My December Holiday Essay For Students

The winter holidays are an exciting time of year filled with fun traditions, tasty foods, and quality time with family and friends. Last December, my family and I took a holiday trip that I will never forget. In this essay, I will share some of the highlights from my December holiday. I will discuss our travels, the special celebrations we enjoyed, and what I learned from the experience.

Travel plans.

As part of our holiday preparations, my family researched different destinations to visit over our school break. After much debate, we settled on a one-week road trip along the coast of California (Topic Sentence). For the first part of our journey, we packed up our suitcases and snacks and embarked on an eight-hour drive from our home in Northern California down to Los Angeles (Transition). Hitting the road for long periods of time can be tiring, so we listened to Christmas music and audiobooks to pass the time and keep our energy up. Taking breaks to stretch our legs at scenic overlooks also helped the drive feel shorter.

Arrival in Los Angeles

Upon arriving in LA, our first stop was checking into our hotel for a few nights of exploring the city (Topic Sentence). We spent one afternoon at Disneyland, enjoying the festive decorations and riding our favorite attractions like the teacups (Example). On another day, we toured Hollywood Boulevard and snapped photos beside the handprints of famous movie stars at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Los Angeles was bustling with holiday cheer and offered the perfect mix of activities to start our winter getaway.

After a few enjoyable days in Los Angeles, we packed up and continued on to San Diego for Christmas Eve (Transition). What really stood out was attending midnight mass at a historic Spanish church near our hotel. Winter has been my favorite season due to some exciting reasons. Winter vacation in one of them. This vacation is not long like summer vacation, but it’s quite interesting. In this winter vacation, most of the time we need to remain busy with study, for the upcoming final examination.

Today I will share my winter vacation experience that I did on my last vacation in winter . I maintained a really tight routine to take preparation for my upcoming examination. My mother helped me a lot to do that. She helped me make my routine and guided me to follow that properly.

At that time, we visited one of my uncle’s houses in our city. It takes only a half hours to go there. I have a few cousins there. I love spending time with my cousins. They are amazing. Then we all went to our grandmother, who was living with another uncle.

We got a family reunion. That was absolutely amazing for us. Uncle Aunties were really happy to see us all. We played and eat together in the afternoon. Grandma shared a few of her interesting stories with us. We love her stories. Whenever we meet her, we force her to tell stories. Overall, that was a good vacation.

Winter Vacation: Essay (300 Words)

Introduction: Winter vacation is not that long or full of fun because of a few problems. But after all, it’s a vacation that comes with so much excitement. In my tight school schedule, I feel really bored and I don’t get enough time to meet my cousins. Winter vacation gives an opportunity every year to spend some quality time with them.

Sometimes I went to their place and sometimes they come. This year, I visited their place that was a fun moment. We enjoyed a lot. We are lots of cousins, when we meet together we enjoy a lot.  

Exam Preparation: I had my final examination ahead. So during the vacation time, I needed to prepare for the exam. That was really tough because it was hard to concentrate. But my mother helped me make a really interesting daily routine. I followed that routine and was able to complete and revise my syllabus within a limited time. Thanks to mom, she has been amazing in this vacation.  

Spend Time with Family and Cousins: Including study pressure, I had a great time with the whole family. It’s hard for me to spend that type of time with them, because of my tight school schedule. I need to attend school daily and have to maintain a hard routine. That’s why your cousins can’t meet often. Winter vacation gives us the opportunity to spend time together.

In my last vacation, I went to my uncle place and I have three cousins there. They were really happy to see me. My parents were also having a good time with my uncle and aunty. We spend lots of time with Grandma; she was sharing lots of interesting stories.  

Conclusion: That was an amazing and one of the best winter vacations in my life. I was really excited all the time.

Winter Vacation: Essay (350 Words)

Introduction: Winter vacation comes with so much excitement and relief for me. I get stuck in this time because of heavy study pressure. This vacation let me spend some quality time and get refreshed. Last year, I think I spend the most amazing winter vacation ever in my life.

Here I am going to share everything in detail. Though this time is pretty tough as a student, besides enjoying the vacation we need to prepare for our examination. That’s why I used to maintain a really tight routine to keep my study going on.  

So Many Festivals: This vacation has so many festivals. Especially Christmas and New Year eve. I was spending the last vacation in my grandparent place. They were living a couple of miles away from the city. That’s a very beautiful place.

I and my cousins love to go there and spend time with our grandparents. So to celebrate Christmas, we went there. I did a lot of shopping. I bought a gift for everyone. I was excited about meeting with all of my cousins. They joined us on the same day. I give all the gifts and got a few gifts too.

In the Christmas day, we wear a different beautiful outfit and enjoyed a lot. End of the celebration, we spend time with our grandparents. They love us a lot. Whenever we meet them, they shared so many interesting stories with us. This time, they did share. I enjoyed a lot.  

Winter Morning: Winter mornings are very special there. We woke up very early in the morning. And then we went for a morning walk. There are so many beautiful gardens; it’s amazing to walk there. My mom and Aunties were busy cooking several types of food in the morning. Food is one of the most interesting things in the vacation.

We all know winter is the best for fresh vegetables and so many fruits. The place was near the countryside, and that’s why that was easy for us to collect fresh vegetables. Besides these, they used to make so many types of Pithas and we drink date juice every morning.  

Conclusion: After spending that amazing time, I came back to the house last week. I tried my best to maintain my study routine in that period, and it was succeeded to do that.    

Winter Vacation: Essay (400 Words)

Introduction: Winter is my favorite season due to a few special reasons. This season comes with cold and freshness for me. I feel really comfortable at that time. The winter vacation is also another thing that I love about this season. Though this is not a long vacation, I enjoy a lot with my friends, family, and cousins. We used to make a family trip, family reunion at this time.  

Christmas and New Year Celebration: The Christmas and New Year celebration is one of the most important parts of winter vacation. These two major festivals happen on vacation time. It becomes a great opportunity for everyone to get together and enjoy a lot.

In the last vacation, we celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Eve in one of my uncle’s house. We all cousins get together there and had a really great time. We cousins don’t have enough opportunity to meet often, that’s why the vacations are like blessings to us. When we all get together, we spend real quality time.  

Grandparents Stories: My grandpa and grandma are the most amazing people. They are still so strong and we love spending time with them. Whenever we visit them, they shared so many stories with us. I love ghost stories especially. Grandma knows lots of scary ghost stories. We sat together at night and hear her stories. I never feel bored spending time with my grandparents and my cousins. They are really awesome.  

Family Time: Spending time with family is important. But everyone is busy nowadays, that’s why we need to find vacations and other holidays to meet and greet. In last winter vacation, I got an opportunity to meet with my uncles, aunties, and cousins. I didn’t want to waste that chance.

I told my father and he was agreed with me. We finally decided to spend the vacation in uncle house. The whole big family came into one place and had so much fun together. I loved the whole time that we spend together. Family is a really important part of our life.  

Conclusion: Overall, that was an amazing vacation for me. I won’t forget that vacation ever in my life. I wish to spend that type of time with my cousins and the whole family . I love winter and winter vacation a lot. At that time, I can forget everything about my studies and all.    

Winter Vacation: Essay in 500 Words

Introduction: I love winter vacation a lot. There are so many reasons behind this. The biggest reason is I find so much relief and refreshment from my boring and busy life. There is a really tight school schedule that I need to follow. That’s why I don’t have enough time to spend with my cousins or grandma.

Winter vacation let me have some extra time and enjoy with the entire family. Here, I am going to share my experience of the last vacation that I have finished a couple of weeks ago. That was amazing and unforgettable.  

Exam Preparation: I have to prepare for my upcoming final exam. That’s why I made a study routine, took a few books with me. That routine helped me complete the syllabus and I was pretty much succeeding to follow the routine during the vacation. The whole credit goes to my mom. She was really strict about my study.  

Family Trip: In the last vacation, our whole family went for a family trip. My uncles, cousins, aunties, and grandma came to our house. We spend two days together. And then we leave for a family trip. Our destination was about 300 kilometers away from our house.

My father booked a resort for us. We reached there with our own car and entered into the resort. The resort was amazing. The natural view, that I love most. It was near a big tea estate. A few minutes walking distances there is a beautiful hilly river.

The place was like a dream to me. I was really exciting. There were some amazing little family events. We stayed there for two days. We had a bar-b-q party on the final night together. The resort manages everything for us. Grandma came out with us; we drive a little away from the resort.

We did a little picnic on our own. That was amazing. We took a camera, food with us. We walked into the small river and get wet. The river was very tiny, but the water was really cold and clean. Hilly rivers are full of rocks, that I love most. The rocks are really beautiful and there were lots of colorful rocks.  

Meeting Cousins: Meeting with my cousins was the most important part of the vacation. We all are students and need to stay the busy whole year. We don’t get enough opportunity to meet each other. This winter vacation let us be everyone together. I think my cousins are my best friends. We are lots of cousins and pretty much at the same age. We love spending time together. On this vacation, when we were staying in a resort we went for a picnic our own. That was an impressive experience for me. We all were excited.  

Conclusion: That vacation was really amazing that I won’t forget ever in my life. Especially the family trip was the most interesting part of the vacation. Our entire family never enjoyed that much together ever. I wish to spend every vacation like this.

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.

My winter break went by very fast. I was disappointed to come back to school already. But I did enjoy my break! I did many fun things over break. I hung out with friends, went downtown and partied for New Years Eve, and snowboarded at Cascade Mountains and Alpine with friends.

First thing I did over break was hang out with friends. We went Christmas shopping together. We also went to the movies, out to lunch, and drove around. It was fun to be with friends almost every day. We slept over at each other’s house every day. One day at my house then theirs.

Next thing I did was go to downtown Chicago for New Years Eve. We went to Bacci’s pizza for dinner. Then rode the red line back to Millennium Park to see the fireworks. It was cool out that day not cold about 45 degrees. After that, I went home and got the car then went to a friend’s party at his house, partied all night til the morning. Wow I was so tired.

Next thing I did over break was snowboarding at Alpine Mountains and Cascade Mountains. I went with my friends we all drove together. It was so much fun. We snowboarded all day long to make our money’s worth! Then we went to the Olive Garden for dinner. Best memories of winter break. I would like to go back again soon.

Overall, my break went very good, stayed safe and out of trouble. Completed all of my work for school. I was even able to do homework and go out sometimes. Now I have told you about how much fun I had going snowboarding and New Years Eve, and hanging out with friends. It was a blast and great way to kick off to 2011 !

But the book really is much more than that.

Yes, the volume, which Daichendt edited and was published by Intellect Books, is centered around the San Diego-based company started by Bobby Ruiz that celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

But throughout its 256 pages, “Tribal and the Cultural Legacy of Streetwear,” under Daichendt’s watchful eye, examines how Tribal Streetwear has, since 1989, straddled the intersection of community, art and culture. The pieces in the book take a deep dive into how it derived inspiration from and has left an indelible impact on a variety of subcultures, including graffiti, street art, tattoos, lowriders, music, skateboarding, surfing and breaking.

Tribal Streetwear “has strong Chicano roots in its aesthetic and since its inception in 1989, the impact of its designs continues to balance the precarious act of being relevant and responsible with its resources,” writes Daichdent, who, in his own words, “uses Tribal as a lens for examining the history of streetwear and the subcultural aspects that make it such an exciting development in cultural studies, art history and sociology.”

Daichendt, the Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Point Loma Nazarene University, talked about the book, its inception and the far-reaching impact of Tribal Streetwear.

Q: You recently came out with a new book, “Tribal and the Cultural Legacy of Streetwear.” How did this book come about?

A: Street art and graffiti have long been a subject of academic study for myself. As I have investigated writing projects, the larger concept of street culture has become a subject of interest which includes many subtypes, situations, locations and participants. This revelation has expanded the subject matter I could study and led to some exciting exhibitions, articles and experiences. While the subcultures of surfing, skateboarding, lowriding, breaking and tattoos within Southern California are not entirely new to me, I had never explored them as academic subjects. This expansion of my own work coincided with meeting the CEO and co-founder of Tribal Streetwear, Bobby Ruiz, who further enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the history of street culture in San Diego and beyond.

Q: You have had a long relationship with streetwear — specifically San Diego’s own Tribal Streetwear — as art and how it intersects with community and culture and art. How difficult was it to try and capture that in this book?

A: Streetwear is an international phenomenon that ranges from local skateboard shops to international fashion houses like Louis Vuitton. Tribal Streetwear is celebrating 35 years in San Diego, and it would be impossible to capture the depth of their involvement in the community and the range of products and experiences they have created over three decades. My goal was to further the academic conversation about streetwear and use Tribal as a lens for facilitating that conversation.

It’s difficult to comprehend how the articles of clothing produced by Tribal — including shirts, pants, jackets, hats, and a variety of fashion accessories — can be symbolic of so many different subcultures that are distinctly rooted in their communities. It’s a massive accomplishment, and it’s what distinguishes Tribal as an authentic organization that “keeps it real.”

Q: You were able to gather many voices in this book. How did you go about choosing whose voices to include?

A: The book would be limiting if it was just one voice. As an art historian and critic, I have a particular way of analyzing information so it was important to me to include researchers from a variety of fields, including criminal justice, sociology, literature, history, Chicano and Chicana studies, film, philosophy, and music studies. In addition, there are personal histories and reflections from practitioners that have a history with Tribal Streetwear. This diversity of experiences, thought and writing styles created a well-rounded portrait of streetwear in popular culture.

Q: Once you started working on the book, were there any surprises along the way?

A: Tribal Streetwear is so much more than a streetwear brand. They are embedded within the street culture. It’s one thing to say that and it’s another to see the T-Star logo tattooed on someone’s skin, affixed to their lowrider, or incorporated into their personal artwork. Tribal represents a community, personal identities and is a way of life. The fever and passion are inspiring and rewarding to witness. I knew it was important, but I was surprised at the depth of emotional commitment to Tribal and its place within so many different types of people.

Q: What was the most rewarding part of this project?

A: I feel like an honored guest in each of the subcultures represented in the text. As a professor, one could feel they are studying a movement from the outside, but in each case, I was quickly adopted because of my interest in the subject.

Q: The most challenging?

A: The term “streetwear” caught stride in the 1990s and was generally understood to be in alignment with the various subcultures that Tribal represents. The clothing style also evolved to include several variations that were reflective of the country or city it was from, but the base of T-shirts, hats and sneakers remained the same. Yet, not all street wear companies are the same and many lose their connection and inspiration to the street culture. Bobby shared early on with me that there is a version of streetwear that is born from a keyboard and another that is from the streets.

Q: The book clocks in at more than 250 pages. Did anything end up on the cutting-room floor? And if so, was it hard letting go?

A: There are thousands of photographs, personal accounts and individuals that contributed towards the story of Tribal Streetwear. However, the academic focus of the text helped us concentrate on what was essential.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from this monumental book?

A: Streetwear is a core aspect of street culture and is arguably the most widely seen characteristic and expression of this concept.

I hope readers realize that street culture is a massive concept that has had a huge impact on culture and that there is creativity and arts production happening in a big way on the streets of our communities. San Diego specifically has a strong museum and gallery culture but some of the best work is happening outside the walls of institutions and takes the shape of a lowrider, an article of clothing, or in a tattoo shop.

I hope each of these chapters collectively furthers our understanding of how and why Tribal is able to be more than a clothing company to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Tribal is uniquely San Diego from its Chicano roots to the range of artists they support to create progressive designs for their products.

The Tribal T-Star logo serves as an excellent representation of the many folks that make up the brand and the company’s philosophy and focus on culture. Made up of several “T” letters that lock together like a puzzle, the logo showcases a star in the negative space. A metaphor for the various aspects of street culture and family coming together to form something special.

With the season changing, I am all prepared to enjoy my winter vacations. Winters are welcomed at my house and we all love the season.

Even though it is cold, there are lots of fun that happens during this season and we all thoroughly enjoy spending winter vacations in the company of each other.

Last winter was really memorable for me. To begin with, during the first week of vacation, I went snowboarding along with my friends. It was so much of fun that we all enjoyed so much.

After snowboarding for a few days, we switched to skiing. Wow!! It is really fabulous. Though we were not experts, we learnt our way and we had a guide who taught us how to ski correctly. It was so great and exciting to be there. Since there is heavy snow during winters, skiing is perfect.

Apart from playing all the time, sometimes due to heavy snow, we may not be able to step out. At this point of time, we together as a family take our shovels and buckets and dig out a path way to reach out. Though it does take some time and effort, we do as a team work, the entire family enjoys it. We make games while we do the work, to make it more interesting and creative, and sometimes we also make the lovely snowman from the snow that we shovel out.

We play in the snow and make snowballs and have fun by throwing the snow balls at each other. By then it would be Christmas time and it is so lovely to watch every house with burning lights and lovely decorated windows, all in the midst of snow.

Celebrating Christmas, with so much snow is great and we went to our Aunts place for Christmas last time. With plenty of gifts received, so much of yummy food prepared, Christmas really was one among a memorable event for all of us.

Soon after Christmas, we all got prepared for New Year celebrations and welcomed the New Year with all good spirits and prayers.

I look forward to spend a similar winter vacation, in the forth coming vacations too.

American voters, including many Harvard students, will once again face the possibility of reactionary backsliding and threats to fundamental rights. Closer to home, we are keenly aware of the threats to free speech on campus. While this semester will bring renewed challenges to and debates concerning those fundamental rights, we are hopeful that study groups will remain a source of vibrant, productive, and gratifying discussions on Harvard's campus. In that spirit, this semester's cohort of Fellows will bring in critical perspectives from the varied worlds of governing, policymaking, polling, reporting, and campaigning to equip students with the tools necessary to create a better tomorrow. IOP Resident Fellows are fully engaged with the Harvard community. They reside on campus, mentor a cohort of undergraduate students, hold weekly office hours, and lead an eight-week, not-for-credit study group based on their experience and expertise.

Betsy Ankney Ankney is a political strategist with over 15 years of experience on tough campaigns. She has been involved in campaigns and Super PACs at the national and state level and played a role in some of the biggest upsets in Republican politics. She has been an advisor to Ambassador Nikki Haley since 2021, serving as Executive Director for Stand for America PAC and most recently as Campaign Manager for Nikki Haley for President. After starting with zero dollars in the bank and 2% in the polls, the campaign defied the odds, raised $80 million, and Nikki Haley emerged as the strongest challenger to Donald Trump. Ankney served as the Political Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 2020 cycle. She advised senate campaigns across the country, working directly with candidates and their campaigns on budgets, messaging, and fundraising. Prior to her work at the NRSC, Ankney managed multiple statewide campaigns, including Bruce Rauner for Governor in Illinois and Ron Johnson for Senate in Wisconsin. For her work on Ron Johnson’s race, she was named “Campaign Manager of the Year” by the American Association of Political Consultants for 2016. Ankney got her start in politics at the 2008 Republican National Convention and served in various roles at the Republican National Committee as well as on multiple campaigns and outside efforts. She serves on the boards of The Campaign School at Yale and The American Association of Political Consultants. She is from Toledo, Ohio and attended Vanderbilt University.

John Anzalone Anzalone is one of the nation’s top pollsters and messaging strategists. He has spent decades working on some of the toughest political campaigns in modern history and helping private-sector clients navigate complex challenges. He has polled for the past four presidential races, most recently serving as chief pollster for President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign. In that role, he helped develop the messaging and strategy that drove paid communications, major policy rollouts, speeches, and convention thematics. He has also polled for the campaigns of President Obama and Hillary Clinton, and has helped elect U.S. senators, governors, and dozens of members of Congress. Anzalone works with governors across the country, including current Governors Gretchen Whitmer (MI) and Roy Cooper (NC). He polls regularly for the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Senate Majority PAC, and AARP. With more than 30 years of experience in message development and strategic execution, he has been called on by key decision-makers, executives, and CEOs to provide counsel in a changing world and marketplace. Alejandra Y. Castillo The Honorable Alejandra Y. Castillo was nominated by President Biden and sworn in as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development on August 13, 2021, becoming the first women of color to hold this position. Ms. Castillo led the Economic Development Administration (EDA) between August 2021-2024 through an unprecedented moment of growth and opportunity. As the only federal agency focused exclusively on economic development, she guided EDA’s the implementation of over $6.8 billion dollars in federal funding, powering EDA and its mission to make transformational placed-based investments to support inclusive and equitable economic growth across America. Spanning over two decades of public service and non-profit work, she has served in three Presidential administrations --Biden, Obama and Clinton. Her career has also included a drive to shattering glass ceilings and providing inspiration to multiple generations of diverse leaders. Castillo is an active member in various civic and professional organizations, including the Hispanic National Bar Association, the American Constitution Society, as well as the Council on Foreign Relations. Castillo holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook; a M.A. in Public Policy from the Lyndon B. Asa Hutchinson Governor Asa Hutchinson is a former Republican candidate for President of the United States. He served as the 46th Governor of the State of Arkansas and in his last election, he was re-elected with 65 percent of the vote, having received more votes than any other Republican candidate for governor in the State’s history. As a candidate for President, Hutchinson distinguished himself as an advocate for balancing the federal budget, energy production and enhanced border security. He also was a clear voice for the GOP to move away from the leadership of Donald Trump. Hutchinson’s time as governor is distinguished by his success in securing over $700 million per year in tax cuts, safeguarding the retirement pay of veterans from state income tax, shrinking the size of state government, creating over 100,000 new jobs and leading a national initiative to increase computer science education. The Governor’s career in public service began when President Ronald Reagan appointed him as the youngest U.S. Attorney in the nation for the Western District of Arkansas. In 1996, he won the first of three consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his third term in Congress, President George W. Bush appointed Governor Hutchinson to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration and later as the nation’s first Undersecretary of Homeland Security for Border Protection. He is a former Chairman of the National Governors. He grew up on a small farm near Gravette. He and his wife, Susan, have four children and seven grandchildren. Governor Hutchinson is currently CEO of Hutchinson Group LLC, a security consulting firm.

Brett Rosenberg Rosenberg is a foreign policy expert who has served in the White House, Department of State, and Senate. During the Biden Administration, Rosenberg was the inaugural Deputy Special Coordinator for the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, President Biden’s and the G7’s flagship program designed to meet infrastructure needs in low- and middle-income countries. At the White House, Rosenberg served on the National Security Council as Director for Strategic Planning, working on shaping and realizing approaches to issues spanning from international economics to Western Hemisphere engagement, as well as helping to write the National Security Strategy. Prior to her service in the Biden administration, Rosenberg was Associate Director of Policy for National Security Action, where she remains a senior advisor. Rosenberg began her career in Washington as a legislative aide to then-Senator Kamala Harris, where she advised the senator on a range of domestic and economic policy issues. Rosenberg is a Nonresident Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and her writing has appeared in outlets including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, and McSweeneys. She received her A.B. in History from Harvard College and her PhD (DPhil) in International Relations from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar.

Eugene Scott Eugene Scott is a host at Axios Live, where he travels the country interviewing political and policy leaders. He was previously a senior political reporter for Axios covering 2024 swing voters and voting rights. An award-winning journalist, Scott has spent two decades covering politics at the local, national and international levels. He was recently a national political reporter at The Washington Post focused on identity politics and the 2022 midterm election. Following the 2020 presidential election, he hosted “The Next Four Years,” then Amazon’s top original podcast. He also contributed to “FOUR HUNDRED SOULS: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019,” which topped the New York Times’ bestseller list. In addition to writing, Scott has regularly provided political analysis on MSNBC, CBS and NPR. Scott was a Washington Correspondent for CNN Politics during the 2016 election. And he began his newspaper career at the Cape Argus in Cape Town, South Africa not long after beginning his journalism career with BET News’ “Teen Summit.” Scott received his master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and his bachelor’s from the University of North Carolina Hussman School of Journalism and Media. He is a D.C. native and continues to live in the Nation’s Capital.

How I spent my winter vacation? – Short Essay

Today was the last day of my winter vacations and they were just like the winter season. Very cool! The day the vacations started, I came back home from school and told my parents about the vacations.

I knew they wouldn’t take me out for a picnic or a camping as they never used to do so on any vacations. So, I went up to my room and started cribbing upon how boring my vacations are going to be.

My cribbing didn’t last long as I heard a knock on my door. It was my mom and she was glowing like the sun of summer in the season of winter! I could see the happiness sparkling from her face! She held both my shoulders with all her might and shook me and said, “Uncle Ram just came by and said that he is going out of town with his family for vacations and their farmhouse is vacant. So we can go there and stay for the holidays!” The moment I heard these words from my mum, rains of happiness started happening inside of me! And I couldn’t help but dance in these rains!

Since then, I never rested, not for a moment. I had to pack all my stuff. I had to take the best of this vacation as it was my first one and could well be the last. I dressed like a shepherd as I wanted to have the complete feel of being a farm boy. We were driving our way to the farmhouse. The scenic views and natural hues were a treat to enjoy throughout the journey. It gave me a soothing relief from my stress and tension. We finally reached after a long journey of four hours. Everyone was tired except me. I was thrilled to reach there! The moment the car stopped, I jumped out and started exploring the place. There was a huge wooden farmhouse where we would stay. The place was surrounded by tiny patches of lands. Some were covered by crops and some by trees. The place was a paradise! There was also a river flowing by the farm where I used to go every day and swim and play in the water. We used to lit a bonfire at night and dance around it! This was the winter vacation I’ll remember and cherish for a long time.

Suffolk shouldn't rush to rebuild two failed dams

This guest essay reflects the views of Enrico Nardone and John Turner, executive director and senior conservation policy advocate, respectively at the Seatuck Environmental Association, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving Long Island wildlife and the environment.

The dam failures that occurred in Blydenburgh County Park and Stony Brook last month were a sobering reminder of the mounting impacts of our changing climate. In the wake of the storm’s devastation, calls to quickly repair the dams are understandable; the lost ponds were valued community resources that have been part of the landscape for hundreds of years.

However, we urge public officials to carefully weigh all factors before deciding on a path forward. While there may sometimes be unique justifications to rebuild dams, there are generally strong reasons — fiscal, resilience and ecological — to instead allow the streams to return to their natural free-flowing state.

In most cases, the broadest public interest is served by letting streams run free.

Regarding fiscal impacts, the cost of rebuilding and maintaining a dam greatly exceeds the cost of letting the stream flow. Dams — originally built to power gristmills, harvest ice, grow cranberries, etc. — create silt in which grows submerged aquatic vegetation, requiring ongoing costs to maintain open water, pond views, and opportunities for boating and fishing. Such efforts, which usually involve dredging or herbicides, are expensive and rarely more than temporary "solutions."

In terms of resiliency, healthy waterways are more able to adapt and support resilient landscapes and communities. This includes withstanding storms that a changing climate will increasingly bring to Long Island. Put simply, naturally flowing streams are more resilient than those that are dammed and constrained. These streams and their associated wetlands and floodplains are "natural infrastructure" that provide cost-effective resiliency by capturing, retaining, and filtering stormwater and modulating floods.

Dams, by their very nature, create resiliency risks by impounding millions of gallons of water upstream from homes, businesses and public infrastructure. The risk of dam failure and the high cost of guarding against it is a major reason dams have been coming down across the country. Long Island’s relatively small dams generally don’t rise to the level of being considered "high-hazard," but our recent experience might change the way we think about the risk.

From an ecological perspective, there are rarely good reasons for repairing failed dams. Before Long Island’s waterways were dammed to form mill ponds, they flowed freely for thousands of years. These streams were an integral part of our coastal ecosystem, providing a critical avenue for the movement of sediments, nutrients and wildlife between fresh and saltwater. Significantly, dams block the movement of migratory fish, including alewife and American eel, that provide important forage for a wide range of species, from whales to osprey to striped bass. Dams create warm-water habitat that favors nonnative species, and degrade the overall ecological health of rivers and streams.

While a failed dam initially leaves a muddy mess, it doesn’t last long. Within months, as the pond basin dries, the natural restoration process commences. Native plants grow and form a riparian meadow that buzzes with the activity of insects and birds. Invasive species sometimes have to be managed, but if left alone such sites eventually become native riparian forests. These woodlands provide important wildlife habitat, fight climate change by sequestering carbon, and increase resiliency by buffering winds and holding on to soils.

Rebuilding failed dams may occasionally make sense, but in most cases allowing rivers and streams to revert to their natural state will help make the region and its coastal ecosystem more healthy, resilient and sustainable.
