The goals of the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s PhD in Social Work and Social Welfare are to:

  • Prepare the future social work professoriate with a specific focus in the solution of social problems through rigorous scientific methodological and integrative, transdisciplinary social science inquiry.
  • To prepare leaders of the social work profession with expertise in social policy and social intervention that is based in rigorous scientific methods and theoretical and empirical inquiry.

The PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare is focused on developing scholars who are transdisciplinary experts (i.e., masters of a broad array of applicable methods not in a specific to a social science but drawing from an array of disciplines) with the education and training to understand, develop, and evaluate social interventions, including service systems and policies.  The PhD Program in Social Work and Social Welfare applies appropriate transdisciplinary perspectives to focus specifically on problems at the heart of social work: to promote human adaptation, social change, and social justice. The distinctive elements of the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare are its transdisciplinary perspective and its greater emphasis on the science of multi-level individual and social change and social justice in a diverse and pluralistic societal context.

The PhD program in Social work and Social Welfare trains students to be able to create and evaluate interventions designed to solve societal problems. As social work is an applied profession, the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare prepares students to discover new methods for helping people and society overcome the problems they face. Coursework aligns with this focus and the preliminary examination required for candidacy asks students to synthesize research on practice interventions in their area of research, critique it, identify gaps, and make suggestions on addressing these gaps.

Beginning in Fall 2024, the program will admit five (5) Social Work and Social Welfare PhD students to start in the Fall of 2025.

Please note that applicants can apply to both the doctoral program in Social Work and Social Welfare and the SSW Joint Doctoral program in Social Work and Social Science but must complete specific applications for each program. Students are encouraged to thoroughly review materials about both PhD program options to ensure alignment between the program(s) and their research interests and scholarly goals.

Blind musicians and teachers communicate through vibration using Canadian-made device

User straps device to ankle to communicate with partner through heel taps.

A PhD student in Ottawa has developed a device that allows blind and low-vision students to feel music cues, replacing the need to see them.

Instead of having to follow a conductor's baton, or a teacher's hand gestures during a lesson, music learners can receive instruction through a vibration in their right leg sent by the Tap-Tap device.

Leon Lu, the information technology PhD student at Carleton University behind the idea, says the wearable device is easy to use and cheap to make.

Two people wear paired devices around their right ankles. Then, by tapping their heels together in different patterns, they can send messages to each other.

"Imagine, kind of like a Morse code, but vibration," Lu told As It Happens host Nil Köksal. "What's really cool about that is that you can get real-time communication happening through discreet methods."

"The student can continue playing and they don't have to stop and actually discuss [the instruction], but they can still be in that moment and in flow."

Blind violin student communicates wearing vibration device on leg

The Tap-Tap device doesn't come with a set communication code or language. That language is set by the participants, which Lu says is both a limitation and advantage of the device.

Piano teacher Nora Bartosik echoes that.

Bartosik is a faculty member at Manhattan's Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School, a school for blind and low-vision students, which teamed up with Lu to test the prototype and provide his team with weekly feedback about the device.

She used the Tap-Tap device with one of her piano students for about two months earlier this year and says there was a learning curve.

  • Audible hockey puck could revolutionize the sport for blind players, say researchers
  • What does an eclipse sound like? This device lets blind people hear the changing light

"It kind of feels like a phone buzz," said Bartosik. "Actually, a little bit stronger."

"[My student and I] decided to focus on the things that I've been saying a lot in lessons.... We decided we would use the buzz to indicate that I wanted him to play quieter in certain sections."

As they got used to the device, they added more signals.

"Two buzzes might mean like get louder, you know, do a crescendo," she explained. "One long buzz would mean this or one short buzz would mean that. We kind of expanded the vocabulary as we went along."

An illustration demonstrating how the wearable haptic device called Tap-Tap works.

Chase Crispin, a blind musician and teacher in Lincoln, Neb., who consulted on the Tap-Tap project, said in a written statement from Carleton University, that "many people don't realize how much a musician is managing at once: posture, notes, rhythms, dynamics — the list goes on. For blind music learners, who memorize most of this, it adds even more layers."

Crispin said getting involved with the study was a way to "blend my own interest in technology with the needs I had as a blind musician."

A PhD student poses for a headshot.

Lu, who sings, plays guitar and is learning violin, said his passion for music and desire to be creative was part of the reason he took up this project.

He's surprised that a device similar to the Tap-Tap isn't already integrated into commercially-available devices, such as a smartwatch, and hopes that might be a possibility in the future.

Harrisburg University’s Charles Brumlik, PhD, Named a 2024 Fellow by the American Chemical Society (ACS)

Harrisburg University’s Charles Brumlik, PhD, Named a 2024 Fellow by the American Chemical Society (ACS)

uni geneva phd

HARRISBURG, PA  – The American Chemical Society (ACS) has added 37 new names to its roster of ACS Fellows in 2024, including  Charles Brumlik, PhD , corporate faculty and instructor in the  Master of Science in Biotechnology  program at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU). In addition to his corporate faculty role at HU, Dr. Brumlik is the Managing Director for  Nanobiz LLC , an international consulting firm focused on rapid product development in aerospace, biomedical, chemical, electronics, energy, food and beverage manufacturing, oil and gas, telecommunications, and other fields.

With more than 155,000 members, the  American Chemical Society  is one of the largest scientific organizations in the world. Only 30 to 50 members are selected to be named as ACS Fellows each year. According to the American Chemical Society, the ACS Fellows program was “created by the ACS Board of Directors in  December 2008  to recognize members of the ACS for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and the Society.”

“I am extremely grateful for being named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and for being awarded this distinction,” said Dr. Brumlik. “It’s an honor to be recognized for my decades of volunteer work helping STEM students to explore industrial careers and to move from school to their first job. This also includes over a decade of leading the Chemical Marketing and Economics Group of the ACS.”

Dr. Brumlik was nominated by ACS Fellow, Ping Furlan, and Doctors Sam Brauer and Robert P. Nolan. For Contributions to Science and the Profession, the nomination recognizes Dr. Brumlik’s “outstanding expertise in nanomaterials applications and commercialization; leadership at the intersection of science, intellectual property, and business; and mentoring hundreds of scientists to help solve humanity’s big challenges.” For Contributions to the ACS Community, Dr. Brumlik is cited for “outstanding ACS National and New York Local Section programs, including NASA symposiums and Leadership Awards; and a tireless commitment to mentoring early-career scientists in their first jobs.”

The nomination also notes: “Over the last 20 years, [Dr. Brumlik has] helped numerous high school, college, and graduate students to explore science and global business. With the ACS, CME Group, Nanobiz, Nanobiz India, and partner organizations, in addition to mentoring, Dr. Brumlik has helped young scientists to interact with professionals from the US, Canada, Europe, India, and Japan.”

Presently, Dr. Brumlik teaches biochemistry to graduate students at HU and lectures internationally to young scientists at companies and organizations such as Infosys, KPIT Cummins, Honeywell, Phillips, Reliance Industries, Bombay Textile Institute, and dozens of others. Dr. Brumlik also works with young STEM-focused adults on the autistic spectrum to support their rights of self-determination and respect, and has created patented visual aids for therapists.

The nomination is exhaustive in celebrating Dr. Brumlik’s many years of innovative research work, tireless mentorship, community advocacy, and unique contributions to organizations and events focused on building strong academia-industry ties. Above all, Dr. Brumlik’s career has centered on empowering young people – especially underserved populations – to pursue their dreams of landing valuable jobs in science and technology fields.

“As a longtime instructor in the various legal aspects of biotechnology and life science, I think very highly of Harrisburg University’s MS in Biotechnology program. It offers a unique curriculum that brings practical industry perspectives into the classroom. It upholds the HU tradition of linking the campus experience with seamless career preparation, meaning students usually get right to work in their field with employers of first choice. It’s an exciting time to study biotechnology and its applications, and this is one of the most exciting places to do it.”

Harrisburg University thanks Dr. Brumlik for serving our institution with distinction, and for advancing the cause of scientific literacy across the country and our world. We look forward to seeing where this next chapter takes you.

Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.
