Teachers worried about students turning in essays written by a popular artificial intelligence chatbot now have a new tool of their own.

Edward Tian, a 22-year-old senior at Princeton University, has built an app to detect whether text is written by ChatGPT, the viral chatbot that's sparked fears over its potential for unethical uses in academia.

Edward Tian, a 22-year-old computer science student at Princeton, created an app that detects essays written by the impressive AI-powered language model known as ChatGPT.

Tian, a computer science major who is minoring in journalism, spent part of his winter break creating GPTZero, which he said can "quickly and efficiently" decipher whether a human or ChatGPT authored an essay.

His motivation to create the bot was to fight what he sees as an increase in AI plagiarism. Since the release of ChatGPT in late November, there have been reports of students using the breakthrough language model to pass off AI-written assignments as their own.

Tian said many teachers have reached out to him after he released his bot online on Jan. 2, telling him about the positive results they've seen from testing it.

More than 30,000 people had tried out GPTZero within a week of its launch. It was so popular that the app crashed. Streamlit, the free platform that hosts GPTZero, has since stepped in to support Tian with more memory and resources to handle the web traffic.

How GPTZero works

To determine whether an excerpt is written by a bot, GPTZero uses two indicators: "perplexity" and "burstiness." Perplexity measures the complexity of text; if GPTZero is perplexed by the text, then it has a high complexity and it's more likely to be human-written. However, if the text is more familiar to the bot — because it's been trained on such data — then it will have low complexity and therefore is more likely to be AI-generated.

Separately, burstiness compares the variations of sentences. Humans tend to write with greater burstiness, for example, with some longer or complex sentences alongside shorter ones. AI sentences tend to be more uniform.

In a demonstration video, Tian compared the app's analysis of a story in The New Yorker and a LinkedIn post written by ChatGPT. It successfully distinguished writing by a human versus AI.

Last month, Scott Aaronson, a researcher currently focusing on AI safety at OpenAI, revealed that the company has been working on a way to "watermark" GPT-generated text with an "unnoticeable secret signal" to identify its source.

The open-source AI community Hugging Face has put out a tool to detect whether text was created by GPT-2, an earlier version of the AI model used to make ChatGPT. A philosophy professor in South Carolina who happened to know about the tool said he used it to catch a student submitting AI-written work.

The New York City education department said on Thursday that it's blocking access to ChatGPT on school networks and devices over concerns about its "negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content."

Tian is not opposed to the use of AI tools like ChatGPT.

GPTZero is "not meant to be a tool to stop these technologies from being used," he said. "But with any new technologies, we need to be able to adopt it responsibly and we need to have safeguards."

Research shows our AI scanner shows no statistically significant bias against English Language Learners

• In response to customer feedback and papers claiming that AI detector tools are biased against writers whose first language is not English, we expanded our false positive evaluation to include writing samples of English Language Learners (ELL). We tested another nearly 2,000 writing samples of ELL writers.
• We found that in documents meeting the 300-word count requirement, ELL writers received a 0.014 false positive rate, and native English writers received a 0.013.
• This means that there is no statistically significant bias against non-native English speakers.

Independent research shows the “Turnitin [AI writing detector] achieved very high accuracy”

• Two of the 16 detectors, Turnitin and Copyleaks, correctly identified the AI- or human-generated status of all 126 documents, with no incorrect or uncertain responses.
• Three AI text detectors — Turnitin, Originality, and Copyleaks — have very high accuracy with all three sets of documents examined for this study: GPT-3.5 papers, GPT-4 papers, and human-generated papers.
• Of the top three detectors identified in this investigation, Turnitin “achieved very high accuracy” in all five previous evaluations. Copyleaks, included in four earlier analyses, performed well in three of them.

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are able to produce a lot of different content, from quick answers to a question to creating cover letters, poems, short stories, outlines, essays, and reports. However, it often contains errors, false claims, or  plausible sounding, but completely incorrect or nonsensical answers , so be sure to take the time to verify and check the content created to catch these problems. 

Generative AI can also be used to create fake images or videos so well that they are  increasingly difficult to detect , so be careful which images and videos you trust, as they may have been created to spread  disinformation .

Fact checking is very important when using AI!

Generative AI relies on the information it finds on the internet to create new output. As information is often biased, the newly generated content may contain a  similar kind of bias . Example of potential bias include gender-bias, racial bias, cultural bias, political bias, religious bias, and so on.  Closely scrutinize AI-generated content to check for inherent biases.  

Comprehensiveness

AI content may be selective as it depends on the algorithm which it uses to create the responses, and although it accesses a huge amount of information found on the internet, it may not be able to access subscription-based information that is secured behind firewalls. Content may also lack depth, be vague rather than specific, and it may be full of clichés, repetitions, and even contradictions. 

AI tools may not always use the most current information in the content they create. In some disciplines, it is crucial to have the most recent and updated information available. Think, for example, about the recent pandemic. Research was going at a very fast pace and it was important to have not only the most comprehensive and most reliable data available, but also the most recent. Technology is another area that is constantly changing, and information that is valid one year, may not be valid the next. There are many other examples, and it is important that you check the publication dates for any sources of information that are used in AI-generated texts. 

Note: As of April 2024, ChatGPT's (GPT-3.5) information comes from January 2022 and it does not have the ability to pull current information from the Internet.

Generative AI tools don't always include citations to the sources of information. It is also known to  create citations which are incorrect and to simply make up citations to non-existent sources  (sometimes referred to as  AI Hallucination ). It may provide citations by an author that usually writes about your topic, or even identify a relevant well-known journal, but the title, pages numbers, dates, and sometimes authors are completely fictional. 

Not crediting sources of information used and creating fake citations are both cases of plagiarism, and therefore breaches of  Academic Integrity . Be use Camosun Library's Single Search tool  to verify whether the sources are correct or even exist.

Generative AI tools rely on what they can find in their vast knowledge repository to create new work, and a new work may infringe on copyright if it uses copyrighted work for the new creation.

For example, there have been several lawsuits against tech companies that use images found on the internet to program their AI tools. One such  lawsuit in the United States is by Getty Images which accuses Stable Diffusion  of using millions of pictures from Getty's library to train its AI tool. They are claiming damages of US $1.8 trillion.

There is much debate about the ownership of copyright to a product that was created by AI. Is it the person who wrote the code for the AI tool, the person who came up with the prompt, or is it the AI-tool itself?  Although currently in Canada, AI-generated works are not copyright protected , this may change in the future.  Also note that laws in other countries may differ from that in Canada. 

Model Collapse

Recent research has raised the concern that as more text is published that has been created by generative AI, this AI-generated content will enter the training datasets for new generations of AI, which may decrease the quality of the data since errors in early generations of AI compound themselves over time. A study by Shumailov et al. (2023) found that the inclusion of AI-generated content in training datasets led to model collapse, which is  "a degenerative process whereby, over time, models forget the true underlying data distribution, even in the absence of a shift in the distribution over time" (p. 2).
