Technical Writing: What Is it and Why Is it Important in Marketing?

Technical Writing: What Is it and Why Is it Important in Marketing?

We all know content creation is significant for businesses striving for a respectable position in the market.

A website with appealing content will easily attract customers who can engage better with your brand. And technical writing is an essential genre of writing in every company.

Technical writing plays a crucial role in the development of any project plan or instruction manual. Here’s everything you need to know about it and how you can make it benefit your business.

What Is Technical Writing?

Technical writing is entirely different from traditional writing and does not involve any flowery language or complex vocabulary. The Society of Technical Communication has defined technical writing as a type of content that exhibits any of the following qualities:

  • The content should be about any technical topic such as medical procedures, computer applications, or other tech stuff.
  • Any communication via web pages, social media platforms, or help files can be regarded as technical writing.
  • Content providing instruction on any technical topic like how to do something can be categorized as technical writing.

These types of content are provided by a tech writer whose primary job is communicating with the audience about any technical topic. And the information provided is primarily for users facing technical difficulties and looking for a speedy solution.

Understanding the Characteristics of Technical Writing

Every piece of technical writing in marketing follows a set of characteristics that differentiate them from other forms of writing. These contents are very different from academic or creative writing. And if someone is to create technical marketing content, they need to include these characteristics in the content.

Technical writing aims to put forth information clearly so that the user does not face any confusion or misunderstanding. Therefore, a technical content writer uses clear and concise sentences.

2. Straightforwardness

The content in this style does not involve using any literary devices. The language used is direct and to the point.

3. Precise and easy to understand

Technical writing always focuses on the object and the steps, and the writers should not beat around the bushes. These kinds of content aim to solve the technical problems people face daily, so it should not have words that are hard to understand.

4. Detailed

The content should be detailed and informative, just like in the textbooks. This style is necessary because this information is sought by people looking for detailed and informative guides on any subject.

5. Structured and skimmable

Technical writing follows a very structured style of writing. One of the reasons behind this is that the form of writing involves step-by-step instructions for the readers.

Furthermore, the information should be presented so that the users can skim it and quickly find the information they seek. Every tech writer should use descriptive headings and include an index for the reader’s convenience.

Technical Writing as a Key Marketing Tool

A lot of companies are using technical writing in marketing to expand their footprint in the global market. This type of writing is mostly done in the help section of companies.

It is aimed at helping them understand how a product or service works and how they can troubleshoot issues they face. Here are a few ways in which brands can use technical writing.

1. Branding

Guides and problem-solving content are some of the best ways to interact with the audience. A company can use technical writing to create such content, which can then be paired with the brand’s personality. This will ensure that the content is a clear reflection of the work of the company.

2. Building trust

Companies that can thoroughly describe their product can market them properly. For instance, if a customer intends to buy a smartphone from a brand, they would look for a detailed product description. And if this description is unclear and coherent, they are more likely to turn away. Therefore, technical writing is required by companies to build trust with their customers.

3. Create a community of customers

A close look at different technical content present on the web will reveal that the comment section of these pages drives user engagement. The comment sections can also be analyzed to find out what users think about the product and services offered by the company. The company can then use this information to better market its product.

4. Market the product better

Technical writing can be used as an effective marketing tool when they are SEO optimized . These informative articles can convey your message better as the users will get detailed information about the product. Therefore, a company that is looking for ways to increase its sales figures can use technical marketing content.

What Is the Purpose of Technical Writing in Marketing

Technical writing aims to present informative content for users to interact with. These types of content are aimed to increase engagement by providing content that is in long form and answers customers’ complex questions.

A technical content writer can create an informative content piece that can generate interest. Simply, marketing can be termed as generating interest and making customers pay attention to any specific product.

Some of the basic goals of technical writing in marketing are:

● To promote newly launched products and services of a company.

● Generate content that can provide a target audience with extensive information on a subject.

● It acts as a supplement for any marketing or promotional content.

● To make customers aware of the USP of any product by giving a detailed and informative description of the product.

● It strengthens the company’s position in a particular industry or niche by providing solutions to customers’ problems.

● Technical writing’s primary goal is to promote awareness about any particular technical concept. The detailed and structured content can be understood by any user, making it easy for companies to communicate to their customers.

● It also helps companies reach a wider audience by driving more users through the comments section discussions.

● Companies can build their credibility and visibility among customers by providing all the information about their products and services. They aim to provide all the information about their product to the customers, making everything transparent about the product.

Some Examples of Technical Writing

Some of the most common examples of technical writing are:

● Corporate documents like employee handbooks, business reports, and orientation manuals for new employees.

● User manuals of different products.

● Educational manuals.

● White papers and case studies for academic purposes.

● Press releases used for making any specific announcements.

Wrapping Up

Technical writing is the best way to generate high-quality content for any website. It engages audience in a better way and improves credibility of a company. Moreover, companies can use it to solve customer queries by creating content that can troubleshoot problems a customer might face while using a product.

Companies can look at online reviews about their product and find out their customers’ common problems. A technical content writer can then use this information to create engaging content with step-by-step instructions on how to solve these problems.

Technical writing is used by companies that need to explain their services to their customers. Most tech companies primarily use them as they constantly need to create content that can explain their products and troubleshoot issues in them.

Technical writing is a kind of writing that focuses more on explaining key concepts. These are structured and are written to explain how a product words. Moreover, it can also provide detailed steps that users can follow to solve any technical issues they face with the product.

Many writers often avoid technical writing because there is a very limited amount of work available in this genre. However, companies that require a lot of technical documentation constantly need a technical content writer.

Technical writing can be used in marketing to promote a product or service to the customers by providing information on them. By doing this, customers become aware of the product’s USPs and can get more interested in it.

Yeah, but...

I need writers who actually know what they're talking about..

Ours do. They include seasoned industry veterans in the fields of engineering , IT, programming, design, and technical project management. Let’s just say, they’ve seen a bug or two. These dedicated tech pros have plenty of experience explaining specialized programs, software, and concepts.

Verblio’s technical content creators are dedicated, though maybe not as dedicated as Pat Vaillancourt of Quebec, who holds the world record for most URL’s tattooed on his body (10,012 of them to be exact) .

How does it work?

Writers in the technical industry find you and create quality, customized content for your business or blog. Most clients get their first piece of content to review within 72 hours to one week for more technical topics. That means you’ll have traffic-driving content live on your website in less time than it takes to crack the average password.

You can review your drafts and accept, decline, or request unlimited edits at no extra cost. Take a look at the controls   here .

How do I tell your writers what I want?

You know your business better than anyone, but our team is highly skilled in technical writing, digital marketing, and SEO. Verblio’s onboarding and content request processes help you communicate intent, audience, voice, and personality. You can lay out your exact specifications to ensure your content speaks to exactly the right crowd.

Do I pay per article?

You build a monthly plan based on the technical content you need—including number of articles, word length, and any optional services . Verblio subscriptions are flexible, month-to-month plans with no contracts. See pricing .

Can you write for my specific industry niche?

Most likely. The tech industry is incredibly broad, and we’ve built out a strong team of diverse and talented writers to cover it from every angle. We welcome the challenge of unique and specialized tech topics.

Our writers spend a lot of time in communities like Stack Overflow, Hacker News, Product Hunt, and Kaggle. (Where they go on the dark web, however, is none of our business.)

Who owns the content?

As soon as you buy a content piece from Verblio, it’s exclusive to your blog or site. You own 100% of the rights , and our writers can’t submit the piece to any other client—ever.

Does that mean you check for plagiarism?

You bet. To get technical, all content submissions are rigorously screened for potential plagiarism using our platform’s native screening algorithm. In addition, our community of writers is encouraged and incentivized to report plagiarism. We’ll never pass along a piece of content that is not unique to our customer.

What topics should I cover with my content?

You should ask for whatever topics you think will capture your audience . Our writer pool is highly diverse and incredibly bright. As tech junkies themselves, they’re always excited to tackle new and intriguing topics.

What's your favorite programming language?

We believe all program languages have their merits and no single language is superior to another.

But, Python is the best.

Can I see some sample content?

Of course! We scattered links to some great samples throughout this page.

When you’re done checking those out, you can see even more here, in this practical proxybroker tutorial . (Bonus: this piece also contains a sample summary video from our new Verblio Vids service )!

Technical Writing Services

Goodman Lantern combines experience and expertise in our Technical Writing Solutions. We craft concise and compelling technical content that does not fail to impart information and engage audiences.

What is Technical Writing?

Technical writing involves relaying complex information and simplifying difficult ideas into easy to understand copy. Technical copywriting aims to inform and educate the target audience on a particular topic, process, or case.

The various forms of technical writing include case studies, business reports, technical brochures, user manuals, product catalogues, and white papers. Apart from these traditional formats, how-to videos, tutorials and other knowledge-based videos, and podcasts also fall under technical content.

Because of the varied nature of technical content, nearly every business in every industry uses it in some form or another.

The advantage of technical copywriting is that it allows businesses to delve deeper into relevant subjects and offer valuable content to their customer base. It is a tried and tested way of showing your expertise and command over industry affairs. Technical writing can undoubtedly position you as a credible source of information and a true thought leader.

Benefits of Technical Writing Services

Most businesses are veritable experts in their own field. They are well-versed with the latest trends, nuanced market challenges, and business processes. However, it can be difficult to translate their knowledge into a form that makes it easily digestible to its audience.

This is perhaps the most important of the many benefits that Technical Writing Services offer to businesses. Seasoned technical writing consultants bridge the gap between you and your target audience. We have the industry knowledge and the writing skills to convey technical information in clear and concise copy.

Moreover, a technical writing agency understands the needs of different sections of your customer base and creates technical content tailored to each of them. This kind of targeted and attentive content creation process is further bolstered through professional presentation and speedy delivery.

Hiring technical writing services also ensures efficiency and scalability. Technical writers can generate large amounts of technical content without compromising on quality. We can create a steady stream of accurate, impartial, and detailed technical content that meets your marketing needs.

Thus, technical content writing services ensure you get consistent and exceptional technical content and free up your time to focus on other priorities – like growing your business to even greater heights.

Why do you need technical writing services?

It shows the breadth of your industry knowledge and professional capabilities. Technical content writing services help you achieve that goal in a systematic and efficient manner.

5 Technical Writing Services Compared

Published on Jun 09, 2022 in writing 6 minute read

The range of technical writing services is increasingly vast. Today, there are thousands of potential categories to choose from, each with its own unique tilts, effects, and ROI. And whether you need a little or a lot, you’re bound to feel overwhelmed while hunting for the right option.

Even once you’ve narrowed down the type of technical writing service you want, you’ll still need to find a way to bring everything together. Not every team has an in-house expert (or an employee with specific technical writing skills), which is why picking an external partner is critical for bringing it all together.

If you’re in the technical writing market for any reason, you need to pick a service that has your needs in mind. Let’s take a gander through the different types of technical writing available, as well as some of the things you can expect from each type.

Technical Writing Options

It’s not enough to say that you need ‘ technical writing .’ These days, it’s important to understand the phrase ‘technical writing’ for what it is: a massive umbrella term that encompasses dozens of varieties and variations of writing.

There are five major types of technical writing services to consider:

  • Documentation: From user manuals to walk-throughs, documentation includes any kind of technical writing that focuses on sensitive software information. It is often used to help new users become acquainted with a certain program, and address any questions or concerns with internal teams. Keep in mind that documentation is rarely if ever used for content marketing purposes.
  • Technical Marketing Content: The goal of this type of writing is to capture leads with actionable, valuable, and informational content. This may include comparison posts about different kinds of software , guides to blogging platforms , or even marketing tips and resources . The ultimate goal of technical marketing content is to position yourself as an industry expert, building trust and boosting sales in the process.
  • Landing Pages: If you’re trying to reach a technical audience with very specific lingo, regular copywriting just won’t cut it. Technical writing for landing pages provides detailed information that decision-makers may need to move forward with a sale. This includes specific acronyms, functions, or processes that speak directly to your audience’s needs.
  • Tutorials: Similar to technical marketing content, tutorials teach your readers how to accomplish a project, complete a task, or build an application. This provides a great deal of value to your target audience and creates lasting value both on and offline.
  • Blog Posts: Contrary to popular belief, blog posts are most certainly a type of technical writing. Depending on your field or vertical, you could use blog posts to disseminate technical content and thought leadership at scale (and for every specific audience). The more niche your blog content is, the better it will perform.

Your company may just need one of these technical writing services, or it may need two or three. In either case, it’s good to familiarize yourself with the purpose and function of each. Who knows: you might end up needing all of them someday!

Comparing 5 Technical Writing Services

Now that you’re more aware of the different types of technical writing, you can start the process of picking a provider that works alongside your needs. We didn’t rank these in any particular order, but we did start with what we feel has the greatest amount of technical expertise for growing startups and tech brands.

Draft.dev - Technical Marketing Content That Scales

Offering nothing but technical writing and content marketing , Draft.dev curates a wide variety of authentic technical writers from around the globe. All tutorials, blog posts, and marketing content are aimed directly at software developers, data engineers, and DevOps pros – all of which may be interested in partnering with your technical solutions.

Apart from technical writing, we also provide:

  • Social media collateral
  • Keyword research
  • Community research

With Draft, you’ll get ready-to-publish blog posts once a week depending on your plan. Only pay for content if you’re 100% satisfied, backed by our consistent quality and style that continuously impresses our technical clients.

We prefer to remain streamlined and specific in our work, extremely focused on our goal of delivering value-driven technical writing. While we currently don’t offer documentation, executive ghostwriting, or content strategy, we’d be more than happy to point you toward providers we feel are a good fit.

Any questions? Feel free to book a call .

EveryDeveloper - Technical Content Strategy

Most developers don’t want or aren’t interested in traditional marketing – something EveryDeveloper understands extremely well. This agency sources technical writers with a variety of backgrounds to create driven, knowledgeable, and opinion-driven content.

According to the website, EveryDeveloper currently offers writing for:

  • Thought Leadership

Today, EveryDeveloper is mostly focused on technical strategy, landing pages, and content action plans. The writing provided is at a lower volume than other agencies like Draft.dev, and is best for smaller organizations. However, if you’re ready to start focusing on the strategic side of technical writing, this is absolutely a great place to start.

Owen Media - PR For Tech Companies

PR is a vastly underappreciated element of the average tech company. At Owen Media , the goal has been to hybridize PR with other elements of the marketing cycle to create a holistic approach. Press releases are used alongside analytics relations and media tours to bring credibility and brand authority to high-tech organizations.

Apart from their public relations services, Owen Media provides a selection of additional writing services:

  • Technical ghostwriting
  • Executive authorship
  • High-level or advanced technical writing

Owen Media leans heavily into the marketing side of technical writing. If you’re looking for more internal content or documentation, you may need to partner with a secondary agency.

Documentation - ZivTech

Documentation is a primary focus for ZivTech , a Philadelphia-based agency with an impressive roster of past clients. Apart from their design, development, and strategy services, ZivTech uses in-house writers to compose extremely detailed documentation work. They currently use HTML5 to create up-to-date guides alongside your team, ensuring that no one is left behind during the development process.

To date, the company offers documentation support that includes:

  • User guides
  • Product manuals
  • Release notes
  • Product installation guides
  • Walk-through demos

Again, bear in mind that ZivTech does not offer any technical marketing writing (although documentation can be used for such a purpose). Their service is best for assisting internal or external teams with detailed walk-throughs of software usage – which is critical to just about every technical industry.

Jono Bacon - Technical Communities

Last on the list (but most certainly not least), Jono Bacon provides high-quality writing services to industries in technical communities. And when we say ‘communities,’ we mean actual online communities. Forums, dev blogs, and other types of online communities are the sole focus of Bacon’s expertise.

Jono offers services that include:

  • Community Management
  • Developer Workflow and Relations
  • Innersource and Internal Community Management
  • Public Speaking Engagements

Keep in mind that Jono Bacon doesn’t offer any tech marketing, nor does he specialize in other types of technical writing services. But if you’re looking for an outstanding resource with an enormous amount of experience building technical communities, this may be the perfect option for you.

Choosing The Right Kind Of Technical Writing

In the content industry, knowing what you want and need is key to a successful outcome. As you start narrowing down what you’re looking for, you’ll want to weigh the potential pros and cons of each writing service.

Ask yourself:

Will you need additional technical writing services in the future? If so, you may not want to choose just one platform with a singular focus. You’ll save more money in the long run (and have fewer headaches) if you choose a service that scales alongside you.

How much are you willing to spend on your technical writing services? Some platforms list prices right from the get-go, while others have specific or customizable quotes. What’s the scale or timeline of the technical writing you need? If you choose a smaller service, it may take several months to get where you want to be. Small agencies may produce a limited amount of content per cycle, which reduces how fast branded content can reach the market.

There’s a lot of thought that goes into a technical writing partnership, no matter what type of content your business is looking to secure. As you narrow down your potential list of providers , be sure and take all the time you need to ask questions, evaluate options, and choose the best possible path forward.

If Draft.dev is right for your technical writing needs, just give us a call ! We’re always jazzed to chat about tech writing – and we’d love to learn more about how we can help. Talk soon!

Technical writing is writing about a particular topic that requires direction, instruction, or explanation. It involves communicating complex information in a clear and concise manner to those who need it to accomplish a task or goal.

Usage: Technical documentation is used in technical and occupational fields, such as computer hardware and software, architecture, engineering, chemistry, aeronautics, robotics, finance, medical, consumer electronics, biotechnology, and forestry.

Types of documentation: User guides, installation guides, configuration manuals, system administration guides, reference cheat-sheets, disaster recovery plans and procedures, data sheets, quick start-up guides, release notes. application programming interface (API) guides, training manuals, factory acceptance procedures and processes and workflow.

You need an auditory component, you need a visual component, and then you need things that, I think TimelyText has quite a bit of expertise, is developing a curriculum based on what is trying to be accomplished. The pain-point that TimelyText solved for Kymanox is having very professional, very experienced learning and development experts to weigh in and develop a curriculum that starts to look more like playing a video game than the worst-case scenario, which is you’re stuck reading a pile of SOPs. What TimelyText is able to do is tap into their network and bring in the most relevant people, the most relevant experts. You’re only as strong as your network, and TimelyText’s network has proven strong thus far … TimelyText has been a valuable partner for Kymanox.

marketing technical writing services

TimelyText was able to provide us with the kind of people who could sit with our engineers and translate for them, into real language. … They were able to add value and ask the right questions to put themselves in the shoes of the user, which is exactly what we wanted to help develop better documents. It was an additive thing for me; it was not just our engineers helped rewrite the documents, but the folks from TimelyText that we had working on the project were able to make them better than we would be able to ourselves.

marketing technical writing services

TimelyText is quite simply the best. They are great people who truly value relationships, and they’re my go-to spot for sourcing quality talent.

marketing technical writing services

I’ve been fortunate to work with them in many capacities and am ashamed I’ve not done this previously. TimelyText is a staffing company but not your average ‘people mill.’ They actually know the folks they bring to your door. As a lead and manager I worked with them to build a team’s capability. As a vendor I’ve provided services to a client of theirs, and, I’ve been on their staff as a consultant to one of their many clients. Every person that came from them was a fantastic skill fit, which puts the exclamation point behind this next sentence. They take the time to get to know their customers and understand their needs – and they also REALLY know business holistically or they’d not be able to hit the mark so regularly. As a vendor to a customer of theirs, they stayed in touch with me weekly to make sure I was taking care of them in a way that was TT-approved. Outside of doing a favor for their client TT received nothing from this. THAT’S customer service. Positively outrageous customer service too. As a consultant, they’ve only brought me leads that were perfect for me. NO TIME WASTED. 5 rock-finger rating.

marketing technical writing services

I have been really pleased with the TimelyText team. They have never disappointed. Whether it was staffing that they have sourced or project-based work they have delivered, they have not disappointed. I think one of the strongest testaments to the quality of staff they have sourced for us is the number that have been subsequently offered full-time positions.

With TimelyText’s attractive rates, talented resources and strong commitment to success, the staff at TimelyText was able to help us meet our training and documentation needs. We were implementing a large, complex application and TimelyText was able to deliver high-quality and comprehensive training materials to ease the transition.

marketing technical writing services

I originally worked with TimelyText when I was a Documentation Manager at Nortel Networks. They helped staff my department with highly qualified technical writers. They have an innate ability to handle complex project initiatives for all types of technical writing venues, able to effectively dissect the task at hand, while retaining a keen focus on the underlying requirements. Both Ronnie and Adrian are highly qualified professionals with a broad knowledge base and exceptional analytical skills. They facilitate strong relationships with stakeholders and peers, and are very enjoyable to work with.

Abrigo first partnered with TimelyText in 2019 when we began investing in professionally developed materials to train our clients on how to use the Abrigo software solutions. TimelyText provided us with two instructional designers who joined us first as contractors and then moved to full-time employees as we saw the value in their work. They continue to be integral members of our Implementation team. When a need arose last year to formalize product guides for some of our business lines, we again reached out to TimelyText for support because of their expertise in technical writing.

Our partnership with TimelyText has enabled us to serve our own clients more effectively, and we continually get positive feedback on the quality of the content. I also love that our “content shared services team” are constantly growing themselves in the latest trends in adult learning. They bring that passion to us so that we can better serve our clients.

TimelyText has been a dependable and responsive vendor for Allscripts Education Services. Their highly skilled professionals have helped us produce high-quality eLearning for our clients. They screened candidates to ensure we interviewed only the best. I would recommend TimelyText for other learning organizations as a vendor of choice for instructional design resources.

Back in college, I always expected to go into the technical writing field when I graduated. I took a couple of different technical writing classes, and my LinkedIn description for the longest time included the phrase “Prospective technical writer.”

Of course, I ended up getting a job as a marketing writer instead, and here we are. But there’s more overlap between my expected job and my actual job than you might think. That overlap comes down to an area called technical marketing.

Technical marketing can be very important, especially for businesses in more, well, technical industries. But what exactly is technical marketing, and why does it matter? That’s what we’ll cover on this page. We’ll go over the following topics:

What is technical marketing?

Technical marketing includes any kind of marketing materials that focus on detailed, technical elements of a product or service.

Whereas regular marketing might focus on more introductory concepts that the average person could understand, technical marketing dives right into the nitty-gritty of the thing, using lots of industry jargon and complex language.

It might seem like technical marketing is counterintuitive because it could just end up confusing people. And it’s true that technical marketing isn’t always the appropriate route, but there are cases where you should use it.

In many cases, your leads will already know a lot about your industry, so they don’t need you to break down basic concepts for them — they need you to demonstrate your expertise and talk to them in detail about your offerings.

This is especially true in business-to-business (B2B) industries, but it can also happen for business-to-consumer (B2C) companies.

Technical marketing can take many different forms, depending on your industry and your audience. Sometimes, you might use technical marketing in regular marketing materials like website articles.

Other examples of places you could use technical marketing include:

  • Instruction manuals
  • Software programs
  • Detailed help articles
  • Product diagrams

These are all areas where the subject matter will only be useful if you get into the technical details. If you’re trying to assemble an electronic product, you don’t want to feel like you’re reading a top-of-funnel blog post — you want language that makes it clear exactly what you need to do.

4 best practices for technical marketing

So, what does it take to create a good technical marketing strategy? How can you do technical marketing the right way?

Below, we’ll cover four best practices for using technical marketing, including:

  • Know your audience
  • Be an expert in your industry
  • Blend technical and marketing elements

Keep reading to find out more about each one!

1. Be concise

The first thing to get right when creating technical marketing materials is to be concise. This isn’t the type of marketing where you should use lots of flashy words or vague statements — technical marketing should be streamlined and to-the-point.

When people engage with technical marketing, they’re not doing it to hear generalized statements about the quality of your products or services. They’re there to learn very specific information about how to do very specific tasks.

You know when you look up a recipe online, and you get annoyed by having to scroll through someone’s whole life story before you can find the list of ingredients? That’s what it would be like for your audience if you were to fill your technical marketing with fluff instead of getting down to brass tacks.

Don’t let your marketing be like those recipe pages!

2. Know your audience

This is kind of a cardinal rule for marketing in general, but it’s especially important when using technical marketing: Know thy audience. Here’s the thing with technical marketing — it’s essential to know exactly how much knowledge your audience has about the topic at hand, as well as what knowledge they don’t have.

You don’t want to overestimate or under estimate your audience. If you overestimate them, you’ll end up throwing a level of jargon and detail at them that they’re not equipped for, which will quickly overwhelm them. But if you underestimate them, you’ll come off as though you’re talking down to them.

It can be easy to err too far in one direction or the other when using technical marketing, so be sure to really nail down whom you’re writing to when you create technical marketing materials. You can do that by looking at existing customer data and straight-up asking your customers what they’re looking for.

3. Be an expert in your industry

Expertise is always good to have when creating marketing campaigns. But it goes up to a whole other level with technical marketing.

That’s because with technical marketing, your audience often also has expertise in — or at least in-depth knowledge of — the subject matter. They already know enough about your industry that they’ve now worked their way down to advanced technical knowledge about it.

In other words, technical marketing requires you to be an expert among other experts. You must maintain a much deeper knowledge of the subject matter than your audience if you want them to continue to listen to you. For that reason, make sure you’re always learning more about your industry and staying ahead of the curve.

4. Blend technical and marketing elements

At the top of this list, I noted how your technical marketing should be a lot more concise than other types of marketing. And that’s true. But having said that, bear in mind that it is still marketing . That means that while you should avoid inserting a bunch of fluff, you can still include certain marketing elements.

So, how do you do that? While you might be communicating detailed, jargon-filled information, you can still choose things like what tone you use, what word choice and phrasing you implement, and how you tie that technical info back to your business.

By optimizing your technical marketing to fit your brand, you can ensure that it’s still doing the vital job of leading people toward becoming leads or customers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here you’ll find the most frequently asked questions and answers about technical writing.

What is technical writing?

Technical writing, often crafted by a skilled technical writer, encompasses the creation of user manuals, technical reports, software documentation, and any content that explains a product’s or process’s intricacies. Whether software applications or hardware documentation, a professional technical writer is crucial in making complex information accessible.

How do technical writing services differ from regular writing services?

Technical writing services specialize in producing technical content that demands an understanding of both the subject matter and the art of simplifying complex topics. A technical communicator possesses these unique communication skills to explain intricate details in an easy-to-understand manner. On the other hand, regular writing services might focus more broadly on content types like digital marketing or general articles.

Why is professional technical writing crucial for businesses?

Professional technical writing ensures that users can easily understand and operate a product or service, enhancing customer satisfaction and reducing support costs. A proficient technical writer bridges the gap between intricate products and end-users, ensuring clear communication and minimal misunderstandings.

Do all technical writing companies offer documentation services?

While many do, especially those where the primary role of the technical communicator is to create extensive documentation, it’s essential to confirm with the specific company if API documentation or other technical writing tasks are within their purview. what is technical writing

What Is Technical Writing?

What is technical writing, and how does it fit into your content marketing strategy? Businesses with specialized products and services typically need to hire technical writers to create customer-friendly documents.

One motivating factor for this is that you can reduce support costs and enhance the client experience through easy-to-follow guides and manuals.

Simplifying sophisticated concepts for audiences of different knowledge levels is a specialized task. Technical writers transform material often considered dry into engaging content that informs, attracts, and retains customers.

Technical writers apply their deep understanding to convey complex information to a defined audience. They write user guides, case studies, white papers, blogs , marketing materials, and other types of content.

Here’s everything you need to know to incorporate technical writing into your content marketing strategy, including where to hire technical writers and the types of content they generally create.

Technical Writing vs. Business Writing

What distinguishes technical writing from business writing? Technical writing is a subset of business writing focused on tech products, services, information, and ideas.

This type of writing is unique because the writer needs specialized knowledge of the industry, product, or service they are writing about. So, technical content tends to be a lot more hands-on than general business writing.

A technical writer needs a comprehensive knowledge of the tech. They should be able to speak to what it does, its applications, how to leverage its features and benefits, and how to avoid common pitfalls in use or implementation.

The job of the technical writer is to ensure that less technical readers understand the information. This requires savvy translation and communication skills.

Technical Writing Examples

Marketers often ask, “What is technical writing, exactly?” Here are some specific examples of technical writing:

  • User guides and manuals
  • Installation guides
  • Troubleshooting guides
  • FAQ sections
  • API documentation
  • White papers
  • Case studies
  • Technical reports
  • Technical specifications
  • Design documents
  • Test reports
  • Training materials
  • Online help systems
  • Journal articles
  • Research papers
  • Grant proposals
  • Medical package inserts
  • Patient information leaflets
  • Informed consent forms
  • Product descriptions
  • Service level agreements
  • Standard operating procedures
  • Annual reports
  • Business plans
  • Marketing materials for specialized and technical content
  • E-learning content

Below is a deeper look at a selection of these content formats. The ones most relevant for your business will depend on your industry and products.

User Guide and Manuals

The most recognized form of technical writing, user guides and manuals provide step-by-step instructions on effectively using a product. From smartphones and coffee machines to software applications, well-crafted user guides and manuals increase customer satisfaction and reduce customer care inquiries.

FAQ Sections

An FAQ section provides a buffer that protects customer care from some of the most common user questions. Technical writers can help companies organize these sections to address customer concerns and provide straightforward answers that help users troubleshoot or understand a product or service.

API Documentation

For software developers, API documentation offers guidelines on effectively using and integrating with a software’s application programming interface. This documentation facilitates seamless interaction between software components, helping developers create robust and efficient applications.

  • White Papers

White papers are in-depth reports on specific topics, often used in the tech and business sectors. They provide a detailed analysis and present findings, often proposing solutions to a particular problem.

Technical Reports

Technical reports comprehensively account for a particular research or project, detailing the methodology, findings, and conclusions. These reports simplify and organize complex ideas so others can understand the discovery and follow the project or experiment’s progress.

Online Help Systems

Online help systems are embedded within software applications to guide users through installation and operation. Whether through tooltips, pop-up windows, or interactive guides, these systems provide real-time assistance, making the user experience smoother and more intuitive.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

A cornerstone in industries like manufacturing and healthcare, SOPs provide detailed instructions on performing specific tasks or operations to ensure consistency and safety. They meticulously outline the steps for specific tasks or operations, so workers know what to do.

While distinct in its purpose and format, each document shares the common goal of making complex information understandable and actionable for its target audience. Whether you’re a consumer, a professional, or a tech enthusiast, technical writing makes it easier to use the products and services in your business and life.

Skills To Look for in Technical Writers

Technical writing is a specialized field. The right writer needs the technical knowledge to understand your product, software, or service, plus the communication skills to translate that information into an audience-appropriate document.

Here are the skills you want to see when you hire technical writers.

  • Technical knowledge

Collaboration

  • Audience insight
  • Digital tools
  • Critical thinking

A good technical writer needs to convert technical information into simple, readable, and error-free content for readers. They should provide samples with the correct style, tone, and format for your specific technical documents.

Research skills are essential to solid technical writing. Technical fields evolve constantly, and each audience needs to be addressed according to their understanding and perspectives. Skilled technical writers have strong research skills.

Technical Knowledge

Many technical writers have a passion for technology or have worked in the field before becoming writers. A sound understanding of the underpinnings of the systems or concepts they write about allows them to craft easy-to-read documents that consumers and others can digest.

Technical writing often involves collaboration. For example, if they are writing a guidebook or user manual, they may collaborate with the development and marketing teams during the project. In addition to being skilled writers, they need communication, listening, planning, and organizational skills to collaborate effectively.

Audience Insight

Understanding the audience and tailoring the document to their level of understanding and skill is essential to effective technical writing. Writers must demonstrate an ability to identify what the target audience wants to know and deliver accordingly.

Digital Tools

Technical writers use digital tools to create and deliver user-friendly documentation. Some of the top tools include:

  • Word processing software
  • Version control software, such as Git or SVN (Apache Subversion)
  • Documentation generation software, such as Document 360 or Adobe FrameMaker
  • Screenshot and screen recording software
  • Image editing software
  • Collaboration tools

Using the right digital tools allows technical writers to create, track, deliver, and update documentation.

Empathy allows a technical writer to convey information that resonates with readers . This ability to see from the reader’s perspective helps them craft informative, user-friendly, and relatable content. This human touch can make technical documents more accessible, reducing user frustration and enhancing user experience.

Critical Thinking

Technical writers often encounter complex topics that require a deep understanding and the ability to distill them into straightforward, concise, and coherent content. This requires them to analyze information, determine its relevance, and present it logically and systematically. Critical thinking helps them organize and deliver information so it’s easy for the target audience to comprehend.

How To Hire Technical Writers

Hiring a technical writer is about more than finding someone who can write. You need a professional who can translate complex technical jargon into understandable content. Here are insights to help you hire technical writers.

Types of Technical Writers

The first step in hiring technical writers is identifying the type you need. In addition to the categories below, technical writers are classified by level of experience, area of expertise, and type of projects they work on.

Some technical writers may specialize in writing documentation for a particular industry, such as healthcare or SaaS. Others may specialize in writing a specific type of documentation, such as user guides, marketing materials, or white papers.

Most companies find technical writers with knowledge of their industry. Other project-based specialties include:

  • Software writers create user guides, installation guides, and reference manuals.
  • Hardware writers draft user manuals, assembly instructions, and service manuals.
  • Medical writers write package inserts, patient information leaflets, and informed consent forms.
  • Scientific writers develop journal articles, research papers, and grant proposals.
  • Engineering writers create technical specifications, design documents, and test reports.
  • Web writers craft documentation for websites and web applications, such as user guides, help documentation, and training materials.
  • Information developers write user guides, white papers, and case studies.
  • Technical trainers develop and deliver training programs.

By creating clear, concise, and accurate documentation, technical writers help customers use your products and services effectively, reducing support costs and improving customer satisfaction.

How To Find Technical Writers

Finding the right specialized talent can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Aside from the most obvious avenue of posting a job online, here are several ways to connect with writers with the requisite skills and who align with your organization.

Consider Freelancers

Whether you need a full-time staff member or a few projects a month, experienced freelancers with portfolio projects in your industry can be a great place to find the expertise you need. Freelancers may cost more per project, but they come with flexibility. You may develop a relationship and hire them full-time or work with a freelancer while searching for someone who wants employment.

Look for Current Employees With Strong Writing Skills

If you have people in-house with technical expertise and strong writing skills, ask if they want to add technical writing to their repertoire. You can nurture them with the training they need to transition to a technical writer position.

Work With a Content Writing Agency

The most straightforward way to find outstanding technical writers is to work with a content-writing agency that has already vetted them , like ContentWriters. You can have the work you want done at any scale you need. Account managers will oversee the process and manage the writers and editors for you.

Technical Writing Plays a Vital Role

Technical writing is a specialized skill requiring technical knowledge and well-developed communication skills. At its core, it’s about conveying complex information in a clear, concise, and accessible manner.

Writers with the right balance of audience insight, industry knowledge, and writing experience aren’t always easy to find. If your business needs technical writers, we can help.

Technical Writing Services

Technical content by expert writers that stands up to scrutiny.

If you’re a small business, SEO and content marketing agency, or even an enterprise-level company, Writing Studio’s technical writing services will help you streamline your content needs.

Become an authority

Beautifully written technical content can help your company become an authority in your industry.

This leads to an increase in engagements and can help position your company as a thought leader. Once you position yourself as a market leader, it can be exceedingly difficult for your competitors to catch up.

Provide value

When your readers have a problem or question about the topic of your technical content, you can provide a lot of value to them by offering answers.

Whether they come to your website from a search or directly, this helps to position your brand positively in the minds of your customers.

Increase organic traffic

Great content helps drive organic traffic to your website, and the best part is that you don’t have to pay for it.

While there is an initial investment required to produce content, it pays off in the long run if it ranks highly in searches and drives significant traffic to your website.

Lucky to have found Writing Studio

“I have had an outstanding experience working with Writing Studio and I will continue to use them… They are able to churn out however many articles we need without there being any drop in their high quality. Highly recommended.”

What’s included?

100% original.

Technical content must be completely original, or it will fail to rank high and be read by your target audience.

One of the top ways Google determines search rankings is the originality of content, so it is important to make sure your content is 100% original.

Expert writers

Google also takes into account the author of the content and determines if they are an authority or not based on the writer’s qualifications.

All our writers have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and typically have a Master of Science (MSc) or PhD level of education.

Delivered on time

Writing Studio offers a 7-business-day turnaround for our technical writing services.

This means that if you place a content order and make your payment on Monday, you will receive your articles the following Wednesday. We can also finalize any revisions that you request within 48 to 72 business hours.

Edited and proofread

Technical content has to be 100% error-free, which means no spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.

If it does contain errors, then this can make your company look unprofessional and result in a loss of user trust in the content that they are consuming.

CMS-friendly content

Whether you use WordPress or any other content management system (CMS), we will deliver content to you that can simply be copied and pasted into your CMS.

No more having to reformat content – we are a tech-savvy bunch, so we know how to correctly format all of your content, so you don’t have to.

Fact-checked

During the content-writing process, we ensure that your articles are 100% accurate and all facts are backed up by well-cited evidence from original sources.

We understand how important it is for you and your readers that your content is completely factual, so we double-check all sources.

How it works

The first step is to get in touch with us and tell us more about what content you want to be produced.

Are you looking to build a library of technical articles? Produce ebooks to share with your customers? Or start a new blog?

Letting us know what type of content you are after will help us develop a plan for you.

Step two involves our founder, Philip, reaching out and discussing your content needs with you. He will go over all of the technical writing services we provide and talk you through our pricing structure.

Typically, a new client will choose to order a batch of articles, blog posts, or e-books within a total word budget of 10,000 to 20,000 words. Writing Studio sells writing bundles with lower prices for the more words you order.

Regardless of which package you choose to order, we will present you with a detailed quote before any work commences.

The next step is to confirm the specifications of the content you want to be produced. If you have a list of topics and brand guidelines for us to use, that’s great, or we can provide you with a list of topics to cover based on keyword research for you to choose from.

Once we figure out specific topics and the number of articles, we will send you an invoice for your order, which can be paid by either PayPal or credit card. Once we receive payment, we will begin writing your technical content.

Finally, when we have completed your content, you will receive a warm and friendly “new articles” email in your inbox with your high-quality content.

Depending on your order, we can deliver fresh content once a week, once a month, once every fortnight, or whatever your preferred schedule is.

We want you to be in control and know exactly when to expect articles. At this point, should you have any feedback to provide or questions, we’ll gladly help accommodate any changes so that you’re completely satisfied.

Why Writing Studio?

Publishing technical content on your website in the form of articles, blog posts, or ebooks is a great way to share important information with your customers in an easy-to-understand way. For example, you can publish and share with your customers user manuals for your products in the form of an ebook. Well-researched and well-presented technical content will help you become a hub of industry information, and this helps to position your company as an authority within your industry.

The problem with some technical content is that writers simply copy and paste existing content, slightly change it around, and then publish it as if they are providing brand new information. Worse yet, sometimes companies publish technical content that is inaccurate! Taking shortcuts with your content like this reflects poorly on your company and can reduce your authority within your industry.

That’s where Writing Studio comes in. By working with us you can tap into our network of expert writers who all hold academic qualifications and have many years of technical writing experience. They will write engaging, factual, and original content that will help you become an industry authority and provide your customers with valuable content to solve their problems and answer their questions. We know hiring specialist writers can be a big investment, which is why we work with you until you are completely satisfied with our work.

For people who take the unbelievably complicated things that scientists and engineers devise and make it understandable for non-technical people.

What's the best way to break into tech writing for a digital marketer with a journalism degree?

I'm currently a Digital Marketing Specialist with about five years of experience. These days I mostly optimize content for SEO, manage my organization's website via CMS, send/manage/maintain lists and segments in our email marketing platform and present analytics.

In college I majored in Journalism & Mass Communication. However, I haven't done much actual writing over the last five years outside of an occasional blog about leisure/travel or editing health insurance documents. My first marketing job was for a hazardous waste company at which I wrote blogs and an e-book on a variety of odd topics. Prior to that I had an editing internship and wrote articles for free at Bleacher Report.

I clearly have some writing experience and generally consider myself a tech-savvy person, but whenever I see tech writing jobs I feel unqualified.

My question, I guess, is: How can I break into the field? Whether it be tips on how to present my previous writing experience or how I can make myself a more qualified applicant, I'm all ears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions about technical writing courses.

What is Technical Writing?

Technical writing is a form where you create content that’s easy to understand for the everyday user—translating technical jargon and complex information into easier and readable content so users can better understand their products and services.

There are many different types of products and services; therefore, there are various types of technical writing. Each type has another format, template, process, and structure. You may write FAQs for a technical website or end up supporting technical documents for research journals.

Common technical writing types include instruction manuals, user manuals, API documentation, financial documents, white papers, case studies, and more.

Most technical tasks usually depend on formatting, and that’s why using technical writing templates is essential. You can find various templates for inspiration for different kinds of technical online. It’s best to review some technical writing examples and samples and then work on your technical documents.

The field of technical writing is complicated because it requires writers to know the subject matter alongside having proper technical writing skills. In some cases, people prefer that technical writers should have direct or prior experience in the field to grasp the subject’s complexities. The technical writer needs to have a great understanding of the product or what it’s about.

As a result, if a technical writer doesn’t have the required technical writing skills, they have to work closely with the industry experts. It’s their job to keep professional communication channels between them and any expert they need to consult.

Excellent writing is not just about technical skills but also communication skills, years of experience, and overall subject knowledge.

Is technical writing a good career?

With many SaaS companies emerging every year, technical writing can be quite a fruitful career. The hardest part is finding initial clients who help you build a quality resume. But since not many writers (or SaaS companies in general) are familiar with technical writing and the required professional communication, it’s relatively easy to stand out if you have the proper knowledge and communication skills.

Are technical writing courses worth it?

Due to general unfamiliarity with technical writing across multiple industries, a quality writing course can be your gateway to a rewarding career. Although you should research before deciding on a program, technical writing courses are worth your time and money.

What are the qualifications to be a technical writer?

The qualifications for technical writers include A bachelor’s degree or certification in technical writing, communications, or a related field. You should also have experience as a technical writing intern.

How do I learn technical writing?

You can improve your technical writing skills and general business writing by taking a course on technical writing online or at a university. If you’re on the fence about learning technical writing, then I recommend you start with Technical Writer HQ’s certification to get a better understanding of the general technical writing process and audience analysis.

Secrets to Winning: Tips from Microsoft Advertising’s Top Global Agency

  • Carly O’Grady,

Adam Goodman

Five members of Kinesso, winners of the 2024 Global Agency of the Year award, indoors posing for the camera and smiling.

Microsoft Advertising’s regional Partner Awards acknowledge outstanding successes and innovations by partners across Asia Pacific, in a wide variety of categories including Generative AI innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and social impact.

Winning awards is a great way to stay at the forefront of the industry. It signals to the market that your team consistently delivers excellence and innovation, making you a standout choice among competitors. This recognition can open doors to new opportunities, foster stronger relationships, and ultimately drive business growth. By participating in programs like the Microsoft Advertising Partner Awards, you demonstrate your commitment to excellence and build a legacy of trust and credibility that resonates with clients and partners alike.

Creating a standout award entry

To compete for the top spot, it’s important to remember it's not just about the quality of the work itself, but also about how effectively you communicate its value and impact. A well-crafted entry highlights your strategic thinking, creativity, and attention to detail, making it easier for judges to understand and appreciate the significance of your achievements.

Carly O’Grady, National Search and Social Lead at Kinesso – winners of the 2024 Global Agency of the Year award – shares a few critical tips on how to maximize your chances of success and truly stand out in the competitive landscape.

Tips for writing a winning entry

Although our tips might seem straightforward, it's easy to overlook them amidst our busy schedules and competing priorities. Here are some reminders on where to focus your time and effort to maximize your chances of success:

  • Make sure your project aligns perfectly with the award categories: Each submission is carefully reviewed by several judges, and they will be looking at all the criteria for each specific award category. Those who don’t adhere to the eligibility criteria will be the first to be eliminated, which is unfortunate because sometimes, aside from the one critical error, the quality of the campaign might have made it a serious contender.
  • Showcase innovation: When entries are similar, the highest standard of information in each section can often tip the scales between a winner and a runner up. Put your best points up front and draw the reader in with the “who, what, why,” and most importantly the “why care” of your story. You want to make sure the judge wants to read further. Your opening statement should encompass the essence of your entry, showcase why it’s innovative, unique, and, most importantly, resonates with the judges.
  • Demonstrate impact: Use data and metrics to show the tangible impact of your work. How many regions, organizations, or people did your solution serve? Is the solution scalable across industries? What was the bottom-line impact? Did the solution save the customer money? How much? Use solid stats to show what you achieved. All of this information will lead to a more well-rounded story. The best way of ensuring your entry gets noticed is to include direct evidence of your customers’ satisfaction and success with your solution. Include relevant customer testimonials in your answers. And include links to supporting materials such as case studies, white papers, other awards, videos, or anything else that helps document you and your customers’ success.
  • Focus on customer success: Center your entry around the benefits to your customers. Highlight how your solutions have made a difference in their business and contributed to their success.

A few other pointers:

  • Show how it leveraged Microsoft Advertising solutions.
  • Describe how it helped you win against the competition from a technical or a business perspective.
  • Include information about how you went above and beyond in answering your customers’ needs.
  • Highlight how your solution is delivering meaningful, accessible, inclusive, and sustainable outcomes for customers.
  • When possible, show how your solution was tailored to target an untapped market.

Bonus tip: Consider more than one entry

Yes, writing more than one entry will take more time, but it will also give you a better chance of being a winner or finalist. Don’t go overboard though. Spend your time submitting your best one or two stories, rather than trying multiple categories with less compelling entries.

Inspiration to participate

Winning the Global Agency of the Year award at the Microsoft Advertising Partner Awards was a monumental achievement for Kinesso Australia. It not only validated our hard work but also opened doors to new opportunities and collaborations. I encourage all agencies to seize this opportunity and submit their nominations. The recognition you receive can propel your business to new heights and inspire your team to continue delivering exceptional results.

The Microsoft Advertising Partner Awards is not only a showcase of the incredible work that our partners do every day – it is an opportunity to benchmark against the region’s top-performing players and contribute to a culture of excellence and innovation. So, take the leap, share your story, and show the world the amazing work you are doing.

Submit your nomination by 11.59PM PST on August 30, 2024, and join us in celebrating the best in the industry. No matter which award you nominate for, make it count. We wish you the best of luck!

USDA Announces Almost $10 million in Organic Market Development Grants, Resulting in $85 million Invested to Expand Markets for U.S. Organic Products

Public affairs.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 26, 2024 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today awarded an additional $9.7 million for 13 grant projects through the Organic Market Development Grant (OMDG) program, bringing the total amount awarded through the program to $85 million. These projects will support the development of new and existing organic markets to increase the consumption of domestic organic agricultural products. The projects funded through this program, are anticipated to benefit over 119 million producers, buyers, and consumers.

“This final round of awards through the Organic Market Development Grant program marks an unprecedented investment into our nation’s organic industry and we will see the impacts of this funding for years to come,” said USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt. “The projects awarded through this program are making great strides in expanding market opportunities for organic businesses and ensuring producers and processors have the infrastructure to meet the growing consumer demand for organic products.”

Consumer demand for organically produced goods surpassed $69 billion in the U.S. in 2023, accounting for about 4% of total U.S. food sales. The Biden-Harris Administration recognizes how crucial the organic agricultural industry is to the nation’s economy and the investments needed to meet this incredible consumer demand. There are more than 27,800 organic farms and businesses across the nation producing and handling delicious organic food and products of all kinds. There are more than 47,000 such businesses around the world, providing vital ingredients and fresh foods not produced in the U.S. With this final award announcement, AMS has now awarded nearly $85 million to 106 projects in 36 states across the nation and the District of Columbia through the Organic Market Development Grant program, supporting these organic farmers and investing in the capacity of this growing sector. AMS previously announced awards through this program in  January ,  March ,  and  May 2024. This final round of awards and all OMDG grants, which are supporting development of new and existing organic markets, is made available through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC).

This round of awards includes projects for the market development and promotion, simplified equipment-only, and processing capacity expansion project types. The funded projects will increase the availability and demand for domestically produced organic agricultural products and address the need for additional market paths.

Recipients of this funding include:

  • Tuscarora Grain Co. in Mohrsville, Pa., will use grant funding to purchase a pellet mill to increase local capacity for pelletizing. The project will build the organic livestock feed supply chain capacity and remove barriers to new organic market development.
  • The Spicy Organics LLC, in Frisco, Texas, will purchase equipment to streamline and increase their processing capacity of organic spices, herbs, and grains. The equipment will help reduce manual labor, elevate processing efficiency, and increase productivity. This will result in facilitating entry into untapped markets, increasing the demand for premium organic products.
  • The Turning Green, in Sausalito, Calif., will leverage the massive purchasing scale of the school food sector to grow the organic supply chain by bringing together school food networks, small underserved organic farmers, and local agricultural support organizations. The project will coordinate training and technical support to school food service teams and organic farmers to align planning, implementation, logistics, and metrics to grow the sale of organic products to schools within the state.

A full list of awarded projects is available on the  OMDG webpage . One additional project is currently under environmental review with AMS.

AMS gave priority consideration to projects addressing specific pinpointed market needs for organic grains and livestock feed, organic dairy, organic fibers, organic legumes and other rotational crops, and organic ingredients currently unavailable in organic form.

This grant program is part of the  USDA Organic Transition Initiative (OTI), launched in fall 2022, which offers a suite of programs and resources to help existing organic farmers and those transitioning to organic production and processing. Other efforts under OTI include USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service conservation assistance for transitioning producers, including a new organic management practice standard and plans to leverage partnerships to expand relationships within the organic community, and AMS’ Transition to Organic Partnership Program, which builds mentorship relationships between transitioning and existing organic farmers to provide technical assistance and wrap-around support. Additionally, USDA’s Risk Management Agency provided direct support for crop insurance in 2023. More information about these initiatives and more can be found at  www.farmers.gov/organic-transition-initiative .

AMS administers programs that create domestic and international marketing opportunities for U.S. producers of food, fiber, and specialty crops. AMS also provides the agriculture industry with valuable services to ensure the quality and availability of wholesome food for consumers across the country and globally. AMS services and its significant grant investments create opportunities by supporting American farmers, ranchers and businesses across the supply chain, and drive economic development in small towns and rural communities.

USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in so many positive ways. In the Biden-Harris Administration, USDA is transforming America’s food system with a greater focus on more resilient local and regional food production, fairer markets for all producers, ensuring access to safe, healthy and nutritious food in all communities, building new markets and streams of income for farmers and producers using climate smart food and forestry practices, making historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy capabilities in rural America, and committing to equity across the Department by removing systemic barriers and building a workforce more representative of America.
