Tourism as a major engine for generating employment and sustainable livelihoods. Indian civilization is one of the oldest and richest in the world with a wide range of cultural and natural assets. The country is a major international tourist destination, a position it is reinforcing through the highly successful ‘Incredible India’ campaign. Nainital which occupies a place of pride on the tourist map of India, is a growing centre located on the outer margin of central Himalaya, about 300 km north east of Delhi. Although the town holds great potential for development of various grades of recreation for tourists, there is an intense and unplanned tourist activity going on in its limited space with little touristic infrastructure. However, as Tourism and environment are inextricably linked and interdependent, this rapid growth is not preceded by planning strategies, negative effects are evident. The natural beauty of its landscape – the very basis of tourist activities in the region- may be spoiled by uncontrolled exploitation. Therefore, there is a great need of judicious land use and planned development that conforms to the laws of nature to ensure a healthy socio- economic growth in tourist areas. This calls for Tourism which is economically viable but does not destroy the resources on which the future of tourism will depend, notably the physical environment, and the social fabric of the host community. Moreover, an understanding of how market economies operate, of the cultures and management procedures of private sector businesses and of public and voluntary sector organizations, and of the values and attitudes of the public is necessary in order to turn good intentions into practical measures. The concerns of sustainable tourism in Nainital are not just environmental, but also economic, social, cultural, political and managerial.

Several investigations have evaluated the research trajectory concerning entrepreneurship; nonetheless, only a few studies have examined the literature trajectory regarding entrepreneurship in tourism. Therefore, this research explores papers spanning from 2013 to 2023, mapping thematic, intellectual, and conceptual frameworks using bibliometric techniques. The research delves into scientific output, prolific authors, influential articles, co-occurrence of keywords, co-citations, and many others. The keywords “tourism” OR “travel & tourism” AND “entrepreneurship” OR “entrepreneur” were strategically employed to encompass 514 articles and review papers published in English between 2013 and 2023. VOSviewer was used as a technique for doing topic grouping alongside performance analysis. With 85 articles, 2023 is the most productive year. The most influential institution is “ The Hong Kong Polytechnic University ” and the nation is the United Kingdom correspondingly. Likewise, the most renowned journal is “ Tourism management ,” and the most productive journal is “ journal of sustainable tourism ”. Furthermore, the most cited article is “ Scale, change and resilience in community tourism planning .” This research provides researchers with insights into the existing state of research on entrepreneurship in tourism and offers guidance for future research. This study is the inaugural endeavor to present both performance evaluations and scientific clusters of the literature on entrepreneurship in tourism.

This paper studied the status of sustainable tourism at the destination level. The key objective is to analyze the performance of destinations comparatively based upon the perceptions of tourism stakeholders: tourists, residents, and service providers. Perceptions of surveyed respondents are converted into individual weights by statistical operations proposed by Chakrabarty (2014) and Bhattarai and Rajan (2021) with further additions. EXCEL and SPSS were used for data entry, normalization, and other calculations. The weights calculated are normalized individually for each variable destination wise. A composite index methodology was followed to calculate the values of indicators and dimensions for each tourism spot. The score gained confirms the moderate performance, and however, it differs among the surveyed destinations. The performance of Kokernag is comparatively weak and is significantly lower for Yusmarg. Though Pahalgam confirmed the moderate status, specific indicators need further development. Srinagar and Gulmarg showed better scores than other destinations; however, the indicators of environment dimension demand further management and protection. Therefore, performance of destinations significantly differs and requires rectifications as per the issues and problems verified by the index results. As a policy outcome, it offered a dynamic approach to upgrade the status of sustainable tourism at destinations in Kashmir Valley.

Tourism has touted as the most lucrative industry emerged in last decade. Therefore, potential from the growth of tourism opportunities can be very well harnessed for the rural development. The research paper has worked on two objectives 1) Clarification of the concept of Rural Tourism, its significance and sustainable tourism development and 2) Contribution of tourism in rural areas through case study analysis of Ranakpur. The tourists’ officers, local residents and tourists were interviewed during Ranakpur festival held in Ranakpur, Pali district, for the primary data and the secondary data were gathered through related research papers, journals, newspaper articles, official websites of Government of Tourism, United Nations World Tourism organisation and other tourism organisation. The paper concluded that the tourism practices when implemented with proper planning, assessing and due care is given to nature, culture and society then it becomes sustainable tourism practices. The contribution of tourism in rural development can be expressed not only in financial terms, but also in terms of jobs, contributions towards funding conservation, encouragement to the adoption of new working practices, and the injection of a new vitality into sometimes-weakened economies. Tourism acts as a backbone for majority of nations especially the growing economies while the adverse impacts of tourism on the environment and the socio-cultural are not ignorable. The tourism sector, if driven well in the right direction, can play a holistic process of economic, social and environmental sustenance aswell as development. Sustainable form of tourism not only ensures the profitable income but also contribute in employment for local stakeholders as well as local community with its minimal stress on environment and traditional value system. To understand the concept of sustainable development and its contributiontowards local community development for Himalayan Indian States, the case studies of North Eastern region and Northern most Himalayan Region of Ladakh arewell-suited. Furthermore, the present study is also an attempt to address the key determinants of sustainability of tourism industry in the North Eastern India and to establish the importance of local entrepreneurship or local community participation in ensuring sustainable tourism development. Abstract In 1988, the United Nations World Tourism organization (UNWTO) defined sustainable tourism as ‘leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems’. Later in 1992, the ‘Earth Summit’ in Rio established the triple principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability. Since then, the principles of sustainable tourism have been adopted by the tourism industry worldwide. In India, the tourism sector is based on its unique endowments of biodiversity, forests, rivers, and its rich culture and heritage. The challenges in this sector lie in successfully preserving these in their original form, and making them accessible to domestic and international travelers, together with safeguarding the economic interest and heritage of local communities. Key words:-Sustainable Tourism, Environmental Issues, Return of Investment, Responsible Tourism, Stallholders, Monitoring & Planning.

Dr. PRAVEEN RIZAL

Tourism sector is not only a growth engine but also an employment generator of the nation. Nevertheless, it is the number of tourist arrival which defines the present status and future prospects of tourism. Further, various measures have been used to rank the top tourism economy in the world especially on the basis of tourist arrival, tourism receipt, tourism expenditure etc. The present study is an attempt to overview and rank the comparative status of tourism among the Indian states, with the help of Density of Tourist Population (DTP). The study concludes that DTP can be used as an easy and simple alternative method to rank the states. According to DTP ranking, Delhi, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu has been ranked as the top five states and Union Territories (U.Ts), and Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya are the lowest five states. The present study advocates for sustainable tourism policy in top ranked states/U.Ts and Tourism destination development policy in lowest ranked states/U.Ts. It has also been observed that the North-eastern states of India need more comprehensive planning in this regard. In this context, the present study does not advocate to stop the inflow of tourists in the area of high DTP area. Rather, it alerts the planner and gives a light to plan properly and take immediate sustainable planning and research for the top ranked states/U.Ts and Tourism Destination Development planning for the lowest ranked states/U.Ts.

Present advancement in field of science and technology has accelerated worldwide growth and progressive development manifold. It is inevitable today for any community or region to explore all its resources and use them optimally for maximum revenue generation and employability. To cater for long-lasting benefits and meeting future needs; adopted expansion model needs to be not merely convincing but also sustainable. In this study a detailed analysis and comparison is drawn between sustainable development and its applicability specifically towards Tourism industry-particularly in context of Kashmir valley. While the region is going for large-scale development in terms of expansion of infrastructure and technology, negative implications of faulty or ill planning and policy deficits in mega tourism related projects needs to be measured prudently. Considering the fragile ecosystem of Kashmir valley, any strategy for expansion of facilities needs to be carefully analyzed and logically planned for an effective and ecologically stable long lasting operation. This study highlights some critical aspects for augmentation of existing tourism grid within the region specifically giving attention to sustainable development model for planning and at the same time endorsing some indispensable scientific recommendations for implementation in order to achieve Kashmir (often regarded as paradise on earth) as a rationalized world class traveler friendly and economically viable & sustainable tourist destination for years to come.
