how-to-access-blocked-websites-at-school-without-vpn

Introduction

As a student, you may have encountered the frustration of trying to access certain websites at school only to find them blocked. Whether it’s social media platforms, streaming sites, or online gaming portals, school administrators often restrict access to these websites to maintain focus on academic activities. While these restrictions have their reasons, it can be frustrating when you need to access blocked websites for research or personal use.

Fortunately, there are methods to bypass these restrictions and access blocked websites at school without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs are commonly used to encrypt internet traffic and disguise the user’s location, but they may not always be available or allowed on school networks. In this article, we will explore alternative methods to access blocked websites that are practical and effective.

It is important to note, however, that attempting to bypass school website restrictions may have consequences. Always respect your school’s policies and guidelines regarding internet usage. Use these methods responsibly and for legitimate reasons.

In the following sections, we will discuss the risks and consequences of accessing blocked websites, as well as various methods that can be employed to bypass website blocking without VPNs. Keep reading to discover these effective techniques and regain access to your favorite websites at school.

Understanding Website Blocking at School

Website blocking at schools is a practice implemented by educational institutions to regulate internet usage among students. The goal is to create a controlled online environment that fosters academic focus and prevents students from accessing potentially inappropriate or distracting content. By blocking specific websites, schools aim to ensure that students are using the internet responsibly and for educational purposes.

There are several methods that schools use to block websites. One common approach is to employ content filtering software or firewalls that restrict access to specific URLs or website categories. These filters are typically set up by network administrators and can be configured to target social media platforms, entertainment websites, or any other websites deemed unnecessary or inappropriate for educational settings.

In addition to content filtering, schools may also rely on whitelisting or blacklisting certain websites. Whitelisting allows only selected websites to be accessed, while blacklisting denies access to specific websites. By utilizing these methods, schools can exert control over the websites that students are permitted to visit during their time at school.

Website blocking at school can have both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it helps maintain a focused learning environment and reduces distractions for students. It can prevent access to harmful or potentially inappropriate content that could be detrimental to students’ well-being. On the other hand, it may limit students’ access to valuable educational resources and hinder their ability to conduct research effectively.

It’s important to understand that website blocking at school is not solely motivated by control or restriction. Educational institutions have a responsibility to protect students from online threats, ensure their safety, and encourage a responsible use of technology. However, students may occasionally find the need to access blocked websites for legitimate reasons. In the next section, we will explore the potential risks and consequences of attempting to bypass these website restrictions.

The Risks and Consequences of Accessing Blocked Websites

While accessing blocked websites at school may seem like a tempting solution to bypass restrictions, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and consequences involved. By attempting to access blocked websites, students may face disciplinary actions, loss of privileges, or even legal ramifications.

One of the primary risks of accessing blocked websites is the violation of school policies or guidelines. Most educational institutions have clear rules regarding internet usage, and circumventing website blocking is often considered a breach of these policies. Students caught attempting to bypass restrictions may face consequences such as detention, suspension, or even expulsion.

Furthermore, attempting to access blocked websites may also lead to the loss of internet privileges at school. Network administrators closely monitor internet usage and can impose temporary or permanent restrictions on students who violate the rules. Losing access to the internet can severely impact your ability to complete assignments, conduct research, or access educational resources.

In some cases, the consequences of accessing blocked websites can extend beyond the school environment. Depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of the blocked content, students may inadvertently violate local laws or regulations. For example, attempting to access websites with explicit or illegal content can have serious legal implications, including fines or even criminal charges.

It is important to consider the potential risks and consequences before attempting to bypass website restrictions. While the desire to access blocked websites may be understandable, it is essential to weigh the benefits against the potential negative repercussions.

Fortunately, there are alternative methods that can allow access to blocked websites without resorting to risky behavior. In the next sections, we will explore these methods and provide guidance on how to responsibly and safely access blocked websites at school.

Methods to Access Blocked Websites Without Using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to use a VPN to access blocked websites at school, don’t worry. There are alternative methods that can help you bypass these restrictions and regain access to the websites you need. Here are several effective methods to consider:

1. Using Proxy Servers: A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the blocked website. It allows you to access blocked websites by redirecting your internet traffic through a different server. There are many free proxy servers available online that can help you bypass website restrictions. Simply search for a reliable proxy server, enter the URL of the blocked website, and the proxy server will fetch the content for you.

2. Utilizing Tor Browser: Tor Browser is a secure web browser that can be used to access blocked websites without a VPN. It works by routing your internet connection through a network of volunteer-operated servers, making it difficult to trace your online activity. Tor Browser allows you to access blocked websites anonymously, providing a safe and private browsing experience.

3. Employing Web-based Proxies: Similar to proxy servers, web-based proxies allow you to access blocked websites by entering the URL into the proxy website. These proxies work directly from your web browser without requiring any additional software or configuration. However, keep in mind that some web-based proxies may have limitations in terms of speed and reliability, so it’s essential to choose a reputable and trustworthy provider.

4. Accessing Websites via Mobile Data: If your school’s website restrictions only apply to the Wi-Fi network, you can try accessing blocked websites using your mobile data. Simply switch off the Wi-Fi on your device and use your cellular network to browse the internet. This method can be useful if your mobile data plan allows for unrestricted access to websites that might be blocked on the school network.

5. Using DNS Servers: DNS (Domain Name System) servers can be used to unblock certain websites by bypassing the DNS filtering set up by your school. You can change your device’s DNS settings to use public DNS servers that may not have the same restrictions as the school’s DNS. There are several popular public DNS servers available, such as Google DNS and OpenDNS, which can help you access blocked websites.

These methods offer viable alternatives to bypass website restrictions without relying on a VPN. However, it is important to use them responsibly and for legitimate purposes. Always consider the potential consequences and follow your school’s guidelines when accessing blocked websites.

Using Proxy Servers

One effective method to access blocked websites without using a VPN is to utilize proxy servers. A proxy server acts as a middleman between your device and the website you want to visit. It allows you to bypass website restrictions by redirecting your internet traffic through a different server that is not blocked.

Here’s how you can use proxy servers to access blocked websites at school:

1. Find a Reliable Proxy Server: Start by searching for a reliable proxy server that is accessible from your school’s network. There are numerous free proxy servers available online. Look for reputable providers that offer secure and fast connections.

2. Enter the URL: Once you’ve found a proxy server, access its website and locate the URL or address bar. Enter the URL of the blocked website that you want to visit. The proxy server will then fetch the content of the website and display it for you.

3. Browse the Website: After entering the URL, the proxy server will establish a connection with the blocked website on your behalf. You can now browse the website as if you were directly accessing it. Keep in mind that the browsing experience may be slightly slower due to the additional network hops involved.

Proxy servers work by masking your IP address and making it appear as if you are accessing the website from a different location, thereby bypassing the restrictions in place. This method allows you to access blocked websites without the need for a VPN.

However, it’s important to remember that not all proxy servers are reliable or secure. Exercise caution when using proxy servers, especially free ones, as they may compromise your internet privacy or expose you to malicious content. Stick to reputable proxy server providers with positive user reviews to ensure a safe browsing experience.

Additionally, be aware that proxy servers may not be suitable for accessing websites that require secure connections, such as online banking or shopping platforms. In such cases, it’s best to use the website’s official app or access it through a trusted, secure network.

By utilizing proxy servers, you can bypass website restrictions and gain access to blocked websites at school. Remember to use them responsibly, adhere to your school’s policies, and respect the purpose for which the website blocking is implemented.

Utilizing Tor Browser

If you are unable to use a VPN to access blocked websites at school, another effective method to consider is utilizing the Tor Browser. Tor (The Onion Router) is a secure web browser that allows you to access blocked websites while maintaining your anonymity.

Here’s how you can use Tor Browser to access blocked websites:

1. Download and Install Tor Browser: Start by downloading the Tor Browser from the official Tor Project website. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android devices. Follow the installation instructions provided by the website to set up the browser on your device.

2. Launch Tor Browser: Once the installation is complete, launch the Tor Browser. Tor employs a network of volunteer-operated servers to redirect your internet traffic, making it difficult to trace your online activity and location.

3. Connect to the Tor Network: When you open Tor Browser, it will automatically connect to the Tor network. This process might take a few moments, as it establishes a connection with multiple servers to ensure your anonymity and security.

4. Access Blocked Websites: With Tor Browser successfully connected to the Tor network, you can now use it to access blocked websites. Simply enter the URL of the website you want to visit into the browser’s address bar, and Tor will route your connection through its network, bypassing the website blocking in place.

One of the key advantages of using Tor Browser is its ability to protect your online privacy and anonymity. It encrypts your internet traffic and prevents it from being easily traced back to your device or location. This added layer of security can be especially useful when accessing blocked websites in a school environment.

However, it’s important to note that Tor browsing can sometimes be slower compared to regular browsing due to the multiple network hops your data goes through. Additionally, some websites may have security measures in place that block access from Tor exit nodes, so you may encounter occasional access issues.

By utilizing the Tor Browser, you can access blocked websites at school without a VPN while maintaining your privacy. Remember to use Tor responsibly, respect your school’s policies, and avoid engaging in any illegal activities while browsing.

Employing Web-based Proxies

If you are looking for an alternative method to access blocked websites without a VPN, employing web-based proxies can be a viable solution. Web-based proxies allow you to bypass website restrictions by accessing blocked websites through a proxy website. These proxies work directly from your web browser without requiring any additional software or configuration.

Here’s how you can use web-based proxies to access blocked websites:

1. Search for Web-based Proxies: Start by searching for reputable web-based proxies that are accessible from your school’s network. There are numerous providers available online that offer proxy services for free. Look for proxies that have positive user reviews and a good track record of reliability.

2. Access the Proxy Website: Once you find a suitable web-based proxy, access its website from your web browser. The proxy website will serve as an intermediary between your device and the blocked website you want to visit.

3. Enter the URL: On the proxy website, you will usually find an input field or an address bar where you can enter the URL of the blocked website you wish to access. Simply type in the URL and click on the appropriate button to proceed.

4. Browse the Website: After entering the URL, the web-based proxy will fetch the content of the blocked website on your behalf and display it in your browser. You can now browse the website as if you were accessing it directly, while the proxy server handles the communication with the blocked website.

Web-based proxies provide a convenient way to bypass website restrictions without the need for additional software installations. However, it’s essential to exercise caution when using free web-based proxies, as some may be unreliable or pose security risks. Stick to reputable providers and avoid entering sensitive information on websites accessed through a proxy.

Keep in mind that web-based proxies may have limitations in terms of speed, reliability, and stability. Additionally, some advanced website blocking measures employed by schools may be able to detect and block proxy websites. If you find that a particular web-based proxy is not working, you can try switching to a different one or explore other methods mentioned in this article.

By employing web-based proxies, you can effectively access blocked websites at school without the need for a VPN. However, always use them responsibly, adhere to your school’s internet usage policies, and respect the purpose for which the website blocking is implemented.

Accessing Websites via Mobile Data

If you find that certain websites are blocked on your school’s Wi-Fi network, a practical solution to access those sites is by utilizing your mobile data. By switching off the Wi-Fi on your device and using your cellular network, you can bypass the website restrictions imposed on the school network and gain access to blocked websites.

Here’s how you can access blocked websites via mobile data:

1. Disable Wi-Fi: Start by disabling the Wi-Fi on your device. This can usually be done by swiping down on your device’s screen to access the quick settings panel, then tapping the Wi-Fi icon to turn it off. Alternatively, you can go to your device’s settings and toggle the Wi-Fi off.

2. Enable Mobile Data: Once the Wi-Fi is disabled, you can enable mobile data on your device. Again, access the quick settings panel or go to your device’s settings and toggle the mobile data option on.

3. Launch Your Web Browser: With mobile data enabled, open your web browser and navigate to the website you want to access. Since you are using your cellular network for internet connectivity, you should be able to bypass any website restrictions imposed on the school Wi-Fi network.

Accessing websites via mobile data can be a straightforward and effective way to overcome website blocking at school. Many schools only restrict access to specific websites on their Wi-Fi network, allowing you to freely browse the internet using your own mobile data plan.

Keep in mind, however, that using your mobile data to access blocked websites may have limitations depending on your data plan and network coverage. Ensure that you have an adequate mobile data plan that allows for unrestricted access to websites, and be mindful of any additional charges that may apply if you exceed your data limit.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the speed and reliability of your mobile data connection. Depending on your location and network congestion, the browsing experience via mobile data may differ from using Wi-Fi. Some websites may load slower due to variations in network performance.

Overall, accessing websites via mobile data provides a viable alternative to bypass website restrictions at school. However, it’s important to follow your school’s guidelines and only use this method for legitimate purposes and during appropriate times.

Using DNS Servers

If you’re looking for a method to access blocked websites without a VPN, using DNS (Domain Name System) servers can be an effective solution. DNS servers convert domain names into their corresponding IP addresses, allowing your device to connect to the desired website. By changing your device’s DNS settings, you can bypass the DNS filtering set up by your school and access blocked websites.

Here’s how you can use DNS servers to access blocked websites:

1. Identify Public DNS Servers: There are several public DNS servers available that may not have the same restrictions as your school’s DNS. Popular options include Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) and OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220). Research and select a DNS server that suits your needs.

2. Change DNS Settings: On your device, locate the network settings and find the DNS settings section. It may be under the Wi-Fi or Internet settings, depending on your device. Replace the default DNS server addresses with the addresses of the public DNS server you have chosen.

3. Save and Apply Changes: After entering the new DNS server addresses, save the changes and apply them. Your device will now use the new DNS server to resolve domain names when accessing websites.

By using alternative DNS servers, your device bypasses the DNS filtering set up by your school, allowing you to access blocked websites. It’s important to note that changing DNS settings affects the entire device and all network connections associated with it, so this method may not be suitable if you share the device with others who utilize the school network.

While using alternative DNS servers can be an effective way to access blocked websites, it’s crucial to consider the possible limitations. Some school networks may employ more advanced website blocking methods that cannot be bypassed solely by changing DNS settings. Additionally, the effectiveness of this method may vary depending on the restrictions and network configuration set by your school.

It’s also worth noting that using public DNS servers can impact your browsing experience, as the speed and reliability of these servers may differ from your school’s DNS. It’s advisable to test different DNS servers to find one that provides optimal performance and reliability for your needs.

By utilizing alternative DNS servers, you can potentially bypass website restrictions set up by your school and gain access to blocked websites. However, always use this method responsibly and adhere to your school’s policies regarding internet usage.

Accessing blocked websites at school without a VPN is definitely possible with the right methods and precautions. While schools have website restrictions in place to create a focused learning environment, there are times when accessing certain websites for research or personal use becomes necessary. By employing methods such as using proxy servers, utilizing Tor Browser, employing web-based proxies, accessing websites via mobile data, or using alternative DNS servers, students can successfully bypass these restrictions.

It is important to remember, however, that attempting to access blocked websites may come with risks and consequences. Violating school policies can lead to disciplinary actions or loss of internet privileges. Additionally, engaging in illegal activities or accessing inappropriate content can have more severe legal ramifications. Therefore, it is crucial to use these methods responsibly, respect school guidelines, and only access blocked websites for legitimate purposes.

When utilizing these methods, it is advisable to choose reputable proxy servers or web-based proxies, install Tor Browser from the official website, ensure a reliable mobile data plan, and opt for trusted public DNS servers. By doing so, students can enhance their chances of successfully accessing blocked websites while maintaining their safety and privacy.

It’s also important to remember that website blocking techniques employed by schools may evolve over time. Therefore, staying informed about the latest restrictions and exploring new methods that emerge can be valuable in accessing blocked websites in the future.

Ultimately, while it can be frustrating to encounter website restrictions, understanding the rationale behind them and using alternative methods responsibly can help students navigate these challenges effectively. By utilizing the methods discussed in this article, students can gain access to the information and resources they need while maintaining a respectful and responsible approach to internet usage.

The landscape of free movie streaming sites has massively expanded in recent years, with more sites popping up all the time. If you're looking to watch free movies online, here are our picks for the best options.

Tubi

It's hard to argue with the vastness of Tubi's library of free movies online, which includes everything from well-known classics and box-office hits to cult movies that sometimes are unavailable to stream anywhere else. Tubi provides an unprecedented opportunity for independent filmmakers to share their work, which means you can find a variety of micro-budget movies that otherwise might never be seen. Tubi has also branched out into original productions, although the quality of those films vary.

Since selections on free movie streaming sites change frequently, it's helpful that Tubi has dedicated sections both for movies that are newly added and movies that are leaving soon. The sheer volume of content can be a bit overwhelming, but Tubi breaks down selections by genre and into specialty collections that make the experience more manageable. The ad breaks are not excessive, and the countdown to each one makes it less jarring when the movie you're watching is interrupted.

  • Huge selection of movies and TV shows
  • Lesser-known films not available anywhere else
  • Useful warnings about ad breaks
  • Sheer volume of content can be overwhelming

Pluto TV logo.

Pluto TV is a pioneer in the popular free ad-supported TV (FAST) space, offering up a range of linear-style channels. That means you don't have to scroll through a library of titles if you just want to sit back and watch TV. Put on a channel devoted to a movie genre like drama or horror, or a niche interest like Godzilla movies or Hallmark, and Pluto will offer up an endless supply of programming. There are on-demand options, too, and if something on a FAST channel catches your interest, you can pause or start from the beginning.

Thanks to Pluto's Paramount Global corporate ownership, there's often premium content from Paramount Pictures, Paramount+, CBS, and Showtime cycling through the service's offerings, along with news from local CBS affiliates. The on-demand library is a little tougher to navigate than the live channels, and Pluto's interface always has some video auto-playing, which means you can change or mute the channel, but you can't turn it off while you browse.

  • Wide selection of live channels
  • Content from Paramount Global brands
  • Large on-demand library
  • Constant auto-play video

Amazon Freevee logo

Previously known as IMDb TV, Freevee is Amazon's home for watching free movies online. That means it's fully integrated into Amazon Prime Video, so if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber searching for something to watch, you'll find Freevee offerings alongside Prime Video's library. That can be convenient because it expands the selection of what's available, but it can also be frustrating when Prime Video users click on a movie or show only to discover that it features ad breaks.

For users who aren't Amazon Prime subscribers, though, Freevee offers a convenient way to watch free movies, including some Prime Video original programming that's offered through Freevee on a limited basis. Freevee has also delved into original programming with movies like the romantic comedy Love Accidentally and series like crime drama Bosch: Legacy and Emmy-nominated reality/scripted hybrid comedy Jury Duty . With the resources of Amazon behind it, Freevee has become one of the most prominent free movie websites.

Amazon Freevee

  • Integration with Amazon Prime Video
  • Large selection of content
  • Original programming including popular titles
  • Can be confusing to distinguish from Prime Video selections

/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Hoopla.png

Hoopla is one of two major free movie websites available to anyone with a library card from many libraries across the country. Depending on the individual library's policies, cardholders can stream a limited number of free movies online every month, without subscription fees or ads. Hoopla's film library includes an assortment of classics as well as many of the same fare available on free ad-supported streaming sites. It can sometimes be tough to find new releases, but Hoopla often carries movies that have just been released for VOD rental and aren't available on any other ad-supported or subscription-based streaming services yet.

Hoopla's borrowing limits also apply to its other available formats, including e-books, graphic novels, music, and audiobooks, so it can be tricky for dedicated library patrons to balance those different types of media. Hoopla sometimes offers "bonus borrows" of content that doesn't count toward monthly limits, and it also offers BingePass, with unlimited access to similar content like Hallmark programming or Curiosity Stream documentaries for a set period of time.

  • Completely free with no ads
  • Selection of movies including exclusive new releases
  • Available to anyone with a library card
  • Limited number of streams per month
  • Movies and TV counted along with other media borrows

Kanopy

Like Hoopla, Kanopy is a way to watch free movies online for patrons of many libraries, as well as for university students. While there's plenty of overlap between selections on both Hoopla and Kanopy, Kanopy is more focused on foreign films, documentaries, and arthouse releases. Like Hoopla, Kanopy offers a limited number of free movies online depending on the individual institution that provides access. Unlike Hoopla, Kanopy is entirely devoted to movies and TV, so users don't have to split their credits among different types of media.

Selections on Kanopy may differ depending on licensing agreements for each sponsoring institution, so not every movie is available for every user. In general, Kanopy features a wide range of vintage and modern films, including movies from popular indie distributors like A24, which signed a long-term deal to provide content to Kanopy. That gives Kanopy a more diverse lineup of films than many subscription streaming services.

  • Impressive selection of arthouse and foreign films
  • Selections differ depending on the sponsoring institution

roku-channel

No, you don't need to own a Roku device in order to watch the Roku Channel . That common misconception may have kept some people away from one of the most reliable free movie websites. While the Roku Channel is integrated into Roku streaming devices and Roku TVs, it's also available as a standalone app on other streaming devices and as a website, where it features a selection of free ad-supported movies.

The Roku Channel also offers more than 350 live FAST channels, from cable brands like Ion and Court TV and franchises like The Walking Dead and Power Rangers . The Roku Channel has also delved into original programming, picking up all the shows from short-lived streaming service Quibi and producing original movies like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story . Ad breaks are relatively unobtrusive and usually cluster toward the first two-thirds or so of a movie, so the most involving part can run uninterrupted.

  • Available without a Roku device
  • Hundreds of live channels
  • Popular original programming
  • Roku integration limits usefulness elsewhere

Crackle

Initially launched in 2004, Crackle is one of the oldest free movie streaming sites, and it's undergone various changes in ownership and content over the years. One thing that's remained consistent is its position as a go-to site to watch free movies online, and its current ownership under Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment gives it access to a shared library of content with corporate sibling Redbox. You can find many of the same movies on both sites, with a range of genres, from classics to modern blockbusters, along with TV series including anime and British imports.

Crackle also hosts original content, including numerous romance and action movies, and TV shows like Chosen starring Milo Ventimiglia and the series adaptation of Guy Ritchie's Snatch . Although its original productions aren't as elaborate as they've been in the past, it's still a reliable destination for on-demand ad-supported movies, just as it's been for nearly two decades.

  • Longtime destination for free content
  • Robust library of movies and TV series
  • Scaled back original content

Free movies at Vudu

Although Vudu is mainly known as an outlet for digital purchases and rentals, it's also a destination for watching free movies online. Vudu's selections include certain movies that are available to stream for free with ads, alongside movies for rental or purchase. That can make things a bit confusing, especially when a movie's page lists both a rental price and a free option, but if you know what you are looking for, you can find plenty of options to watch free movies on Vudu.

There's a dedicated section on Vudu's site for free movies, so users don't have to sort through paid content in order to find something to watch for free. Vudu's free selections include movies and TV series in a variety of genres. Browsing through genres pulls up both free and paid offerings, so users can find something to watch for free as an alternative to a rental or purchase. It provides a good balance as long as you pay attention to how each selection is labeled.

  • Free content integrated with rentals and purcahses
  • Dedicated section for free offerings
  • Can be difficult to differentiate free and paid selections

Free movies at Redbox

People may be more familiar with Redbox for its physical kiosks outside places like grocery stores and drugstores, which offer DVDs for rent, but the Redbox website is a destination for digital purchases and rentals as well as a place to watch free movies online. There's a much wider selection of movies at Redbox online than at the kiosk, although info about movies available for physical rental comes up in search results alongside digital availability. That's handy for finding all options to see a particular movie you want to watch, including the option to watch for free with ads.

You can also browse only the free selections, although they're a little buried on the site's home page. In addition to on-demand selections, Redbox also features FAST channels for a variety of movie genres and TV series, as well as news, music videos, and more. It's not as extensive as the FAST selections on some other sites, but it offers a decent sampling of what Redbox has to offer.

  • Wider selection of movies than Redbox kiosks
  • Extensive lineup of live channels
  • Free offerings integrated with paid rentals
  • Free section is somewhat difficult to navigate

Plex app icon on an Apple TV

Plex is so much more than just a place to watch free movies online, although it has plenty of free options available if that's what you're looking for. It's designed as a one-stop destination for all your movie-watching needs, so you can organize your personal collection of digital movies or build watch lists for various subscription streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Alongside those functions, Plex also includes plenty of movies to watch free with ads, which can be integrated with the rest of your movie library.

If you'd rather not sign up for an account, you can still easily just stream movies and TV shows for free with ads, and Plex features a similar range of selections as other sites that focus solely on free offerings, with more than 20,000 titles available. Plex also offers various FAST channels to complement its free on-demand lineup.

  • Integrated service for digital movie library and watchlist
  • On-demand selections and free live channels
  • Free selections only a small part of the service

Shout TV

The free movie streaming site for boutique film distributor Shout Factory, Shout TV focuses on genre fare and cult classics, along with a range of other free selections. It's home to FAST channels for cult favorites like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and ALF , as well as on-demand episodes of those and other offbeat TV series. The movie selection is heavy on horror, martial arts, sci-fi, and other cult genres. While Shout may not offer the breadth of other free movie websites, it's more expertly curated.

One thing available on Shout that even most subscription streaming services don't offer is commentary tracks, which are now mostly found only on DVD and Blu-ray releases. If you want to hear director John Carpenter talk about his horror anthology Body Bags , director Larry Cohen talk about cult monster movie Q: The Winged Serpent , or other filmmakers and actors comment on their work, then Shout is the free movie website to check out.

Shout Factory TV

  • Curated focus on cult and genre fare
  • Commentary tracks
  • Smaller selection than other services

YouTube app in an app folder

Everyone knows YouTube as the top place for video content online, with literally hundreds of millions of user-uploaded videos of every type. But YouTube also functions as a free movie streaming site, with an official selection of movies available to watch with ads. Given YouTube's sometimes chaotic free-for-all of content, it may be tough to find a particular movie to stream for free. It's possible to browse a list of YouTube's free movies online, but that listing isn't easy to locate from YouTube's home page.

YouTube's official free offerings are far from the only free movies available on the site, though, and there are dozens of legal YouTube channels that offer free movies, from public-domain selections to small independent films looking to find an audience. If you can wade through the reams of content and wrangle your way through YouTube's algorithm, it's possible to find plenty of hidden gems along with the more popular free selections.

  • Free mainstream movies with ads
  • Public domain and indie films uploaded by users

Are you trying to watch YouTube on a school computer? Most schools and organizations restrict access to YouTube and other websites. However, there are some ways to bypass these blocks. You can use a custom link that disguises YouTube as Google Translate, create a bookmark with a special code, or use a proxy website. Keep in mind that attempting to unblock blocked features may result in punishment by your school or organization. This wikiHow will show you how to watch YouTube when it's blocked on your school computer.

Things You Should Know

  • The best way to access YouTube at school is to use a VPN on your phone or laptop.
  • Copy and paste the "unblock code" into a new Google Chrome bookmark. Click the bookmark on a restricted video.
  • Use a proxy website or your phone's hotspot to bypass school restrictions.

Step 1 Download a VPN.

  • To get started, you'll need to create an account with your email address.
  • If you're using a school Chromebook or PC laptop without an admin password, the school may prevent you from installing apps. In this case, you'll need to install the VPN on your own device, such as your phone, tablet, or laptop.

Step 2 Launch Proton VPN.

  • You can also manually select which region to connect to.
  • When successful, you'll see Connected at the top. You should then be able to access YouTube on the web and in the mobile app.

Step 1 Open Google Chrome.

  • Use this method to bypass restrictions on your school's Chromebook.

Step 2 Enable bookmarks

  • javascript:(function () {if (window.location.toString().includes('www.youtube.com/watch?v%27))%20{%20window.open(%27https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/%27%20+%20window.location.toString().split(%27=%27)[1])%20}})()
  • Make sure you don't add any extra spaces at the beginning or end of the code.

Step 4 Right-click the bookmarks toolbar and click Add page….

  • Your code will be ready to use.

Step 8 Search for a video using Google.

  • If you have a specific YouTube video link, paste it into the address bar.
  • When the video is blocked, you'll see: Video unavailable. This video is unavailable with Restricted Mode enabled.

Step 9 While on the video page, click the code bookmark.

  • This will run the code to open the unblocked video in a new tab.

Step 10 Play the video.

  • Grab sites from multiple different proxy lists.

Step 5 Email the list to yourself or write it down.

  • Using your phone as the network connection will bypass any restrictions placed on the school network. However, this could get expensive if you don't have unlimited data on your phone.

Step 2 Open the Settings app on your iPhone or Android.

  • Android: Tap "More" in the "Wireless & Networks" section. Tap "Tethering & portable hotspot".
  • iOS : Tap "Personal Hotspot". [1] X Research source

Step 4 Turn on your phone's hotspot.

  • Android: Check the "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" box.
  • iOS: Toggle the "Personal Hotspot" toggle on.

Step 5 Get the wireless password.

  • Android: Tap "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot". Check the "Show password" box.
  • iOS: Tap "Wi-Fi Password".

Step 6 Connect to the hotspot on the computer.

  • On Windows 10, click the network icon near the clock at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Select your phone, click Connect , and enter the Wi-Fi password. [2] X Trustworthy Source Microsoft Support Technical support and product information from Microsoft. Go to source
  • On Windows 11, click the network icon near the clock at the bottom-right corner, click the arrow next to the current connection, then select your phone and click Connect . Enter the password to connect to the hotspot.
  • On a Mac, Click the network icon at the top-right corner, then click the name of your phone hotspot. Enter the password to connect.
  • On a Chromebook, click the Wi-Fi icon, then select your phone to connect. Enter the password when prompted. [3] X Research source

Step 7 Connect your phone to the computer via USB (optional).

  • Some school administrators may block using Google Translate, as it's a known method for getting around school rules. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Open a new tab or window.

  • This is the link for a Google Translate page.

Step 4 Copy and paste the YouTube video's link into the address bar.

  • For example, your full link should look like: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ .

Step 5 Press ↵ Enter to load your link.

  • If your teachers use alternative services, use those to reduce the risk of being caught on web monitoring services.
  • Use one with an SSL certificate. To tell if a website has an SSL certificate, its URL should say https rather than http, or there is a green padlock icon next to it. This allows encryption to prevent being caught if the internet you are using is monitored.

Step 2 Search for your video using a search engine.

  • Some other options that may preserve your privacy are duckduckgo.com or startpage.com

About This Article

Rain Kengly

One way you can access YouTube at school is by using Google Translate to trick the school’s website blocker. To make your computer think it’s using a Google page instead of YouTube, go to translate.google.com in your web browser and change the language on the left-hand box to anything except “Detect language.” On the right-hand box, change the language to English, or any other language you can read. However, make sure that the left and right boxes aren’t set to the same language since this will lead to an error. Then, open the YouTube video you want to watch in a different browser window and copy the URL. Once you have the URL, paste it into the left-hand box in Google Translate and click the link that appears in the right-hand box to watch your video. Kanopy partners with thousands of public libraries and universities to provide ad-free shows and movies. You can use your library card or school email address to access content on your TV, mobile phone, tablet or online. I entered my library card number and then used my name and email address to create a Kanopy account.

Once you’re signed in, you can watch a certain number of videos per month . The number of available videos per month varies by library. In the top-right corner of the screen, you’ll see a number indicating how many “ tickets ” you have remaining for the month or how many programs you can watch. You can enjoy unlimited plays in the Kanopy Kids section.

In addition to free movies, Kanopy also provides access to free documentaries on culture, the arts, business, education, global studies, health and more. As I scrolled through the selection, I didn’t see many titles I recognized. Still, the vast selection of indie movies, documentaries and world cinema titles was enough to keep me browsing through several pages.

Once you’ve found a film you’d like to watch, you can click on the title for additional information, related titles and comments (which can often include helpful recommendations). Most videos also include ratings, subtitles and transcripts.

Kanopy is available as a   mobile app on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices. You can also access the TV app via Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, Roku, Telstra TV or Chromecast. If you don’t have access to any of these devices, you can also connect your computer to your television using an HDMI cable to watch Kanopy on your TV.

  • There are no advertisements.
  • You’ll find a wide variety of topics especially if you’re looking for documentaries or educational films.
  • You are limited to watching a certain number of videos per month, which varies by library.
  • Content is not downloadable.
  • You’ll have to log in or create an account to stream.

Owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Crackle is a streaming service that features original content as well free movies and TV shows acquired from other companies.

You’ll find both old and new shows/movies in a wide variety of genres that feature hidden talent as well as famous names. As I scrolled through the featured categories, I recognized The Rock, John Travolta, Ashton Kutcher, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gene Wilder, Chevy Chase and more. There’s something for everyone at Crackle with plenty of featured categories including “Broken Vows,” “Deadtime,” “ Careless, ” “Hats Off to Christmas!” and “My Own Love Song.”

This free-to-use entertainment network is available on many popular platforms including web browsers, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, Roku, Android and Apple devices. For a full list of supported devices, visit the website .

With Crackle, you don’t have to create an account to start streaming . But if you want to save any films to watch later, you will have to log in. Creating an account is easy and free; simply click “sign in” on the homepage to get started.

Whether you create a free account or start watching right away, you’ll still have to sit through a few advertisements. That means you will have to disable any ad blockers before streaming online . According to the website , running commercials with available programming allows Crackle to ensure that the service remains free.

Crackle video player

Before a movie begins, you’ll see a couple of ads. After it starts, you’ll have periodic commercial breaks throughout the film. The video in the screenshot above is one hour and 40 minutes long, and you can see that there are eight advertisement breaks after it begins. During the ad breaks, I had the option to choose whether I wanted to interact with an ad for 30 seconds or watch regular ads for a normal break (around 2.5 minutes).

On your screen below the film, you’ll see options to add it to a watch later list (if you’re logged in to a free account), share it on social media, see details about the film and check out similar recommended films. In addition to the details and description, you’ll also see “Why it Crackles,” which is a short blurb about what Crackle thinks makes the film great.

  • The site provides excellent variety and streaming quality.
  • You can choose how long the ads are.
  • You don’t have to create an account to stream.
  • Some movies and shows are available for only a limited time due to agreements with programming providers.
  • Content can’t be viewed offline.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to stream available movies and shows , add videos to a watchlist and save your place if you need to pause the video and resume watching at a different time or on a different device.

No matter how you choose to log in or which device you use, know that videos on Amazon Freevee can’t be purchased or downloaded to be watched offline. That means you will have to watch a few advertisements. In the video pictured below, you can see that there are six ads in this 90-minute movie.

As you’re watching a show or movie, you have the option to enable the “X-Ray” feature. This shows small pop-ups in the corner of the screen with interesting facts relevant to the scene you’re watching. On the other side of the screen, you can choose to adjust closed captions, video quality, audio and screen size.

When I visited Amazon Freevee, I found several popular titles in the “Recently Added” section including “A Dog’s Purpose,” “Facing The Giants,” “Legacy Peak” and “The Nanny Diaries .” In addition to hit TV shows and top Hollywood releases, you’ll also find Freevee originals and a whole section of “Hidden Gems.”

  • You’ll find both popular titles and hidden gems.
  • You can adjust the video quality (up to HD).
  • You can see interesting facts throughout films with the “X-Ray” feature.
  • The selection is limited.

On Pluto TV, you’ll find hundreds of free TV channels and thousands of free movies online. The internet television service offers free, ad-supported content that includes both live TV and on-demand titles .

You can access Pluto TV online using your computer, iOS or Android device. You can also stream Pluto TV on Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, PlayStation, Roku, Samsung and Vizio devices. I used my computer to visit the website online.

When I first got to the website, I clicked “Watch Free Now” to get started. From there, I was able to choose from “Live TV” or “On Demand” at the top of the screen. “On Demand” features several categories including the genres listed above in addition to popular movies, top TV series, new movies and more. If you’re looking for live TV, you’ll find a huge selection of free channels.

Pluto TV Live TV channel guide

You can browse live channels by category including featured, movies, news, reality, comedy, classic, sports, kids and more. You’ll see hundreds of popular television networks including TV Land, MTV, CSI and Comedy Central.

With both the live channels and on-demand titles, you’ll see periodic advertisements in the same way that you would with traditional TV . In my experience, ads tended to pop up around every eight minutes.

You won’t need to create an account to begin streaming content , but it’s free to sign up for one if you want. An account allows you to keep track of your favorite movies and channels as well as receive updates on new content.

  • You’ll find a wide variety of on-demand titles as well as live TV channels.
  • You don’t need an account to stream.
  • The ads are frequent.

The Roku Channel is another free ad-supported resource that provides access to streamable content including live TV and on-demand titles.

You don’t have to have a Roku device to access The Roku Channel. It’s also available on a web browser as well as iOS, Android and Amazon Fire TV devices among others.

I used the computer to access The Roku Channel’s website and watch free movies online. I was immediately prompted to sign in or create an account to access premium subscriptions, continue watching movies where I left off, and get personalized recommendations. Still, an account isn’t required to stream content . I did have to disable my ad blocker before watching anything though.

In the movie above, you can see that there are six advertisement breaks throughout the film (1 hour, 37 minutes), which means you can expect an ad about every 16 minutes. For most movies, closed captions are also available.

When I checked out The Roku Channel, I saw several popular on-demand titles including “Chad,” “The Great American Baking Show,” “Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story” and “Honest Renovations.” Live TV channels included NBC News Now, ion, Game Show Central, Crime 360 and Grit among others.

  • You don’t have to create an account to stream content.
  • On-demand titles and live TV are available.
  • There are relatively few ads compared to other free movie sites.

If you can access YouTube, you can access free videos. In addition to original content uploaded directly by users, you can also check out a wide variety of free movies available on YouTube. While YouTube TV requires a subscription, there are select titles that you can watch for free.

To see the current selection of movies that are free to watch, visit this YouTube page . You’ll find several popular kids’ titles, documentaries and classic favorites. While you won’t have to create an account in order to browse or watch select free movies , you may have to sign in to verify your age if the title is rated R.

Once you’ve chosen a movie to watch, simply click on it to begin streaming. The ads work just like they would on any other YouTube video, and the media player should also look pretty familiar.

You won’t be required to create an account in order to stream media on Popcornflix , but you will have to pause or disable any ad blockers. The advertisements work more like an ad you would see while playing a game online, and you have the option to skip some ads after a brief preview.

--> Anime (action, adventure, comedy, drama, thriller, and more) and Drama (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and more) Anime App (phone/tablet), Computer (website) and TV (TV app/casting)

Crunchyroll is a Funimation company that streams anime in more than 200 countries and territories. If you’re a fan of anime, this is the free streaming resource for you. You’ll find both popular titles and Crunchyroll originals available for free.

Scrolling through popular anime shows, I saw more than 1,300 episodes of “One Piece,” more than 170 episodes of “Black Clover” and more than 140 episodes of “My Hero Academia” when I checked out Crunchyroll. Other popular titles include “Attack on Titan,” “Naruto” and hundreds more . The majority of the content has Japanese voice acting with English subtitles, but there are a few shows that are dubbed in English .

While you don’t need to create an account in order to stream content via Crunchyroll, you will see advertisements prompting you to pay for a   premium membership . The membership lets you watch unlimited ad-free shows, get access to new episodes an hour after they premiere and download shows for offline viewing. Still, you can stream online for free (with ads). Just note that the newest episodes may not be available immediately.

When you choose a video, you’ll be able to start streaming it online instantly without having to log in. If you want to add the video to a queue to watch later, you’ll need to create a free account. I didn’t have to disable my ad blocker to begin streaming, and ads appeared only a couple of times in a 23-minute episode.

  • You’ll find infrequent, short advertisements throughout the content.
  • Shows, manga and games are available in addition to movies.
  • New releases are available only to premium members.
  • Content can’t be downloaded unless you have a premium subscription.

Instead of seeing a media player and watching a video directly on Yidio.com , you can instantly search for titles across a variety of other platforms including Tubi, Vudu, Crackle, The Roku Channel and 180+ more .

While you will see videos from paid-only streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, Netflix and others, you can filter your results by free movies or free TV shows .

For most of the video links on Yidio, you can watch online via any web browser, with your smartphone or tablet, using a streaming media player or on game consoles. For a quick reference of which streaming services are supported on which devices, check out this resource from Yidio.

You don’t need to create an account to use Yidio , but signing up for one is free if you’d like to keep track of your favorites. Once you’ve found a video you want to watch, simply click the title to see where it’s available for free.

Yidio movie details including links to watch it online

For example, I clicked on “The Shining.” I can see that it’s available on some paid subscription services and for rent online at Amazon, Vudu and elsewhere. But it appears to be totally free through Amazon Freevee. Once I clicked the play symbol next to it, I was redirected to Amazon Freevee’s website to watch the movie for free.

If you have a specific movie in mind, Yidio is a great resource to check and see if it’s available for free online.

  • You’ll find thousands of movies from multiple sources, several of which are free.
  • You don’t need an account to use Yidio.
  • No movies are available directly on Yidio, which means you’ll always have to visit a second website.
  • Not all movies are available for free.

Final Thoughts

All of these websites are worth checking out if you’re looking for free movies online.

If you’re looking for popular names in Hollywood and hit TV shows or movies, check out Crackle or Amazon Freevee. If you have a library card, you can visit Hoopla or Kanopy for a completely ad-free experience . Crunchyroll is a great resource for watching free anime shows and movies, while Tubi and YouTube provide access to a great selection of movies for families and kids.

For Live TV, check out Pluto TV and The Roku Channel. If you’re more interested in independent films and hidden gems, you might find something you’ll enjoy on Popcornflix or Vudu. Finally, if you have a specific title in mind, check Yidio to see if it’s available for free on any of these websites.

No matter where you decide to watch free movies online, just make sure you’re doing it legally and safely . While you may have to disable your ad blocker online or enter your email to create a free account, you shouldn’t have to download anything to your computer or enter any payment information.

You’ll see a long list of movies that are Free with Ads, or available to rent at a low cost. Enjoy must-see classics like Fat Albert and foreign hits like the Ip Man movies.

Tubi is a completely-free movie service featuring News and popular old-school action films, comedies, horror movies and so much more. There are also family-friendly movies that you can watch with the kids.

There is no option to upgrade without ads, as the platform is free all around. The ads are what keep this service, with more than  35,000 viewing options, free . You can create an account quickly and start watching on a computer, or you can pair it to your TV with  an activation code .

Vudu TV

There are plenty of movies for free on Vudu if you don’t mind the ads. There are a wide variety of genres that can satisfy everyone in the family, from crime movies and documentaries, to rom-coms and international films.

If you want more content, you have the option to add payment information and rent or buy one of 200,000 or more popular titles, even recent theater releases. Vudu is part of the Fandango family, a brand etched in the brains of movie lovers nationwide, so there is no shortage of films you can access.

5. Pluto TV

Pluto TV gives you immediate access to more than 200 live channels after a quick sign-up option. There’s also a free movie database that houses a lengthy list of on-demand movies and TV shows, including reality TV hits and popular movie classics.

Some of the live streaming channels are a little non-traditional but they cater to specific niches, like a channel that streams horror films 24/7 or one that exclusively streams indie films. But you can still enjoy traditional fare like news and regular cable channels.

Check out the  channel lineup  to start watching live TV now for free or choose the  On-Demand option  to look through movies.

6. Popcornflix

Popcornflix has many  free movie options and some original programming . The streaming service boasts “no movie is more than two clicks away.” This is a rather unique channel particularly popular with vintage horror movie fans. But the service also includes a healthy selection of films in other genres, like martial arts, medieval, westerns and so much more.

You don’t need to log in to start watching. The channel states it is 100% legal. It’s part of the Crackle family of streaming services, owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. You can go to the account page and “Opt out of Ads personalization” if you’d like.

Crackle TV

This streaming channel is also part of the same company that brings you Popcornflix, so you’ll see some familiar movie titles if you’ve already browsed through Popcornflix’s fun database.

You do have to sign up and then you’ll be  directed to the main page  where you can choose videos or movies to watch. There is some overlap in shows available on Popcornflix, but this is much less of a niche channel than Popcornflix.

Kanopy is a free streaming option that is only available for people with public library cards, which are also usually free and an amazing amenity for the local community. You’ll be impressed with the movies on here, as it includes some recognizable classics and cinema from all over the world.

Find out if your library is a part of the Kanopy program by doing quick search  to find out. The service was created to be an extension of a library card, only instead of checking out books, you’re checking out movies or documentaries.

9. Viki

Viki calls itself the “ Heart of Asian Entertainment ” and is the best source for Korean dramas (with still some notable selections from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan). You’ll find endless classics you can binge back-to-back and even dramas that are still airing in Asia. Trust us, there is no shortage of available content to keep you entertained.

One of the fun features of Viki is the Watch Party option, where viewers can stream live movies and shows together while commenting in the live chat. If you find yourself watching a movie alone, join in is viewing party for some additional company.

While there is free content on Viki, there is an option to upgrade to a “Viki Pass”, which will cost up to $10 a month if you want additional content and an ad-free viewing experience.

10. Asiancrush

AsianCrushTV

Another channel that is dedicated to the growing adoration of Asian films and shows is  Asiancrush . The service has an impressive library of Asian films, including popular award-winning films but also some lesser-known indie flicks.

When you create an account, be sure to select the “Start for Free” account, or else it will prompt you for credit card information. When you’re looking at the list of movies and shows, look for an orange box with a crown in it at the top right of the title. That signals it is a premium movie and not free.

11. Freevee

Freevee is fueled by retail powerhouse Amazon, so you know it’s legal, legit, and loaded with great movies and shows. Freevee is available  through the app stores , but you’ll need an Amazon login to get in. If you have Fire TV, you already have free access to this channel. If you go to the Freevee website to watch a movie, it will take you to the Amazon page for viewing. Amazon details how to get Freevee on a variety of devices on its website.

12. The Roku Channel

If you have a Roku device, The Roku Channel is already available to you for free. You can upgrade to a paid level of service, but with the plethora of content available, you’ll still have plenty of options with the free version. The  web version of The Roku Channel  is also available to watch live or On Demand content from a desktop or laptop.

Plex TV

A quick sign-up gets you right into the Plex website and access to its “ Free Movies & TV ” content. You’ll have quite a lot to choose from, as it covers a long list of genres , including action films, animated flicks, crime movies and more.

You can also add your own videos, shows, and media of any kind to your own folder on this site. This is where a slippery legal slope comes in. If you upload a DVD from home to this site and share it, that probably is illegal. If you made a home movie and share it, you likely won’t get in legal trouble. Some call this website a harvester of piracy while others say it’s one of the best streaming sites out there.

Sling offers a variety of free movies and TV shows at no cost. You just  sign up on the website  or app without having to enter any payment information. You can watch live news, popular movies or highly rated shows. There’s an on-demand section as well, among many in the large list of free content .

Are free movies sites legal?

Some are and some aren’t. It is up to you as the consumer to do your due diligence before subscribing to a service. Most reputable companies will have an “About” section at the bottom of its website where you can investigate the parent company or legality of a company.

Here are some ways to tell if a streaming website is legal:

  • Any website that asks you to download something suspicious or enter in your private information to watch a free movie can be a red flag. You also should never have to install a VPN to watch movies.
  • Being able to download movies and save them to your computer is another red flag.
  • Also, any legit movie website won’t look like it was made in 1998 and have extremely poor picture quality.
  • If you’re being bombarded with pop-up ads, it’s most likely that the streams are illegal.

Do I need an account to watch on free movie websites?

Just about all free streaming websites are going to require an email address, your birthday, gender identification, and a confirmation of that email address.

Will there be ads while I watch movies?

Yes, most free streaming websites will contain ads to help pay for the service. Although the website may be free to users, they still need to pay for the content by making money through ads.

You can download an Ad Blocker to avoid some of the commercials but they may not completely work to block every single ad . You’ll likely still see fewer ads than if you didn’t have an ad blocker, though. However, if you don’t want to download an ad blocker, putting up with some ads is a small inconvenience for something that’s being provided at no additional cost to you.

Movie sites at school FAQS

Can i use a free vpn to unblock movie sites at school.

Although there are some free VPNs available that you can trust, it’s important to remember that the vast majority of free services are incredibly insecure . Free VPNs have been known to lack reliable encryption, follow dodgy data practices, and have apps that suffer vulnerabilities or contain malicious code. As a result, free VPNs are not suitable for gaining online privacy.

In addition, free VPNs are often slow or have data caps that make them unsuitable for accessing streaming services, torrenting, or gaming. In case you’re worried about wasting your precious cash, the money back guarantees offered by the VPNs on this list will allow you to try a full, unrestricted VPN with robust security.

Can a VPN hide my web history from my university?

Yes. The encrypted tunnel provided by a reliable VPN service is designed to guarantee online privacy. Furthermore, a VPN proxies your DNS requests, making it impossible for your school to track your web history.

However, please remember that whenever you use a computer that belongs to the university, your history may accumulate on that device. Therefore, it’s important to use private browsing mode along with a reputable VPN to ensure you don’t leave any data in the browser itself.

How to watch Netflix using a URL shortener

If you don’t have a VPN subscription or your school’s computer website blocker is weak, using a URL shortener can help you watch Netflix. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Open the web browser on your school’s computer. For best results, use Google Chrome.
  • Visit the Netflix site and copy the URL from the address bar.
  • Go to a URL Shortener website in your browser. We recommend TinyURL.
  • Visit TinyURL and paste the link in the box.
  • Click “ Make TinyURL .”
  • Copy and paste the customized link into a new tab on your browser.
  • Press Enter .
  • Access Netflix shows on your school computer.

How to access Netflix using the Google cache

To bypass a Netflix block, you can use Google-cached pages. These are copies of web pages that Google indexes for backup. Follow the steps below to use the Google cache.

  • Open Google Chrome on your school computer.
  • Go to the Netflix Website.
  • Click the arrow or three dots beside the Netflix URL on the Google search results page.
  • In the “ About this result ” page on the left, select “ Cached .”
  • Access the Netflix website’s cached version on the school computer.

It’s essential to note that this method is only effective when your school’s computer has a cached version of Netflix. Otherwise, you’ll need a VPN to encrypt your traffic and access the streaming service.

Netflix

How do I unblock Netflix on my school Chromebook?

Many schools set Chromebooks up solely for academic purposes because IT administrators can easily manage them through a web-based console . Hence, accessing popular apps and websites like Netflix on the device may be difficult.

If you want to unblock Netflix on your Chromebook, you need a VPN service that is compatible with Chromebooks . You must also change the Chromebook’s permissions to open blocked websites.

Follow these steps to unblock Netflix on your school’s Chromebook.

  • Open Chrome
  • Visit the Netflix website.
  • Once it loads, three icons, such as “ Lock ,” “ Info ,” and “ Dangerous ,” will appear on the left of the web address.
  • Click “ Site Settings ” to change the permissions settings.

Can I unblock Netflix with a free VPN?

It’s difficult to unblock Netflix with a free VPN. Many free VPNs don’t have streaming functionalities , as they lack the resources to bypass strict VPN connection blocks . Even if you’re lucky to watch Netflix with a free service, don’t expect it to function flawlessly.

With free VPNs’ data limitations, you can only stream your favorite movies briefly. You’ll likely experience performance issues, crowded servers, and slower speeds.  Privacy-wise, it’s also not advisable to opt for freebie VPNs . These providers generate revenue by monitoring users’ online activities, saving the info, and selling it to third-party advertisers.

We recommend you use the free version of premium VPN services like NordVPN and ExpressVPN . These providers have consistently worked excellently with popular streaming platforms, including Netflix. We’ve conducted several tests into completely free VPNs and could not find one that could reliably unblock the streaming platform.

Netflix is not working on the computer – What should I do?

Many academic institutions block entertainment sites like Spotify , YouTube , Netflix, Facebook , and Hulu . For some reason, they believe it will affect students’ ability to study .

However, there are situations where accessing sites like Netflix can be particularly helpful, especially when you want to watch documentaries, reference media, or take study breaks. Thankfully, quick fixes enable you to access the streaming service.

1. Reinstall the graphics driver

You may be unable to watch Netflix on the school computer due to a faulty graphics driver. Below are the steps to install a graphics driver.

  • Go to the “ Device Manager .”
  • Hold the Windows + R keys on the keyboard to open the “ Run ” command prompt.
  • Type “ devmgmt.msc ” in the box, and press “ Enter .”
  • In the “ Device Manager ” window, select “ Display adapters .”
  • Right-click the “ Graphic adapter ” on the computer, then choose “ Uninstall .”
  • Go to the Taskbar and press the Windows icon to launch the Start menu .
  • Click the power icon, and select “ Restart .”
  • Stream Netflix’s latest series without issues.

2. Update your windows

You must update your Windows operating system frequently to get new features and secure your computer . Indeed, software updates are a hassle, but every time you ignore them, your Windows OS becomes vulnerable.

Outdated Windows can also cause compatibility problems with websites like Netflix. Follow these steps to update your Windows and optimize performance.

  • Hold the Windows + I keys to start “ Settings ” on the computer.
  • Choose “ Update & Security .”
  • Select “ Windows Update .”
  • Tap “ Download and install .”
  • Stream the exclusive content on Netflix.

Other ways to unblock Netflix at school/work

Watch Netflix on school computer

Despite a VPN being the most secure way to bypass geo-blocks, there are various approaches you can follow to unblock Netflix on your school computer. You can use a public web proxy , a Tor browser, a Smart DNS service, or remote desktop software.

These methods often come in handy when a VPN is inaccessible in your location. Below are other ways to unblock Netflix without a VPN connection.

1. Use a Tor browser

Tor browser is an excellent tool for unblocking Netflix at no cost. This browser prevents third parties like the government and your ISP provider from prying on your online activities . Not only does it mask the sites you visit, but it prevents them from identifying your physical location.

Tor browser integrates excellently with Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, and Mac, except for Chromebooks. Moreover, the provider operates an open-source software , showing its dedication to improving its service. Sadly, this feature has a downside. It can expose your information to hackers .

From a security standpoint, it protects your data by switching your connection around a distributed network of relays worldwide. You can hide your IP address to access Netflix with the Tor browser .

Follow these steps to configure Tor on the school computer:

  • Download and install the Tor browser . Go to the Tor website and tap the installation file to launch the tool.
  • Launch the browser and select “ Configure Connection .” The settings option will appear for you to customize the Tor browser.
  • Go to the Netflix app or website.
  • Now, you can watch movies without restrictions .

Unlike VPNs, you need to manually disconnect the Tor browser before exiting it. Once you’re done watching Netflix, simply click the “ Close ” button to end all connections.

2. Use a Smart DNS

A Smart DNS accomplishes the same goal as a VPN by letting you access restricted websites. However, this tool doesn’t encrypt your data like VPNs , so it can’t protect your online activities or keep them anonymous.

It cannot protect your sensitive information, personal data, and internet traffic from the prying eyes of third parties . Therefore, if your focus is more on speed than privacy, Smart DNS is better for unblocking Netflix. With it, you won’t experience unnecessary speed drops while browsing.

It is also an excellent option for accessing geo-blocked speed-sensitive services, like streaming platforms from anywhere, whether at school or work. Many Smart DNS providers combine proxy and DNS to offer an efficient service. Through this, you can change your location. For example, this tool can trick Netflix into believing you’re in America by servicing your queries in the country .

Since Smart DNS is compatible with most internet-capable devices, it’s excellent for unblocking Netflix on Chromebook . Reputable VPN providers like NordVPN, Private Internet Access, and Surfshark offer this tool as a significant service. You can also get it from popular standalone Smart DNS providers like Unlocator and UnblockUS .

3. Use proxy servers

If you want quick access to Netflix, a proxy server should be your go-to option. This unblocking tool functions as a gateway between the internet and your device to hide your real IP address .

Sadly, it doesn’t provide complete security like a VPN, and you may experience congestion on its servers. Needless to say, it can bypass restrictions without bans and offer improved performance .

Once you connect to a proxy, it replaces your real IP address with that of its proxy servers . This process then changes your device’s traffic, making Netflix read your traffic as coming from an unrestricted location.

To watch US Netflix, you must connect to a proxy server in America . Doing this will make your requests seem like they originate from the US. We recommend HTTPS proxies for excellent performance.

4. Use StreamLocator

Unblocking Netflix libraries on a computer or Smart TV with a StreamLocator is child’s play. This tool changes your real location to appear like you’re in the US . Unlike a VPN, you don’t need to install software on your device to use Streamlocator.

All you need to do is plug your computer into the router to access geo-blocked content. StreamLocator works excellently with Android, iPhone, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV.

Using this router to watch Netflix won’t affect your network speed. Besides, it unblocks other streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ .

How to bypass school WiFi restrictions

Unsurprisingly, school administrators place WiFi restrictions to filter out inappropriate content and allow educational content only. So, even during breaks and free periods, you can’t access social media, movie websites , or streaming platforms like Netflix.

Here are simple ways to unblock your school’s WiFi restriction .

  • Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) : A VPN is the easiest way to unblock your school WiFi and access blocked content. Choose VPNs with obfuscation servers, as they enable you to bypass WiFi restrictions and firewalls that don’t allow VPN connections.
  • Opt for a Smart DNS server : Smart DNS combines proxy and DNS technology. Although it doesn’t encrypt your traffic, it helps bypass restrictions without triggering blocking mechanisms.
  • Use the Tor browser : This browser is more secure than other browsers. It can hide your traffic to bypass geo-blocks.
  • Use Google Translate : Aside from translating, this technology can function as a proxy server to bypass geo-restrictions. Simply launch Google Translate and type the website’s name.
  • Connect to a proxy website or server : Proxy servers are excellent for bypassing restrictions as they can encrypt your internet traffic and provide faster speeds.
  • URL shortener : Rather than using the restricted website’s name, use the shortened version.
  • Opt for portable apps : These apps work without installing them on your device. All you need to do is copy them to your USB drive. Common portable apps include the Tor browser and Firefox browser .
  • Install a portable OS : This method only works if your school computer permits booting from USB drives. Simply install a portable operating system on your USB to alter your device’s settings.
  • Use the IP address of the website : Instead of using the website’s name, use its IP address to access its content. This way, you can bypass any domain blocks.

How do I remove school restrictions from my laptop?

If you’re unable to access particular sites on your laptop, it’s possible that the school’s IT admin blocked it. But don’t lose hope. You can remove this restriction in just five minutes.

Here’s how:

  • Right-click the Start menu and open “ Settings .”
  • Tap “ Accounts ” in the “ Settings ” window.
  • Select the “ Other Users ” tab.
  • Select “ Add someone else to this PC .”
  • Add a local administrator account or an existing Microsoft Account to the computer.

Is it illegal to use a VPN for Netflix?

Using a VPN to stream Netflix isn’t illegal . A VPN is an unblocking service that enables you to access the content you paid for on restricted WiFI networks. It is not piracy. Although Netflix uses a proxy detection technology to block VPNs and restrict users from watching geo-blocked content, you can use one.

When you use a VPN to access Netflix, you use its IP-hiding feature to bypass geo-blocks. Indeed, this act is against Netflix’s terms of service, but it doesn’t make using a VPN illegal. Neither does it attract any punishment. At most, Netflix will only terminate your access to its library once it detects VPN use.

However, accessing multiple Netflix libraries at once or downloading content for piracy is illegal as it violates the streaming service’s licensing and copyright. If you live in countries like China, Russia, and UAE , which have banned the usage of VPNs, you may get into trouble for using this unblocking tool for Netflix .

Keep in mind that while using a VPN for Netflix isn’t illegal in society at large, it may be punishable by your school, depending on its policy.

US netflix

We recommend NordVPN. It provides quality features like a kill switch, 24/7 live chat, and split tunneling. The VPN is compatible with multiple devices and optimized for speed and reliability to offer you the best streaming experience possible.

No, a VPN offers more online security and privacy than a proxy server. While proxies function as an intermediary computer or server through which you can access the internet, a VPN encrypts all internet traffic to ensure anonymity. Nevertheless, depending on your need, a proxy may sometimes be better suited than a VPN. For example, a proxy is an excellent alternative if the website you want to access has blocked VPN connections.

The best way to unblock Netflix on school premises is through a trustworthy VPN service provider.

Each premium VPN featured in this article has excellent speeds, extensive server coverage, and maximum privacy protection to enable you to bypass restrictions. You can leverage a Tor browser, Streamlocator, Smart DNS, and proxy server to unblock Netflix without a VPN.

Definitely! A streaming error occurs when Netflix detects an IP address from a restricted location. To fix this issue, it’s ideal to use a reliable VPN service. Opt for VPN providers with an extensive server list and fast connection speeds. For example, NordVPN has a network of over 5600 servers in 59 countries. Hence, if you experience a streaming error, you can quickly connect to another server.

Schools usually restrict access to entertainment websites and platforms because they distract students from schoolwork. Some schools also block online activities like file sharing, as students use the technology to share copyrighted files.

[Updated: 8/1/24] Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

Which movies should you watch, though, now that you know where to find them? Rotten Tomatoes did some digging and sorted through the free movie catalogs of Peacock, Fandango At Home, Tubi, Freevee, YouTube, and Crackle to find the 100 best movies available to watch for free right now. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's movie streaming service includes tons of well-known free films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from dramas and comedies to action and horror films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for websites with free movies. This list was last updated in August to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

All the movies you can find through these websites are also available in their respective movie streaming app . Most are available through streaming devices , too.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now on Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending On Social — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Friday, Gossip Girl, Sleepover, The Fast and the Furious, and Shooter.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free films.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies managed directly by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Project Gemini and Empire State ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: Employee of the Month, LOL, Open 24 Hours , and In Time.

Something you can't get with YouTube but that is supported by most of these movie sites is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free films. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

There's a lot to explore here, including original films, but I'll get you started with these titles that are some of the more popular choices: Split, The Turning, Hotel Transylvania 3, and My Mom's New Boyfriend.

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Provides a 'Last Chance to Watch' section.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, Whoa. Keanu is on Pluto TV , 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Road Trip, School of Rock, Red Eye , and Equilibrium .

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists The Girl Next Door, Cruel Intentions, Scary Movie 4, Movie 43, and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, European Production, Asia's Top Cinema, LGBTQI+, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some movies that were trending recently include Lady Chatterley's Lover , Dark Souls, Raven, Delicious, and The Frame.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Summer Binge-a-Thon , Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: 2010: Moby Dick, Colonia, Wes Craven's Summer of Fear , King of the Lost World , and Sanctuary.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming device. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another website with free movies. They often change, but some that I've seen recently include End of Summer Laughs, Dinosaurs & Dragons, Leading Men, Retro Action Movies , and Music on the Small Screen.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use Kanopy's signup page to search for your library , whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job of providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include God's Own Country, Lady Bird, The Bookshop, and Anomalisa.

There's also an entirely separate section for kid movies at Kanopy . My son's old enough now to watch more mature movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

Rakuten viki, internet archive, how to watch free movies online: the 12 best websites for streaming.

We live in a world with an embarrassment of riches when it comes to streaming channels, but the cost of subscribing to the best streaming services like Netflix , Hulu , Max , Peacock and Disney Plus adds up — your monthly streaming bill can be as pricey as an old-fashioned cable subscription, or even worse.

The antidote to endless streaming subscriptions are free movies online. Here are 12 of the best streaming apps and services for watching movies for free.

Roku doesn't just make some of the best streaming devices ; the company also has a free streaming channel that you can access from any Roku product or the web. Here you'll find an impressive array of ad-supported TV shows and feature films you can stream for free – and while Roku's movie collection is modest, it has one of the strongest lineups of free TV shows you can find anywhere.

There's a mix of classic and contemporary movies (like "Click," "Superbad," and "Minority Report") to choose from. There's no need to create an account (though you can if you want to) and ads, while present, are not overly intrusive. Newly-added titles on the platform include "The Lovely Bones," "Blackfish," and "Burlesque."

YouTube offers hundreds of free movies and TV shows (with ads), making it a convenient one-stop shop for all types of video content. YouTube is also one of the few sites where the content is rated by users and you can read comments about the movies as you watch them.

The best part about YouTube is that all the free movies are arranged in a single category.

Vudu is the streaming video arm of Fandango that offers both free and paid videos. It's easy to find the free content thanks to a Free link at the top of the page. There, you'll find thousands of movies – new and old, popular films, and schlock.

The site also does a great job of sorting the movies into categories like Mythical Creatures, New Releases, and Thrilling Suspense, for easy browsing.

Crackle has been around a long time — it got its start in 2004. And unlike some other streaming channels, Crackle is 100% free, offering all its content at no cost (with ads), so anything you see on the site you can watch without paying.

You can browse movies and TV shows by genre, alphabetically, or search for a specific title.

Popcornflix is another completely free video streaming site, offering about 2,000 movies with ads in a variety of categories. It's available as an app for a variety of devices, and you can also watch in a web browser. There's no account required; just open the website, select a movie and start viewing.

Many of the entries at Popcornflix fall into the category of guilty pleasures (like "2-Headed Shark Attack") and cheap knock-offs of mainstream properties (like "Atlantic Rim" and "Almighty Thor") but there's something charming here about the movies you can binge for free with limited ads.

Pluto TV is a little different than most streaming video services. In addition to being able to watch movies and TV shows on demand, it also streams live programming that you access in a program guide as if you were watching cable or satellite TV.

You can jump into programs in progress after browsing the dozens of categories arranged like channels, or switch to the On Demand tab, and start any of the thousands options that are, arranged into easily browsable categories. No catch here! It's all free, supported by ads.

Freevee is an ad-supported video streaming service owned by Amazon. You can stream Freevee content through a number of devices via the Amazon Freevee app, Prime Video app, or by using your web browser.

On Freevee, you'll find a selection of completely free ad-supported movies and TV shows, including original titles that are available exclusively on the platform.

Tubi is a free streaming service with thousands of movies and TV shows. You can watch it all online or on a number of devices including Roku, Apple TV, Xbox, Playstation, Samsung smart TVs, and Sony smart TVs.

You don't need a subscription, and Tubi boasts that it has fewer ads than cable. Like Pluto TV, Tubi has both on-demand and live programming. There's also a kids' section of the website with family movies and TV shows to watch with your little ones.

Kanopy is a bit different than the average free streaming service – it is targeted at library patrons and higher education. If you have a public library card, you can log into Kanopy with your library ID and password; otherwise, if you're a student or processor you can use your university login at participating schools.

The number of movies you can watch depends on the specific school or library you sign up through; you might have anywhere from five to 50 credits each month. Kanopy is a great resource not just for TV shows and movies, but also documentaries, instructional, and educational videos.

Kanopy's selection includes countless thought-provoking and award winning titles from cinema titans like Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, and Raoul Peck. Many of the titles are written and performed in languages other than English, allowing you to easily explore the world's best cinema.

No subscription is required to watch Plex's more than 50,000 free on-demand titles and 250 live TV channels. You can use the Plex app to access its content on pretty much any device (Apple, Android, Smart TVs), or go to the Plex website on your computer.

Movies and TV shows are sorted by categories, and there are special tabs for the most popular titles and ones that are leaving the platform soon. You can also use the search bar to find a specific movie or TV show, and keep track of things you want to see later with their Watchlist feature.

For those looking for non-English language content, Rakuten Viki is focused specifically on Asian live-action movies and shows. Alongside the ability to sort by genre, Viki allows you to sort by country and region. The app showcases dramas and thrillers from Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Not everything on Rakuten Viki is free, but the free content is clearly marked while browsing, and there's a helpful Watch Free section that collects all of the free titles in one place. The platform is structured with a Netflix-like set of categories (Latest Releases, Based on Novels and Toons, and more) and you can access the content on the web or in apps on most devices, including Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, and more.

You may not be aware that the Internet Archive , in addition to being a treasure trove of books, webpages, and historical documents, also has thousands of free feature films available to watch.

Don't look here for contemporary movies or the latest blockbusters, though. As you'd expect from the Internet Archive, these films are in the public domain – generally older films and those made outside the Hollywood cinema industry.

This also means they're oftentimes of lower quality, so your mileage may vary when it comes to deciding if it's worth your time to browse here. The sheer scope of content on The Internet Archive (combined with the fact that it's largely volunteer-run) means you may have to do some serious digging to find gems.

How to unblock sites at school

Often, most entertainment sites or sites of distracting subjects are blocked by the network administrator at schools. In this article, you will find ways on how you can unblock sites at school using different tools and services.

Accessing cetrain websites at school

There exists various tools utilized for the purpose of preventing access to websites within a school setting. As an illustration, a filter could be directly implemented onto the school’s computers. The fundamental concept behind the functioning of such a filter is as follows: upon making a request to access a specific site that pertains to distracting subjects, which have been included in the list of restrictions, the connection will be disrupted, resulting in the display of a connection error. However, the process of installing a filter on each individual computer is both time-consuming and demanding, involving the procurement of a group of licenses for the school, which can prove to be highly costly. Therefore, in the majority of cases, a single filter is installed within the school’s server environment. Whenever a user attempts to visit a blocked website, they are presented with a distinct window containing information indicating that the site is prohibited and currently unavailable to them.

Blocking websites at school is not reasonable, as it may happen that you have a few free minutes and would like to check your social network accounts, important messages, or open any site, which is in most cases blocked by the network administrator. So instead of searching for free unblocked music sites at school, we invite you to learn some easy tips on how to unblock sites at school. The practice of preventing access to websites at educational institutions is not justifiable, as there may be occasions when one has available time and desires to access personal social media accounts, important communications, or any other website, which is typically restricted by the school’s network supervisor. Thus, rather than seeking out unrestricted music websites while at school, we would like to extend an invitation to discover simple methods to circumvent website blocks while on campus.

Top ways to unblock websites at school

Use proxy to unblock websites on school.

Web Proxy is a kind of application installed on a web server, which acts as a medium between you and the website. It is simple to use. Just find any free proxy website, open it, enter the address of the necessary site into the special URL field and click the Go button. You will access the site by using a “foreign” IP address. Web proxies are often used to:

  • Bypass filter administrator’s restrictions and access certain sites
  • Surf anonymously and hide your IP address
  • Unblock geo-restricted websites
  • Test online services in different locations

Here is a list of free proxy services you can try to unblock movie sites at school, social networks or other sites.

how to unblock school blocked sites

If you are interested in how to unblock sites at school without using a Proxy, then continue reading to learn more ways.

Use web browser extensions to access blocked websites

Some browsers can bypass restrictions without a need to download third-party programs. There are built-in browser tools and some popular free add-ons which can be used as school site unblockers.

  • Compression mode. The simplest, but nevertheless, still effective method. You just turn on the traffic saving mode, for example, in Opera and visit the sites you need.
  • Stealthy. The extension is used to change your IP-address to a foreign one. This is achieved by using special proxy servers, and the extension automatically selects the fastest server from the list for your location.
  • Hola Unblocker. This is a special service, which is aimed to speed up the Internet connection and give users access to any sites, regardless of their country of residence.
  • FriGate. Opens sites blocked by the system administrator of your school, network or provider. With friGate, you can simply and reliably open any site without losing a speed.

The list of extensions for browsers that help solve problems with free access to sites can be continued, but this does not make sense since you can find them on Google marketplace and choose the one you like.

Use VPNs to unblock websites

Let’s say that your browser does not support plug-ins and extensions. In this case, you can use a VPN.

When using a VPN, your system connects to a remote server located in another country through a secure tunnel. The information passing through this tunnel is completely protected. Because the VPN service connects you to an external server, this allows you to avoid site-blocking. In addition, when you connect to a VPN, you also receive a new IP address.

Pros. VPN-programs allow you not only to open blocked sites, but also allow you to search anonymously and hide your online activity. Also, with a VPN you have unlimited traffic and a high connection speed.

Cons. You will have to download and install additional software on your device. You can learn more about VPNs in our previous article or immediately download the VPN Client app for Mac and get a free 7-day trial period.

How to unblock school sites using the VPN Client

  • Download VPN Client from the App Store and launch the app.
  • Register your account using your valid email address.
  • Choose the VPN server and click to connect.
  • The program will change your IP address and allow you to unblock websites.

Additional methods to unblock restricted sites

We have shared the easiest ways on how to unblock school sites. The programs above will allow access to any site within two minutes. However, there are some more complex cases, for example, when it is prohibited to install any software on a computer. Then you can try other tricks: We have provided instructions on the most straightforward methods to bypass restrictions on school websites. The aforementioned software options facilitate unrestricted access to any site in a matter of two minutes. Nevertheless, there are instances where the situation is more intricate, such as when it is forbidden to install any programs onto a computer. In such cases, alternative techniques can be attempted. Try the following tricks:

  • Subscribe to site updates via email. Even when there are the most stringent restrictions, you always have access to your email. So you can subscribe to the newsletter of your favorite website and get new articles by email.
  • RSS. If the site does not provide email marketing, you can always use an RSS feed to your mailbox. RSS is a well-known, proven technology, allowing you to get acquainted with new articles without having to visit the site.
  • Google services. Some of Google services can also be used to overcome artificial barriers in the network. For example, such services as Google Translate, Google Mobilizer, Google Modules may well be used as an improvised proxy.
  • Google cache. Check whether the page has a cached version, which you can open even i fit is blocked at your school. To open a cached page on Chrome, open the browser → search for the website you want to visit → right of the URL → click the downward arrow → click Cached.
  • URL shortener. If your school blocks, for example, YouTube, a service that replaces a website’s URL address with a shorter domain name, might unblock the video.

FAQs about accessing blocked content

Here is the list of some sites that are not blocked at schools:

  • Armorgames.com
  • Unblocked Games Pod
  • CoolMath Games
  • Bored Button
  • RG Mechanics

By default, all folders on a Mac have the same color—the macOS uses tags to organize your folders. However, you may want to make your folders different so you can easily find the required items in a mess of folders. In that case, you can use third-party applications like Softorino, which allows you to colorize folders on your Mac.

Instead of a VPN service, you could use a proxy server to open blocked sites at school. Another option is to use the Tor browser.

Blocking websites at school is necessary to censor what children can see and protect them from unwanted content.

How to Unblock Websites At School: 13 Working Ways (2022)

Motuka Minda

Schools nowadays have set up strict firewalls to ensure that students aren’t able to access certain websites. While most firewalls are placed for a good reason, mainly to protect young individuals from nefarious sites, sometimes, these firewalls can deter you from accessing content you really need. In those cases, unblocking websites in your school turns into a necessity.

I’ve bypassed a few school restrictions myself and have had the pleasure of trying out a plethora of different methods, each meant to let you access unblocked websites. A quick disclaimer, though, your mileage may vary when it comes to using these methods depending on the type of security your school has.

So, without further adieu, let’s get into our list of all the methods you can employ to get unblocked websites for school.

Online Proxy

Online proxy for unblocking sites in school

An online proxy, in essence, is a VPN that you can directly connect to using your browser. The request to fetch a particular website is first sent from your browser to that proxy server, which ultimately lands you at the website. Most schools tend to block online proxy sites by blocking all sites with the words proxy , VPN , or unblock in their name. However, you may be lucky. Here’s a list of some popular online proxy sites:

  • FilterBypass

Extension VPN

Extension based VPN

Modern browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox allow for extensions to be downloaded that supplement your browsing experience. Extensions serve multiple purposes. Most schools, though, do not take into account that VPN extensions can be downloaded right in your browser using either the Google Chrome Web Store or the Mozilla Extensions Page . After you download these extensions, all you need to do is enable them, and you’ll be able to access unblocked websites for school.

Some popular browser-based extension VPNs are:

  • Betternet ( Chrome / Firefox )
  • ExpressVPN ( Chrome / Firefox )

VPN for unblocking websites in school

A VPN is the perfect solution for you if your school doesn’t let you install extensions and has proxies blocked. Most schools, while they do end up blocking websites, they do not revoke your ability to install VPNs. If you can download a VPN directly on the PC which you wish to browse, great!

Otherwise, we recommend downloading the setup file of the VPN from your personal computer, uploading the .exe file to Google Drive or Dropbox , and then downloading it from there and installing it on the device.

Here’s a list of VPNs we recommend for how you can unblock websites at school:

  • ExpressVPN ExpressVPN
  • Hotspot Shield

Tor Browser

Tor Browser unblock websites

Contrary to popular belief, the Tor Browser isn’t just used to search the Deep Web. While yes, it can be used to open .onion links, you can open normal websites on the browser just fine. Most schools tend not to block the Tor Browser since its seldom used as a way to unblock websites in school.

All you need to do is download the browser, go through the installation process, and then enter the URL of the site you wish to browse. The Tor Browser essentially acts as a VPN. So, if your school has somehow blocked VPNs, you probably won’t have much luck with the Tor Browser either.

Google Translate

gadget gang google translate version

Google Translate has a handy feature that lets you translate the entire contents of a website to a language of your choosing. The way Google does this is by caching the website on its own servers, translating it, processing it, and then, displaying the translated content through their own servers.

In essence, when you request for a site to be translated, Google’s servers fetch the site’s content for you. All your computer then just connects to Google’s server and views the site from Google’s backend. So, even if a site is blocked on your school’s firewall, you’ll still be able to view it unblocked. Here’s how you can do so:

using Google Translate

  • Open up Google Translate
  • After doing so, click on Websites
  • Enter the name of the websites you wish to open
  • For the languages, select the same language that the site is made up of
  • Now, click on the blue arrow
  • You’ll now be directed to the website through Google’s servers

The Wayback Machine

gadget gang wayback machine

The internet is ripe with history. Sites go through a plethora of changes over time. To preserve these changes, the Wayback Machine acts as a sort of time capsule for websites all over the internet. Luckily for us, this lets us access the contents of these websites without technically opening them up.

So, if a particular website is blocked on your school’s internet, you can do the following:

  • Head to the Wayback Machine
  • Enter the name of the site you wish to unblock
  • Choose the most recent snapshot and open the site up

Bonus Tip: If the site you wish to access has no snapshots, you can request a new one so that the Wayback Machine crawls through the site and takes a snapshot.

Oh, and in case you were curious, this is what Gadget Gang looked like in 2004:

Use Google’s Cache

movie websites for school laptops

Google uses a cached version of a website and updates it periodically. This cache is used to index your website at any given particular moment. When you view a website from Google’s cache, you aren’t sending a request to the website itself. Instead, you are doing it through Google’s server. Most schools do not block Google’s cached web pages. Therefore, you can easily access a cached version of a site and thereby unblock it in school.

Here’s how:

  • Search for the website you wish to open on Google
  • Click on the three dots (hamburger menu) present right beside the URL
  • Now, click on cached

Download A PDF Version

gadget gang unblocked PDF version

If you just want to access a website’s content and don’t want to interact with it directly, a PDF version of the website might just be all you need. No matter how strict your school’s firewall is, you can always access a PDF version of the website. All you need to do is head to an online convertor that accesses the site for you and converts it to PDF. Here’s how:

gadget gang PDF convertor

  • Head to an online HTML to PDF convertor
  • Enter the URL of the site you wish to unblock
  • Wait for the server to fetch the contents of that particular domain and convert it to PDF
  • Download your PDF file and view it using your browser or any compatible PDF viewer.

Note: You cannot download an entire website and convert it to a singular PDF. So, if you want to access multiple pages, you’ll have to specifically enter their URLs for them to be downloaded and subsequently converted.

iCloud Private Relay

movie websites for school laptops

Quick disclaimer, this method is only for Apple Devices and requires an iCloud+ subscription. If you fit the bill, you’ll be able to use iCloud’s Private Relay. In essence, Private Relay is a VPN that masks your location while still keeping your IP geographically close to your actual location. This ensures that the content you are being served is still relevant to your region.

Since all data is encrypted and goes through Apple’s servers, you’ll be able to unblock every site that you previously weren’t able to access. Here’s how you can enable and use iCloud Private Relay on Mac:

  • Click on the Apple Menu and select System Settings
  • Now, click on your Apple ID banner
  • Select iCloud
  • Scroll down to Private Relay and turn it on

Note: Private Relay currently only works with Safari. So, to be able to access unblocked sites in your school, you’ll need to stick to that browser only.

Using Teamviewer / Parsec

using Parsec to unblock websites

Teamviewer and Parsec are both examples of applications that allow you to remotely connect to your desktop at any given moment if you have the software installed on both devices. This, in essence, allows you to access your PC from anywhere around the world. There’s no school that blocks you from being able to use an RDP connection.

So, you can set up your home laptop / PC as an RDP server with any of the two applications we’ve mentioned and then connect to it remotely using your school’s computer. You can then open up any application (even play games) remotely through your device. What’s more, is that there’s no way for your school to track what you’ve been browsing since all requests are made on your home PC.

For this example, we’ll be using Parsec. This is because it’s more reliable than Teamviewer from our testing and also has a browser-based application which is helpful at times when you can’t install applications on your school PC.

  • Download Parsec on your server PC
  • Create an account and log in
  • After doing so, keep the application on your PC
  • Now, download the application or log in through the browser-based application on your school’s PC
  • You will now be able to connect to your home computer and use it remotely.

Getting A VPS

a server rack

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is what is used to make up VPNs. If your school blocks VPN connections, you can rent a VPS off multiple locations, use those as virtual computers, and remotely connect to them. In essence, this method is quite similar to using Parsec / Teamviewer. The primary difference is those computers are physically located with you while VPSs are rented off services like AWS.

When you do purchase a VPS, you have two options, they are:

  • Remotely RDP’ing into the VPS: If you have an installation of Ubuntu , Windows, or any operating system for that matter, you can remotely connect to the VPS by using programs like PuTTY .
  • Create Your Own VPN: You can use your VPS as a proxy server and create a private VPN using tools like OpenVPN . With it, you won’t need to remotely access your VPS and can use it as a simple VPN instead. Since this will be a private IP, there’s no chance for your school’s internet to have already blocked it.

There are tons of different ways you can go about getting a VPS set up to unblock websites for school. If you want a detailed guide about the subject, let us know! In the meanwhile, here are a few great VPS providers to get you started:

  • Microsoft Azure
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)

I’d recommend opting to RDP into your own VPS if you are a beginner. Getting OpenVPN set up can be quite a pain, especially if you don’t know what you are doing.

Change Your DNS

changing DNS step 1

DNS (Domain Name System) is a standard used to identify and bifurcate between computers, websites, and servers throughout the internet. When you connect to a website, say, GadgetGang, your server issues a request to a DNS server which then resolves the particular domain name to an IP address, which is the site’s actual address.

Once that address is received, your browser then requests the server present at the IP for a copy of the website, which is then loaded to you. For example, here’s what happens when you access GadgetGang:

IP address GadgetGang unblock websites school

If you notice, while I’ve tried to ping GadgetGang , I’ve been resolved to a set of numbers which is the IP address of where the actual server is located. Most schools have their own DNS servers in place with the help of firewalls to block particular website names from being resolved.

Thankfully, Google and Cloudfare both have excellent DNS servers that you can use to circumvent your school’s DNS firewall. Here’s how:

  • Open Settings on your PC
  • After doing so, select Network and Internet
  • Now, head to Advanced network settings and select More network adapter options
  • In the newly opened window, right-click on your current connection and select Properties
  • Now, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  • 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS)
  • 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare DNS)

Use The IP Address Instead Of The Domain Name

As we’ve mentioned earlier, the IP Address is used to actually request a copy of a webpage from a server. Oftentimes, the URL of the website is blocked, and the IP isn’t. Contrary to popular opinion, you can enter an IP address directly on your browser in order to access a website without entering the actual domain name.

All you need is to actually get the IP address of the website’s server. Here’s how:

IP address unblock websites unblock websites school

  • Open Command Prompt
  • Now, type the following command, ping www.websitename.com
  • You’ll now be able to see a string of numbers that’s your IP address
  • Copy the IP address to your browser’s URL bar, and you’ll be redirected to your website

Is It Wrong To Bypass School’s Firewall?

Yes, it is both ethically and legally wrong (in some cases) to bypass your school’s firewall. This is because you are either using your school’s property or their network. And, when you are doing so, you are bound to their rules. However, in some cases, firewalls can end up blocking websites for no reason, which can very well be important for your research or homework.

In those cases, we recommend consulting with your school and informing them of the error. If the error is acknowledged, you can then bypass and unblock your school’s websites by using any of the methods we’ve mentioned above. As always, Gadget Gang strictly advises against bypassing sites without your school’s explicit permission.

Those are all the different ways on how you can unblock websites at school. What method ended up working out for you? Which one was the easiest one to do? Is there another method we haven’t mentioned? Let us know in the comments section down below!
