Christmas is a festival celebrated around the world by Christians and even non-Christians. The festival commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, who would go on to establish Christianity. It is also one of the biggest annual festivals in the world, with billions of people taking part in its celebrations. Time is also spent with family and friends, exchanging gifts and having a blast.

When was Jesus Christ Born?

Today, we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December every year. However, nobody knows the exact date when Jesus was born. No historical evidence exists nor was it explicitly mentioned in the Bible. So, how did people come about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December?

Christmas Date and Its Origin

Many believe that the birth of Christ did not happen on Year 1, but somewhere between 2 BC and 7 BC. The first-ever recorded evidence of Christmas celebrations can be traced all the way to 336 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine was the very first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity, and hence, celebrated the birth of Christ on December 25th. However, there are more theories that explain why we celebrate Christmas on 25th.

An ancient Christian tradition marked March 25th as the day when Mary was told that she would give birth to a very special baby, this event was called the Annunciation in Christian literature. Nine months after March 25th was December 25th, which is when Jesus would have been born.

How “Old Christmas” is Celebrated?

Today, the world follows the Gregorian Calendar, which was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Prior to this, the Roman Calendar was used. However, the Roman calendar had more days in a year than the Gregorian Calendar. Hence, when the world switched to the Gregorian Calendar, almost 10 days were lost. Hence, the day that followed October 4th, 1582 was October 15th, 1582.  Similarly, when the UK adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752, the day that followed September 2nd, 1752, the day which followed was September 14th, 1752.

Some Orthodox Churches still use the Roman Calendar, hence, they would celebrate Christmas on January 6th, which is where December 25th would have been on the Gregorian Calendar. In some parts of the world, January 6th is called Old Christmas, due to the fact that this would have been the day Christmas would have been celebrated if the calendar switch was never made.

The Meaning Behind the Term “Christmas”

The name “Christmas” is actually a shortened form of the word “Christ’s Mass” or the Mass of Jesus Christ. This is in turn derived from the Old English word – “Crites-messe”, which literally translates to Christ’s Mass. The term “Mass” is a service used by Christians to indicate the death and the subsequent resurrection of Jesus. Alternatively, Mass was also called a Eucharist or Communion.

Interestingly, people also use the term “Xmas” in place of Christmas. The Greek name of Christ is “Χριστός (Christos), and it starts with the Greek letter “X” or Chi (pronounced as “ kai ”). Hence, people started abbreviating “Christ” with “X”, thereby calling it “Xmas”.

Christmas is one of the biggest festivals celebrated around the world. It is also popular in countries where the number of Christians are relatively small. However, most countries around the world declared December 25th as a public holiday.

Christians celebrate Christmas by attending the church on Christmas Eve. Houses are also adorned with decorations and the traditional colours of Christmas – Red, green, and gold. Red symbolizes the blood which was shed by Jesus on his crucifixion. The colour green represents the evergreen trees, which do not lose its colour even in the winter. The colour green also symbolizes eternal life. The colour gold symbolizes royalty, as it was one of the three gifts given by the Magi (priests). Another iconic item of decoration is the Christmas tree, which is usually adorned with tinsel, bells and a star atop the tree. The star on the tree top represents the Star of Bethlehem.

Other celebrations include the classic Nativity Play, where a play is held recounting the birth of Christ (also called the Nativity of Jesus). By now, it’s no secret that I love party days! Watching the excitement of the holiday season through a child’s eyes is simply the best, but planning a classroom Christmas party that is magical, educational, healthy, and of course fun, can be a daunting task. Here is a list of my favorite Christmas party ideas for the classroom that will maximize engagement!

CLASSROOM CHRISTMAS PARTY GAMES

Bingo is one of my favorite games to include during our classroom Christmas party! It’s super easy to adjust the game to review any skill… numbers, addition, subtraction, letters, sounds, rhyming, CVC words, and even sight words . Just throw in some festive bingo markers, and you have a surefire way to increase engagement!

Get those little elves up and moving! This Holiday Charades or Winter Charades game would make a great brain break in between activities during your party, or even throughout the week.  Choose one student at a time to act out the card. Then, the class will try to guess the action.  Once they have guessed correctly, the entire class can complete the motion.

Integrate math into your classroom Christmas party with these differentiated math games . The students will spin the spinner. For the easy version, they will cover that many marshmallows/ornaments.

For the more challenging version, they will add or remove that many marshmallows/ornaments.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTS

You might know by now that I have my students create a craft each Friday. Crafts are so important to help build fine motor control, scissor skills, visual-spatial relationships, creativity, as well as the ability to listen to and follow directions.

This snowman glyph is a fun way to get to know your students. Plus, you can tie in math as you analyze the results.

You can also integrate math with this Christmas Counting Tree craft. Count out festive manipulatives, or have your students use stickers as ornaments.

If you’re working on composing and decomposing numbers, have your students use two different colored ornaments to decorate their tree with this Decomposing Tree craft.

DIRECTED DRAWINGS

Directed drawings are a super easy activity to complete at your classroom Christmas party. All the students will need is a paper and pencil. Plus, they help improve fine motor and listening skills.  I just think this reindeer directed drawing is too cute!

ORNAMENT CRAFTS

Another activity I like to complete during my classroom Christmas party is an ornament craft that the students can take home and hang on their tree. This beaded wreath ornament is my go-to every year!  It’s super easy! 

Plus, the students can practice patterning as they strengthen their fine motor muscles. Simply place 25 red and 25 clear tri-beads, as well as a pipe cleaner, inside a baggie for each student.  Once they are finished threading the beads onto the pipe cleaner, twist the pipe cleaner to create a hook. Use a hot glue gun to attach the bow.

CHRISTMAS SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS

Science experiments are an instantly engaging addition to your no contact classroom Christmas party. For this “Magic Snowman” experiment , just draw a snowman face on a sandwich baggie. Pour a ½ cup of vinegar into an empty baggie. Add 1 teaspoon of “magic snow” a.k.a. baking soda. Quickly zip the baggie. The reaction will produce carbon dioxide, which causes the “snowman” to inflate. Please be aware that too much pressure could cause the “snowman” to explode in a loud pop.

“Santa’s Magic Milk” is a perfect experiment to help our little learners understand the primary and secondary colors. For this experiment, you will fill three shallow containers with milk. Place a cookie cutter in the center of each container. 

In one container, place a few drops of red food coloring inside the cookie cutter and few drops of yellow outside the cookie cutter. In the remaining containers, add red and blue, as well as yellow and blue, food coloring. Dip a Q-tip in the dish soap. Dab the food coloring to create a color burst in the milk. Remove the cookie cutter. Use a clean Q-tip to mix the colors together.

SNOWMAN SLIME

Snowman Slime will always be my favorite activity at our classroom Christmas party! This slime recipe is the best!  It’s no-mess and only three ingredients! We mix everything together in a plastic bowl with a plastic spoon for super easy clean up! After we make our slime, we decorate the containers to look like snowman faces.

HOLIDAY PLAY DOUGH KITS

Keep those little hands busy and those minds creative with play dough! Simply fill a baggie with some holiday play dough mats and loose parts, including pipe cleaners, pom poms, pony beads, paper straws, buttons and googly eyes. When the kiddos are finished building each design, they can take their baggies home… a little holiday gift from you!

CLASSROOM CHRISTMAS PARTY MOVIE IDEAS

At the end of our classroom Christmas party, I have my students watch a short movie as they eat their holiday snacks. Here are just a few Christmas classics that you might consider:

• Frosty the Snowman
• Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
• The Polar Express
• Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas
• Spookley and the Christmas Kittens
• Click, Clack, Moo Christmas at the Farm

HOT CHOCOLATE CLASSROOM CHRISTMAS PARTY

On the last day before break, we will have a hot chocolate party. We also watch The Polar Express , as we are drinking our Snowman Soup .

Just before the movie ends, the office brings us a special delivery from the North Pole!  Santa sent us a stocking full of freezing cold jingle bells! Of course, the kiddos need to shake them to hear the jingle!

HOLIDAY DANCE PARTY

A holiday dance party is sure to get your little ones excited! Search for your favorite holiday songs on YouTube, Spotify or Amazon… or go old school with a CD. Once you’ve found your holiday playlist, turn up the music and watch your little reindeer prance! Increase the fun with a Holiday Freeze Dance! Just stop the music, and have your students freeze like a holiday character (Santa driving a sleigh, Rudolph shining his nose).

There are so many great books to read at Christmas… Santa, reindeer, snowmen, the gingerbread man.  Here is a look at a few of my favorites:

HOLIDAY BOOK STUDY

Perhaps, you want to choose just one holiday book to complete an in-depth book study.  The Gingerbread Man is the perfect read aloud for sequencing and character trait analysis, as well as cause and effect. After reading the story, I have my students read an emergent reader version. As they read, we create a retelling bracelet to help us remember the events in the story.

We also incorporate math with this “Five Little Gingerbread Men” subtraction reader.

And… of course, we have to investigate a gingerbread cookie using our five senses!

Report Writing on Christmas Celebration [With PDF]

Christmas celebration has always been a hot topic relevant for report writing tests in various examinations around the country. That’s why we have decided to write a few such reports on this topic in the following session. But at the very beginning, I want to clarify that these kinds of reports can be classified into two categories:

CHRISTMAS DAY CELEBRATION AT OUR SCHOOL

Christmas Celebration at our school was organized on 22nd December this year. Students came to school wearing beautiful dresses. The school was decorated beautifully with glitters and lights. A crib was made by the students of class 12. The crib was really very beautiful.

One could easily notice the excitement of Christmas in the students’ eyes. They were eagerly waiting for the  Christmas gift exchange. All the students had brought Christmas gifts for their friends. This ceremony of choosing a Christmas friend and exchanging gifts is promoted in order to inculcate the mentality of sharing among the students.

This practice would also help them to think about others. After the gift exchange ceremony, all students were assembled in the auditorium for the programs. There were a variety of performances, the best being the Carol songs performed by the senior-most students.

A student dressed as Santa Claus paraded through the auditorium cheering and singing songs of Christmas, handing out small gifts and handshakes. By the end of the program, the principal distributed cakes and cards to all her children. It was a piece of cake with sweets and a Christmas card wishing them “Happy Christmas”.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION AT TRINA SOCIETY

Kerala, Trina Society ; December 24, 2019: This year the Trina Society celebrated Christmas together with everyone in their colony. Everybody from the colony turned up in their party clothes which were mostly red and white. The gathering was held at the adjacent association park. The association park was decorated beautifully with glitter and lights. It looked beautiful on the evening of Christmas.

There was a crib made by some of the teenagers from the colony. The aroma of food and cake filled the entire environment. Everybody was waiting for the programs. A lot of programs were organised for the evening. All the programs were performed by people of different age groups.

Carol songs were sung, dance was performed, skits, a drama was staged and so on. A person dressed up as Santa Claus paraded through the crowd and distributed gifts to children. He talked about the importance and significance of this festival. He told a story about the belief that Jesus Christ, the saviour was born on this very day.

After all the programs ended, everybody had food and desserts while the band played Carol songs.

During Christmas, people decorate their houses with Christmas trees, lights and stars. It is one of the popular festivals celebrated worldwide.

This festival is important to Christians as this is the day Jesus was born. They celebrate this festival with great joy and zest. Christmas is loved by children since they receive gifts from Santa Claus. They love decorating trees. Children are on their best behaviour in the month of December because they want to please Santa.

Carol songs such as Jingle bells, Carol of the bells, etc are sung. Relatives come together to celebrate Christmas. This is a festival of joy. It is about sharing and helping others. Christmas is a time to give and forgive. The message of peace, happiness and forgiveness is brought forth through this festival.

There are small vacations for students to enjoy Christmas. They are supposed to write and send Christmas cards to all their relatives who are far away but will be remembered on Christmas.

A Christmas with Covid

December 22, 2020; Kerala: The situations were getting worse due to covid-19. People were in great distress since they could not attend the Christmas Mass at churches. Even though the situations were not in our favour we still managed to celebrate Christmas. We helped those who were in need. We and gifts through couriers.

We even gave gifts to children in a nearby orphanage. They were so happy that they returned their gratitude by writing us Christmas cards. We felt good. Relatives could not come over and gatherings were not allowed. So each house celebrated with their neighbours.

They exchanged dishes and sweets. They broke bread together. They sang songs together. We decorated our houses together. This Christmas was different from the other ones but it reminded us that even though the times are difficult. We were dressed in our best dresses. We wished each other Happy Christmas.

A pleasant and happy atmosphere prevailed in the atmosphere. Even though the celebration was not like the one we used to have in a crowded house, this was a good chance of things. We got to spend the rest of the day with our family, telling jokes and enjoying the nights to ourselves.

Classroom Christmas Party Ideas with an Elf Theme

It's that time of year when everything gets so busy!  I love the Christmas season, but it's a lot!  It's especially fun and super busy in the classroom.  We always have a winter party on the last day of school.  In the last two districts I have taught in, the last day was a 2 hour day in which we could have our party.  I used to do the whole traditional classroom Christmas party , but for the last few years I started doing station rotations.  It made such a difference!  Everything was organized, not chaotic, and the students had so much fun.  I like to do a theme for the whole day.  I have done a reindeer theme and an elf theme, so this year I finally decided to put them in a resource to post in my TPT store.  I usually do 4-5 stations, but I added more to the pack in case you needed them to stretch out all day.  In this post, I will share some tips and all of the stations to you can do for an elf-themed holiday party.

Wow these are some really great ideas I remeber in school when we use the popsicle sticks to make something now in our era kids dont really like making stuff they prefer to buy things that are already made :/ My niece kindergarden teacher is like that so its a shame. On 25 of December 2018, our School celebrated Christmas. The hall was booked for the celebration of Christmas. All Students participated in the decoration of Hall. The Christmas trees full of lamps and flowers were placed in every corner of the Room. All the students were very excited about the Christmas celebration. We had decorated the stage with Happy Christmas tags. Our School whole staff came there. They were impressed to see the decoration of the Hall. There were some cultural programs with Prayer. Students sang Poems and perform skits. Everyone in the Hall enjoyed every Second of the Celebration. The arrangement of food was Good enough there. All enjoyed tasty Christmas food items. Santa Claus came there and gave us Candies. Everyone enjoyed Christmas and makes it Special Day.

There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.

Who was Palmiro Togliatti?

If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.

Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.

Tolyatti, the Russian city

The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.

Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.

Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.

The city is best known as the home of Russia's largest car manufacturer AvtoVAZ ( Lada ). For this reason, Tolyatti is often dubbed "Russia's motor city" or "Russia's Motown" (in reference to Detroit in the United States —the spiritual home of the American automotive industry). It was renamed after Italian communist politician Palmiro Togliatti in 1964. [12]

Stavropol was founded as a fortress in 1737 by the Russian statesman Vasily Tatishchev . [13] It was often imformally referred to as Stavropol-on-Volga to distinguish it from Stavropol , a larger city in southwest Russia, although Stavropol-on-Volga was never its official name. [14] [15]

The construction of the Kuybyshev Dam and Hydroelectric Station on the Volga River in the 1950s created the Kuybyshev Reservoir , which flooded the existing location of the city, and it was completely rebuilt on a new site.

In 1964, the city was chosen as the location of the new VAZ automobile plant: a joint venture between Fiat and the Soviet government. It was then renamed Tolyatti after Palmiro Togliatti , the longest-serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party , who had been instrumental in setting up the venture with Fiat. Much of the modern city was constructed in the 1960s to house the workers of the factory, and today AvtoVAZ dominates the economy of the city. [16]

Within the framework of administrative divisions , Tolyatti serves as the administrative center of Stavropolsky District , [1] even though it is not a part of it. [17] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the city of oblast significance of Tolyatti —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [2] As a municipal division , the city of oblast significance of Tolyatti is incorporated as Tolyatti Urban Okrug . [4]

For the administrative purposes, the city is divided into three districts:

• Avtozavodsky ( Автозаво́дский ), also called Novy Gorod (literally New City ), is the most modern; it was designed to host the workers of the city's AvtoVAZ factory, home of the Lada car;
• Tsentralny ( Центра́льный ), also called Stary Gorod (lit. Old City ), home of the city government and industrial center;
• Komsomolsky ( Комсомо́льский ), the oldest district, built to house Hydroelectrical Plant builders.

The city's main claim to fame has been automobiles Lada ( Zhiguli ) manufactured by AvtoVAZ car plant employing some 110,000 people: in cooperation with Italy's Fiat since 1970, with General Motors since 2001 [18] and with the Renault-Nissan Alliance since 2012, and once again becoming an independent, state-owned enterprise in 2022.

Other industries have moved into Tolyatti because it is close to abundant supplies of electricity and water. Petrochemicals are well represented in the city. Among the significant enterprises based there are " TogliattiAzot " (Russia's biggest ammonia manufacturer headed [ when? ] by Sergei Makhlai ) and " KuibyshevAzot " (a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturer and Russia's biggest caprolactam and polyamide producer). Other industries include building materials production, ship repair and electrical equipment and electronics. [ citation needed ]

In 2011 the Tolyatti Special Economic Zone was launched in order to develop the region further and diversify the economy of the city. Several auto-component producers (German Mubea and Japanese Sanoh among them) have since been registered, as well as large industrial manufacturers ( Praxair and Edscha ). By November 2012 the value of project investment totalled 10 billion Rubles and around 3000 jobs were being created. [19]

The transport system is well developed in the city. Public transport includes municipal buses and trolley-buses, and so-called "alternative" (commercial) transport or marshrutkas .

External transport routes are provided by two bus stations, two railway stations and a city harbour. Tolyatti has its airport as well, but it is used by personal aircraft only (the nearest international airport, Kurumoch , is located 40   km away, towards Samara ). The city is linked to the federal road network by the M5 "Ural" highway . [ citation needed ]

The creation of the Kuybyshev Reservoir in the 1950s destroyed much of the city's history, so almost all the city's cultural points of interest date from the Soviet period, but the city administration has continued to build new monuments and cathedrals. A recent notable event was the 1998 opening of the large Tatishchev Monument near the Volga . The Transfiguration Cathedral was completed in 2002.

Education is represented by over one hundred public and ten private schools, as well as several higher education institutions. Most notable ones include:

In the eyes of the Soviet leaders, Tolyatti was a perfect Soviet city (since most population migrated here during the construction of AvtoVAZ factories)   – many sports facilities appeared so that the "perfect Soviet person" could be healthy. The city has high-quality sports facilities: gymnasiums, swimming pools, ice arenas, association football and racing stadiums   — as a result, many athletes, including Olympic Champion Alexei Nemov , Stanley Cup winners Alexei Kovalev and Ilya Bryzgalov had moved to Tolyatti. Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin , and former Washington Capitals winger Viktor Kozlov and defenseman Alexei Tezikov were born there. Daria Kasatkina , a professional tennis player, was born there. [20]

Tolyatti is represented in almost every kind of team sports. Tolyatti's Lada-sponsored Ice Hockey Club broke the Moscow teams' domination of the game. The Lada women's football team has won the Russian championship several times   — and the Lada women's handball team, who are the Russian and European Champions, is the core for Russian national women's handball. Men's football ( FC Lada Togliatti ), basketball and handball teams also take part in national championships. As for the traditional national sport of Russia, bandy , there is a team founded in 2013, TOAZ, [21] which however only takes part in a recreational league.

Mega-Lada Togliatti who race at the Anatoly Stepanov Stadium are a record 17-times champions of Russia . [22]

Tolyatti has many parks, and many of these contain monuments of cultural, historical, and aesthetic interest. Examples include Victory Park with its Victory Monument and other monuments, Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory and other monuments, Central Park with its Mourning Angel (a memorial to victims of Soviet repression), large statue of Lenin , and other monuments, and other parks.

And there are other monuments outside the parks. The City Duma has been energetic in creating or designating historical and cultural monuments, ranging from the colossal equestrian Tatishchev Monument to the tumbledown Repin House and a monument to a faithful dog , and many other types.

There are a number of local newspapers published in Tolyatti: Ploshchad Svobody , Tolyattinskoye Obozreniye ( Tolyatti Observer ), business newspaper "Monday" ("Ponedelnik"), Volny Gorod , Gorodskiye Vedomosti , and a few others. In the end of the 1990s, Tolyattinskoye Obozreniye published a series of articles on a local crime group. The stories drew attention to the group's connections with the local police. [23] [24] Subsequently, Togliatti Review saw two of its editors (Valery Ivanov and Alexei Sidorov) killed in 2002–2003. [25] [26] [27] [28]

The only local-born FM-band radio station is Radio August   [ ru ] at 70.64 and 102.3   MHz.

Tolyatti is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious city. Most religious people in the city are of the Orthodox Christian faith. Muslims are the second largest group of believers. [29] Also in the city are organizations of almost all major religions: Old Believers , Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Buddhists and others.

During the morning rush hour of 31 October 2007, a bomb exploded on a passenger bus in the city, killing at least eight people and injuring about 50 in what Irina Doroshenko, a spokeswoman for the investigative wing of the local prosecutor's office, said could be a terrorist attack. [30] At the beginning of the investigation, it was believed to be the work of terrorists from the North Caucasus . [ citation needed ] Early reports indicated possible involvement of Chechen terrorist Doku Umarov . [ citation needed ] However, the officials later named a 21-year-old Evgeny Vakhrushev, who also died in the blast, as the only person to be responsible for the tragedy. [ citation needed ]

The city also has a reputation for gang violence . [31] [32]

The city has witnessed a mafia killing spree: there have been 550 commissioned killings in Tolyatti over 1998–2004, five of those murdered were journalists. [33]

Three chief architects of Tolyatti were victims of violent crimes: Valery Lopatin was shot to death on July 7, 2004, Mikhail Syardin and Aleksander Kiryakov were also injured in violent attacks. [34]

A former city mayor (1994–2000), Sergey Zhilkin   [ ru ] , was murdered on November 15, 2008. [35]

On December   13, 2008, Anatoly Stepanov, a vice-speaker of Duma of Samara Oblast, a former head of administration of Tsentralny City District of Tolyatti in 1991-1997 and Tolyatti mayor candidate in 2004, was attacked on a street and left with serious head injuries. He died in hospital on February   24, 2009. [36]

The city's mayor in 2000–2007, Nikolay Utkin   [ ru ] , was sentenced to seven years in prison on corruption charges. [37] [38] [39]

Mayor Antashev Sergey Alexandrovich was born on December 16, 1959, in the city of Saransk , Mordovia . In 1994 he moved to Tolyatti, was accepted to the post of director of the heating network enterprise of TEVIS. In 2000 he graduated from the International Market Institute with a degree in management. From 2000 to April 9, 2012 - Marketing Director - Energy Sales Director of TEVIS. Deputy of the Duma of the city district of Togliatti IV (from 2005 to 2009) and V (from 2008 to 2012) convocations. From April 2012 to February 2015, he served as deputy mayor of the city of Tolyatti on urban economy. On April 12, 2017, the Tolyatti City Council appointed Sergey Antashev as the mayor of the city. [40]

On March 4, 2021, Igor Ladyka was appointed acting mayor of the Togliatti city district, in connection with the resignation of Sergei Antashev. [41]

On April 30, 2021, Nikolai Rentz took office as head of the Togliatti city district. [42] [43] The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Governor of the Samara Region Dmitry Azarov. [44] [45]

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
