Last month we introduced the new AI-powered Bing and Microsoft Edge, your copilot for the web – delivering better search, complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to create content. Already, we have seen that chat is reinventing how people search with more than 100 million chats to date. We’ve seen people use chat in a variety of ways, from refining answers to complex questions to using it as a form of entertainment or for creative inspiration. Today we’re taking the chat experience to the next level by making the new Bing more visual.

We’re excited to announce we are bringing Bing Image Creator, new AI-powered visual Stories and updated Knowledge Cards to the new Bing and Edge preview. Powered by an advanced version of the DALL∙E model from our partners at OpenAI, Bing Image Creator allows you to create an image simply by using your own words to describe the picture you want to see. Now you can generate both written and visual content in one place, from within chat.

We know from research that the human brain processes visual information about 60,000 times faster than text , making visual tools a critical way people search, create and gain understanding. Based on Bing data, images are one of the most searched categories – second only to general web searches. Historically, search was limited to images that already existed on the web. Now, there are almost no limits to what you can search for and create.

For those in the Bing preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing chat experience, rolling out initially in Creative mode. By typing in a description of an image, providing additional context like location or activity, and choosing an art style, Image Creator will generate an image from your own imagination. It’s like your creative copilot. Just type something like “draw an image” or “create an image” as a prompt in chat to get creating a visual for a newsletter to friends or as inspiration for redecorating your living room.

Chat experience with Bing Image Creator

Bing Image Creator preview will also be available in Microsoft Edge, making it the first and only browser with an integrated AI-powered image generator. To use Bing Image Creator in Edge, simply click the Bing Image Creator icon in the sidebar to create your image or invoke from Bing chat in Edge.

At Microsoft, our teams are guided by our Responsible AI principles and the Responsible AI Standard to help them develop and deploy AI systems responsibly. To curb the potential misuse of Image creator, we are working together with our partner OpenAI, who developed DALL∙E, to deliver an experience that encourages responsible use of Image Creator. We have ensured OpenAI’s safeguards, plus additional protections, have been incorporated into Image Creator. For example, we have put controls in place that aim to limit the generation of harmful or unsafe images. When our system detects that a potentially harmful image could be generated by a prompt, it blocks the prompt and warns the user. We also make it clear that Image Creator’s images are generated by AI, and we include a modified Bing icon in the bottom left corner of each image to help indicate that the image was created using Image Creator. We continue to work closely with OpenAI to build, test and review mitigations for our integrations.

Since making the new Bing available in preview, we have been testing it with people to get real-world feedback to learn and improve the experience. People used it in some ways we expected and others we didn’t. In this spirit of learning and continuing to build new capabilities responsibly, we’re rolling out Bing Image Creator in a phased approach by flighting with a set of preview users before expanding more broadly. We will initially only include Image Creator in the Creative mode of Bing chat and our intention is to make it available in Balanced and Precise mode over time. We are also working on some ongoing optimizations for how Image Creator works in multi-turn chats. We continue to believe the best way to bring these technologies to market is to test them carefully, in the open, where everyone can provide feedback.

New AI-Powered Visual Stories and Knowledge Cards

To support the growing demand for more visual search experiences, we are also making Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0 available to all Bing users. Stories provide a more engaging way to search and interact with content, offering images and short videos. Also new to Bing users today, Knowledge Cards 2.0 is an AI-powered infographic-inspired experience that provides fun facts and key information at a glance. It’s been updated to include interactive, dynamic content like charts, graphs, timelines, visual stories and more. With these updates and more coming, our goal is to deliver more immersive experiences in Bing and Edge that make finding answers and exploring the web more interesting, useful and fun.

Bing Image Creator integrated into Bing chat will begin to roll out to Bing preview users on both desktop and mobile starting today. For those not in the new Bing preview, the preview experience of Image Creator is now available at bing.com/create for Bing users around the world in English. We will add more language support over time.

Bing Image Creator is also available in Microsoft Edge from the Image Creator icon in sidebar for both desktop and mobile starting today for Edge users around the world in English. We will also soon integrate Image Creator into Edge from the new Bing button in chat mode in the preview version of Edge.

How to use Microsoft Copilot (formerly called Bing Chat)

maria-diaz

Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in the fall of 2022, Microsoft has become one of the company's biggest investors . Microsoft leveraged these investments to superpower its own search engine,  Bing,  with  generative AI , infusing it with a new generative search experience . The company also developed a competitive AI chatbot -- Microsoft Copilot -- which is accessible as a standalone site or through Bing .

Also: How my 4 favorite AI tools help me get more done at work

Users can leverage Microsoft Copilot to ask questions,  upload images , and request  AI-generated images , just like they can with  ChatGPT . However, Copilot slightly differs slightly from its  more popular competitor , ChatGPT. Here's how to make the most of it.

How to use Microsoft Copilot

1. open copilot.

Visit  Copilot.Microsoft.com  (or download the app on your phone). Enter your prompts into the text area at the bottom of the screen and submit them to Copilot. You can also add photos to your request or use the microphone function for voice prompts.

You can ask Copilot unlimited questions per day even without signing in, but you'll have a response limit. For longer conversations and more complex capabilities, you have to sign in with a Microsoft or Github account. A Microsoft account could be an outlook.com or hotmail.com email address and password or the login information you use for Microsoft services, such as Office, OneDrive, or Xbox.

Also: Microsoft Copilot vs. Copilot Pro: Is the subscription fee worth it?

You can create a Microsoft account using any email address, Gmail and Yahoo! included.

2. Sign in for more

Microsoft Copilot is programmed to provide a more human-like answer to a query than a search engine. If you have a personal account, signing in will give you access to three conversation-style options for how Copilot answers your requests: creative, balanced, and precise.

Each of these formats is self-descriptive: choosing "more creative" will give you answers that are original and imaginative, and it can also generate images; "more balanced" is similar in tone to ChatGPT, an informative and friendly chat with a human-like answer; and "more precise" will render concise and straightforward responses.

You can set your language preference and country by adjusting the settings in the hamburger menu in the upper right corner. Signing in also lets you upload files with your query.

Signing in to Copilot with a personal account.

If you have an account through your workplace or school and choose to sign in, you'll be able to toggle between two Copilot modes in the upper lefthand corner: Work and Web.

Work is Copilot's Enterprise arm, integrated with Microsoft 365 to function as a productivity assistant that can summarize documents, help you prep for meetings, brainstorm ideas, organize tasks, and more. It can leverage your company's internal data and comes with enhanced security to ensure privacy when uploading files.

3. Explore Copliot's capabilities

The Microsoft Copilot bot differs slightly from ChatGPT, ZDNET's pick for the most popular AI chatbot . While you enter prompts in the conversations similarly, the format of the answers, the conversational style, and the user interface are all different.

Also:  Six skills you need to become an AI prompt engineer

Here's a breakdown to help you get to know the new Microsoft Copilot window:

  • Text area:  The bottom of the screen has a text area where you can enter your prompts and questions for Copilot.
  • Add an image: Microsoft lets users upload a photo for Copilot to process using AI, much like Google Lens  and ChatGPT. Clicking on the photo icon lets you add an image.
  • Microphone: If you'd rather use your device's microphone instead of your keyboard to give Copilot your prompts, you can click on the microphone in the text area to talk to the AI chatbot.
  • New topic:  When you click on New topic -- a chat bubble icon next to the text area with a plus sign -- Copilot will wipe your existing conversation and prompt you to move on to a new one.
  • Sources:  Copilot is a conversational AI-powered search engine, and though it does not give you answers in a list format as a search engine would, it does gather most of its responses from the web, thanks to Bing. When replying to a prompt, Copilot will list any sources and links below the message bubble.
  • Suggested follow-up questions:  After you get a response from Microsoft Copilot, it will generate suggestions for different follow-up questions that you can use. For example, if you ask Copilot, "What color is the sky?" it may suggest the follow-up questions, "Is the sky blue on other planets?" or "How does pollution affect the color of the sky?"
  • Prompt counter: When Copilot responds to a query within a conversation, you'll see a number that helps you count how many responses you've received. There's a limit of four replies per topic for users who aren't signed in and no limit for those who are signed in.
  • Like, dislike, copy, export, share, and read aloud buttons: When scanning the screen, you'll notice these buttons under each reply from Microsoft Copilot.

What can Microsoft Copilot do?

Like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot can generate text conversationally, compose essays , create letters , summarize content , write code , and  answer complex questions . It also has internet access, allowing it to provide up-to-date responses on current events -- something the free version of ChatGPT lacked until recently.

Also: 7 advanced ChatGPT prompt-writing tips you need to know

Copilot can also use AI to generate images  (for signed-in Microsoft users) within the chat window. All you have to do is ask it to create an image and describe what features you'd like the photo to have, and it'll generate an image right away. It can also process images you upload in the chat to tell you information about them, like identifying plant species.

How can I access Microsoft Copilot?

The Microsoft Copilot AI chatbot is accessible through the Copilot.Microsoft.com website or Bing. Users need a Microsoft account or Entra ID to log in, or you can use it without signing in and have limited responses per topic.

Can you use the new Microsoft Copilot on mobile?

The Microsoft Copilot chatbot is still accessible through the Bing mobile app. You can start a conversation on the web and scan a QR code to continue it on the mobile app.

Also:  Want quick access to Bing Chat on your phone? Add this handy widget

This app provides a straight line to the Copilot chatbot, with the benefits of not having to go through a website when you want to use it and the ability to add widgets to your phone's home screen.

Does Microsoft Copilot use ChatGPT?

Copilot does not use ChatGPT, as ChatGPT is not itself an LLM. Instead, Copilot uses a model from OpenAI's GPT-4 architecture to perform its functions. ChatGPT also uses a model from that family of models; however, it uses the most advanced one--GPT-4o.

Does Microsoft Copilot give wrong answers?

Just like ChatGPT and other large language models, the new Copilot is prone to giving out misinformation. Most of the output Copilot offers as answers are drawn from online sources, and we know we can't believe everything we read online.

Also:  The best AI chatbots of 2024: ChatGPT, Copilot, and worthy alternatives

Similarly, the Copilot chatbot can generate nonsensical answers unrelated to the original question, which are also known as hallucinations. It's important to take precautions when having conversations with AI chatbots, like never sharing personal and private information and never relying on them for medical or life-threatening information.

How is Microsoft Copilot different from a search engine?

Compared to a search engine, the biggest difference between Copilot and other AI chatbots is the conversational tone in rendering search results, thanks to the large language model (LLM) operating behind the scenes. Intelligently formatting search results into an answer to a specific question can make it easier to find something online.

Also: Six levels of autonomous work: How AI augments, then replaces

Beyond the search capabilities that the standard Bing search engine already has, Copilot is a full-fledged AI chatbot that can do many things similar to tools such as ChatGPT. Both Copilot and ChatGPT, for example, can generate text, such as an essay or a poem, write code, or ask complex questions and hold a conversation with follow-up questions.

Does Microsoft have an AI image creator?

Microsoft also debuted Bing Image Creator as part of its generative AI tools. Currently,  Microsoft is using DALL-E , an AI image generator from OpenAI. It's accessible within Copilot -- users can give Copilot a prompt to create images within an existing chat instead of going to a separate website.

Also:  How to use Bing Image Creator (and why it's better than DALL-E 2)

Is Microsoft Copilot free?

The Copilot chatbot is completely free. You can use the Copilot chatbot to ask questions, get help with a problem, or seek inspiration.

Hands-on: Microsoft’s new AI-powered Bing can write essays and plan vacations

Mark Hachman

Bing’s new AI-powered chatbot is basically ChatGPT with ads…and one that refuses to do your homework for you. Well, sometimes.

That’s not necessarily a derogatory criticism; the new Bing is pretty amazing. In your first few minutes with the new Bing chat interface, you’ll probably see even more sophistication than the free version of ChatGPT currently offers, with lengthy, detailed responses that can help you in many walks of life. But they may end with a jarring ad that looks (and probably is) ripped straight from Bing. That said, the fresh AI experience already work shockingly well more often than not.

The new Bing experience is basically two parts. There’s the traditional search, with a list of search results and a new contextual interface to the right; and the new “Chat” interface, which can be accessed either by swiping up from the list of links or via its own link. Microsoft’s new Bing.com, for those who have access, features a large search box in the center, with room for lengthy searches of up to 1,000 characters. It’s above that search box where you’ll find the small “Chat” link.

How to use the new Bing

Like any other search engine, the new Bing isn’t complicated to use. Type in any traditional search query (“best Caribbean vacation spots,” for example) and Bing will return a list of traditional search results. But wait — to the right is something new: a text box with a textual description of what Bing thinks would be the best vacation destinations for you to go to. This is a version of the new ChatGPT-powered conversational experience that Microsoft launched on Tuesday morning.

The key difference between the left and the right side appears to be that Bing is collating the results listed on the left — saving you a click or two, in other words. (The publishers of those sites might replace “saving” with some derivative of “robbing,” as your click helps drive them traffic and revenue.) At the end of the box, there is a list of footnotes: links that expand if you hover over them, as well as followup questions that can take the conversation further.

Bing search and context

Bing’s new “traditional” search will add a new contextual information box to the right, leading to the chat interface.

 alt=

If you click them — or the related button, “Let’s chat” — the entire interface will scroll upwards, opening up a new space above the search results. Welcome to the new Bing, powered by ChatGPT. You may see a message box under a result that allows access to the chat window, too.

The Bing search and chat is supposed to work within Edge as well, in the sidebar of the browser. Additional capabilities include the ability to summarize PDF documents and provide additional contextual information, Microsoft says. But when we downloaded the Edge Dev version in which the Bing sidebar was enabled, we couldn’t seem to trigger the function.

Welcome to Bing chat

If you’re familiar with ChatGPT, the Bing interface won’t feel all that different. The idea is that you can ask the chatbot questions, receive responses, and follow the conversation further or pursue other angles. (Clicking the Feedback section reveals that this product appears to be called Codex.)

For now, the experience is entirely free, though you’ll need to be logged into your Microsoft account to see the benefits of the chat and the new Bing experience. Until Microsoft pushes the entire Bing experience live, you’ll be forced to join a waitlist. Even then, you’ll be allowed to ask the new Bing a limited number of queries, we’re told. For now, Microsoft isn’t allowing anonymous queries, though that should be added in the future, Microsoft said.

Unfortunately, Bing’s chatbot would occasionally disconnect, generating an error message or the option to refresh the page. If you do, all of your conversations disappear. This isn’t always a problem, but Bing (and other AI) often regenerate answers that differ, so that a good, comprehensive answer might not appear again the second time you ask.

Bing Excel query

So what’s it like using Microsoft’s Bing chatbot? Anecdotally, it feels somewhat like the old days of ChatGPT. ChatGPT emerged without a number of guardrails, answering without restriction on a number of queries. Bing feels a little bit looser, though it will also set polite limitations, as well: it declined to respond when asked for the nicknames for various ethnicities (a lead-in to racist slurs) and smartly declined to answer “how to pick up a girl” as a query that objectified women. Interestingly, it then later erased the second answer entirely, responding that I had to search Bing.com to find out more.

In terms of a much more innocuous query (“Who would win in a fight, Hawkman or Captain America?”), however, Bing actually picked a winner. Well, it did, once. ChatGPT usually demurs until prompted further. Naturally, Bing will write code for you, too. Limericks? Songs? Absolutely.

Bing Hawkman vs Captain America

The key difference between Bing and, say, Google Bard , is that Bing footnotes its responses, visually indicating what portion of its response comes from what site. At the end of the response, Bing supplies a list of links, which you can click or at least hover over for more information. It often adds a little emoji, too, humanizing the conversation.

On occasion, though, there’s also an ad. Ask Bing about a Caribbean vacation and it will close with a sponsored link; ask it how to change the RAM in your laptop and it will end with a “carousel” of shopping links. (That query completely ignored the very valid issue of exactly what type of RAM to buy or insert.)

Bing ad

You probably won’t care that users will pass over those links, disappointing publishers. Microsoft promises that the chat interface won’t be full of sponsored content, what you might call “advertorial.” It does matter that in the traditional Bing list of links, sponsored ads appear first ; in the chatbot, sponsored ads appear last . That may mean that consumers prefer using the chatbot to traditional links. Analysts I spoke to insist that this will change search forever; if this cultural trend takes hold, it might.

Is new Bing better than ChatGPT?

So is Bing better than Google’s Bard? Until Bard is released, we can’t say. It does offer footnotes, which Bard does not. Bing also does seem more comprehensive than what You.com offers.

Is Bing better than ChatGPT? In some ways, yes. So far Bing feels more comprehensive than the free version of ChatGPT, although OpenAI’s chatbot does seem much more willing to serve as a study aid.

When asking both engines to write an essay comparing and contrasting two artistic styles, ChatGPT actually wrote the essay. Bing just supplied an outline, forcing any student using it to do the work itself. Well, the first time, anyway. When I tried to grab a screenshot (and then copied the question again) Bing helpfully wrote the essay. If at first you don’t succeed…

ChatGPT versus Bing in art essay

In other ways, Bing limits itself much more. Bing won’t dispense medical advice, and balks at anything sexual. (Ironically, those answers can be sought using the traditional search interface.) It won’t generate content that is harmful, offensive, or copyrighted. It’s also good at preventing end runs around those restrictions. In a test asking for an Excel function to perform a specific task, the two tied: Bing gave more methods than ChatGPT, but ChatGPT’s examples not only explained the code but were much more focused.

We’ll need more study before we can definitively say one is better than the other, though.

Ultimately, though, you can’t help but feel that Bing is being extremely generous about the whole thing, as far as its competition is concerned.

“Ultimately, the choice between Bing and Google Bard may depend on your personal preferences, needs, and expectations,” Bing responded, including the emoji, when asked whether it or Bard was better. “You may want to try both of them and see which one suits you better. 😊”

This story has been updated with a video demonstration of Bing’s AI chat.

Inside Out 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Inside out 2 made me more frustrated with pixar's lacking lgbtq+ representation, inside out 2: why mindy kaling & bill hader were recast in the sequel (despite having a "great time working on inside out").

  • Inside Out 2 delves into puberty with relatable new emotions like Anxiety and Envy, while honoring Bing Bong's sacrifice from the original film.
  • Origami Bing Bong seen in Joy's bunk is a sweet Easter egg, hinting at the impact of the beloved imaginary friend in Inside Out 2.
  • Pixar's tradition of Easter eggs continues in Inside Out 2, with subtle nods to upcoming films and beloved animators hidden throughout the movie.

Pixar's Inside Out 2 is a hit with audiences, both for its heartwarming story and adorable Easter eggs, including one of Bing Bong. Released in June 2024, Inside Out 2 catches up with the familiar emotions — Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger inside young Riley Andersen's mind. However, as a 13-year-old, Riley is experiencing puberty and with it, a new slew of Inside Out 2 emotions —Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. The relatable story proved just as effective as the first Inside Out , and the film has grossed over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo ).

Inside Out 2 explored puberty the way the original examined the last vestiges of childhood. In 2015's Inside Out , Bing Bong is Riley's imaginary friend, and he plays a crucial role. As Riley grows older, Bing Bong feels lonely, so he starts collecting happy memories in a bottomless bag. When Joy and Sadness find themselves lost from Headquarters, they find Bing Bong, who eagerly agrees to help. However, his childlike innocence makes their journey back to Headquarters challenging. In an moment of selflessness, Bing Bong sacrifices himself . And that sacrifice isn't forgotten in Inside Out 2 .

A composite image of Riley looking excited in front of the emotions crammed together in a small space in Inside Out 2

Pixar's imaginative exploration of emotions, Inside Out, has returned for a sequel, but will the popular franchise continue in Inside Out 3?

An Origami Bing Bong Figure Can Be Spotted In Joy's Bunk In Inside Out 2

This tiny detail adds a touch of magic to joy’s room.

One of the earliest and most memorable Easter eggs in Inside Out 2 is an origami figure of Bing Bong placed in Joy's bunk as Riley drifts to sleep after winning an ice hockey match . As Joy sits in her bunk, the camera momentarily pans across the space, revealing the Bing Bong figure, keeping watch as she sleeps. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but for those who catch it, the sight of the beloved imaginary friend in origami form is sweet and nostalgic. While Riley might have grown past Bing Bong, he's still kept alive by Joy.

The last time Bing Bong was seen in Inside Out , he was fading as he told Joy to "Take her to the moon for me."

The last time Bing Bong was seen in Inside Out , he was fading away as he told Joy to " T ake her to the moon for me ," and keeping the origami of Bing Bong so close to where she sleeps is Joy's way of remembering his dying wish. And the imaginary friend clearly impacted more than just Riley and Joy, as all the animators loved him as well. Inside Out 2 production designer Jason Deamer told Variety , “ Everyone wanted to bring back Bing Bong. ”

Other Easter Eggs In Inside Out 2

Discover the elio easter egg.

Riley in bed with 4*Town poster above her in Inside Out 2

Pixar has a long-standing tradition of embedding Easter eggs in their films, offering fans a playful nod to other works and company history. These hidden elements add an extra layer of enjoyment for viewers who love to spot references and connections across Pixar’s cinematic universe. Deamer told Variety ,

“ We have to entertain ourselves when we work. We wanted to have a digital backlot from all the movies we’ve ever built, just like you would on a live-action set or backlot. And that’s where it came from. It just snowballed into what it is today. We just find anywhere we can to hide stuff because it’s a super fun thing to do. ”

In Inside Out 2 , the Easter eggs are subtle. One noteworthy example is a reference to the upcoming Pixar film Elio , which is set for release in 2025. This Easter egg is featured during a memory sequence involving sarcasm, where a reference to Elio can be spotted within the memory spheres. Another recurring Pixar symbol, the Luxo Ball, appears hidden in the background of the scene when the emotions are inside Riley's mind as a parade of careers.

The film also includes references to the fictional band 4*Town from Turning Red , Lance Slashblade from a game Riley used to play, and Ralph Eggleston, a beloved Pixar animator who passed away in 2022. Eggleston was influential in the creation of Toy Story , Monsters, Inc. , and the original Inside Out , making his tribute a meaningful inclusion for fans and production members. Between this and the Bing Bong Inside Out 2 Easter egg, viewers can get ready to cry all over again on a rewatch.

Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.

AI-generated images can be used for a wide range of projects, including social media graphics, personalized marketing materials , and stunning website visuals. They're also fantastic for conceptual art, storyboarding for films or animations, and even interior design mockups. Designers, marketers, and art directors may find that AI-generated images are a game-changer when it comes to communicating early-stage ideas without wasting time and resources on polished early-stage designs.

What model does Microsoft Designer use to create images?

How can i ensure my ai-generated images are on brand.

First, clearly define your brand's identity—colors, fonts, image style, key motifs, and overall mood and aesthetic—and incorporate those elements into your prompts. Consider creating a set of brand guidelines to consistently guide the AI's output. When you generate an image that fits your brand, note the prompt you used. Likewise, observe which prompts don't work and refine them accordingly. A spreadsheet can be a handy way to log successful prompts so you can recycle them in the future.

Everything you’ll ever need to know about tiktok’s ‘bing bong’.

You’ve probably heard the words “bing” and “bong” before as onomatopoeia or as in “pass the bong.” Now, the phrase “bing bong” has gone viral as part of another TikTok trend and has taken up residency in various internet jokes. It all began with Sidetalk , the brainchild of NYU students Jack Byrne and Trent Simonian, who began posting one-minute man-on-the-street videos in September 2019. Since then, “New York’s one-minute street show” has amassed 1.2 million followers on Instagram and 3.4 million followers on TikTok .

In Episode 81, the epicenter of the meme, NY-rapper GORILLA NEMS, the self-proclaimed “Coney Island Mayor,” interviews residents. Though only 54 seconds, the video has a lot to unpack. One man wears a single ski on the pavement, going “cross-Coney-skiing.” NEMS asks the man, “What do you want to tell Joe Byron,” referring to Joe Biden, “right now?” The man responds smoothly in a deep, gravelly voice, “Wassup, baby? Take me out to dinner.”

“Hardhat,” whom one Redditor dubbed “the Captain America of the Sidetalk Cinematic Universe,” ends the video succinctly, summing up the “bing bong” lifestyle. Dogs still in hand, he says, “If you see these dogs in your front yard, just know upstairs I’m going hard. Bing bong!”

You could also send your money to the man who’s become known as “Joe Byron.” His real name is TJ, and according to the GoFundMe created by Zoë McCreary, he’s experiencing homelessness. So far, more than 2,000 people have donated. One donor wrote, “Bing Bong and Byron audios makes me happy, so I hope life treats him better.”

The phrase “bing bong” has come to mean, well, literally anything people want it to mean. All memes are flexible and subject to adaptation, but “bing bong” has an especially versatile use. Its popular origin has been attributed to everything from a character in the 2015 Disney/Pixar animated feature film “Inside Out,” to NEMS’ song by the same name, to the sound the New York City subway doors make before closing. No matter where it came from, people are finding new and creative ways to apply the phrase.

Despite its versatility, bing bong will always hold a special place in the hearts of New Yorkers and has become a rallying cry for the New York Knicks fanbase. About a month after the first Sidetalk video, another clip shows Knicks fans celebrating their win against the Boston Celtics in double overtime on Oct. 21. Amid the crowd losing its collective mind, fan Jordan Bloom calls out, “Bing bong!”

Lil Nas X, who is known for enjoying a good meme, joined in at the Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch, where he got fellow entertainers Avril Lavigne, Normani, Olivia Rodrigo, Tinashe, Jack Harlow, Anitta and Chloe Bailey to say lines from the original Sidetalk TikTok video.

Now, bing bong has officially conquered fashion, sports, politics and entertainment. While the joke is sure to fizzle out sooner rather than later — with meme life cycles growing ever quicker these days — there will always be more wacky content to enjoy through these street shows. Sidetalk showcases the richness of humanity and our comfortingly endless capacity to find joy in the ridiculous.

The “Bing Bong” TikTok Audio Trend, Explained

Heres why a very New York-specific phrase has spread all over the internet.

Lil nas X posts a TikTok using the bing bong audio clips. What does bing bong mean on TikTok? The ne...

Wondering why over the last week you’ve been getting flipped off on TikTok while people lip sync to an audio aggressively shouting, “Bing Bong!”? Yeah, that might need some explaining. If you’ve been snoozing on TikTok trends, you may have missed the new-ish catchphrase that is quickly becoming the For You page’s anthem. Depending on who you ask, what “bing bong” means on TikTok is a fast-evolving concept that means nothing and yet everything .

The audio clips going viral on TikTok comee from a one-minute NYC street show featured on Instagram, called Sidetalk , hosted by Jack Byrne and Trent Simonian. The show’s intro features a quick audio of the subway doors opening, an iconic two-note-jingle that New Yorkers know by heart. (The original bing bong, if you will.) Back in April 2021, Brooklyn-based musician Gorilla Nems hosted an episode in which he introduced Coney Island’s finest . In the episode, he shouts “Bing bong!” revamping the jingle as an approving exclamation as he vibes along to what someone is saying. From there, it became his catch phrase. Fast forward to October: Sidewalk films fans after a victorious Knicks season opener , and among a jubilant salad of hoots and hollers, is a clear “bing bong.” The clip went viral first among Knicks fans as a sort of team sprit inside joke. Since then, TikTokers have gotten their hands on different Sidetalk episodes and spliced out the most memorable phrases, using them to narrate anything from makeup tutorials to baby reveals . (A word of warning for those without their headphones plugged in: The full audio is pretty NSFW.)

While Bing Bong is the star of the show, the different audio clips are rife with viral treats. In the original April video, Gorilla Nems asks a Coney Island resident who the president is, and his response — “Joe Byron” [ sic ] — is featured in a number of subsequent audios. (As internet culture newsletter Embedded reported, the man, TJ, is currently unhoused and a GoFundMe started to help him with living expenses has already raised over $30,000.) “What do you wanna tell Joe Byron right now?” asks Nems in another viral clip; “ What’s up, baby? Take me out to dinner ,” responds TJ. Another one: “What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?” asks Nems; “ Beans, rice, Jesus Christ, and Byron .”

Though the origin is clearly New York-specific, it’s since spread to all corners of TikTok. The original sound is used by over half a million videos, and clips with the the # bingbong hashtag have over 210 million views. Everyone from Lil Nas X to the Duolingo Owl and Trader Joes employees are acting out the seven-person chorus of mashed up phrases form the now iconic Sidetalk episode. There’s Bing Bong Ten Commandments , created by Nems — to use the phrase, you must have taken the subway at least 25 times in your life and during rush hour. There’s even Bing Bong merch .

You don’t have to be from New York to appreciate the absurdity of “Bing Bong” TikTok, but at least now you know what everyone’s referencing.

Breaking Up Google Isn’t Nearly Enough

An old computer keyboard and a monitor in a field with many stones.

By Julia Angwin

Ms. Angwin is a contributing Opinion writer and an investigative journalist.

Have you looked for a recipe online? If so, you probably found yourself on a blinking hellscape of a web page that was as long as an epic poem, but without any of the insight. First, you get the hokey story about the recipe’s origin. Then there are the videos. The irrelevant ads. The photos of each ingredient. The thousands of words are divided up into sections with headlines like, “Chia Seed Pudding Troubleshooting.”

If you graduated from college anytime before 2010, you may remember a time when websites provided relevant information, and did so swiftly. The reason so many businesses have tortured their web pages into a pulsing, ad-cluttered, endless scroll is because that is what it takes to check all the boxes needed to rank highly in Google search results. The result succeeds in its goal — getting the website to land at the top of Google results — but does little to get you to your goal. And you have little alternative but to wade through the morass.

A federal judge recently told us what we already knew: that Google is a monopolist in the web search market. In his scathing 277-page ruling , U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta noted that Google has an 89.2 percent share of the overall search market and a 94.9 percent share of searches conducted on mobile devices.

Fixing the problem is trickier. Next month, the judge will start deliberations on how to fix an industry that is so thoroughly dominated by one player. It is not going to be easy to jump-start competition in a market where Google has spent decades and billions of dollars quashing rivals.

The judge seems likely to ban the kind of exclusive distribution deals Google long used to make its product the default search engine on Apple phones and in web browsers such as Firefox. In 2021, Google spent more than $26 billion on these deals. And the Department of Justice is reportedly considering pushing for a breakup of Google — which would stop the company from installing Google search as the default option on its popular Chrome web browser and Android phones.

Both of those remedies are a good first step, but they aren’t enough. They only address the barriers that competitors would face in marketing a rival search engine. But there are also huge obstacles to anyone who just wants to build one.

Free APA Citation Generator

Generate citations in APA format quickly and automatically, with MyBib!

APA 7 guide book cover

🤔 What is an APA Citation Generator?

An APA citation generator is a software tool that will automatically format academic citations in the American Psychological Association (APA) style.

It will usually request vital details about a source -- like the authors, title, and publish date -- and will output these details with the correct punctuation and layout required by the official APA style guide.

Formatted citations created by a generator can be copied into the bibliography of an academic paper as a way to give credit to the sources referenced in the main body of the paper.

👩‍🎓 Who uses an APA Citation Generator?

College-level and post-graduate students are most likely to use an APA citation generator, because APA style is the most favored style at these learning levels. Before college, in middle and high school, MLA style is more likely to be used. In other parts of the world styles such as Harvard (UK and Australia) and DIN 1505 (Europe) are used more often.

🙌 Why should I use a Citation Generator?

Like almost every other citation style, APA style can be cryptic and hard to understand when formatting citations. Citations can take an unreasonable amount of time to format manually, and it is easy to accidentally include errors. By using a citation generator to do this work you will:

  • Save a considerable amount of time
  • Ensure that your citations are consistent and formatted correctly
  • Be rewarded with a higher grade

In academia, bibliographies are graded on their accuracy against the official APA rulebook, so it is important for students to ensure their citations are formatted correctly. Special attention should also be given to ensure the entire document (including main body) is structured according to the APA guidelines. Our complete APA format guide has everything you need know to make sure you get it right (including examples and diagrams).

⚙️ How do I use MyBib's APA Citation Generator?

Our APA generator was built with a focus on simplicity and speed. To generate a formatted reference list or bibliography just follow these steps:

  • Start by searching for the source you want to cite in the search box at the top of the page.
  • MyBib will automatically locate all the required information. If any is missing you can add it yourself.
  • Your citation will be generated correctly with the information provided and added to your bibliography.
  • Repeat for each citation, then download the formatted list and append it to the end of your paper.
