Yoga is the ancient way to attain physical, mental, and spiritual practice. Primarily originating in India, the word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit, meaning to unite. This unity signifies the ultimate union of the body with consciousness and thus attaining definitive peace.

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, on December 11 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 to be marked as the International Day of Yoga.

It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. This was looked up as a process and technique to interconnect the mind, body and soul together and take a step closer to enlightenment. As this practice gained popularity in the West, this started to be termed an exercise and relaxation method. This was also associated with the claims to alleviate any existing physical injuries and chronic pains.

The idea to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. It was during his UN General Assembly speech where the resolution was introduced by India's Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, to June 21 as International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.  

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a process in which man tries to bring his mind, body and soul together. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to meet or be united. Yoga originates from Indian culture. People have been practising Yoga since about 5000 years ago. Yoga does not have physical fitness primarily; in Yoga, people try to control their body and mind through mental focus and breathing methods.

If men teach Yoga, then they are called yogis, and if women teach, they are called yoginis. Yoga Sutra is a 2000-year-old book. This is the only book in which written evidence of Yoga has been found. This book is the oldest book about Yoga. Yogic philosophy is described in this book. A lot of methods have been conveyed about how someone can control their mind, their emotion, and merge into spirituality.

Yoga is divided into six branches, namely Hatha Yoga, Raja yoga, Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga, Jnana yoga, Tantra yoga. There are also seven chakras of yoga styles namely Sahasram chakra, Ajna chakra, Vishuddha chakra, Anahata chakra, Manipura chakra, Svadhishthana chakra, Muladhara chakra.

There are total 13 types of Yoga: Kundalini Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Yin Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Power Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Aerial Yoga, Acro Yoga.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is the only process in which you can exercise without any equipment. Not only that but in Yoga, you can drive away your diseases without any medicine.

With Yoga, you can increase the flexibility of your body. If there is flexibility in one's body, then the pain is much less in that body. Doing Yoga can relieve your pain.

If a person does Yoga for 20 to 30 minutes daily, then his body does not get tired throughout the day.

In his speech given in the UN, the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, gave the idea of making International Yoga important.

He said in his speech," Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

I have cried during Savasana more times than I can count. I have daydreamed. I have played out difficult conversations. I have had aha moments. I have been lulled by the stillness and quietness (and almost fallen asleep). And I have made promises to myself, some of which I have kept.

Have you ever experienced a similar nudge from your subconscious as you lie in stillness? A moment of clarity even though your eyes are closed? If so, how often have you acted on or responded to these inner knowings? Do you carry them with you after practice or do you forget them by the time you walk out the door? What if Savasana’s clarity didn’t end the second you rolled up your mat? What if you could extend it and expand upon it?

You can. By putting pen to paper after your practice through journal prompts.

Journaling After Yoga Can Extend Your Practice

The time after Savasana can be highly potent for self-reflection. The transition out of your final rest creates an opening for you to keep stretching your mind long after stretching your body.

I’ve found that journaling after yoga can feel like unburdening, like letting go of a weight  sitting heavy on your shoulders or uncoiling tightness in your chest. By expressing what you may have been holding in, it can  even make it a little easier to breathe.

Research seems to agree, indicating that both expressive writing and practicing Savasana can reduce stress and anxiety. Much like Savasana, journaling can help you relax and decode your emotions. By exploring the insights you experienced on the mat, you can further integrate your yoga practice into your everyday life.

Of course, Savasana doesn’t always result in an epiphany. Sometimes the pose simply offers the subtle sweetness of not moving. Sometimes it’s the only quiet moment in your day that allows you to both lose and find yourself. Even then, you can benefit from turning to a journal to explore what you need or, at the very least, savor a bit more quiet.

It can also be incredibly liberating to loosen the strings, the expectations, the worries, the thoughts, the what-ifs, and the related feelings you’ve been holding and cede them to a blank page. Journaling can feel like disconnecting from them and realizing they’re something you experience and not something you are.

When (And How) To Use Journal Prompts After Yoga

There is no “right way” to journal after yoga, just as there is no “right way” to practice a specific yoga pose. But there are a few methods I like to use that you can try too, depending on what’s accessible for you on that day and at that moment.

Journal on Your Commute

If you’re taking a train, bus, or Uber back to your home or office, consider bringing a journal with you to jot down your thoughts. If you’re walking, perhaps you find a park bench to sit on or slip inside a coffee shop. Headphones can block out noise or add a soothing backdrop. If you’re driving to your destination, see if you can lengthen your me-time by five to 10 minutes and sit in the driveway or parking lot.

Journal at Home

If you’re headed home after class and can snatch a few more moments of calm, do it. I especially love this method in the evenings, when there’s usually more grace to recreate the bliss of Savasana. Make yourself comfortable—blankets and pillows are highly encouraged. Put on mood lighting and mood music. Light a candle or some incense. Let your journaling environment feel as restorative as your Savasana.

Journal on the Go

If you’re strapped for time and just making it to class was a tight squeeze, rest easy. In the changing room or even on your way out the door, pull out your phone, go into your Notes, and jot a few things down. You can use a prompt (maybe save them in your Notes for easy access) or let whatever is slipping from your mind spill out in stream-of-consciousness fashion. Let these in-between moments, however few, be enough.

Attend a Yoga and Journaling Workshop

When I hold these events, I invite students to prolong the calm by turning to a blank page immediately following turning over from the fetal position. It may not be practical after your typical class, but it can help you formulate prompts that you can return to again and again.

Just as not all Savasanas look or feel the same, your post-Savasana journaling practice doesn’t have to look or feel the same each time, either. What is your physical self trying to tell you? What would you do the rest of the day or even tomorrow if you were to listen?

2. When You Had a Major Realization or Something Clicked

Where do you feel a sense of heaviness or frustration? What would lessen the strain? Write a permission slip to let it go. Sign and date it.

The word "osteoporosis" means "porous bone." Bones naturally have a sponge-like structure that allows them to absorb the pressure of everyday movement. When osteoporosis develops, the "holes" of the sponge become larger and greater in number, reducing overall bone mass.

This loss of bone mass weakens the bone. The loss of strength can go unnoticed until a fracture occurs. Fractures as a result of osteoporosis are usually in the hip, wrist, or spine.

An estimated 10.2 million older adults in the United States have osteoporosis, and an additional 43 million have low bone mass and are at risk of developing osteoporosis. People born with uteruses are four times more likely to be affected by this condition than people assigned male at birth.

Osteoporosis can be managed with measures such as medications, increased intake of bone-strengthening nutrients like calcium and vitamin D, and exercises that help build and maintain bone mass, like yoga.

Benefits of Yoga for Osteoporosis 

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical postures , breathwork, and meditation. The physical movement has been shown to have a variety of benefits for everyone, not just those with osteoporosis, such as:

  • Better posture
  • Improved balance and flexibility
  • Enhanced coordination
  • Greater range of motion
  • Increased muscle strength
  • More even gait
  • Increased bone density

These physical benefits are especially helpful for people with osteoporosis because improved coordination and balance can help prevent falling, which is the main cause of fractures in people with osteoporosis.

Yoga also uses weight-bearing movement—that is, moves that make your body work against gravity—which has been shown to encourage bone formation and increase bone strength. This can help keep osteoporosis from progressing.

A 2016 study examined the effectiveness of 12 specific yoga postures in raising bone mineral density (an indicator of bone mass). It showed that participants who did yoga every other day (or an average of three times a week) significantly improved bone mineral density in their spine, hips, and thigh bones.

While this study had limitations and drawbacks, the results are promising. Further research is needed to explore the effects of yoga on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in a more diverse group of participants.

Benefits for Postmenopausal Bone Loss

People born with uteruses are more likely to develop osteoporosis as they get older because the rate of bone breakdown increases after menopause . This is because estrogen is generally protective of bones, but menopause causes levels of this hormone to drop.

Yoga seems to be particularly effective at helping postmenopausal people improve and maintain bone density. In a small 2016 study, 30 women, ages 45 to 62, with postmenopausal osteoporosis did a one-hour yoga session four days a week for six months. At the end of the study, the participants' average T-scores (a measure of bone density) had significantly improved.

Additional studies have confirmed these results, but more research is needed to determine how yoga stimulates bone formation and how often the practice must be done to see improvements.

12 Yoga Poses for Bone Health 

Any yoga flow will help encourage bone formation. Aim to do at least two 30-minute sessions per week.

To get started, you may want to try the yoga routine created specifically for bone health for the 2016 study. Each of the 12 poses is to be held for 30 seconds, followed by a 30-second pause.

The poses described below are the classical pose format. When you begin yoga for the first time, make sure you do so under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Also, make any modifications as needed, such as those in Dr. Fishman's video.

For Hips and Legs

Vrksasana — Tree

  • Standing with feet hip-width apart, shift your weight into your right foot and lift your left foot off the floor.
  • Slowly bend your left knee and bring the sole of your left foot to rest inside your ankle, lower leg, or thigh. Avoid pressing your foot into your knee.
  • Raise your arms above your head or in front of your chest, palms together.
  • Focus your gaze on a fixed object to help you keep your balance.
  • Take 5 to 10 breaths, then lower your left foot and repeat on the other side.

Trikonasana — Triangle

  • Stand with legs spread wide. Keep your right foot facing forward and turn your left foot out about 45 degrees.
  • Bend at the hip toward your left foot and slide your left palm down to your left shin, the floor, or a block.
  • Extend your right arm up.

Virabhadrasana II — Warrior II

  • Stand in a wide stance on your mat with feet parallel, facing the left side of the room.
  • Keeping your torso aligned with your hips, turn your right foot toward the front of the mat and bend your right knee, aiming for 90 degrees.

  • Put your hands on your hips. Raise your left arm overhead.
  • Keeping your spine straight, turn your torso toward your front leg and hinge forward. As you twist, extend your right arm.

  • Lift your right hand toward the ceiling and look up.
  • Hold this position for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side, starting with the left foot forward.

Salabhasana — Locust

  • Lie down on your stomach with your forehead or chin to the mat. You can place a blanket under your hips for padding if you find this more comfortable.
  • Extend arms long by your side with palms facing the floor and stretch your legs out behind you.
  • Roll your shoulders back and inhale as you lift your head, chest, and arms up off the floor.
  • Firming your buttocks, lift your legs such that your feet and knees are off the floor. Your weight will be resting on your lower ribs, belly, and front pelvis.
  • Make sure your neck stays in a neutral position by keeping your gaze on the floor just in front of you, not cranking up.
  • Hold for 3 to 5 breaths. Exhaling, lower down to the floor, turning your head to one side and resting on your cheek. Repeat 1 to 2 times.

Marichyasana III — Straight-Legged Twist

  • Sit on the floor with legs extended out in front of you.
  • Bend your left knee and cross your left leg across the right. Place the sole of your left foot on the floor against the right leg, as close to the groin as possible.
  • Rotate your torso to the left. Hook your right arm on the outside of your left thigh, and rest your left hand behind you.
  • As you exhale, use your right arm to twist further (only twisting as far as is comfortable), looking over your left shoulder.
  • Hold for several breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Matsyendrasana — Bent-Knee Twist

  • Sit on the floor and bend your left leg in, letting the foot rest near the groin.
  • Bend your right knee and cross your right foot over your left thigh, stepping your right foot on the floor to the outside of your left leg.
  • As you exhale, turn toward the right and hook your left elbow to the outside of your right knee.
  • Rest your right hand behind you. Use your right arm to deepen the twist, if desired.
  • Hold for 10 breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Savasana — Corpse Pose

  • Lie down on your back with your arms and legs splayed open. Turn palms upward.
  • Once you are in position, relax your whole body, including your face. Don't try to hold your position; just let your body feel heavy.
  • Breathe naturally.
  • Stay in this position for as long as you are comfortable, 2 to 5 minutes.
  • To come out of this pose, begin by deepening your breath, then start to wiggle your fingers and toes to slowly reawaken your body.
  • Do a full-body stretch from hands to feet.
  • With your eyes closed, bring your knees into your chest and roll over to one side. Rest in the fetal position for a few breaths.
  • Return to a sitting position, using your hands for support.

The participants in one study on yoga's effects on osteoporosis were instructed to hold each of the 12 poses for 30 seconds, daily. Other studies indicate practicing a one-hour flow two to three times per week.

Which poses someone with osteoporosis should or should not do depends largely on the person, their experience level, their level of bone loss, and their general health. Anyone with osteoporosis should see their healthcare provider before beginning a program.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Simone Landis, a 29-year-old from San Francisco who quit her job at Meta. It's been edited for length and clarity.

My event-planning job at Meta was exciting and kept me on my toes, but when the pandemic shut down all in-person gatherings and my role was diminished to data analytics , I lost passion for the job. My dissatisfaction was tempered by the hefty paycheck and job security, but after two years I was desperately searching for more out of my career.

In the fall of 2022, I quit my job and booked a flight to Bali in pursuit of my very own "Eat, Pray, Love" experience. Yet I found myself feeling more lost and confused than ever, so I returned to the States and had to move back into my childhood home.

I have no regrets about spending $5,000 on a trip to Bali, but I wish I'd known I couldn't run away from my inner turmoil, no matter how far I went.

My events job at Meta was tough to transition online

I started working at Meta in the fall of 2019 within its global security department. My job was to plan everything from companywide holiday parties to small shareholder meetings, ensuring that the proper executive protection and medical personnel were present.

I had so much fun planning events out of the Bay Area headquarters and loved how dynamic and busy it kept me.

But when the pandemic hit, my main tasks pivoted to data analytics. Two years went by without the return of in-person events, and I lost my spark for work.

My job turned into something entirely different than what I signed up for, and I wasn't looking forward to my day-to-day tasks. I knew it was time to move on, but I was afraid to let go of a secure paycheck.

I started working a weekend gig at an event-planning agency to satisfy my event interest while I held on to my job at Meta. A few months later, my roommate in San Francisco decided to move out, and I was faced with a decision to either stay at Meta and find my own apartment or use this as my moment to move on.

I'd spent two years saving up money, including $5,000 exclusively for travel, so I knew I could financially sustain a few months away from work. I thought a vacation would clear my head and allow me to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life.

I chose to do a yoga retreat because I'd been practicing for years and wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people.

On the outside, Bali was exactly what I expected. My trip was filled with delicious vegan food, endless yoga classes, and cafés with digital nomads. The island is gorgeous, and I had ample time to explore the lush nature.

However, it was a lot more commercialized than I expected. Most of my immediate surroundings were Westernized and catered exclusively to tourists and people like me who bought into the same Bali fantasy of a spiritual reset.

I felt more lost than ever

I went in with these grand plans of creating social-media travel content, meeting new friends, and figuring out next steps for my career.

But I found myself completely alone, overcome with social anxiety, and too overwhelmed to film anything. The pressure I put on myself to make something of this vacation sent me into decision paralysis.

I hoped to emerge from a  meditation  with a revelation about what I should do with my life, but I felt more lost than ever.

Rather than clearing my head, the time away made space for me to ruminate over the fact that I was 27, an age when it seemed like most of my friends were making their way up the corporate ladder, starting families, or settling down. I grappled with the fact that I didn't have any of the things I thought defined success at my age.

I moved back into my childhood home

After two months in Bali, I flew back to the Bay Area and had to move into my childhood home . My parents don't live there year-round, so I had the place largely to myself, but it felt weird to return.

It was humbling and frankly embarrassing to reflect on the fact that I had given up everything to travel and find myself but the only place I found myself was back in my childhood bedroom. It forced me to look inward and rediscover what the little girl who once lived here wanted. I could run away, I could travel again, but I knew I'd always have to come home to myself.

I continued working part time at the events company, and it reawakened my passion for events and in-person interactions. I stifled the social anxiety I struggled with in Bali and successfully advocated to my bosses for a promotion. Now I'm working more hours and taking on more responsibility and creative liberties.

I'm also planning on getting my yoga -teacher training and using my events background to lead international yoga retreats. Who knows, maybe I'll even return to Bali to lead a yoga retreat.

I'm still living in my childhood home, which I feel is common but not talked about enough. The Bay Area is expensive, and while it's not exactly what I imagined for myself at 29, I'm happy to be here during this stage of my life. I'm excited to one day have a place of my own, but I'm in no rush to leave until I feel financially secure.

I don't have any regrets

I wouldn't take back my experience in Bali for a second, but I wish I'd had more realistic expectations. I set myself up for disappointment by relying on my vacation as a crutch for my identity crisis. The reality is that I just needed time with myself, regardless of the place.

I am, however, happy that I trusted my intuition and left Meta. Though it's going to be a long journey, I'm finally on a career path that aligns with my passions and goals.

The ‘Orgasm Gap’ Isn’t Going Away for Straight Women

A new study suggests they still have fewer orgasms during sex than men do, even with age and experience.

Sex researchers and therapists have long known that women in heterosexual relationships tend to have fewer orgasms than men do. A large new study suggests that this “orgasm gap” persists — and does not improve with age.

The Numbers

The research, published recently in the journal Sexual Medicine, found that across all ages, men of all sexual orientations reported higher orgasm rates during sex — from 70 to 85 percent — compared with 46 to 58 percent for women. Lesbian and bisexual women between ages 35 and 49 reported higher orgasm rates than their heterosexual counterparts.

The analysis included data from eight Singles in America surveys, which are funded and conducted by Match.com annually in collaboration with The Kinsey Institute, the sexuality and relationships research program at Indiana University. The sample included more than 24,000 single Americans between the ages of 18 and 100.

Researchers were especially interested in the question of whether orgasm rates vary by age. Amanda Gesselman, a research scientist with the Kinsey Institute and lead author on the study, said she thought the team might find evidence that the orgasm gap narrows as women develop confidence and learn what they like (and, perhaps, their partners develop skills to help pleasure them).

However, while older gay and bisexual men and lesbian women did have higher orgasm rates, “we really didn’t see evidence of closing the orgasm gap overall,” she said, adding that she hopes future studies will explore the age-orgasm connection further.

“We really, as a society, sort of prioritize men’s pleasure and undervalue women’s sexual pleasure,” Dr. Gesselman said. “And I think that contributes to consistent disparities.”

The Limitations

Emily Nagoski, a sex educator and author of the book “Come Together” — who did not work on the new study — said a limitation of the study was that the survey asked: “When having sexual intercourse in general, what percentage of the time do you usually have an orgasm?” But it did not provide a more specific definition of what “sexual intercourse” means.

Research shows the majority of women require some form of clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. So if straight women defined “sexual intercourse” as vaginal penetration alone, it makes sense that there was a significant gap in orgasm rates, she said.

A more revealing question might be, “What percentage of the sex you have do you like?” Dr. Nagoski said. “Orgasm is not the measure of a sexual encounter. Pleasure is the measure of a sexual encounter.”
