Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate reality of our lives. The daily news reports generally contain at least one incident of a road accident. Depending on the severity of the accident, the number of casualties and the damage done can be concerning. Road accidents cost a lot of lives and property damage. To avoid accidents, everyone should be more careful and vigilant on the streets. As a driver, one must be extra cautious because one mistake from the driver can cost the lives of innocent others.

The Road Accident That I Experienced

I remember the first road accident I witnessed. It had changed my perspective on life. I still remember the date and the day very intricately. It was the 20th of September 2016. I was returning home from tuition. My mother had come to pick me up. It was around 6 o'clock in the evening. When we reached the bus stand, we saw a huge crowd of people at a few feet of distance from the bus stop. There were men in the crowd who were screaming in the regional language.

At first, we couldn't understand what was going on. After a while of careful overhearing of the conversation of everyone near us, we could understand that there was an accident. So to get to the bottom of it we asked a shopkeeper what had  happened. He told us that indeed an accident took place a while ago. He then went on to give us a detailed event of what happened. According to him, a pedestrian was crossing the road. A passenger's bus had hit him. The man was left bleeding on the street. The people in the area then cornered the bus and assaulted the bus driver. The police were called to the scene. As for the pedestrian, when the police came over, they declared the man dead. However, as a formality, they sent him to the hospital but according to the shopkeeper, there is not much hope for a miracle.

This incident made me realize how fragile life is. It could very well have been me or my loved one instead of that man.  The man was not at fault as he was following the rules, but because of the ignorance of another careless man, he had to lose his life. This incident has left a scar on my mind which still bothers me at times.

Road accidents are a fairly tragic event that has dangerously increased in numbers nowadays. Today, there are more automobiles on the streets than ever. Some say that this increase in the number of automobiles is the reason the number of road accidents is increasing too. Some others say that people nowadays have become more careless, this leads to a higher number of accidents due to carelessness. Another problem that is very prevalent in India is the lack of civic sense in people. People in the cities of India do not strictly adhere to the traffic rules; some people also lack the basic road sense. On top of that, certain parts of the city have narrow roads. All these add up to increase road accidents.

Description of Road Accident:

Road accidents are scary for our lives. In recent times it has increased more. Every morning when you open a newspaper every second or third page will have news related to road accidents. The reason for increasing road accidents is due to the fact that people are buying more automobiles and have also become careless while driving vehicles.

Many a time we have seen that people are just avoiding following traffic rules. Especially in metropolitan cities, people are more careless while driving vehicles which ultimately lead to road accidents.

The foremost causes of road accidents in such metropolitan areas can be narrow roads and roads with potholes.

Thus a road accident damages the lives of life and material. People should be very careful while driving or walking on the road.

It is also seen that walking on the road is also equally dangerous because of heavy traffic it can also be harmful to the people walking on the road. Hence, such people should walk on the side of the road or walk on footpaths.

Road Accident Incident:

Once I was coming back from my office at that time when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my co-worker and it was around 6 o’clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two groups of people but then after reaching the spot, we found that an accident had taken place.

After talking with the people present there, we came to know that a man who was crossing the road met with an accident while crossing the road. A truck passing by hit him leaving him with serious injuries. The man was lying on the ground bleeding and people were calling for an ambulance, plus they also informed the police about the incident.

Subsequently, the police arrived and caught the driver of the truck as people had already taken a hold of the driver. During the investigation with the driver, the cops came to know that the driver was drunk and was driving the vehicle. Later on, cops detained him and took the injured person to the nearest hospital, and took a statement from the injured person. The driver was released later based on the statement given by the person. That incident made me realize how precious our lives are and we must be very careful when we are walking on the road, on foot, or driving a car.

  Prevention from Road Accidents:

There are some most important points that every person should keep in mind while driving or walking or crossing the road. These points are as follows:

Drive within the prescribed speed limit.

Don’t drink or smoke while driving.

Follow all the traffic rules as they are for our safety.

Never use mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Always drive in the proper lane.

While riding a bike always wear a helmet.

Long Essay on Road Accident 500 Words in English

Below we have given a long essay on road accidents of 500 words. This long essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 7 to class 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants. Long Road Accident Essay in English for classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Competitive Exam Aspirants

Every day in the newspaper, we read about road accidents where people get severely injured and even die. You may have also been in an accident yourself or witnessed one happening. Many of us may even have seen crowding on the street around two vehicles that look bashed up. Road accidents are not uncommon in big cities where there are thousands of cars, motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, trucks, buses, and other vehicles. Road accidents are most often the result of people breaking traffic rules.

There is a reason that traffic rules are created in the first place. However, people break them all the time, especially when they know that the police don’t always catch them for doing it. While the people who break the rules and get away with it are lucky not to get caught, they are endangering their lives whenever they indulge in such misbehavior. The penalty for breaking traffic rules is generally a fine, but worse consequences of this are injuries like paralysis, broken bones, concussions, etc. The worst possible outcome of breaking traffic rules and getting into a road accident is death.

The traffic rule that people break the most is jumping red lights, which means they keep driving even when the signal is red. Another bad habit that causes road accidents is drunk driving. What they don’t realize is that when the light is red for them, it is green for someone else and that they are putting their lives in danger because of this. A lot of times, people take turns on the road without putting on their indicator to do so, and this can lead to road accidents too. Thus, breaking traffic rules is very harmful, and people should refrain from doing so not only out of fear of the police but also because it risks their lives.

When I was 11 years old, I was going out somewhere with my father, and while we were waiting at a signal for the light to turn green, the traffic began to increase a lot. Suddenly, we realized why it was increasing – many people had come out of their cars to see what was happening. There was a crowd on the road around a man who was lying on the floor next to a fallen scooter, and everyone was trying to help him get up. The people took him straight to the hospital, where he had to get a few stitches and go home.

Road accidents are very scary, so we must ensure the utmost safety while driving. One must always wear their seat belt, only drive when the signal is green, stick to the speed limit, stay in your own lane, wear helmets when riding bikes, etc. The best way to prevent getting in a road accident is to ensure that you are following all the rules required to keep you safe. After all, we only have one life, and it is important to take care of it so we can enjoy it to the fullest.

Many times when people are driving on the road in their car or on their scooter or motorcycle, some bad things can happen, and they can get into road accidents. Long and Short Essay on Road Accident in English

We all know the traffic rules. We also know the consequences of not following the traffic rules. Still, the irony is no one follows it and by the time a person realizes his/her mistake, it’s too late. Now-a-days it has almost become a fashion to flout traffic rules. In the following Road Accident essay, I have tried to figure out as to why road accidents have become common in India and as to how we can reverse this trend. I hope you will like my approach and the essay on Road Accident.

Short Essay on Road Accident – Essay 1 (200 words)

Maximum people including me, believe in luck or fate but the problem is that, when something goes wrong, we blame it on fate, rather than accepting our fault. For example, if a meteor falls on one’s house and destroys it. It can be said that it’s bad luck because there was no way by which the person could have guessed its coming or could have done anything to protect his/her house but if you are going on your bike and due to some reason, your bike slips and you get a serious head injury. Is it luck? I am afraid it’s not, It’s gross negligence. If you would have worn your helmet, the head injury would have been avoided.

According to a credible research, most of the road accidents could be avoided or their effect could be minimised if proper precautions are taken. The issue is that maximum people are aware of the safety precautions and also traffic rules and regulations but they consider it (especially youngsters) cool to not to follow them. How this trend started and gained momentum can be a matter of debate but the fact is this problem has taken monstrous proportions and if something is not done urgently, then very soon things will go out of control.

I think no amount of rules and regulations can solve this problem. For this the mentality of the public (especially youngsters) needs to be changed. I think, this could be done by creating awareness among public through various awareness programs. Let’s hope that in the coming time better sense will prevail among the public and the number of deaths caused by the road accidents will come down.

Essay on Road Accidents in India – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

When we were young, we were taught “precaution is better than cure”, and so many other things like “one should help a person in need”, etc but as we grow old we almost forget these things and seldom follow them and by the time we realize that what was taught to us is really true and worthwhile, it gets too late.

Road Accidents in India

According to a data, around one and a half lakh persons die due to road accidents per year in India alone and according to a research most of the deaths are avoidable. Then the million-dollar question is, “why we are not avoiding it”? From where this idea, that wearing helmets and fastening of seatbelts is boring has crept into our minds, I am unable to answer.

I tried to find the answer to the question. According to my dad, films, television and media are one of the main reasons. Film stars and television personalities are shown indulging in irresponsible behaviour in movies and serials. For example, riding very fast on a bike without a helmet and with a girl on the back who is cheering and shouting with joy. Kids and young adults who idolize film stars and television personalities find it cool and try to imitate it in real life without realizing that what was shown in the movie was complete fake or special effect.

Movies like “Dhoom” and “Fast and Furious” etc have glamorized speed. Even bike companies in their advertisements emphasize on the speed of their machines. That is why fast bikes are a craze among youth. Every boy wants to own one these and every girl wants to have a boyfriend who has one of these.

Young boys and girls are routinely found racing on empty roads (sometimes busy also) and highways by the police. Normally they are left with a strong warning but the problem is that, it is not mending them.

Government and few non-government organizations have taken the initiative to educate the youths. Even film and television stars have come out and appealed to youngsters. Progress is slow but let’s hope that in coming time people (specially youngsters) will behave more responsibly and we will be able to control road accidents in India.

Essay on Road Accidents, Causes and Remedies – Essay 3 (400 words)

We Indians are a great lot and are really great at discipline. Where it is written “no parking”, there one can easily find many vehicles parked. This is a very common scene in cities. The next one is more hilarious. In government offices one can find writen on the wall, “do not spit” or in Hindi, “Yahan pe thukna mana hai”. At that very place you will find lots of spits”. The silver lining is that, at least it’s not life threatening but not following traffic rules and guidelines could result in loss of life.

Causes and Remedies of Road Accidents

  • Lack of discipline

I think, this is the biggest reason of road accidents. We are aware of the rules but just don’t follow them. The most common rule which we don’t follow is, wearing of helmets and fastening of seat belts. This simple precaution can save us from serious injuries in case of accidents and it is easy to follow.

On should not cross a railway crossing when it is closed but who cares. It is common to find bikers and cyclists pushing their vehicles from under the closed bars. When asked for reason, the common reply is, “sir ji late ho raha tha”. I am unable to understand why one would risk his life, just to save 5 or 10 minutes. If you want to reach your office/home in time, then it is a good idea to move a bit early but crossing a closed railway crossing is not advisable as it could result in serious injuries or even loss of life.

Mobile phones have revolutionised our world but at many times they prove a big nuisance. It is common to find people chatting on their mobile phones while they are driving. This increases the risk of accident many times. It is not advisable to talk on the phone even if using hands free because one still gets distracted.

Listening to music or radio is also not advisable while driving because it can also cause distraction. If we follow all these rules (be in discipline), there is a good chance that we may never meet an accident.

  • Natural and other Causes

There are many factors which are under our control but also there are some factors which are not under our control. For example, bad roads, bad weather, stray animals etc. I agree, these factors are not under our control but if we take precautions, we can minimize the effect of accidents in case they happen.

People need to be convinced that following rules and being in discipline is also cool and it is in their interest to follow traffic rules.

Essay on How to Prevent Road Accidents – Essay 4 (500 words)

We all are used to ignore statutory warnings. Be it cancer warnings on chewing tobacco and cigarettes or traffic warnings, like, “drive slow”, “do not overtake” etc. Normally our attitude towards them is that, they are meant to be ignored.

Actually, preventing road accidents is very easy, there is no rocket science in it. We just have to stick to basics but the problem is, who cares.

How to Prevent Road Accidents

  • Do not Over Speed

We all love speed. This is why fast bikes and fast cars are in great demand. Even manufactures highlight the speed of their machines in their advertisements. When traffic police catch us speeding, then our standard excuse is, “sir, I was getting late for office”. I am sure most of us will agree to the fact that it’s a lame excuse. The solution to this is simple, “leave your house early”.

Sometimes we do it for fun (specially youngsters indulge in racing or stunts). I think they get inspired from movies and serials without realizing that what is shown to us is special effect and fake.

  • Do not Drink and Drive

This reason is responsible for a majority of major road accidents. First of all, it is not a good idea to drink but let’s say, you end up eventually having few glasses in a friend’s party then under no circumstances should you be driving. You can ask someone who is not drunk, to drive or you can take a taxi etc.

It has been proven scientifically that alcohol reduces the ability of the mind to think and react properly. Therefore, doesn’t matter how confident you are feeling, you should never drive after drinking. Certain medications also cause the same effect on mind as alcohol. So, if your doctor has advised you not to drive after taking some medications, then you should avoid doing it. As by doing it you are putting your life and also others life in danger.

  • Learn Driving Before Driving

Most of us have never learnt driving formally (I mean in a driving school or by a driving instructor). Someone (normally relatives) just guide us a bit and then we think we are good to go. Persons (specially teenagers) who don’t know proper driving are at more risk than those persons who know proper driving.

This is why there is a driving test before one can get a driving licence but every one knows the reality. For few thousand rupees one can get a driving licence (without giving a driving test).

There are many who don’t have a driving licence at all and they continue to drive freely. If one is caught then he/she just gives a few hundred rupees to the concerned official and you are good to go.

  • Proper Maintenance of Roads

Many accidents also happen due to poor maintenance of roads. For example, potholes, broken roads, open manholes etc increase the chance of accidents. Therefore, they should be taken care of, to decrease the chances of accident.

If one is careful and follows all rules and regulations carefully then many road accidents could be avoided and our roads will become safer.

Long Essay on Road Accident – Essay 5 (600 words)

Accident by definition means, “an unexpected and unintentional incident, causing damage or injury” but in most of the cases accidents can be avoided, if certain precautions are taken. So, if we take precautions, it’s good for us and if we don’t take precautions then we ourselves are responsible for the consequences.

According to a data around 1.5 lakh people die per year due to road accidents in India alone. Of course, this number could be reduced easily but for that we have to change our attitude and start following traffic rules and regulations.

What Precautions should be taken to Avoid Road Accidents?

  • Never Drive when Feeling Tired or Sleepy

Normally when we are returning from day’s work, we are tired. There is good chance we may feel a bit sleepy. In that case one should never drive because the chance of (serious) accident increases. It’s a good idea to relax a bit and then drive or better take a taxi.

  • Never Drive under the Influence of Alcohol or other Drugs which Hamper the Ability of the Brain

This one is a strict no-no. Under no circumstances one should drive after consuming alcohol. If some one does it, he/she is risking his/her life and also the life of others.

  • Wear Helmets and Seatbelts while Driving

This rule is the easiest one to follow and has great benefits. This minimizes the effect in case of an accident.

  • Never use your Mobile Phone while Driving

This rule is one of the most leniently followed. It is very common to find people talking on their mobile phone while driving. Talking on the mobile phone causes diversion of mind and in a flip second one can lose control and that can cause accident.

  • Jumping Red Light can be Fatal

Traffic lights are made for a purpose. If you jump a red light (no matter why), you run the chance of getting hit by a vehicle coming from other direction. Therefore, it’s a good idea to stop at red light and move only when it’s green.

  • Never Overspeed

No matter, how tempted you feel to speed up your car or bike after hearing the title tune of “Dhoom”. One should never do it because we all know that what is shown in movies is not real.

Sometimes people speed up to reach the office/house on time. For this, the easy solution is to start your journey a bit early.

  • Make Sure your Headlights and Tail Lights are in Working Condition

Suppose you are driving in night and you want to turn your vehicle to the left, so you turn on your left indicator but your tail light is not working, so the driver behind you was not able to know that you want to turn and he hits your car.

This is a possible scenario. So, it’s a good idea to keep your car in good condition and get it repaired as soon as you find any faults.

  • Drive Slowly and more Carefully in Bad Weather

The chances of accident increases by many folds in bad weather (rain, storm, snow etc). Therefore, one should avoid driving in bad weather but if that is not possible then one should drive very carefully and slowly otherwise he/she can get hurt.

  • Busting of Tires

Suppose you are driving on a lonely road and your car runs over an iron nail and your tire bursts. There is a chance that your car may flip or your car may get hit by another car. An iron nail was there on the road. You can’t do anything about that but if you had taken precautions like driving under speed limit and wearing of seatbelts, you can definitely minimize the effect of the accident.

There are so many things which are under our control and also there are some things which are not under our control. So, let’s do what we can do and leave the rest to God. With some effort I am sure we can bring down the number of road accidents.

A Road Accident Essay with Quotes for Matric, F.A, FSC, 2nd Year, B.A, BSC for Examinations

The word ‘ACCIDENT’ can be defined as damaging happening from human recklessness. It can also be defined as a sudden detrimental happening mostly triggered by human carelessness.  This often happens due to human violation of immutable laws.  Life is not a bed of roses.  It is indeed uncertain, fleeting and unpredictable.  Man is subject to unforeseen incidents.  Human is exceedingly conscious to adopt adequate measures for his security and safety.  But in spite of his efforts and struggle, he cannot escape from the clutches of ‘Nature, red in tooth and claw’.  In short human cannot escape from the fate.  We daily observe accidents of various kinds occurring at different places all around the world.  Thousands of the people lose their precious lives in these accidents and many others are crippled for the rest of their lives.  They moan, sob, weep and wail but unseen hand of fate does not take pity on them.

Perhaps their surging stream of human blood is not enough to satiate the unquenchable thirst of furious fate.  Shakespeare said:

“As flies wanton boys are we to the gods,    They kill us for their sport”

Accidents are always terrible, pathetic, distressing and heart-rending. The accident that I am going to narrate is tragically terrible and dreadful.  Once I made a program with my friends to spend a few days in the comforting company of nature in Swat valley.  The preparations were finalized within two days.  On the third day, we started off our journey at dawn.  All of us were excited and thrilled about our adventure. The journey to Peshawar was tremendously tiresome as we had to travel in the scorching heat of summer.  After having a brief rest at Peshawar, we decided to proceed immediately to our destination.  We hired a jeep and after a couple of hours were creeping at the scary road of Malakand pass.

The scenery around was amazingly captivating and mesmerizing.  Lush green trees and flowery bushes were growing in abundance on the slopes of hills.  Thin fleece-like clouds floating in the sky were playing hide and seek with sun.  Cool gentle breeze was growing from the green hills. It fanned our faces and lifted our spirits.  The road winding around the cliffs looked somewhat scary.  But the sensation of excitement made the journey pleasant and delightful.

“Road sense is the offspring of courtesy and the parent of safety.” (Australian Traffic)

We were entirely absorbed in that magical scenery when the deafening noise of horns of two buses brought us back to our world.  The two buses overtook us at the breakneck speed.  The reckless drivers did not know that they were engaged in death-race.  All of the sudden a truck appeared from the curve of a cliff collided with one of the buses.  There was a loud bang and the vehicles jammed into each other.  The second fast flying bus also crashed against them and the three vehicles rolled down the slope at a terrific speed into the deep gorge below.  It was a horribly harrowing scene.  The heartbreaking shrieks of ill-starred passengers echoed back from the hills.

We got down the jeep and rushed to the spot to help the passengers but the downward slope was so steep that no one could get down to the vehicles below.  After a desperate struggle we managed to approach the place where these vehicles were lying utterly smashed.  No one had survived.  All the passengers had died then and there.  Their blood stained bodies were lying around.  No one was found sobbing and crying.  It was a terrible sight.  Human flesh and blood was visible at the arid stones all around.  Everyone was horror-struck.  The shock crippled all of us.  Neither could we speak nor move nor cry.  Soon the police and district administration arrived to take away the corpses.  We could stand it no longer.  We cancelled our program and returned with heavy hearts.

“When you. gamble with safety, you bet your life.” (Charles Dickens)

The effect of that accident was so shocking that whenever I recollect this regrettable accident I become deeply depressed.  May the departed souls be blessed with eternal joys of heaven! Ameen.

  • The wisdom in calling Donald Trump weird

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are trying to make Democrats normal again

Ex US president Donald Trump tries on a pair of glasses saying "Not Weird" as Kamala Harris and her Vice President pick, Tim Walz watch on

Your browser does not support the <audio> element.

T he bickering among Democrats and Republicans over which party’s nominee is weirder is among the more hopeful developments of this presidential campaign. It implicitly brings to the forefront of politics the question: what is normal? President Joe Biden’s bid to be re-elected at the age of 81 was obviously not that. Voters knew it all along, even as Democratic leaders, while secretly sharing the opinion, laboured to insist otherwise. The exultation within the party over what should be quite normal—having a candidate who campaigns vigorously, speaks clearly and laughs easily—is an index of how strange Mr Biden’s wan, creaky candidacy had become.

Mr Biden’s abdication cleared the way for Vice-President Kamala Harris to focus attention on the abnormality of the Republican nominee, Donald Trump . Rather than stick with Mr Biden’s sombre approach, warning of a menace to America’s soul, she and her allies began needling Mr Trump. Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota and now Ms Harris’s running-mate, started calling him “weird”, and as she and other Democrats joined in, the former president foolishly took the bait.

Mr Trump might instead have chosen to wear the adjective as a badge of honour. He has pulled off that trick with more daunting challenges, such as having his mugshot taken or being convicted of felonies. By comparison, interpreting the word “weird” to suit his politics seems simple. Being “weird”, in the sense of not following the herd, is a good thing, and Mr Trump’s message from the beginning has been that he is not a conventional politician. Of course he would seem weird to the swamp creatures. The T -shirts practically write themselves.

But it is conceivable that being called “weird”, with its whiff of high-school stigma, of relegation to a low-status social group, pokes some particular sore spot deep inside the Republican nominee. In any event Mr Trump’s I’m-rubber-you’re-glue reflex is to bounce any insult back to its source, from Hillary Clinton’s claim he was a Russian puppet (“No puppet—you’re the puppet”) to Mr Biden’s warning that Mr Trump was a threat to democracy (“I’m the opposite. They’re the threat to democracy.”) Hence: “They’re the weird ones. Nobody’s ever called me weird.”

This time he has a point: Democrats have traditionally been the weird ones, particularly Democrats from California. The last serious Democrat to run for president from California was Jerry Brown, known, because of his mix of idealism and eccentricity, as “Governor Moonbeam”. Ms Harris’s move to seize the high, if flat, ground of normalcy—think football pitch in midwestern suburb—is a clever act of pre-emption. It has been accompanied by reversals that suggest she thinks Democratic politics, including her own, recently got pretty weird in a bad way.

Ms Harris has clarified that she no longer wants to ban fracking or create a federal jobs guarantee. She also opposes a single-payer health-care system and forcing gun owners to sell their assault weapons to the government. She has begun boasting about her years fighting crime and trying to strengthen the border. She is disappointing leftists by calling for the restoration of the protections of Roe v Wade , which established a right to abortion until the fetus was viable, rather than a more expansive guarantee.

She is also presenting herself as an optimistic fighter for the future and warning that “Donald Trump wants to take our country backward.” That wish may not seem as weird as hoping to disguise the death of a bear cub as a bicycle accident in Central Park, as Robert F. Kennedy junior, an independent candidate, says he did. But it is an axiom of American politics that elections are about the future, and Mr Trump often seems obsessed with the past.

How serious Ms Harris is about repositioning the party, and whether voters will buy it, are open questions. Her choice of Mr Walz shows she is trying to walk a line between antagonising the left and appealing to moderates. A veteran, former geography teacher and hunter with a zest for dad jokes, Mr Walz radiates normal-guy vibes. But he is to the left of other candidates Ms Harris considered. For now, polls show many independent voters do not know much about Ms Harris, which gives her a chance to establish herself as normal. Mr Trump sees the challenge. As he put it at a rally on August 3rd, “We have to work hard to define her.” He has chosen to do that not just by emphasising her former positions but by mocking her identity and intelligence.

Going for gold

Mr Trump is falling back on the politics that helped him in 2016 to carve a path to victory in the electoral college through states such as Pennsylvania, turning out alienated white men who do not usually vote. The approach reflects his long-held view of the motivating power of racism. Back in the 1990s (as Maggie Haberman reported in her biography of Mr Trump, “Confidence Man”), a consultant showed Mr Trump a projection that non-whites would eventually constitute the American majority. Mr Trump replied that would never happen, because a revolution would prevent it. “This isn’t going to become South Africa,” he said.

Are such views normal? Even some on the left nowadays treat racism as a barrier Americans cannot surmount. Yet while Ms Harris’s candidacy was coming into focus, Americans were cheering their Olympic team as it presented a daily display of diversity, teamwork, excellence and patriotism. Attitudes change. In 1958 just 4% of Americans approved of marriage between people of different races, according to the Gallup polling group; by 2021 that proportion was 94%, a change the organisation hailed as “one of the largest transformations in public opinion in Gallup’s history”. The arc of history may not inevitably bend towards justice, but in America it is weird to argue otherwise. ■

Trump’s tale of a harrowing helicopter ride and emergency landing? Didn’t happen, Willie Brown says

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump mixed up two prominent politicians from California when he told a harrowing tale of almost crashing in a helicopter.

During a meandering press conference Thursday riddled with false and misleading statements , Trump recalled riding as a passenger in the chopper with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown when it was forced to make an emergency landing. The comments were in response to a question about a relationship between Brown and Vice President Kamala Harris three decades ago.

But Brown has never shared a helicopter with Trump, the former mayor said. Instead, it was former California Gov. Jerry Brown who rode with Trump in a helicopter in 2018 to survey wildfire damage , and no emergency landing was reported.

On Friday night, Politico reported that Nate Holden, a former Los Angeles city councilman and state senator, said he had once ridden with Trump in a helicopter heading to New Jersey that almost crashed.

“Willie is the short Black guy living in San Francisco,” Holden told Politico. “I’m a tall Black guy living in Los Angeles.”

It was the latest apparent instance of Trump misstating names or telling anecdotes that fail to hold up to scrutiny — in this case, to disparage Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.

Image

“I know Willie Brown very well,” Trump said about the alleged incident. “In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this was the end.”

He went on: “We were in a helicopter, going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. This was not a pleasant landing.”

Trump said Brown also told him “terrible things” about Harris. “He was not a fan of hers very much, at that point.”

But Brown told the San Francisco Chronicle that he’s never been in a helicopter with Trump.

“You would have known if I had gone down on a helicopter with Trump,” Brown told the paper.

The longtime Democratic politician said he has never disparaged Harris to Trump, either.

“Hell, no,” Brown said. “I wouldn’t say anything bad about any woman to him.”

Former California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and Trump did ride in a helicopter to survey wildfire damage in 2018. But no problems with the flight were reported.

Current Gov. Gavin Newsom was also on the aircraft. A spokesperson for the Democrat, Izzy Gardon, said Friday there was no problem with the flight, no emergency landing, and no conversation about Harris.

Willie Brown’s long-ago relationship with Harris has resurfaced since she became the Democratic nominee for the White House. Now that Trump faces her in his bid for a second term, he and other Republicans have used the relationship to lob attacks suggesting Harris didn’t earn her political positions legitimately.

Brown was serving as speaker of the California State Assembly in the 1990s when he and Harris were in a relationship. Brown had separated from his wife in 1982.

Harris, 59, spent years as a prosecutor in the Bay Area before her elevation as the state’s attorney general in 2010 and then election as U.S. senator in 2016. She has been married to Doug Emhoff since 2014.

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt declined to explain the discrepancies in Trump’s story when asked about it Friday on Newsmax.

“I would just refer you to President Trump’s statement and what he said yesterday,” Leavitt said. “The president has a lot of amazing stories from his life.”

How to Write an Introduction Paragraph: Examples and Guide

There are times when an introduction predicts what your entire essay will say—it’s essentially a reflection. If done successfully, it grabs the reader’s attention and entices them to read further into the essay. As a writer, I know the importance of a strong and engaging introduction, and with practice, I have excelled in the art of writing a good intro. Here’s how you can write a compelling introduction with examples.

The Purpose of the Introduction Paragraph

A good introduction serves as a roadmap for your essay, setting the stage for what is to come. Its primary purpose is to grab the reader’s attention, provide necessary background information, and clearly state the main argument or thesis of the essay. By doing so, it helps the reader transition from their own world into the context of your analysis, making them interested in reading further. A well-written introduction also outlines the structure of the essay, ensuring that the reader knows what to expect in the body paragraphs. This initial section is crucial for making a strong first impression, establishing the tone, and demonstrating the quality and direction of your work. A good introduction paragraph should be able to:

Engage the Reader: Capture interest with an intriguing opening sentence or a compelling story.

Provide Context: Offer background information needed to understand the topic.

State the Thesis: Clearly present your main argument or thesis statement.

Outline the Structure: Briefly mention the main points or sections covered in the essay.

Establish Relevance: Explain why the topic is important and worth discussing.

Set the Tone: Establish the style and tone of your writing.

Write an Introduction Paragraph

An introduction paragraph sets the tone for your entire essay, shaping your reader's expectations and mood. It's like the gateway to your ideas - a good one hooks the reader, compelling them to continue, while a weak introduction might make them lose interest before they've even begun. That's why learning how to start an introduction paragraph for an essay is crucial for students and writers alike.

With tools like WPS Office at your fingertips, you're not just getting a word processor, but an AI assistant to guide you through the entire journey of crafting that perfect opening. In fact, I'll be using WPS Office for this tutorial to demonstrate its features. So, let's dive in and explore how to write an essay introduction step by step:

The hook is the opening sentence or a few sentences of an essay designed to grab the reader's attention and entice them to keep reading. It serves to engage the reader by presenting something intriguing, surprising, or relevant to the essay's topic.

The main purpose of the hook is to spark the reader's interest and make them want to read more. It's the first impression the reader gets, so it needs to be compelling and relevant to the essay's subject.

1.Start with a Surprising Fact or Statistic: Begin with an interesting or shocking fact that relates to your topic. This immediately grabs the reader's attention.

Bad Example: "Drunk driving is a serious issue."

Good Example: "Every year, over 1.25 million people die in car accidents, many of which are caused by drunk driving."

2.Use a Quote: Introduce your essay with a relevant quote that encapsulates your main point.

Bad Example: "Drunk driving is defined as driving while impaired by alcohol."

Good Example: “At eighteen, Michelle had a lifetime of promise in front of her. Attending college on a track scholarship, she was earning good grades and making lots of friends. Then one night her life was forever altered…”

3.Pose a Rhetorical Question: Ask a question that provokes thought and engages the reader.

Bad Example: "Have you ever driven a car?"

Good Example: "What if every time you got behind the wheel, you risked not only your life but the lives of others?"

4.Tell an Anecdote or Story: Share a brief, compelling story that relates to your topic.

Bad Example: "I once heard a story about a drunk driver."

Good Example: "At eighteen, Michelle had a lifetime of promise in front of her. Attending college on a track scholarship, she was earning good grades and making lots of friends. Then one night her life was forever altered..."

If you need ideas to help you improve on the hook for your introduction, consider providing WPS AI with a prompt such as:

"Write an introduction on the topic 'Risks of Driving Intoxicated' and provide four individual hooks: one with a surprising fact, one using a quote, one with rhetorical questions, and one through telling an anecdote."

WPS AI will produce a catchy hook statement that you can use for your introduction, such as:

Background Information

Background information provides the reader with the necessary context to understand the essay's topic. This may include historical, geographical, or social context, definitions of key terms, or an outline of the debate surrounding the topic.

The background helps to bridge the gap between the hook and the thesis statement. It gives the reader the context they need to understand the main argument of the essay and why it's important.

1.Provide Context: Explain the broader context of your topic to show its significance.

Bad Example: "Drunk driving is bad."

Good Example: "Michelle's story is not isolated. Each year, over 1.25 million people die in car accidents, many of which are caused by drunk driving."

2.Introduce Key Terms and Concepts: Define any terms or concepts that are crucial to understanding your thesis.

Bad Example: "Drunk driving is when you drink alcohol and drive."

Good Example: "Drunk driving, legally defined as operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher, is a preventable cause of many fatalities."

3.Set Up the Problem: Briefly discuss the scope of the issue or debate you will be addressing.

Bad Example: "People drive drunk sometimes."

Good Example: "Despite strict laws, drunk driving continues to be a significant problem worldwide, leading to devastating consequences for victims and their families."

To give an effective and detailed background information in your introduction consider proving WPS AI with a prompt like this:

“This serves as the background to my introduction: 'People frequently choose to drive under the influence of alcohol.' Please enhance it to address the problem and discuss its scope."

WPS AI will produce a detailed background passage for your introduction, give as:

Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay. It usually appears at the end of the introduction and states the essay's central argument or position.

The thesis statement guides the direction of the essay by informing the reader what the essay will argue or discuss. It sets the tone and focus of the entire paper.

1.Be Clear and Specific: Clearly state your main point and how you will support it.

Bad Example: "This essay will talk about drunk driving."

Good Example: "Drunk driving laws need to include stricter penalties for those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol to reduce accidents and save lives."

2.Make an Argument: Present a claim that requires evidence and can be debated.

Bad Example: "Drunk driving is bad and should be stopped."

Good Example: "Implementing harsher penalties for drunk driving will deter offenders and significantly decrease the number of alcohol-related accidents."

3.Outline Your Main Points: Indicate the main points you will cover in your essay to support your thesis.

Bad Example: "I will discuss the problems with drunk driving."

Good Example: "Stricter penalties are necessary because they act as a deterrent, they can prevent repeat offenses, and they provide justice for victims."

You can take help from WPS AI to extract the thesis statement of your essay using the WPS AI chat box.

Step 1: Click on the WPS AI widget at the top corner of the WPS Writer interface.

Step 2: The WPS AI pane will open on the right side of the screen. Type in your prompt to extract the thesis statement of your essay and then paste the essay.

Here is a prompt example that you can use:

"Extract the thesis statement from the following essay:"

Step 3: WPS AI will provide the thesis statement. To refine it further, engage with the WPS AI chatbot by asking more questions or queries.

The summary or road map briefly outlines how the essay will be structured. It provides a preview of the main points that will be covered, giving the reader a sense of the direction of the argument.

1.Summarize Main Points: Briefly mention the key arguments or points you will discuss in your essay.

Bad Example: "I will talk about drunk driving laws, penalties, and justice."

Good Example: "This essay will first examine the current state of drunk driving laws, then explore the impact of stricter penalties on reducing incidents, and finally discuss how these penalties can bring justice to victims."

2.Be Concise: Keep it short and to the point, providing a clear outline without going into too much detail.

Bad Example: "I will write about drunk driving and why it is bad."

Good Example: "By examining the effectiveness of current laws, the potential benefits of stricter penalties, and the importance of justice for victims, this essay argues that harsher punishments for drunk driving are essential."

“Write a concise summary for the introduction of an essay on the topic "Risks of Driving Intoxicated." The summary should briefly mention the key points that will be covered in the essay, without going into too much detail."

The summary should briefly outline the main points covered in the essay, emphasizing the societal impact, legal ramifications, and personal consequences of driving under the influence. Ensure clarity and coherence, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of the topic in the subsequent sections.

1. What is the structure of an essay?

An essay is divided into three main parts:

Introduction: This section introduces the topic and presents the main idea (thesis). It provides some background information and outlines what the essay will discuss.

Body: The body forms the essay's core, where you develop arguments to support your thesis. It is organized into several paragraphs, each presenting a distinct point backed by evidence.

Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the main points covered in the essay and strengthens the thesis statement. It wraps up the discussion and may offer final insights or suggestions.

2. Why do I need a thesis statement?

A thesis statement plays a crucial role in academic essays and research papers by presenting the central argument or idea to be explored and developed. Here are several key reasons why a thesis statement is essential:

It provides clear direction and focus for your writing.

It summarizes your main argument for the reader.

It maintains clarity and coherence throughout the essay.

It serves as the foundational basis for structuring the entire essay.

3. How long should the introduction paragraph be?

The introduction paragraph for a research paper typically spans one to two paragraphs. As a general rule, the entire introduction section—which includes the opening paragraph, literature review, and research questions—should constitute approximately 10% to 15% of the paper's total length. This structure allows for a comprehensive yet concise setup of your research topic, providing readers with the necessary context before delving into the main body of your work.

Those videos show the horrifying moment when an 89-foot-long plane, carrying 61 people and slowly spinning in circles, plummeted to earth. A moment after the plane disappears from view near a gated community, an enormous black plume of smoke rises from the spot.

One video then shows a house on fire, a swimming pool full of debris and a group of men peering over a scene of carnage in a yard: a shredded fuselage, twisted metal and, several yards in front of the cockpit, a body.

VoePass Flight 2283 crashed Friday toward the end of a scheduled two-hour flight from Cascavel, Brazil, to São Paulo. VoePass, a small Brazilian airline, said all 57 passengers and four crew members died in the accident.

Thick gray smoke rising into the sky in a residential neighborhood.

The airline and Brazilian officials said they did not know why the plane had crashed.

The plane, an ATR 72, had all systems operating correctly when it took off, the airline said. The pilots did not signal any emergency, officials said. The aircraft, a twin-engine turboprop plane, was built in 2010 and was in compliance with Brazilian regulations, they added.
