PhD in Accounting
Antonios’ PhD research examines the impact of labor unionization on monitoring costs, voluntary disclosure, and corporate finance. Using a novel firm-level collective bargaining dataset (programmatically extracted from companies’ filings), Antonios attempt to portray the impact of labor unionization on corporate matters.
First, his research suggests that audit fees become significantly higher at firms with organized labor, attributable to the more complex structures of unionized firms that increase both the risk and the magnitude of audit fees. The magnitude of labor unionization on audit fees increases (reduces) when the political ideology is supportive of labor unions (employees participate in the ownership of the firm).
Second, his investigation indicates that firms are more likely to adopt CSR reporting strategies as a response to labor unionization. Overall, the effect of union influence on CSR reporting is prominent in areas with incremental union power, attributable to political ideology, the legal environment, and corporate spatial clustering.
Finally, Antonios finds that a unionized firm’s decision to go public (through an Initial Public Offering – IPO) is associated with less underpricing (less volatility in first day returns) and with downward offer price revisions. Overall, information asymmetries and salient agency costs discourage the participation of investors in an IPO and also compromise the demand investors have for an IPO.

She is an Academic Scholar of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Economics at the International Hellenic University since 2022. Email: [email protected],gr
Current research and other informationPeli’s PhD research exams a Hellenistic farmhouse, which have been uncovered in the village Dimitra of Grevena. The farmhouse of Agios Konstantinos is a large, rectangular residential complex, which served as a permanent establishment. The farmhouse was in use for the period from the late 3rd century BC to the early 1st century BC. It is classified according to its typology with the farmhouses of a rectangular plan and enclosed central courtyard. The architectural plan of the building follows the typical architectural plan of the Hellenistic houses. However, the farmhouse of Agios Konstantinos is quite different from most Hellenistic farmhouses in Macedonia, because of the luxurious wall decoration in some rooms, which were directly related to the process of the symposium. It seems that the building complex was a large and autonomous economic unit, the result of private initiative.
The study of the farmhouse of Agios Konstantinos has contributed to the reassessment of the view that the Hellenistic farmhouse and its role in the socio-economic life of the ancient polis are only inherently linked to agricultural activities, as it has been long argued. The present study also highlights the artisanal and social character that these building units could enjoy. The seemingly “isolated” farmhouse has proven, geographically and economically, not to be one such.
The results from the research into the farmhouse of Agios Konstantinos prove wrong the theories that considered the region of Grevena to be isolated and poor during in Hellenistic times. The occupation of the farmhouse and the good quality of the construction of the building indicate an owner of high social status. Two broader (and potential) conclusions can thus be drawn. Firstly, the inhabitants of the farmhouses in Macedonia could have led a luxurious life inside their farmhouses, similar to that of the inhabitants of the urban centers of Macedonia during the Hellenistic period. Secondly, in this particular region of west Macedonia there could have existed a social group that involved the national elite.

Long and short-term academic programs are available in Greece across many universities and educational centers. International students and researchers may apply to BA, MA, Ph.D., and postdoctoral research programs in Greece. Moreover, summer schools and conferences are other excellent academic activities that make Greece an attractive destination for scholars and scientists. Many programs also come with fully-funded scholarships and fellowships as well as travel grants and financial aid, thus every student, researcher, and professor can always find a suitable program in Greece and apply.
Greece is the cradle of civilization. It is a country with a vibrant history created by the heroes of antiquity, great commanders, scientists, and thinkers who made an invaluable contribution to world science and art. Centuries-old traditions and high culture are combined here with hospitality, rich nature, and an excellent climate. Greece has many important historical monuments and museums and impressive sights, islands, and beaches.
From ancient times, the country has been known for its high-quality education system. Higher education in Greece is provided by three educational institutions: universities, technological educational institutes, and academies. While studying there, you can develop your professional knowledge to help you in your future career. In addition, many courses are taught in English, which means that you will quickly adapt to life in Greece.
Greek universities have a long and rich history. The origin of the exact sciences, ancient architecture, philosophy, and many others belongs to the culture of Greece. Over the past few decades, universities in Greece have shown consistently high academic performance, which is confirmed by numerous rankings. The most popular educational institutions in Greece are public universities. They are the oldest educational institutions in the country, and therefore have great prestige and occupy high positions in international rankings. The higher education system of Greece is highly respected, ranking 41st in the world in the first edition of the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings.
The oldest university in Greece is the Kapodistrian National University of Athens (the University of Athens), founded in 1837 by King Otto of Greece. Now it is the second-largest institution of higher education in the country after the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the top university of Greece according to world rankings. The university is famous for its faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Sociology, and Foreign Languages. The Kapodistrian National University of Athens offers English-taught undergraduate program in Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece.
Here is the list of 10 top universities of Greece:
Greek universities are well known in Europe for their exclusive study programs developed by the Greek Ministry of Education to create the competent workforce needed to improve the country's economy. That is why many foreigners study the Greek language and go to Greece to get their higher education in medicine, engineering, computer technology, archeology, linguistics programs, and other subjects taught in Greek universities perfectly.
The admission procedure to Greek state universities is based on a school diploma, without passing entrance exams. Thus, the applicant does not have to waste time preparing, as the university sends a response about the admissions committee's decision to the applicant. International students will only need to pass a standard exam of Greek language knowledge.
In Greece, international students have the opportunity to get a higher education and a European diploma, practically free of charge or for a symbolic amount of money.
Students from the European Union or the European Economic Area do not pay tuition fees to pursue their Bachelor's degrees at public universities. If you are not an EU student, expect to pay between €1,500 and €2,000 per academic year for most of your Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Most of the Master's programs are also free, with some exceptions in such areas as medicine, business and others. It can cost up to €8,000 per year for both EU and non-EU citizens.
Meals at the University are provided to you free of charge or at a reduced rate (depending on the university). In case of availability, they also offer accommodation in a dormitory, free medical insurance, a special student card for all types of transport, etc. Most people can comfortably live in Greece, having a budget of 450-750 euros per month.
If you have not been provided with a dormitory, don’t despair! Renting a private apartment is an affordable option for most international students. Prices vary depending on the proximity to the city center, and you can always share an apartment with other students to cut your overall expenses.
As noted above, Greece has developed special courses for demanded professions, so finding a job will be much easier for you if you enrolled in one of them.
As everywhere in the world, nowadays due to the world’s digitalization, the most demanded professions in Greece are Software Developer and Engineer. Doctors and nurses are also much demanded, so Medical faculty graduates can be sure that they will find a job.
It should be noted that a student residence permit in Greece allows foreigners to work from the very first day, but only part-time during the studies and full-time in summer. Besides, a student residence permit allows being hired very quickly because he already has insurance.
However, after graduation, international students face the question of legal stay in the country. Unlike some other European countries, Greece does not give graduates a year to look for work, so students need to extend their residence permit long before graduation.
Studying in the homeland of Socrates has many advantages, ranging from getting good quality education to living in the beautiful Mediterranean climate zone. We hope this section of ARMACAD will help you find your vocation in one of the Greek universities.

Postgraduate programs summary table
In accordance with existing laws, higher education institutions (i.e. universities and technological education institutes) are responsible for the planning and organization of postgraduate studies in Greece and for granting Master’s Degrees. Universities have additional powers to grant PhD Degrees.
Postgraduate Programmes
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens offers a wide range of postgraduate studies programmes (departmental, interdepartmental, inter-institutional and interstate ones), covering a variety of scientific fields, thus enabling graduates, as well as graduates of other academic institutions, to promote science and to claim their place in the labour market.
Aiming at extroversion and the broadening of its prospective target groups, the University of Athens has also proceeded to the organization and operation of postgraduate programmes in languages other than the Greek language.
Postgraduate programmes are either funded through the current budget or offered on a tuition-fee basis. In order to ensure the proper operation and sustainability of its postgraduate programmes, UoA is also seeking alternative sources of funding, such as donations, grants, research programmes, etc. Furthermore, it promotes the implementation of a scholarship system based on economic and social criteria, as well as on students’ performance.
The Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens encourage innovation and research and offer graduates the possibility of preparing a doctoral thesis. For information on the terms and conditions for admission to a PhD program, visit the Departments' websites.
The Departments of NKUA offer the possibility of preparing a doctoral thesis with co-supervision in collaboration with other Departments of NKUA or another H.E.I. of the country or abroad and/or in collaboration with other research and technological bodies (research Institutes, Foundations, research centers).
In addition, the Departments of NKUA may conclude agreement with industry or business for the preparation of a doctoral thesis (industrial doctorate) which concerns the conduct of industrial or applied research with the aim of extracting research results for the production of innovative products or services.
Postdoctoral Research
The University of Athens fosters cooperation with scientists conducting postdoctoral research in areas falling within its various Departments’ research fields. From the University’s part, cooperation mainly refers to providing postdoctoral research supervision or counseling support by one or more members of the host Department’s Research and Teaching Staff, providing access to scientific material or equipment, or assigning specific research projects whether on a remuneration-appointment basis or not.

Stephen Instone (1954-2009) was educated at Balliol College Oxford, and then Bedford College, University of London, where he completed a PhD on Pindar supervised by Martin West. His research interests varied widely over Greek religion, athletics, Homer and Pindar. He was a member of the department of Greek and Latin at University College London. Some of his publications included Greek Personal Religion: a reader (Aris & Phillips: Oxford 2009), Pindar: Selected Odes, ed. (Warminster, 1996), Some Divine Interventions in the Iliad', Eranos 99 (2003), 103-113, Essays for Theo Zinn, co.ed. (Leominster, 2006), 'Humour in Virgil', in Essays for Theo Zinn, co.ed. (Leominster, 2006), 'Origins of the Olympics', in Pindar's Poetry, Patrons and Festivals, edd. Hornblower and Morgan (Oxford, 2006), Pindar: The Complete Odes, co-ed. (Oxford, 2007), and Darkness my Light: Enigmatic Ajax', in Studies in Ancient Greek Poetry Presented to M.L.West on his Seventieth Birthday, ed. P.Finglass (Oxford, 2007).
Stephen’s obituary in The Times Higher is accessible online. He was a much-loved colleague and teacher at UCL.
Professor Robert William (Bob) Sharples (28 May 1949 - 11 August 2010) was a British educator and authority on ancient Greek philosophy . He was a member of the department of Greek and Latin at University College London for over 30 years, and won international distinction for his work in ancient philosophy, especially physics (or "natural philosophy") and in the Peripatetic tradition after Aristotle . His pioneering interest in previously under-studied figures such as Alexander of Aphrodisias led the way in the field. He was involved in the Theophrastus project directed by William Fortenbaugh and in running the series of Keeling Lectures and Colloquia in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy.
Otto Skutsch (1906-1990) was an eminent Latinist and son of the classical scholar Franz Skutsch. Otto Skutsch has described himself as a 'specialist in the metre and language of Latin comedy, the fragments of early Latin epic, and the formal aspects of classical poetry'. Indeed he has published mainly on early Roman drama and epic as well as on metrical and linguistic questions. He is best known today for his edition of the fragments of the Annals of Ennius, Rome's first historical epic; this edition was published after many decades' work in 1985 and is still highly regarded. Otto Skutsch was born and educated in Germany, where he completed his PhD in Göttingen in 1932 (thesis published in 1934). Due to the difficult political landscape he left Germany for the British Isles around 1933. He worked at the University of St Andrews, Queen's University Belfast and the University of Manchester before coming to UCL as Professor of Latin in 1951, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. Even after his retirement he continued to be an active researcher and held Visiting Professorships in the US. He became a British citizen in 1946 and was elected an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy in 1987.

Thank you for supporting our graduate students.
By funding a graduate student through an assistantship or fellowship, you are making graduate education more accessible for your students. You are also taking on additional responsibilities as the hiring supervisor. The resources below will assist you in this role.
Some essentials:
Graduate Assistantship Catalog Policies Graduate assistantships are categorized as Graduate Teaching Assistantships, Graduate Research Assistantships, and Graduate Assistantships. Definitions of each appointment type and policies governing all assistantships are outlined in the University Catalog .
Graduate Assistantship Offer Letter Generator Graduate assistantship offers must be made using the standardized (although customizable) Offer Letter Generator . This resource is for faculty and other University staff directly authorized to make graduate assistantship offers.
Graduate Assistantship Personnel Action Summary Form After an assistantship offer is accepted, the hiring faculty member or department uses the Graduate Assistantship Personnel Action Summary Webform to initiate the formal appointment of a graduate student as a GTA, GRA, or GA. (It is used also to make a fellowship appointments.) PAFs are required every academic year and, if hiring for a different appointment term, each individual semester, summer session, and/or break period.
Graduate Research Assistantship Screening As part of our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of research integrity and security, UL Lafayette adheres to Louisiana Revised Statute 17:1826.3, which mandates additional screening for individuals being considered for GRA positions funded by a grant, gift, or contract. This screening is initiated when the hiring supervisor uses the Offer Letter Generator to indicate that they have identified a candidate for the GRA position. Upon submission, the GRA offer letter is placed on hold and the candidate receives an email congratulating them on being recommended for a GRA position and providing next steps. When HR provides approval of the screening, the GRA offer letter is sent to the candidate. Learn more about this screening from the Office of Human Resources at https://humanresources.louisiana.edu/employment-opportunities .

Main navigation, cfs associate professor awarded funding from the corridor early-stage innovation fund.
Matthew Foster is an associate professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies.
Matthew Foster, PhD , an associate professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS), has been awarded $25,000 from The Corridor Early-Stage Innovation Fund. Foster was selected by the Florida High Tech Corridor and USF Research and Innovation.
This project, "Equipping Bilingual Leaders for Special Education Related Careers," is also supported by CBCS faculty M. Adelaida Restrepo, PhD , and Maria Carlo, PhD , and the College of Education's Lisa Lopez, PhD. The goal of their project is to mitigate educational disparities exacerbated by immigration and poverty by developing a comprehensive training program for bilingual professionals.
Through their work, the team aims to attract and train multilingual leaders in evidence-based bilingual instruction, culturally appropriate special education practices, and family engagement through field-based experiential learning activities. USF bilingual undergraduate students will provide bilingual language intervention to emergent bilinguals in kindergarten and first grade at Redlands Christian Migrant Association. Additionally, a new iPad app that coaches’ parents to engage in dialogic reading with their children in their native language will be adapted for schools. This method facilitates transfer effects from Spanish to English language and literacy, while promoting biliteracy at home.
The team also hopes to see their project packaged and leveraged by other universities, practitioners, and community groups, extending their reach beyond the USF community.
If you are or know a strong bilingual USF undergraduate student who is interested in innovative research and bilingual instructional methods and would like to participate in this research, contact Matthew Foster .

Here’s to an excellent school year!
Since 2015, wisconsin has added over 15,000 new biohealth jobs, helping the industry workforce grow to more than 129,000.
For too long, the economic opportunity and growth of biotech has been clustered in a few cities on the coasts. That may be about to change. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration Tech Hub program recently announced that Wisconsin will receive a game-changing $49 million in federal funding to advance personalized medicine, enhance health care outcomes and drive economic development. The news validates the crucial groundwork laid by the medical technology and life sciences ecosystem in Wisconsin, and points to the potential impact that could follow for patients and health systems worldwide.
Since 2015, Wisconsin has added over 15,000 new biohealth jobs, helping the industry workforce grow to more than 129,000 here with an average per capita annual wage of nearly $100,000. As a result, Wisconsin has become a hotbed for innovators who want to improve the human condition by creating new ways to diagnose and treat disease, resulting in $1 billion in R&D spending in 2020 alone. The state has emerged at the forefront of innovation and growth in personalized medicine and health technology. It’s a successful template that could bring economic growth to regions beyond the elite handful of biotech hot spots currently dominating the market.
Related: Wisconsin's largest cities have synergies to make tech hub flourish with new partnership
Steady investment and growth over decades have led to a pivotal moment for Wisconsin that will help redefine our state’s impact on the world. Our respective institutions, UW–Madison and GE HealthCare, have played integral roles in this expansion and served as a model for how industry and academia can partner to create a thriving and sustainable model for innovation.
When we began working together 40 years ago, most academic-industry partnerships were negotiated on a project-by-project basis, something we still see today. Through a unique “umbrella” agreement that enabled input and feedback across multiple lines of research and varied clinical settings, our partnership has resulted in more than 80 funded research projects, 20 joint inventions, hundreds of peer-reviewed research papers, and a talent ecosystem that has led to over 250 UW–Madison alumni joining GE HealthCare and other companies, including many based in Wisconsin.
Our partnership has moved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology from dream to reality, helping to expand the capabilities and precision of how we visualize organs and other soft tissues to diagnose and treat patients. We have led the distribution of standardized, optimal protocols for computed tomography (CT) imaging to thousands of sites, helping those imaging teams to obtain consistent, quality images consistently.
Theranostics, a more recent innovation that combines diagnostics and treatment into one seamless step for patients with cancer and other diseases, and the use of artificial intelligence to make medical imaging faster and better are direct results of the work between UW–Madison and GE HealthCare. Our teams have collaborated to enable bench to bedside research, clinical care and training to come together seamlessly, yielding uniquely powerful collaborations.
Legacy in jeopardy: Harley-Davidson kicks American workers in the teeth by moving some production to Thailand
This is tech transfer at its best. Welcome to a living laboratory of R&D, where hypothesis generation and data collection are accelerated and combined with real-world workforce training to improve health.
Over time there has been a ripple effect that has triggered regional biohealth economic development, a beneficial byproduct that has been experienced statewide. Our collaboration has laid a foundation for the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub, a broad regional coalition of industry leaders, research institutions, and community organizations fostering economic growth. It has strengthened the biohealth industry, and improved health equity.
This work led to Wisconsin receiving a Phase 1 Regional Tech Hub designation from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration last fall which cleared the way for Wisconsin’s most recent accomplishment: the tech hub that will receive $49 million in federal investments to drive collaboration, matched by state funding of $7.5 million (with strong bipartisan support) and industry funding of $24 million, bringing the total funding and commitments to over $80 million. These investments will support transformative personalized medicine projects that will enable tailored medical care based on individual genetic codes, medical records and environments resulting in improved outcomes at lower cost.
Milwaukee's economic future: RNC bust shows that tourism and entertainment alone won't transform city's economy
We feel fortunate to have predecessors who saw the wisdom of creating deep connections that allowed industry scientists and engineers, faculty, and students to work “brain-to-brain" and elbow-to-elbow on cutting-edge clinical technology. From a partnership between UW–Madison and GE HealthCare decades ago, today we are now part of a regional tech hub, an ecosystem that is leading the evolution of healthcare. And whether due to Midwestern work ethic or a shared love for all things Wisconsin, our scientists and engineers have rolled-up their shirtsleeves to drive innovation for patients.
There’s a remarkable amount of synergy between UW–Madison and GE HealthCare that is now the norm across our Wisconsin tech hub. We share a belief in the power of creative thinking, hard work, and relentless pursuit of the common good to help humanity achieve its greatest potential. We have found strategies to cut red tape and collaborate across disciplines. We’ve found, again and again, ways to make progress. And it is making a difference for patients, for students, for workers, and not only for the people of Wisconsin but for patients around the world.
Jay Hill is the Vice President of Advanced Technologies at GE HealthCare , and Anjon Audhya is the Senior Associate Dean for Basic Research, Biotechnology and Graduate Studies at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dear Colleague:
Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the scientific and innovation skills of the Nation is a strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF and Center for Biomedical Engineering Technology Acceleration ( BETA ) housed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)- National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering ( NIBIB ) have entered into a partnership to support the training of graduate students to meet both the NSF's strategic workforce development objectives as well the NIBIB's mission to transform through engineering the understanding of disease and its prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment and NIBIB's support of the next generation of diverse, interdisciplinary researchers across the career continuum.
This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) describes this unique partnership with NIBIB/BETA and is aligned with and conforms with the NSF INTERN opportunity described in the Dear Colleague Letter: Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity . This DCL is referred to as the NSF - NIBIB/BETA INTERN DCL.
Recipients submitting an INTERN supplemental funding request are required to have a policy or code of conduct that addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, and sexual assault. For more information, read about NSF policies regarding harassment .
NSF will consider supplemental funding requests that enable a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI to request up to six months of additional support for a graduate student supported on an active NSF award with the following goals:
Recipients with awards that include funding for graduate students, including institutional Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards, are eligible to submit a supplemental funding request. The PI for an active GRFP fellowship (not the GRFP fellow) should contact GRFP ( [email protected] ) regarding specific requirements before submitting a supplemental funding request on behalf of a GRFP fellow.
To be supported through an INTERN supplement responding to this DCL, graduate students (including graduate research fellows) being considered must have completed at least one academic year in their graduate programs (master's or doctoral), be in good academic standing and demonstrate satisfactory progress towards their research.
PIs and co-PIs of NSF grants and the research advisor of the GRFP fellows are encouraged to contact Dr. Manu Platt ( [email protected] ) at NIBIB/BETA, to explore suitable opportunities for research traineeships at NIBIB/BETA in Bethesda, Maryland, for the graduate students who are supported on their NSF grants.
Information about requesting supplemental support is contained in the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide ( PAPPG ), Chapter VI.E.5. In addition to the PAPPG requirements for supplemental support, the following materials must be included.
The total amount of funding requested must not exceed $55,000 per student for one six-month period. NSF plans to fund about 5-10 supplements per fiscal year, depending on the availability of funds.
The supplement funding will provide up to six months of support for an internship. Note: only one supplemental funding request may be submitted for a given student. A PI or co-PI may submit no more than one request per year of their award if there are multiple graduate students supported by the award, with the exception that GRFP will consider requests for internships for more than one GRFP Fellow from a single GRFP award.
Supplemental funding requests may be submitted at any time.
Requests for supplemental funding must be submitted via Research.gov. A PI or Co-PI with an NSF award should contact the program director who manages the award prior to submission. GRFP INTERN supplement requests are submitted by the GRFP PI, not by the GRFP fellow or the fellow's research advisor. Requests for supplemental funding submitted in response to this DCL will be reviewed internally by NSF program directors. All supplements are subject to (a) the availability of funds and (b) merit review of the supplemental funding request.
Intellectual Property Rights: Internships under this DCL are considered equivalent to traineeships. The National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering claims no rights to any inventions or writings that might result from its traineeship awards. However, trainees should be aware that NSF, another Federal agency, or some private party may acquire such rights through other support for particular research. Also, trainees should note their obligation to include an Acknowledgment and Disclaimer in any publication.
