Review: ‘Udanpaal’

Director Karthik Seenivasan’s ‘Udanpaal’ is an exceptionally well made dark comedy drama that, while making us laugh, also makes us ponder about the deteriorating standards of individuals when it comes to morality, gratitude and love

Director Karthik Seenivasan’s ‘Udanpaal’ is an exceptionally well made dark comedy drama that, while making us laugh, also makes us ponder about the deteriorating standards of individuals when it comes to morality, gratitude and love.

It might be a simple story but it is told with a lot of passion and conviction. Also, the story seems to be the outcome of careful observation of events happening around us everyday. As a result, it immediately strikes a chord with audiences and manages to catch their attention.

The story revolves around Vinayagam (Charlie), a man who lives with his son Paraman (Linga), daughter-in-law Prema (Abarnathi) and grandson Vigan (Master Dharshith Santhosh) in his self-earned property.

Paraman, who took over his father’s video shop business at a time when it was flourishing, hasn’t been in tune with the times and has ended up a loser. He is now neck-deep in debt and does not know how to get out of the quagmire that he finds himself in.

To pay off his debts and start afresh, he wants his dad to sell of the house they live in. However, he does not have the nerve to ask his dad himself.

So, under the pretext of conducting a ‘padayal’ function for his late mother, who passed away five years ago, he invites his younger sister Kanmani (Gayathrie Shankar) home and asks her to ask their father in his stead.

She agrees in the hope of getting a portion of the proceeds for her husband, Murali (Vivek Prasanna), to start a business.

Both brother and sister approach their dad with their request to sell off the house. However, Vinayakam is smart and sees through their game. He flatly refuses to sell the house and heads out to a complex that he visits often.

While Kanmani is disappointed with their dad’s decision, Paraman gets desperate as he has moneylenders knocking on his door and issuing warnings.

It is at this time that news breaks out that the complex that Vinayakam had gone to had collapsed and that all those in the complex at the time of its collapse were feared dead.

Initially, Paraman, his wife and his sister all get anxious about Vinayakam’s safety, hoping against hope that he is alright. There’s frenzy and anxiety all around.

However, all that changes the moment they get to know that the government has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to the families of all those killed in the collapse and Rs Two lakhs to the families of those injured. What happens then is what the film is all about…

The film has some fine performances coming from all its cast members including Charlie, Gayathrie, Vivek Prasanna, Linga, Abarnathi and Dheena but the performances of Gayathrie, Vivek Prasanna and Linga have to be rated higher than the others because of the difficulty levels of their roles.

Take Gayathrie’s character Kanmani for instance. She comes across as a caring daughter and a concerned wife controlling her loafer husband in one instant and in a flash, changes shades to become a selfish sibling and a scheming wife being controlled by a greedy husband the next instant.

Through the film, her character is so dynamic that it keeps changing shades once every few minutes. In one particular sequence, when their brother Parthiban (Dheena) points out to both Paraman and Kanmani that what they are doing is wrong, the way she weeps and shifts the blame solely onto her elder brother, is just phenomenal. Gayathrie is outstanding as she defines clearly the different shades of grey in her highly complex character.

Vivek Prasanna, who plays Gayathri’s husband Murali, has an equally difficult character to play. He plays an opportunistic loafer, for whom money comes first. He too comes up with a superb performance and in fact, steals the show on quite a few occasions. Thanks to his precision and presentation, the comedy scenes work well and make the film what it is. If Vivek Prasanna had got his timing wrong, the film could have well gone on to become a tragedy from being a dark comedy.

Linga as son Paraman delivers an admirable performance as well. Burdened by the responsibilities of being a son, a father and a husband, Paraman is desperate to find means and ways to provide for his family. While through the film he is shown as a person who is desperate for money and will do anything for it, there are those brief but precious moments in the film when his inherent good nature comes to the fore and Linga defines these moments quite clearly for the audience with his powerful performance.

For instance, there is a scene where he clutches the feet of his dad for couple of seconds before letting it go. Just that look at his dad conveys the gratitude and love he has for his dad.

Sakthi Balaji’s music and Madhan Christopher’s visuals are apt. Madan’s editing keeps the film sleek and slim and entertaining from start to finish.

On the whole, ‘Udanpaal’ is a good film that is worth a watch!

Udanpaal Review: Karthik Sreenivasan's film is not only a delightful laugh riot but also makes us mull over degenerating family relationships

Two siblings try to make use of their father's demise to clear up their financial burden

Review: A dark comedy set amid a family, that too, within the four walls of the house is something we haven't witnessed quite often. Udanpaal not only experiments with the same, but also comes out remarkably successful in the attempt. Kudos to debutant Karthik Sreenivasan's nuanced storytelling. The film is a perfect example to show that one doesn't need an elaborate set-up for a story - a good plot and interesting characters can pretty much do the trick.

Parama (Linga) is neck deep in debt as his CD shop business continues to take a hit as people move over to seeking content from the comfort of their phones. When his mother's fifth death anniversary arrives, he and his wife Prema (Abarnathi) invite his sister Kanmani (Gayathrie Shankar) and her husband Murali (Vivek Prasanna) home. Kanmani's family, too, is not financially well off and so is the youngest sibling Parthi (KPY Dheena), who runs a biriyani shop.

During the rituals, the siblings broach the subject of selling the house they are residing in, to their father Vinayagam (Charle). Vinayagam disapproves of the plan and later decides to pay a visit to a complex that he frequents on a regular basis. It's here that their destiny changes forever. The building collapses and the TV channels flash the news that the families of the fatal victims would be paid Rs 20 lakh as compensation. What follows is a rollercoaster ride as the siblings and their spouses draw a scheme to get hold of the lump sum.

The interesting part about Udanpaal is that every character in the film is completely flawed and they make no bones about the fact that their lives and themselves are a complete mess. In fact, when Parama looks at his sister Kanmani hoping that she might regret making the ruse to salvage their financial situation, she surprisingly takes the plunge immediately. It's funny how one incident segues into another effortlessly and the characters are always in for an unwelcome but hilarious surprise. It's not easy bringing out the laughs amid grim scenes after a crucial character passes away, but Udanpaal does so, and doesn't make it overwhelming at any given point of time. The actors have the audience eating out of their hands with their effortless acting, be it Charle, Linga, Gayathrie Shankar, Vivek Prasanna or Abarnathi. Gayathrie Shankar and Vivek Prasanna deserve a special mention for spicing up the scenes with their ideas and gestures.

Having said that the film is not all comedy and it also takes up the serious case of degenerating relationships in families where a parental figure ends up being used as a pawn and is eventually looked at only as a source of money.

Shakthi Balaji's music and Madan Christopher's cinematography have done a neat job of setting up the tone of the story in the limited space. The only glitch in this side-splitting droll is that Udanpaal begins to lag in the second half and some portions get so unnecessarily stretched that they tend to become repetitive after a point of time. Also, the film ends in a pretty abrupt manner, that too when you are least expecting it. Had the film been edited better and the screenplay made tighter, this would have made for a perfect weekend binge watch. It's rest assures that if this film had been released in theatres, it would have had the entire movie hall bursting into laughter.

Verdict: A frolicking comedy that makes for a perfect weekend watch

Udanpaal, On Aha, Holds A Dark Yet Funny Mirror To Our Money-Obsessed Society

How far will you go for money? This is the question that writer-director Karthik Seenivasan asks the Vinayagam family and its viewers. Even if the answer might take on an existential tone for many of us, the fraying family strapped for cash in Udanpaal has an answer readily on them. They will pry, push and sometimes claw their way to a shot at money, even if it means their morality is on the line. 

Like most gritty independent films we see today, Udanpaal too chooses to place its focus on a delightfully dysfunctional family— and an equally dilapidated house that they call home. The matchbox house— which gets a gorgeous montage in the title credits— is as big a part of the Vinayagam family as its residents. And a testament to that is how the film plays out almost entirely in the house.

Udanpaal begins with Kanmani (Gayathrie) and her husband Murali landing up at her father’s house at an ungodly hour. Tension runs high as the joint family convenes for a mission. Kanmani might have come back home for her mother’s fifth death anniversary, but the real reason behind her arrival is something a tad more sinister. Kanmani and her brother Parama (Linga) want to grovel to their father (a refreshing VTM Charlie) to sell their house to make quick money. And obviously enough the father is enraged and a tussle for property begins. But before you assume that you are in for a Visu film (the sentimental director’s filmography gets a fun hat tip in the film), Karthik changes the film’s gears and makes you think of Homi Adajania’s Being Cyrus (2005) instead. He refrains from histrionics and splashes Udanpaal with some morbid comedy. What if a freak accident lets the siblings believe that they are entitled for some compensatory cash? 

Psychological and physical ruin are running themes in Udanpaal , a concept that Karthik expertly weaves into his writing. This is apparent right from the opening shot, where we see blue paint on the walls of the house peel into disintegration. The sofa is propped up by small stones and the chipped clock is filled in with chalk piece marks masquerading as numbers on the wall. And what’s more, Murali causes ruin of the only functioning furniture in the house – the cot. The physicality of the house is nothing but a reflection of the bonds that its residents share.

Parama, who runs a washed-up CD store once owned by his father, has now resorted to selling soft porn to the elderly in the neighbourhood. Kanmani, on the other hand is a makeup artist (ironically enough with Gayathrie’s past with makeup) who needs some fast cash. And Prema, the matriarch of the house and Parama’s partner, is left with the responsibility of caring for the father-in-law and his ailing sister with dementia. All love is lost between the bitter Vinayagams, except for the bond that Parama’s son shares with his grandpa. 

Madhan Christopher’s camera flails beautifully in and out of the house’s ruins, pulling us into the world as a fly on the wall. Udanpaal is rich with symbolisms. For one, it begins with a death and ends with one. Its mise-en-scene is spectacular — be it the recurrent imagery of a tea glass or a kid’s artwork, every article in Udanpaal has its place. 

The film is bookmarked with some great performances too. Prema and Kanmani never have a nice thing to say about each other, but the actresses playing them (Abarnathi and Gayathrie) riff off each other with zing. Kaithi actor Dheena too plays a memorable cameo as a biryani master (the irony is not lost on us here as well). While the film is at its best when it satirises family greed, it struggles to do the same with its emotional scenes. Since we don’t get to travel long enough with its characters, we hardly relate to their misty-eyed moments. When Charlie shocks the family with an appearance at one point, Gayathrie says, “Ennaku azhardha sirikardhane theiyale/ I don’t know if I should cry or laugh.” This perhaps seems to be the problem that the film’s writing wrestles with in the end. We would have liked the film to stick with the laughs.

Director Karthik Sreenivasan presents us a dark comedy that revolves around a family that is fraught with financial issues. We meet Vinayakam (Charle) and his children - sons Parama (Linga), Parthi (KPY Dheena) and daughter Kanmani (Gayathrie Shankar). The story is about a family. How Vinayakam’s children try to force their father to sell the house and make money off him forms the rest of the story. Kanmani lands up at her father’s place, where Parama lives with his wife (Abarnathi), along with her husband Murali (Vivek Prasanna).

This movie is well-crafted and written by director Karthik Sreenivasan. He used a few characters to weave a story that is funny and keeps you engaged throughout. All the actors are natural and played their roles with ease. While you have a hearty laugh, there is also a more serious issue that is examined - how children who are struggling with debts use their elderly parents for financial gain.This is a reality, unfortunately, in our society. Karthik has taken this issue and created a story in a manner that resonates with the audience without being preachy.This would definitely strike a chord with the audience of this film.

Karthik has etched each of the characters in detail. Though having shot the entire movie inside a house, he was able to make each one of them stand out. This is not a simple feat to achieve. The cinematographer, Madhan Christopher, must be appreciated for his camera work. He shot the film effectively in the small space given. The background music composed by Shakti Balaji is apt for the film.

Watch the movie with your family this weekend and you’re guaranteed a lot of laughs.

ஓடிடியில் வெளியாகும் திரைப்படங்களுக்கு சில சூட்சுமங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. அதைக் கச்சிதமாகத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு அதன் வடிவமைப்பில் உருவாகி ஓடிடியில் வெளியாகியிருக்கும் படம் இது.

ஒவ்வொரு மனிதனுக்குள்ளும் இருக்கும் மிருகம் எப்போது முழிக்கும் என்பது தெரியாது என்பார்களே..?! அப்பேர்பட்ட மிருகம் எழுந்து ரவுண்டு கட்டி விளையாடினால் ஒரு குடும்பம் என்னவாகும் என்பதை இந்த 2 மணி நேர திரைப்படம் நமக்குக் காட்டுகிறது.

குடும்பத் தலைவரான சார்லி, சென்னையில் ஒரு ஒதுக்குப்புறமான பகுதியில் பழைய வீட்டில் வசிக்கிறார். உடன் இவரது மூத்த மகனான லிங்கா தனது மனைவி, மகனுடன் இருக்கிறார். கடைசி மகன் வெளியில் தங்கிக் கொள்கிறார். ஒரே மகளான காயத்ரியும் திருமணமாகி வெளியூரில் வசிக்கிறார்.

லிங்கா வீடியோ சிடி விற்பனை கடை வைத்திருக்கிறார். பிஸினஸ் ஊத்திக் கொண்டதால் வேறு தொழில் செய்ய நினைக்கிறார். ஏற்கெனவே ஊர் முழுவதும் கடன் வாங்கி வைத்திருக்கிறார் லிங்கா. வீட்டுக்கான மின் கட்டணம் கட்டக்கூட காசில்லாமல் இருக்கிறார்.

இதனால் தற்போது தான் குடியிருக்கும் இந்தப் பாழடைந்த வீட்டை விற்றுவிட்டு அதில் தனக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பங்கில் ஏதாவது தொழில் செய்து பிழைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என்று நினைக்கிறார் லிங்கா. இதற்காக வீட்டு உரிமையாளரான தன் அப்பாவிடம் தன் சார்பில் பேசுவதற்காக தங்கையை வரவழைக்கிறார்.

அம்மாவின் திதி நாளான அன்றைக்கு தங்கையும், தனது கணவர், பிள்ளையுடன் வந்துவிட.. பேச்சுவார்த்தை துவங்குகிறது. அப்பாவான சார்லி வீ்ட்டை விற்க முடியாது என்கிறார். இது தொடர்பாக அப்பாவுக்கும், மகனுக்கும் இடையில் சண்டை மூண்டு அது முடிவுறாத தர்க்கத்தில் முடிகிறது.

“வெளியே போய்விட்டு வருகிறேன்” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு சார்லி வெளியேற.. சிறிது நேரம் கழித்து அவர் “போய்விட்டு வருகிறேன்” என்று சொன்ன அந்த பில்டிங் இடிந்து விழுந்துவிட்டதாக, தொலைக்காட்சிகளில் பிரேக்கிங் நியூஸ் ஓடுகிறது.

குடும்பமே பதறுகிறது. லிங்கா பதட்டத்துடன் அப்பாவை தேடிப் பார்க்க கிளம்பும் வேளையில், விபத்தில் இறந்தவர்களுக்கு மாநில அரசு இழப்பீட்டுத் தொகையாக 20 லட்சம் ரூபாய் கொடுப்பதாக அறிவிப்பும் வெளியாக.. லிங்காவின் மனதில் இருக்கும் மிருகம் வெளியே வருகிறது.

அப்பாவைத் தேடுவதைவிடவும் கிடைக்கவிருக்கும் 20 லட்சம் ரூபாயில் என்னவெல்லாம் செய்யலாம் என்று பட்டியல் போடுகிறான். இந்த 20 லட்சம் ரூபாயில் தனக்கான பங்கு எவ்வளவு என்பதில் தங்கை காயத்ரியும் சேர்ந்து கொண்டு பல்லாங்குழி ஆடுகிறாள்.

ஆனாலும் இவர்களின் இத்திட்டம் அல்பாயுசில் கரைகிறது. சில நிமிட இடைவெளியில் அப்பா நிஜமாகவே வீட்டு வாசலில் வந்து நிற்க.. குடும்பமே பேயறைந்தது போலாகிறது.

20 லட்சம் போச்சே என்ற கவலையில் லிங்கா இருக்க.. அடுத்தக் கட்ட பிரச்சினையாக என்ன செய்யலாம் என்று யோசிக்கும் நேரத்தில் வீட்டிலேயே சார்லி நிஜமாகவே இறந்து போகிறார். இப்போது அடுத்தக் கட்ட நகர்வை யோசிக்கும் நேரத்தில் லிங்காவுக்குள் இருக்கும் மிருகக் குணம் தீவிரமாய் செயல்படுகிறது.

சார்லியின் பிணத்தை அந்த பில்டிங்கிற்குள் கொண்டு போய்வைத்துவிட்டு அரசிடம் நஷ்ட ஈடு கேட்டுப் பெறலாம் என்று லிங்காவின் ஐடியாபடி மொத்தக் குடும்பமும் திட்டமிடுகிறது. இது எதையும் அறியாத அந்த வீட்டு வாரிசுகள் இருவரும் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருக்க..

இவர்களது திட்டம் பலித்ததா..? நினைத்ததை செய்தார்களா..? அரசின் இழப்பீட்டுத் தொகை கிடைத்ததா…? இல்லையா..? என்பதுதான் இந்த ‘உடன்பால்’ படத்தின் சுவையான நகைச்சுவை அவலம் கலந்த திரைக்கதை.

சார்லி தனது நடிப்பின் உச்சத்தை இந்தப் படத்தில் தொட்டிருக்கிறார். வீட்டை விற்க முடியாது என்ற மறுப்பைக்கூட உரிமையோடு, பாசத்தோடு மறுக்கும் அந்தப் பாங்கு யாருக்கும் வராதுதான். மகனுடனான வாக்குவாதத்தில்கூட அன்போடு, பாசத்தோடு மறுதலித்துவிட்டுப் போகும்போது நமது அப்பாவை பார்ப்பதுபோலவே இருக்கிறது.

பேரன், பேத்தியுடன் கொஞ்சுவதிலும், பேரனையை செல்லாமாக ‘தாத்தா’ என்று அழைப்பதிலும், தனது தாத்தா பாசத்தை நிறைவாகக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார் சார்லி.

‘ மகளிர் மட்டும்’ படத்தில் நாகேஷுக்கு கிடைத்த செத்த பிணம் கதாபாத்திரம் மிக நீண்ட இடைவெளைக்குப் பிறகு இந்தப் படத்தில் சார்லிக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார் என்று சொல்ல முடியவில்லை. செத்திருக்கிறார் என்றுதான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். அந்த அளவுக்குத் தத்ரூபமாக பிணமாகவே நடித்திருக்கிறார் சார்லி. அட்டகாசம் ஸார்..!

சார்லின் மூத்த மகனாக லிங்கா… தாங்க முடியாத குடும்பச் சுமைகளை சுமந்து கொண ்டு எப்போது, எப்படி, அதை இறக்கி வைப்பது என்பது புரியாமல் தவிக்கும் ஒரு கணவனாக, அப்பாவாக தனது நடிப்பில் குறையில்லாமல் நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

போதாக்குறைக்கு வீட்டுக்கு வந்திருக்கும் தங்கையும், மனைவியும் ஈகோவால் அடிக்கடி முட்டிக் கொண்டு திரிய.. அதையும் சமாளிக்கும் அந்த நடிப்பில் நமது பரிதாபத்தையும் பெறுகிறார் லிங்கா.

மைத்துனர் விவேக் பிரசன்னாவின் குசும்புத்தனமான செயல்களாலும், பேச்சுக்களாலும்கூட அடிபடும் லிங்கா மும்முனை தாக்குதலாக இவர்களை சமாளிக்கும்விதம் நமது கண்ணில் நீர் வரும் அளவுக்கான காமெடியைத் தந்திருக்கிறது.

இவரது மனைவியாக நடித்திருக்கும் அபர்நதி கழுத்தில் வெற்று தாலிக் கயிறுடன் படம் முழுவதும் வலம் வந்து தனது இயலாமையையும், நாத்தனாரின் குத்தல் பேச்சுக்குப் பதில் சொல்லும் அண்ணியாகவும், மாமனார் மீது பாசமுள்ள மருமகளாகவும் தனது நடிப்பைக் காண்பித்திருக்கிறார்.

சார்லியின் மகளாக நடித்திருக்கும் காயத்ரியிடம் இருந்து இப்படியொரு நடிப்பை எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. அதிலும் நகைச்சுவையான வசனங்களை பேசி நடித்திருக்கும் இவரது நடிப்பு அசத்தல்.

பெர்சண்டேஜ் பற்றி பேசும்போது கொஞ்சம், கொஞ்சமாக குறைத்துக் கொண்டே வந்து பேசும்போது முடியல.. சிரிப்புக்குக் கொஞ்சம் ரெஸ்ட் கொடுங்கம்மா என்று நாமளே கேட்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. தன்னுடைய பங்கு சரியா தனக்கு வந்திரணும் என்று நினைத்து இவர் நடத்தும் காமெடி நாடகமெல்லாம் தனிக் கதை.

காயத்ரியின் கணவனாக நடித்திருக்கும் விவேக் பிரசன்னா படத்துக்குப் படம் தனது திறமையில் உயர்ந்து கொண்டே போகிறார். இப்போதுதான் ‘ வதந்தி’ வெப் சீரீஸில் அசத்தியவர், இதில் இன்னும் ஒருபடி மேலே போயிருக்கிறார்.

எதற்கும் பிரயோசனமில்லாத மாப்பிள்ளையாக இருக்கும் இவர் வீட்டில் செய்யும் ரகளையும், மைத்துனருக்குக் கொடுக்கும் குடைச்சலும்.. அவ்வப்போது அடிக்கும் டைமிங்கான விட்டுகளும்தான் படத்தின் மிகப் பெரிய எண்ட்டெர்டெயின்மெண்ட்.

லிங்காவின் அத்தையாக நடித்திருக்கும் தனம் இன்னொரு பக்கம் தனது சுவையான கேரக்டர் ஸ்கெட்ச்சில் ரசிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார்.

மதன் கிறிஸ்டோபரின் ஒளிப்பதிவு படத்திற்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள மிகப் பெரிய பலம். மொத்தக் கதையும் ஒரே வீட்டுக்குள் என்றாலும், காட்சி கோணங்களை மாற்றி, மாற்றி வைத்து நமக்குப் போரடிக்காத அளவுக்குப் படமாக்கியிருக்கிறார்.

சக்தி பாலாஜியின் பின்னணி இசை திரைக்கதைக்குப் பொருத்தமாக இருக்கிறது. ஏற்கெனவே திரைக்கதையே நகைச்சுவையாக இருக்க, பின்னணி இசையிலும் காமெடி டிராக்குகளை போட்டு நம்மை நைச்சியமாகத் தூண்டிவிட்டிருக்கிறார்.

ஒரு லோ மிடில் கிளாஸ் வாழ்க்கையை அப்படியே நம் கண் முன்னே கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.  படத்தின் 95 சதவிகிதமும் அந்த ஒரே வீட்டிற்குள்தான் நிகழ்கிறது. ஆனால் மிகவும் பரபரப்பாக பறக்கிறது. திரைக்கதையின் ஓட்டம் எங்கேயும் நிற்கவில்லை. அதிலும் இடைவேளை பிளாக்கில் அப்படியொரு கை தட்டலுடன் கூடிய ரசிப்பினை வரவழைத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர்.

நடிகர், நடிகைகள் அத்தனை பேரும் அதிகப்பட்சம் ஒரேயொரு காஸ்ட்யூமில்தான் தென்படுகிறார்கள். அந்தக் குறைபாடுகூட நமக்குத் தோன்றாத அளவுக்குத் திரைக்கதை நம்மை கட்டிப் போட்டிருக்கிறது. கிளைமாக்ஸில் அவ்வளவு நேரம் நாம் சிரித்த சிரிப்பையெல்லாம் மறக்கடித்து நம்மை ஸ்தம்பிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர்.

“நீ உன் அப்பாவை பார்த்துக்கிட்ட மாதிரிதான் நானும் உன்னை பார்த்துப்பேன்” என்று லிங்காவின் மகன் லிங்காவிடம் சொல்வதும், கிளைமாக்ஸில் தனது தாத்தாவுக்கு என்ன நடந்தது என்பதை யூகித்து தனது அப்பாவை வெறுப்பாகப் பார்க்கும் அந்த சிறுவனின் ரியாக்சன்தான் லிங்காவின் மிருகக் குணத்தை அடக்கியிருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கிறோம்..!

இந்தப் படம் தியேட்டருக்கு வந்திருந்தால் நிச்சயமாக பெரும் வெற்றியைப் பெற்றிருக்கும். துரதிருஷ்டம் என்பது நல்ல படங்களுக்கும் சில நேரங்களில் அமைந்துவிடும். இந்தப் படமும் அப்படியாகிவிட்டது..!

தந்தையின் மரணத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தி, குடும்பத்தின் பொருளாதாரத்தைச் சரி செய்ய முயலும் பிள்ளைகளின் கதையை அவல நகைச்சுவையாகச் சொல்லியிருக்கும் படமே இந்த ‘உடன்பால்.'

கடன் பிரச்னையில் சிக்கித் தவிக்கும் மகன், தன் கணவர் சொந்தத் தொழில் தொடங்க பணம் எதிர்பார்க்கும் மகள் என இருவரும் தங்கள் அப்பாவான சார்லியிடம் வீட்டை விற்றுப் பணம் தரச் சொல்கிறார்கள். அந்த யோசனையை விடாப்பிடியாக நிராகரிக்கிறார் சார்லி. அதன் பின்னர் எதிர்பாராவிதமாக அவர் இறந்துவிட, வீட்டின் பத்திரத்தில் சிக்கல் இருப்பதால் அதை விற்கவே முடியாது என்பது தெரியவருகிறது. உடனே பணம் சம்பாதிப்பதற்காகக் குரூரமாக யோசிக்கும் பிள்ளைகள், அப்பாவின் பிணத்தை வைத்து என்னவெல்லாம் செய்கிறார்கள் என்பதைக் கலகலப்பான காட்சிகளால் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

A Chaotic Dramedy film about human emotions like greed, morality & familial love that was excellently done with the help of minimal characters and for most of the duration in a single location. It's not easy to engage the viewers with this minimalistic approach, but director Karthik Seenivasan seems to have done a good job in bringing out the best of an interesting oneline with a pinch of hard hitting sadness at the end.

This film reminded me of all the chaotic comedies by Crazy Mohan, He might have enjoyed this film. Definitely one of my favourite tamil films of 2022.

Udanpaal starts with mundane scenes depicting the livelihood of a lower-middle-class family unable to meet the ends. It gave me a strange sense that I didn't feel this to be a chamber drama till a certain point that it is mostly. Instead, I participated in the chaos and entered into the mind space of the characters. I didn't bother about the indoors for a long time.

Intrigued by the trailer cut, I decided to give this a watch. With a good premise at heart and decent performances (except charle, nakkalites dhanam and vivek prasanna - who are perfect) - udanpaal takes its sweet time, almost an hour, to set up its premise. In the remaining 1 hour, it gets a little interesting, then the momentum severely drops, and again picks up in the last 15 mins. Despite such an unevenly paced and poorly written screenplay, the film somehow manages to deliver the emotional punch it wants to.

Thanks to the thoughtful nuances and every effort to make the story free of logical loopholes. The decision to go with no songs works positively for this movie. (dark)…

ஆஹா தமிழில், டிசம்பர் 30 அன்று வெளியாகிறது இத்திரைப்படம்.

பரமனுக்குக் கடன் அதிகமாகிவிட, வீட்டை விற்று அதிலிருந்து மீளலாமெனத் திட்டமிடுகிறான். அதற்காகத் தங்கை கண்மணியை வீட்டிற்கு வரவைத்து, அம்மாவின் 5 ஆம் ஆண்டு நினைவு நாளன்று அப்பாவிடம் பேச நினைக்கிறார். வீட்டை விற்க ஒத்துக் கொள்ளாத விநாயகம், வள்ளலார் காம்ப்ளக்ஸ்க்குச் சென்றுவிடுகிறார். அந்த காம்ப்ளெக்ஸ் இடிந்து விழ, அரசாங்கம் அந்த காம்ப்ளக்ஸ் விபத்தில் இறந்தவர்களுக்குத் தலா 20 லட்சம் ரூபாயை நிவாரணமாக அறிவிக்கிறது. தேவை, பணம், குடும்பம், சகோதர – சகோதரி பந்தம், குயுக்தி, கடன் சிக்கல் என மனித மனங்களை ஆக்கிரமிக்கும் உணர்வுகளைக் கலகலப்பாகத் தொட்டுச் செல்கிறது படம்.

இந்தப் படத்தின் கதையை, விநாயகத்தின் குடும்பக்கதை என இரண்டு வார்த்தையில் சொல்லலாம். விநாயகமாக சார்லி நடித்துள்ளார். அவரது அனுபவத்திற்கு அசால்ட்டாய் ஸ்கோர் செய்யக்கூடிய பாத்திரத்தில் நேர்த்தியாக நடித்துள்ளார். பேரன் மீது பாசத்தைக் கொட்டும் தாத்தாவாகவும், வெடித்துக் கோபமுறும் மகனிடம் பொறுமையாகப் பேசும் தந்தையாகவும் மனதில் பதிகிறார்.

வழக்கம் போல், கலகலப்பிற்கு உதவும் பாத்திரத்தில் அசத்தியுள்ளார் விவேக் பிரசன்னா. சீரியசான நேரத்திலும் மிக்ச்சர் சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் முரளி எனும் பாத்திரத்திற்கு அநாயாசமாகப் பொருந்திப் போகிறார். கதையின் ஓட்டத்திலேயே ஒரு டார்க் ஹ்யூமர் இருந்தாலும், தனது நடிப்பால் தானேற்கும் பாத்திற்குக் கூடுதல் மெருகேற்றுவதில் வல்லவரான விவேக் பிரசன்னா, இப்படத்திலும் நகைச்சுவையில் அதைச் செய்து காட்டியுள்ளார்.

பரமனின் மனைவி ப்ரேமாவாக அபர்ணதி நடித்துள்ளார். கணவனின் தங்கை முகத்தைத் தூக்கி வைத்துக் கொண்டதற்காக, கணவனிடம் அந்தக் கோபத்தைக் காட்டுவது, வீட்டு வேலைகள் அனைத்தையும் செய்வதென டிப்பிக்கல் மனைவியாகக் கச்சிதமாக நடித்துள்ளார். தன்னை யாரோ பின்தொடர்கிறார்கள் என கற்பித்துக் கொண்டும் கோபப்படும் விசாலம் கதாபாத்திரத்தில், நக்கலைட்ஸ் தனம் நடித்துள்ளார். வேகமாக வளரும் இந்தியாவை அச்சுறுத்தும் நோய்களில் ஒன்றான அல்சீமர்ஸ் நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவராக வருகிறார் விசாலம். மறதியை நகைச்சுவைக்காகப் பயன்படுத்தியிருந்தாலும், அவர்களைத் தொடர்ந்து கவனிக்கும் பொறுப்பின் சுமையை உணர்ந்து, 20 லட்சத்தில் பங்கு பிரிக்கும்போது அதை ஒரு காரணியாகக் கவனத்தில் கொள்வது நோயின் தீவிரத்தை உணர்த்தும் நிதர்சனம்.

விநாயகத்தின் இளைய மகன் பார்த்தியாக விஜய் டிவியின் தீனா நடித்துள்ளார். கைதி படத்தின் தொடர்ச்சியாக, விநாயகம் பிரியாணி எனும் கடையை நடத்துபவராக வருகிறார். இரண்டாம் பாதியில்தான் தோன்றுகிறார். ஆனால் அவரை விடவும் அவரது பிரியாணி அண்டா, படத்தின் ஓட்டத்தில் மிக முக்கியமான பங்காற்றியுள்ளது.

விநாயகத்தின் மூத்த மகன் பரமனாக லிங்கா நடித்துள்ளார். அவரை அழுத்தும் கடன் சுமையை மிக லாகவமாகத் தன் உடற்மொழியில் கொண்டு வந்துள்ளார். அன்பான தந்தையாக, பொறுப்பான கணவனாக, தங்கை கண்மணியுடனான அவருக்குள்ள பந்தம் என மிக எதார்த்தமான நடிப்பை வழங்கியுள்ளார். லிங்காவின் கேரியரில், இது அவருக்கு மிக முக்கியமான படமாக அமையும்.

விநாயகத்தின் மகள் கண்மணியாக காயத்ரி நடித்துள்ளார். பணத்திற்காகத் திட்டம் போட்டுவிட்டு, பார்த்தியைப் பார்த்ததும், அவர் அடிக்கும் அந்தர்பல்டிதான் அவரது கதாபத்திரத்தின் அல்டிமேட் குணாம்சம். கழுவும் நீரில் நழுவும் மீனாக, நேரத்திற்கு ஏற்றாற்போல் மாறும் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் காயத்ரி ரசிக்கவைக்கிறார்.

நகைச்சுவையாகச் செல்லும் படம், மிகக் கனமாக முடிகிறது. கிடைக்கும் சந்தர்ப்பத்தைச் சரியாகப் பயன்படுத்துபவர்களை வெற்றியாளர்கள் என்கின்றோம். ஆனால் எளியவர்கள் அப்படித் தங்கள் சிக்கலில் இருந்து மீள சந்தர்ப்பத்தைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்வதை மட்டும் எள்ளலுடன் பார்க்கும் பொதுச் சமூகத்தின் பிரதிபலிப்பே இந்தப் படத்தின் வெற்றிக்குக் காரணமாக அமையப் போகிறது. இயக்குநர் கார்த்திக் சீனிவாசனும், தார்மீக அடிப்படையில், பரமனைக் குற்றவாளிக் கூண்டில் நிற்கவைத்து விடுகிறார். தாத்தாவைப் பார்த்த தனது மகனின் மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு முன் எதுவும் பெரியதில்லை என நினைக்கும் பரமனிற்குக் கார்த்திக் சீனிவாசன் அளித்துள்ள தண்டனை மிகப் பெரியது.
