Fingertip Season 2 Web Series Review: An engaging take on a pertinent set of issues

Remember the one dialogue that our parents had for every problem plaguing our lives? ‘ This is what happens when you are always on your phone.’ Although it was infuriating to receive this response to certain problems, one can’t argue that they were right at times. In many ways, director Shivakar Srinivasan’s Fingertip Season 2 is the web series equivalent of that ominous warning. It tells us how most of our problems can be solved by more careful usage of that palm-sized electronic device in our hands. 

While this is an altogether fresh season, there are not many differences from the first. In fact, it is both a standalone season and a sequel. The first season was treated as a proper anthology with five different stories dealing with five specific internet applications that have the potential to wreak havoc in our lives. In the second season, we once again have five stories, but it is treated as a series. Narratives run parallel this time around, and seamlessly coalesce at multiple points throughout the season.

Fingertip Season 2 is about how the individual stories of a psychiatrist (Aparna Balamurali), a food delivery executive (Vinoth Kishan), a cop (Prasanna), an actress (Regina Cassandra), a high-performing troll (Kanna Ravi), and a perfume shop owner (Sharath Ravi) unfold in dramatic fashion, and in the process, preaches to the audience the vagaries of the digital world. However, it doesn’t take the easy way out by putting all the blame on the technology, but keeps it squarely on the humans behind the tech. But then, one can’t help but wonder about the intent of a series like Fingertip . Is it to tell a story, however scary it is, or is it to make us feel a morbid fear in even reaching out to our phones. However, it is understandable that the makers chose to use this style of narrative because the issue is pertinent and immensely threatening. 

Various issues like hacking, trolling, cyber-bullying, deepfakes, non-consensual video recordings of sex, etc… are dealt with in Fingertip season 2 . It is smart that the writers chose to mount this season as a series because this allows a lot of these issues to be organically moulded into the narrative with a lot of finesse. Barring the storyline of Regina Cassandra, every other story has a direct connection with each other. The starry world fronted by Regina deals with body image issues, and whether she makes peace with them… Such issues are largely brushed away under the carpet as ‘rich people’ problems. While points to the writers for tackling such topics, the writing in this segment doesn’t really sell the concept hard enough. This distance from the other stories makes it a bit harder to relate with, and the only ‘takeaway’ comes across more like a sermon and less as a shared experience. 

There are no such problems when it comes to the other arcs because most of us can see ourselves either being part of the problem or even the victim. Such content thrives on making the audience be part of the narrative, and the writing mostly works but misses a trick or two when it keeps us at an arm’s length at times. Nevertheless, Shivakar puts forward some strong points when it comes to dealing with the horrors of the internet. I particularly liked how the leaked sex videos scandal is handled by the women. When a distraught dad wants to pay off the blackmailer who has a video of his daughter, it is the mother who stands her ground and says, “Let him leak the video. If we stand by our daughter, what does she have to fear? Who can do anything to her?” This is something that resonated across the stories. It is the women who take the all-important step to reclaim their individual choices. 

By playing what is easily the series’ most unique character, Regina once again proves that she is a powerhouse performer who definitely needs to get the roles she deserves. The same can be said for Vinoth Kishan and Kanna Ravi too. They play two sides of the same coin, and it is interesting how the contrast in their character arcs is brought to the fore. One trolls for a profession and the other does it out of a night’s error in judgement, and it is the latter who goes through tumultuous times to get rid of the guilt. It is an interesting parallel to see how the one who is remorseful suffers bigger consequences. Prasanna has a strong emotional arc, which is not often seen in cop roles, and he delivers a convincing performance. Another interesting character sketch is that of Aparna, and I particularly liked how Shivakar and Roju have used most of these roles to make the audience question their own prejudices. 

Another impressive aspect of Fingertip Season 2 is how it advocates the need for non-bottling up feelings and finding an outlet to ask for help. The outlet could be friends, families, or trained professionals, and this is a solid move forward when it comes to the representation of the after-effects of relentless digital damage. In fact, Fingertip is a series that can afford to be preachy, and it is heartening that the writers know when to go all in, and when to rein it in. Basically, Fingertip season 2 is the web series equivalent of one other oft-repeated statement on social media — It is important that we are smarter than our smartphones. But are we? Well… let’s not give unnecessary permissions to one more app to know that.

சைபர் கிரைம் பிரிவு உதவி கமிஷனராக வரும் பிரசன்னாவின் பக்கத்து வீட்டு நண்பரும் அவரது மனைவியும் ஒரு கும்பலால் படுகொலை செய்யப்படுகின்றனர். இதில் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பிரசன்னா அது பற்றி துப்பு துலக்க தொடங்குகிறார். முகத்தில் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள பெரிய தழும்பு காரணமாக மன உளைச்சலுடன் வாழும் இளைஞர் தன் காதலை ஏற்காத பெண்ணின் மீது உள்ள கோபத்தில் கோபமாக பேச அதை வீடியோவாக எடுக்கும் சிலர் அதை சமூக வலைதளங்களில் பரப்பி விடுகின்றனர். அதை பார்த்த இளைஞர்கள் பெண்களை இளம் பெண்களை திட்டி வருகின்றனர். வீடியோவை பார்த்துவிட்டு தன்னைக் காதலிக்காத ஒரு பெண்ணை அவர் வேலை செய்யும் இடத்தில் கழுத்தை அறுத்து கொன்றுவிட்டு தானும் தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்கிறான் ஒரு இளைஞன்.

பிளாஸ்டிக் சர்ஜரி ஹீரோயின்

வீடியோ வெளியிட்ட சம்பந்தப்பட்ட இளைஞனை போலீசார் தேடி வருகின்றனர் இது ஒரு கதை. அபர்ணா பாலமுரளியின் சகோதரியை வீடியோ எடுத்து மிரட்டும் நபரால் சகோதரி தற்கொலை செய்துக்கொள்ள குற்றவாளியை தேடும் முயற்சியில் இறங்கும் கதாநாயகி மிகப்பெரிய ஹேக்கராக உருவாகுகிறார். தன் முகத்தில் உள்ள மூக்கு அவலட்சணமாக இருக்கு என ஃபேஸ் ஆப் பார்த்து பிளாஸ்டிக் சர்ஜரி செய்யும் ஹீரோயின் சந்திக்கும் பிரச்சினை.

பாலியல் ஆபாச படங்களை வெளியிடுவதாக மிரட்டும் நபர் சாதாரணமாக தன்னுடைய இடத்திற்கு பாதிக்கப்பட்டவரை வரச்சொல்வதும் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட வீட்டிற்கு செல்வதும், பணம் பறிப்பதும் காமெடியாக உள்ளது. மிக சிறப்பாக திட்டமிட்டு இயங்கும் ஒருவர் இதுபோன்ற எளிதாக சிக்கும் வகையில் சொல்வாரா என்பதை இயக்குனரின் பார்வைக்கே விட்டுவிடுகிறோம்.

சிறப்பம்சம் என்னவென்றால் இன்றைய நவீன டார்க் நெட் பற்றி கதை பேசுகிறது. ஹேக்கர்கள் பற்றி பேசுகிறது. ஹேக்கர்கள் எவ்வாறு செயல்படுகிறார்கள் நவீன விஷயங்கள் என்ன? எவைகள் குற்றமாகிறது? செல்போன்கள் எவ்வாறு நமக்கு பிரச்சனை ஆகிறது என்பதை சிறப்பாக வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இதை ஒரு விழிப்புணர்வாக எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம். இந்த படம் 8 எபிசோடுகளாக ஜீ-5 ஓடிடியில் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. பொறுமையுடன் முதல் மூன்று எபிசோடுகளை கடந்து விட்டால் அடுத்து வரும் எபிசோடுகள் விறுவிறுவென்று நகர்கிறது.

பிரசன்னாவின் நடிப்பை மிகவும் பாராட்டலாம். போலீஸ் அதிகாரியாக மிடுக்காக செய்துள்ளார். வில்லனாக வரும் நடிகர் கன்னா ரவிக்கு நல்ல எதிர்காலம் உண்டு. அவர் முக பாவனைகளில் உணர்வை எளிதாக வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். மற்றவர்களும் அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற கேரக்டரை அழகாக செய்துள்ளனர். பில்லா இயக்குநர் இயக்குநர் விஷ்ணுவர்தன் தான் இந்த வெப் சீரிஸின் தயாரிப்பாளர். மொத்தத்தில் இந்த வெப்சீரிஸ் ஒரு நல்ல பொழுதுபோக்கு சீரிசாக உருவாகியுள்ளது.

R esearchers I was working with in a previous life were trying to collect blood samples of villagers for a study. Permission from local officials and leaders were taken, and consent forms printed. All was going according to the research timeline. A WhatsApp message emerged from the cesspit of lazed, toxic groups circulating sexism and boredom with a veneer of humour and fact. It said that people were roving around villages, injecting people with HIV. It spread like forest fire. The research process was forsaken, and all permissions were rescinded.

Zee5's ​Fingertip​, directed by S Shivakar, taps into that anxiety. The premise is simple: Social media ruins lives. A cursory look at the titles of each of the five episodes affirms this –

Greed Rage Betrayal Lust Vengeance

Social media makes people anxious; everyone wants to become an influencer, exhibiting a life that is lived differently. It makes people seek revenge, troll and circulate botched images and revenge porn. It makes people promiscuous, hide behind fake profiles, catfish, sleep around, migrate between cities and personalities… it makes them a fuckboy, a husband, a boyfriend.

Each of the five stories is connected by so threadbare a link, it might as well not exist. That's not an issue per se; standalone episodes work here, because making one set of characters embody all the negative effects of social media would be a massacre.

I want to look at this series' curious take on "viral" culture and dating. Lust has been mentioned as an ill-begotten gift of social media. You can see it is in the same category as greed, rage, betrayal and vengeance. Lust is bad, or so Shivakar wants you to believe. So, there is the stereotypical fuckboy, who is emotionally unavailable, looking for "fun". The girl doting on him is pining, jealous, and vengeful (at one point, she says: "You are not the Varun I met online". There is something oddly funny about this line), and the girl's best friend is the fuckboy's next dig. Old wine, old bottle. Message: Dating apps can be bad.

Something similar happens with viral culture – the number of times things go viral makes "Anything can go viral" to become"Anything goes viral". There is a finality to this series that is awfully simplistic and frankly, a little problematic. An actress, retaliating to a video released by an actor's account of her snorting drugs, responds by tweeting her experience of sexual harassment by the actor, with #metoo as an epilogue. Vengeance!

Cinematically, the series is watchable and I know that is an awful threshold. But, given the glut of shoddy content, what a manager called a "garbage dump being constantly hurled at you", it fits. There are moments in the series that genuinely shock you. The performance veers between the real and acted. There's a visceral artificiality in the way some dialogues are written and enacted, but, otherwise, it is harmless.

John Lanchester while reviewing Tim Wu's book The Attention Merchants , cites French novelist Flaubert, and his skepticism about trains in the 1800s. Flaubert thought that 'the Railway would merely permit more people to move about, meet and be stupid.' Two centuries later, the anxiety endures. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about attention to craft.

Sanjay is an actor who is loved by the masses and the classes alike. The star is highly active and vocal on the social media platform Expressit. However, Sanjay is not aware of the surprise that Expressit has in store for him a surprise that will challenge his reputation, his family, and, ultimately, his decade-long career.

Fingertip Season 2 review: How dangers lurk on the Internet and use of technology

Prasanna, Regina Cassandra, Aparna Balamurali, Kanna Ravi and Vinod Kishan stand out in this Zee5 series directed by Shivakar Srinivasan.

Today’s world revolves around social media and technology and with most people owning a smartphone, life has been made so much easier but there are also dangers associated with it. And this is what director Shivakar Srinivasan and writer Rohit have explored in the second season of Zee5’s Fingertip . Touted to be a thriller, the second season, which has eight episodes, stars well-known Tamil actors Prasanna, Regina Cassandra and Aparna Balamurali along with Kanna Ravi, Sharath Ravi and Vinod Kishan.

As the series begins we are introduced to psychologist Shruti (Aparna Balamurali) and see her counselling a young girl who is very upset about her boyfriend making a snuff film of theirs and is scared that it would be leaked online. She makes a presentation to the police as well about the dangers that exist in a digital society and how mental illnesses like depression and suicidal tendencies develop as a result of various factors. None of the cops take her presentation seriously except one - ACP Arivazhagan (Prasanna) who tells her he wants to know more about these issues. On the other side, we are introduced to Priya (Regina Cassandra) an actress who is obsessed with her nose and detests it vehemently. Childhood trauma induced because of her nose haunts her even after becoming a successful actor and she is hell-bent on getting rhinoplasty to change it. As the story progresses we are introduced to the other characters like Adinath (Sharath Ravi) who owns a cellphone store, Venkat (Vinoth Kishan) a delivery guy and Naveen (Kanna Ravi) who is into the creation of fake digital content in the world of Deep Fake. So how do all these characters connect in this real world and in the digital space? This is what director Shivakar Srinivasan unravels for us in the seven episodes that follow.

When it’s a crime thriller there is always a protagonist, plot twists, red herrings and a villain the audience will like to hate. In Fingertip, given that it’s about the dangers of the technological digital age and the dark web, the villain is not one single person but several and writer Rohit and director Shivakar have created and connected that universe quite efficiently over the web series. As for the red herrings and plot twists, there are not as many as one would like but the style and pace of narration ensures that the audience doesn’t get bored or lose interest with the progression of every episode. There are many nuances of the dangers of digital life the director has also shown us subtly and he sets up the end nicely to segue into a third season of Fingertip.

Prasanna, Regina Cassandra, Aparna Balamurali, Sharath Ravi, Kanna Ravi and Vinoth Kishan have essayed their roles well but it’s in the character sketch of some of these actors that the series falters. Sample this: ACP Arivazhagan is a senior cop but when a crime is committed, he is shown to be unable to handle the situation. This doesn’t seem to fit the character of an ACP. Also, Priya, the actress, is said to be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder but the link between this issue and social media has not been well explored. There is more focus on her as an actor and career rather than her mental disorder and how social media is affecting or controlling her everyday life. Given how photo obsessed we are thanks to social media apps, this would have been a great aspect to explore. There are also some cliches that the series clings onto though like a guy rejected in love gets drunk and spews hate on all women; or that psychologists always have a fancy office.

While we can nitpick on some aspects of the web series, the fact is that most of the cyber crimes Fingertip shows us is a reflection of what is happening in society today and it makes the audience aware of the dangers that exist on the Internet and use of social media. There are many nuances of the dangers of digital life the director has also shown us like cyber-crime, phishing, trolling, fake content, data breach and identity theft. Watching this interesting and pretty well-made web series, it will definitely make you think the next time you use technology, the Internet and social media.

Fingertip Season 2 review: This aptly-cast slow-burn cyber-thriller, on Zee5, has its moments

Directed by Shivakar Srinivasan, Fingertip Season 2, is a noteworthy attempt at sensitising audiences about cybercrime. The viewing experience makes you realise that perhaps waiting for something can be worth it.

Story: Internet access is more relevant today than ever before. Nevertheless, there are dangers with every click... The eight-episode series of Fingertip Season 2 (that streams on Zee5), directed by Shivakar Srinivasan, explores the same.

Review: Digital crime is usual these days, and Fingertip Season 2 throws some light on privacy and our vulnerability online. Two issues are central to this web series: cybercrime and human psychology. Taking on more than one subject in a script and finding the right balance while remaining unscathed is a difficult task.

In Fingertip Season 2, Shivakar Srinivasan and writer Rohit find this sweet spot, with the main concerns, vaguely balancing each other.

Psychologist Shruti (Aparna Balamurali) counsels a young girl, who feels devastated, as her boyfriend threatened her that he'd share their intimate pictures on the Internet. "You haven't done anything wrong. He should feel bad for having filmed this without your consent. But, remember, living is the solution, suicide isn't," says Shruti. Eventually, you see her making a presentation to a bunch of cops, about the dark web, and how it has repercussions on mental health, ranging from anxiety, depression, and in extreme situations, suicide. While none of the police officers took the session seriously, ACP Arivazhagan (Prasanna) wants to understand these issues in detail. So, he decides to meet Shruti in person, to discuss things, over a cup of coffee.

On the other hand, you are shown how a female actor (played by Regina Cassandra) is hellbent on reconstructing her nose. You get a glimpse into her past, too. She is struggling with peer pressure, body image issues and other challenges. But there are simply not enough counsellors to go around. Fingertip Season 2 also highlights this. As the series moves forward, you are introduced to the rest of the characters like Venkat (Vinoth Kishan), a delivery executive; Naveen (Kanna Ravi), who promotes trolls on social media and Adinath (Sharath Ravi), a mobile store owner. All of these characters are linked together in Fingertip Season 2.

Even as cybercrime remains the main focus, the script does not take its eyes away from human psychology. Fingertip Season 2 lives up to its potential in some portions, but does not come together as a cohesive whole. There is just too much the web series is trying to say. It feels longer than it should. The concept is admirable, but the execution falls short. On paper, the concept is relatable and probably needed too. But when you watch, you realise it focuses on too many things, and as an audience, you feel suffocated. The trick to writing an engaging thriller is in how you dish out information... How much to give away? How much to hold? The script does not manage to keep the tension going in each of these separate episodes... Some of these cases are solved thanks to some convenient, easy coincidences.

Concerns about surveillance and cybersecurity motivated the writing. However, it appears that the filmmaker leans toward the idea that hacking and surveillance do not always have to be ethical if the purpose is noble. Almost all of these stories were inspired by various cybercrime incidents reported across the country. Had the series been more tightly edited with better pacing, Fingertip Season 2 could have made for a gripping watch rather than something that engages in parts.

All the actors do justice to their parts. Prasanna dons the cop’s role with elan, and the performances of his fellow actors, especially, Vinoth Kishan, Sharath Ravi and Kanna Ravi are the strength of the web series. Regina Cassandra and Aparna Balamurali too have a strong arc and excel in their respective roles. Such will be the impact of Fingertip Season 2 that after watching the web series, you might think twice to reveal any personal information on any digital platform.

Verdict: It is a risky experiment that pays off handsomely in parts.

The second season of the Fingertip series starring Prasanna-Regina Cassandra-Aparna Balamurali will air on ZEE5 from June 17.

ZEE5 is back with another original to entertain the audience. Following the overwhelming response to "Fingertip", the producers are now back with a second season, which airs on the G5 from June 17, 2022.

The series stars Prasanna, Regina Cassandra, Aparna Balamurali, Vinod Kishan, Kanna Ravi and Sharad Ravi in ​​the lead roles, while Raja Krishnamurthy (Kitty), Marimuthu and Harini in the lead roles.

The second season of Finger Tip is a crime thriller series. This is the original series that revolves around how the digital platform and the power of the digital age are at our fingertips. This story explores the dangers that are important in the digital world. Significantly, this series not only stands for one-sided opinion, it also makes clear that technology is a knife-like tool and its effects will depend on how we use it. The series goes on to say that, like other industry or innovation innovations, the 'digital platform' has a myriad of definitions based on the opinions of individuals.

Fingertip Season 2 focuses on the lives of six characters. Some are hunters and some are victims of digital crimes or digital stress. This story is taken in hyperlink style.

Shivavakar Srinivasan is directing the second season of Fingertip, Prasanna's cinematography, Deena Dayalan's music, and G.K. The series is based on Prasanna's editing. Arun Kumar and George C Williams have produced the Fingertip Season 2 series on behalf of Film Crew Productions.

'The Greatest of All Time' movie review: An overdose of Vijay and nothing else

A Vijay’s movie promises drama, sentiments, action, occasional giggles, heroism and countless stylish entry sequences. People know this and his fans love it. Despite being mediocre, they are enjoyable.

However, The Greatest of All Time’ aka Vijay’s The GOAT is nothing but passable and boring. Venkat Prabhu who has consistently entertained the audience with funny storylines and quirky twists in his previous films, hits the wrong balls in this pointlessly cricket-themed entertainer.

The movie is very ambitious putting in a deliberate effort to make the audience happy. For instance, the de-ageing of Vijay’s son’s character who plays an important role. Or, the final action sequence that tries to bring in the CSK sentiments along with a special cameo. The film tries very hard. The result, however, feels very forced and jarring to watch. 

A long list of audience-favourite actors too couldn’t save the movie from boredom. Actors Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Sneha, Jayaram, Mohan, Laila and even an item song by the beautiful Trisha were all stuffed into the movie.

The movie seems driven solely by marketing ideas and not by genuine storytelling attempts.

However, the biggest of all issues is that the character graph of the protagonist who is portrayed to be a super-intelligent SAT agent is poorly written. This makes the characters seem dumb and know-it-all rather than making decisions and moves that are clever or intelligent. 

The puzzles that the SAT agent Gandhi struggles in the film can be compared to something that even a small-time policeman could solve within a few days.

Moreover, the movie does make it sound like the protagonist’s personal problem is India’s biggest problem, for which even the government resources are utilised without any proper explanation.
