Culver’s announces annual FFA Essay Contest

culver's essay contest

PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — Advocating for the importance of agriculture and agricultural education has long been a commitment for Culver’s.

This year, in its ninth annual FFA Essay Contest, the national restaurant chain is partnering with U.S. Farmers & Ranchers in Action and the Decade of Ag movement for the first time to energize students around the creation of a sustainable and resilient agricultural future.

Culver’s longstanding relationship with FFA is part of its Thank You Farmers Project, an initiative that aims to advocate for the positive impact of agriculture while investing in agricultural education in order to create a more resilient and sustainable world.

Culver’s has donated over $4 million to agricultural causes through the Thank You Farmers Project since the program’s founding in 2013.

“There’s never been a more important time to have passionate and energized young leaders in agriculture, and FFA is at the forefront of making that a reality,” said Alison Demmer, Culver’s marketing and public relations manager and former Wisconsin FFA president.

“Partnering with USFRA and their Decade of Ag movement this year is the perfect opportunity to get students excited to share their ideas for a climate-smart, sustainable future of agriculture.”

Three FFA members will be selected as winners, earning prizes of $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 for their FFA chapters to pursue additional educational projects and learning initiatives. Culver’s has awarded over $115,000 in prizes to contest finalists since 2015.

This year’s contest focuses on the Decade of Ag movement, which is facilitated by USFRA and brings together more than 160 organizations and leaders from the food and agriculture industries to work toward a climate-smart, sustainable future.

Culver’s has supported the movement since its official endorsement in 2020, and Culver’s Chief Marketing Officer Julie Fussner also serves as a member of USFRA’s board of directors.

This year’s essay prompt is: As a member of FFA and a future agricultural leader, what excites you about a movement like the Decade of Ag?

Written essays of 1,000 words or less and videos of five minutes or less will be accepted at culvers.com/essaycontest until the deadline at 9 a.m. CT on May 1.

Students must be active members of their FFA chapter for the 2023-2024 school year to be eligible.

PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. , Feb. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Culver's is continuing its tradition of celebrating National FFA Week by launching its fifth annual FFA Essay Contest. Three essay writers will be chosen to receive $7,500 , $5,000 or $2,500 for their FFA chapters. The essay contest is an opportunity for students to show their knowledge of—and passion for—the agricultural industry.

This year, contestants are being asked to respond to this:

  • The average age of a farmer is 58. Why is it important for more young people to get involved with agriculture? Why should they be excited to join the agricultural industry?

FFA members are encouraged to submit essays of 1,000 words or less at Culvers.com/essaycontest until April 8, 2019 , at 5 p.m. CT .

FFA chapters can use the awarded funds for agricultural education initiatives and projects or to attend the National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis , Oct. 30–Nov. 2, 2019.

"We know how important it is to get young people involved in agriculture—they're our country's future," said Jessie Kreke , Culver's senior marketing manager. "This essay contest is our way to both show FFA members that we support them and to hear about their passions and hopes for the future."

Culver's essay contest is part of the restaurant's Thank You Farmers ® Project , which is focused on making sure we have enough wholesome food to serve our growing population by supporting agricultural education programs that encourage smart farming. To date, the Thank You Farmers Project has raised over $2 million in support of the National FFA Organization and Foundation, local FFA chapters and a variety of local agricultural organizations. Learn how last year's essay contest winners used their winning funds.

Culver’s Thank You Farmers® Project Celebrates Ten Years, Reaches $5 Million in Donations

With help of guests, restaurant chain raised $1 million in charitable contributions in 2023 to support future of agriculture

PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis.—December 13, 2023— Culver’s Thank You Farmers Project celebrated its tenth year by reaching a major milestone: $5 million in total funds raised to support the mission of advocating for the positive impact agriculture has on the world. This achievement includes a single-year-record $1 million raised in 2023 through systemwide and local charitable initiatives alike.

Fueled by generous guest contributions in events throughout each year, the Thank You Farmers Project directly supports people and organizations working to bring positive change to the agriculture industry. Beneficiaries include change agents in Culver’s local communities along with national organizations working to advance the industry on a broader scale, such as the National FFA Organization and U.S. Farmers and Ranchers in Action (USFRA).

“Culver’s is proud to celebrate ten years of the Thank You Farmers Project, and we sincerely thank all of our guests who have joined us over the years in supporting the future of the agriculture industry,” said Alison Demmer, Culver’s marketing and public relations manager. “Every time our guests choose Culver’s, they’re supporting the agriculture industry we all rely on. We look forward to accomplishing even more with their help in the next decade and beyond.”

Through the Thank You Farmers Project, Culver’s strives to show its gratitude to farmers and others working in the agriculture industry, support agriculture’s role in creating climate-smart initiatives and fund agricultural education programs in collaboration with the National FFA Organization. Culver’s brought these goals to life in several notable ways throughout 2023, including:

  • Scoops of Thanks Day , also in its ninth year, offered guests the opportunity to get a single scoop of Fresh Frozen Custard in exchange for a $1 donation to local FFA chapters and other agricultural education organizations. Guests donated a total of $153,464 in the fundraiser.
  • In the Concretes for a Cause fundraiser event, Culver’s donated $1 from each Concrete Mixer sold systemwide over a three-day period to local hunger relief initiatives, totaling $488,724.
  • Culver’s celebrated the nation’s hardworking farmers and ranchers in the To Farmers With Love Contest , as guests nominated a farmer in their own life to win a prize. Out of 2,246 total entries, fifteen winners will soon be selected to win a $500 cash prize, Culver’s gift cards and swag, along with a $575 donation given to their local FFA chapter in their name.
  • The ninth annual FFA Essay Contest , in conjunction with the National FFA Organization and USFRA, granted a total of $15,000 to the FFA chapters of three winning students to support agriculture leadership and education opportunities.

Guests can learn more about the impact Culver’s has made on the future of agriculture in the first decade of the Thank You Farmers Project through a helpful infographic here.
