What's the best text to speech software these days?

Is there any reasonably passable text to speech software out there that would at least be somewhat useable on books?

I listen to a lot of audio books since I prefer to do my "reading" while gaming but there are quite a few books (mostly Japanese and Chinese LN/WN translations) that have never been narrated.

Was wondering if tech has advanced enough to where running a book through it could produce at least passable results. I have developed fairly high tolerance for some truly bad narrators over the years so I'm not expecting much here, just something remotely tolerable.

8 Amazing Android Apps You Won't Find on the Play Store

Don't delete these apps, even if you never use them, 8 ways to fix ghost touch problems with android.

Every Android user should keep a text-to-speech app handy. You don't need to have a vision impairment to enjoy the benefits. For example, they'll let you listen to the news on your morning commute, catch up with new text messages in bed, or even enjoy your favorite eBooks without looking at the screen.

But which Android text-to-speech apps are the best? Keep reading to find out.

1. Android's Native Text-to-Speech Feature

android text to speech (1)

Android has lots of accessibility tools that make a phone easier to use. One of the tools is a native text-to-speech function. The feature has fewer customizable settings than some of its competitors, but you can adjust the speech rate and pitch and install additional languages.

To change the text-to-speech settings, head to Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output .

Android's text-to-speech feature automatically works with other Google apps that offer a read-aloud feature. For all other apps, you'll need to enable Select to Speak in Android's settings menu, which you'll find at Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak . To use it, select text in any app and choose Speak from the popup menu.

If you only want basic text-to-speech functionality, you can stop here. The other options are only worth exploring if you need more features.

2. Voice Aloud Reader

Voice Aloud Reader is easy to use and supports a few different ways of reading text. If the app from which you want to read text has a share feature, just send the content to Voice Aloud Reader using the native Android Share menu . This also works for on-screen items that have their own share buttons, like tweets and Facebook posts.

Similarly, if the text you want to read is selectable, you can use the Share button in the popup context menu.

The app also works with URLs. Just paste the site's (or article's) address into Voice Aloud Reader, and it will automatically parse and read the relevant text for you. It's intelligent enough to strip out the menus and other junk. You can even add text files (like DOC and PDF) directly into the app; it can open the files and read their contents.

3. Narrator's Voice

Narrator's Voice offers something a bit different. The usual features are here: it is an app that reads text from apps, the web, messages, and other sources.

However, the app also has a fun side. You can add various sound effects to the speech synthesis, such as echo, reverb, gargle, and choir. It features a wide selection of voices to choose from. Some tech favorites like Cortana and Siri are present, as are some of the developer's own creations like "Steven" and "Pink Sheep" (don't ask).

Additionally, Narrator's Voice lets you add your own text, which it will then run through its synthesizer. It makes the app a great way to add a voiceover to video narrations, slideshow presentations, and more. You can even save your audio output file as an MP3, store it offline, and share it with friends.

An in-app purchase removes the ads.

talk free

Talk takes a more minimal approach than Voice Aloud Reader and Narrator's Voice, but it is still one of the best free text-to-speech apps for Android. The app can import web pages directly from your phone's browser or read the text from other third-party apps. You can export all the audio files and save them offline in the WAV format.

It's important to note that Talk Free relies on your phone's pre-existing text-to-speech (TTS) engine to work. Most Android devices will already have Google's engine installed. If you have deleted your phone's TTS engine, you can re-download Speech Recognition & Synthesis free from the Play Store.

The benefit of using Google's TTS engine is its support for lots of languages. If Google offers the language, Talk can generally work with it.

t2s app

T2S is a text-to-speech app that offers one of the most modern interfaces out of the apps we've discussed so far.

The app's standout feature is the presence of a simple built-in web browser. It's not going to win any awards for the number of features it offers, but it lets you easily listen to web pages without worrying about copying and pasting URLs or using the Share menu.

T2S's copy-to-speak feature is also worth mentioning. It shows an on-screen popup button whenever you copy text into other apps. Pressing the button will make the app start reading the copied text instantly. As with the other apps on this list, T2S lets you save your audio readouts and share them with other people. The pro version removes ads.

6. NaturalReader

Document Library in NaturalReader

With AI being all the buzz, we ought to include an AI-powered solution to this list. NaturalReader offers almost 150 AI voices in different languages and over 25 dialects so that you can customize your text-to-speech experience to your liking.

The app can run in the background, so you can use other apps while listening to content. Moreover, it supports over 20 document formats, including PDF, DOCX, and eBook formats.

Other than the usual text-to-speech features, you can also use NaturalReader to detect and read text from images. This feature can come in super handy if you deal with a lot of scanned documents.

This feature is not perfect yet, but it works. If you're not satisfied with the built-in image-to-text functionality, you can convert images to text using OCR apps and then use NaturalReader for text-to-speech.

Download: NaturalReader (Free, in-app purchases available)

We'll leave you with a slightly left-field choice: Pocket. You probably already know it as one of the best apps to save articles to read later when you're offline.

You may not know, however, that Pocket also has a text-to-speech reader. The feature supports multiple voices and languages and includes adjustable pitch and speed. It even supports background playback, meaning you can keep listening while you use other apps.

Because the text-to-speech reader is one of Pocket's native features, it's great when you want to listen to some long-form content on a journey when you are without the internet. Obviously, if you want to listen to text from all your apps, this isn't the right choice for you.

The Top Text-to-Voice Apps

Hopefully, you now appreciate the benefits of keeping a text-to-speech app installed on your Android device. Once you become more familiar with their use, you'll start to rely on the apps a lot more. Don't believe us? Try a couple, stick with them for a week or two, and thank us later!

There's also an opposite way of communicating with your Android device, that is, speech-to-text. Such apps are particularly great for note-taking.

Best Text to Speech App (TTS) for Android

text to speech app android reddit

Your mother was right when she told you that you should spend more time reading. The problem with reading is that it requires a lot of mental resources and demands your full attention. When you’re driving to work, lifting heavy weights at the gym, preparing a full course dinner for a party of six, or running errands and doing chores, those resources aren’t available, and your attention is required elsewhere.

One convenient way how to overcome this hurdle (and make your mother unhappy) is to use a Text to Speech (TTS) App for Android. As the name suggest, a TTS app converts written text into natural-sounding audio and plays it back to you. Best of all, there’s already a fantastic best text to speech app android preinstalled on your device.

1) Google Text-to-speech

The Google Text-to-Speech app has been an integral part of Android since 2013. It’s used for reading translations and pronunciation of words, reading books, giving turn-by-turn navigation, and improving accessibility across the system. After one of the most recent updates, Google Text-to-speech can also be invoked by any third-party app that supports both text selection and sharing.

For example, you can select an entire web article and have Google Text-to-speech read it to you in a voice that strongly resembles natural English or any other supported language. As of now, the list of supported languages includes Bengali, Cantonese, Danish, Dutch, several varieties of the English language, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Google is adding new languages on a regular basis as well as improving those that are already supported.

Most users should be able to use Google Text-to-speech right out of the box, but some may need to activate it or install it. The app is available on the Play Store , where you can also check if you have the latest version. To enable it

  • go to Settings
  • Language & Input
  • Text-to-speech output
  • select Google Text-to-speech as your preferred TTS engine.

2) @Voice Aloud Reader

Despite Google’s apparent technological superiority, there are other TTS apps out there that are worth your consideration. Some of the best of these apps leverage the power of Google Text-to-speech and apply it in their unique way. @Voice Aloud Reader uses third-party TTS engines, such as the one from Google, to read everything from web pages to emails to documents and even to eBooks.

Just like with Google Text-to-speech you can have it read selected text from any app, but you can also directly open TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT, EPUB, MOBI, PRC, AZW, FB2, and many other popular file formats. The app correctly handles Chinese and Japanese vertical text, making it useful for students of Asian languages and native speakers of Chinese and Japanese alike. Other useful features include the ability to add saved articles from Pocket, sync reading progress using Dropbox, record spoken articles to sound files, or, for example, look up words and phrases on Wikipedia or Google.

It’s important to keep in mind that @Voice Aloud Reader is designed to be an all-encompassing reading companion with every option and feature you might ever need. Try not to be discouraged if you don’t know what every option means. The developer has prepared a comprehensive online manual and several instructional videos , which explain how everything works in great detail.

3) Talk – Text to Voice FREE

Talk is a simple app that can help you convert any piece of text to a WAV file for later use. You can either import text directly from other apps on your phone or create a new document and type in whatever you want the app to say.

Just like @Voice Aloud Reader, Talk doesn’t come with its own TTS engine. Instead, you must have Google’s TTS engine installed for it to work. The free version of Talk is supported by ads, but there’s also a paid version, called Talk Pro , which is completely ad-free. Both versions allow you to change both pitch and speed, enabling you to customize the audio to your preferences.

Don’t confuse TTS engine with a TTS app !

Google TTS is an “engine” that only works with many Google apps such as turn by turn direction for map, reading books with Google Play Books (Google books only), etc …

@Voice Aloud Reader is a real TTS app. with full functionality – I am not sure if it uses Google TTS engine, or uses its own, but it is a real TTS app. that can read “your” documents – not just Google Map or Google Books …

You are comparing apples with oranges if you compare Google TTS with @Voice Aloud Reader !! It is like comparing Volvo car with Mitsubishi engine !

The best part is, you can use the voice effects offline , no need for an Internet connection. That being said, there are specific effects like Goku, Charmander, Articuno, etc., that require you to have an active Internet connection.

The next app, T2S implements text-to-speech in a more practical and efficient way. You can create or open a text file and convert the words to speech instantly. It uses Google Text-to-Speech Engine as it’s primary API but you can change that in Settings.  You can adjust Pitch and Speech rate to your liking and decide a phrase segmentation mode.

Copy to Speak is a nice addition to the app where you can simply copy a text from any app and convert it to speech right there . It works great. Type Speak is another great feature where the text is converted as you type. This is great for people who need assistance in communication. The best feature of this app is probably the browser mode, it translates the text of the webpage on the go. Simply, type the URL and tap play, it starts reading out the text from the webpage.

So, these were some of the best text-to-speech apps you can try. Overall, TTS has come a long way in the last few years and it’s only bound to get better. 8 of the Best Text-to-Speech Apps for Android and iPhone

Mehvish Mushtaq

If you come home from work after staring at a computer screen for hours and hours but would still like to spend time reading your favorite ebooks, what can you do? Thanks to the following text-to-speech apps, you can sit back, relax and listen instead of having to read and tiring your eyes out more. These Android and iPhone apps will read the text on your screen out loud for you.

Text to Speech without Third-Party Apps on Mobile

  • 3. T2S: Text to Voice - Read Aloud (Android)

4. Talk Free (Android)

  • 5. Narrator's Voice (Android)

6. Natural Reader (iOS)

7. speak (ios), 8. text to speech (ios), frequently asked questions.

While third-party apps do offer extra features, both Android and iPhone have built-in text-to-speech features. You must try those before jumping to the third-party apps.

On iPhone, go to “Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content” and enable the toggle for “Speak Selection” to use the native text-to-speech offered by iOS. You can customize the voice, change the speaking rate, highlight spoken content, and activate the feature using gestures.

Ios Text To Speech

Similarly, on Android, open “Settings → Accessibility,” then “Select to Speak” or “Text to Speech” and enable it. You can customize the pitch and voice of text-to-speech on Android under “Settings → System (General Management) → Language → Text to Speech.”

Android Text To Speech Enable

Listed below are the best text-to-speech third-party apps.

Pocket ( Android | iOS ) is a great app when it comes to saving articles to read later. Other than keeping your articles, Pocket can also read those articles aloud for you. Share an article to Pocket as you usually would, and when the article appears in the app, tap on it to open it. Select the headphone icon at the top, and Pocket will start to read the article. It’s as easy as that.

Text To Speech Pocket

The good thing about the Pocket app is that you can save the articles that you want to listen to. However, that’s also its drawback, as it can only read articles saved in the app. Sadly, the Pocket app doesn’t support reading text from PDF files or copied text.

On the bright side, it offers cool features like autoplay and auto-archive after listening. Even more importantly, it allows you to change the speed of audio, jump or go back 15 seconds at a time, and create a playlist.

Voice Aloud Reader is a good option when it comes to choosing a text-to-speech app. When you first install the app, it will guide you on how to use it, unlike other apps where you have to play around with them to figure out how to use them.

What makes this app interesting is that there are various ways to add text to the app. You can have the app read from sources on your phone, such as books, PDF, DOC, HTML, or TXT. You can also copy a website URL and paste it into the app. Similarly, you can share the text from where you’re reading like on a webpage, eBook reader, etc., provided it has the Share button. Select the text, tap on the Share button and choose “Voice Aloud Reader”.

Text To Speech Android Voice Aloud Reader

The best feature allows you to customize almost everything, be it the text, display, speech, voice, audio, or headset controls. However, that’s also its drawback, as a regular user could get intimidated by its features.

3. T2S: Text to Voice – Read Aloud (Android)

The T2S app is somewhat similar to the Voice Aloud Reader app. It can read text, ePub, and PDF files on your phone. In addition, the app shortcut will appear in the Android Share menu so that you can select any text and read it aloud.

The T2S app’s unique feature is that it has its own browser so that you can open and listen to websites directly. Interestingly, you can select some text on a website, and a “Speak from Here” button will appear in the app’s browser, making it easy to listen to a few lines instead of the entire article. It also supports dark mode.

Text To Speech T2s App

Another standout feature is reading any copied text without leaving that particular app. This is possible using the Copy-to-Speak feature (“T2S app Settings -> Copy-to-Speak”) that displays a floating “Speak” button. Furthermore, the app lets you customize the speech – language, rate, and pitch. You can even create rules to avoid reading punctuation or references in the text.

If you’re looking for a more straightforward app, then you might be interested in Talk Free . It may not have as many features as the other apps, but it gets the job done. When you open the app for the first time, you may get confused, as it says “Start typing here,” but you can import text from other apps into the Talk Free app and listen to it. You can also type what you want the app to say. Talk Free appears in the Android Share menu as well, so it can read web pages or text from third-party apps.

Text To Speech Android Talk

What makes this app interesting is that it appears in a text selection floating box in all apps. Just select the text and choose “Read aloud” from the menu. Apart from that, it lets you export the sound file as a WAV file. You can customize the volume, pitch, language, and speed of audio.

5. Narrator’s Voice (Android)

Unlike the previous app, Narrator’s Voice will not show up in your Share options or let you add files, but it can read the text you paste into it. You can share the audio of the text, convert it to video, send it to a timeline, or save it to your device.

What makes this app different from the rest is that it allows you to add voice effects when your text is being read aloud. You can choose from various sound effects , such as reverb, flanger, chorus, speed (make the voice slower or faster), echo, compressor, gargle, and more. You can also customize the speech language and voice.

Text To Speech Android Narrator

Sadly, the number of ads that show up is disturbing and may make you want to uninstall the app. But if you want to use voice effects, do give it a try.

Natural Reader promises to deliver in a natural-sounding voice, which it seems to have down. Unlike some of the the other iOS options, it supports many document formats. It’s as simple as importing and listening. You can listen to text files, PDFs, webpages, and eBooks or paste the text into the app.

Text To Speech Ios Narrator

Natural Reader is a solidly-built app that offers more than 50 voices. You can customize the speed, reading settings, convert text into MP3, and more. The app even offers a Dyslexia font and pronunciation editor. One negative is that you must create an account to use it – but that won’t be an issue if you enjoy using the app.

Tip: learn how to convert audio files to text .

The Speak app is a simple text-to-speech app for iOS that only supports text: no ebooks, PDFs, docs, or other forms of documents are accepted. Yet, some have gotten results by copying and pasting text from PDFs. If you are looking for an uncluttered app, Speak is a good choice.

Text To Speech Ios Speak

Furthermore, it offers a wide array of options for voice, pitch, and rate, and app options are unlocked with the free download, so there aren’t any in-app purchases. You can even change the volume and repeat the text. Apart from that, you can’t do anything else in the app.

The Text to Speech app is similar to the Speak app, as it only supports text. Type or paste the text, and you can listen to it in more than 90 different voices. You can also customize the speech rate and pitch and highlight the spoken text.

Text To Speech Ios Apps

All in all, Text to Speech is a great app for casual use or accessibility scenarios. The best thing about the app is that it lets you add a star to your favorite phrases or text. You can also group them into folders for easier access and even import/export phrases. This app will come in very handy if you are trying to learn or memorize something by listening to it. I would have loved it if the app supported listening to text from web pages.

What is TalkBack (Android) and VoiceOver (iOS)?

Both are advanced forms of Text-to-Speech that provide spoken accessibility for on-screen items. They are useful for people who have difficulty seeing the screen.

Can my phone read my texts to me?

Yes. You can use Google Assistant to send and read messages on Android and the Announce Notifications feature on iPhone to listen to your text message. Activate Google Assistant on your phone, then say “Read my most recent messages.” On iPhone, go to “Settings → Notifications → Announce notifications” and enable the toggle for the Messages app.

How can I do the opposite: convert voice to text on Android and iPhone?

Open any keyboard that supports dictation, like Gboard , Apple Keyboard, SwiftKey, etc. Tap on the microphone icon on the keyboard and start speaking. It will be converted into text as you speak.

Speech synthesis or simply put, the ability to convert text into human speech has been around for years now. In its initial days, text-to-speech started as an accessibility feature to help people with disabilities to comprehend text via voice, either using hardware or software. Gradually, over the years, speech synthesis emerged into a utility for regular users that allows them to consume content in written form over audio as part of a more efficient exercise. One of the most significant examples of this approach is audiobooks, which are seeing wide adoption among the masses.

Not just that, text-to-speech utilities also make it easier for you to consume any text via audio. Doing so allows you to multitask and consume content efficiently. So, if you are an Android or an iOS user, here are our top picks for the best text-to-speech (TTS) apps that help you read your ebooks, PDFs, or other files.

While many of today’s best free word processors , such as Google Docs, include basic TTS features that are accurate and continually improving, they may not meet all needs.

Stand-alone, app-based TTS tools, which should not be confused with the best speech-to-text apps , often have limitations compared to more comprehensive, free text-to-speech software. For instance, some might not allow the downloading of audio files, a feature crucial for creating content for platforms like YouTube and social media.

In our quest to identify the best free text-to-speech software, we have meticulously tested various options, assessing them based on user experience, performance, and output quality. Our guide aims to help you find the right text-to-speech tool, whatever your specific needs might be.

The best free text-to-speech software overall

1. Natural Reader

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

Natural Reader offers one of the best free text-to-speech software experiences, thanks to an easy-going interface and stellar results. It even features online and desktop versions.

You'll find plenty of user options and customizations. The first is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including eBook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it spoken to you.

The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text-to-speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a browser extension to convert web content to speech more easily.

The TTS tool is available free, with three additional upgrades with more advanced features for power-users and professionals.

The best free custom-voice text-to-speech software

Website screenshot for Balabolka.

2. Balabolka

There are a couple of ways to use Balabolka's top free text-to-speech software. You can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly.

In terms of output, you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create a custom voice.

In addition to reading words aloud, this free text-to-speech software can also save narrations as audio files in a range of formats including MP3 and WAV. For lengthy documents, you can create bookmarks to make it easy to jump back to a specific location and there are excellent tools on hand to help you to customize the pronunciation of words to your liking.

With all these features to make life easier when reading text on a screen isn't an option, Balabolka is the best free text-to-speech software around.

For more help using Balabolka, see out guide on how to convert text to speech using this free software.

The best free text-to-speech software for beginners

Website screenshot for Panopreter.

3. Panopreter Basic

Panopreter Basic is the best free text-to-speech software if you’re looking for something simple, streamlined, no-frills, and hassle-free.

It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name).

The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software.

If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available. This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer , the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.

The best free text-to-speech extension of Microsoft Word

Website screenshot for WordTalk.

4. WordTalk

Developed by the University of Edinburgh, WordTalk is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text-to-speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using.

The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help.

There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.

The best free text-to-speech software for websites

Website screenshot for Zabaware.

5. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader

Despite its basic looks, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text.

Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. One of the best free text-to-speech software right now, this can also convert text files to WAV format.

Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for an additional fee which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

The best free text-to-speech software: FAQs

What are the limitations of free tts software.

As you might expect, some free versions of TTS software do come with certain limitations. These include the amount of choices you get for the different amount of voices in some case. For instance, Zabaware gives you two for free, but you have to pay if you want more.

However, the best free software on this list come with all the bells and whistles that will be more than enough for the average user.

What is SAPI?

SAPI stands for Speech Application Programming Interface. It was developed by Microsoft to generate synthetic speech to allow computer programs to read aloud text. First used in its own applications such as Office, it is also employed by third party TTS software such as those featured in this list.

In the context of TTS software, there are more SAPI 4 voices to choose from, whereas SAPI 5 voices are generally of a higher quality.

Should I output files to MP3 or WAV?

Many free TTS programs give you the option to download an audio file of the speech to save and transfer to different devices.

MP3 is the most common audio format, and compatible with pretty much any modern device capable of playing back audio. The WAV format is also highly compatible too.

The main difference between the two is quality. WAV files are uncompressed, meaning fidelity is preserved as best as possible, at the cost of being considerably larger in size than MP3 files, which do compress.

Ultimately, however, MP3 files with a bit rate of 256 kbps and above should more than suffice, and you'll struggle to tell the difference when it comes to speech audio between them and WAV files.

How to choose the best free text-to-speech software

When selecting the best free text-to-speech software is best for you depends on a range of factors (not to mention personal preference).

Despite how simple the concept of text-to-speech is, there are many different features and aspects to such apps to take into consideration. These include how many voice options and customizations are present, how and where they operate in your setup, what formats they are able to read aloud from and what formats the audio can be saved as.

With free versions, naturally you'll want to take into account how many advanced features you get without paying, and whether any sacrifices are made to performance or usability.

Always try to keep in mind what is fair and reasonable for free services - and as we've shown with our number one choice, you can get plenty of features for free, so if other options seem bare in comparison, then you'll know you can do better.

How we test the best free text-to-speech software

Our testing process for the best free text-to-speech software is thorough, examining all of their respective features and trying to throw every conceivable syllable at them to see how they perform.

We also want to test the accessibility features of these tools to see how they work for every kind of user out there. We have highlighted, for instance, whether certain software offer dyslexic-friendly fonts, such as the number two on our list, Natural Reader.

We also bear in mind that these are free versions, so where possible we compare and contrast their feature sets with paid-for rivals.

Finally, we look at how well TTS tools meet the needs of their intended users - whether it's designed for personal use or professional deployment.

Best Voice-to-Text Apps of 2024

Final verdict.

  • Compare Options
  • Guide to Choosing Apps

Methodology

Voice-to-text apps can be helpful for accessibility needs and busy professionals alike. If you’re always on the go, transcribing interview notes, or you can think faster than you can write, these special programs can increase your efficiency and store the recordings safely and sound via the cloud. Depending on your needs, you can choose an app with customizable language for commonly used words or industry terms.

The main features to consider when looking at voice-to-text apps include accuracy, shortcuts, and available languages. Accuracy is one of the most critical factors, and some options perform much better than others in this area. These apps are becoming more mainstream, from basic software to advanced technology. Whether you want to take notes , send quick messages, or translate on the fly, the best voice-to-text apps below are ready to help.

Best Overall: Dragon Anywhere

Best assistant: google assistant.

  • Best Transcription: Transcribe
  • Best for Long Recordings: Speechnotes

Best for Notes: Voice Notes

  • Best for Messages: SpeechTexter

Best for Translation: iTranslate Converse

Best for niche industry terms: braina.

Dragon Anywhere

  • Price: $15 per month or $150 per year
  • Free Trial: One week
  • Accuracy Rate: 99 percent

Why We Chose It

We chose Dragon Anywhere because of its 99 percent accuracy rating and options for voice editing and formatting.

Pros & Cons

No word limits

99 percent accuracy

Multiple ways to share documents

Expensive compared to some other apps

May take time to learn the built-in commands

Available for Android and iOS devices, Dragon Anywhere is a premium professional tool that’s a big deal in the world of dictation apps. It’s 99 percent accurate and comes with voice editing and formatting. You can use the app for as long as you need—there are no word limits.

Dragon Anywhere allows you to customize industry lingo for even more accuracy. After transcription, share your notes by email, Dropbox, Evernote, and more. For supported versions, you can synchronize Dragon Anywhere with your desktop and do voice work on your computer as well. However, to do this, you will need to purchase a desktop version of Dragon as well.

Its accuracy and rich features come with a cost, but the bill could be a worthy business investment if you often think of ideas on the fly or need to record meetings. The application costs $15 per month or $150 per year.

Google Assistant

  • Price: Free
  • Free Trial: N/A
  • Accuracy Rate: Not disclosed

We chose Google Assistant because it can help you accomplish a variety of tasks.

Integrated into services you already use, such as email and messaging

Free to use

Not specifically designed for note-taking

Must use applets to boost note-taking abilities

Google Assistant does a lot, including playing music and opening maps. One of its best features? Voice recognition. You can use voice command to look up information and tell Google Assistant to perform certain functions, but it can also convert speech to text.

The app sends messages, manages tasks, and sets reminders. While it’s not a speech-to-text app in the purest sense, it will still help organize your ideas and notes with voice recognition.

Use IFTTT (If This Then That) to maximize your Google Assistant note-taking abilities. In one applet , Google Assistant can log all of your notes into a spreadsheet. You can also search IFTTT for other productivity-boosting applets or create your own as you see fit.

Best for Transcription: Transcribe - Speech to Text

Transcribe - Speech to Text

  • Price: $5 per hour of transcription, subscription options also available
  • Free Trial: 15 minutes of transcription

Transcribe - Speech to Text offers you the opportunity to transcribe any voice or video file using the help of artificial intelligence.

Transcription available for over 120 languages and dialects

Easy-to-use software

Only available for Apple products

Journalists or executive assistants who have a lot of conversations to track may find this app useful. Using A.I., Transcribe can turn any voice or video memo into a transcription in over 120 different languages and dialects. After recording, you can drop your file in this app and export your raw text into another app such as DropBox.

Keep in mind that Transcribe is only available for Apple products with Voice Memo and video since there’s no direct in-app dictation. Transcribe can also get pricey. Users receive a free trial for 15 minutes of transcription. Every extra hour costs $5 and 10 hours costs $30, but there are also subscriptions available for frequent users.

Best for Long Recordings: Speechnotes - Speech to Text

Speechnotes - Speech to Text

  • Accuracy Rate: 90 percent or better

We chose Speechnotes because it allows for extremely long recordings.

Long recordings allowed

Can add in punctuation where needed

In-app advertisements as a free app

Only available in browser and on Android

Writers who think faster than they can type will appreciate this app. Speechnotes is excellent for organizing long notes thanks to two special features. First of all, it doesn't stop recording—even if you pause to think or breathe—so you can keep the recording open for as long as needed. Second, you can tap a button or use a verbal command to insert punctuation marks into your work so they won't become too unwieldy.

The free app has a small ad banner, but you can upgrade to a premium version to get rid of it. Other perks: It won't clog up your phone space at 4 MB, plus it saves all your recordings as TXT files. Plus, you won’t need to open the app to use it either; you can tap on a widget to access Speechnotes. Keep in mind that Speechnotes is only available on your browser and Android.

Voice Notes

We chose Voice Notes for its efficient layout to help you store notes.

Recognizes 120 languages

Only available on Android phones

Voice Notes has speech recognition that allows you to create notes efficiently. You can then organize your notes into categories and create reminders by customizing alerts synced with your phone calendar. The interface is intuitive and easy to use; simply press the microphone button and speak to record. You’ll even be able to make your notes with the phone screen turned off.

The app can recognize up to 120 languages, just in case you need to record notes in something other than English. The app is free, though you can subscribe to a premium plan to support the developer.

Of course, there are a few caveats. Voice Notes is a popular app, but the one major limitation is that it's only available on Android phones. Plus, you need to have Google voice search installed to use it.

Best for Messages: SpeechTexter - Speech to Text

SpeechTexter - Speech to Text

  • Accuracy Rate: Better than 90 percent

SpeechTexter is a useful tool to help you draft texts, notes, emails, reports, and more with your voice.

Desktop and android versions available

Over 70 languages supported

Customizable commands

Offline mode is less accurate

Need to send a quick message but find your hands occupied with other tasks? Here’s a quick solution. Using Google’s backend, SpeechTexter allows you to create text notes, emails, and reports with your own voice. The easy-to-use app supports over 70 languages with an accuracy rate higher than 90 percent. You can customize your own commands for punctuation as well.

It's possible to use the app when you're not connected to the Internet, though keep in mind that the accuracy lowers in offline mode and the recognition speed depends on your Internet connectivity. To use the app offline, make sure that you install language packs of your preference.

iTranslate Converse

  • Price: $6 per month or $50 per year
  • Free Trial: Yes

We chose iTranslate Converse because it is designed to help you translate languages on the go in noisy environments.

Works well in noisy environments

Enables real-time communication with someone in another language

38 languages recognized

Subscription fee

Unknown accuracy rate

Brought to you by the same developers behind the popular iTranslate app, iTranslate Converse is as close to real-time translation as you’ll get, which is convenient if you need to communicate with clients who don’t speak the same language as you or if you’re traveling abroad. All you have to do is set the two languages. Then tap, hold, and speak into your phone.

The app will pick up on the language that you’re speaking, then issue out a translation—yes, even in noisy environments. The app is capable of recognizing 38 languages. After your conversation is done, you can download full transcriptions. It’s not always perfect, of course, but it’s faster than going through a personal assistant app to look up translations for you.

While it has a subscription fee, iTranslate won't stretch your budget significantly. When you download it, you'll receive a free trial. After that runs out, you'll be upgraded to the pro version for $6 per month or $50 per year. You must cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the trial to avoid being put on a paid membership.

  • Price: $0-$399
  • Free Trial: No
  • Accuracy Rate: 99%

Briana can help you utilize voice-to-text in a jargon-filled industry.

Personal A.I. builds to recognize your industry jargon

Over 100 languages recognized

May take some time to customize

Braina is a personal A.I. for Windows P.C.s with companion Android and IOS apps. The program can convert your voice into text for any website or software program, including a word processor. It recognizes most medical, legal, and scientific terms, which makes it ideal if you work in a niche industry with technical jargon. You can also teach Braina uncommon names and vocabulary with ease.

Braina has other helpful voice recognition features besides learning niche industry terms. For example, it can recognize over 100 languages to serve non-English users. The program also includes convenient dictation commands for deleting, tabbing, and casing.

The app has a few price tiers; there is a free version with limited access to features, while the pro version costs $79 per year or $399 for lifetime access (which often goes on sale for $199).

Dragon Anywhere is our pick for the best overall voice-to-text app thanks to its streamlined tools, high accuracy rating, and accessible computer synchronization. The app costs a bit more than other popular options, but discounts are available on annual subscriptions, and it has no limit on words.

As a bonus, Dragon Anywhere also allows users to customize their experience for specific industry lingo and other terms. This app is also accessible for Android and iOS devices and features simple sharing options to multiple apps or email accounts.

How to Use Text to Speech with Reddit?

Enabling text-to-speech feature in Reddit

Speaktor 2023-07-13

If you’re a subscriber of Reddit , you know that there’s a lot of text to sift through. Whether you’re catching up on the news or reading your favorite subreddit, there’s always something new to read. But sometimes, it can be tough to find the time to sit down and read all of the text on Reddit. That’s where text-to-speech comes in.

How do you use Text-To-Speech Feature On Reddit?

Reddit does not include any default real-time text-to-speech feature. It would help if you used third-party software to convert Reddit texts to speech.

  • Choose an automatic text-to-speech software based on your preferences.
  • Copy the content or Reddit link and paste the website, chrome extension, or mobile application of the service provider
  • Autoreader prepares the recording in which it voices the text in minutes
  • Export audio files that tts reader allows
  • Now that the audio version of the Reddit subs is available, you may use it to create a podcast, TikTok, or YouTube video or share it with your friends.

You can utilize online apps for Microsoft or iOS or mobile applications for Android and iPhone, depending on your text-to-voice service.

What are the advantages of using text-to-audio to read subreddits?

  • Save time: Unlike other social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, Reddit is a text-oriented medium. It is also distinct from Twitter. Twitter is simply a platform for brief paragraphs, and Reddit is a unique platform with long articles.
  • Listen anywhere: Text-to-speech is a great way to listen to Reddit anywhere. Whether commuting, working out, or just taking a break from staring at a screen, text-to-speech allows you to catch up on all the latest content without having to read it yourself.
  • Accessibility: Text-to-speech software increases the accessibility of content. People who are blind or visually impaired can benefit from the information found on Reddit.

Is it possible to create content for Youtube with Reddit posts?

Yes, a lot of people create content for youtube with Reddit posts. Some individuals use text-to-speech programs to convert Reddit posts to audio files. They then blend the audio with the prepared visual and make money by sharing this material on various social media platforms such as youtube videos or podcasts. Storytelling is the most popular concept of Reddit, and these stories are suitable for converting text to speech videos. There are several examples of Reddit-focused youtube channels. Most of the videos were created with auto-reader voice and screenshots of content.

How to change text-to-speech voice on Reddit?

The voice used for text-to-speech conversion depends on the software you’re using. Some software provides different accents in a language.

How to change text-to-speech language on Reddit?

The language options for text-to-speech conversion depend on the software you use. It would be best if you were careful about supported languages. A popular majority of text-to-speech converters only support English. Speaktor supports text-to-speech in over 50 languages.

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a community-based internet platform. It has forums on various themes, which are referred to as subreddits. Users can remark on one other’s postings and contribute images, videos, words, or links.

When was Reddit developed?

Reddit is a social networking site that was established in June 2005.

How to log into Reddit?

For computer:

  • Go to the website of Reddit
  • Click login at the upper right of the page
  • Choose an account creation method
  • Tap Log In if you sign in using a username and password.

For mobile applications:

  • Download the app from the application store of your device without any payment
  • Tap the account symbol in the upper-right corner, then Sign up/Log in on the pop-up page
  • Click the Create account to continue
  • Choose an account creation option
  • Tap Continue if you sign in using a username and password.

Why Reddit videos have no sound?

If it is not about your device, there may be two main reasons for sound problems:

  • Some videos may have been published to Reddit without sound by the individual who contributed the material.
  • If the video includes adult content, it may be disabled.

Frequently asked questions about Reddit:

What are the most popular subreddits.

There are several popular subreddits. Here are three examples of them:

  • r/AskReddit : Reddit’s AskReddit is a subreddit where users may ask any question they have. If you’re curious about what other people are thinking and talking about, AskReddit is a great place to start. With millions of users, there’s always someone who has an interesting perspective on any given topic. Whether you’re looking for serious discussion or want to browse through the questions and answers provided by other users, AskReddit is worth examining.
  • r/ Funny : If you’re looking for a laugh, there’s no shortage of options on r/Funny. From videos and GIFs to memes and jokes, there’s something for everyone (and plenty that will appeal to multiple senses of humor).
  • r/StartledCats : And there’s no better place to appreciate the comedic value of our feline friends than on r/StartledCats, a subreddit full of videos of cats reacting to sudden movements or everyday human activities that they don’t fully understand. From startling reactions to comical confusion, these videos never fail to entertain and amuse.

Why has Reddit become more popular?

There are many reasons why people love Reddit. Some of the main reasons are:

  • Anonymity: Anonymity is one of the most fundamental concepts that separate Reddit from other sites. Individuals are willing to express themselves openly and anonymously. This creates a sense of safety and allows users to be more honest with each other. It also allows users to share information they may not feel comfortable sharing publicly.
  • Moderation System: Moderators have the authority to prohibit and delete material and users to maintain a safe and secure Reddit environment. This is a method of increasing the quality of Reddit posts.
  • Solid Communities: Subreddits enable people with diverse interests to get together and debate a topic in depth while sharing their information and thoughts. This is an excellent opportunity to meet individuals who share your interests and learn more about them. It may also be a terrific opportunity to meet individuals from all around the world with similar interests.
  • Vote System: Reddit regularly collects user feedback with upvoted and downvoted mechanisms.

10 best dictation apps for Android to transcribe audio to text

Published on August 27, 2023

On Device Voice Typing by Google Assistant

Dictation is a niche, but important function. After all, your voice is a lot faster than typing, pretty much all the time. Your mobile is perfect for this, given its portability. Of course, you’ll need a good app to use speech-to-text. Here are the best dictation apps for Android.

The best dictation apps for Android

Google keep, google translate.

  • Live Transcribe

Microsoft Translate

Speechnotes, speechtexter, dragon anywhere, dictation websites, gboard (or most keyboards).

Price: Free

Gboard stock photo 1

Gboard is a pretty good choice for voice dictation. It has a mic icon that you press. From there, just speak your sentences, and the app types it out. You can do this in a variety of apps, including note-taking apps, emails, or other text documents. We list Gboard because it uses Google’s speech-to-text technology. It works pretty well overall. However, most keyboards have a mic option that also works. It’s a good method for voice dictation because you can use your keyboard in almost any app.

By the way, this option is even better if you have a Pixel 6 or newer Pixel phone. These devices have Assistant voice typing , which is a much more advanced version of this app’s voice-to-text feature.

Google Keep Notes stock photo 2

Google Keep is another good solution for dictation. You do need a keyboard with the functionality as well, though. The charm of Keep is that it keeps your audio file saved while your keyboard types out the transcription as you talk. You wind up with both the original audio file and also the transcription. It’s an excellent tool for this sort of thing, as many people use dictation for notes for the most part. Google Keep is a free option. Those looking for something a bit more professional can try Evernote as well.

Google Translate on smartphone stock photo 3

Google Translate is a good option for dictation. You can easily and quickly translate between many languages, and a wide variety of them work offline. You can then copy and paste the translations wherever you want. It’s an excellent option for interviews where there is a multilingual element. Every translation stays on screen until you clear it. It can be a little tedious if you need to do a lot of translating, but it gets the job done.

Live Translate

Google’s Live Transcribe is an excellent way to transcribe things. You simply talk into it, and the app puts your voice into text. It has a variety of features, mainly for accessibility. That’s what the app is for, after all. However, it does save every transcription for three days on your phone. While it’s there, you can copy and paste it to your chosen note-taking or text document app. It may not work for super long applications, but otherwise, it works surprisingly well.

Microsoft Translator is one of the best Filipino to English dictionary apps for android - Dictation apps

Microsoft Translate is one of the better dictation apps for the same reason as Google Translate. You can conduct things like interviews and get translations if the answers are in a different language from yours. The app boasts 70 languages, a two-pane mode in case both speakers need translation, and you can copy and paste stuff from the app into another one for future reference. Google Translate is the better option, but this is a good second option if Google isn’t doing it for you.

Price: Free / $16.99 per month

Otter Voice Meeting Notes screenshot - Dictation apps

Otter is one of the most popular dictation apps on mobile right now. It’s technically a voice recorder app. You record voice audio, whether it be a work meeting or a school lecture. The app then gives you the option to listen and transcribe the audio. The free version of the app supports 300 minutes per month for free. Anything more serious and you need the subscription. There are also a bunch of other features, like collaboration features, the ability to identify speakers, and more. This is easily one of the best on mobile and one of the ones we’d recommend first.

Price: Free / $2.99 per month / $22.99 once

Speechnotes screenshot 2021 - Dictation apps

Speechnotes is an older option, but it still works decently well. This one is good for longer dictation. It boasts unlimited, non-stop dictation until you fill up your phone storage. Some other features include Google Drive backup, offline support, and controls for punctuation. There is also a home screen widget if you need it. The app has its ups and downs, a result of being around for so long. It’s also reasonably cheap with options for both a single and subscription price tier.

Speechtexter - Dictation apps

SpeechTexter is one of the better free dictation apps. It’s pretty simple to use. You simply open the app, hit the mic button, and start talking. This one supports more than 70 languages, decent accuracy, a custom commands dictionary, and you can share transcriptions if you need to. There aren’t a ton of features, but it is entirely free (with ad support), so it’s unreasonable to think it’ll compete with more expensive dictation apps. It still works well, even if it’s a bit anemic on features.

Price: $15 per month / $150 per year

Dragon Anywhere - Dictation apps

Dragon Anywhere is made by Nuance, and is a professional-grade speech recognition service for your mobile device. It offers fast dictation, document creation/sharing, voice editing, cloud syncing, and seamless integration with Dragon Professional desktop services. Sounds fancy? It kind of is, which is why this app has no free version. You can get a 7-day trial, but the app costs $15 a month otherwise.

Dictanote screenshot 2021

There are several free services online that can dictate and transcribe voice audio. Some examples include Dictanote, Amazon Transcribe , Speechnotes , Dictation.io , and many others. The services are usually free, at least to an extent, and you can access them from your mobile browser. Your browser needs mic permission, though, so be prepared for that. During testing, it seems most of them need Google Chrome to function properly so you’ll most likely need Chrome to make this solution work.

Microsoft Outlook Speeds up Email Writing With Copilot

If your pc won't run windows 11, here are 5 great linux operating systems to try instead, the microsoft store in windows is getting better, quick links, double-click format painter, use version history, use the in-app search bar, use the mobile apps, password-protect your work, check accessibility, use the onedrive personal vault.

With the Microsoft 365 suite being such a comprehensive collection of complex programs, sometimes it's easy to miss some of the handiest tricks. I've brought together a few that I find the most useful, and hopefully, they'll make your Microsoft 365 experience more secure, efficient, and enjoyable.

In this article, I'll cover six of the most commonly used Microsoft 365 apps—Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams—and explain which hacks work best with each app.

Works in Excel, Word, OneNote, and PowerPoint.

The Format Painter is an invaluable time-saver, as it allows you to duplicate formatting from one element to another. However, if you need to duplicate that formatting to many other elements, clicking the Format Painter tool each time takes too long.

Instead, there's a way to keep the Format Painter active as you go through your work and apply the copied formatting to anything you click. First, select the text, cell, image, or graphic containing the formatting you wish to duplicate (such as bold, border, and font size), and then double-click "Format Painter" in the Home tab.

An Excel sheet with a cell selected, and the Format Painter in the Home tab highlighted.

Then, click the text, cell, image, or graphic where you want that formatting to apply, before repeating the process on all the other required elements.

You'll notice that your cursor will remain a Format Painter, and the Format Painter button will remain selected, until you press a key on your keyboard or click the Format Painter button again.

An Excel sheet with the Format Painter selected via a double-click, and other items being formatted accordingly.

As of August 2024, you can't format text in To Do, the double-click Format Painter doesn't work in the early-2024 Outlook release. You can't use the Format Painter in Teams, because it's not a necessary tool for this program.

Works in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Accessing a file's Version History can be a vital capability of the Microsoft 365 suite in various situations:

  • You might remember and prefer a previous version of the work you are creating.
  • If you made a significant mistake and want to revert to the pre-mistake copy of the file.
  • If you have shared a file and want to see the changes made, you can do so with Microsoft 365's Version History.

If you have a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account, you can view up to as many as 25 previous versions of a file. However, this feature only works for files stored in your OneDrive or SharePoint. If you sign in with a school or business account, the number of versions will depend on your administration settings.

To access your version history first, ensure you have the relevant file open. Then, click the file name at the top of your screen, and click "Version History."

A Word document, with the Version History option highlighted.

You can then click through the changes using the right and left arrows in the Version History sidebar, and you'll also see a list of the people who have made changes and when they did so.

Word's Version History sidebar, with the navigation arrows highlighted.

When you choose and click a version in the sidebar, Word will show you a comparison between the latest version and the previous version you selected. If you're happy, click "Restore" in the yellow bar that appears along the top of your screen.

A Word document, with the option to restore a previous version selected.

Since Outlook doesn't save individual documents and files to OneDrive, it's not necessary to restore historical versions, but you can restore deleted items from the relevant Outlook folder . To restore deleted lists in Microsoft To Do, open the Outlook desktop app, go to "Deleted Items," right-click the task, and click "Restore." It is not possible to restore deleted Teams chats, but you can restore deleted documents in your SharePoint .

Works in all apps, but more comprehensively in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

The search bar in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote is more comprehensive than in the other apps:

  • You can search for an action, such as "Paste," " Multilevel list ," or " View Macros ."
  • The search bar will also let you find words, numbers, or characters within the file.
  • The third result lets you view more comprehensive Help articles, which open in the sidebar on the right of your screen. OneNote also searches your Sticky Notes for the same search teams.

The Search bar in OneNote, with the word Paste typed, and the results showing underneath.

You can also access search bars in To Do, Outlook, and Teams, but these only let you search for content within the file, not actions or more comprehensive support. However, this can be particularly useful if your file contains large volumes of content.

You can get mobile apps for Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

Eight Microsoft 365 mobile apps showing on a mobile phone.

I use the mobile apps all the time, because it's great to be able to do work and home stuff on the go. Whether it's jotting down an idea on OneNote, sending an email on Outlook, viewing your accounting Excel spreadsheet, or re-reading an instructional PowerPoint, it's really convenient to have the apps in your pocket at all times. Just make sure you log in using the same account you used on your PC or tablet, and everything will sync nicely (providing you have internet—if you don't, the app will save any changes you make and sync when you re-establish a connection).

Works with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Password-protecting your work gives you extra peace of mind that it is safe, even if your device ends up in the wrong hands. And doing so is straightforward.

Click "File" in the top-left corner of your Excel, Word, or PowerPoint window, and choose "Info." Then, click "Protect Document," and "Encrypt With Password."

The Encrypt With Password option in Microsoft Word.-1

You will then be asked to type your password twice, and then you can click "OK." Remember to save your password somewhere safe!

The route for password-protecting in OneNote differs slightly. You can only password-protect a Section, not the Pages within a Section. To do this, right-click the relevant Section, and choose "Password Protect This Section."

The Password Protect This Section option in OneNote.

You can then enter the password (twice) by clicking "Set Password" in the right-hand sidebar that opens.

The Set Password option in OneNote.

In Outlook, you can encrypt outgoing emails, but you cannot add passwords to outgoing or received emails. You can't password-protect a Teams chat or folder, but you can limit file and folder permissions in SharePoint.

Works in Excel, Word, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Outlook (automatically).

Microsoft 365's Accessibility Checker ensures your work doesn't present possible issues for people with disabilities. It does this by setting certain rules, such as making sure all non-text content has alternative text, or that images or objects are in line with the text.

When activated, the tool returns errors (content that is impossible or difficult for some people to read), warnings (content that can be difficult to read), tips, and intelligent services (AI-automated accessibility-friendly content for you to review).

To use this vital tool, click "Check Accessibility" in the Review tab.

The Check Accessibility tool in the Review tab on the ribbon in Excel.

You will then see a report in the right-hand tab on your screen, where you can review the suggestions. An Accessibility tab will also open on the ribbon, where you can make changes to make your file more accessible.

In Outlook, the Accessibility Checker runs automatically in the background when you compose an email. If it detects accessibility issues, a MailTip prompts you to review and correct them before you send your email.

Teams does not have the Accessibility Checker tool.

You can store most file types in the Personal Vault, including files from all Microsoft 365 apps.

The OneDrive Personal Vault is a great way to store sensitive Microsoft 365 files (and other documents, such as a scan of your passport) with another layer of security. Once you've set up your Vault, you can access it through your fingerprint, facial recognition, or an additional passcode, and it will lock after a period of inactivity.

While you can add up to three files to your Personal Vault for free, a Microsoft 365 Personal plan will enable you to upload an unlimited number of items. You can access this on your PC or, as shown in the screenshot below, via the OneDrive app.

While many of the above hacks work on the apps' web-based versions, it's worth subscribing to Microsoft 365 , as the desktop apps offer more flexibility and a broader toolset than Microsoft 365 for the web.

JD Vance, an Unlikely Friendship and Why It Ended

His political views differed from a transgender classmate’s, but they forged a bond that lasted a decade — until Mr. Vance seemed to pivot, politically and personally.

JD Vance speaking behind a Trump-Vance sign.

By Stephanie Saul

Stephanie Saul, who covers education, reviewed about 90 emails and text messages spanning between 2014 and 2017.

When his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was published in 2016, JD Vance sent an email apologizing to a close friend from his Yale Law School days. The friend identified as transgender, but Mr. Vance referred to them in the book as a lesbian.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

“Hey Sofes, here’s an excerpt from my book,” Mr. Vance wrote to his friend, Sofia Nelson. “I send this to you not just to brag, but because I’m sure if you read it you’ll notice reference to ‘an extremely progressive lesbian.’”

“I recognize now that this may not accurately reflect how you think of yourself, and for that I am really sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you’re not offended, but if you are, I’m sorry! Love you, JD.”

Nelson wrote back the same day, calling Mr. Vance “buddy” and thanking him for “being sweet,” adding, “If you had written gender queer radical pragmatist, nobody would know what you mean.” Nelson asked for an autographed copy, then signed off with, “Love, Sofia.”

That exchange is from a series of emails between two friends, part of a close-knit group of 16 students who remained together throughout their first law school semester in the fall of 2010. As now-Senator Vance seeks the vice presidency, Nelson has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, primarily from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times.

Listen to Reddit. Read aloud the front page of the internet.

text to speech app android reddit

Table of contents, how to listen to reddit, popular subreddits , how to listen to reddit at any time, the benefits of using speechify, can you listen to reddit, how do you get reddit to read to you, how do i get reddit to talk .

Reddit is indeed the front page of the internet and teems with great information. However, by having Reddit read aloud, you can save a lot of time.

Created in 2005, Reddit has grown to become one of the most popular websites on the internet. Unlike other platforms such as TikTok, Discord, and YouTube, the content on Reddit is almost entirely composed of written text. This means frequent Reddit users are required to do a lot of reading to enjoy the site's content.

But did you know that there’s a simple way to listen to Reddit posts instead of reading them? We’ll walk you through the steps of how to listen to Reddit so that you have another great option for enjoying the wealth of interesting content that it has to offer—saving you time and freeing you up for multitasking.

Nicknamed "the front page of the internet," Reddit is a community-driven website where users are able to post content in thousands of different "subreddits." These subreddits are essentially forum threads that cover an incredibly wide range of topics, from parenting to technology, politics, indie music, cryptocurrency, pop culture, and everything in between. A subreddit’s name is often indicated by r/ at the beginning, and they can be accessed by typing in “reddit.com/r/” followed by the subreddit name.

All of the subreddits on Reddit are managed by designated moderators who ensure all published posts meet community guidelines. However, content on Reddit is not as closely regulated as the content on most social media platforms, and you'll have to turn on a filter to eliminate subreddits that are Not Safe For Work (NSFW). For many users, though, this is another of Reddit's appeals, making it one of the Internet's last frontiers where you never know exactly what you are going to find.

Whether it's learning new information, engaging with like-minded individuals, or sharing your own experiences and wisdom, there are a lot of different ways to enjoy Reddit. Users, often known as Redditors, can interact with each other through commenting on thread posts, and the most popular posts get upvoted by users. The most popular Reddit posts of all can often be found at the top of their respective subreddits—or even on the front page of Reddit itself!

Thanks to these many ways to enjoy the platform, Reddit currently ranks as the world's 20th most popular website.

Getting the most out of Reddit is all about finding the right subreddits for you. No matter where your interests lie, you should have no trouble finding interesting reddit threads that cover just about every topic imaginable. If you need help getting started, though, here are a few well-known subreddits to check out:

  • r/AskReddit —  AskReddit is a subreddit where users can go to ask whatever question is on their mind. This subreddit is described as a place to “ask and answer questions that elicit thought-provoking discussions.” Whether you are looking for an answer to your own thought-provoking question or simply want to browse through the questions and answers that other users have submitted, AskReddit is well worth exploring.
  • r/Futurology —  Futurology is a subreddit where users go to discuss the latest technological advancements, focusing specifically on the biggest and most ambitious technological advancements that mankind is working to achieve. If you want a glimpse of what the future might hold in store, you are sure to find a lot to enjoy on the Futurology subreddit.
  • r/EntitledParents —  Parents are great, but they can sometimes overstep boundaries. This leads to a lot of humorous stories and a few that might tug at your heartstrings as well. If you enjoy reading about other people's drama, the stories on EntitledParents are sure to catch your interest.
  • r/Books —  The perfect subreddit for anyone who loves to read, Books is a subreddit that covers all things books. Authors and avid readers alike frequently post on this subreddit, making it a great place to keep up with all of the new books being published and to engage with your favorite authors and fellow book lovers.
  • r/TodayILearned —  TodayILeanred (also known as TIL) is a subreddit dedicated to interesting facts that most people don't know. It's a rabbit hole that you can easily spend hours exploring and an excellent way to ensure that you learn something new and interesting every single day.

Of course, this is just a small sample of some of the most popular subreddits on Reddit. Examples of others include stories of people’s mishaps on r/TIFU or lighthearted meme content on r/WholesomeMemes. Once you've had the chance to explore the platform, you are sure to find the best stories on Reddit and threads to match your unique interests and hobbies.

Spending a lot of time on Reddit means you have to do a lot of reading. Thankfully, there is now a way that you can listen to Reddit instead in the same way that you would listen to a podcast on Spotify. One of the best new features of Reddit is the ability to have any post or comment read aloud via text-to-speech software simply by pressing the "read" button. With this new feature, switching back and forth between reading and listening to Reddit is simpler than ever before.

Along with the ability to have comments read aloud, Reddit also offers a social audio feature similar to Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces called Reddit Talk. Reddit Talk allows you to listen to live audio in real time, and it was designed to allow Reddit users to host live talks and seminars.

Utilizing these Reddit features, though, is not the only way to listen to Reddit. If you enjoy having content read aloud to you, downloading text-to-speech software is another great option to consider. With AI-powered text-to-speech software such as Speechify , you can have any online content or digital document read aloud in a natural, realistic-sounding voice. While Reddit will read any comment for you itself, it does so using traditional text-to-speech software that produces robotic-sounding voices. If you would like to listen to Reddit and any other online content and enjoy AI voices that sound like real human narrators, AI-powered Speechify may be the ideal choice for you.

One of the biggest benefits of listening to Reddit rather than reading it is that listening to Reddit enables multitasking. With text-to-speech software, you can listen to your favorite subreddits while doing chores, driving to work, or doing any other task. If you're like most people, this will make it possible to enjoy a lot more content on the site. You can even create playlists in Speechify for an easy playback experience, similar to how you would listen to a podcast.

Another benefit of listening to Reddit is the fact that it reduces eye fatigue. Staring at a screen for hours on end can lead to headaches, blurry vision, and other symptoms of eye fatigue. So long as you keep the volume at a reasonable level, listening to Reddit with text-to-speech won't ever tire out your ears. Reddit readings can now be part of your daily routine with ease.

Whatever reason you have for wanting to listen to Reddit, though, Speechify is the perfect choice for you. Featuring dozens of high-quality AI voices, Speechify allows you to listen to any online content and also includes a number of convenient features such as adjustable listening speeds and note-taking tools.

Speechify Limited is a free version of Speechify that lets you try out the software with no credit card required and is available for download on your PC, iOS, and Android devices. To see why so many people use Speechify to listen to Reddit and other digital text, be sure to download this free version of Speechify or sign up for a free trial of Speechify Premium today!

Reddit allows you to listen to any content on the site simply by pressing the "read" button at the bottom of the comment. However, the synth voice provided by Reddit is very robotic. For customizable natural-sounding voices and more features, we recommend Speechify instead as your go-to text-to-speech option for listening to Reddit.

Pressing "read" on any comment opens up the Readr viewer, which includes text-to-speech software. This feature works on all subreddits and self-posts. However, the best option is to choose Speechify, which can produce natural voices, create playlists, and read all sorts of text out loud to you—including Reddit pages and document files.

If you would like to talk on a Reddit Talk, you can either host your own Reddit Talk or click the raised hand icon to request permission to speak from the talk's host. To get Reddit to read out loud to you, you can use Reddit’s simplistic text-to-speech option, or you can go with a more advanced program like Speechify.
