Let's face it, there are many people out there that write these kind of articles by just doing some research on what others say, and regurgitating it out without firsthand knowledge of the tools in question (or worse, have AI write it for them). That's not the case here.
As someone who's been publishing books for over 13 years, I've seen a lot writing tools go up and down. Some have been revolutionary game-changers, while others haven't lived up to the hype.
However, choosing the right writing app isn't just about picking the most popular one. Each writer has unique requirements and preferences. What works wonders for me might not for you. For example, Grammarly is hugely popular, but it's not what I recommend for long-form editing.
So, in order to create a top-notch overview of the best writing apps (for mobile devices, remember), I sent out surveys to my readers, and talked to some heavy-hitting authors in the industry – many of which I have been a consultant to as well.
Based on my observations, the results from those surveys, and talking with some of the most well-known authors out there, I feel very strongly that this is a subject I can truly tackle.
So, with that, let's jump into a list of what I think are the best writing mobile apps for authors.
Scrivener is the best mobile writing app for novelists, for now (again, see Atticus ). It’s more organized than any other app. It’s got awesome, ready-made templates for all sorts of genres and layouts. And it works great on iPad and iPhone. (Sorry, Android users.)
What is the best mobile app for writers? Scrivener on iOS is the best app for book writers. If you've read a few of my other articles, you may already know of my absolute love of Scrivener. If I had to recommend a single piece of writing software , Scrivener would be it — including for mobile devices.
Scrivener comes with a steep learning curve because it offers so much customizability and handy features. But there are plenty of free tutorials if you ever need help.
Scrivener for iOS is great for planning, drag-and-drop organizing, and even highlighting types of words. This means you can look for adverb overuse. From corkboard arrangement to keyboard shortcuts to word count goals , this app has almost as much power as its desktop app.
(For a complete review on the desktop software, check out my Scrivener review article, complete with coupon code .)
Once you're done, you can always transfer your work over to your devices with Scrivener via Dropbox . Or you can export to DOCX, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, HTML, or even Multi-Markdown.
The only downside: The one-time price is a little steep for a mobile app ($19.99), and you have to buy a separate license for iOS if you already have a license for macOS or Windows.
If you’re an Android user, I’d try Novlr, which is browser-based, so you can use it on any mobile device with an Internet connection.
(Sorry again, Android tablet/phone users.)

Follow these steps to use the discount coupon.
Scrivener is great for authors who love organization, distraction-free writing, and ready-made templates. Authors can place audio files, research files, images, and more into Scrivener’s sidebar. This means all your documents and research are in one window — it’s so convenient!
There’s a reason Microsoft Word is the industry standard text editor: it is versatile and easy to use.
Microsoft Office’s Word works well on mobile devices, running smoothly on iOS and Android. It creates beautiful, professional documents that you can export to multiple file formats.
MS Word is suitable for general writing, but I would not recommend it for novel writing. Although it is perfect for memos, email drafts, and print-ready documents, its organization capabilities are not as robust as Scrivener, Ulysses, or other excellent writing software.
Also, its spelling and grammar checker is not as powerful as ProWritingAid or Grammarly.
MS Word is expensive, but many people can use the app without an extra cost because of work or school giving them access.
Though Microsoft Word comes with some computers, it actually costs a pretty penny:
Microsoft Word is best used for general writing , business-related documents, and print-ready formatting options. It’s great for corporate America, journalism, students, and the like.
Write and format professional books with ease. Never before has creating formatted books been easier.
What is the best free writing app? Google Docs is the best free writing app on Android and iOS. If you’re on a budget, Google Docs is the perfect app for everything except proofreading, novel writing, or writing without the Internet.
It lets you customize headers, spacing, fonts — all the things you expect from a professional word processor. Google Docs autosaves every change you make and saves your version history. It exceeds at real-time collaboration, making it ideal for co-authors, bloggers, and ghostwriters .
Google Docs works on all major platforms and on most mobile devices — both Android and iOS.
Grammarly’s browser app is free to use and great for making sure your emails, memos, and other short-form projects look professional and error-free.
Check out my full review on Grammarly .
Grammarly offers a keyboard that checks your spelling and grammar on mobile devices, offering helpful suggestions on how to improve whatever you’re typing.
Not many people realize that Grammarly’s browser app can download your text as a DOCX file. This is great if you need to attach a DOCX file to your email instead of putting the text in the body.
You can also download Grammarly’s browser extension. This editing tool automatically checks your grammar and spelling when on Gmail, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media sites and email sites.
Read this article on the Best Email Services For Authors , like GetResponse or MailerLite .
Grammarly’s free version offers robust proofreading features that are way better than Microsoft Word or MacOS’s built-in grammar and spelling checker.
The premium version of Grammarly is fantastic, too. It offers many more suggestions to improve your writing style, readability, passive voice, and dialogue formatting .
However, if you are paying for a premium proofreader, I’d recommend ProWritingAid’s premium version . Its web version can also export to DOCX. Check out this video where I explain how ProWritingAid’s premium version is superior to Grammarly’s.
Grammarly’s browser application and browser extension make your emails, posts, and memos more professional and error-free. It gives you confidence and lets everyone know that you are not a joke.
Grammarly is a browser-based app and extension that runs on:
Grammarly’s free version is a powerful proofreading tool that ensures your emails, memos, or Facebook ads and posts are professional and error-free.
Grammarly’s premium version offers a lot more suggestions about word choice and writing style. It has multiple pricing options:
Screenwriting is a type of writing apart from a novel or article that is growing in popularity. Final Draft is an iOS-exclusive paid app dedicated strictly to screenwriting.
According to Final Draft’s own research, fewer than 5% of their users use Android mobile devices, so they won’t develop the Android app anytime soon.
Final Draft has a lot of great features, such as:
David Seidler, the Academy Award-winning author of The King's Speech , loves the ability to change his drafts quickly and on the go.
What app do screenwriters use to write? Screenwriters use the Final Draft app on iOS to write their screenplays.
If you're a serious screenwriter or looking to break into the biz, you should definitely consider getting this app. It’s expensive, but it is the industry standard. According to their website, Final Draft is “used by 95% of film and television productions.”
However, if you don't own an Apple device, Celtx Script is probably your best bet.
Final Draft does not intend on developing or maintaining an Android version of their app.
The full license for Final Draft 11 costs a one-time fee of $249.99, but there are usually deals you can snag to earn 20% off.
Final Draft is best used for writing screenplays, even on mobile devices. There’s a good reason it’s the industry standard for screenwriting.
Novlr is an aesthetically-pleasing, browser-based creative writing tool that automatically saves to the cloud. Its distraction-free Focus Mode is customizable and perfectly sets the mood for writing productively.
How do I start just writing? If you have trouble just getting started writing, consider using a productivity app like Novlr , Daily Prompt , or FocusWriter.

With its innovative dashboard functionality, Plottr is a fantastic outlining tool for mobile and desktop. It is a browser-based app, so you can access it from anywhere you have Internet, including from a phone or tablet.

You can organize plot points, create colorful characters, and build your world with ease on Plottr. It even comes with ready-made templates.

Plottr is an app available on all major platforms:
There are 3 tiers for Plottr:
Plottr is best used for outlining novels , but it is an organizational tool at its heart. You can use it to organize nonfiction or even screenplays.
When it comes to note-taking, look no further than Evernote . This award-winning app automatically syncs your notes to every device you have it installed on (only 2 devices with the free version).
Honestly, I am so thankful for my Evernote app. I'm a big fan of jotting down fresh new ideas on my phone. But notes aren't the only thing you can save. You can actually save web clippings, video, PDF, images, GIFs, and more (with a paid upgrade, of course).
On top of that, you're able to share your notes with other people. All you need is to grant the proper permissions to a co-author, friend, or ghostwriter , and voila!
Evernote is always improving. Though I think their table function could use an upgrade, Evernote releases free updates all the time.
The free version of Evernote is robust and useful. Having the “freemium” version of Evernote is still worth getting, even if you don’t plan on spending any money on the premium version.
The premium version of Evernote is separated into 2 versions:
Evernote’s award-winning app is best used for taking notes in many different ways on many different devices. It is intuitive, versatile, and beyond helpful.
When it comes to AI-driven conversation, brainstorming, and writing assistance, look no further than ChatGPT/ChatGPT Plus. This app brings the powerful capabilities of OpenAI's ChatGPT to your fingertips on any device where you have it installed.
For writers, ChatGPT can be invaluable for brainstorming, drafting, and editing text right on your phone. But it's not just limited to generating text. With the browser tool (available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers), it can search the internet, summarize articles, and even help you fact-check or find new ideas. And that's just some of what's available with the paid upgrade of ChatGPT Plus.
On top of that, you're able to share your conversations with others. All you need is to send the session link to a collaborator, friend, or editor, and voila!
The free version of ChatGPT is great for a lot of people, and runs on GPT 3.5 technology. However, if you want GPT-4 technology (which is far superior), you'll need ChatGPT Plus.
The premium version of ChatGPT Plus is: $20/month
ChatGPT Plus’s versatile app is best used for generating human-like text, aiding in content creation, brainstorming, or even casual conversation on many different devices. It is intuitive, creative, and an invaluable tool for writers.
Take my full featured video course on how to select the best keywords and categories for your book.
FromTextToSpeech.com is a browser-based app that turns up to 50,000 characters at a time into MP3 files that you can listen to or download. It is simple. Although it looks kind of sketchy, it is entirely safe and legit. It is the best free text to speech service available.
The most natural-sounding voice option is British English Harry. In fact, you will hear British English Harry all across the Internet — on YouTube, Twitch, etc. Many web users utilize British English Harry’s voice because it almost passes for a British human male.
Other text-to-speech apps either cost a lot of money or only allow a few hundred characters.
Read my article on Best Book Transcription Services for Authors .
I know authors who copy and paste in a chapter to FromTextToSpeech.com and listen to it while editing that same chapter. It really helps to be able to hear your words read back to you.
Unfortunately, FromTextToSpeech.com is sometimes down with no warning for upkeep and maintenance.
This is a browser-based application that works on all browsers and operating systems:
FromTextToSpeech.com is free-to-use. There is no premium version.
FromTextToSpeech.com is best used for converting your written word to spoken word. This may help you with editing, experimenting, or simply your own enjoyment.
You use the best tools when you write at home. You should use the best mobile writing apps to take your frantic phone scribbles to the next level.
Gone are the days of jotting down in your notepad, only to have a hard time deciphering it later.
Save time and effort by investing in your craft and selecting the “write” tools for the job. Even if you aren't at your primary workstation.
There may have been a few I missed out on. After all, the world of writing is ever-expanding.
And I know I've said it before: Sorry, Android users. While I understand the pros of being on the Android system, there are just so many more quality writing applications for Apple users.
When I’m not sipping tea with princesses or lightsaber dueling with little Jedi, I’m a book marketing nut. Having consulted multiple publishing companies and NYT best-selling authors, I created Kindlepreneur to help authors sell more books. I’ve even been called “The Kindlepreneur” by Amazon publicly, and I’m here to help you with your author journey.

What is the best writing app for non-fiction other than Scrivener? I want the same options, to see my chapters on a side bar and be able to put notes with each chapter. That is the basic requirement but other tools are nice, like word count, grammar, etc. Most of the writing apps I am finding are either simple writing, like Word or Goggle Docs, or for novels with characters, plots, etc. Scrivener is too time consuming to learn. Writing and editing takes long enough. (Novlr looks like the closest to what I want even though the app is based on novel writing). Hoping there might be another that I am unaware of. Anyone can answer!! I am using Word currently but really want to get moving on the writing with more organization.
I’m actually building one – Atticus.io. It’s actually combining scrivener and Vellum together – but we’re making the writing area much easier and intuitive. It’s in final beta now and should be releasing publicly mid July.
How about a review of dictation apps? You’ve got text to speech, but I want that turned around. Dragon, of course, but on a phone?
Good overview, Dave!
Two quick things about Google Docs (which I use): 1. It certainly can be used for full-length novels. I write all mine with it (one is 160,000 words). 1b. And it exports well to .docx and works fine with editors using Word’s track changes and commenting. 2. You can use the Grammarly extension with it.

A selection of tools for academic writing – from collaborating, time-tracking and project management to finding the perfect phrase or translation. We are continuously updating this list (latest update: April 2023).
I often get asked about my favourite academic writing tools. That’s why I compiled this scientific tools list for you with 19 great tools to support your academic writing. You can use all these scientific research tools for free and some of them have paid versions with additional features.
Just one word of caution: Exploring new academic writing tools can be a time-suck and distract you from getting your actual writing done. If you are one of those people who spend hours signing up for new software for academic writing and getting it set up, only to abandon the tool a few days or weeks later – then be careful reading this scientific tools list, and don’t get overenthusiastic. 😉
By the way, I don’t have any affiliation with any of the academic writing tools listed below, and none of these are affiliated links.
Here, we go, 19 tools for academic writing and scientific research I recommend in no particular order:
1. writefull.
This proof-reading tool for scientific texts is powered by AI and big data. You can integrate the Writefull app into Word or Overleaf for free. A reader of the blog brought my attention to this tool (thank you so much!) and I’ve only recently started using it, so I can’t give you a full-blown review just yet but so far the results are promising. Writefull is owned by Digital Science, a company that has released several Open Science apps, such as figshare, Overleaf and Altmetric.
Created by Dr John Morley from “The University Language Center” of Manchester University, the Phrasebank is a database of common phrases used in papers, dissertations and grant proposals – a real goldmine!
The phrases are organised both by the common sections in a paper such as the Introduction, Methods, Results or Discussion section. For example, in the tab for the Introduction section, one can find entries for “establishing the importance of the topic for the world or society” or “identifying a knowledge gap in the field of study”. If you click on the latter, you can find among others the following suggested phrases: “It is still unclear whether…”, “However, the behaviour of X has not yet been investigated” and “Causal factors leading to X remain speculative”.
You can also look for phrases by choosing a general language function. Some of the choices are “being cautious”, “describing trends”, “signalling transition”.
The Phrasebank is very useful to get inspiration for new wording but I do not endorse all entries. Sometimes you find language that is a bit clunky or overly complicated so do use your own judgement when you browse this academic writing tool. PS: You can also download the Academic Phrasebank as PDF or Kindle file.
If you’re looking for synonyms, thesaurus.com is the best online thesaurus I’ve found so far. It divides the synonyms based on different meanings of the word and indicates the relevance of the synonym by using three shades of orange.
Just one word of caution: Don’t fall into the trap of using too many synonyms in your academic writing. Being precise is so much more important than varying the words you are using in your writing. In particular for field-specific terminology, I advise against using synonyms .
This is a hot tip for researchers who need to transcribe interviews (hello, social scientists!), who like to record research ideas or those who like to write by dictating text into their phone. Otter is an AI-based transcription tool that works for English language recordings. The quality of the transcriptions is comparable to other transcription services using AI, meaning they are often not accurate and can give nonsensical, even comical results — especially when the recorded voice has a strong or unusual accent. Still, the automated and quick transcriptions (real time transcriptions are available too!) can be a good starting point and are a huge time saver. What’s cool about Otter compared to its competitors is that they give you 300 minutes of transcriptions per month for free!
There are many online dictionaries but Linguee is my favourite for academic writing. It suggests a translation on the basis of previous translations published on the internet. Therefore, this dictionary is especially great if you’re looking to not only translate a word but a certain turn of phrase or idiom. Linguee translates to and from English in over 20 languages. An essential academic writing tool for all non-native English speakers!
6. authorea.
The magazine “ TechCrunch ” describes Authorea as “a Google Docs for scientists”. On the academic writing platform, you can write, edit, and insert citations, figures and data. And it’s great for collaborative writing: Co-authors can access the same text at the same time, track the changes they made, insert comments and even live-chat during writing sessions. Documents can be imported from LaTeX and Word and exported as LaTeX, Word and PDF documents. You can also submit your article as a bioRxiv preprint straight from the Authorea platform. This software for academic writing is free for up to ten documents with limited sharing options.
Overleaf is to LaTeX users, what Authorea (see tool #6) is to Word users: an online editor that allows you to access and collaborate on your writing projects from anywhere. You can, for example, invite others to comment on your work. Overleaf offers some other neat collaborative writing features, such as a track-changes function, but – unfortunately – only on the paid plan. LaTeX may seem a bit intimidating at first but you actually get the hang of it quite fast (and feel like a coder 😎). Also, in my experience, you save a lot of time formatting your text (and feel smug about it when you talk to Word users 😁).
Slack is a chat tool that you can use in your lab or with your collaborators. Used in the right way, it allows you to save time by cutting down on emails and create a group atmosphere even if the members are not working in the same location. You can easily add files to the chats and create different channels for subgroups or certain topics. There also exist virtual communities on Slack you can join, such as the New PI Slack community for Assistant professors around the world.
Loom is a great scientific research tool when you want to share a quick video with a colleague, student or collaborator. This could be a recorded presentation or lecture, your comments on the paper of a co-author, or a tutorial on using a piece of software. You can record your screen, camera and microphone. The neat thing is that after you’re done recording, Loom auto-generates a link you can share.
Toggl is a time-tracking app that you can install on your phone and computer. There’s only one way of knowing how long certain writing tasks typically take you, and that is by tracking the time they took you to complete . Time-tracking has another great advantage: You can identify time-sucks in your day. And these may be less obvious than you think.
I like to use Toggl for time-tracking because it’s quick to use and integrates with various other scientific research tools I am using. You just need to click the big red power button to start or stop a recording and assign tracked times to different projects. This scientific research tool has paid plans but for most people the free basic plan will be sufficient.
Are you easily tempted to check your phone when you really should be writing? This app called Forest may be just right for you then. Once installed on your phone, you can start planting a virtual tree whenever you want to focus. It grows from a little plant to a full-grown tree. When you pick up your phone and leave the app, the tree dies. This way, you can build your forest representing the time you have spent on focused work (or quality time with your family and friends…). I’m not using Forest myself, but I’ve heard that it works really as an academic writing tool well for some people. Give it a go!
As Forest (see tool #11), Focusmate is an app to help you stay focused. Instead of gamification, the concept of Focusmate is based on social accountability. Here is how it works: You schedule a 50-minute virtual co-writing session with another Focusmate member, turn on your webcam when your session starts, greet your temporary co-worker and then get to work silently.
Even though being filmed while working is a little strange in the beginning, co-writing sessions work really well for a lot of researchers. This is why we offer co-writing sessions as part of our academic writing program, the Researchers’ Writing Academy, as well.
If Forest (tool #11) or Focusmate (#12) don’t get you to focus on your writing, you may need to go Cold Turkey . This software for academic writing blocks any other application and turns your computer into a typewriter. You can choose whether you want Cold Turkey to prevent you from digital distractions for a certain amount of time or until you’ve hit a certain word count. With the paid version, you can even access integrated productivity soundtracks and text formatting.
Not an app exactly, but free as well: Click the orange button below to have me walk you through my step-by-step system to write clear & concise papers for your target journals in a timely manner . This free academic writing training is perfect for you if you’re reading this blog post because you are procrastinating on writing your paper.
Trello is an excellent project management tool for your academic writing, which you can use for managing each of your writing projects, for creating a publication pipeline and as a daily and weekly to-do list. Trello is a great introduction into project management because it’s a lot easier to learn and use than most other project management software. For each project called a “Board”, you can create different “lists”, which are vertical collection of “cards”, which you can move between lists. You can add due dates, checklist lists, links, files and text to each card. To work collaboratively, you can leave comments on cards and assign them to members on your team. You can also use Trello as a brainstorming tool, using the cards just as you would use post-it notes.
Members of my online course, the Researchers’ Writing Academy , get access to Trello templates I created to easily manage their publication pipeline, the writing process for each of their scientific papers and all of their other daily, weekly and monthly tasks and projects.
Todoist is an alternative to Trello (see tool #16) or can be used in addition. It’s an online to-do list organiser and project management tool that comes as an app and browser version. You can organise your tasks in projects and schedule them for a certain day. This academic writing tool shows you today’s tasks as well as those for the next seven days. It also tracks your productivity, i.e. how many tasks you have completed.
Feedly is a neat RSS feed manager that helps you stay up to date with the scientific literature. Instead of getting email alerts from journals (because who wants to get more emails…) you can view and organise the literature you are interested in by following journals’ RSS feeds. You can not only use this for scientific literature but also subscribe to blogs, for example the one you’re reading right now, by simply putting the URL in the Feedly search: https://annaclemens.com/blog .
Are you a mindmapper? Then you need Xmind , a free mindmapping and brain-storming tool. It’s intuitive, looks good and does exactly what you want a mindmapping tool to do. The free version allows for embedding of hyperlinks, images, attachments, so you can really use it however you like! That’s all I can really say about it as I’m not using mindmapping myself. But I know scientists who swear by it!
Audio formats have become so popular (I’m a big podcast lover myself!) so it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that there now is an audio tool available for the scientific literature too: Audemic . This tool — completely free to use for individual researchers — creates summaries for you (that go beyond the abstract), lets you skip sections, highlight text and take notes while listening.
There are a few reference managers for your academic writing to choose from, some of which cost money. Zotero is free, open-source and doesn’t lack in functionality. You can easily save references from your browser, organise them in folders and with tags and create bibliographies with the right style. You can also create a citation library with your co-authors or share your library with others.
That’s it: 19 academic writing apps and scientific research tools to support your writing for free! However, the best academic writing software won’t make you more productive if you don’t rely on a streamlined writing process and if you aren’t using your writing sessions effectively. If you want to get your hands on a template to write scientific papers in a systematic fashion, sign up for this 1-hour writing training now. It’s free too!

Home > Blog > 10 Best Free and Paid Apps That Write Essay For You (and Improve Quality)
Essay writing is daunting for many students. It is so because you have to follow several rules and ethics. If you miss one point, the reader will get confused and not read the essay further. Writing a strong and best essay requires a lot of time for research, and data collection, including logical points, forming organized sentences, proofreading, and editing.
Then there is plagiarism, which is a common concern for students. If their essay doesn’t follow quality, content integrity, and uniqueness, they can be kicked out of education.
So how do you overcome the issue of writing the dreaded essay? You can opt to get your essay written by a professional writer. However, their services can be expensive, and you can only sometimes rely on them to deliver the essay within the timeframe. Sometimes, you may also get an essay with vague sentences, and passing on the essay as your own is cheating.
Fortunately, several apps write essays for you. No matter what topic you are writing about, these apps help you complete your essay quickly, save time, and get 100% unique essays without spelling, grammar, or style mistakes.

Regardless of talent or experience level, everyone can use tips to help improve their writing skills. Whether a young student, professional scribe, aspiring author, or somewhere in between, the best writers are unafraid of taking advice and consistently applying it to their work in order to make great creative strides.
Luckily, in 2022 there is no shortage of cost-free digital applications specifically designed to improve a writer's daily process while upgrading the quality of the results. From idea-generating tools and daily writing assignments to helpful visual layouts and minimized workspaces, the best free writing apps currently available offer a little something for everyone.
As every writer knows, practice makes perfect. The more someone writes, the quicker they can become an expert. One great free app to help people get into the daily habit of writing consistently is 750 Words , an app that encourages writers to stay committed by completing 750 words a day (roughly 3 standard pages).
The app automatically tracks a writer's word count and rewards points for each completed assignment, allowing a fun way for the users to compile monthly scores. With over 555,000 free users to date, 750 Words is ideal for those who need extra motivation to stay in the creative process day in and day out.
Sometimes, all a writer needs is a swift kick in the pants to get the creative juices flowing. One helpful free writing app that encourages its users to consistently stay active is Daily Page , which provides prompts and specific writing assignments every day to ensure a writer stays focused and in the groove at all times.
A great tool to get writers into the habit of being comfortable with writing on a daily basis, Daily Pages also forces its users to get used to staring at a blank page, a crippling reality that often deters writers from progressing. Users can either receive daily reminders or emails that provide writing prompts or choose to free-write their own topics, with the app tracking past assignments to monitor improvement as well.
Organization is every writer's best friend. The more orderly they can keep their thoughts, the clearer their writing will eventually become. Enter EverNote , a free app (with monthly limits and paid upgrades) designed for note taking, organizing, task management, and archiving. As such, a perfect tool for keeping a writer's scattered thoughts and important notes in one organized area.
While many use EverNote for checklists, note-taking, to-do lists, and other short-form scribblings, the 60 MB of free ram allows for more expressive long-form writing assignments that users can think of. If nothing else, EverNote is ideal for ensuring writer's meet their deadlines on time.
Given the multitude of devices, gadgets, and screens that vie for everyone's attention, remaining focused in 2022 is harder than it's ever been. For writers who require deeper concentration to finish assignments and stay focused on the task at hand, FocusWriter is a free app specifically engineered to combat the problem of distractions.
FocusWriter minimizes a writer's workspace by utilizing a hide-away interface that eliminates all outside visual distractions and fully immerses a writer into the page of text and nothing else. The app comes with timers and alarms for those who want to increase writing speed, as well as spell-check, live stats, daily goals, customizable themes, and even a typewriter sound effect to really immerse a writer.
While Grammarly has an upgraded pay option for $29.95 per month, the basic free version is one of the most universally utilized writing apps in 2022. Compatible with Microsoft and nearly every CMS and WordPress, the extremely useful tool provide several helpful tips and editing suggestions that go far beyond a simple spell-checker.
Using color-coded underlining to highlight specific areas of text that need improvement, Grammarly will suggest ways to make sentences flow better, avoid confusing syntax, improve clarity, and collate spelling errors, the corrections for which combine to upgrade the overall grammatical accuracy of the text. While the advanced version offers even more cool features, the free version of Grammarly is easily one of the best free writing tools in 2022.
A writer's arsenal is their vocabulary. The more words they are comfortable using, the more dynamic their prose will inevitably become. An ideal free app to help expand a writer's vernacular is Graph Words , which visually displays synonyms and antonyms like a mind map while one types, functioning as a digital thesaurus of sorts. Writers can simply drag a cursor over any word they write and instantly access a web of related terminology.
Connected to WordNet, a massive lexical database that has a wealth of English-language words categorized by adjective, noun, verb, and adverb, Graph Words will save writers immense time by no longer having to thumb through old thesaurus texts while vastly improving their lexicon. It's even a great tool when paired with some of the best free reading apps for kids .
One of the biggest challenges a writer faces is expressing their ideas clearly and concisely. A helpful tool to improve clarity includes Hemingway , a free app specifically designed to make a person's writing bold and clear.
The app uses color-coding to highlight specific areas of improvement, such as adverbs and weakening phrases highlighted in blue, and passive voice highlighted in green. Red is used to highlight sentences that are too dense and confusing, and yellow is used to denote sentences that are too long and needed to be broken up. A perfect tool for writers and copywriters who want to make their text as syntactically accurate and concise as possible, Hemingway is the place to be.
As every writer knows, consistently finding a muse to avoid writer's block is one of the keys to staying creatively productive. For writers who struggle to come up with ideas and concepts to write about, check out Hubspot's Blog Ideas Generator to help find inspiration for new content.
The free writing app asks its users to simply enter three different nouns into a search bar. Afterward, a week's worth of topics related to the nouns will be generated and displayed on the screen for the writer to explore. The great thing is the topics can be used for any type of writing, not just blog posts, making it useful for every type of writer. To avoid becoming like a movie character with writer's block , give Hubspot a try.
For many writers, visualization is the key to making inroads into a piece of prose. One helpful free writing app that understands this better than any is MilaNote , which allows users to organize their thoughts and concepts into visual boards. Ideal for a screenwriter or director illustrating storyboards or for general brainstorming, MilaNote has tons of options for every type of writer. As such, it's ideal for use with the best free photo collage apps like Canva as well.
Offering a macro glimpse to keep a writer's work on course at all times, MilaNote is exceptional for creative writers as it provides in-depth character templates, story outlines, fast research tips, mindmaps, and all sorts of other useful tools to help visualize and translates their ideas onto the page.
Arguably the best of the bunch, ProWriting Aid is a free app that serves as a digital editor, writing coach, and style guide all packaged as one. Writers can upload documents and get 20 minutes of free feedback. The reports will advise writers on how to improve everything from syntactical flow, overused words, unclear transitions, vague verbiage, and the like.
After the reports are issued, writers will get an in-depth overview of their work replete with key tips for rapid improvement to make the text as clear and strong as it can be. As writers apply the advice to future assignments, pop-up blogs and vlogs will appear and provide even more helpful information on how to become a better scribe.

An Apple Pencil can help turn your iPad into an even more powerful computing device, especially if you have the right apps installed. Here are some of the best apps to use with an Apple Pencil on your iPad.
Before you jump into the abyss of amazing third-party apps, don't forget that Apple Notes is one of the best note-taking apps available for Apple users . The built-in Notes app fully supports the Apple Pencil, and it works flawlessly.
Make a new note, then just start writing with the Apple Pencil. You can scribble, draw, or do whatever else you want. Tap the Pencil icon at the bottom to reveal the toolbar. From here, you can switch to a pen or a marker tip and pick any color you want.
Tap the lasso tool icon to make a section. With it, simply draw over part of the note, and you'll be able to pick it up and move it around.
The best reason to use Apple Notes as a quick note-taking app is its integration with iPadOS. Tap on the Lock screen with your Apple Pencil, and you'll instantly open the Notes app with either a blank note or the last note you accessed (you can specify this in the app's settings).
Notability is a multipurpose note-taking app, especially for students. When you open a note, you can choose to write with your Apple Pencil or type with the keyboard (and easily alternate between them).
Plus, you can record audio in the background. This makes Notability the best tool for taking lecture notes. Thanks to the infinite scrolling feature, you can change the background to show graph paper and write as much as you need. Notability also marks page breaks, which makes it easy to export notes as PDFs or print them later.

Astropad Slate can take your Mac experience to a new level. The app turns your iPad and Apple Pencil into an input device for your Mac. You can draw or write with the Apple Pencil on your iPad's screen and interact with your Mac.
You can pretty much use your Apple Pencil as a mouse cursor. The experience basically turns your iPad into a giant and precise trackpad for your Mac. It's perfect for artists to use like a no-screen pen tablet and with desktop creative programs.
When handwriting on the app, even without an Apple Pencil, the app offers gesture input like one- and two-finder touch to scroll and zoom. With compatible iPad Pro models, you can use the Hover gesture, allowing you to move your Apple Pencil over the top of the tablet. Tap the Apple Pencil to the screen to click. The app also offers a simulated Hover gesture for older models

Linea Sketch sits somewhere between a simple doodling app and more professional drawing tools. It gives you the simplicity of doodling whatever you want, with power user tools like unlimited layers, transform tools, automatic ruler, grids, and more.
Like every other drawing app, Linea takes a canvas-based approach. Unlike Notability, you won't find an endlessly scrolling page here. However, you can create multiple canvases and organize them into projects.
The grid tool gives you backgrounds for note-taking, drawing, and user interface design. Linea Sketch's genius lies in its simple design. The tools are arranged in two panels on either side of the screen, letting you ignore features you don't need.
However, this is a double-edged sword, as many of Linea's interesting features are hidden behind buttons. Once you get comfortable with the app, you should create a blank page and try all the tools at least once.

Luminar is an excellent app for editing photos on an iPad with your Apple Pencil. Even if you're a beginner, you'll find it easy to use. One of its top features is a wide variety of AI assistance. For example, the Structure AI feature can unlock hidden details and clarity in an image by enhancing contrasts and texture.
You can also dive into photo editing with a plethora of other editing features like curves, details, photo filters, and more. The app also allows you to edit RAW images directly on your iPad, helping you preserve maximum image quality and flexibility. The Apple Pencil makes it easy to quickly edit and provide more details in the final process.

Procreate is the ultimate Apple Pencil app. If you can dream it, and you have the skills, you can probably make it using Procreate on your iPad. If you don't want to use Photoshop, Procreate is rightly positioned as an Adobe suite replacement.
However, Procreate is best suited for drawing and painting. It's not really designed for graphic design and vector work. If you ever run into any issues, make sure to see some tips to fix the Apple Pencil if it ever glitches in Procreate .

Affinity Designer 2 is a top-notch and full-featured vector design app for iPads. It brings almost all the features of the Mac app to your iPad in an intuitive manner.
At first glance, you might feel like there's a lot going on as the app covers three edges of the screen with toolbars. But don't be overwhelmed; tap each button, and you'll see detailed options appear.
To make working easier, Affinity has three different modes: Vector , Pixel , and Export . The Vector mode is for drawing, while Pixel mode is similar to using a raster app like Photoshop. If you're using Designer to design graphics or user interfaces, the Export mode makes it easy to export individual assets.
The app is fast and slick. Start creating points and paths, and you're on your way to creating an illustration. The features you expect from a good vector design app (pen tool, node tool, fill tool, live shapes) are all here, and they've been made more intuitive for a touchscreen and the Apple Pencil.

Flow brings the iconic Moleskine notebook to your iPad. Just like with a real Moleskine, if you can dream it, it's possible to create using the app and an Apple Pencil.
One of the app's most unique features is that documents have infinite width, so you can simply pan and continue the drawing. And with a virtual toolset, you can create custom tools available with just a single tap.
The app is free to download. A subscription unlocks cloud storage and backup for all documents and tools so that you can start on one iPad and then pick up work on another.

Coloring is known to reduce stress and anxiety. The mere act of taking time out of your busy life and focusing on coloring can be meditative. And you don't need to buy an adult coloring book or colored pencils to get started. All you need is an iPad coloring app.
Pigment has a collection of more than 4,000 coloring pages. You'll certainly find something that strikes your fancy, as it has everything from simple nature drawings to complex mandalas that you can really take your time with.
The app has two coloring modes. If you want, you can tap on a shape to only color inside it. No matter how inaccurate you are, the color won't bleed outside the selection. If you want a more realistic drawing experience, don't tap on the shape before you start coloring.

Even the most novice drawer can still use an Apple Pencil with an iPad for some fun results. With Sticker Doodle, you can use your Apple Pencil to draw anything and turn it into a sticker you can send to others via iMessage.
You can also create sticker packs for WhatsApp , Telegram, and even Discord. Slack users can export drawings as emojis for use on the platform.
Thanks to iCloud support, you can start on a sticker on your iPhone and finish it on your iPad with an Apple Pencil. You can create five stickers with the free version; you'll need to pay a one-time fee of $1.99 to remove this limitation.
Download: Sticker Doodle (Free, in app-purchases available)
As we've seen, the Apple Pencil is truly a remarkable tool when paired with iPad apps designed for it. So, grab some of the best apps for your Apple Pencil and see what you can create on your iPad.

I've been around technology for long enough that very little excites me, and even less surprises me. But shortly after Open AI's ChatGPT was released, I asked it to write a WordPress plugin for my wife's e-commerce site . When it did, and the plugin worked, I was indeed surprised.
That was the beginning of my deep exploration into chatbots and AI-assisted programming. Since then, I've subjected 10 large machine models (LLMs) to four real-world tests.
How to use ChatGPT to write: Resumes | Excel formulas | Essays | Cover letters
Unfortunately, not all chatbots can code alike. It's been 18 months since that first test, and even now, five of the 10 LLMs I tested can't create working plugins.
In this article, I'll show you how each LLM performed against my tests. There are two chatbots I recommend you use, but they cost $20/month. The free versions of the same chatbots do well enough that you could probably get by without paying. But the rest, whether free or paid, are not so great. I won't risk my programming projects with them or recommend that you do until their performance improves.
Also: How I test an AI chatbot's coding ability - and you can too
I've written a lot about using AIs to help with programming . Unless it's a small, simple project, like my wife's plugin, AIs can't write entire apps or programs. But they excel at writing a few lines and are not bad at fixing code.
Rather than repeat everything I've written, go ahead and read this article: How to use ChatGPT to write code: What it can and can't do for you .
If you want to understand my coding tests, why I've chosen them, and why they're relevant to this review of the 10 LLMs, read this article: How I test an AI chatbot's coding ability - and you can too .
Let's start with a comparative look at how the chatbots performed:
Next, let's look at each chatbot individually. I'll discuss nine chatbots, even though the above chart shows 10 LLMs. The results for GPT-4 and GPT-4o are both included in ChatGPT Plus. Ready? Let's go.
Best overall ai chatbot for coding.
ChatGPT Plus with GPT-4 and GPT-4o passed all my tests. One of my favorite features is the availability of a dedicated app. When I test web programming, I have my browser set on one thing, my IDE open, and the ChatGPT Mac app running on a separate screen.
Also: I put GPT-4o through my coding tests and it aced them - except for one weird result
In addition, Logitech's Prompt Builder , which pops up using a mouse button, can be set up to use the upgraded GPT-4o and connect to your OpenAI account, making it a simple thumb-tap to run a prompt, which is very convenient.
The only thing I didn't like was that one of my GPT-4o tests resulted in a dual-choice answer, and one of those answers was wrong. I'd rather it just gave me the correct answer. Even so, a quick test confirmed which answer would work. But that was a bit annoying. I didn't have that issue in GPT-4, so for now, that's the LLM setting I use with ChatGPT when coding.
Best ai chatbot for llm testing.
I seriously considered listing Perplexity Pro as the best overall AI chatbot for coding, but one failing kept it out of the top slot: how you log in. Perplexity doesn't use username/password or passkey, and doesn't have multi-factor authentication. All it does is email you a login pin. The AI also doesn't have a separate desktop app, as ChatGPT does for Macs.
What sets Perplexity apart from other tools is that it can run multiple LLMs. While you can't set an LLM for a given session, you can easily go into the settings and choose the active model.
Also: Can Perplexity Pro help you code? It aced my programming tests - thanks to GPT-4
For programming, you'll probably want to stick to GPT-4o, because that aced all our tests. But it might be interesting to cross-check code across the different LLMs. For example, if you have GPT-4o write some regular expression code, you might consider switching to a different LLM to see what that LLM thinks of the generated code.
As we'll see below, most LLMs are unreliable, so don't take the results as gospel. However, you can use the results to give you more things to check your original code. It's sort of like an AI-driven code review.
Just don't forget to switch back to GPT-4o.
Best free ai chatbot for coding.
ChatGPT is available to anyone for free. While both the Plus and free versions support GPT-4o, which passed all my programming tests, there are limitations when using the free app.
OpenAI treats free ChatGPT users as if they're in the cheap seats. If traffic is high or the servers are busy, the free ChatGPT will only make GPT-3.5 available to free users. The tool will only allow you a certain number of queries before it downgrades or shuts you off.
Also: How to use ChatGPT: What you need to know now
I've had several occasions when the free version of ChatGPT effectively told me I'd asked too many questions.
ChatGPT is a great tool, as long as you don't mind getting shut down sometimes. Even GPT-3.5 did better on the tests than all the other chatbots, and the test it failed was for a fairly obscure programming tool produced by a lone programmer in Australia.
So, if budget is important to you and you can wait when cut off, go for ChatGPT free.
Best free ai chatbot for coding and research.
I'm threading a pretty fine needle here, but because Perplexity AI' s free version is based on GPT-3.5, the test results were measurably better than the other AI chatbots.
Also: 5 reasons why I prefer Perplexity over every other AI chatbot
From a programming perspective, that's pretty much the whole story. But from a research and organization perspective, my ZDNET colleague Steven Vaughan-Nichols prefers Perplexity over the other AIs.
He likes how Perplexity provides more complete sources for research questions, how it cites its sources, how it organizes the replies, and how it provides questions to further searches.
So if you're programming, but also doing other research, consider the free version of Perplexity.
I tested nine chatbots, and four passed most of my tests. The other chatbots, including a few pitched as great for programming, each only passed one of my tests -- and Microsoft's Copilot didn't pass any .
I'm mentioning them here because people will ask, and I did test them thoroughly. Some of them do just fine for other work, so I'll point you to their more general reviews if you're just curious about how they function.
Meta AI is Facebook's general-purpose AI. As you can see above, it failed three of our four tests.
Also: How to get started with Meta AI in Facebook, Instagram, and more
The AI did generate a nice user interface but with zero functionality. And it did find my annoying bug, which is a fairly serious challenge. Given the specific knowledge required to find the bug, I was surprised it choked on a simple regular expression challenge. But it did.
Meta Code Llama is Facebook's AI designed specifically for coding help. It's something you can download and install on your server. I tested it running on a Hugging Face AI instance.
Also: Can Meta AI code? I tested it against Llama, Gemini, and ChatGPT - it wasn't even close
Weirdly, even though both Meta AI and Meta Code Llama choked on three of four of my tests, they choked on different problems. AIs can't be counted on to give the same answer twice, but this result was a surprise. We'll see if that changes over time.
Anthropic claims the 3.5 Sonnet version of its Claude AI chatbot is ideal for programming. After failing all but one test, I'm not so sure.
If you're not using it for programming, Claude may be a better choice than the free version of ChatGPT.
Also: 4 things Claude AI can do that ChatGPT can't
My ZDNET colleague Maria Diaz reports that Claude can handle uploaded files, process more words than the free version of ChatGPT, provide information roughly a year more current than GPT-3.5, and access websites.
Gemini Advanced is Google's $20 pro version of its Gemini (formerly Bard) chatbot. I expected the tool to do better than one out of four. Interestingly, it passed the one test that every AI other than GPT-4/4o failed -- knowledge of that fairly obscure programming language produced by one programmer in Australia.
Also: 3 ways Gemini Advanced beats other AI assistants, according to Google
So, if it knew that language, why couldn't it handle basic regular expressions or other first-year programming student problems?
You'd think the company with the "Developers! Developers! Developers!" mantra in its DNA would have an AI that does better on the programming tests. Microsoft produces some of the best coding tools on the planet. And yet, Copilot did badly .
Also: What are Microsoft's different Copilots? Here are the differences and how you can use them
The one positive thing is that Microsoft always learns from its mistakes. So, I'll check back later and see if this result improves.
The results of my tests were fairly surprising, especially given the big investments of Microsoft and Google. But this area of innovation is improving at warp speed , so we'll be back with updated tests and results over time. Stay tuned.

7 reasons why you might want to change your will.
You may have written your will already, but that doesn't always mean your needs and wishes are always going to stay the same.
We know it can be tempting to put off writing your will. It feels easier to wait until you’ve bought the dream house, met the right partner, had your first child and achieved everything you had planned in life, before writing a will you'll inevitably have to change.
But we never know what's around the corner, and not changing your will as things in your life change, can leave all your hard-earned assets, and the people you want to inherit them, vulnerable.
Think of your will as a living document that grows and changes alongside you with every major life change. This can take the pressure off trying to future proof every decision.
1. there’s a new baby in town.
A new baby in the family, be it a child, grandchild, niece or nephew can be an important prompt to think about updating your will. You may want to reconsider how you’re splitting your money or you may want to give your newest and smallest family member a special gift like a favourite ring or family photographs.
Life can change quickly, and that means the people closest to you can change too. This can be another reason you may want (or need) to change your will.
If you’ve got married since you wrote your will, any will you already had in place is automatically revoked, unless it was written in contemplation of marriage. A revoked will means it’s treated like it does not exist, so if there is no earlier will the laws of intestacy will apply.
If you get divorced, your will is not automatically revoked. But it does affect how your will is interpreted. So it’s still important to change your will so it reflects your most up to date wishes.
This doesn’t mean you have to cut someone out entirely or give your entire estate to your partner now that you’re married, but it's important to think about how you'd like to pass on the things you own.
Just like getting married for the first time, a second marriage will revoke your previous will, unless it was made in contemplation of marriage.
Should you remarry and die first, your new spouse or civil partner will inherit the first £322,000 of your estate plus half of anything over that value. They’re also entitled to inherit all of your personal possessions and any interest from the date of your death. What’s left will then be shared equally between your children. This may mean that your children from a previous relationship end up with very little, or nothing at all.
Under the laws of intestacy, any step-children will not inherit anything from your estate automatically.
Making an-up-to-date will is the best way to make sure your children and step-children are protected.

When you buy a house for the first time, move house or own multiple properties, it’s important to take a look at your will to see how it needs changing. Moving forward in life isn’t always easy; we lose the people we love along the way. After becoming a cat parent, or a puppy’s new best friend, it’s a good idea to think about who’d take care of them once you’re gone. Writing it in your will helps make sure the best person ends up looking after your precious Whiskers.
Maybe you’ve realised you want to include a certain charity in your will or you’ve decided to switch who gets the vinyls and who gets your favourite guitar around. Once you see your will as the living document it is - you can start to get personal and meaningful with it now you’ve taken the pressure of it only being made once.
