IELTS Writing Task 2: 7 steps towards a band 7

For many of you, achieving that magic number in your IELTS Writing test can be a big challenge. Sometimes, all you need is a mentor who can guide you on how to approach the test. Here are 7 important steps that will help you achieve a band 7 in Writing.

Follow these simple guidelines to help improve your writing skills. If you are a visual learner, jump to the bottom of the page for an equally informative video on 7 steps towards a band 7 in Writing Task 2.

Step 1: Answer all parts of the question

IELTS Writing Task 2 requires you to write an essay in response to a statement, or premise. You must read the question carefully so that all parts are answered. For example, in the question below, you must do 3 things to achieve a higher band, showing the examiner that you are addressing all parts of the task.

Present one view

Present the other view

Present your opinion

Example question:

Some people think that wild animals should not be kept in zoos. Others believe that there are good reasons for having zoos.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Present  one view  and then the  other view , and then present  your opinion .

Wild animals are kept in zoos all over world. At present, zoos are a tourist attraction in many countries and need wild animals to attract vistors. I beleve that wild creatures should not be kept in zoos and there should be alternative ways to see them.

There are many good reasons for having zoos in our cities. Most importantly, they attract tourists and make money for city. Visitors get chance to see wild animals that they would not see unless they travelled far away. Rare species, like Chinese panda, or Indian tiger, or African rhino for example, are endangered and if we had no zoos they would die. Zoos care for these aminals and give us chance to see them. Therefore, we cannot underestimate teh educational importance of zoos.

However, many people feel that wild animals should be free. They should not be kept in cages and small areas in zoo. This is cruel for animal and they often die because they is not in natural habitat. We frequently see news story about rare animals dying in zoos or getting sick because area is not big enough or suitable for wild animals like lions or polar bears. Also, these animals are unhappy and sometimes attack humans. Caging wild animals is unhealthy for the animals and is cruel.

Both views put forward valid points, however, I strongly believe that zoos are no place for wild animals. If animals need to be cared for, they should be looked after in theier natural habitat in game parks or wildlife reserves. Goverments should look after the precious wild animals at their country and should close down zoos that profit from them.

In conclusion, although people believe that zoos are good places to keep wild animals because they can earn money and educate people, I feel that we do not need zoos anymore. We can look at wild animals on the internet and we can feel happy knowing that they are free.

Step 2: Present a clear position

Although you are presenting different points of views in your essay, you must present a clear position. This simply means you must let the examiner know what you think about the question. Your position must be clear for the complete essay. Don’t change your mind in the conclusion.

Both views put forward valid points, however, I strongly believe...

However, many people feel that...

I believe that wild creatures should not be kept in zoos...

Step 3: Structure your essay

Essay writing need not necessarily be a difficult achievement. Present your ideas in a structured manner using paragraphs to present and develop each idea. Make use of the following points to help you structure your essay.

Show the reader where to start with an introduction paragraph.

Present ideas that are important and then, elaborate further.

Conclude the essay with your opinion on the question.

Develop a clear idea within each paragraph.

Make it easy for the examiner by leaving a space between each paragraph.

Essay example

Introduction

Wild animals are kept in zoos all over world. At present, zoos are a tourist attraction in many countries and need wild animals to attract vistors. I heire that wild creatures should not be kept in zoos and there should be alternative ways to see them.

First view

There are many good reasons for having zoos in our cities. Most importantly, they attract tourists and make money for city. Visitors get chance to see wild animals that they would not see unless they travelled far away. Rare species, like Chinese panda, or Indian tiger, or African rhino for example, are endangered and if we had no zoos they would die. Zoos care for these aminals and give us chance to see them. Therefore, we cannot underestimate he educational importance of zoos.

Second view

However, many people feel that wild animals should be free. They should not be kept in cages and small areas in zoo. This is heir for animal and they often die because they is not in natural habitat. We frequently see news story about rare animals dying in zoos or getting sick because area is not big enough or suitable for wild animals like lions or polar bears. Also, these animals are unhappy and sometimes attack humans. Caging wild animals is unhealthy for the animals and is cruel.

My opinion

Both views put forward valid points, however, I strongly believe that zoos are no place for wild animals. If animals need to be cared for, they should be looked after in heir natural habitat in game parks or wildlife reserves. Goverments should look after the precious wild animals at their country and should close down zoos that profit from them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although people believe that zoos are good places to keep wild animals because they can earn money and educate people, I feel that we do not need zoos anymore. As far as I am concerned, wild animals should be set free.

Step 4: Use linking devices

Linking devices or transition words are connecting words and phrases that make your answer cohesive. It is the glue that sticks your sentences and ideas together. The below table shows some linkers that are frequently used in essays.

On one hand

Whereas

On the other hand

Because

Firstly

Similarly

Another

Finally

However

Nevertheless

Despite

Consequently

Although

In conclusion

Regardless

In addition

For example

As a result

Therefore

Undoubtedly

Step 5: Use a range of vocabulary

Writing is a means of communicating your thoughts and ideas to the reader. Therefore, make use of vocabulary that is easy to understand. Also, only use words that you can easily spell. Use words that go naturally together – collocation, and include idiomatic language/phrasal verbs in your essay. This proves to the examiner that you can use a range of vocabulary. And finally, check for spelling errors and typos after you complete your writing task.

Examples of collocation:

Tourist attraction

Alternate ways

Rare species

Natural habitat

Examples of idiomatic language and phrasal verbs:

To be cared for

Close down

Make money

Chance to see

Looked after

Step 6: Use a range of grammatical structures correctly

When you are aiming for a band 7, you need to master both simple and complex sentences. And remember that you must produce frequent error-free sentences as well. So, how do you think you can achieve that? Yes, with practice. Try out sample test papers and analyse the mistakes you usually make. When you keep practicing different sentence structures, we are sure you are going to improve writing an essay on any given topic.

Examples of grammatical structures

Articles

Most importantly, they attract tourists and make money for (the) city; visitors get (a) chance

Subject/verb agreement

because they is (are) not in natural

Prepositions

wild animals at (in) their country

Plurals

We frequently see news story (stories)

Punctuation

Most importantly, they attract tourists and make money for the city.

Step 7: Check your essay thoroughly

Even after you produce a perfect essay, you may make careless spelling and grammatical mistakes. These can easily be eliminated if you check your essay thoroughly. Ask yourself the following questions once you complete your writing task.

Did I answer all parts?

Did I use paragraphs?

Did I use linkers?

Did I use punctuation?

Did I check my work?

Is my spelling correct and did I use a range of vocabulary?

Did I use complex sentence structures?

When you can answer to these questions positively, you are surely on your way to a band 7 score!

Band 7 model IELTS task 2 essay reviewed (by ex-IELTS examiner)

In this tutorial we have a band 7 essay graded by an ex-IELTS examiner (from our team of essay correctors!).

First you can read the essay, and after we break down which sentences helped this essay score a band 7.

Take a look at some IELTS writing task 2 questions to help your prepare for your IELTS task 2 .

Each criteria has been considered and the sentence in the essay has been colour coded to correspond to the fours marking criteria used by the British Council / IELTS IDP .

This tutorial will help you understand:

  • How an essay gets a band 7
  • What sentence structures and language is needed for a band 7 in the IELTS writing
  • How you can link ideas smoothly

At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults, compared with the number of older people. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?

It is well known that some countries have a population with more young people than old people. Even this fact could have both advantages and disadvantages, In my opinion the positive implications of having a youthful population over-weigh the negative ones. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages giving examples to support both points of view.

On one hand, having more younger people could lead to a lack of professionals in the society. Older population may be more educated than the young one, this is being why they have had more time to study a professional career during their lives.

For example, to become a specialist physician it is needed at least 10 years of university studies and this may not be able for a young adult yet. In addition, younger population have less life experience than old population. People after their 50’s may have been through a lot in life and they may be more prepared to solve any day-life problem than younger people. This could help to form a less stressful society.

Lastly, younger populations are likely to have higher rate of crime, this could be because young people have more energy to commit crime than old people. A study from the University of Chile showed that in the south of Chile, where the population is mostly young, the rate of robs and crimes where twice higher than in the north where most of the population where in their 50’s and older.

On the other hand, youthful populations are in general more active and more happy. This may be because they have less old age-associated illness leading them to work more and maintain them-self more active. Adding to the fact that healthy people can work more efficiently, with this they can contribute to the economy of the country, making money instead of spending.

For instance, it is a fact that old societies spend a lot of money in health for their old citizens. Another positive aspect of having young adult populations is that there are more chances of having outstanding sport professionals. Young people have more time and more energy than old people to practice and become an excellent sport professional.

In soccer most of the players retires from their soccer-career when they turn thirty years old. With old people there would be no time to start a sport career. And last but not least, young societies are more likely to have outdoor activities for the community. This could be because they are more proactive in organize those activities and also more likely to participate in them. Old people may be too tired to go out.

To conclude with the arguments given above, I firmly believe that the advantages of youthful population over-weigh the  disadvantages. Even though, there are some positive aspects of having an older population that we should consider.

It is well known that some countries have a population with more young people than old people (TR1). Even (CC1) this fact could have both advantages and disadvantages, In (GR1) my opinion the positive implications of having a youthful population overweigh the negative ones (TR2). This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages (LR1) giving examples to support both points of view.

TR1 - Good to begin by paraphrasing the question. CC1 - Check the meaning / use of ‘even’. GR1 - Check your use of punctuation. TR2 - Good to state your opinion clearly. LR1 - A bit repetitive. Try to vary your use of vocabulary if you can.

On one hand (CC2) / (TR3) having more younger people could lead to a lack of professionals in the society. Older population may be more educated than the young one, this is being why (LR2) they have had more time to study a professional career during their lifes (LR3) . For example (CC3) / (TR4) , to become a specialist physician it is needed at least 10 years of university studies and this may not be able for a young adult yet (GR3). In addition, younger population have less life experience than old population. People after their 50’s (LR4) may have been through a lot in life (LR5) and they may be more prepared to solve any day-life problem than younger people. This could help to form a less stressful society. Lastly, younger populations are likely to have higher rate of crime, this could be because young people have more energy to commit crime than old people. A study from the University of Chile (TR5) showed that in the south of Chile, where the population is mostly young (GR4) , the rate of robs (LR6) and crimes where twice higher than in the north where most of the population where in their 50’s and older.

CC2 - An appropriate phrase to introduce your first ‘body paragraph’. TR3 - Good organisation / use of paragraphing. LR2 - because LR3 - life (singular), lives (plural) CC3 - Appropriate language to introduce an example. TR4 - Good to include an example to support your idea. GR3 - Some problems with sentence structure here. Perhaps ‘specialist physicians require at least… and young adults have not yet had time to accumulate this knowledge..’? LR4 - Perhaps ‘who are over fifty’. LR5 - Perhaps a bit on the informal side, but lovely natural use of language. TR5 - Again, good to use examples to support your comments. GR4 - Accurate use of a relative clause. LR6 - Take care here. ‘Rob’ is a verb - and the noun is ‘robbery’.

On the other hand (CC4) / (TR6), youthful populations are in general more active and more happy. This may be because (CC5) they have less old age-associated illness leading them to work more and maintain them-self more active (LR7) . Adding to the fact that healthy people can work more efficiently, with this they can contribute to the economy of the country, making money instead of spending (GR4) . For instance, it is a fact that old societies spend a lot of money in health for their old citizens (LR8) . Another positive aspect of having young adult  populations is that there are more chances of having outstanding sport professionals. Young people have more time and more energy than old people to practice and become an excellent sport professional. In soccer most of the players retires (GR5) from their soccer-career when they turn thirty years old (LR9 ). With old people there would be no time to start a sport career. And last but not least (CC6) , young societies are more likely to have outdoor activities for the community. This could be because they are more proactive in organize those activities and also more likely to participate in them. Old people may be too tired to go out.

CC4 - A suitable phrase to begin the second ‘body paragraph’. TR6 - Appropriate organisation / use of paragraphs. CC5 - Smooth use of referencing to link to the previous sentence. LR7 - This sounds a bit odd. Perhaps ‘stay / keep (more) active’. GR4 - spending it LR8 - This could be more natural. Perhaps ‘on health care for their senior citizens’? GR6 - … most of the players / most players retire… LR9 - Natural use of vocabulary. CC6 - Perhaps a little informal, but very natural use of language.

To conclude (CC7) / (TR7) with the arguments given above, I firmly believe that (TR8) the advantages of youthful population over-weigh the disadvantages (LR10) . Even though, there are some positive aspects of having an older population that we should consider.

CC7 - An appropriate way to begin your final paragraph. TR7 - Good organisation. LR10 - Take care with spelling - ‘advantages’, ‘disadvantages’ - and you need ‘outweigh’ rather than ‘over-weigh’. TR8 - Good to state your position clearly.

Criminal Justice

Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that capital punishment should never be used. Others, however, argue that it should be allowed for the most serious crimes.

Some people believe the purpose of prison is to punish, while others would argue that rehabilitation is its primary role.

Some people feel unsafe when they are in public and at home.

What are the possible causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Some people say that excessive noise should be a criminal offence, while others say they should be free to make noise without limitation.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In some countries levels of health and fitness are decreasing and average weights are increasing.

What do you think are the causes of these problems and what are some possible solutions?

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any other experiences we may have in our life.

Which do you consider to be the major influence?

Schools should do more to teach students about their health and wellbeing.

Do you agree or disagree?

More and more schools allow fast-food restaurants to sell their products to their students.

Is it a positive or negative development?

University students must pay all tuition fees, because it benefits mostly them individually, rather than the society as a whole.

Do you agree or disagree?

Some say that music, art and drama are as important as other school subjects, especially at the primary level.

Some people believe that studying history is very important and we must study the past to understand the present. Others say that it is useless and should not be studied at all.

Some teachers tend to reward students who achieve high academic results. Others, however, support and reward students that show the most improvement.

Giving lectures in halls to large numbers of people is an outdated method of teaching. With the technology available today, there is no justification for it and everything should be done online.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In most universities students focus on specialised subjects, however, some people believe that universities should encourage students to study a wider variety of subjects.

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician.

Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

Some parents think that childcare centres provide the best services for children of pre-school age. Other working parents think that family members such as grandparents will be better carers for their kids.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Governments should spend more money on education than on recreation and sports.

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).

Some people think that it is better to educate girls and boys in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.

Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject.

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults.

Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more academic work.

How do you think children should spend their free time?

In many countries schools have severe problems with student behaviour.

What do you think are the causes of this?

What solutions can you suggest?

University students should pay in full for their own education instead of the society funding their studies. The reason is that individuals tend to benefit after graduation more than society.

To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinion.

Some people believe that students should be allowed to evaluate and criticise their teachers to improve the quality of education. Others think this is disrespectful to teachers.

Discuss both views, give your opinion and include relevant examples.

Youth Crime

Nowadays many young people deliberately damage public places.

What are the causes and solutions?

Some people believe that a person’s criminal record should be removed when they reach the age of 18.

More and more young people are using drugs and alcohol and as a result, breaking the law.

What are the causes of this problem?

What are some possible solutions?

Children should never be put in prison with adults no matter how serious their crime.

Being a celebrity – such as a movie star or professional athlete – brings problems as well as benefits.

Do you think that being a celebrity has more benefits or drawbacks?

Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film stars, pop musicians or sports stars) are paid too much money.

Which other types of job should be highly paid?

Successful sports professionals can earn much more money than people in other important jobs. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair.

Environment

There is a growing demand for fresh water nowadays and this is becoming a global problem.

Many people think that too much attention and resources are given to the protection of wild animals and birds.

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

What other measures do you think might be effective?

Nowadays we are producing more and more waste.

What are the causes of this?

What can be done to help reduce the amount of waste we produce?

Many people believe that companies and individuals should pay to clean up the environment in proportion to the amount of pollution they have produced.

Global warming is the biggest threat we face today.

Children today are too dependent on computers and electronic entertainment. It would be better to encourage them to spend more time outside playing sports and games.

Some people say that public libraries are an important public resource and should be free. Others say that they are just a waste of public money.

Some people think that excessive use of smartphones badly affects teenagers’ literacy skills.

The internet contains a lot of information that can help people, however, sometimes the information is inaccurate or wrong.

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make?

Has this become a positive or negative development?

Computers have made the world a better place to live in.

Some people believe that the use of mobile phones in public is as annoying as smoking and should be banned.

Most high-level positions in companies are filled by men even though the workforce in many developed countries is more than 50 percent female. Companies should be required to allocate a certain percentage of these positions to women.

Nowadays more and more people have to compete with young people for the same jobs.

What problems does this cause?

Women and men are commonly seen as having different strengths and weaknesses.

Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender?

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction?

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Some people think that people in senior positions alone should make decisions in a business, while others think that employees should be involved in the decision-making process too.

Nowadays many people work part- or full-time from home. Some people say that working from home has many benefits while others disagree.

For some people a high salary is the most important criterion when choosing a new job while others are satisfied if the job contributes to society.

Globalisation

In many places, traditional food has been replaced by international fast food. This has adverse effects on individuals and society.

More and more people are visiting historic sites and sometimes tourists damage these ancient sites. The number of people visiting these places should be strictly limited.

Shopping has developed from a necessary activity to a kind of entertainment.

Many small businesses are being forced to close because they are unable to compete with multinational corporations.

What problems does this cause and how can those problems be solved?

Multinational companies are becoming increasingly common in developing countries.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Government Spending

People prefer to watch foreign films rather than locally produced ones.

Why do you think this happens? Should the government support local filmmakers financially?

Some people think that governments should invest more in public services instead of wasting money on arts such as music and paintings.

Some people believe that the government should pay for and offer to house people who lost their homes or cannot afford them.

Some people think that the government should fund music, dance and art lessons for children. Others think that they should be funded by private businesses or by children’s families.

Many people think that the government should spend money to explore outer space, while others think that it’s a waste of public money.

Some people think that mothers should spend most of their time raising their family, and therefore the government should support them financially.

Development

In some countries, the numbers of children aged 15 and younger are increasing dramatically.

What are the current and future effects of an ever-increasing population?

A recent study showed that people in developed countries are not as happy as they were before development.

What are the causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Sometimes celebrities get invited to international aid events.

Do you think that such events deviate from their main purpose by inviting famous people?

Some people believe that richer countries should give poorer countries more financial assistance.

Some people believe that no aid should be given to developing countries that have poor human rights records.

Public Transport

Some people think that a car is the best way to travel in cities while others believe a bicycle is a better way to commute.

Many cities have serious problems with traffic congestion.

What are the causes of these problems and what are some possible solutions?

Growing numbers of cities are making their centres pedestrian-only zones.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Some people believe that the best way to reduce traffic congestion is to increase the price of petrol.

Every year several languages die out. Some people think that it is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is becoming increasingly popular for people to travel to tourist destinations during public holidays.

What solutions are there to these problems?

Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.

Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behaviour. Others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences.

At present, the media affects people’s lives significantly.

What impact does this have on society? Is it a negative or positive development?

Young people say that travelling to different countries benefits them and society.

Do you agree or disagree? Give your opinion.

These days, more fathers stay at home and take care of their children while mothers go out to work.

What are the main reasons for this? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

However, it’s important that you use them wisely. Simply reading through them won’t improve your skills or your score. When using IELTS Writing sample essays, I always recommend following my ___ step strategy:

  • Start off by reading the question – NOT the answer.
  • Attempt to answer the question under exam conditions.
  • Compare your letter with the sample answer.
  • Improve your original answer by using some of the elements you noticed in the sample letter. Eg. how did the writer use structure, vocabulary and grammar?

Writing task 2 for Band 7-Essay Evaluation

Writing task 2 for Band 7-Essay Evaluation

Here is the recent exam Essay Writing Question appeared in Writing task two.The answer has been evaluated and a model answer is specified.

A GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE  FEEL THAT ANIMALS  SHOULD NOT BE EXPLOITED BY PEOPLE. HENCE, THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS HUMANS. so, WHILE  OTHERS ARGUE THAT HUMANS MUST EMPLOY ANIMALS TO SATISFY THEIR VARIOUS NEEDS . HENCE, INCLUDING USES OF FOOD AND RESEARCH. DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS AND GIVE YOUR OPINION.

Today it is almost impossible to see human environment without animals.

There are enormous fields, where humans are dependent on animals. First and foremost is, the milk industry. Milk is known as the complete food for human being, without which there will be deficiency of vitamins in the body and ultimately immunity of human body will be compromised .But,this is like  give and take job. Extraction of  milk without taking care of animal’s necessities like food, water, vaccination and residence must not be done.

There are fields like medical research, where the experiments of new medicines are performed on animals prior to trying on human volunteers.Without animal experiments advanced medicines can not be brought to the market . Hence, which are effective in fighting against deadly illnesses. But it does not mean that researched animal should be left neglected. They must be provided basic necessities.Animals  like dogs . So specially sniffer dogs can save life of entire community by detecting bombs and other threats. In hilly areas animals remain best mode of transportation where vehicles can not get proper access.

However,to nurture leather industries and meat industries, masaccring animals is abhoring.  As desire to saturate hunger. Also,by slaughtering animals and  fulfilling dreams of wearing leather garments at the cost of animals’ life . Also, is not the wise way to emply.

Objective: Band 6.0

  • The word count is just ok i.e. 259 words which is between the word count of 250-270 words.
  • Further, the opinion is missing.

Coherence on Essay Writing: Band 7.0

  • Two to three sentences are long and incoherent.

Grammar for Essay Writing : Band 4.0

  • Over usage of punctuation/Absence of punctuation.

Incorrect: “There are enormous fields, where humans are dependent on animals”

Correct: “There are enormous fields where humans are dependent on animals.”

Incorrect:”First and foremost is, the milk industry.”

Correct:”First and foremost is the milk industry.”

Incorrect: “In hilly areas animals remain best mode of transportation where vehicles can not get proper access.”

Correct: “In hilly areas, animals remain best mode of transportation where vehicles can not get proper access.”

  • Appropriate usage of articles.

Incorrect:” Animals  like dogs ,especially sniffer dogs can save life of entire community by detecting bombs. Also and other threats.” Since article is missing before entire

Correct: Animals  like dogs ,especially sniffer dogs, can save life of an entire community by detecting bombs . Also, and other threats.

  • Avoid spelling errors.

vocabulary for Essay Writing : 6.0

  • This essay presents a decent range of vocabulary but still better can be done.

Overall Band  for Essay Writing : 7.0

Sample Essay Writing:

ANIMALS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS HUMANS. ALSO, WHILE  OTHERS ARGUE THAT HUMANS MUST EMPLOY ANIMALS.ALSO,  TO SATISFY THEIR VARIOUS NEEDS INCLUDING USES OF FOOD AND RESEARCH.

DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS AND GIVE YOUR OPINION.

The sentiments in favour of and against animal usage for various human needs have always remained in the forefronts of discussion.  This write up will attempt to debate both views, thereby arriving at a conclusion.

From time immemorial, early man has been using animals. Especially employing them to satisfy his basic needs of food, clothing, hunting, transportation etc.  While cattle rearing for food and diary needs become the next best things known to man. But, after agriculture, he started domesticating animals such as dog for security, donkeys and bulls . So, as beasts of burden, horses and elephants as transportation vehicles etc.  As time progressed, man found several other avenues wherein animals could partner with him for progression . Specifically, of the human race such as research, medicine etc.

However, some sections of the society are against the usage of animals for any need, whatsoever.  For instance the PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) activists. They hold nationwide protests to create sentiments in favor of animals. The famous Salman Khan’s black buck case booked the actor for harming endangered species.  Similarly,  Jallikatu protests banned bull race in Tamil Nadu. Also, with the objective of eliminating or minimizing cruelty on bulls.

I personally feel that animals are very much a part and parcel of the human civilization . Also mankind will be incomplete without their association, support, and contribution. Mankind should be benefited by them. But,  however, the right checks and balances should be in place to ensure prevention of their exploitation.

Your Guide to IELTS Band 7

The Differences Between Band 6 and Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2

Many of the students who come to my website and join my courses are stuck at Band 6 or 6.5 for IELTS Writing, and they want to know the answer to this question:

How do I get from Band 6 to Band 7?

Well, there are 5 key differences between Band 6 essays and Band 7 essays.

Resources for this Video:

  • Download the IELTS Writing Task 2 Band Descriptors
  • Learn more about Carrier Nouns
  • Discover the 4 types of Complex Grammatical Structure

Create your own summary of the video! Click or tap on the CORRECT statement from the 4 options, and build your own summary of the video. If you make a mistake, just try again!

Key Difference #1

In Band 6 essays,  some  ideas are  inadequately developed .

In Band 7 essays,  all  ideas are developed.

So, to get a Band 7 for Task Response you must make sure that you  explain and illustrate all of your ideas  (e.g. the reasons for your view, the reasons for the views in a discuss both views essay, the problems, the disadvantages).

If you fail to explain any of your ideas, you will be stuck at Band 6.

Key Difference #2

In Band 6 essays, there is  clear overall  progression.

In Band 7 essays, there is  clear  progression  throughout .

Progression means: “is your essay going somewhere?”

Band 6 essays get from A to B, but they might wander around a bit:  some arguments might go in circles, some sentences might repeat something already said.

In Band 7 essays, EVERY sentence adds something new to the essay. There is no repetition.

So, to get a Band 7 for Coherence and Cohesion,  EVERY sentence in your essay must have a purpose . Don’t keep repeating yourself, and make sure your argument is clear.

Key Difference #3

In Band 6 essays, some  cohesion  is  faulty or mechanical .

In band 7 essays,  cohesion  is  generally appropriate .

Cohesion means things like transition signals, referencing, substitution and conjunctions.

Band 6 essays tend to use cohesive devices in quite a rigid way, and some cohesive devices, especially transition signals, may be used incorrectly.

Band 7 essays tend to use cohesive devices correctly, even though they may be used too often, or not enough.

So if you want to get Band 7 for Coherence and Cohesion, be careful not to make mistakes with transition signals and referencing. Just use transition signals you know well; you don’t need to use ‘advanced’ words like “nevertheless” or “notwithstanding”!

Key Difference #4

Band 6 essays tend to  lack vocabulary which has a precise meaning .

Band 7 essays contain  some vocabulary which has a precise meaning .

So, to get a Band 7 for Lexical Resource, select nouns and verbs that have a precise meaning, but also use words in combination, since “traffic congestion” has a more precise meaning than “traffic”.

Key Difference #5

Band 6 essays tend to use a  restricted range of complex grammatical structures , and may rely heavily on complex sentences.

Band 7 essays use a  variety of complex grammatical structures , including complex noun phrases, complex verb phrases and complex verb patterns.

So, to get a Band 7 for Grammatical Range and Accuracy , use these other types of complex grammatical structure. But try to use them accurately, since too many errors could keep you at Band 6.

Here’s a quick summary of these 5 key differences. (Click on the image for a full-size version.)

differences between ielts band 6 and band 7

So that’s how to get from Band 6 to Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2 .

I hope this helps you, and thank you for reading!

Dear Teacher,

I am studying for the IELTS exam I will be taking on February 20th 2010, and a good friend of mine told me about this blog. He told me it would be a good idea to join your group.

This is the first time I have entered to this website, and being new here, I would like to know if there is a way to submit some exercises in this blog, and if it is possible for you to go over them and make comments. If it is in fact possible, could you please tell me how to do it? I will send some of my paperworks, I promise not to over send exercises.

Thank you in advance for all the help you could provide me. It is really a comfort to know that there are people who can help you prepare for this important exam.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Alejandra Silva.

Hi Alejandra,

You can submit your tasks and our evaluation team will return them to you checked, graded, with errors highlighted and fixed and, most importantly, with suggestions how you can score higher. Here is all the information, click on this link: Writing Evaluation Service .
