historic activation of the Minnesota National Guard , which helped restore order on Twin Cities streets during the unrest in May 2020.

The delay drew the ire of then-President Trump , who went on to falsely claim he ultimately made the call. Months after the chaos, Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he asked Walz for troops three days before he gave the green light.

Walz, who served in the Army National Guard for nearly a quarter of a century, clapped back at Frey .

"I don't think the mayor knew what he was asking for," Walz said. "I think the mayor said, 'I request the National Guard, this is great. We're going to have massively-trained troops.' No, you're going to have 19-year-olds who are cooks!"

In a recent interview with Fox News , Minnesota Republican Party Chair David Hann accused Walz of delaying guard activation because "he was fearful of alienating his progressive base, who were supporting the riots."

"[Walz has] been a disaster for Minnesota and is by far the most partisan governor that I can remember having," Hann said. "He displayed a remarkable lack of leadership in dealing with the riot that was very destructive, and the aftermath of which is still affecting the quality of life and the business climate in Minneapolis."

Abortion rights

In a 1995 ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld abortion rights in Minnesota. In January 2023, Walz signed the PRO Act (Protect Reproductive Options Act) into law, making abortion a "fundamental right," as well as access to contraception, fertility treatments, sterilization and other reproductive health care.

The law made Minnesota the first state to codify abortion rights in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which nullified Roe v. Wade after nearly 50 years of precedent.

"Your access to reproductive health and your right to make your own health care decisions are preserved and protected," Walz said during the signing ceremony. "And because of this law, that won't change with the political wins or makeup of the Supreme Court. This is a bill for Minnesota today and all future generations."

Republicans vigorously opposed the PRO Act, which was labeled as an "extreme law" by the party's top lawmakers, who failed to add amendments that would've banned third-trimester abortions and required clinics to be licensed.

In April 2023, Walz signed the  Reproductive Freedom Defense Act  into law, shielding women and providers from any legal action originating from the patient's state.  

US-VOTE-POLITICS-HARRIS-ABORTION

Pro-LGBTQIA+ legislation

Walz has a long history of supporting LGBTQIA+ rights. While teaching at Mankato West High School in the 90s, he helped found its first gay-straight alliance group.

"You have an older, White, straight, married, male football coach who's deeply concerned that these students are treated fairly and that there is no bullying," Walz said in a 2018 campaign ad .

In March 2023, Walz signed an executive order to protect the right of residents to have access to gender-affirming health care . Weeks later, he signed the "Trans Refuge" bill, banning the enforcement of arrest warrants, extradition requests and out-of-state subpoenas for those who traveled to Minnesota for care.

"When someone else is given basic rights, others don't lose theirs," Walz said. "We aren't cutting a pie here. We're giving basic rights to every single Minnesotan."

Republicans sought to place an amendment in a separate bill to outlaw access in line with some neighboring states.

Other critics, including Christian conservative groups, claimed the law places vulnerable youths in danger of irreparable harm.

Proponents say gender-affirming care treatments are evidence-based with plans developed on a person-by-person basis, taking into consideration the patient's developmental stage.

The practice of putting LGBTQIA+ youths into " conversion therapy ," which aims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, was also formally banned in early 2023, although Walz issued an executive order two years earlier to restrict the practice.

Opponents of conversion therapy, like Children's Minnesota pediatrician Dr. Angela Kade Goepferd, say the practice can cause psychological trauma, and increase the risk of self-harm and suicide.

Opponents of the ban said it was ultimately an attack on religious freedom .

Walz, an avid hunter, signed a public safety package  later that year including a "red flag" law that allows family members, roommates or law enforcement to petition the courts to remove firearms from the possession of anyone deemed a danger to themselves or others.

Another law within the package required private gun transfers to be subject to background checks.

"This is not about the Second Amendment," Walz said. "This is about the safety and security of our communities."

Republicans and gun rights advocates accused Walz and DFL lawmakers of burying the gun control measures into the enormous package, and unfairly impacting the rights of lawful gun owners.

Paid family, medical and sick leave

In May 2023, Walz signed a law creating a state-run program to provide paid family and medical leave for Minnesota workers, funded by a 0.7% payroll tax on employers, by 2026.

While proponents say the law is an "equalizer" that provides a road map for a similar federal effort, critics claim it would cost much more than estimated and devastate small businesses.

Legalization of recreational marijuana

In May 2023, Minnesota became the 23rd state in the nation to legalize recreational cannabis use . Three months later, people 21 and older could start to possess certain amounts of marijuana at home and on their person, in addition to legally growing up to eight plants at a time.

Minnesotans with minor marijuana convictions are also eligible to have their criminal records expunged, and residents from communities of color — which were disproportionately targeted for arrests and convictions for possession for decades — are given preferential status in applying for cannabis-related business licenses .

Republican lawmakers accused the Democratic majority at the Capitol of forcing through legislation that was full of loopholes that ultimately endanger youths and increase public safety risks, especially the prospect of more impaired drivers on state roads.

Driver's licenses for undocumented Minnesotans

Walz also signed a bill into law in March 2023 that allows Minnesota residents of any immigration status the ability to obtain a driver's license .

Advocates for the bill, which had strong backing from law enforcement, business and religious groups, said it would lead to safer roads and a stronger economy.

Opponents accused lawmakers and Walz of potentially opening a Pandora's box that could blur eligibility for voting and enrollment in other state programs.

Republican lawmakers also unsuccessfully sought to make special licenses for undocumented Minnesotans that would be easily distinguishable from the standard cards.

Restoration of voting rights for former felons

In that same watershed month, Walz signed a bill that restored the right to vote to more than 50,000 convicted felons who had already served their time .

"We are in a country of second chances, we're a country of welcoming people back in. And the idea of not allowing those voices to have a say in the very governing of the communities they live in is simply unacceptable," Walz said.

Several Republicans lambasted the legislation, saying those still serving probation for felonies should not have the right to vote. Sen. Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, went further, saying the law "opens our elections to being influenced by convicted felons and illegal immigrants."

Universal school meals

Amid the increase in food insecurity for many Minnesotans during the pandemic, and the subsequent strain on the state's food shelves that remains to this day , Walz signed a bill in March 2023 that ensures all K-12 students in the state have access to free breakfast and lunch on school days.

"As a former teacher, I know that providing free breakfast and lunch for our students is one of the best investments we can make to lower costs, support Minnesota's working families, and care for our young learners and the future of our state," Walz said.

Initially pegged to cost $388 million in the state's two-year budget, the cost ballooned by more than $80 million , stoking sentiment among Republican lawmakers that the program is a waste of taxpayer funds, and largely provides meals for students of families that can easily afford to pay for them.

Walz's clashes with Hennepin County's attorney

In April 2023, Walz became the first Minnesota governor in three decades to reroute a criminal case from a county attorney to the state attorney general's office .

The case involved the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Zaria McKeever . The father of her young child was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year for orchestrating her death. Two teenage brothers, one of whom fired the fatal shots inside her Brooklyn Park apartment, were also sent to prison.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty originally put together a plea deal for the brothers that would've seen them serve time in juvenile detention instead of being sent to adult facilities. The move angered McKeever's family and community members, and their outcry led Walz to intervene and place the case in the hands of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.

Earlier this year, Moriarty faced fierce criticism for charging a White Minnesota state trooper in the death of a Black motorist in 2023 . Her office eventually dropped the charges , and Walz told reporters soon after he had planned to intervene again if Moriarty hadn't made "the right decision."

Moriarty called Walz's move in the McKeever case "deeply troubling" and alarming to "prosecutors across the state." That sentiment was shared by the National Lawyers Guild , which called Walz's conduct "not just wrong, but in the context of other decisions, shows that you are making these sensitive decisions based on political expedience."

Following the end of the state trooper case in June 2024, Moriarty accused Walz of unfair treatment due to her gender and sexuality, as she is the first openly LGBTQIA+ Hennepin County attorney, pointing to the lack of criticism her predecessor Mike Freeman enjoyed.

When pressed by the media about Moriarty's claims, Walz simply said they were "false."
