Whether you're looking for a new employer, changing industries, or becoming an online freelancer, a career portfolio can make you stand out from hundreds of competitors. By creating a visual presentation of your skills and achievements, you can make a unique document that'll compel people to invite you for an interview.

But what if you don't know how to use Adobe Photoshop or Canva? Don't worry; you can create a captivating career portfolio using Microsoft PowerPoint! Here's how.

1. Choose a Clean Template

If you know your way around Microsoft PowerPoint, you can make a career portfolio from scratch. But, to make your life easier, choose from the thousands of free templates you can download from Microsoft.

Launch PowerPoint and, from the Home Page, choose New . In the New tab, you'll see template options to choose from. You can also search for other designs if you don't see anything you like. However, ensure your template is clean and free from distractions, so your employer/client can focus on your details.

As an example, let's create a writer's career portfolio. Click on your preferred template (we'll use Orange burst), then select the Create button that appears in a new window.

2. Customize Your Introduction

Changing the Stock Image on Your PowerPoint Template

You don't have to keep the original image on the template. Unless you're applying for a farming position, the oranges-in-a-dish stock image in the Orange burst template isn't appropriate for most positions.

Right-click on the stock image, mouse over to Change Picture , then choose any of the appropriate options. If you already have an image saved on your computer, select This Device . But if you don't have one ready yet, choose From Stock Images or From Online Sources to source Creative Commons photos online.

You can also choose From Icons if you want to use a black and white icon (but we don't recommend this) or From Clipboard if you've already copied an image and want to use that instead.

Changing First Slide Design on PowerPoint using Design Ideas

We'll use a Creative Commons typewriter stock image from Bing for this example. Once you've selected the photo you want, you can also change how your slide looks by clicking Design > Design Ideas .

Once you've settled on a final look, replace the text on the first slide with your details. Write your name and the position you're applying for. You can also add your profile photo cropped in a perfect circle . Doing so is optional, but helps the person reading your profile see you.

Inserting Your Photograph in a Circle Shape

To do so, go to Insert > Shapes . In the dropdown menu, choose Oval, then click anywhere on the slide to insert a circle. Afterward, right-click the circle you just created and choose Format Shape .

In the Format Picture pane, select Fill > Picture or texture fill , then under Picture source , choose Insert . In the Insert Pictures window, click From a File , then insert your portrait image.

Ensure you're using a high-quality image and that your details are clear and easy to read. Paying attention to details is essential as this is the first impression you leave on your future employer or client.

3. Outline Your Details

After showing your name and position, add the rest of your details in the following slides. We're going to add the following information:

  • About : This says what you exactly do.
  • Experience : This shows your professional history. If you're a fresh grad, you can include other experiences like internships, school projects, thesis, and even informal employment.
  • Portfolio : This section could be one slide or multiple slides. The portfolio section is crucial if you're applying for a creative position. But even if you're not targeting a creative job, you can use this to show the employer/client a preview of your output.
  • Education and Training : Lists your educational background and other relevant training you have undertaken.
  • Contact : Include your contact details.

Your writing should always be concise and straightforward. Avoid using jargon and only focus on relevant information. Don't include skills or experiences that aren't important to what you're applying for. Also, ensure your text is easy to read. Avoid cursive or stylistic font, and use a large font size.

Inserting a Content with Caption Slide on PowerPoint

Add your next slide by going to Home > New Slide . In the dropdown menu, select Content with Caption to add a slide showing your details. This type of slide is typically divided into two: you can use the left column as a table of contents and the right column for your main content.

On the left column, select the " Click to add text " text box and write your name. If you added a profile photo on your first slide, copy it from there and paste it above your name. Afterward, select the text box under your name and write the sections we've listed above.

To highlight the current section your reader is on, change its font color or add an underline. For this example, we're changing the font color to light red, putting it in bold, and increasing the font size.

4. Add an About You Page

About Page Slide

The About section contains your objective and what you can exactly offer. You can break this down into two sections. Write the first one in paragraph form, telling the client/employer what you do in general. This part can be as short as one sentence and only gives an overview of your expertise.

On the other hand, the second section is in bullet form and lists your exact proficiencies for the job. You don't have to list everything you do—only pick the five most important things that impact your application.

5. List Your Experience

Create a new slide to outline your professional experience. Instead of adding a new blank slide, duplicate the last slide you made to save time. To do so, right-click the last slide you made in the slide preview pane, then choose Duplicate Slide .

After making the new slide, delete the main text you created in the last slide. Also, don't forget to update the highlighted section on your table of contents.

List your chronological professional history in this section. However, you don't have to write down everything—only include your recent and relevant experience. If you don't have professional experience yet, distill your life experiences, like significant school projects, internships, and informal employment, and list them as your relevant experience.

6. Insert Your Best Work Samples

After you list your experience:

  • Create the Portfolio slide.
  • Again, use the Duplicate Slide technique to save time.
  • Don't forget to update the highlighted section and remove the main text of the previous slide.

The Portfolio Page(s) is where you insert samples of your work. If you're a visual artist, it's as simple as adding images of your work. But if you're a professional, use screenshots of your output or achievements. Just ensure you didn't sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), and you're allowed to share what you add here.

Don't be afraid to use multiple slides to showcase your best, but limit it to five slides, at most. If your content doesn't fit in one screenshot, don't be afraid to include a clickable link.

7. Describe Your Education and Training

For this section, write down your education and other relevant training and certificates you've earned. You should always include your highest attainment in this section. If you've completed a bachelor's degree, include that in your list, plus any graduate and post-graduate degrees you've earned.

For training and certificates, you should only include them if they're relevant and from a reputable institution.

8. Provide Your Contact Information

Your career portfolio should always contain information on how you can be reached. After all, if the person reading your document likes what they see but can't get in touch with you, its purpose is defeated.

It's essential to add your email, telephone number, and professional social media accounts there. If you have one, don't forget to add your website. Lastly, you can also add your personal social media pages here, but only if you prefer.

Adding Your Initial Details on the Contact Slide

To make your portfolio look more professional, you can use icons instead of words to represent your details. Once you've deleted the previous text from the duplicated slide, click on " Click to add text " text box and add the details you need.

Finding the Right Icon in PowerPoint

After adding your details, go to Insert > Icons to add the pertinent icons. A new window will appear where you can search for the icons you need. Select the icons you want and then press Insert to add them to your slide.

When you've completed your portfolio, go to File > Save . Type your file name in the given form, then click on the file type options dropdown menu and choose PDF (*.pdf) for faster sharing.

Imagine you are walking across your campus. As you pass the student center, you see a couple of people who have set up at a table outside, and they’re passing out information about the student honor society. Open windows in the music building share the sounds of someone practicing the piano in the art studio. Upon entering your class building, you are greeted by student-made posters illustrating various phases of the process of cell division. An open class door allows you to watch a young man in a lab coat and protective gear pour liquid nitrogen over items in a tray while the rest of his classmates look on with great interest. Your own instructor is setting up the computer screen at the front of your class when you walk in, loading up the Powerpoint that he plans to use for the day.

All of these are examples of presentations, and it’s very likely that you’ll be asked to participate in similar activities during your college career. Presenting, whether face-to-face or online, is a skill you will hone as a college student in preparation for your future career.

Presentation Types

Presentations can take many forms and potentially serve many purposes. When reading the definitions below, keep in mind that many presentations often combine several elements into a hybrid form. You may have to pick and choose what will work best for you depending on the instructor and the course. Let’s start with the different genres or types of presentations.

Informative

Some presentation assignments will ask you simply to deliver information about a topic. Often these presentations involve research, which you will shape and present to your instructor and classmates. Typically, informative presentations ask that you NOT share your opinion about the subject at hand (which can be more challenging than it seems). With an informative presentation, your goal is to educate your audience by presenting a summary of your research and “sticking to the facts.”

Unlike informative presentations, persuasive presentations ask that you not only form an opinion about your subject but also convince your audience to come around to your point of view. These presentations often involve research, too, and the findings of your research will be used to bolster the persuasive case you’re making.

Lesson Delivery

You may be asked to do a “Teaching Presentation,” which will require you to specialize in one topic of the course and give your fellow classmates instruction about it. In short, you become the teacher of a subject. Often your presentation will be the only time that this subject is covered in the class, so you will be responsible for making sure that you provide clear, detailed, and relevant information about it. You may also be asked to provide questions on the subject to be included in a quiz or test.

Demonstration

These action-based presentations typically model some behavior or subject matter that has been introduced previously in the class. Unlike the Lesson Delivery presentation, a demonstration adds a level of performance in which you show and tell the the audience what you know. You might perform the demonstration yourself, as a way of illustrating the concept or procedure, or you might provide classmates with instructions and guidance as they do it themselves.

Poster presentations should convey all the information on a subject necessary for a viewer to consider on her own. They often consist of short, punchy wording accompanied by strong visuals—graphs, charts, images, and/or illustrations. Posters frequently require research to prepare, and they allow for some creativity in design. Depending on the assignment, your poster may be part of a gallery of poster presentations with your classmates. Your poster has to communicate everything that is important without you being there to explain it to your audience.

Similar to poster presentations, online presentations are generally asynchronous— meaning they don’t require you to be present at the same time as your viewer. They often serve similar purposes as poster presentations, but due to the online format, they allow for more interactive possibilities, such as sharing a pertinent video or animated graph. Your online presentation must stand alone to teach your audience everything they need to know.

Solo and Group Presentations

You may be asked to present as an individual or as part of a group.

Individual presentations put all of the responsibility for preparation, research, and delivery on you. You rightfully take all the credit for the final product you produce.

Group presentations , in contrast, often involve more complicated tasks and therefore require more participants to make them. Your instructor may make suggestions about how the work should be divided, or the group may delegate tasks internally. Grades may be assigned equally to everyone in the group, though many instructors assign individual grades based on some participation-level factor to inspire each member to pull his or her own weight.

Presentation assignments are often open to creative interpretation, which gives you a lot of room to explore new techniques and add a personal touch to the task.

Now that you’ve learned a bit about the various types of presentations, it’s helpful to turn to another important part of presenting: the audience. Like reading and writing, presenting is a form of communication. Whether you’re presenting information, giving a demonstration, creating a poster, or trying to change people’s minds, your goal is to get your message across to your audience. For that reason, it’s important to remember that they may not interpret the information you are presenting exactly as you have. It’s your job as a presenter to explain your ideas using specific details, succinct and clear wording (avoid jargon), vivid descriptions, and meaningful images. As you organize your presentation, keeping this imaginary audience in mind can help you gauge how much background information and context to provide.

Choosing Media and Format for Visual Aids

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “Death by PowerPoint” to explain that all-too-familiar feeling of being slowly bored to death by a thoughtless presenter who’s droning on and on about boring slide after boring slide. If you’d like to know what the experience is about, and you have time for a laugh, watch the following video, starring stand-up comedian Don McMillan. McMillan pokes fun at bad presentations, but he has some very sound advice about what not to do .

You may consider using PowerPoint for your presentation, and that’s perfectly fine. PowerPoint can be a very effective tool with the right organization, layout, and design. Below is a list of five common pitfalls that you can and should avoid, and doing so will go a long way toward making your PowerPoint presentation successful:

  • Choosing a font that is too small . The person in the very back of the room should be able to see the same thing as the person in the front of the room.
  • Putting too many words on a slide . Remember it’s called PowerPoint, not PowerParagraph! Keep your bullet points clear and succinct.
  • Having spelling errors . Have somebody proofread your slides. Any typos will detract from your presentation.
  • Choosing distracting colors that make it hard to read the information . PowerPoint gives you a lot of color choices in their design templates. The ideas in your brilliant presentation will be lost if your audience is struggling to read the content.
  • Selecting images or visuals that do not clearly align with the content . For instance, a cute photo of your cat may look lovely up on the screen, but if it doesn’t connect to your topic, it’s just fluff that detracts from your message. Every slide counts, so make sure the visuals support your message.

Practicing for the Presentation

Once you’ve put together your presentation and have an idea of the audience that will hear and see it, it’s time to deal with the “nerves” that can accompany the performance part of the presentation. let’s consider some strategies for reducing anxiety about the presentation. Let’s turn to a final list of pointers for the “performance” part of the presentation, when you actually present your plan to an audience. You’ve worked hard as the owner of this presentation, so have confidence in your work. It’s tough to remember this when you’re nervous, but you’re the person who knows the most about your presentations. The following activity can help you get there.

Activity: Make A Presentation Plan

  • Practice techniques to reduce anxiety prior to and during presentation delivery

Directions:

  • As you plan for your presentation, it’s helpful to reflect on the challenges you may face when you present to your audience. Jot down a quick list of strengths and weaknesses. Be honest!
  • Now that you have an honest reflection of those strengths and weakness, it’s time to practice. Ask a friend or family member to watch you present. Request that they be honest with you and give constructive criticism about the strengths and weaknesses of your presentation. Have them jot down quick notes.
  • After the practice presentation, compare notes with the friend or family member. Compare and contrast how you felt about the quality of your presentation with the feedback you received. Use this information to help improve your presentation delivery.

What if you don’t have anyone available to practice your presentation? Record yourself using your phone or your laptop. It can be very difficult to listen to yourself, but it’s always enlightening to watch and/or listen to yourself present.

Practicing your presentation will help you build confidence and reduce anxiety prior to and during your presentation. Remember the sage advice of Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” Good luck!

Career Exploration Ideas: How to Get Students Excited About Career Planning

Choosing your life’s work doesn’t happen overnight. For many people, it takes years of trial and error that may include post-secondary education and a series of jobs that aren’t the right fit.  What if we could help the next generation avoid that painful process? Imagine a world where students graduated from high school with confidence in their strengths, a strong sense of purpose, and a clear pathway to a meaningful career that’s especially suited to them?  Educators and counselors have already begun to sow the seeds of future fulfilment in their students by embedding career exploration into their lessons for children as young as 3 rd grade. It’s a concept that can be woven into just about any subject and is highly compatible with social-emotional curriculum activities.  Let’s look at some ways you can introduce career exploration into your classroom or virtual classroom—at any grade level.

What Is Career Exploration?

Meaningful career exploration for students is two-pronged. It involves:

  • Reflecting on an individual’s own interests, strengths, skills, values, and preferences. Students are encouraged to engage in self-discovery with exercises that answer questions like: 
  • Which subjects do I most enjoy and excel in? 
  • What kind of things do I like to do outside of school?
  • What kind of activities do I do that make time feel like it’s flying by? (This is a good indication of flow , an important component of happiness and satisfaction.)
  • Attributes of careers, i.e. core tasks involved, average salary, working conditions, etc.
  • What kind of qualifications one might need to achieve each job, i.e. post-secondary study, experience, etc.
  • How some careers connect to others, i.e. an engineer could also get a job as a project manager, salesperson, technician, etc.

Why Is Career Exploration Important for Students?

Every good explorer starts a journey with a map. Conditions may cause them to alter their plans and they may learn new information that leads them to change directions, but having a guiding force is a helpful way to create and retain a strong sense of purpose throughout every adventure. When we make career exploration part of the framework for every student’s education, they learn to think beyond the day’s math test or history lesson—and connect the dots between what they are learning and how they might apply it in the future. This often leads to improved engagement, higher achievement levels, reduced absenteeism, and increased graduation rates. When students have a good understanding of the working world, they can imagine how they might fit into it someday. They can prepare for the kind of career they want by setting goals, choosing courses, and focusing on extracurricular activities that support their future. Best of all, students who participate in career exploration activities often develop a stronger sense of self-esteem and self-knowledge. They naturally begin to build social-emotional learning skills such as organization, communication, problem-solving, and even financial literacy because they’re focused on achieving a goal. 

What Are Some Career Exploration Tools?

[xo-module id=”13083″] Gone are the days when educators and counselors have to rely on outdated worksheets that have been circulating since the 1980s. Today’s career exploration tools include sophisticated EdTech programs and creative ideas to engage learners of all ages.

  • Bizworld.org : Career Exploration Lesson Plan for Grades 3-5 and 6-8.

Career Exploration Activities for Elementary Students

The Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati has students as young as third grade participating in career exploration using college and career readiness software Xello. They start by playing ‘Career Town’, a game that underlines the variety of work and workers in a community, and the importance of every worker in a community.  School Counselor Kate McKenzie also has students in Grades 3-5 log their interests and achievements in Xello. “I want to get them thinking about, ‘What am I good at?’, ‘What do I like to do?’ It lends itself beautifully to goal setting and expanding their hobbies. They can start expanding their experiences which will help them craft a better story of themselves as they grow up,” she said. Other tried-and-true career exploration activities for primary students include:

  • Bringing in parents and community members to share what it’s like to do their jobs. Take special care to ensure diversity and an equitable gender spread so every student can see themselves in at least one career.
  • Asking students to reflect on what they enjoy and what they’re good at and then connecting that to a career. Many educators assign a ‘poster project’ in which students create colorful posters to depict the career.
  • On field trips, taking special note of the careers at the museum, zoo, art gallery, or theater presentation. Ask hosts to share a little about their job as part of their presentations.

Career Exploration Activities for Middle School Students

Grades 6-8 are often considered the prime beneficiaries for career exploration activities. They are at an age when they are especially receptive to “cool” jobs and they understand the connection between careers, salaries, and the kind of lifestyle they want.  This is also a time when they will need to choose their high school courses, some of which are specialized pathways to a particular area of post-secondary study. This is where self-knowledge is especially important so they can make informed decisions that will affect their future. Career exploration activities for this group include:

  • What a typical day is like
  • Salary range
  • Education requirements
  • How/why they chose that career
  • I want to work inside / outside all day.
  • I want to work by myself / I want to work with other people as much as possible. 
  • I want to use technology / work with my hands and/or people. 

Then have them pick three careers based on what they’ve chosen. Tools like Xello will help them narrow it down.

  • Once they have highlighted three possible careers, have them chart the path to get there. What type of courses should they take in high school? Are there extracurricular activities that would give them experience? What kind of post-secondary education would lead them to that career?

Career Exploration Activities for High School Students

By this point, students should have some idea of their strengths, challenges, and passions. The goal is to avoid high school seniors who have absolutely no idea what their future holds. This is a time to double down on career exploration activities in as many classes as possible.  Activities include:

  • Assigning take-home assignments focused on helping students define career options that are a good fit for them.
  • Asking students to consider and present non-degree post-secondary pathways, i.e. apprenticeship programs.
  • Having students uncover five “hidden” jobs each, i.e. not teacher, engineer, baker or mechanic. Ask them to find roles like HR specialist, content marketing strategist, forensic science technician, or computer network architect and present them to the class. 

School districts everywhere are increasingly recognizing the importance of career exploration, particularly when programs and activities satisfy mandates like ESSA .  More importantly, educators understand that the ripple effects of students who are engaged, have self-knowledge, and understand how they might one day fit into their communities are much more likely to choose the right post-secondary pathway for them.  A generation of purposeful adults who set and achieve the right career goals for them? When career exploration is integrated into education, it’s not only possible; it’s probable.

Career Presentation Assignment

The research assignment aims to enlarge a reader’s view of a certain topic by providing accurate and relevant information. For this presentation, you are required to choose a career of interest to explore. Once you have determined a career, you may focus on education, salary, work environment, and skills needed for the job. You are not limited to the four areas previously mentioned. Additionally, make sure that the topic can be supported in a 5-minute presentation. In this presentation, you are required to use a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) secondary sources, and they must be credible sources (for each missing secondary source, you will receive a 10-point deduction). I encourage you to use specific research sites like the GSU library’s electronic database. I will take off several points if the MLA format and citations are incorrect. Remember that this is an academic research assignment, so you are required to use formal language (i.e., third-person perspective, no slang, no offensive language, no contractions). *If you plagiarize someone else’s work (professional or student), you will receive a zero for this assignment and possibly fail the course. Students are also guilty of plagiarism if they submit their own previously graded work. For this assignment, you will need a speech outline for me. The outline is due the day of your presentation. Please print the outline and bring it to class. Also, you must include images/clipart in your presentation. Additionally, you may use PowerPoint, Prezi, or Google Slides for your presentation. Students must include at least ten slides (the first slide should be your title page with your name and career, the middle slides should include your points w/in-text citations, and the final slide should include your Works Cited). This presentation will count separately from your annotated bibliography. The presentation is 10 percent of your research grade.
