Whether maternal or paternal, grandparents symbolise kids’ love, fun, guidance, and happiness. For kids and the whole family, grandparents are the guiding lights that steer them in the right direction. So, writing an essay on grandparents is exciting for kids.

  • My grandparents are always there and love me a lot.
  • They play with me, teach me and also help me learn other creative things.
  • Sometimes, my grandparents cook for me and take me out to the park when my parents are busy.
  • At night, my grandparents help me brush and read bedtime stories.
  • Not only me but my grandparents also love to play with my friends and read stories with us.
  • On weekends, with my parents and grandparents, I go to picnics and have a lot of fun.
  • My grandparents are the ones who get most worried when I am hurt or sick.

  •  I am lucky to have such loving and caring grandparents.

Still, for grandkids like me, grandparents are precious. I wait to be with them and look forward to their visits. My grandparents, too, are an important part of my life. I enjoy visiting them and treasure the times spent with them.

Her loving hug is enough to ward off all my troubles. She softly strokes my hair while she reads me goodnight stories. My grandma bakes delicious cakes, which are my favourite delicacy. My granddad assists me in doing my school assignments. Every weekend, he takes me to the park. I enjoy seeing him feed the local cats and dogs on the street. They’re my grandfather’s closest companions. Every evening, my grandfather also teaches me how to play chess. I love spending time with my grandparents. Essay on Grandparents: Grandparents are always a matter of concern and a source of happiness in every household. They are often a matter of concern because they have weak health. They are a source of joy to the children of the household because of their protective nature. Often it has been seen that grandparents tend to be more protective and caring than parents. This often leads to a grandparent being a child’s best friend within the household.

The family structure these days is often without grandparents. This is because children after they grow up and start earning, are keener to live separately. Therefore when they begin family, grandparents are absent in the household. Here we have provided Grandparents essay covering the topic which might be useful for students in their exams given the commonality and the importance of the subject matter.

Long and Short Essays on Grandparents for Students and Kids in English

Over here, we have written as samples one long essay of 500 words, one short essay of 100-150 words, and ten crucial points that comprehensively cover the subject matter.

Long Essay on Grandparents in English 500 Words

Essay on Grandparents is usually given to students of classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

In pre-industrial and post-industrial setups, the family seemed to be the only functioning social unit. This means that life, for every individual, started and ended within the family. The concept of joint families gradually evolved with the rise of modernity. People in joined families lived together. In the case of joint families, grandparents had a more prominent presence. Such grandparents would usually be the head of the household because of their age.

They also had an important role to play in strengthening family ties and resolving family issues. Children would look at them as their household friends. From reading out stories to saving the child from his parents, grandparents were an integral part of any family with a large number of children. Apart from being caring and protective, grandparents would also be very inspiring to the children. They would often act as role models and provide children without enormous support. In some cases, grandparents would be a child’s only hope.

With the advancement of age, family structures broke down into several small units. Joint families became nuclear families. Most of these nuclear families would consist of a single child and two of his parents. The absence of a household friend often has a psychological impact on the child. Without grandparents, the child tends to be alone and unattended most of the time. This is because these days, both the parents of a child seem to be working. The whole concept of nuclear families has eroded the idea of grandparents to a considerable extent. Parents do not allow children to engage with their grandparents in any way.

In the case of vacations, they opt out of letting the child visit his or her grandparents. Instead, they send them vocational training. Competition and globalization have played an enormous role in influencing the attitude of the parents. Most of them want to make their child the best among everyone.

Since this attitude is shared by many, there is always a sense of strong and stiff competition. The thought of such competition takes away a child’s hobby and his or her past time. This makes it even more difficult for a child to know his or her grandparents. On the other hand, globalization has ushered in the idea of separate and independent living rather than living together.

Most parents often resort to living separately because they feel that their parents are a burden after a certain age. Often, cases are heard when the elderly are seen dead in their households without anyone getting to know about it. This is the worst possible situation for any person. Being a grandparent has thus changed its definition these days. It is more about a formal relationship rather than a close one.

This leads to two things. One, grandparents become more lonely and suffer from that while children are unaccompanied too since they are deprived of a particular form of care and attention. Over the years, grandparents who were the lifeline and the backbone of individual families have come down to being a single entity. All this is because of a change in the ways at which people look at their lives have changed.

Short Essay on Grandparents in English 150 words

Short Essay on Grandparents in English 150 Words

Essay on Grandparents is usually given to classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Grandparents somewhat define the word ‘more.’ They are more than parents, more than friends, and more than caregivers. Grandparents are often the head of their families. The love and attraction between a child and his grandparent are of a different kind. In many cases, grandparents are saviors and guardians of their grandchildren. Nowadays, however, the conceptual understandings have changed. Since people are more engrossed in a competitive lifestyle, the whole idea about a family has gone under transformation. Usually, one might not find grandparents in a single nuclear family. This is because they are often considered to be burdensome. However, there are cases of nuclear families having grandparents. Over there, the child usually enjoys enormous love and support.

10 Lines on Grandparents Essay in English

  • Grandparents are the lifeline of joint families.
  • The whole concept of family has changed over the years.
  • Grandparents are usually not present in nuclear families.
  • Children look up to their grandparents as a household friend.

Grandparents, often affectionately referred to as “grandma” and “grandpa,” hold a special place in our hearts and play an invaluable role in our lives. They are the wise and loving elders who enrich our lives with their stories, guidance, and unconditional love. In this essay, I will argue for the significance of grandparents and their positive impact on families and communities. By exploring their unique roles, the benefits they offer, and the importance of intergenerational connections, I aim to emphasize why grandparents are truly treasures in our lives.

The Unique Roles of Grandparents

Grandparents play multifaceted roles in the lives of their grandchildren and families. They are a source of wisdom, having experienced life’s ups and downs, and are eager to share their knowledge and life lessons. Grandparents often serve as storytellers, passing down family history, traditions, and cultural heritage. They offer emotional support, providing a comforting presence and a listening ear during challenging times. Additionally, they serve as playmates and sources of fun and laughter, creating lasting memories for their grandchildren.

Grandparents as Pillars of Support

Grandparents provide vital support to their families in various ways. Many grandparents are actively involved in helping to raise their grandchildren. They offer a helping hand to working parents by providing childcare and assistance with daily tasks. In some cases, grandparents step in as primary caregivers when needed, ensuring that their grandchildren receive the love and care they deserve. This support system enhances family cohesion and stability.

The Benefits of Intergenerational Connections

Interactions between grandparents and grandchildren offer numerous benefits. Research has shown that strong intergenerational relationships contribute to the emotional well-being of both generations. Grandparents offer a sense of security and unconditional love, boosting their grandchildren’s self-esteem and confidence. Furthermore, spending time with grandparents promotes empathy, understanding, and respect for different generations, fostering a sense of belonging and family unity.

Grandparent’s Impact on Education

Grandparents can have a positive influence on their grandchildren’s education. They often share their passion for learning and encourage curiosity. Grandparents’ stories and experiences can provide valuable insights and inspire their grandchildren to excel academically. Additionally, many grandparents are actively involved in helping with homework, reading stories, and instilling a love of reading and learning.

Health Benefits of Grandparent-Grandchild Relationships

Grandparent-grandchild relationships are not only emotionally enriching but also have health benefits. Studies have shown that grandparents who are actively engaged with their grandchildren tend to have improved mental and emotional well-being. The joy and fulfillment of spending time with grandchildren can have a positive impact on their overall quality of life.

Reducing Isolation and Loneliness

For some elderly grandparents, particularly those who may have lost their spouses, their grandchildren become a source of companionship and purpose. Regular visits and interactions with their grandchildren reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness that can sometimes accompany old age. Grandchildren bring vitality and joy to their lives, making each day more meaningful.

In our lives, they have many important positions, making us better human beings by teaching us the moral principles that direct us in all fields possible. They are our capless superheroes who will come to save us whenever necessary. Here we have provided both Long and Short Speech on Grandparents in English for student`s reference.

Long and Short Speech on Grandparents in English for Students and Children

Long speech on grandparents in english.

Today, I am fortunate enough to get the opportunity to deliver my speech to my grandparents. Being a grandparent can be one of the world's greatest feelings. There is a particular responsibility that the grandparents share with their grandchildren and if good communication is achieved, it becomes stronger with time. Grandparents are usually more enthusiastic about the birth of a child in the family, compared to parents.

They are the roots of the family. They are very experienced and intelligent, and to help new generations learn and develop, they still share the lessons of their precious lives. They support their children and grandchildren selflessly and motivate them to become better individuals.

However, due to the increasing pattern of the nuclear family system, the kids usually do not get to spend a lot of time with their grandparents, they do not always visit each other. Parents, however, have many personal and professional responsibilities and do not provide ample time to take their children to grandparents. It is not possible to learn lessons which we get from our grandparents, by reading books or engaging in any class.

First-time grandparents may not be explicit about their boundaries and rules for interacting with new ones in the family. They might be nervous and have insecurities as they have their educational views and goals. Communication may be another hindrance to the bond between grandparents and grandchildren if they live separately. Parents need to have them involved in the lives of their kids from the start. By allowing them to help with basic things, seeking their suggestions, and addressing any misunderstandings.

A recent survey suggested that with growing times, the value of grandparents is increasing. They play a crucial role in the upbringing of children in modern society too. As they hold the roots of family and culture, they are well versed in controlling the situations and passing their wisdom to the descending generation.

In foreign countries and Metro cities, both mother and father are working people in the majority of cases to keep up with the standard of living and to provide the best lifestyle to their children. In such cases, a child spends the maximum time of his/her day with grandparents. This works as a bonding glue between the children and grandparents. By telling them spiritual stories, they pass on worldly wisdom and moral values to children which helps them to become a better person.

Due to this, there is an emotional connection between them both. Children feel warm in the presence of grandparents. Such children tend to show a more supportive nature towards other students or their friends. In an event of family problems or fights between the parents, grandparents take utmost care of the children so that they are not influenced negatively by their surroundings.

Families with grandparents present demonstrate a much more positive attitude than those who don’t have elders. They bring positivity along with them wherever they go. Countries like China, U.S., India, Britain, and many more are habitual and cultured with grandparents in their families and are equally responsible for the child care and the growth of children. Grandparents don’t need to take care of their children, they do it voluntarily to maintain harmony in the family.

Especially in Asian cultures, families do not make any decisions without the consent of the elders. Such habits express the importance of grandparents in one’s family and also help the family to stay together for as long as possible. Grandparents work as the binding pillars of the family. And at such an age also, they are not ashamed of doing any work whether it is feeding children or making them sleep to bed, sometimes helping their children with family crises or financial problems.

They always behave tenderly and guide everyone in the most appropriate way anyone can ever. Thus, it is our responsibility also to treat them with respect and dignity. A lot of people send grandparents to old age homes, this shouldn’t be a trend. They should be treated as the Asset of the family and not as a liability of the family.

Our grandparents are a library, they are our  personal gamecenter backup instil the best cooks, the best help, great teachers, and a world made of the utmost care and love, all wrapped together in two bodily souls that seem to always be there for us children. Grand, that's the most fitting word for them, which is all I can say. They are the ones who raised our parents, who in our lives are another awesome group of beings.

The wrinkles on their faces are evidence that they are the most seasoned individuals we have in our homes. So it makes it quite important for us children to communicate with them, learn what they are teaching us, learn from their experiences, and then build up our lives. For their grandchildren, having grandparents is one of God's greatest gifts. I hope, in all families, all grandparents are welcomed and cared for.

Short Speech on Grandparents in English

Greetings to everyone present here. Today, I am going to share my views on Grandparents. One who is brought up by his or her parents and grandparents is profoundly enriched by double the experience, twice the affection, twice the fun, twice the values and support they get. Grandparents bring the best out of the children of their most beloved children. Their presence is like the Sun's presence in the lives of their grandchildren. Indeed, children who have not seen their grandparents are the most unfortunate. They remain robbed of a great deal of goodness and genuineness that they otherwise earn.

The ideals instilled in their grandchildren are something that the parents can only dream about. As it is, parents are so busy with their jobs, making the most of all and achieving the living expectations that we have set so high for all of us. Not that it's terrible, but just that spending time with kids when they need you makes it hard a lot of times.

It's just that wherever grandparents are present, parents can go and do what they need for their jobs, and know that for their little bundles of joy, they have this very secure backup with them. All I am suggesting is that there are families for whom having grandparents is a privilege. They may have grandparents living in their hometown or simply because the family left for better opportunities in a foreign country and did not have grandparents. I would like to conclude my speech by saying that in a house where elders are cherished and looked after well, lives God himself.

10 Lines on Speech on Grandparents in English for Children

Grandparents are considered the fundamental root of the family which, with their experience and expertise, provides support to the family.

They share a special bond with their grandchildren and act as a mechanism of mutual support for each other.

By teaching them proper actions, offering motivation in life, and emotional support, they serve as a role model for grandchildren.

The younger generation does not like the grandparents' strict and disciplined attitude towards life that leads to the divide between generations.

For the entire family, striking a balance between generations often becomes an incredibly challenging task that could lead to disagreements and confusion.

Life wisdom from grandparents can be very helpful to the younger generation as they have already experienced different struggles in their own lives.

They are very concerned about their health and also instruct the younger generation in their daily lives to inculcate good behaviour.

They play an important role in the nuclear family, where both parents are professional employees.

Grandparents instil in grandchildren plenty of moral values and ethics that make them appreciate older people in society.

Right from feeding them to telling them bedtime stories, they are well versed with everything they do and pass on their wisdom to everyone. They teach moral values and spirituality to their grandchildren which help them become a better person as they grow up.

3. What are the challenges faced by Grandparents?

With growing times and growing generations, children nowadays tend to react negatively sometimes to their grandparents. They become rigid and reluctant sometimes. Also, the culture now has drastically changed and thus, it becomes difficult for grandparents to understand their grandchildren. They find it hard to handle them or become like them to teach them well. It becomes a tough task to mix with them and become friends with grandchildren. Communication plays an important role over here.

4. What can children learn from grandparents?

Children can learn abundant things from their grandparents like moral values to treat everyone with respect and politeness, spirituality for their inner peace and satisfaction, as in positive approach towards every kind of situation and gentleness. Grandparents are like the standing pillars of the family and thus, children should always consider them as role models and try to walk in their footsteps to obtain a pearl of great worldly wisdom and become better as an individual.

5. What type of questions should grandchildren ask their grandparents?

Having grandparents is a great blessing and thus, grandchildren should ask them about the stories of their childhood and their parents’  childhood. They should learn manners from them. They should hear mythological stories from them to build their imagination power. For more information, you can subscribe to Vedantu’s free study material for a better understanding. Grandparents Essay 1 (200 words)

The bond between grandparents and grandchildren cannot be described in words. Grandparents do not only inculcate good habits and moral values in the kids but also become their best buddies when it comes to having unlimited fun. While the parents try to provide all that they can to their kids for their all round development, their growth is incomplete without their grandparents.

It is seen that grandchildren possess many of the traits of their grandparents. You might have noticed them behaving exactly the same way at times. Interestingly, it is not just the case with those who stay together but also with those who hardly get a chance to meet each other. This is because kids inherit some of their grandparents’ traits by birth.

Unfortunately, the growing trend of the nuclear families has limited the contact between the grandchildren and grandparents and both tend to miss out on a lot owing to this. Parents must take out time and take their children to their grandparents’ place every once in a while to maintain the bond or call them over to stay. If meeting doesn’t seem possible as often then it is suggested to help them stay in touch with each other via phone or other means.

Grandparents Essay 2 (300 words)

Grandparents share a very special bond with their grandchildren. They get along well and are in their happiest state in each other’s company. In certain families, this bond is stronger than that of the parent and child. The love and affection the grandparents shower on their grand children is simply unmatched.

Bond between Grandparents and Grandchildren

While earlier children got to spend abundance of time with their grandparents, however, due to the growing trend of the nuclear family system they don’t get to see each other as often. While the parents have numerous personal and professional commitments to fulfil and cannot spare enough time to take their kids to the grandparents frequently, however, they must look for ways to ensure the two spend quality time with each other often enough. Here are a few tips that can come handy in this direction:

  • If you cannot visit your parents often or are unable to stay back due to your professional commitments then you can drop your children for a couple of days or call your parents to stay over at your place.
  • Travelling frequently can be a hassle, however, that should not dither you from staying in touch. Make sure your kids speak to your parents regularly via phone or video call.
  • You can also ask your children to post hand-written letters and cards to their grandparents. This may sound a bit old-fashioned but it can certainly make a lasting impact and nurture their bond.
  • Sending gifts has become easier with the advent of e-commerce portals. Make your kids select gifts for their grandparents and send them on special occasions.

The life lessons that grandparents teach cannot be learned by reading any number of books or attending any class. Parents are the connecting point between grandchildren and grandparents and they must take it as a responsibility to ensure they keep this connection alive.

Grandparents Essay 3 (400 words)

Grandparents are known as the root of the family. They are experienced and knowledgeable and share their valuable life lessons to help the newer generations learn and grow. They serve their children and grandchildren selflessly and help them become better human beings.

Joint Family System: A Boon for the Kids

Here are a few factors that support this ideology:

In a joint family system when a child stays with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, he learns how to bond with different kinds of people. Such kids seldom have difficulty bonding with people when they step out as compared to those who just see their parents or domestic help for most part of the day.

  • Valuable Lessons for Life

When the kids are in their growing stage and need to be taught valuable lessons to help them understand life better, parents are often busy with their career and hardly get to spend quality time with them and teach them the nitty-gritties of life. Grandparents are far more experienced and often get to spend much more time with the kids in a joint family system. Children living in a joint family thus learn good moral values and other valuable lessons for life.

  • Broadens their Horizons

Children often tend to imitate us. When they stay in a nuclear family they often adapt the habits of mother or father and start behaving in a certain manner. However, staying in a joint family broadens their perspective. They come in contact with different people and learn how a single task can be done in different ways and choose the way they like the best rather than blindly imitating one.

  • Sharing and Caring

Though the child gets to enjoy the company of different family members living in a joint family system, he is not the sole point of focus. He understands that every big and small thing brought is not wholly and solely for him and is to be shared among the members. It thus helps develop the habit of sharing and makes him more sensitive towards the needs of others.

All the special occasions such as birthdays and festivals become all the more special when you celebrate it together.

  • Support System

Grandparents act as a great support system for the family. You can count on them anytime. As they grow old, they also require attention and care and joint family fulfils their requirement too.

The joint family system is said to be the best for the growth and development of the children. Though the concept is slowly fading away, some people still prefer it over the more popular nuclear family system for the aforementioned reasons.

Grandparents Essay 4 (600 words)

Becoming a grandparent can be one of the best feelings in the world. There is a special bond that grandparents share with their grandchildren and it grows stronger with time if nurtured carefully.

Tips for New and Expecting Grandparents

Grandparents are usually more excited about the arrival of a new born in the family as compared to the parents. If you are an expecting or new grandparent and are feeling nervous about taking up this new responsibility then the following information should help:

  • Extend Support

Your responsibility as a grandparent begins much before the arrival of your little bundle of joy. Extend your support to your children as soon as you receive the good news. Provide tips on how to take care of oneself and the child during that crucial phase and also give them the affirmation that you are there to guide and support them at every step. Make sure you keep your promise and extend your support whenever required.

  • Be Realistic

Even as you should be there to support your children during this phase and after the child is born, this should not force you to take major life-changing decisions such as leaving your job or relocating. Always remember, you can support the other person and provide love and care only when you are at peace and satisfied in your own life. Don’t stop being who you are.

  • Don’t Go Overboard with Shopping

Many grandparents get a bit too excited and tend to pick anything and everything that comes their way for their grandchildren. While your emotions are completely understandable, you must always act wisely when it comes to money matters. Go easy on shopping. Don’t buy stuff just for the sake of buying.

  • Establish a Healthy Relationship

Though you are super excited about the arrival of the new born, don’t forget that he has another set of grandparents too and they are likely to be equally excited at the news. Share your responsibilities with them rather than trying to nudge all on them or trying to do everything on your own. Communicate with each other, maintain a cordial relationship and do your bit to ensure healthy upbringing of the kid.

  • Don’t Force Bonding

It is understandable that grandparents wish to establish a special bond with their grandchildren. However, many go overboard with it. They begin to compete with others or force the kids to like them. This way you are more likely to portray a negative image in front of the kid. Just spend time with your grandchildren, take good care of them and let the bonding happen naturally over the time.

  • Maintain Contact

Maintain contact with your children and grandchildren if you are staying away. Call them often, visit them and invite them to your place to ensure you meet your grandchildren regularly and spend quality time with them.

  • Give Life Lessons

As your grandchildren begin to grow, take it up as a responsibility to inculcate good moral values in them. Share your experiences and stories with them to help them learn how to handle different situations.

  • Don’t Be Rigid

You have your own set of ideologies and possess a far better sense of right and wrong. However, this doesn’t mean you have to set stringent rules for your grandchildren. It is your duty to guide them; however, don’t be too rigid while dealing with them. Be flexible, listen to their ideas and bend rules whenever required.

Becoming a grandparent, especially for the first time, can be an overwhelming experience. Be calm, patient and don a positive outlook as you enter this new phase of life.

My Grandparents

Essay No. 01

Children adore their parents so what do they feel for their grandparents who are nothing but parents with a whole lot of icing! Forever patient, forever kind and forever spoiling, grandparents make children feel important and secure. My grandparents were all that and more.

As a child I was closest to my maternal grandfather. He would spoil me rotten, tell me stories, buy me candy, take me for walks, listen patiently to all that I had to say and most importantly, save me from Mom! I lost my paternal grandmother, unfortunately, when I was very young. She was the epitome of kindness, I was told. My paternal grandfather lived with my aunt in Canada and we saw him but once a year, gathered all his magnanimous gifts, said a solemn thank you and stayed away. He was a man of few words who had spent his life time toiling for a very large family (siblings and their families included). My maternal grandmother was strict and we always got into trouble with her. I lost my maternal grandfather when I was fourteen after which I got closer to both my maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. The former died a few years later but only after our lovely relationship blossomed. The latter remained my dearest friend, philosopher and guide and stayed with me till he was a hundred, two years ago. I really have been fortunate to be blessed, thus.

“What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience. humor, comfort, lessons in life and, most importantly, cookies.”

Essay No. 02

If you have grandparents, you are indeed lucky! I have two sets of them—my father’s parents, and my mother’s parents. My grandparents on my father’s side live with us.

My grandfather goes for a long walk in the morning and on the way back he picks up the milk bottles. My grandmother is busy in the kitchen since my mother goes out to work.

In the evening, we all sit down together and fell each other about the day’s happenings. Granny tells us interesting stories about her youth while Grandpa talks seriously with my father. I can’t imagine my family without my grandparents.

Once in a while, my mother’s parents visit us. You should see my mother then! She is all smiles, bustling about in the kitchen, making tasty dishes. She even forgets to tell me to study!

We all have a wonderful time, for granny always brings fantastic gifts and is full of life and laughter. She really loves us. Grandpa too, although quiet, is very affectionate. He is a wizard in Math’s and whenever he comes I ask him to teach me.

When both the grandfathers get together it is great fun listening to them. The grandmothers’ conversation deals with how good their son and daughter are, and the grandfathers talk of the freedom struggle and how the country’s standards are going down.

As I said before—you are indeed lucky if you have grandparents!

Speech on grandparents.

A warm welcome to all present. Today I am going to give a speech on Grandparents. Grandparents are our parents’ mother and father. Maternal grandparents are parents of our mother, while paternal grandparents are parents of our father. Whenever a kid is asked who pampers them the most, most of them would answer grandparents. Grandparents are most admired and loved by grandchildren. They correct us and scold us for our mistakes. They support the system of any family.

Role of Grandparents

Our grandparents are our storyteller, personal game center, favorite cook, polite teachers and a bunch of unconditional love. They have multiple roles to play. They are heroes for their grandchildren. Stories of their struggles and hardships always inspire the young minds for a lifetime.

They come to rescue their grandchildren whenever needed. Grandparents help us in developing dreams and imaginations. They nurture our spirit and encourage mental growth while giving us a sense of self-worth. They are cheerleaders and motivators.

Grandparents are a role model. Their actions speak greater than their words. The way we should behave in a positive perception of older people in our minds.

Grandparents offer us a wide range of knowledge, emotions, and experience then they did as parents. They are playmates and often are great spectators for our performances. They were strict with our parents but as grandparents, they are lenient. Often we are more comfortable talking and sharing with them than our parents.

They are nurturer as they support our emotional and social safety needs. With the increasing rate of divorce, teenage violence, overexposure to the unwanted culture at a young age, career demands of parents and other social issues, the role of grandparents in giving values is vital.

They act as spiritual guides for grandchildren. They give values and give spiritual rewards like compassion, peace, love, faith, joy, tolerance, being kind and gentle.

Also, they are caretakers in the absence of parents. When grandchildren are unwell or the regular child care is not available, they come as a great rescue. With parents working full time, children often spend some part of the time in daycare but the rest of the time grandparents are always ready to help out.

An Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents [PDF]

Grandparents are so awesome, are not they? today we are going to see an essay on time spent grandparents, and how I feel while I spend my time with them, so let’s dive into the essay.

Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents feature image

While all my friends were getting excited about the weekend that they would see their grandparents, I never understood them. To me, there was nothing to talk about when they were talking about their grandparents.

Not that I had no grandparent, but we just never visited them. All our weekend would be spent on outdoor activities like children’s sports as we wait for holiday camping.

We never had any story to tell about our grandparents. Well, my elder siblings used to tell me that they used to visit granny when they were young. Nobody told me why they stopped.

However, the stories my classmates would tell about their experience with their grannies made me curious, wanting to have a story to tell too. So I asked mum that she take me to see them. Unexpectedly, she promised to take me over the next weekend. What a fun moment did I have!

I guess mum had told my grandparents about the visit, so they were eager to see us. Everything was wonderful. The first thing that took my attention is the type of traditional food that granny made for us.

I won’t say that mammy does not make us delicious food, but then the food I took that day was friendlier to my mouth. I loved the fact that she entertained by being in the kitchen.

I now understand why all that my friend talks about when it comes to their grandparents is food. Well, they have other stories, but when it comes to food, everyone wants to talk.

The weekend gave me a break from the baked food that we are used to at home. My grandmother noticed that I was so entertained about the food and so she packed the rest for me. What generous granny!

Another thing that made my day was how my grannies were able to give me stories, some fiction, while other real-life stories. For the first time, I spent a whole day without thinking about where my tab was for games.

The stories were so fascinating with lots of lessons. Even for the ones that seemed factious, they would talk about is as though they were present when the scene was taking place.

I loved the zeal that they had. I realized that most of the stories that my grandfather had been more of war-related, while those that my grandmother had been more of family and religious related.

In of the significant thing that I learned was that at times things happens in life that at times can make you doubt whether you will come out of it and smile.

I also enjoyed playing around with my grandparent’s pets. Wow! I am still thinking about Petra, my grannies’ doggy. This dog would run from one end of the compound to another as we play around with my cousin’s ball.

I realized he used loved playing around with the ball as though chasing me but on a jockey ground. This took the better part of my day since the compound was fascinating. I am not a cat lover, so I didn’t mind about the pet cat whom some people would call pretty.

I loved the whole day at my grandparents’ place. If mommy makes a joke about going back, I think I will spend the entire night doing my homework to make the proposed day free.

I have not been able to stop talking about the day. Every time we are storing as a family, I tend to get attracted to the memories I brought home. I am hoping that I will get such a change soon.

The Role of Grandparents and Their Importance in Children’s Lives

  • by Gretchen Gatan Fragada
  • November 3, 2023

In today’s fast-paced world, the role of grandparents in the lives of children remains as vital as ever.

Beyond the traditional notions of extended family, the role of grandparents contribute an invaluable wealth of love, wisdom, and a unique perspective that can profoundly shape our children’s upbringing. As the saying goes, grandparents are the roots of a family tree ! And their influence runs deep, nurturing the young branches with their experience and unconditional affection.

The Role of Grandparents and Their Importance in Children's Lives

A Supportive Anchor

Grandparents serve as a crucial support system for both parents and children. They offer a sense of stability and reliability that is especially comforting during times of change or crisis. Like the postpartum period . Their unwavering presence can help children navigate the often tumultuous waters of adolescence, offering a safe harbor when needed most.

In a world that often seems to spin faster every day, with work and other priorities taking a toll, the slower pace and quality time spent with grandparents can provide a welcome respite. Whether it’s listening to stories from their own youth or simply sitting in silence. Children gain a sense of continuity and belonging that stems from this connection with their grandpa and grandma.

Willing Caregivers

Grandparents often serve as a priceless resource when it comes to providing free babysitting for their grandchildren! Their willingness to step in and offer their time and care is a testament to their deep love and commitment to the family.

As trusted caregivers, grandparents can offer parents a much-needed break! Whether it’s for a date night, a work commitment, or simply some time to recharge. They create a safe and nurturing environment where children feel at home, knowing they are cherished and understood. This invaluable support allows parents to juggle the demands of modern life while ensuring their children are in the best hands possible.

A Living History Book

Grandparents are living encyclopedias of family history, culture, and traditions. They bridge generational gaps, helping our children understand their heritage and learn from the past. Through their narratives, grandparents share the wisdom they’ve accumulated over the years, instilling a strong sense of identity and heritage.

From recounting family anecdotes to teaching time-honored recipes or customs, grandparents impart the essence of their roots. This connection to the past can foster a deep appreciation for family values, cultural diversity, and the importance of preserving traditions.

A Love Like No Other

One of the most profound gifts that grandparents offer is unconditional love. In their presence, children experience a unique, less-structured form of love that is unconditional and unburdened by the responsibilities of day-to-day parenting. This type of love is a sanctuary where children can be their authentic selves, free from judgment.

Grandparents are often more patient and indulgent, allowing children to explore and express themselves without fear. This nurturing environment fosters self-confidence and self-esteem, providing a critical foundation for emotional well-being and resilience.

Mentors and Role Models

Grandparents can play a role in shaping a child’s moral compass and values. With the benefit of life experience, they offer guidance, teaching important lessons and modeling good behavior. Their wisdom can help children navigate life’s complexities and develop a sense of empathy and understanding.

Grandparents often possess unique talents and skills that they can pass on to their grandchildren, whether it’s playing a musical instrument, gardening, or storytelling. These shared experiences create a sense of accomplishment and interests that deepen their bond.

The Role of Grandparents and Their Importance in Children's Lives

The role of grandparents in a child’s life is irreplaceable!

Their influence extends beyond the immediate family, connecting children to their past and imparting valuable lessons. As a wellspring of love, wisdom, and support, grandparents play an integral role in shaping the adults their grandchildren will become.

And in an era where the pace of life can be relentless, it’s essential to encourage and nurture the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren. The lessons they impart and the love they provide are gifts that will enrich the lives of generations to come. So, let’s celebrate the timeless treasures that are our grandparents and ensure that their place in our children’s lives remains a cherished and pivotal one.

Grandparents

Essay No. 01

They have been given the nomenclature/name of grandparents because, they are really grand. Grand in their cute and majestic appearances, grand in their magnanimous behavior, grand in their attitudes, and lo and behold, very grand in their love and affection.

Grandparents is the name given to the parents of one’s parents, and they are really the ones who pamper the children of the family. This also can be easily analyzed, they pamper their children and grandchildren out of proportion. This is because after a very long gap of time when their own children were small, now, they find in their homes little children to play with. They pamper their grandchildren more than they ever did their own because now is the time when they have all the hours of the day, at their disposal, free from all responsibilities. Now they have all the time to pamper, cajole, and make love to little children. When their own children were small, they had no time to waste on such cajoling. Besides all this, the parents being busy for the whole day have no time from their routines to see to the extra demands of the children and, this is where the grandparents enter the scene of the family.

Grandparents are such a solace to the children, who are gifted to them as the most loving members in the house. They provide the ‘all-important’ lap to lay the stressed body and head and of course experienced brains to give advice. With grandparents in the family, the children learn a lot more about life than otherwise. They learn to respect, not only their elders but all the old and infirm. They learn to help the weak, and to go all out to people who need any help. Thus the very presence of grandparents, gives the children a huge stock of humaneness, otherwise have missed upon. The stories narrated by grandparents give an immense pleasure to the children together with a deep insight into life, even if the children haven’t faced it yet. At most times, grandparents can be very good friends who play indoor games with the children, for which the parents have no time to spare. Above all advantages, the blessings of grandparents are so very interesting and inspiring that, the children really get a boost to work and work more and more. which they would Just as everything has two sides to it, so does the existence of grandparents in a family also has the other side to it.

The other side of the coin is that, their very existence can be really very damaging for the children. At times, the grandparents just cannot understand the trends of the changing times. When this happens they are bound to be a nasty experience for the children. When these same grandparents keep nudging at the children for whatever they do just quoting that it never happened in the earlier times or in their time, they offend the children beyond all repairs. They do not seem to realize that, between them and the children there is a gap of two generations, and, each generation is bound to be different. This strict attitude of the grandparents towards the children creates a wedge between the three generations living under one roof. These wedges can grow deeper with time, if the grandparents refuse to forget that theirs was a different generation. With the wedge becoming deeper there can be a break and this can be disastrous for both, the children and the family Thus, as is true of all things, there are advantages and disadvantages of living with grandparents. They are, on the one hand, a solace to tired bodies and minds, while on the other hand they can be the single cause of breakups in a family. It would be just wonderful if grandparents could see more analytically the present times and then guide the children and adjust themselves too. To strike a balance in three generations is no doubt difficult but, if achieved with the effort of all it can produce a heaven on earth, a home which could be an envy of all around, and home for others to emulate. Grandparents are a boon and can become a bane to a family. A suggestion for all would be one word – adjustment that is the key, yes, the master key to the prosperity in man’s life.

Essay No. 02

Many of us are fortunate enough to have grand-parents close by at time that we are born. In fact, when our mothers became pregnant to bear us, no doubt they must have turned to their parents, our grandparents for advice and assistance. This is probably because our parents were young and needed someone to hold their hands, someone who had been there before. Needless to say then, we owe much to our grand-parents.

The habit of helping to look after one’s grandchildren is only present in members of the human race. No other known animal on the planet seems to have this particular trend. Strangely also, the tradition of grandparents playing an important role in the birth and upbringing of grand-children seems to be a universal trend among humans.

All of us know grandparents as symbols of wisdom, they speak from experience and tell us how to go to where they have been. They may not be up to date in matters of science and other branches of knowledge but they would have been through the ‘school of hard knocks.’ It is grandparents who tell us that though money and other symbols of wealth are nice to have, the real values in life are of the non-material kind. They themselves had probably discovered this through a lifetime of pain and sorrow.

It is very unfortunate today that, as part of the modern life-style, we are losing contacts with our grandparents. It is just not wise at all, but it is happening all around us, that after five million years of evolution, we are now discarding some of the most beautiful aspects of being a human. Pushing grand-parents out of the scene is one of them. Many of them are being exiled in old people’s homes, where being deprived of something useful to do and of being loved and wanted, they waste away to early ends. One can only hope and pray that the trend will be reversed, if not for the sake of our grand-parents for the sake of the wisdom they have to offer all of us.

You will know what they teach you and how they provide emotional and psychological support to other family members.

The essays will be helpful in your school/college essay writing, debate and speech giving competition.

My Grandparents Essay for Class 12 in 400 Words

Introduction:

Hello, my name is Siddhant, and I am in class 12. Today, I want to tell you all about my wonderful grandparents. They are really significant to me, and I am fortunate to have them in my life.

Who are they?

My grandparents are my mother and father’s parents. My maternal grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa Sharma’s, and my paternal grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa Joshi’s. Each of them is special in their own way, and together they form my family.

Grandma and Grandpa Sharma’s:

Grandma Geeta Sharma is an excellent cook. When I visit their house, the aroma of excellent food fills the air. She makes the finest cookies and always has a jar of them ready for me. Grandpa Keshav Sharma, on the other hand, enjoys narrating humorous stories. He has a terrific sense of humor, and we often laugh together.

Grandma and Grandfather Joshi’s:

Grandma Rani Joshi is basically a walking encyclopedia. She is quite knowledgeable about history and offers me intriguing stories from the past. Grandfather Krishnakant Joshi is a handyman. He can fix nearly everything in the house. When something breaks, he is there to save the day with his tools and expertise.

Special times Together:

I enjoy spending time with my grandparents. We play board games, go for walks, and occasionally sit and speak. During the holidays, people tell stories of their own childhoods, and it’s fascinating to hear how things were different back then. They also teach me cool stuff, such as gardening and knitting.

Life Lessons:

My grandparents are not only enjoyable to be around; they also teach me valuable lessons. They emphasize the importance of hard effort, being kind to others, and never giving up on my dreams. They share their life experiences, which help me comprehend the world better.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, my grandparents are the best. I appreciate the love, knowledge, and joy they provide to my life. I know they cherish me, and I cherish them in return. Grandparents are like a treasure trove full of love and stories, and I am extremely fortunate to have mine.

My Grandparents Essay for Class 12 in 500 Words

Grandparents have a particular place in our hearts, like a treasure chest full with wisdom, love, and fond memories. My grandparents are very important in my life, and their presence has affected my perspective in many ways.

Early Memories:

My earliest memories are infused with the warmth of my grandparents. From the smell of Grandma’s freshly made cookies to Grandpa’s boisterous laughter, these memories form the cornerstone of my upbringing. Their home was a safe refuge, filled with stories, games, and affection.

Wisdom and Life Lessons:

One of the most valuable gifts my grandparents provide is their abundance of knowledge. They have withstood life’s storms and imparted essential life lessons that textbooks cannot provide. Their experiences, full of difficulties and victories, serve as a road map for me as I navigate the world’s intricacies. Their experiences teach me the value of resilience, kindness, and the beauty of simplicity.

Unconditional Love:

Grandparents are like the sun; they radiate boundless love. Whether it’s a reassuring hug after a long day at school or a soft smile at family gatherings, their affection is a constant source of comfort. In their eyes, I receive acceptance and encouragement, which gives me a sense of security and allows me to tackle life’s problems.

Cultural Heritage:

Another unique part of my relationship with my grandparents is our shared cultural heritage. They tell me stories about the past, including traditions, customs, and family history. These stories not only help me understand my ancestry, but they also teach me to appreciate the rich canvas of our family’s history.

Bonding Over Time:

As I become older, my relationship with my grandparents changes. From learning to bake Grandma’s secret recipes to having heart-to-heart discussions with Grandpa about life’s intricacies, our friendship becomes stronger with each new day. The satisfaction of spending quality time together builds long-lasting memories that I will take with me as an adult.

My grandparents serve as the threads that bring color, texture, and depth to the canvas of my existence. Their influence is tremendous, affecting not just who I am today but also who I hope to be. From the simplicity of childhood recollections to the complexities of life lessons, my grandparents are a source of love, guidance, and unfailing support. As I approach maturity, I carry their teachings in my heart, grateful for the privilege of having such extraordinary grandparents in my life.

Grandparents are the key to millennial parents securing generational wealth

  • Daphne Delvaux, an advocate for improved childcare, says parents with family nearby are better off.
  • The employment lawyer says it's a key factor in securing generational wealth.
  • Business Insider spoke with a mom who paid $4,000 monthly for a nanny and one whose parents do the job.

Insider Today

When Jessica Papi, a millennial, was trying to get pregnant, she discussed future childcare options with her mom, Carol Mooney.

They both knew that paying for a nanny or day care would significantly impact Papi and her husband's income. It would be particularly expensive since they'd often need 12 hours of daily cover.

"Mom said, 'I want you to have a career, so we'll support you with this,'" Papi told Business Insider, adding that her boomer parents were thinking of her finances and peace of mind.

The problem was that the would-be grandparents lived at least a two-hour drive from her home in New Jersey. After debating the pros and cons, they decided that Mooney and her spouse should leave New York and move near their daughter and son-in-law.

Papi said she and her husband were more financially stable because of her parents' support

Their new house could barely be closer. "It's literally around the corner and one minute's walk away," Papi, a finance worker, said.

Now the mother of a baby girl, the 38-year-old said she was extremely lucky to have such an agreement with her relatives. "We can have a nice family life without being too stretched," she said.

Some of the money the Papis save on childcare costs goes toward their retirement funds. They also plan to set up an investment account for their daughter.

"These arrangements are incredibly beneficial to parents," Daphne Delvaux , an employment lawyer who advocates for better childcare provision in the US, told BI.

She said parents such as Papi are at a significant financial advantage, particularly because of the rising cost of living. Those without voluntary childcare support from grandparents struggle to pay into their 401Ks and cover their mortgages.

Related stories

"It has the effect of being unable to keep money within the family constellation," she said, adding that many millennials are worse off than their parents at the same stage of life.

"Parents are forced to put money into childcare they would otherwise put into family assets."

Devika Tandon can certainly relate. She and her husband, who have an almost 3-year-old, needed to dip into their savings to pay for childcare.

The California couple paid a nanny $4,000 monthly for the first two years of their son's life. He's now in day care, which costs between $1,600 and $2,000 a month, depending on their needs.

Tandon doesn't have a 'village' to help with childcare

"It's expensive in Los Angeles compared to some other parts of the country, whether it's your groceries, getting a car or buying a house," Tandon said. She said hourly rates for babysitters in the city ranged from $20 to $35, although $20 was "uncommon these days."

Tandon said if her parents didn't live in Toronto, they'd do their best to ease the financial and emotional toll of outsourcing childcare. Their son's paternal grandparents live in New Jersey.

"It's a difficult situation," said Tandon, a lawyer who works up to 10 hours daily. "We had no choice but to pay an exorbitant amount for childcare because we didn't have family as a village to help us."

The 36-year-old said she'd feel more comfortable if relatives watched her toddler. "It's different when it's family," she added.

Delvaux, who primarily advocates for maternity rights at work , said parenting could be "suffocating" for people without ready access to their children's grandparents.

"It's a safety net that can catch you when you fall," she said. Moms have even told me they wouldn't have had children without their parents' voluntary availability."

Her cases in employment law have included women being fired or having to quit after running out of PTO for childcare emergencies. "They take a huge monetary hit, and it impacts career advancement," she said.

Delvaux wants the US government and private employers to address the childcare struggles of working parents

The mom of two said she spoke from personal experience. Her husband's family lives on the opposite coast in California, and her parents  live in Belgium . "My business would be at a very different level now if I'd had backup from my parents," she said.

She praised tax-funded childcare provision in parts of Europe , such as France, where many nurseries — known as "crèche" for kids aged up to three — are free or heavily subsidized. "In Belgium, government-run daycares take babies at three-months old," Delvaux added.

By contrast, she said the US system was failing working parents who were held back by expensive childcare. She hoped the government and private employers in American would fully recognize and address the crisis.

"It's at the root of many of the financial and societal issues of our time," Delvaux said.

Now, This Is What A Truly Supportive Grandparent Looks Like

Parenting reporter

“Grandparents can be powerful sources of family identity,” one expert told HuffPost.

Whether it’s a smiling face at school pickup or a favorite dish at mealtime, the support that grandparents provide gives children (and their parents) a solid, loving foundation that will shape the rest of their lives.

Some grandparents, however, go above and beyond. When we asked members of our HuffPost Parents Facebook community to share examples of the way grandparents had supported their families, they set an extremely high bar.

Dana Lopez described how her in-laws welcomed her family into their home, building an extension on their house to accommodate them, and have provided child care, including school drop-offs and pick-ups.

“They have gone above and beyond for years, and there isn’t a moment I take their support for granted,” Lopez said. “I’m at my dream job because of them, and my sons have wonderful relationships with their grandparents. I’m forever thankful.”

Denise Kinderling, a mother of four in Pennsylvania, described the time she was recovering from serious health issues and her parents took all four children under their wing for almost a month, taking them on vacation and arranging play dates. “Not only am I incredibly grateful to my parents, I literally could not do this parenting thing without them,” she said.

Sarah Peterson Rhine of Ohio explained that her family was able to navigate the chaos of the pandemic by having the kids attend “Grandma school” while both parents were required to report to work. “I don’t know how we would have gotten through that crazy time without Grandma and Grandpa,” she said.

Mary Anne McGory explained that her mother paid $1,200 a month for a year so that her daughter could access the gender-affirming health care she needed.

But it isn’t only large gifts of time or money that make a difference. While Anita Dalton’s in-laws were a huge help when they showed up with a new washing machine after hearing hers had broken, they also brought a memorable gift. “They saw our garden plants looking sad, so they brought some from their garden to make ours look more lively,” she said.

Here are some of the many ways to be a supportive grandparent, according to several experts.

Embrace this unique role.

A grandparent’s role is different than a parent’s. They won’t get the final say on matters like screen time limits or sleepovers, but this lack of authority gives them an irreplaceable role in a grandchild’s life by freeing the relationship from a certain degree of tension.

“For kids who might be having a tough time with mom or dad, grandparents can be a huge relief and source of support to listen to the child venting about parents or sharing information they would not normally share,” therapist Tammy Gold told HuffPost.

They also bring a wealth of knowledge. Grandparents “have intimate knowledge of not only the child but also of at least one of the parents, and they have a lifetime of parenting successes and mistakes from which to draw,” therapist Renee Zavislack told HuffPost.

“Every parent I have ever worked with in therapy wishes they could go back and redo the mistakes they made with their children — grandparents get this chance with grandkids,” she said.

This expertise extends to family history and cultural traditions, as well. “Grandparents can be powerful sources of family identity,” Kendra Thomas , a psychology professor at Hope College, told HuffPost.

“As children grow into adolescents, they need to understand their role in the larger family picture. Feeling a sense of belonging to a culture, ethnic group, and community is a strong protective factor for adolescents. Telling family stories, stories of their parents, or stories of the grandchild as a baby can provide a sense of self and family,” she said.

Ways to share cultural traditions might include making a recipe with a grandchild, speaking to them in a native language, or planning an event for the whole family.

Give parents a break.

Most families struggle to balance the demands of paid work, caregiving and other responsibilities. Even one hour of help from a grandparent can mean a meaningful reprieve.

“Whether it is with rides to and from activities or preparing snacks and meals at home, grandparents can pick up the slack that so often puts modern parents over the edge,” Zavislack said. “This help means not only that the children are taken care of, but that the parents are less stressed and more resourced for parenting.”

“Every parent I have ever worked with in therapy wishes they could go back and redo the mistakes they made with their children — grandparents get this chance with grandkids.” - Renee Zavislack, therapist

Create rituals of connection with each grandchild.

Even if a grandparent doesn’t live close by, they can create meaningful ways to maintain the bond with a grandchild. Gold suggested a phone or video call in which each person reports the highs and lows of the past week.

For a younger child, a grandparent might mail them stickers every week, while an older child might want to share daily Wordle results, Thomas said.

No matter the frequency of visits, grandparents can come up with a special meal, game or activity to enjoy with the grandkids, be it cooking, gardening or doing a puzzle.

These “touchpoints,” Thomas explained, will need to change as children grow: “Don’t hesitate to find different paths to them in different seasons of life. Children develop quickly, and what worked in 6th grade might not work in 7th grade.” She recommended that grandparents “find a new touchpoint in each season,” and “do not try to replicate the same touchpoint with another grandchild.”

If there are multiple grandchildren, they will appreciate any one-on-one attention. This could be as simple as getting ice cream after picking a child up from their weekly dance class.

Respect boundaries.

Being involved in family life “benefits kids, parents and grandparents if done with clear, healthy communications and expectations,” Gold said.

As in all relationships, it’s important to establish and respect boundaries. Gold recommended discussing “clear outlines of what is needed and not needed and start and stop times so that everyone is clear.”

Grandparents might agree to a certain number of hours of child care per week, for example, and feel taken advantage of if parents frequently come home later than expected. Likewise, parents might get upset if grandparents push bedtimes or bend the rules on screen time or snacks.

It is important that grandparents respect parents’ choices when it comes to parenting their children, and do not second-guess or criticize them, particularly in front of grandchildren.

Grandparents “indirectly affect the parenting of their grandchildren,” Thomas said, in ways that can be positive or negative.

“Grandparents can undermine their children’s confidence in their ability to parent (being harsh critics or passive-aggressive). But they can also be sources of incredible support,” she said.

Stay curious.

Things are different today than when grandparents were growing up and raising their own children. But in order to encourage communication and connection with grandchildren, it’s helpful to express curiosity instead of passing judgment when it comes to the things that matter to grandkids.

Social media or video games might be confounding, but instead of saying, “‘These games make no sense! Why would you want to play this?’ try, ‘Wow. I have never seen anything like this. Can you tell me how you play? What do you like best about this game?’” Zavislack suggested.

“Criticism kills connection, and curiosity builds connection,” she added.

Thomas encouraged grandparents to have faith that their efforts are making a difference. “Do not underestimate the effect,” she said. “If you consistently carve a path to your grandchild, they will notice. Just knowing the grandparent is in their corner, cheering for them, matters.”
