Whether you are well into the school year or are enjoying a relaxed summertime schedule, reading logs are undoubtedly an excellent way for your child or student to keep track of their book-reading goals.

During the school year, children (in both elementary and middle school) are encouraged – or even required – to read as much as possible and are usually given a target number of minutes or pages to read every day. If you are an educator, homeschooler, or are a parent who simply wants their child to excel in reading, printing out a reading log for them to keep track of their minutes is the perfect way to ensure they are reading an appropriate minimum amount. Tracking progress also allows the child to see how well they are doing which will encourage them to read even more!

If the school year has ended and you’re already into summertime mode it doesn’t mean that reading is less important or unneeded – with all that extra time on their hands it is actually a perfect opportunity to have your child check out some books from the local library (more book trackers here!) and dive in! What is a reading log?

A reading log, also known as a reading journal, is a document used to keep track of your child’s or your student’s reading. It is essentially a place where a student can record all of the books they read.

The reading log can track a variety of things, such as the title of the book, the date the book was started, the number of pages read, and the time spent reading.

Reading logs are a great tool to promote reading as a consistent, daily habit for kids. They also give students a visual representation of their progress and help to encourage kids to read every day.

Make reading fun

In addition to this, you can also use reading journals as a classroom management tool. Students can receive stickers or stars if they read a certain number of pages per day, for example.
Developing a good reading habit at a young age can help to foster a love of reading in students. It encourages students to read outside of school, which is where reading can become a habit.
Using a reading log can then feel like a fun game or challenge for kids, in which they want to have a higher number of pages read each day or increase their minutes read. This encourages them to turn the page and keep reading even if they feel distracted. It can then stop kids from reaching for electronic devices instead.

Using a reading log template is a free and easy way to record data.

Kids should treat them like a reading journal, documenting their progress in a fun way.

All kids need to do to complete their reading journal is to follow these steps:

Choose a book that sounds fun and interesting.
Set aside dedicated reading time (even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes).
Read the book!
Write down the author’s name, the book title, and the amount of time spent reading or the number of pages read.
Record any extra information that is included in the reading log, such as writing a short chapter summary.
Have parents or guardians sign the reading log if necessary.

What should be included in a reading log?

There are many features you can include in a reading log.

Many printable reading logs and journal templates already come with a lot of these useful features, to help make reading as fun as possible for kids.

There are some aspects of a reading log that are necessary to track reading accurately and to support kids’ reading skills in the best way, such as including the date the book was started and finished, and the title of the book.

Consider the time frame of the reading log

Weekly or daily reading logs. If the reading journal is a weekly reading log or a daily reading log, then it is important to write down the number of pages read or minutes spent reading. This can give teachers a clearer insight into students’ progress.
Monthly reading logs. However, if the focus of the reading log is less on making reading a daily habit, but simply a more regular one, then you may choose not to include the minutes read or the number of pages This could be in the form of monthly reading logs instead. With this, you may opt for a simple date, title, and rating layout.

Essential things to include in a reading log

The book title and author of the book: Knowing the title can help teachers to assess whether the book is appropriate, as some books may be too challenging (or not challenging enough) and thus prevent a love of reading from growing.
Start and finish date: This is essential to help track how long it took the student to read the book in full, and encourages a weekly reading habit .
A rating or opinion: Kids should be encouraged to think critically about the fiction they are reading. You could include a star rating system in the reading log, or use facial expression emojis for students to circle depending on how much they enjoyed the book.

Fun things to include in a reading log

Minutes read or pages read: A fun way to encourage kids to love reading is by making it into a game or challenge. Setting a target, and documenting the minutes read not only helps teachers to track progress but will also give kids something to improve upon each time. Kids could also write down the page number they finished on, so they can continue reading where they left off.
A plot summary : Kids can write a short paragraph summary of the story of the book. This also highlights how much they absorbed the information in the book.
Favorite Scenes, characters, or quotes: Fiction books can be very engaging for kids, so let them share their thoughts in the reading log. Kids could also fill out the page numbers for their favorite scenes or quotes as a point of reference.
Genre: Encourage kids to learn about different books and genres by asking them to write down what genre they think the book fits into. At the end of the year, this can then be used to see what genres the kids preferred, which can then help you to decide which books to display in the classroom.
Strengths and weaknesses of the book: Kids could write down three positive and three negative things about the book. This promotes critical thinking skills and gives students a chance to share their honest opinions.

Reading logs can also be used seasonally in the classroom. Many teachers give kids a reading log during summer break to promote reading during this time. Alternatively, you might choose to use a winter reading log or have reading logs focused on different yearly holidays.

Kids must make time in their day to read so that they can write in their reading log. This focus on a structure can increase kids’ reading time, whilst giving them an opportunity to build self-discipline, which is an important skill for young learners to develop.

2. Students have autonomy over their own reading

Many of us will recall being ‘forced’ to read boring books in school. Reading logs help to eliminate this feeling of dread when having to pick up the school-assigned book. Reading logs should give students the freedom to choose whatever book they wish to read (as long as it is age-appropriate).

Teachers can encourage students to use their school library or local library to choose from a wide range of books, and to choose a book based on their own interests. There are so many fantastic children’s fiction books available, and a reading journal should be used in a way that gives students a chance to explore their local libraries and bookshops.

As a book lover, there is nothing more fun than wandering around a bookshop and choosing a new fiction book. Reading logs can be an opportunity to give students this wonderful experience for themselves.

3. A reading journal can help improve reading comprehension

Reading is a skill, and like all skills, they only improve with regular, consistent effort.

Writing in a reading log daily or weekly ensures that students are reading on a regular basis. This will undoubtedly help to improve reading comprehension, and allow students to understand the content of their chosen book more easily.

If you download a reading log or journal templates that include a section for a chapter or plot summary, or even a place for students to record their favorite characters or favorite scenes, this can definitely build reading comprehension ability.

With this, students have to remember key details from the book. It is a great way for teachers to track just how much students are absorbing from the book that they are reading.

Reading is an important part of learning for kids. I made a bunch of free printable cute reading logs for students to keep track of their daily, weekly, and monthly reading goals.

There are different designs that will be great for kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade and 6th grade.

FREE Printable Reading Logs ~ Full Sized or Adjustable for Your Bullet Journal

I am working on making my bullet journal a tad more organized this year. I mostly use it for “to-do” lists and other project list type items. It gets kind of messy and lacking in organization. One of the things I am adding this year are two different reading logs – a Books to Read and a Books I’ve Read. Since I couldn’t find FREE Printable Reading Logs that suited my needs, I decided to create some!

Anyone who knows me is well aware that I am not an artist. I say this because I see all these beautiful bullet journals with hand drawn details. This, I assure you, I cannot do. If I want something pretty in my bullet journal I will need to print it!

FREE Printable Reading Logs

This leads me to the FREE Printable Reading Logs I have created. As I scrolled through Pinterest looking at bullet journal ideas, I kept seeing these super cute drawings of books on shelves being used to track reading or books people wanted to read. This led me to searching for a free printable one because as I said, there is no way I will be able to draw one that I would be happy with! Much to my surprise I couldn’t find a free printable bookshelf to use for my reading logs…so I created my own!

Each of these printables are created large enough to print them on a full 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of printer paper for use with kids, or in a full sized notebook. With kids you can either have them color a book for each book they read, or print titles (or one word) on the spines for each book read.

They are also easily adaptable to include in your bullet journal. I printed mine as a 5 X 7 (on white card stock) to fit perfectly into my bullet journal. You can see what my printed and colored one looks like attached into my bullet journal below!

Some of my children struggled with reading. It was such a chore and something they dreaded each day. This is so difficult for a homeschooling mama to deal with, especially one who is an avid reader with a bookshelf in every room !

Help your young readers get into good reading habits by tracking what they are reading on their free time or in school. This is the perfect way to get through a book list you want them to read and to create a good reading habit.

What is a reading log?

A reading log is a printable document that can help your child keep track and log what they are reading. Many schools will send reading logs home to keep track of your reading during the summer months.

For a homeschooling family, a reading log is a valuable tool to encourage daily reading time, track reading progress and time spent reading. It is a great way to keep a record of the books that your children have read throughout the school year.

I always add our reading logs with our list of books to our end of the year homeschool portfolio .

How to Use Reading Logs

Each day that your child reads , have them track it on a daily reading log. When they begin to see how much they are reading they can set a reading goal and reading challenges for themselves. Then it becomes sort of a self competition.

Most children enjoy filling in their own personal chart because they can visually see the progress they are making. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and encourages them.

For a child that is struggling, we pick a reward and once they have filled in their log completely they will receive that reward. This is a fun way to encourage weekly reading.

You will be surprised at how quickly they begin to enjoy books when they have a goal they are working hard to achieve. They may even begin to find some of their favorite books and find their love of reading.

Homework Calendar

When I was a student, I personally loved using a homework calendar. It helped me see the bigger picture and take all of my obligations into account. You can use the homework calendar template as is or you can edit it to suit your needs. Add your list of assignments below. Add each assignment to the calendar on the due date. If you select the Excel version, then there is a dropdown list to select the subject, priority, and status. You can edit the list of subjects under the “subjects” tab. Each subject is automatically assigned a color code . All assignments that are due the next day are colored red. Assignments due that week are orange and those that are due that month are yellow.

This homework tracker can track your homework assignments, the subjects, due dates, and the status of each assignment. There is a dropdown list to select the subject and each subject will be marked with a different color. To change the list of subjects, go to the subject tab and list each subject. The priority can be either urgent, high, normal, or low. The status is either “to do” or “done”. You can change the priority or the status in the tabs.

Assignment Tracker

This Excel spreadsheet keeps track of assignments, who is responsible for each, and when each assignment is due. The color of each assignment changes according to the due date. When the assignment is due it will turn yellow. You can also open this spreadsheet on Google Sheets.

What is a homework planner?

This is a planner to track your homework and assignments to ensure that you prepare and submit everything on time. An assignment planner can keep track of all your assignments and is a great tool for priority management. However, if you have other obligations such as tests, social and family gatherings, etc, it might be better to prepare a planner that takes all your obligations into account. If you have a family gathering the day before a test, then you will know you will need to start studying one day earlier than you would have. If you don’t keep track of deadlines and everything you need to do, you might find yourself stressed or too late to get everything done. Planning will take the stress out of school and help you be more productive and organized.

How to use an assignment tracker?

Learning how to manage your time is an essential skill that will be needed later on in life as well. Time management is something that sets efficient people apart from those who do not manage their time well and get little done or even fall apart when stressed. Our job as parents is to give our children the skills and tools to manage their time well and get things done, even when they have a lot on their plate.

Start helping your kids to get organized when they are young. Help them write their assignments in their planner. Help them organize their time and schedule. The younger they are, the less they have on their plate. This is the time to help them acquire the skills they will need when they are older and obligations start to become more overwhelming. Remind your kids to review their planner regularly until it becomes a habit. By the time they are older, in high school or college, they will be able to manage their time efficiently.

It isn’t enough to write assignments and homework in a planner when you receive them. In order for a planner to be efficient, you will need to review it regularly. Start a daily habit where you check your homework calendar daily to see what needs to be done. This should be part of your child’s daily routine. If it isn’t feasible to check daily, then it should happen at least once or twice a week. If that doesn’t work, then try setting reminders on your phone.

How to make a homework planner?

Choose whether you want a weekly assignment planner or a daily or monthly planner. Whatever works for you. Scan the templates on this page and see which one you think will be the most helpful. If you like it as-is then download the PDF version. If you prefer to edit it to meet your specific needs then select the Microsoft Word version and edit as you please. Make it work for you.

Cute Monthly Reading Logs (Free Printables)

Whether the goal is to read for 15 minutes every day or complete a new book by a given time frame, a reading log is the perfect way to help your child keep track of their progress.

Kids can use these sheets to write down how many minutes or pages read. Then, you can review and even initial the log if you’d like.

Some parents may also choose to use a reward system for a little extra motivation. But, of course, that’s totally optional.

If you like these templates, you may also want to grab a homework planner or a summer reading log for when school is out.

Monthly reading charts without an initials column

With these, you can track the date, name of the book, reading time, and the number of pages. Some also include two additional sections for writing a goal and a reward.

These do not have the extra column for parent signatures/initials. However, you can find the ones that do below.

January through December

These reading logs include the names of each month. All 12 months are available. Each month has its own color scheme.

What is the point of using a daily reading log?

For starters, it’s a tangible way to track your child’s reading progress and it can be quite motivating for kids no matter the grade level.

But there are a few not-so-obvious benefits too:

It keeps kids organized. They will have a plan that’s easy for them to follow (maybe a certain amount of pages or minutes per day is the goal). And that alone helps alleviate a lot of stress, especially when those larger book assignments start rolling in.
A reading log encourages consistency. Over time, reading will start to get easier and easier.
What’s so great about consistency? It will help them build those reading habits.
It’s also an excellent introduction to goal-setting in general.

Reading Trackers

This reading printable pack is great for kids, but also adults as I hope to use these myself!

Reading has always been a hobby for me, but in recent years, I find it harder to find the time to read as much as I’d like.

I always image I will read all sorts of exciting novels, scary horror stories and murder mysteries, romance novels, and the list goes on.

Regardless of the genre, a good book has a way of transporting you to another place!

BUT, life can sometimes get in the way.

Hopefully this free reading log will help you (AND me) improve our summer reading. My hope is that my reading habits will carryover to the rest of the year!

Lately, I’ve been very interested in audiobooks. While I think reading an old-fashioned book is best, I also think it is completely fine to keep track of the audiobooks you listen to on your favorite device in addition to the ones you actually “read”.

Goodreads is also a wonderful way to keep track of this information online. No subscription is needed and you do not need to pay to access.

I enjoy using Goodreads to get book recommendations from other book lovers with similar interests as mine. I only follow a few friends that I consider to have great taste in books. So many of my book ideas come from their reading lists.

One thing I love to do is print out sheets such as these on a full size adhesive label to make my own sticker! I print it to the size of my yearly planner and stick it on one of the blank pages in the back part of my planner.

Hey bookworms! While I love Goodreads and its platform for tracking my reading goals, I wanted to create customized free printable reading log templates to personalize my reading experience!

I also track what I read on my Bookstagram , but it’s so nice to have a physical copy. These reading logs also help with my own book organization— with so much digital clutter , it’s refreshing to have an actual piece of paper in front of me to track my books.
